World Junior moment shared with Saints Selkirk College Saints defenceman Stefan Virtanen shares in World Junior moment CASTLEGAR – It’s a game that will take prominence in Canadian hockey lore and for Selkirk College Saints defenceman Stefan Virtanen, last week’s Canada-Russia World Junior Championship game had extra special significance. Stefan’s brother Jake Virtanen was a key component of the world champion juniors that triumphed over the Russians 5-4 before a packed house at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto last Monday night. The power forward delivered a couple of big hits and provided grit that helped propel the Canadian squad to the top of the world. “I wish I could have been there, but I watched every game religiously,” says Virtanen, who is four years older than his only sibling. “It was such a big moment for our family. I talked with my parents about it, you don’t think as a parent that one of your kids is going to play for his country in a sport when you sign them up when they are five years old. My brother has worked really hard over the past couple years and he made the most of his opportunity.” The older Virtanen watched the game on television with several of his Selkirk Saints teammates at his house in Castlegar. As he did many times in the tournament, Jake made a statement early in the gold medal final when he levelled Russian forward Vladislav Kamenev at centre ice. “I kind of laughed when that happened… that’s what happens when people try to hit him,” Stefan says of the thundering hit. “This was a big game, I knew he would have two or three big hits and that was one of

them.” A Natural from an Early Age The Virtanen brothers grew up in the Langley and Abbotsford. Though they played many sports, it was hockey that dominated the scene. Following in his brother’s footsteps, Jake had standout skills from a young age. Making his way through minor hockey, Jake ended up as the first overall pick in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft when he was chosen by the Calgary Hitmen. “You just knew… he has a very natural talent,” Stefan says of his brother’s skills on the ice. At the 2014 NHL Entry Draft at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Jake was chosen sixth overall by the Vancouver Canucks. Stefan and his parents were at the draft to help share in the special moment. “Growing up in the greater Vancouver area, our favourite team was the Canucks,” says Stefan. “We’ve watched hundreds of Canucks games, so it’s a surreal feeling your little brother gets drafted by the team you have watched your whole life growing up.” Big Brother Leads the Way As a key member of the Selkirk College Saints, Stefan is a hardnosed defenceman who patrols the blueline with skill and strength. Like his younger brother, Stefan had a great deal of success in minor hockey and was a sought after prospect by junior teams. He started his junior career with the BCHL’s Williams Lake Timberwolves in 2009 and the next season headed east to the SJHL where he played with the Flin Flon Bombers. In the northern Manitoba com-
munity, Stefan had the opportunity to taste hockey in a passionate community that turned out such NHL legends as Bobby Clarke and Reggie Leach. “Flin Flon was awesome,” Stefan says. “It was one of the best times I had in junior, it’s a small town but you play in front of 2,000 to 2,500 people packed into your home rink.” After two seasons in the SJHL, Stefan inched west and finished his junior career with the Calgary Mustangs in the AJHL. After his final season, Stefan signed a pro contract with the Brampton Beast of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) and attended the team’s rookie camp. He was sent to Mississippi Surge of the SPHL, but soon returned to Canada to consider his options. While looking into post-secondary avenues that would allow him to continue playing hockey, Stefan first considered Simon Fraser University. After making some inquiries he was contacted by former Selkirk Saints head coach Jeff Dubois who painted a pretty attractive picture of life in the West Kootenays. “I didn’t want to commute to SFU every day, I just wanted to live in a small town again because that was basically most of my junior career was,” says Stefan. “More people come to your games, you know more people, it’s a better atmosphere… it seemed like the right place to be.” Stefan enrolled in the Business Administration Program and joined the Saints for the second half of the 2013-2014 season. Paired with Tanner Lenting, the blueline duo was key to the Saints winning their second straight BCIHL Championship last March before a packed house at
Stefan (left) and Jake (right) Virtanen are both pursuing different hockey pathways. This past summer, the brothers had an opportunity to be together at their Lower Mainland home during the off-season. the Castlegar Recreation Complex. “It was such an amazing feeling to come into a team and being able to help win a championship for the college,” Stefan says. Pride in Family and Country Though his commitment to his own career path prevented Stefan from joining his family in Toronto for the World Junior Championship, the two brothers were in daily contact throughout the tournament. They Skyped before games, talked after games and used various forms of social media to stay in constant contact. Before the gold medal game against the Russians, Stefan offered simple advice to his little brother. “I just told him to play the role the coach wants him to play and he will get his opportunity to get his ice time,” he says. “Before the gold medal game I just told him to be smart with the puck, do the simple things and try to stay calm.”
It worked as Jake made several key plays that helped Canada capture one of its most memorable international victories. A record 7.1 million viewers took in the thrilling gold medal final on television, but few Canadians can claim similar feelings as the big brother sitting in Castlegar. “When your little brother calls you ten minutes after getting off the ice in such a huge game, it’s pretty special that you are one of the first people he thinks of in that moment,” says Stefan. And what did Jake Virtanen tell his big brother? “He told me that he doesn’t think there will be anything else as cool as this,” says Stefan. “To win a game like that in front of the home fans in Canada, he said the feeling when you are standing there with the trophy and the gold medal, there’s 20,000 people singing O Canada… he said you get the chills.”

