Shot fired in robbery attempt
Parents pay for student’s school prank BY KARL YU THE NEWS BULLETIN
A B.C. supreme court judge has ordered a teenager and his parents to pay more than $48,000 in damages for a prank he played at Wellington Secondary School in 2012. According to Judge Shelley Fitzpatrick’s ruling, Carson Dean, who was 14 at the time of the incident, attached a friend’s padlock to a sprinkler head on Jan. 17, 2012, despite knowing sprinkler heads would discharge water if activated. There was significant water damage, as other sprinklers also started up. The Nanaimo school district and the student’s parents, Cheryl and Kevin Dean, agreed damages amounted to about $48,630. As per a section in the B.C. School Act dealing with liability for damage to property, the school district claimed the student was negligent for damage caused by intentional interference of the sprinkler head. It sought recovery of damages. The Deans argued the school act doesn’t impose liability unless there was intent to cause damage, which they say wasn’t Carson’s intention. Ultimately, Fitzpatrick said the incident, “... was clearly the result of a young boy misbehaving and thinking that the only grief to come of it would be to [the friend] and perhaps the janitor in removing the padlock. Obviously, more dire consequences followed.” See ‘LAWSUIT’ /5

SUSPECTS MAKE off with wine but no cash from liquor store at Terminal Park mall. BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN
Three men armed with a shotgun and pepper spray attempted to rob the B.C. Liquor Store in Terminal Park Mall on the weekend. The suspects entered the store shortly before 10:30 p.m. Saturday and one of the suspects fired a round from a shotgun into the store’s ceiling. As they were leaving, one of the suspects discharged two bursts of bear spray at one of the store’s female employees. The suspects fled without any cash, but possibly got away with several bottles of wine. “It appears that the cash drawer they took from the till was empty,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “They didn’t realize that, of course. They may have taken one or two bottles of wine.” A police service dog team tracked the suspects’ trail to Poplar Street where the track ended. No customers were in the store and no one was injured, but employees were shaken up. The employee who was pepper sprayed did not need medical help. All suspects had their faces covered with bandanas, two of them wore black hoodies and one wore a red hoodie under a black nylon jacket. O’Brien said police do not believe Saturday’s robbery is related to an armed robbery of the Stock Exchangers pawn store on Jan. 2. Anyone with information can call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www. nanaimocrimestoppers.com.

Construction upswing signals ‘really good year’ for Nanaimo

SEctor bouNcES back after building permits hit 12-year low in 2013. By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN

