Target opened November 2013 in Ridge.

Target quits Canada Sudden announcement catches many by surprise By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

Tim Fitzgerald/THE NEWS

Travellers at Haney Place bus exchange in Maple Ridge didn’t have many good things to say about possible half-per-cent hike in sales tax.

Maple Ridge’s downtown will have another empty space to fill after Target clears out of Haney Place Mall, just more than a year after opening. The U.S. retail giant announced Thursday it’s shutting down all its 133 Canadian stores, including the Maple Ridge location, which opened in November 2013. “It’s terrible, and it’ll definitely leave a big hole in our downtown core, said Ineke Boekhorst, executive-director of the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association. The U.S.-based retailer was granted protection from its creditors in Ontario Supreme Court under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act. Target chairman CEO Brian Cornell said there was no realistic scenario to reach profitability in Canada until 2021. “We had great expectations for Canada but our early missteps proved too difficult to overcome, Cornell said. “Personally, this was a very difficult decision, but it was the right decision for our company. See Target, 5

Rough ride for TLink vote Mayor wants TransLink to sweeten the deal B y P h i l M e l nychuk pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

The future of Maple Ridge’s transit lies in the hands of Canada Post. The number of mail-in ballots marked either yes or no carried by posties in the mail-in referendum on the half-percent sales tax hike will determine if Maple Ridge gets a fast bus to Coquitlam – or if a light rail transit system is built in Langley or SkyTrain is extended in Vancouver. But if the referendum is going to get support locally, there has to be

more for Maple Ridge, says the mayor. Nicole Read said at Tuesday’s council meeting broadcast online that there isn’t enough for this area in the list of transportation priorities that will be funded by the tax hike. City staff recently Read met with TransLink to see how support can be built in Maple Ridge for the mailin vote that takes place between March 16 and May 29. “We feel right now there’s not enough in the plan to justify the increase, not enough trust there. There are some things that Maple Ridge would need to see in order for the proposal to be sold

in Maple Ridge, she added. In December, Read was one of three Metro Vancouver mayors who voted against the tax increase as a fundraising measure because she said mayors don’t have enough say in how TransLink is run. Along with West Vancouver Mayor Michael Smith and Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan, Read voted against the proposal to raise the provincial sales tax in Metro Vancouver from seven to 7.5 per cent. The Mayors Council on Regional Transportation came up with the fundraising idea after the provincial government decided that

any funding increase for TransLink must be approved in a referendum. Read said she’ll listen to what TransLink has to say when it talks to council in the next few weeks. The referendum, which will be officially called the Metro Vancouver Transportation and Transit Plebiscite, is coupled with a list of transportation priorities for Metro Vancouver that includes improvements to West Coast Express service. An additional morning train, and more cars are also planned. Judging by the reaction from commuters, the TransLink funding referendum is in for a rough ride. See TransLink,8

Maple Ridge entrepreneur Jack Gardner has developed Cab Share Canada to make it easier for passengers to share trips and dollars when they grab a cab.

Tim Fitzgerald/THE NEWS

Jack has an app for that . . . Garibaldi graduate markets program for sharing taxi cabs By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

H

e’s not Bill Gates yet – or even Jimmy Pattison – but with two business startups by the age of 19, Garibaldi secondary grad Jack Gardner is headed down the same entrepreneurial road. Gardner is one of the young businessmen behind a smartphone application that helps taxi passengers share a ride. He also has a business that monitors the dust levels in sawmills, taking advantage of an opportunity created when Worksafe BC insisted on third-party monitoring of dust in mills which has caused explosions and fires in recent years. Gardner is marketing the taxi app, Cab Share Canada, with two friends who developed the program. Cab Share Canada started as an idea by Coquitlam student Shehan Wijeyagoonewardane, who attends school at the University of Western Ontario in London. Wijeyagoonewardane noticed that traveling students were contacting one another on social media to share cabs, and that sparked the idea of making the task more efficient by

