Resource society hopes community will help make up shortfall

Homelessness funding takes a hit Nick Greenizan Staff Reporter

Government-funding cuts have put Sources Community Resource Centre’s homelessness programs in jeopardy and left the non-profit organization scrambling to make up the difference. On Friday, Sources announced that Employment and Social Development Canada would cease funding Sources’ Newton-

based homeless-prevention services, which since 2005 have helped more than 11,000 Sources clients throughout the region stay in their homes. The program assists with housing subsidies, income support, landlord mediation, loans for rent and utility payments and more. “We don’t know what will happen now if we aren’t able to continue these services,”

said Sources CEO David Young. “We help, on average, about 1,000 people every year. Now, without our (help), will some of these people end up without a place to live? I don’t know.” Young said the cuts have come as a result of the federal government initiating a new funding approach. Under the new system, Sources submitted a proposal for continued funding, but was rejected, he explained.

The loss of funding amounts to $200,000 per year, Young said. For the next three months, Sources will fund its homelessprevention services out of the society’s reserve funds, but sustainable funding – both through Sources’ fundraising efforts and, potentially, other grants – will need to be found in order for the service to operate long-term. i see page 4

Paris attack hits home

While still in bed at 6:30 a.m. last Wednesday, Dave Hayer reached for his Blackberry and scrolled through the news items. He froze when he read about the killing of 12 people at a magazine in Paris, France. It caused a chilling rush of déja vu for the former Liberal MLA for Surrey-Tynehead. The news accounts described how three attackers wearing black and wielding Kalashnikov automatic rifles stormed the offices of the French magazine, Charlie Hebdo, and shot and killed 10 journalists and two police officers. After one suspect turned himself in on ThursDave Hayer day, two other recalls attack men involved were killed by police the next day after taking a woman hostage in a printing plant north of Paris. A fourth man – who is believed to be connected to the gunmen – killed a police officer on Thursday and took five people hostage in a grocery store in southeast Paris. He was also killed by police.

After he was shot and left paralyzed, Tara Singh Hayer continued to write editorials condemning the Air India bombings – until his assassination. As of Monday morning, officers continued to search for the hostage taker’s wife, 25-year-old Hayat Boumeddiene, who was believed to have travelled to Syria last week. The motive in the magazine shooting is believed to be the satirical publication’s unflattering caricatures of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

Terrible memories flooded back for Hayer, whose father, Tara Singh, was gunned down in Surrey for the pointed editorials he wrote in his newspaper – The IndoCanadian Times. The connection for Hayer was immediate. “Right away it brought memo-

Tips still sought after teenager died last month following Bakerview Park attack

Homicide unit given ‘good information’ Tracy Holmes Staff Reporter

One month after the murder of a 15-yearold South Surrey teen, investigators are again appealing for anyone who has information that might help solve the case to come forward. Sgt. Stephanie Ashton of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said Friday that officers have yet to make any arrests in connection with the death of Dario Bartoli. “They’re still working on the file, they’ve had some good information,” Ashton told Peace Arch News. “They have received some tips and they’re following up on those…

hoping more people will come forward.” Bartoli, a student at Earl Marriott Secondary, died in Peace Arch Hospital on Dec. 13, from injuries suffered in what police suggest may have been an “alcohol-fuelled” altercation earlier that morning in or near Bakerview Park, located at 18 Avenue and 154 Street. Police were alerted to a disturbance just before 3 a.m., after Bartoli and a 14-year-old boy fled to a home in the 15600-block of 18 Avenue. Transported to hospital with critical injuries, Bartoli died just after 10 a.m. Police say the second boy was not injured.

South Surrey motorists got a bit of a wet commute Friday morning, after crews working near 24 Avenue and 152 Street damaged a water main. The break caused an ankle-deep river of water to flow north along the east side of 152 Street and pool at the southeast corner of the intersection at 24 Avenue. According to the City of Surrey, damage to the 150-millimetre main occurred around 8:15 a.m., during excavation to perform a “water main tie in.”

Confrontation avoided as drivers record 2.7 million unpaid fares last year

Bus-fare evasion ‘takes its toll on bottom line’ Jeff Nagel Black Press

Bus drivers hit their ‘fare-not-paid’ button to record fare evaders more than 2.7 million times in 2013, or about 10 per cent more than in 2011, according to TransLink statistics. Many of the routes where bus-fare evasion is most prevalent run through poor neighbourhoods, and the top five all go through Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. “We are a community on wheels,” TransLink CEO Ian Jarvis said, adding the buses serve many people at risk who sometimes board without paying. “Yes, it’s unfair that certain people don’t pay. If they don’t pay, that’s theft. It’s unfair to the riders who do pay and the taxpayers who subsidize the system.” But he argued there are circumstances such as passenger safety that justify exceptions. “Think of a young teen trying to get home from Surrey Central to Langley or White

Rock, and they’re 50 cents short and it’s the last bus,” Jarvis said. “I would let that teenager on board.” The latest numbers were released by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation’s Jordan Bateman, who argues fare evasion is a chronic and growing problem and another reason for voters to reject a proposed 0.5 per cent sales tax for transit expansion. Asked if it’s reasonable to expect every passenger down to the poorest to pay each time they ride a bus, Bateman said there may be exceptions but people using the service should expect to pay for it. “It amuses me that they suggest this is somehow anti-poor when a sales tax without rebates is a regressive tax that hurts the poor more than anybody else,” Bateman said. The 2.76 million button presses equate to 1.1 per cent of the 249 million riders carried on buses each year, and would be worth $6.9 million in extra revenue if each of those free riders paid a $2.50 cash fare.