A house at 1950 Estevan rd. is ripped apart by an excavator and tossed in a dumpster Friday. the house was placed on the city’s list of derelict buildings scheduled for demolition after it partially collapsed in March.
Save-On-Foods closing Terminal Park store Overwaitea Food Group will shutter its Terminal Park grocery store in February after more than three decades in the neighbourhood. Overwaitea Food Group announced plans to close Terminal Park Save-onFoods at 6 p.m. on Feb. 5 as it turns its attention to its new Brooks Landing store. The Terminal Park supermarket – formerly Overwaitea Foods – has been in the area since 1957 and in its current location since 1980. Sixty-eight employees are now in talks with the company about their options, including the potential to stay on with the company in other locations, according to spokeswoman Julie Dickson Olmstead, who says staff were informed of the closure last Monday. The move to shutter the grocery comes on the heels of last year’s
acquisition of three Thrifty Food stores from Sobeys, including the Brooks Landing site just two kilometers away. Olmstead said the four stores in Nanaimo, two in close proximity to one another, isn’t practical and doesn’t work for the business. “So we are moving the business from the Terminal Park location over to the newest store, which is Brooks Landing,” she said. “We’ve just opened a brand new pharmacy there and completed a number of significant upgrades and we are looking forward to moving. Hopefully the customers will move with us.” Olmstead said Overwaitea doesn’t have any long-term strategy information it can share at this time around what will happen at the site, but it will maintain ownership over the building in Terminal Park shopping centre.
Residential construction is making a comeback in Nanaimo, after permits hit a 12-year low in 2013. Building permits and new construction bounced back in 2014, with residential projects leading the way, housing statistics show. The City of Nanaimo saw a 75-per cent uptick in residential construction in the last year, with $83.2 million in planned investment compared to $50.5 million in 2013. Permits for multi-family construction also experienced a dramatic upswing, with applications to create 336 units up from 77 the year previous. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation shows that actual residential housing starts were on the rise in 2014, with builds three times what they were last year in the month of December alone. In total, there were 665 new residential projects, compared to 415 in 2013, with multi-family construction rising 65 per cent and single-detached homes by 55 per cent. Housing experts say lower vacancy rates and the supply of housing are behind the increase. The City of Nanaimo also saw a jump in permit applications in the first two weeks of December, including 102 for single-family homes, as people tried to beat out new building code regulations that came into effect Dec. 18, said Tom Weinreich, the
city’s manager of building inspections. The code changed efficiency requirements for things like hot water tanks, sky lights and windows. Overall 2014 was a “really good year for construction in Nanaimo,” said Weinreich. And momentum isn’t expected to go away, with the CMHC and B.C. Real Estate Association both projecting higher building activity during the next 12 months. Cameron Muir, chief economist with the B.C. Real Estate Association, said there was significant construction activity in the lead up to 2013, which created a spike in complete but unoccupied units, and drove builders to cut back on production. Last year they got back into the market, starting a ‘catch up’ of home building activity that’s expected to continue. “We’re likely to see an eight- to 10-per cent increase [in 2015],” Muir said. “We’ve seen an increase in both consumer demand in the overall market in Nanaimo and Vancouver Island and that’s also resulting from an increase in terms of population growth as well. “Both those things taken in tandem, we see a continued, fairly robust activity on the housing start side for Nanaimo.” The B.C Real Estate Association also anticipates growth in multi-family housing starts, which it believes will increase 15 per cent in 2015. Affordability is a “major constraint” in B.C. housing markets and multi-family is more affordable for first-time buyers as well as retirees who are looking for a more care-free housing type, Muir said. The CMHC believes multi-family will see higher activity at 19 per cent, contributing to a total 650 overall housing starts in the next year. news@nanaimobulletin.com

VIU students’ union opposes cuts
I
uNivErSitiES ablE to charge for adult basic education. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN
The Vancouver Island University students’ union is opposed to changes the B.C. government has made to adult basic education. The provincial government began allowing post-secondary institutions to charge tuition for adult upgrade courses on Jan. 1. Patrick Barbosa, students’ union spokesman, said adult basic education provides a gateway for adults to attend post-secondary education either in trades or academic programs.
“At the end of the day, this was a small cost for the province. This provided easy access to upgrading so people could go to university or college and we believe that this is the wrong direction,” said Barbosa. Jean Maltesen, Vancouver Island University’s dean of academic and career preparation, said the university will continue to offer adult basic education programs for free at all campuses for the current semester, “but it is not known whether tuition will be charged in the future.” The Ministry of Advanced Education told the News Bulletin charging tuition will keep the programs sustainable. Throughout B.C., institutions say they can’t meet student demand and sustain
adult upgrading, including English as a second language, without being able to charge tuition, the ministry said. In anticipation, it said it increased the budget for the adult upgrading grant by 33 per cent. Students who are 10 per cent above the income threshold are now eligible for a grant to cover half their tuition, the ministry said. WEIGHT LOSS CENTRE The ministry also announced it will cease to provide funding for school districts for tuition-free upgrade courses to adults that already have a high school diploma beginning May 1. Courses for those working toward a high school diploma will continue to be tuitionfree, however.

HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. Eight years ago Hap Armstrong noticed little changes in his wife, but nothing he could put his finger on as an obvious symptom of dementia. She would forget where things were, or the names of people she knew well, but it would come and go. When even she started to notice her memory getting worse, though, it was time to go to a specialist. A memory test showed mild decline, just one point below normal. The next year, the score slipped seven per cent. She forgot how to cook and do the laundry. The card games she’d played for years with her husband, she could no longer remember, although she’d try really hard, Armstrong said. “You go through a whole bunch of emotions,” he said. “My wife [Donna] and I have been married 54 years now and I think the world about her and always did. You see all these things happening ...
she would get angry at me and she’d hit me with her purse and I mean, listen, that wasn’t my wife. “Anybody who knew my wife, she was a happy-golucky person.” Donna is one of 747,000 Canadians diagnosed with a form of dementia. Seventytwo per cent of people with Alzheimer’s are women – one reason the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is spreading the word this month about the brain disease and the need for women to be prepared for the possibility. “We’ve known this for a while, but I think it’s really important to inform women in their 40s and older about the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease and that it’s important to get an early diagnosis if this is what’s happening,” said Jane Hope, the Alzheimer Society’s support and education coordinator for central and North Island. Women live longer than men and age is one of the largest risk factors for dementia and Alzheimer’s, with one in 11 people over the age of 65 diagnosed with a form of the disease and one in three over 85, according to Hope, who says warning signs include forgetting what

keys are for or how to make meals. “We don’t realize this disease starts quite early with those warning signs, so people can live quite a good life through the early stages,” she said. “That’s why we really promote an early diagnosis, so people can prepare.” On Jan. 22, the Alzheimer Society hosts an information session, Getting to Know Dementia, for those with early stages of the disease and their caregivers. The annual Walk for Memories happens Jan. 25, 11 a.m., at the Nanaimo Yacht Club. For more information, please call Hope at 250-7344170.

Domestic dispute triggers emergency response team The Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team was called out to a home on Salmon Road following a violent domestic dispute Sunday. Police were called out shortly before 11 a.m. when a 34-year-old woman fled a home where she had been assaulted during an argument
that turned violent. “The female was slightly injured and left the home,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “The male was inside and refused to leave. Due to the possibility of firearms inside the ERT was called out.” Police negotiated with the
30-year-old suspect for about two hours before he agreed to come out of the house and was taken into custody. Police are recommending charges related to the assault against the suspect. No firearms-related charges are pending from the incident. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

War is waged against press In Western countries, freedom of the press is taken for granted. But an attack last week that left 10 journalists and two police officers dead in the offices of a Parisian satirical magazine highlights just how shaky a concept it is. We’re not suggesting that such an attack is likely to occur at a media outlet on Vancouver Island. For one thing, it seems the Paris attack was the work of terrorists attacking the paper in retaliation for its caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, which have frequently drawn condemnation from Muslims. Attacks on the media come from all levels – it seems there is always someone who wants to prevent the media from speaking out. One of the most important roles of the media in a free society is that of a watchdog, to keep an eye on the doings of those in positions of power or, as the saying goes, comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. In general, that means that if you are doing your job well as a journalist, someone is always going to be ticked off with you. What we are talking about, though, goes farther than just the press speaking out. Taking away or limiting freedom of the media is just one step away from taking away freedom of speech, which, with variations, is considered a fundamental liberty throughout Western democracies. The attack on Charlie Hebdo is more than an attack on a single media outlet. It is an attack on the barrier – paper-thin, inconsistent and wavering though it might be – that separates our societies from becoming dictatorships. One line from Gérard Biard, the editor-in-chief at Charlie Hebdo, who was away from the office when the attack occurred, sums up our feeling. “I don’t understand how people can attack a newspaper with heavy weapons. A newspaper is not a weapon of war.” At its best, a newspaper is a weapon of freedom. And that scares some people more than any bullet.