daily goings-on of a dusty remote town that wasn’t incorporated as a city until six years later. In the first edition, Thompson explains a brave deed by Chief Engineer Sproat of the steamer Lytton, who encumbered by clothes and extra heavy shoes sprang into the chilly waters of the swift Columbia and brought a nearly drowned man, Redney Robinson, to shore. The story is replete in description and a little judgemental as he writes, “if the man had kept still and allowed himself to be rescued - the chief would have been able to complete the feat without much trouble.” Then two columns to the right, Thompson writes “He Lies On the Mountain Side, Near Trail,” in a

Those were the days — town lots in Trail started at $125, meals were 15 cents at the local eatery, and soaking in a tub was available any hour of the day or night at the Charles Ross bath house under the hill. And when a person of note from Rossland visited, there was sure to be a detailed recounting under the Trail Creek News “Personal” column. The date was Oct. 19, 1895 when Volume 1 of the Trail Creek News was first inked on a handpress, courtesy of American settler, W.F. Thompson. The office was a 1750-square-foot shanty on Bay Ave. near Portland St., and rumoured to be filled to the doors with up-to-date printing material. The 120-year old document recently surfaced in the Trail Museum and Archives, and today remains the colourful and entertaining read it probably was to the area’s pioneers 12 decades ago. The brown wrapping paper used for the inaugural four-page edition was said to be borrowed from a neighbouring grocer, though Thompson had grand plans for future publications and had no inhibitions about proclaiming his intent. A weekly newspaper published in the interest of the Trail Creek mining region, he stated on Page 2, highlighting “and for the financial advancement of its proprietor.” At $2 per year in advance, Trail Creek News subscribers could get the news of the day and learn about the town’s prized amenities such as

the I.X.L. Restaurant which boasted the best cooks and best meals in the city; the Trail House dining room that supplied every obtainable delicacy for 15 cents; or the Trail House Laundry which promised service and delivery on short notice with work done first class for reasonable rates. Thompson touted Trail as “a good town to tie fast to,” and “the town where smelters grow,” as he plugs the “noble structure that is rising foot by foot on the b row of the hill overhanging the beautiful town of Trail.” He describes the smelter as the most important enterprise in West Kootenay because the new build was employing 175 men. In rich, descriptive style, Thompson also had a few words for those who might not have agreed with his stance. There are those who claim that smelter smoke is injurious to the health, he writes. But when it first rolls forth from the lofty chimneys of the Trail smelter in December next, its appearance heralding the advancement of the progress of the West Kootenay District,...the offer of employment to thousands of people and the eternal success of the town of Trail – every man will take off his hat to greet the descending smelter smoke, which will come to them as balm to the nostrils of the progressive North America. In today’s world of politically correct news reporting, the writer’s opinion is generally reserved for an editorial. Thompson, however, has no qualms about inserting his viewpoint into each story. His literary style makes for an amusing read as he recounts the