But Bateman contends real fare evasion levels are higher – worth more than $18 million a year when SkyTrain is included. “We know drivers don’t press the button every time,” Bateman said. “And we know drivers with a big backlog of people boarding will sometimes cover the farebox.” Jarvis said audits indicate fare evasion consistently runs at about 4.8 per cent systemwide. Transportation observer Stephen Rees said it’s impossible to ensure every passenger pays and most transit systems in the world aim to capture most, not all. He said the money lost to fare evasion is a tiny fraction of the $250 million in new annual revenue that’s critically needed to expand the system. “If everybody paid their fares we would still be in deep doo-doo,” Rees said. Nathan Woods, president of the bus drivers’ union, said drivers don’t confront passengers who don’t pay because driver

assaults can result. He said drivers have tried to be vigilant about pressing the fare-not-paid button to help transit security find fare cheats who may also be a threat to drivers. He said drivers encounter fare evaders everywhere. “It’s all walks of life, not just the poor neighbourhoods,” Woods said. “People can walk on with a $7 Starbucks coffee and walk by saying they can’t afford to pay.” Woods said many of the passengers recorded as unpaid may actually have a monthly pass or U-Pass but didn’t bother pulling it out to show the driver. “If they don’t show it, we’re going to tag the button,” Woods said. “We’re not going to say ‘Buddy do you want to come back and show me that’ because that can lead to confrontation.” He said drivers also push the button when drivers pay some but not enough cash, or if they pay too much.

Sources focuses on its fundraisers i from page 1 Without continued funding, the homeless-prevention program will lose its intake worker, client-resource support worker and manager, as those positions will no longer be fully funded. “Our goal is to retain the services as best we can, because we think it’s important to people in the community,” Young said. The next fundraiser on Sources’

calendar is the Feb. 21 Coldest Night of the Year walk. Last year’s event raised about $40,000, Young said, but this year organizers are aiming to double that amount. As well, the organization’s annual gala – set for April – has upped its fundraising target to $100,000 from $50,000. “We’re just going to roll up our sleeves and hope the community comes together and helps us,”

Young said. In 2014, 514 people were homeless in Surrey, White Rock, Langley and Delta. Surrey has the second-largest homeless population in Metro Vancouver, a Sources’ news release notes. For more information, call Soraya VanBuskirk, Sources’ advocacy program manager, at 604-547-0107, or email svanbuskirk@sourcesbc.ca

‘We can’t allow those people to win’ i from page 1 “He said, ‘Look, we don’t give up,’ and my mom said the same thing: ‘We want to keep the paper running,’” Hayer recalled. His mother kept that stance even when her husband was shot to death in the garage of his home in November 1998. “We will not stop, we cannot allow those people to win,” Hayer remembered his mother saying. The Indo-Canadian Times is still running today, and on its editorial front of Wednesday’s paper, it carries a story about the Charlie Hebdo shootings. In hindsight, Dave Hayer, who served as MLA from 2001 to 2013, said he wouldn’t have urged his father to act any differently. “Just like any media, you write the stories and some people don’t like what you’re writing,” he said. “You can’t allow them to stop freedom of the press just because they don’t like it.” He said there are other mechanisms, through the courts, to deal with disagreements with the press. If the media is silenced by acts of violence, everyone loses, he said. “We lose freedom of the press, we lose our democracy,” Dave Hayer said. “Many people have paid with their lives, keeping our democracy alive, and we all have to work together making sure we condemn terrorism.” Speaking in Delta on Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper told a crowd the shootings in Paris were another act in a “declaration of war” by international jihadists. “The trio of hooded

Will Planning & Estate Administration Richard A. Cleveland

men struck at some of our most cherished democratic principles, freedom of expression, freedom of the press,” Harper said. “They assaulted democracy everywhere. “The fact of the matter is this… the international jihadist movement has declared war. They have declared war on anybody who does not think and act exactly as they wish they would think and act... They have declared war on any country like ourselves that values freedom, openness and tolerance. “We may not like this and wish it would go away, but it is not going to go away. The reality is, we are going to have to confront it.” Tara Singh Hayer is one of two Canadian journalists to have been killed on Canadian soil. In 1995, Toronto TV sportscaster Brian Smith died after he was

shot in the head by a man waiting outside the station’s building in Ottawa. The shooter was found not criminally responsible due to mental illness. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 61 journalists were killed around the world in 2014 while on duty. In 1999, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression included a new award category in its annual Press Freedom Award program. The Tara Singh Hayer Memorial Award recognizes a Canadian journalist who has made an important contribution to reinforcing and promoting the principle of freedom of the press. The following year, Tara Singh Hayer was named one of the 50 World Press Freedom Heroes by the International Press Institute. – with files from Kolby Solinski