Keep food costs under control
Superintendent’s severance pay is public interest
To the Editor,
I wonder how many people like myself see the continuous increase in consumer products, especially groceries, and feel we are being nickled and dimed to the benefit of a lot of windfall profits to the retailer. For years I have been told by my friendly grocer that it is due to the rising cost in transportation and that many of our consumer products come from the U.S. I find it hard to believe that there is not an increase in profit going into someone’s pocket with the huge decrease in gas prices. We are continually asked to support our local merchants, which most would agree is a good idea, but in pricing some consumer products such as meat and fruit and vegetables as compared to the larger retailer the markup can be up to 30 per cent. Is it because employees in the local store are getting much higher wages and benefits than

Re: Weekend parking free downtown, Dec. 22. I read with amusement your story of the downtown business group, which gets over half a million dollars a year to operate courtesy taxpayers. The Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association has delivered a smokeand-mirrors public relations stunt to appear it is doing something about parking woes. If the BIA really wants to improve shopping in the business district, how about giving all its tax funding back to the city so free parking could then be subsidized 24/7.

dESigNEd to engage students at all education levels within same classroom. By Karl yu

James Sijpheer, principal of Nanaimo Christian School, said his school is redesigning the curriculum for high school students, featuring new teaching methods and bistro-style seating, called flex-ed.
Your Regional Hospital Lottery
With the aim of better engaging students, Nanaimo Christian School’s secondary school instructors will be taking a different approach when teaching the curriculum this fall. The independent school in Nanaimo is looking to fully implement its flexed program come September and according to James Sijpheer, school principal, the traditional method of teaching and regurgitating isn’t connecting with contemporary students. Students learn best when more parts of the brain are engaged and the school is looking to institute a system that isn’t a one-size-
fits-all model, but is personalized and flexible to the needs of individual students, Sijpheer said. “In our model, it’s a combination of some traditional teaching structures, some direct instruction, so the value and the importance of a teacher is still there, but it provides a lot more choice for students in customizing their learning plan and learning program,” said Sijpheer. He pointed to a math class as an example. If a teacher instructs for 15 minutes and then gives an assignment, a third of the students may finish the work, a third won’t finish and take it home for completion, while a third could “goof around and be unproductive.” “In the flex model
that we’re looking at doing is you’d still have that direct instruction piece but now the student who needs 15 minutes, is not confined to a 70-minute math class, with 40 minutes to waste and kill at the end of the period. Instead, they then get to choose where their work and time is going to be focused,” said Sijpheer. Students will have a lot more choice and say in what their daily schedule looks like and it will allow for the creation of independent studies courses. Classrooms will be arranged differently as well, following a pattern currently used in the school’s online/distance education centre, which Sijpheer likens to Starbucks, with bistro-style seating and high-counter tables. Sijpheer said it has become the classroom of choice for 90 per cent of the high

Musician concentrates on career
I
GRAMMY WINNER performing at the Port Theatre. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
HOW TO PLAY:
www.nanaimobulletin.com
YOU COULD WIN $50.00 CASH
For Andrew York, a career in music was something he was willing to gamble on. “I was quite aware that if I wanted to make money I should go into sciences, another deep interest of mine, but to me music was such a muse,” York told the News Bulletin. “It was so beautiful and interesting so I just thought I am going to take my chances.” Now more than three decades later, with numerous tours and a Grammy Award under his belt, York’s gamble paid off in more ways than he could have ever imagined. “My goal was never to garner awards or recognition,” he said. “That luckily can come with it if you’re doing well, but that wasn’t my goal. My goal was to experience music.” On Saturday (Jan. 17), York will be performing with Brian Gore, Diego Figueirido and Maneli Jamal at the Port Theatre as part of the venue’s International Guitar Night. The event will see the four artists perform a short solo set followed by duos and a quartet. “We will do some duos together and then we usually end off with one quartet just to find something to do, which is a really creative process because this is essentially people that don’t know each other,” York said. York was born into a musical family in Georgia and as a small child, he quickly became interested in music. “I would play records endlessly and listen to them intently,” York said. “I heard them then as I do now. I was able to hear the music. That’s probably why I became a composer.”
Celebrating 30 Years!
Following high school, York attended James Madison University and earned his Masters in Music at the University of Southern California. “I was grateful. USC is one of those tiers of school that is very expensive. I needed scholarships to be able to go because who wants to pay $40,000 a year in 1983?” York said. He originally started out as a classical player but switched into jazz shortly after arriving in California.

