◆ COVER STORY
LEADING CHANGE Working on a team project in China in 2008, Theresa Kingston discovered leadership qualities she never knew she had. Now she quietly passes on her knowledge to students in a Chinese program called IDEAS.
‘We’re all the same. At the person level, we’re all the same.’ – Theresa Kingston
KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
hen Theresa Kingston W signed up for her first trip to China in 2008, she never
thought she’d be back more than a dozen times in six years. Her trips to China began with working on a migrant labour rights project with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. There she discovered a quality she didn’t know she had. “It wasn’t a gift I knew that I had, understanding culture and being respectful of culture.” At the end of that trip, Kingston was asked to stay in Beijing for a week to meet David Mulroney, the Canadian ambassador to China at the time. Instead of travelling, Kingston decided to use her time to help. “I got five different offers,” Kingston said. One of those was IDEAS, a youth rights organization, that she’s been volunteering with ever since. While her first trip to China was initiated through the FCM, Kingston has become so passionate about her volunteer work that she’s spent much of her free time since travelling back there. The lesson’s she learned have been invaluable, she says. “We’re all the same. At the person level, we’re all the same. “We may eat different food, we may live in different homes, we may speak different languages but parents all want the same thing for their kids and kids all want the same thing.” She took another trip to China in 2011 and has gone many times since on her own time and her own dime. She spent July 2014 at a youth leadership camp in Beijing helping craft a public participation guide being

used in multiple Chinese municipalities; she based it on her beliefs about the importance of empowering and respecting youth. “My fundamental belief and our job on this earth is around respect. Respecting every human being who we come into contact with, even those who might not respect us. It’s really appreciation of the way we can serve.” While the common saying is that respect must be earned, Kingston doesn’t see it that way. “I call bullshit. Who am I as a leader to say you have to prove yourself good enough for me to respect you? It’s given unconditionally.” While as Port Alberni’s director of corporate services and deputy city manager Kingston is constantly speaking to crowds and leading workshops, she’s an introvert—something that

helps guide her approach to leadership. “It really leads into my philosophy around leadership, that my job is to serve people.”
A traditional view of organizations and leadership places the heads of an organization at the top of the pyramid and at the front of the
organization. “I really subscribe to the opposite, that actually their job all the way through this is to support and serve others,” said Kingston. “So my role as a leader isn’t to be at the front, my role as a leader is to support everyone else to be out in front.” “The most important people in this community are the citizens.” Another idea that Kingston doesn’t put much stock into is that “youth are the leaders of tomorrow.” “Absolutely not, they’re leaders now and they’re making a difference.” There’s no “magic age” that a person needs to reach before their opinions are valid, Kingston said. It’s a problem that’s present all over the world, from China to Canada to our own community. “Most governments are paternalistic to youth.” It’s an approach that she’s hoping to change not only abroad but here in Port Alberni. “The city has got a memorandum of understanding with IDEAS to a program called A-Action.” A-Action will be a youth volunteering initiative through Parks & Recreation that Kingston hopes to get off the ground in the next few months. Following her philosophy of making a difference one person at a time, she hopes to empower youth here to make a change in their own community. “Adults and youth need to work in partnership and the adults’ role is to facilitate and get the heck out of the way.” Anyone interested in the upcoming program is invited to call Kingston at 250-720-2506 or Nathan Kwan from Parks & Recreation at 250-723-2181. reporter@albernivalleynews.com twitter.com/AlberniNews

Pedestrian bridge advances a step A pedestrian and cycling crossing over the Roger Creek ravine just got a little closer to reality when council referred John Mayba’s proposal to the city’s strategic planning process on Monday. According to Mayba, who presented his idea on behalf of the Alberni Valley Transition Town Society and the Alberni Environmental Coalition, his proposed crossing would benefit the whole community as well as being a draw for tourists. Mayba feels that the
time is ripe for a nonvehicle crossing of the Roger Creek ravine. “The city has undertaken an Active Transportation Plan recently in recognition of increased interest in trails, cycling and walking for health and commuting benefits,” he said, adding that “the city’s endorsement of the Active Transportation Plan brings it a step closer to being able to apply for grant programs” including the Bike BC Cycling Infrastructure program, grants from BC Hydro and the federal government. The project also has seed funding in the amount of $4700 set
aside by interested community members from former Premier Gordon Campbell’s carbon tax. While Mayba doesn’t currently have a dollar figure for the bridge costs, city engineer