Two men found guilty of 2007 Surrey 6 murders

Appeal filed for convictions Sheila Reynolds Black Press

Two men found guilty last year in the mass murder of six people in a Surrey apartment in 2007 have filed appeals of their convictions. Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston were both convicted in B.C. Supreme Court in October of six counts of first-degree murder for the execution-style killings that took place at the Balmoral Apartment building in Whalley Oct. 19, 2007. Murdered were Corey Lal and his brother Michael, Eddie Narong, Ryan Bartolomeo, Edward Schellenberg and Christopher Mohan. The Crown’s theory was Haevischer and Johnston plotted to kill rival drug dealer Corey Lal

over a turf dispute, but that the others were killed to eliminate witnesses. While some of the other victims had links to the drug trade, Schellenberg, 55, was a gas fitter who happened to be repairing fireplaces in the building that day, while Mohan, 22, lived in a neighbouring apartment and was heading out to play basketball when he was pulled into the suite and shot to death. During the trial, the court heard the killers had the victims lie face down on the floor with hoods over their heads before shooting them. Johnston and Haevischer were sentenced in mid-December to a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years. They filed their

conviction appeals on Thursday in the B.C. Court of Appeal. Another accused, Michael Le, was initially on trial with the pair before making a surprise guilty plea in December 2013 to conspiracy to murder Corey Lal and then testifying for the Crown against the others. Another man, who can only be identified as Person X, pleaded guilty in 2009 to second-degree murder and is serving a life sentence. Jamie Bacon is charged with conspiracy to commit murder and first-degree murder in the case and is scheduled to be tried separately this spring. Another man, Sophon Sek, is also charged with manslaughter in connection to the Surrey Six killings.

Consider others when behind the wheel

I

t’s becoming endemic. And many of us do it every day. Tailgating. Whether we engage in this dangerous and potentially deadly driving habit without thinking, or because we’re always in such a hurry as to think riding someone’s bumper will get us to our destination faster, doing so can have catastrophic consequences. Ask the people who commute daily along our thoroughfares how many fender benders they’ve encountered along the way, or worse, crashes that require medical attention for those involved, and it’s easy to understand just how widespread this problem has become. With the unpredictable weather creating slicker streets in our region, and the lack of daylight making it tougher to see, we should all be taking more care when driving. Giving people a little more space and giving yourself a little more time to reach your destination can never be a bad choice to make. Many people are also at a point where we’re teaching our children how to drive, riding with them as they gain road experience, or maybe just watching them drive off in the family car, their ‘N’ firmly attached to the rear of the vehicle. How would we feel knowing that someone else was hanging off their bumper, putting them at risk and stressing them out when they’re trying their best to adhere to the rules of the road? Likely not very impressed. Of all the interactions we have with other people during our day, driving is the one that involves putting the most trust in others to do the right thing and act responsibly. Try to remember that when you’re running late for an appointment or getting to work. Other drivers are assuming you’ll do the right thing on the road. And let’s not forget that not everybody remains calm when someone else is causing them stress by tailgating. There’s a popular phrase out there that goes something like this: A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on everyone else’s part. It may be a rather well-worn message, like “don’t drink and drive,” but we still think it’s important to consider the safety of others when we’re behind the wheel.

Archaeology tried to get the researchers to drop their lawsuit, fearing it would interfere with fragile relationships with area tribes. The U.S. Justice Department warned the Smithsonian that lead scientist Douglas Owsley and others might be in criminal conflict of interest as federal employees suing the government. Meanwhile the skeleton was mishandled and later stored in substandard conditions at a Seattle museum, where it remains today. Parts of both femurs were lost, and scientists were falsely accused of taking them. They had been removed by tribal representatives and secretly buried. Kennewick Man was found as the army was in tense negotiations with tribes on salmon fishing rights on the Columbia, their demand for removal of dams, and the $100-billion cleanup of the Hanford nuclear site. The scientists finally won their case in 2004, with a ruling that the skeleton is so old there isn’t enough evidence to show it is related to the current tribes. The judge found the army repeatedly misled the court, and assessed the government $2.4 million in costs. The U.S. Army still controls the skeleton and denies requests for further study. One final irony. Analysis shows Kennewick Man ate mostly salmon in his later years, around 6300 BCE. These are the salmon runs wiped out by dams built by U.S. Army engineers before the signing of the Columbia River Treaty with B.C. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

Don’t suffer for their past sins Editor: Re: Send a message to governments, Jan. 6 letters. I am a rational thinker, and I am voting “yes” to the upcoming referendum on transit infrastructure funding. It’s irrational to throw the baby out with the bathwater. TransLink can be reformed. But without a “yes” vote on transit funding, our transportation woes will only increase. Our economy needs it, our commuters need it, and our citizens need a reliably and efficient transit system. Vote “yes” for the future, and not “no” due to TransLink’s past sins. Now, that would be irrational! Beryl Kirk, Surrey

City in for a bumpy ride Editor: Recently, there seems to have been a continuous stream of roadworks along 152 Street in South Surrey. On my last trip, I counted 35 trenches dug and filled in from 20 Avenue to 24 Avenue. Almost all of these trenches have not been finished off well. Driving north along this major arterial route is like a trip on a roller-coaster because of the low quality of the final fill-in. It’s a pity that the city’s engineering department could not supervise this work before signing off for completion. Or are we seeing another abdication of responsibility by government to regulate the private sector, particularly its own sub-contractors, who were probably picked for their lowest-price bid. If Surrey cannot supervise its own road works, is it too much to expect that they will resurface this whole section when all the work is complete? Herb Spencer, Surrey