Grammy winner Andrew York performs at the Port Theatre Saturday.
“I came out to actually to be a jazz studio player,” he said. “I was actually a classical player since I was very young … but I got into jazz and was very serious about it.” In 1990, York joined the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and won a Grammy Award with them in 2005. “It’s hard believe,” York said about winning a Grammy. “When I was younger I knew I was going to be a musician and everybody is aware of the Grammys, but I thought ‘well that is something that will never happen.’” After spending 16 years as a member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and balancing a solo career, York decided to leave the group and focus on himself.
In 2012, York released his most recent solo record, Yamour, and he is currently working on a new album. “To write music is a very difficult, frustrating and fascinating adventure,” he said. “I have remained drawn to that throughout my life.” The advent of file sharing, social media and the Internet has left many musicians wondering what will happen, including York. “The reality is that, yes, it makes it harder. We’re all trying to figure out how to adjust. I don’t have an answer. I am just trying not to be crotchety about it.” York believes that the attention span among modern music listeners is dropping. “To listen to complex and good music requires more than a Twitter link ... and that’s the sad part for me,” he said. “It’s sort of a dying art, being able to actually concentrate.” York points out that generations ago people would listen to symphony orchestras for hours on end, but now people listen to music with distractions all around them. “Nobody sits down and listens to an hour of music and really listens, and are not doing anything,” he said. “That’s a lost art and that is too bad because there is a lot of beauty and depth and nourishment for the spirit and mind when you can do that.” Despite the drop in attention span, York believes there is a place for classical and jazz musicians such as himself. “I think that there are a lot of people in the world that hunger for this complexity and meaning that a deeper level of music can offer,” he said. “It has its place and it cannot be supplanted by pop stars.” York performs at the Port Theatre on Saturday (Jan. 17). Clippers keep rolling at trade deadline I
“
JR. A team adds to lineup, wins fifth straight.
Everybody’s excited and happy with the group we’ve got.
BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
On trade deadline weekend, the Nanaimo Clippers kept rolling along. The Clips bolstered their lineup, won both their games and transitioned toward the next stage of the B.C. Hockey League season. Nanaimo defeated the Cowichan Valley Capitals 5-2 on Friday in Duncan, then beat the Coquitlam Express by the same 5-2 score the following night at Frank Crane Arena. “I don’t know if it was our best game, but we ended up with the result we were looking for,” said Cole Maier, Clippers forward, on Saturday night. The Clips were wary against the Express, as Coquitlam had come back late to win a meeting between the two teams three months ago on the mainland. This time, Nanaimo built a 3-0 lead early in the third, saw the visitors close the gap to 3-2, but didn’t get spooked. “We’ve been staying pretty focused as a group,” said Mike Vandekamp, the team’s coach. Maier’s goal from the side of the net with four minutes left secured the win for the Clippers. “We came through at the end there in the third … after a sort of shaky start,” Maier said. “We’re certainly a much better team than the last time we played them. “I’ve never brought my phone on a bench before and texted while the game was on,” he said. “We had some stuff going on and being the general manager and the coach at the same time, you’re trying to deal with stuff.” The Clippers added forward Brendan Shane from the U.S. Hockey

The Clippers like the potential of their new additions and since there was no major shakeup, they feel like they’re only continuing to build on their team chemistry. “The boys are definitely happy with what we’ve got…” Maier said. “I think ever ybody’s excited and happy with the group we’ve got now.” GAME ON … The Clippers are on the road this coming weekend, visiting the Trail Smoke Eaters on Friday, the Salmon Arm Silverbacks the next day and then the Merritt Centennials the day after that. Buccaneers beat league’s best team BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
The Nanaimo Buccaneers needed a win and they got one against the league’s best team. The Bucs beat the Campbell River Storm by a 5-3 score on Thursday night at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. It was the first victory of the season against the Storm, and it snapped a fivegame winless streak. “We needed that,” said Derek Bachynski, coach of the Buccaneers. “We were in a little bit of a funk the last few games, but I think with that victory we’re back on track.” The Storm scored early in the third period to go up 3-2, but the Bucs battled back. Quinlan Moore scored the gametying goal on the power play with nine minutes left, then Trent Bell scored a pair to complete a hat trick. “We lost some games that we should have won last week, so we had a little bit of fire in the belly,” said Bell. “We came out strong. I think we played our best complete 60 minutes of the season.” The coach praised the goaltending – Greg Maggio made 38 saves and was chosen the game’s first star – and said his team played playoffstyle hockey.