ICF has gone off the rails Battle for Kennewick man continues How many railway ties can you buy with the money you would pay a lawyer to pursue a defamation lawsuit? We believed the Island Corridor Foundation’s raison d’etre was to re-start rail service on Vancouver Island from Victoria to Courtenay. More and more, it seems the ICF is all about protecting its own, feeding and protecting its administrative beast. The latest example — it’s not like we have actual rail service to cite — is the ICF’s decision to pursue a defamation lawsuit against Regional District of Nanaimo director Julian Fell. While we once believed the ICF’s responsibility was to re-start and oversee contracts relating to a rejuvenated passenger rail service on the Island, we learned the foundation has a different, or additional responsibility. “ICF co-chair Judith Sayers said the board has a responsibility to protect the credibility of the foundation and the personal reputations of the directors and staff,” said a news release relating to the lawsuit filed against Fell. We can’t responsibly comment on the allegations in the lawsuit, or the things that Fell said and wrote that presumably instigated the court action. That’s all before the courts now, and nothing has been proven. However, we can comment on how we believe this to be another example of how the ICF has lost its way. The reason this should matter to people in the central Island is where the ICF and its staff gets its funding, and what should be expected from the ICF for those funds. We don’t believe the ICF has secured enough funding to re-start rail service anywhere on Vancouver Island, certainly not to and from Parksville Qualicum Beach. The only news of note from the ICF in months has been the lawsuit against Fell. We question the focus of the ICF board and its staff. — Parksville-Qualicum Beach News

ICTORIA – My Christmas reading included a fascinating new book called Kennewick Man, a study of skeletal remains discovered in 1996 on the bank of the Columbia River in eastern Washington. He was an ancient hunter buried just south of B.C. almost 9,000 years ago, in the Early Holocene period following the last Ice Age. Among the oldest humans found along the West Coast of North America, he sparked an unprecedented battle by the Smithsonian Institution to examine the skeleton and publish the book late last year. The most controversial evidence came from the skull. It doesn’t match the classic Mongoloid profile of modern aboriginal people, key to the theory that the earliest humans reached North America by

point stuck in his hip. The authors conclude from chemical analysis that “Kennewick Man could not have been a longtime resident of the area where he was found, but instead lived most of his adult life somewhere along the Northwest and North Pacific coast where marine mammals were readily

available.” This suggests migration by sea, perhaps from a great distance. The U.S. Army seized the skeleton. The scientists sued and eventually won the right to a brief examination. The court case exposed brutal and illegal actions of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and federal departments to destroy the site and intimidate the scientists. U.S. law demanded all remains from before European settlement be repatriated for burial by local tribes, without examination. Umatilla tribe spokesman Armand Minthorn wrote in 1996: “We view this practice as desecration of the body and a violation of our most deeply-held religious beliefs. “From our oral histories, we know that our people have been part of this land since the beginning of time. We do not believe that our people migrated here from another continent, as the scientists do.”