Greater judge than historians Editor: Now that the season of giving is over, it’s time to think of giving to those who received no gifts, nor had a feast. Having served on the street among the homeless, housed poor and addicted, three examples are offered to consider removing it from our country. The first scene is that of a cold fall night. Giving out sandwiches and refreshment, a young mother came by with a five-year-old son. He was poorly dressed and, upon receiving food, he sat on the frigid concrete to eat. Looking down on a food-smeared face, he innocently looked up and said, “Sometimes I get hungry.” Crack went my heart. The second scene is that of a

man who lived under a bridge sleeping on cardboard. He was intelligent and pleased to enter into a discussion. Casually, without any purpose, he said, “At times I wake up in the middle of the night and wish for a glass of water.” Crack went my heart. The third scene is in a back alley where there was an elderly lady, face withered and eyes of unfathomable sorrow. The air was frigid and she was clothed in a withered nightgown. She moved by, asking no quarter, fully resigned to her lot. A profound anguish swept through me and a bewilderment as to how we could allow this to be in our midst. It is clear why; there is a coldheartedness keeping it from being eradicated. It needs not to list the litany of reasons against its removal, for they are well-known and most can be refuted. Those who glory in achievements of increasing economies and performing on the world arena are assured a place in the history books. There is a greater judge than historians, and like all when the coil

is unravelled, the satisfaction of life will be shattered by the words: “You have been weighed in the balance and found lacking.” Crack will go the heart, and tears will well, but it will be too late. Marcus Aurillus, a powerful leader of an ancient world, said, “Kindness is invincible.” A greater man than he said, “When you have given to one of the least, my brother, you have given unto me.” Terry Miller, Surrey

They stand on guard for us Editor: Today, a patron of the South Surrey Indoor Pool had a fall in the women’s change room because her leg gave out. A lifeguard came in and immediately whistled for more help, and another lifeguard was on her way. The lifeguards spoke with the lady to assess her problem. They also comforted her and reassured her. Other lifeguards brought blankets to keep the lady warm.

At all times, the guards were inquiring as to her condition and administering what needed to be administered. I was so impressed with their warmth and professionalism. These lifeguards were very well trained and immediately worked together as a team to ensure that every aspect of the situation was taken care of. It is reassuring to know that the standard of lifeguarding is superb and very compassionate. Marie McConkey, Surrey

Appreciate steps made Editor: A big thank you to the two gentlemen who built the stone stairs at the far end of East Beach. The winter storms had eroded a lot of the shoreline (Wind damage, Dec. 16), making it difficult to get onto the beach. All of us who walk the beach daily are so appreciative of their hard work. Longtime Meals On Wheels volunteer Jack Hossie, seen delivering lunch with a smile to Nina Mackenzie in 2006.

Extraordinary accomplishments Editor: We at Meals On Wheels are a fortunate lot. Our volunteers tend to be of the “salt of the earth” variety. A man who was the epitome of this passed away last month. Jack Hossie joined our ranks in the early 1980s on the advice of his good friend, Percy Maggs, who was president at the time. He never looked back. Jack took on the duties of driver, day captain and vice-president, and he brought honour, humour and dedication to all three positions. He welded Monday’s team into a force to be reckoned with – be it bringing a hot meal with a smile, getting help in a needed area of a client’s life, making sure drivers had all they needed to complete their routes safely and informatively, and always coming to the rescue in the case of sudden car breakdowns. He gained great trust on both sides of the meal box. This was not without its moments. One lady on receiving her meal one day presented him with a sandal with a broken strap and asked him to get it repaired. Jack did this for her and all was well for a while. Then a few months later, she told him she’d lost one of the sandals and she didn’t know how she was going to get another pair of the same type. Jack took the

remaining one to every shoe store in the area until he found a matching size and design. She was thrilled. For Jack, no step, in the aid of others, was ever too far. We sometimes encounter great sadnesses along the way but Jack’s compassion and wisdom always helped restore balance and harmony. He had a deliciously wicked sense of humour and lived a full and well-rounded life. Tennis and swimming and travels to Hawaii were high on his list of joys but absolutely nothing could compare to his love for his wife and daughters. All of us at Meals send our heartfelt condolences out to them. Jack, if you asked him, would say he was an ordinary man. Yet to us who knew him and worked alongside him down through the years, he accomplished extraordinary things, bringing hope and smiles and comfort whereever he went. He was not alone in this. Our volunteers as a whole are an incredible gift to this community and I thank each and every one of them from the bottom of my heart. Jack may be a hard act to follow but in his honour we will follow his example and simply do our best, as he did, to make the world a gentler place to be. South Surrey’s KNV Chartered Accounts join MNP

Merger for accounting firms Alex Browne Staff Reporter

South Surrey-based accounting firm KNV Chartered Accountants (formerly Kirstein, Nedig and Vance) this week announced a merger with one of the largest national accounting and consulting firms in Canada. As of Feb. 1, it will be part of MNP, which has grown quickly since it entered the B.C. market in 2002 and is currently ranked as the fourth largest accounting firm in the province. KNV partner Dave Mitchell

wasn’t available for comment, but he said in a news release Thursday that joining MNP was “the right time, right place and right fit.” KNV, the province’s eighth largest accounting firm, was established in 1973 in White Rock and has provided accounting, auditing, tax planning and business advisory services to corporate, public sector, not-for-profit and individual clients for more than 40 years – growing to include offices in Vancouver and Kelowna, 14 partners and almost 200 professionals and support staff.

“As our clients needs continued to grow, we recognized we also needed to grow,” said Mitchell, citing MNP’s national and international resources, including upwards of 80 offices across the country and more than 3,300 team members, with access to global networks of experts and specialists. Staff of KNV and MNP will stay in their respective offices in Surrey, Vancouver and Kelowna at present, but plans are to bring the teams together in new offices in each city.