Wellington sweeps Superball I BOYS DEFEAT Dover, girls beat Carihi at annual tournament.
Wellington’s teams are on top in local hoops. We l l i n g t o n S e c o n d a r y School’s senior boys’ and senior girls’ basketball squads swept their Superball tournament on the weekend. Welly’s boys beat the Dover Bay Dolphins 66-55 in Saturday’s final after the Wildcats girls got past the Carihi Tyees 47-42. “The kids played great,” said Luke Letham, coach of the Wildcats boys. “It was an entertaining game; the difference in the end was our defence…” Anton Kamke led Wellington with 30 points and also had a standout defensive game. Hayden Jeffrey added 12 points for the ’Cats. Jordan Gladstone scored 21 points for Dover. The third-place game saw the Barsby Blazers handle the D.W. Poppy Redhawks 49-33. Chris DeGoutiere led Barsby with 19 points and North Rainey scored 14. In the girls’ final, Olivia Mjaaland led the way with 12 points. The Nanaimo District Islanders took third in the girls’ draw, doubling up Dover Bay 74-37. Natasha Jensen led NDSS with 28 points and Tkia King scored 22. For the Dolphins, Danielle Frinton was top scorer with 17 points.
Junior B team starts playing tougher From /27
“When we’re at our best, we’re relentless and we’re skating and we’re doing all the little things correctly…” the coach said. “I told the boys, we’ve got to start finishing our hits; we’ve got to start playing meaner and we’ve got to start playing a little bit tougher.” Jordan Levesque had Nanaimo’s other goal on Thursday, plus three assists, and Carter Turnbull dished four assists. Will McNamara had a goal and two assists for the Storm.

boot camp all about improving fitness

ClAss hAs little in common with army workout of same name. by Karl yu The News BulleTiN
Rookie boot camp at Oliver Woods Community Centre can be an option for people considering fitness as part of their New Year’s resolution. The program incorporates different exercises from session to session and while participants will get a good sweat and workout, instructor Angel Jones said it bears little resemblance to the army program of the same name. “Boot camp tends to be a scary [term],” said Jones. “It’s not a militarybased boot camp ... I’m not a drill sergeant. It’s not like tire flipping and crazy boot camp or traditional boot camp that you would think about. It’s a full-body fitness class.” ROOKIE BOOT CAMP Jones said runs Monday to exercises are taiFriday, 9:30 a.m., lored to match and Mondays and a participant’s wednesdays at 5 level. Typically, the first five to 10 minutes of the session are devoted to warm-up, which can consist of walking laps and warming up the joints, and then a sec-

There could be a tendency for the beginners to feel a little intimidated by people at the intermediate level, but Jones said everyone can draw inspiration from one another. “In my opinion, having a group fitness
class, with the different levels of physical activity and fitness levels, it’s just motivating to see where you could go, to see maybe where you’ve come from and just everybody is always encouraging within the classes,” said Jones. “Nobody is judging you on your ability.” Kathy Gonzales, Oliver Woods’ program coordinator, said boot camp classes run Monday to Friday, with sessions from 9:30-10:30 a.m. There are
also evening sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 to 5:50 p.m. For more information, including registration, go to the parks, recreation and environment section of the City of Nanaimo’s website, www.nanaimo.ca, or call 250-756-5200. “Come on out and give it a try,” said Jones. “Don’t be afraid.