separate rendition about the subsequent burial of Mr. Robinson, who succumbed to acute congestion of the lungs. Thompson writes, he was “taken to a beautiful place on the high plateau about half a mile above the town and there consigned to the friendly bosom of Mother Earth.” Another cheeky headline titled “A Bull in a China Closet,” tells of Topping Hanna’s bull, that after a long picnic during the summer was nearing its end due to ‘midnight depredations. ‘The story is a play-by-play according to ‘a certain cook in a certain hotel in Trail,’ who was awakened by a noise in the kitchen. Upon stepping into the dining room, the unfortunate man was met with ‘bellows’ and chased through the establishment by the
animal. “Then ensued the usual proceedings that follow the entry of a bull in a china shop, until the cook succeeded in driving the bovine out of doors,” he added. While there’s no silver or gold commemoration for more than a century of news reporting, the Trail Times staff decided now is the time to honour all the people who have typed, pressed, written, delivered, or simply read their way into the 120-year history of the Silver City’s only surviving newspaper. Over the course of the year, we will actively seek stories from people in the community such as long time subscribers, paper carriers and retired employees, who have memories to share about how the Trail Times has impacted their lives. Our goal is to share personal memories that spotlight how a local newspaper can deeply affect the community that surrounds it. Also in the works, is a monthly feature that highlights an outstanding event or moment in each decade form 1895 until present. In the Historical Portraits of Trail, provided by Sarah Benson from the Trail Museum and Archives, Thompson sold the business to W.K. Esling and W.E. Blackner in 1897. The paper was later sold to Mr Elmer Hall, a Trail pioneer who founded Hall Printing in 1919. The Trail Creek News became the Trail Daily Times in 1928 and continued to run the presses on Cedar Avenue until the 1980s. Black Press purchased the daily newspaper in 2010, and through an advanced computer system, print the now four-day-a-week Trail Times publication in Penticton.

Cadets take exams to take flight this summer Three West Kootenay area Royal Canadian Air Cadets wrote their flying scholarship qualification exams on Saturday. The trio are from Trail, Castlegar and Nelson. From 531 Trail Squadron, Sgt Sharman Thomas, from 581 Castlegar Squadron, Sgt Jacob MacDonald, and from 561 Nelson Squadron, F/Sgt Andrew Pfeffer. In addition to their regular cadet activities, the local cadets have been taking extra courses through the Selkirk College Aviation Department. The next step for the cadets will be a formal interview conducted by members of the BC Provincial Committee of the Air Cadet League Canada and the Canadian Forces. If selected for the scholarship, the cadets will attend a six-week course at CFB Comox. If selected for the Power Flying Scholarship the cadets will attend a seven-week course at one of several locations in BC. Approximately 80 cadets from BC will receive either their glider or powered civilian pilot licenses in the summer of 2015. Locally, there are air cadet squadrons in Trail, Nelson, Castlegar and Grand Forks. The scholarships are funded by the British Columbia Provincial Committee of the Air Cadet League Canada and the training is provided by the Canadian Forces. The air cadet flying scholarship program has graduated some notable Canadians such as astronauts Chris Hadfield and Jeremy
Hansen and several members of the military performance flying team, the Snowbirds, including Maryse Carmichael, their first female commanding officer. The Air Cadet League of Canada, BC committee owns a fleet of 14 Schweitzer 2-33 gliders and six Cessna 182 tow planes which they use to facilitate familiarization flights for cadets across the province. HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.
“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

News Selkirk College vice president receives leadership award Selkirk College vice president of education and students Neil Coburn has been recognized for his commitment to strengthening transfer agreements and enabling student mobility in postsecondary institutions across the province. Coburn was presented the leadership award from the British Columbia Council on Admissions and Transfer at the organization’s inaugural awards event late last year. Coburn was singled out for his work to further the goals of the BC transfer system and promote the mobility of students across the province. “It’s an honour and very humbling,” Coburn says of the award. “There are hundreds of people who have spent decades working on the BC transfer system to make it what it is, to be recognized for leadership is pretty special.” Established in 1989, the transfer system oversees the BC transfer system, enabling important links between the BC post-secondary institutions. transfer system facilitates admission, articulation and transfer agreements among BC postsecondary institutions for the benefit of students. A Vital Part of a PostSecondary Education Coburn started teaching at Selkirk College in 1997, first in computer science and then mathematics. He started working on transfer agreements as a member of the transfer system math articulation committee, one of more than 60 committees in the province that work on creating transfer pathways for students. “Transferability is important for Selkirk College,” says Coburn, who became a department head and dean before being appointed college vice president in 2011. “Students need a broad range of educational opportunities and as a small institution we can’t offer them everything. It’s important that students are able to start something at Selkirk College and then successfully move some-
where else so they can access the programs they want.” Every course in the school of university arts and sciences is articulated, enabling those who start at Selkirk College to seamlessly carry forward their educational goals at schools like the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria as well as many others.