Suspects sought in home invasion Police are appealing for information in connection with an early-morning home invasion Thursday in Surrey. The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. Jan. 8, when at least four males wearing masks kicked in the front door of a two-storey home in the 5200-block of 168 Street. Four young adults were in the home at the time. One, a 24-year-old man, suffered minor injuries when he was struck with a crowbar by one of the intruders. Police believe the incident was targeted, and that the culprits may have been looking

for drugs. However, they confirmed that the Mounties’ familiarity with the residence dates back prior to when the current occupants moved in earlier this

year. A police dog unit was dispatched and officers canvassed the neighbourhood, however, no suspects were apprehended.

Anyone with information on the incident or perpetrators is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604599-0502. – Tracy Holmes

Athlete’s foot is caused by a fungal infection of the skin. It usually appears in between the toes or in the arch area of the foot. Common signs and symptoms are redness, itchiness & burning. Another very common cause is wearing damp, dirty socks and shoes, as these are prime breeding grounds for fungus. Treatment: There are several over-the-counter and prescription medications that can treat athlete’s foot. Creams, ointments or gels tend to be more effective than powders or sprays. To truly eliminate the fungus you should continue with the medication for an additional 2 weeks after the symptoms have disappeared. Prevention: Wear clean, dry socks daily. Wear sandals in public showers and around pools or hot tubs. Air-out running shoes in the sunlight. Activity Restrictions: None.

so important for your pet?

A:

It’s a fact – pet dental is one of he most important health related topics pet owners need to address. As plaque and tartar buildup around the tooth it drives the bacteria down the gum-line isolating it from oxygen and therefore creates a shield for the bacteria to begin attacking the surrounding tissue. The buildup of plaque and tartar on you pet’s teeth leads to bacterial infections that can enter the bloodstream and infect other parts of your pet’s body. Periodontal disease has been linked to heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, osteoporosis and other problems. It is important to visit your local vet for a dental exam to determine if your pet has periodontal disease. A home dental routine is also extremely important. Thankfully there are also new products that make home care so much easier. Ask us how to help! February is pet dental health month. Come in for more details.

www.wrssba.com A letter of gratitude With gratitude I am excited to announce my retirement from Hair Art Academy. To all of the clients of Hair Art Academy who have made my business a success, I thank you. Many of you have supported us for the entire 21 years and I hope you will continue for many more. I've been blessed to work with many extraordinary educators who strengthened the reputation of the academy. Thank you for your talent, your loyalty, and the many laughs we shared. A special thanks to Peter Schroeder, my right hand man, who was the Director of Hair Art Academy New West for many years before coming back to White Rock. You have been, and still are a great strength to the school. You are my rock. Thank you to all of the grads who have stayed in touch. Its wonderful to watch you succeed in your careers; many working in salons and some opening salons of their own, some traveling the world and some working at home and raising families. We appreciate your continued support of Hair Art Academy. To the students at the Academy, I'll still be around to support you in your career and future. It is my passion to see you succeed. You have taught me compassion, patience and tolerance, and blessed me with an extraordinary career. Congratulations Van Hong, president of Hair Art Academy. Your talent, enthusiasm, and business savvy brings a renewed excitement and vibration to the Academy. I encourage everyone to visit the school and experience Van's big heart and passion for the industry. Thank you! Elke, Now, I am not hanging up my scissors completely! Sources offers new addiction-recovery program

Taoist Tai Chi

An alternative to 12 steps Nick Greenizan Staff Reporter

A new program aimed to help those suffering from addiction has launched on the Semiahmoo Peninsula. Last week, Sources Community Resources held the first meeting of its new SMART Recovery program, which aims to serve as an alternative to the traditional 12-step programs popular with Alcoholics Anonymous and similar groups. SMART is an acronym for Self Management and Recovery Training, and is described as a program that teaches people “how

to change self-defeating thinking, emotions and actions.” While many 12-step programs focus on the idea of “surrendering yourself ” to a higher power as a means to recovery, SMART focuses instead on “self empowerment” explained George Passmore, Sources’ program manager for counseling and substance-use services, while adding that the program is still “very 12-step friendly.” “AA works great for millions of people all over the world, but it’s not for everybody,” said Passmore. “There are multiple paths to wellness, and hopefully this will

Open House

be helpful for some people.” Each SMART Recovery meeting starts with a lesson given by the trained volunteer facilitator, Passmore explained, and then the floor is opened to general discussion around that day’s topic. Six people turned up for last week’s inaugural meeting, and the response was excellent, he added. “I think people really enjoyed it, and got something from it,” Passmore said. For information on the program, call Sources at 604-5382522. For more on the SMART concept, visit www.smartrecovery.ca

(Grades K-7)

French Immersion is intended to develop fluency in French leading to functional bilingualism. Students study in French while following the regular BC Curriculum Prescribed Learning Outcomes. Students of all linguistic backgrounds are welcome. Parents need not speak English or French to enroll their children in French Immersion.

The Intensive Fine Arts program integrates the four areas of Fine Arts – visual, music, drama and dance – into all curriculum areas. The program strives to create a stimulating and culturally enriched learning environment where the Fine Arts are equal partners with Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science.

This program is intended to develop self-directed students with a global vision. Students learn in multi-age groups, and usually spend three years with the same teacher.

The Traditional program emphasizes a structured approach to learning whereby students acquire skills and knowledge in a systematic and sequential manner through teacher-directed instruction.

(Grades K-7)

Death Café

Is This Your Situation?!