I would like to express my appreciation for Elisabeth Hill and Sarah Emmonds in Alberni District Secondary School’s Social Justice class. Under the guidance of their teacher, Anne Ostwald, they recently held several fundraising events to purchase gifts for filling Christmas baskets. The baskets were delivered to some of the seniors in town who have no friends or family and must spend Christmas alone. Such thoughtfulness can make such a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate than most of us. I hope through
sharing this story that more people will reach out to help seniors and others in need in our community. Greta Hill, Port Alberni
Lift your spirits now, not later To the Editor,
If anyone deals with these “post-holiday blues,” it’s too late for this year. However, before we realize it, Christmas 2015 will be upon us again. Let’s use our iPhones and warn ourselves on Nov. 1 that overspending at the end of the year means reading again on the first week of January how we can “lift spirits.” Let’s become our own “experts,” and take it a bit easier on ourselves. For sure
our loved ones don’t want us to become frantic again, because they just wished us a Happy New Year. Ary Sala, Fanny Bay
Health care in a crisis of its own making To the Editor,
There is no new multi-level care facility on the horizon in the Alberni Valley. Therefore we’re stuck forever with the existing residential care beds at Fir Park and Echo Villages and Rainbow Gardens, none being added since 1992. Rainbow Gardens wants to add a few cottages (assisted living) like those at 10th Avenue and Wallace. There are no plans to add the eight acute-care beds at
West Coast General Hospital for which the hospital was designed. And, to add insult to injury, local residential care placement is done by Island Health in Victoria, not in Port Alberni. Lastly, we’re facing the prospect of our existing population getting older and more retirees moving here. In my opinion, the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District hospital board is useless and so is Island Health insofar as the Alberni Valley is concerned. For decades, local health matters were run locally. The hospital had its own board of directors and things went along relatively smoothly. Then some genius established first the
Central Vancouver Island Health Authority and then the very expensive disaster now known as Island Health. So now we have a crisis and nobody is doing anything about it except to offer a few Band-Aid solutions. Richard Berg, Port Alberni
Writer pans Cosby’s fans To the Editor,
Bill Cosby used his fame to pursue a devious game. It had one disturbing aim: score every pretty dame. But who can you blame? Fans are still intoxicated by his name. They ignore what his victims claim; wanting to believe it’s all a frame. His fans are lame. Lloyd Atkins, Vernon
Remains subjected to court battle, mishandling The head of the Society for American Archaeology tried to get the researchers to drop their lawsuit, fearing it would interfere with fragile relationships with area tribes. The U.S. Justice Department warned the Smithsonian that lead
scientist Douglas Owsley and others might be in criminal conflict of interest as federal employees suing the government. Even the White House weighed in against them. Meanwhile the skeleton was mishandled and later stored in substandard conditions at a Seattle museum, where it remains
today. Parts of both femurs were lost, and scientists were falsely accused of taking them. They had been removed by tribal representatives and secretly buried. Kennewick Man was found as the army was in tense negotiations with tribes on salmon fishing rights on the Columbia,
their demand for removal of dams, and the $100 billion cleanup of the Hanford nuclear site. The scientists finally won their case in 2004, with a ruling that the skeleton is so old there isn’t enough evidence to show it is related to the current tribes. The judge found the army repeatedly
misled the court, and assessed the government $2.4 million in costs. The U.S. Army still controls the skeleton and denies requests for further study. The spear point, for example, could show the location where he was injured. One final irony. Analysis shows Kennewick Man ate
mostly salmon in his later years, around 6300 BCE. These are the salmon runs wiped out by dams built by U.S. Army engineers before the signing of the Columbia River Treaty with B.C. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

It’s an irony of our modern lives that while technology is continually invented that saves us time, we use that time to do more and more things, and so our lives are more fast-paced and hectic than ever. Life moves at such a fast pace that it seems to pass us by before we can really enjoy it. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. Let’s rebel against a hectic lifestyle and slow down to enjoy life. The bible tells us that even Jesus had to slow things down a little. We read in Mark 6:31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

◆ 2014: YEAR IN REVIEW
Tsunamis of the political kind ruled Alberni Valley News reporter Katya Slepian continues with our year in review of 2014, beginning with the 50th anniversary of the tsunami that hit the city in March.
March
M
arch marked the 50 year anniversary of the 1964 tsunami which struck Port Alberni in
the middle of the night on March 27. Caused by the Anchorage earthquake, the tsunami destroyed cars and buildings but luckily no one was killed.