It’s important that students are able to start something at Selkirk College and then successfully move somewhere else so they can access the programs they want. Over the last 15 years, block transfer agreements have also been a main focus of transfer system and have been highly beneficial to Selkirk College students. Block transfers enable graduates of two-year Selkirk College diploma programs, like resort and hotel management, to move into the third year of study in degree programs at other institutions. “The block transfers have become more important because degrees have become more important in employment than they were 20 years ago,” says Coburn, adding that every diploma program at Selkirk College has block transfer opportunities. “If you want to advance in your chosen career, you typically need a degree.

After completing a diploma program at Selkirk College, graduates can move directly into continuing their education or they can work for a few years and then return to finish off a degree.” A System that Works Coburn was appointed by the Minister of Advanced Education to the British Columbia Council on Admissions and Transfer in 2008 where he has helped guide the work of the organization. Last year Coburn completed his second term, the maximum allowed. While working with the Council on continually enhancing the system for all of British Columbia over the last six years, Coburn has in turn helped students in the region bolster their educational opportunities. “Selkirk College benefits because if we have good pathways that means students can start here and go somewhere else,” says Coburn. “The way to make that work is to make
mobility easy and one of the mechanisms to make that easy is a good transfer system. The BC system is probably the envy of every other jurisdiction in North America.” In total there are more than 80,000 course transfers in British Columbia and all can be found on the transfer system website (transfer system.ca). Mapping out pathways for students can be done with the assistance of Selkirk College counsellors who can help connect the dots. “I’m not sure if people realize the extent and the effectiveness of the transfer system in BC,” says Coburn. “We can help students learn about where they want to go because you don’t always know that when you start out. If you don’t know what pathway to take, or even if you do, it’s much less expensive to get a start here rather than going off to a bigger city.” Find out more about Selkirk College programs and course selection at selkirk.ca.

Putting your truck on the level installer-friendly kits available and the manufacturer utilizes the best materials – billet aircraft aluminum (higher grade of aluminum with no imperfections), powder coated cast aluminum, and specialty polyurethane, which meet or exceed originalequipment specifications. Whether you choose a complete lift, or just to level the front end, Revtek likely has a solution for many of today’s most popular vehicles. Check out www.revtek. com.
Suspension upgrades and improvements are becoming tougher and tougher to manufacture. The days when you could throw away your stock leaf-springs and stick in the largest leaf-spring you could find are over. Now you have to worry more about steering geometry and wheel-alignment specs. Revtek offers a complete line of suspension systems designed to level your vehicle, and offer you the option to increase tire size. Most levelling systems maintain the original springs, so you can maintain a smooth ride. In my view, Revtek has the most

Your new truck looks great in front of your home, but why does the front sit lower than the back? If you find yourself pondering this question, you are not alone. This “feature” is very common with the trucks of today, but there is a solution to this problem. Revtek Industries was founded in 2000 to market unique Toyota suspension lift systems, but since those early days, the company has gone on to develop systems for the Ford Super-duty truck, the Ford F150’s, Ram, Jeep, Nissan Titan and the Toyota Tundra.