Testosterone Te levels begin to diminish in men around age 30. In fact, by the time tim men are 60 years old, they typically produce 60% less testosterone than they th did at age 20 (a man’s sexual peak). Many men over the age of 35 may already a be feeling the effects of lower testosterone including:

Incr Increased Belly Fat Low Energy

Low Libido Mood Changes

Decreased Muscle Strength Prostate Problems and more...

Unfortunately at the same time testosterone is decreasing, estrogen levels are increasing, causing further muscle loss and gain in body fat, making it extremely difficult to maintain a healthy metabolism. Along with a program of proper nutrition and regular exercise, researchers have discovered a group of naturally proven nutrients that can help you safely reduce excess estrogen while maximizing testosterone levels. Ultimate Male Energy™ contains 100% natural ingredients like: Chrysin, Stinging Nettle Root Extract, Indole-3-Carbinol and Broccoli Sprout Powder to help restore healthy, youthful hormone balance by positively affecting both estrogen and testosterone production, which ultimately helps a man look, feel and perform at his best. Ask about Ultimate Male Energy at your local health food store today! Rate of Testosterone Secretion in Milligrams

An effort to increase awareness of death and inspire people to make the most of their lives returns to Alex House on Jan. 26. The Death Café (7-9 p.m.) is an opportunity to gather, drink tea and discuss death in a relaxed environment. Offered on a notfor-profit basis, Death Cafés are groupdirected discussions and are not intended to lead participants to any course of action. To attend the Jan. 26 café, call 604535-0015 or email Neil Fernyhough at communityprograms@ alexhouse.net – Tracy Holmes

Surrey Night Market set for 2015 The second season of the Surrey Night Market will open on May 29, organizers have announced. Described as the only multicultural night market in the Fraser Valley, the open-air market is to run from 6-11 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until Sept. 20, at the Cloverdale Exhibition Grounds (17726 62 Ave.). Featuring a variety of foods, services and goods, the market will again host performances by local bands, singers and dancers, as

well as rides and games for children and youth, and door prizes. Organizers say the 2015 night market will have a focus on community and social perspective, with one community tent dedicated to non-profit communitybased organizations. As well, a couple of market weekends will benefit food banks in the region, with non-perishable food items accepted in exchange for admission and donated to a food bank willing to partner in promoting

the initiative. Toy drives are also planned. Free admission during the second season will be offered to families of Canadian Forces and veterans living in B.C., children under 48 inches (when accompanied by their families), those who rely on a wheelchair and those aged 75 years and older. For more information, visit www.surreynightmarket.com, email surreynightmarket@gmail. com or call 604-805-3440.

The breakthrough way to SCULPT YOUR BODY! Even if you’ve endured never-ending marathon workouts, you probably have pockets of plump that won’t budge. And while going under the knife may be tempting, the pain is not! Now you don’t have to. Thanks to Zeltiq a new surgery-free FDA & Health Canada approved technique is available and New Beauty Institute is pleased to have been chosen to be able to offer the treatment.

The cool way to lose fat for him & her $100 off

Dr. C. Mok

A surgery-free, non-invasive technique that gets rid of unwanted fat!

Before the CoolSculpting procedure

How it works: As temperatures plunge, fat cells freeze long before muscle, skin or any other tissue does! Zeltiq Coolsculpting takes advantage of this. “Damaged, frozen fat cells can’t be repaired by the body, so they’re smoothing out even stubborn fat pads within two to four months” says dermatologist Mark S. Nestor, M.D., Director of the Center for Cosmetic Enhancement in Miami, Florida. And specific troublespots can be easily targeted! What to expect: Zeltiq Coolsculpting takes about one hour per treated area. Since no anaesthetics, needles, or incisions are needed you can head back to your normal activities right away; there is no downtime. Treated areas tend to look red and feel a bit stiff for about 20 minutes, and some patients experience temporary bruising, numbness, or tenderness. What studies show: “Zeltiq removes 20% of the fat from treated areas with undeniable results. It’s producing better results than the research had predicted. Patients love it!”

CoolSculpting is the revolutionary new body

contouring treatment that precisely targets the stubborn fat you want to lose. It's never been easier to sculpt the body you want – naturally, safely and without surgery or downtime. Coolsculpting with undeniable results after just one treatment.

If you’re obese, you will not be happy with this treatment, notes Caree Ludwar, owner of New Beauty Institute. “It’s meant for people who are close to their ideal body weight and want to get rid of stubborn pockets of fat – the sort of thing that wrecks the way clothing fits. However, we have had very good results with larger belly areas on some patients.”

All-Surrey high school girls basketball tournament held on weekend

Elgin Park Orcas place in the top five Rick Kupchuk

he Elgin Park Orcas were the top performers among teams from the Peninsula competing at the Surrey Fire Fighters Goodwill Classic last week at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary in Cloverdale. The Orcas placed fourth, winning their first game 67-61 over the Earl Marriott Mariners before a 62-46 loss to the eventual tournament champion Fleetwood Park Dragons in Friday night’s semifinal game. They then fell 54-45 to the host Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers in the third-place game Saturday. Abby Mitro with 13 points was the top scorer for Lord Tweedsmuir, with Lisa Tabor netting 12 for the Orcas. Devi Brauckmann of Elgin Park was selected to the Dream Team (All-star) squad, as were Tyler Ratcliffe of the Mariners, Katie Punia of the Southridge Storm and Amanda Purssel of the Semiahmoo Totems. The Storm topped Earl Marriott 50-35 in a playoff game for fifth and sixth place Friday afternoon at the Cloverdale Recreation Centre. The Totems placed seventh, finishing with a 37-28 win over the Princess Margaret Lions Saturday. Playing in the championship game for the fourth consecutive year, the Fleetwood Park Dragons and Holy Cross Crusaders needed overtime to determine the 2015 champion. Unable to take a lead in 40 minutes of regulation time, the Dragons dominated extra time and emerged as champions of the all-Surrey high school girls basketball tournament with a 55-46 victory. “It’s a bit of a battle every year,” said Dragons co-coach Pam Reynolds, after her team claimed its second