An end to invasive species in the Valley might have started in March, when two Victoria-based scientists spent a bit of time in Port Alberni in March. Chris Tutle and Layne Woodfin of Cotyledon Consulting took the genetic approach, hoping to find a “kill switch” within a plant’s genetic code. From high tech to blood, sweat and tears, the Bulldogs’ playoff run was cut off by a 5-4 overtime loss to Victoria. The Tseshaht First Nations scored $1.469 million from the federal government 3.3-kilometre sewage expansion project. Chief councillor Hugh Braker said that the project would facilitate job creation and population growth in the area. School closure decisions were stop and go during March, with the school board seeking legal advice over its decision to close Gill Elementary, re-purpose Eighth Avenue to house VAST and leave all other schools the same. Municipal government was equally messy, with council and mayor squaring off over improvements to Canal Beach, with
councillors of the opinion that the $500,000 shouldn’t be spent on the beach until a firm plan was in place. Tensions in the council chambers didn’t stop there council voting down Douglas’ $1000 request to go to Ottawa to attend a meeting with federal officials ahead of a Federation of Canadian Municipalities meeting the same week. Douglas said that the trip would have raised Port Alberni’s profile nationally while councillors stated that not only was such a trip pointless but they didn’t trust Douglas enough to let him go. While Douglas later apologized for how heated the debate got, a letter sent to local media from then Coun. Rob Cole showed that divisions were still in place. Perhaps remembering that this was an election year, council voted to increase residential taxes by 2.0 per cent ad not the 5.3 per cent discussed earlier. Multiple projects, from a waterfront road to a Harbour Quay clock tower upgrade, were pushed to next year to keep the mill
rate increase low. Good news returned to Port Alberni with the possibility of a satellite launch site being built here after Space Launch Canada signed a three-year agreement with the University of British Columbia to construct three satellites. The steam donkey at McLean Mill also saw an upgrade to its steam tubes. Construction also began on a new Roger Creek bridge just past the hospital. The existing culvert was prone to getting plugged by logs upstream and the new bridge would ensure no washout occurred.
April
A
pril started off on a sour note, with Literacy Alberni’s government funding slashed—$110,000 was cut from the English as a Second Language funding and there was no mention of literacy funding in the provincial budget. Comox physician Dr. Saren Azar, who spent time in war-torn Syria made a presentation to Port Albernians in late March. His upbringing amongst the devastation in Iran motivated him. Continued / A20

Council forms coal committee
Jane Armstrong, Maggie Paquet, Mike Lewis, Dr. Art Martell and Otto Langer will form the Raven Underground Coal Environmental Application Review Committee.
Mayoral business trip
Mayor Mike Ruttan will be heading to Vancouver later this month to meet with businesses to discuss possible business ventures in Port Alberni. Ruttan will be meeting with the CEOs of Catalyst, Western Forest Products and Jim Pattison to ensure that they know that the city remains open for business.
No smoking at playgrounds
Council passed a motion asking city staff to prepare a report and recommendations regarding banning smoking at all playgrounds within city limits.
In-camera to be revealed
Council passed a motion directing staff to implement a policy for releasing non-sensitive in-camera information to the public at the following regular council meeting via a special section on the council agenda.
Potential pesticide ban
Following the passing of bylaws permitting the keeping of bees and chickens within the city, council directed staff to prepare a report regarding the potential for a ban on the use of pesticides.
University tax rate lopsided
The University of Victoria owns property on Mallory Drive in Port Alberni worth $877,000, yet their tax bill to Port Alberni for 2014 is just $216. And that’s not sitting well with city council, who once again has objected to the way the province’s universities grants-in-lieu program works. Councils all over B.C. have complained, but the province isn’t listening, a city report noted.