Your truck on the level continued from page A10
‘‘
You can raise your truck a few inches or all the way up to nosebleed levels.
’’
Ian Harwood
If you are not happy with the overall ride height and not satisfied with just levelling the front-end then Pro Comp Suspension may be an alternative. It has a full line of suspension lifts: you can raise your truck a few inches or all the way up to nosebleed levels. One kit in particular is the 8.5-inch for Ford Super Duty trucks. This lift has enough clearance to clear 37-inch tires, and will cost you $2,400 with shocks.
With lift kits of this size, you should definitely make sure you make any necessary improvements such as a spacer kit to lower the carrier bearing on vehicles with two piece driveshafts. This will reduce high-speed driveshaft vibrations, and is well worth the investment of $60. You should also consider a steering stabilizer to control those large tires bouncing down the road.
There are a few options available from a single application or a double stabilizer setup, depending on the vehicle. Price $89 to $165. Another good upgrade to consider with a lift of this size is a traction bar system to prevent wheel hop or axle wind up. In the old days, these bars would limit your wheel travel, but now the ends are equipped with reverse hourglassshaped urethane bushings
www.spca.bc.ca
“Let me be the princess of your heart.”
that allow the traction bar to flex for articulation. The final upgrade to consider is the addition of stainless steel brake lines. Such brake lines not only give you the correct length required with these massive lifts, but also will not swell under increased braking pressure demanded by larger tires. Not the Volvo your parents remember
By Alexandra Straub
There are a few schools of thought when it comes to writing down your to-do lists. One argument says that writing lists causes the brain to get lazy; therefore, it doesn’t retain information as easily because it knows there is a backup somewhere. Another suggests that highly effective people write lists because when they scratch their tasks off, it creates positive reinforcement and motivates individuals to continue to work hard. Call my brain lazy but I love writing lists. It seemed only natural to have such a list
while the Volvo’s performance version of V60 sportwagon was in my garage. The V60 Polestar is evocative, sexy, incredibly agile and designed to satisfy with every ride. Yes, this is a Volvo. Those not familiar with the tuning division of Volvo, their roots go back to 1996 when they started working with the Swedish brand in regards to motorsports. Since then, they’ve helped develop not only track-worthy competitors, but also street cars. Clad in a Rebel Blue robe, our time together would not be for eternity, but the memory will recall the experience without need of a list!
Here are just a few things that I felt inspired to do with the 345 horsepower V60. 1) Have fun. 2) Find some snow and play in it. 3) Paint my toenails the same colour as its exterior. You know, because it’s what all the cool kids are doing. 4) Impress first-time Volvo passengers with its competency. 5) Make a Polestar joke (or many) and see how many people laugh at my sharp wit. 6) Make use of its 692L cargo capacity. 7) Accelerate quickly. Make someone’s day. continued on page A11

Not the Volvo your parents remember And the list could go on . . . The Lower Mainland doesn’t experience the wrath of winter as other parts of Canada do. Regardless, this V60 warmed up in a flash. Minutes into my drive the heated seats in full swing, the heated steering wheel toasting my fingers, and the hot air blowing out of the vents. The Swedes know cold and how to keep it outside. The car’s handling prowess can be attributed to its front and rear Öhlins Shock Absorbers, MacPherson front and multilink independent rear suspension. This V60 gives you the confidence you’d like in turns while having a blast and making sure occupants are comfortable. As for playing in the slippery and the snow, count on Volvo’s Haladex Four-Wheel Drive