championship in the past four years. “We play really good defense and sometimes the offense comes out flat. This is the third game that we played overtime. Once we got to overtime, we relaxed, which is kind of odd.” Tournament MVP (Most Valuable Player) Cyrille Butac of the Dragons went nine-for-16 at the free throw line, finishing with 14 points. She did all her scoring in the second half after sitting out much of the first 20 minutes while in foul trouble. “Kaitlyn Mackenzie played real well for us. Cyrille, at point guard, had four fouls in the first half so we had to sit her,” explained Reynolds. “Kaitlyn came off the bench and had nine (first-half) points. And she’s recovering from (mononucleosis) so it’s pretty amazing. She and Grewal played very good defense.” Grewal was the top scorer for the winners with 20 points, and Palmegiani was the game’s highscorer with 21 points. Both were Dream Team choices. Other Dream Team selections were Emily Pearson (Fraser Heights Firehawks), Ayan Deng (Guildford Park), Sonia Sharma (Frank Hurt Hornets), Pavleen Gill (Queen Elizabeth Royals), Georgia Paterson (Princess Margaret Lions), Daughter Achan (Kwantlen Park Timberwolves), Emma Jonas (Lord Tweedsmuir), and Desirae Villanueva (North Surrey). Claire Eccles of Elgin Park was the winner of the three-point shooting contest, with Hannah Morrison of Southridge earning the Best Defensive Player award. Georgia Paterson of Princess Margaret received the Tessa Beauchamp Most Inspirational Player award and the Sullivan Heights Stars were judged the Most Sportsmanlike Team.

PACC hosts men’s open Eagles’ alum makes Hobey Baker list

Nick Greenizan Sports Reporter

It’s been a busy start to 2015 for members of the Peace Arch Curling Club. In addition to the club’s array of nightly leagues, last weekend PACC hosted Curl BC’s men’s open zone playdowns – which are a precursor to provincials, and beyond that, the Brier. And there’s very little downtime in the near future, as the club will hold its annual Bye the Sea senior women’s bonspiel, Pacific Coast Masters Curling Association playdowns and B.C. Mixed Doubles provincials over the next three weekends. “Usually, we host one, maybe two of these types of events a year, but this year we’ve got three, so it’s very busy,” said Peace Arch Curling Centre manager Kent Bird. “We’re excited, especially for the mixed doubles, because it’s provincials – it will be our biggest event.” First up is this weekend’s Bye the Sea bonspiel, a 16-team event that will feature more teams from the host club than in previous years. Seven of the 16 teams will be from Peace Arch, said PACC ladies director Jennifer MacArthur, one of the bonspiel’s organizers. “We’re really happy about that, having so many local teams this year,” she said, adding that the rest of the teams are from the Lower Mainland, with the exception of one group that is making the trip from Gibsons. “It’s a great bonspiel, and a very popular one – many years we have teams on a waiting list,” she said. BATEMAN, Helen Madeline (nee Leslie) Died January 1st, 2015. She was born March 4, 1912 in Haileybury, Ontario. She attended Queen’s University, where she met her husband, Dr. Henry Bateman. They lived in Belleville, Ontario for many years before moving to White Rock in the early 1970’s to enjoy retirement, proximity to family and the balmy weather. She is survived by her 2 children, Marilyn McQuarrie and John Bateman, her 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Helen is also survived by an older brother. She was a soft spoken woman with gentle exterior and a strong core of highly principled Scottish values. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation, in Helen’s memory to the CFUW SurreyWhite Rock Bursary Foundation, Box 735039, PPO Surrey, B.C. V4A 0B1. A private reception will be held for family and friends. dePencier, David Brian On December 31, 2014 Dave dePencier left us. He had struggled with complications from diabetes. He is mourned by his mother Sheila; his brothers Allan, Dale and Rick, his wife Edi; his son Darryl and his husband Chris; and his daughter Shelley and her husband Brad and two daughters Karis and Emily. There will be a celebration of life on February 19, 2015 at the Sandpiper Pub on Marine Drive in White Rock, BC, 5-9pm. As Dave was an enthusiastic sailor, should you wish, in lieu of flowers, a donation to Cresent Beach Search and Rescue would be preferred.