Armada takes second at Totem KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Both the boys and girls senior basketball teams from Alberni District Secondary School ended the 60th annual Totem Tournament in second place after three days of hard fought games. The girls started off strong, beating the Highland Rangers
71-5 before slipping a little to win over the Kwalicum Kondors by only one point with a score of 46-45. While the girls started their final game with a lead in the first quarter, they ended the game with a 62-57 loss to the Isfeld Ice. While it was difficult to come so close yet ultimately lose the first place spot, senior
girls coach Al Seredick said that despite a couple of defensive lapses early in the third quarter he was “unbelievably proud of the girls, they played with incredible heart, with incredible character.” The boys won 74-51 over the Stelly’s Stingers on Thursday, 63-54 over the Ballenas Whalers before losing their
close fought game for first place to the Guildford Park Sabres 72-64. “I’m very proud and happy,” said senior boys coach Neelam Parmar, adding that he was happy with the calibre of teams that the tournament drew compared to prior years and that it was “good test for us.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com twitter.com/AlberniNews
Over the Christmas holidays Alberni wrestlers continued to practice on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Some members took the opportunity for kids to travel to Christmas camps to gain valuable experience at the elite level. The next major competition for the Alberni squad will be at the BC Age Class in Richmond on Thursday, Jan. 15. The annual Alberni Invitational is scheduled for Jan. 22–24. It will be hosted at the Alberni District Secondary School this year, with close to 40 teams expected to participate.

Azar said his own history made him realize he had to do something to help aid Syrian refugees. With 2014 marking 50 years since the 1964 tsunami, better tsunami warnings were a hot topic. Scientists came to Port Alberni, which is a high risk tsunami zone, to discuss a tsunami prediction model that would give better and faster warnings than the current system. Maryann Rumney donated part of her liver to her Hepatitis C stricken aunt. The gift had all the more meaning as Rumney was an adoptee and had only met her aunt nine months prior. On the sports front, a skip from Port Alberni helped the Vancouver Island curling team take bronze at the 2014 ATB Financial Canadian Masters Curling Championship. Alberni artist Shayne Lloyd put on an exhibit at the Rollin Art Centre, showcasing his woodburning prowess. A new program for
seniors this month. Called Better at Home, the service is meant to help seniors live independently for longer. School District 70 was back in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, with the public demanding more transparent budget information while Alberni teachers started their first bit of job action by skipping recess. Retired Port Alberni resident Ed Marshall is trying to replace honey bees, who have mysteriously been dying of, with the smaller and likely to sting mason bees who can take over the job of pollinating crops.

Port Alberni’s uptown business owners stepped up to the plate and
busted out ‘graffiti busting’ kits after the Coulson Group threatened to pull out of the area following repeated tagging of its buildings. The kits were made available to all business in the Alberni Valley. More impressive performance were celebrated in late April, as the News’ own editorial team of editor Susan Quinn, and reporters Wawmeesh Hamilton and Christopher Sun took home three awards at the Yukon Community Newspaper Awards Gala. The awards didn’t end there, with the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce naming Shaw TV journalist Nancy Wilmot the Citizen of the Year. Our year in review will continue in Tuesday’s paper.
HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Don (Twitter) Hill, a long time teacher and principal in the Alberni Valley. The freckled-faced high school basketball star married his childhood sweetheart Greta (Quist) and went on to raise four children here in his hometown. When school was out, he could often be seen driving his Volkswagen van to their Sproat Lake property, packed with family and neighbourhood kids. Don enjoyed retirement during which time he developed a passion for the stock market. He spent many hours sitting with his dog Jenny watching BNN and enjoying the occasional glass of Calona medium dry. Humble to a fault, he had a big heart that he wore on his sleeve for all who knew him. He will be missed greatly by his wife Greta, sons Mike, Rob (Darlene) Richard (Linda) and his daughter Cari Ann (Gary) and their families (Christine, Lisa, Elisabeth, Matthew, Bridget, Weston and Quinn. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the SPCA on Don and Jenny’s behalf.

Work will soon begin on a yellow cedar tsunami memorial to be erected at the corner of Argyle Street and Kingsway Avenue, now that city council has endorsed the Young Professionals of the Alberni Valley (YPAV) public art project. With endorsement from the heritage commission, and $1,250 in grant money from the Rotary Arts District, council offered city staff time to install the artwork on the corner of the street where the Port
Alberni Train Station is located. “We want to get it done by May,” said YPAV spokesperson Katya Slepian. Port Alberni artist Shayne Lloyd, who is known for his wood burning, has been commissioned to create the artwork— three 2x6-foot yellow cedar planks set on a simple metal base. Each plank will feature wood burned images depicting Alberni Valley history. Wood will be sourced at McLean Mill, and Canadian Alberni Engineering has agreed to make the base, Slepian said.