System to distribute power to the wheels that are in need of it the most. Add in razor-sharp steering and running errands just doesn’t feel like a chore anymore. Then there’s what really gets the party started. Under its hood is a 3.0L, turbocharged T6 engine that produces the aforementioned 345 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Torque is harnessed as low as 2,800 rpm and then delivered via a 6-speed automatic transmission. Paddle shifters also come as standard equipment. If there were to be more of a kick while accelerating quickly, that would be welcome, but not necessary. Speaking of acceleration, getting up to 100km/h from zero takes a mere 4.9 seconds. Getting you back to zero is made pos-
sible by using Polestar’s 14.6-inch ventilated front discs matched with six-piston Brembo calipers with 11.8-inch ventilated discs in the rear. The only real drawback of the Polestar, I found, was its turning radius. Tight turns at low speeds wasn’t ideal, but if you need to a three or four-point turn to get into the mall’s cramped parking stalls, so be it. At the end of our test time together, I’m happy to report that I checked off all the items on the list. If the universe unfolds in my favour, we shall meet again. The Volvo V60 Polestar is available in limited quantities and has an MSRP of $66,895. Visit www.volvocars.ca for more information. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Pick of the Week: Smartwatch steers autonomous drive Audi The Audi Prologue concept was summoned to its display position at the recent CES electronics show in Las Vegas by an LG smartwatch! Powered by a 4-litre TFSI engine, merged with an electric motor, the hybrid system produces a stunning total output of 690 hp. Piloted driving is what Audi brings to the table of autonomous vehicles, and it’s determined to put the system in vehicles like the Q7 as early as the end of this year. The system will be available to take over for drivers in an autopilot like mode, allowing the driver to redirect their attention. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Eighty-third in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Nearly 130 years after the infamous Bluebell murder on Kootenay Lake, what new information could possibly come to light? Castlegar author/historian Sam McBride recently noticed several things that have eluded everyone else. Recently in this series, we looked at the naming of Gray Creek. There are two candidates for its namesake: prospector/rancher Alden Samuel Gray (1849-1942) and surveyor/ engineer John Hamilton Gray (1853-1941). The latter’s father, also named John Hamilton Gray, was the second premier of New Brunswick prior to confederation, as well as a judge. By strange coincidence, he was one of two unrelated Fathers of Confederation named John Hamilton Gray. The other was premier of Prince Edward Island when the Charlottetown Conference that led to Canada’s birth was held in 1864. He was also McBride’s great great grandfather. McBride notes both were often referred to as Colonel Gray — the PEI Gray because he was a retired officer with the British Dragoon Guards, and the New Brunswick Gray because he held the rank of lieutenant-colonel with the New Brunswick militia. Both were also strong supporters of confederation. The New Brunswick Gray moved to Victoria 1872 when he was named a judge of the Supreme Court of BC, a position he held until his death in 1889. His appointment was criticized by many, including chief justice Matthew Begbie, who felt another judge was not needed. According to historian Margaret Ormsby, the judgeship may have been a consolation prize after Gray was passed over for speaker of the House of Commons. His grave is in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria, making him the only Father of Confederation buried west of Ontario. It’s not well known that Gray was the presiding judge when Robert Sproule was tried in Victoria for the murder of Thomas Hammill, who was shot and killed near present-day Riondel in 1885. Although there were no witnesses to the crime, Sproule
The two Fathers of Confederation named John Hamilton Gray appear in a recently-unveiled sculpture in downtown Charlottetown. The New Brunswick Gray, on the left, presided over the trial of Robert Sproule, who was accused of murdering Thomas Hammill on Kootenay Lake in 1885. Gray’s son later worked in West Kootenay as a surveyor and engineer. The Prince Edward Island Gray, on the right, was the great great grandfather of Castlegar’s Sam McBride. Sam McBride photo was the prime suspect because Hammill jumped his claim to the Bluebell mine. Immediately after Hammill’s death, a posse captured Sproule as he rowed south on Kootenay Lake for the US border, despite a head start of several hours. A jury convicted Sproule of murder and Judge Gray — whose questionable advice seemed to ensure the guilty verdict — sentenced him to hang. “One of the criticisms of Judge Gray is that he seemed overly interested in the details of Sproule’s capture,” McBride says, “perhaps thinking it was destiny or God’s will that Sproule be caught, which made him more guilty in the eyes of the judge.” Following several reprieves, Sproule was executed in Victoria, the likely victim of a miscarriage of justice.
Judge Gray’s son came to West Kootenay in the early 1890s. He laid out the Kuskonook and Whitewater townsites plus an addition to Sandon, and was for a time chief engineer of the Kaslo and Slocan Railway. McBride may be the first to draw the connection to his father’s involvement in the Bluebell case. In September, McBride attended a reunion of descendants of Prince Edward Island Fathers of Confederation, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference. The provincial government had just unveiled a life-size outdoor sculpture of a scene between the two John Hamilton Grays. As McBride puts it: “So the judge who hanged Robert Sproule is now featured in a tourist attraction in downtown Charlottetown!”