Longtime White Rock resident Muriel Crooks passed away peacefully on Boxing Day, two weeks by of her 93rd birthday. Muriel always lived life to its fullest and was the source of so much joy, fun and laughter to her family, friends and neighbors. Born and raised in Toronto, her first job was working in her family’s picture framing shop on Davenport Road. In 1940 she married her husband Bill and took up her patriotic duty as an original “Bomb Girl”, working in the GECO munitions factory in Scarborough. Searching for better opportunities when the war ended, and to be closer to her parents, William and Clara Haines (who had been living on Victoria Ave since 1938), Muriel and Bill moved to White Rock in 1946 with their three small children. While raising Bob, Virginia and Pauline in the 1950’s, Muriel was involved with the PTA, the Rebekahs, and the Order of the Royal Purple. In 1961 she returned to work, first at the post office on Campbell River Road, then as a waitress at the Ocean Beach Hotel, followed by 14 years as a cook at Berkeley Pavilion and Peace Arch Hospital. Muriel’s retirement was filled with trips aboard to places such as Russia, Spain, and the Caribbean, and of course numerous bus trips to Reno, where her lucky streak always seemed to follow her. Muriel was close to her neighbors on 20A Avenue and considered them an extension of her own family; she hosted many garden parties over the years and the highlight would always be the appearance of a special guest Muriel dressed up as a 1920’s flapper, Ugly Betty, Mother Nature or in some other well crafted disguises. Muriel was predeceased by Bill in 1997, and her cat Pepsi in 2013. She is survived by her three children, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great great grandson; her brother Ken in Ontario; her extended “family” of neighbors on 20A Avenue and many friends at the Peninsula Retirement Residence. Many thanks to the caring staff at Chartwell Crescent Gardens where Muriel spent her final months. WOOD, REINELLA Reinella Wood passed away January 7, 2015 in her 98th year following a brief illness at Peace Arch Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband Robert and is survived by her son, Stephen (Diane), her daughter, Diana (Brian), 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the loving care and support provided by Jacquie Watson during Mum’s final years.

McFadyen-Jones, Silvia Ingeborg December 6, 1923 December 29, 2014 Silvia passed from this world peacefully at Peace Arch Hospital, White Rock B.C. December 29, 2014, at the age of 91. Predeceased by Husbands Robert A. McFadyen and Edward D. Jones, Sister Senta and Mother Anna, survived by son Bruce. Silvia was born in Valga, Estonia in 1923 and endured the invasion of her country by both Nazi and Soviet forces, eventually immigrating to Canada in 1950, and moving to Vancouver in 1955. Working in the Early Childhood Education field, Silvia advanced her experience to eventually teach at several Vancouver region colleges, finally retiring to White Rock B.C. from Kwantlen College in 1988. Silvia travelled extensively in retirement, enjoying the benefits of a life both of challenge and reward. Her final decline following her 91st birthday fulfilled her often stated intent not to live beyond 90. Silvia’s last home was in Peace Arch Hospital, where the dedicated, professional and caring staff of Weatherby Pavilion provided a secure, comfortable refuge in her final days. Our heartfelt gratitude go out to them all.

(Bob) and Lesley (Mike). Grandchildren Christopher, Danielle (James), Natasha (Josh), Shaun (Saskia), Jason (Sam), Mandy,

Cassondra (Curtis) and Korey (Michelle). Great grandchildren Brodie, Alaura, Lola, Lelia, Bella, and Kian, also his sisters and brothers in England. Keith was born in ChorltonCum-Hardy near Manchester, England. He immigrated to Canada in 1966 with his wife and three daughters. His favorite soccer team was Manchester United and he also enjoyed playing soccer. Keith was a past member of Mann Park Lawn Bowling Club, which he enjoyed for many years. He loved spending time with his family and in recent years his great grandchildren brought him much happiness and laughter. He was well known for his humour, singing and could put a smile on anyone’s face. Humour was a big part of him right to the end, along with his mischievous twinkle in his eye. Keith spent the last fifteen months in Czorny Alzheimer Centre. The family is very grateful for Keith to have been in such wonderful, caring, and loving place. A special thanks to all the staff. You will always have a special place in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society.

No service will be held, by request. Donations would be appreciated to Silvia’s favourite organization: Medicins Sans Frontieres.

Dorothy Rosenman passed away peacefully in White Rock , BC on Monday, January 5, 2015. Dorothy was born in Melita, Manitoba on June 29, 1919 to George and Nellie Carr. Along with sister Geraldine and brother Glenn, the Carr family moved to a homestead farm at Pipestone, Manitoba. After high school Dorothy graduated with top honors in hairdressing and manicuring at the Beautician College in Brandon, Manitoba she met her husband Victor of sixty-three years. During the wartime years their son Simon was born and the young family was stationed at RCAF bases at Gimli, Manitoba, and Moncton, New Brunswick, returning to Brandon for over forty years in various business enterprises where they were very supportive and active in community service organizations including the Brandon Chapter of the IODE. As one of the first female pilot graduates at the Brandon Flying Club, Dorothy worked with the Amelia Earhart Ninety-Nines International organization of Women pilots in creating the first Manitoba chapter for women aviators. Dorothy was a talented artist and supporter of the Allied Arts Center studying oils and watercolor with a number of noted mentors. Several trophies attest to her success and many friendships through curling and golf over the years in Brandon and later at Hazelmere in Surrey. Upon retirement in 1983, Victor and Dorothy moved to White Rock, BC to be closer to their grandchildren. They lived at Englesea Place until Victor’s passing in 2004 when Dorothy moved to the Peninsula Senior Retirement Residence where she was an active participant in many of its activities. After a recent brief illness Dorothy lived at Whitecliff Care Unit in White Rock. Dorothy is fondly remembered and survived by her three children, Simon (Marsoe) of Aldergrove, BC; Wayne (Joan) of Toronto, Ontario; and Terri-Lee (Allen) Wells of Langley, BC and her three grandchildren, Taisha (Bill ) Purper, Lindsey Wells, and Michael (Amanda ) Wells and 4 great granddaughters.