Having the navigation system was great as getting to our destination was a little tricky, and finding our way in the dark could have been a minor trial. Our friendly ‘nav-lady’ delivered us easily. I especially liked getting plenty of warning about upcoming turns. Some navigation systems instruct you to turn at the very last moment, which is not helpful. Often our ‘nav-lady’ gave us two warnings sometimes even three ‘turn left in 250 metres’, ‘turn left in 100 metres’. Believe me it was comforting. Faith in her voice led Sarah Smith to music BLACK PRESS
From the moment someone suggested to Sarah Smith that she could make a living off her musical talents everything changed. “When I heard that, I put in a few more days in the military and then I ended up quitting and I started music right away,” Smith said. Since that decision, Smith has gone to become the lead singer of a band, have a successful solo career, tour across the country and open for the likes of The Trews, Sam Roberts and Bif Naked. On Friday (Jan. 23) the Southern poprock artist will be making her first ever appearance in Port Alberni when she takes the stage at Char’s Landing. “I am looking forward to it,” Smith said her upcoming show in Port Alberni. “Rumour has it you have a pretty awesome little part of the earth over there on Vancouver Island.” Smith’s performance in Port Alberni is the
second stop of the Vancouver Island portion of a lengthy nationwide tour that began in Ontario. “I’ve been touring as a musician for probably about 14 years,” Smith said. “I’ve been touring all over Canada … and this is the first time ever landing on the Island.” Instead of driving out to British Columbia, Smith participated in VIA Rail’s Artist on Board program. The program allows artists to perform and travel on various VIA Rail routes for a reduced price. Smith, who has structured her tour along the route of the train, travelled to British Columbia aboard VIA and will return home to Ontario the same way. “It was cool. This was my first being on a train and it blew my mind,” Smith said. “You’re kind of in a different world. There is no Wi-Fi, no TV’s, and no cellphones. It was just people.” Smith grew up near London, Ont., and attended the Royal Military College in

Kingston, Ont., where she was working towards a career in the military. “I grew up in a small town and I had good grades and I was kind of an all around person and I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life,” she said. As a child, Smith had experimented with songwriting and singing but never entertained the idea

of going anywhere with it. “I got a lot of positive feedback as a child when I would
write music,” she said. “People would be moved by music. I could see them being moved. I could see them smiling or crying or whatever emotion the song was about, it was moving them.” It wasn’t until someone told her that she could actually make a living off her music that she decided to become a musician. “I knew I had some sort of gift to write music but when that person told me that I could actually have a career in music that was the pivotal moment,” she said. In the early 2000s, Smith became the lead singer of The Joys, a rock band that would take her around the continent. “It was just an awesome adventure,” Smith recalled. “It was
a team of four that were looking for fun and adventure and loved meeting new people and we partied away across Canada and the United States.” As a member of The Joys, Smith played more than 200 shows a year throughout North America, including performances at South By South West in Texas. “We were like a dysfunctional family. It was beautiful and dramatic all at the same time,” Smith recalled. “It is something that I will look back on very fondly. Being in a band as a unit is something that you can never replace.” In 2012, after thousands of kilometres and countless memories
The Joys broke up. “I cried my eyes out when the band broke up,” Smith said. “I thought it was the end of my life.” That same year, Smith, who had always had a solo career on the side, decided to go fulltime. She released her debut solo album, Stronger Now, a 10-song album that has earned positive reviews on iTunes. Last year, she followed up with the release of The Journey. “I feel like the songs have a deeper meaning,” Smith about the record. “I dug deep inside myself and I connected with a lot of the feelings that I have had on my journey so far.” Smith performs with Lonnie G at Char’s Landing, 4815 Argyle St. at 8 p.m.