using a dedicated cellphone app. Users type in where they are, where they are going and other data. Then, an algorithm pairs them with other cab riders. They can chat on the app to arrange a meeting place, and the app also lists the five closest cab companies so the user can call one nearby. The idea has gotten some press. Cab Share Canada is often described as being similar to the controversial Uber, but Gardner bristles at the comparison. Both services are designed to save consumers money on their travel costs. However, while their app allows people to split a cab fare, with Uber “you or me can basically become a cab driver,” he said, by offering a ride in exchange for cash. “We’re not even close to Uber.” Vancouver cab companies don’t like the competition that Uber would bring, have lobbied against it, and the service has so far been banned in the province. That hasn’t been the experience for Gardner’s group. Gardner said the new app helps people do something they already do – share a cab. Although cab companies might lose a few fares, there is an easy argument that more people will use cabs if it is made more affordable by cab sharing. He had a friend who recently caught a cab from Port Coquitlam to the Vancouver International Airport, and the bill was $150.

“We’re not even close to Uber.” Jack Gardner, – Cab Share Canada

So obviously there could be significant savings by cutting that ride in half. Detractors of Uber often cite safety concerns – you’re hitching a ride with someone you don’t know, who is not licensed in any way. So safety is something that the young app developers of Cab Share Canada have put a lot of energy into. For one, people can specify the sex of the person they will share a cab with. “So if you’re a girl who wants to ride with another girl, you can.” The app also gives users safety advice, such as making sure they meet in a public place, and not telling their cab sharer where they will be going after they get dropped off. The app is sold for free, and the developers expect to make their money by advertising. They will need thousands of people to

download the app, to make the business a success. They have been accepted to receive $20,000 worth of online services, after applying to a program called Facebook Start that assists online business startups. They have an iOS version, but are still working on an Android version of the app. They are getting the word out using Facebook, Bing and other online sites. It’s starting slowly, but don’t have any competition, said Gardner. He comes by his business acumen honestly. His grandfather Dick Jones is an owner of the Teal-Jones Group, a forestry company based in Port Kells, and he went to work in a mill at the age of 11, first cleaning up the place, then piling shingles, sorting lumber on the green chain, and even doing a little payroll. It gave him an appreciation of the forestry business. His future is in commerce. “I want to own my own business, and hopefully become successful,” he said. Gardner is in his second year of business studies at Douglas, and plans to transfer to a B.C. university for the final two years of his degree. After grad, he will likely continue down one of the paths he has started, finding both forestry and the tech sectors interesting. “I’m only 19, so I’ve got some time to figure it out.”

Target closing its doors Target from Front

Target employs 17,600 people across Canada, with about 120 in Maple Ridge. According to a local Target employee who wished to remain anonymous, workers had been told just two days earlier that the store would not be closing. They first learned about Target’s retreat from Canada through the media. “That’s something we sympathize with,” said Coun. Bob Masse of the layoffs. “That’s not the way you want to start your new year.” Target also got court approval to voluntarily place $70 million in an employee trust to “ensure fair treatment of Target Canada employees.” That will ensure a minimum 16 weeks compensation, including wage and benefit coverage for workers not needed for the full wind-down period. Target gave the former Zellers building an $11-million renovation. That should make the building easier to fill. “They spruced it up quite a bit,” said Boekhorst. “Hopefully somebody else can benefit from that, and will snap it up.” Clayton Ansdell stopped by Target on Thursday and had no idea the chain was closing. He said he was initially excited

Tim Fitzgerald/THE NEWS

Clayton Ansdell just heard of closing. when he heard Target was coming to Canada. “I used to stop at the store in Bellingham when I would cross the border. I liked it over there, especially the prices, but this one obviously wasn’t the same,” said Ansdell. Like many, he said selection was one of the factors that kept him from frequenting the store regularly. Price also played a part. “I’m a single dad with two kids, so I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do. I’m a flyer shopper. If there’s a good deal somewhere else, that’s

where I’m going.” Masse said city hall will do what it can, along with the mall owners, to attract a new retailer. “That’s going to happen – that’s not going to sit as an empty space,” he assured. “That mall’s an important piece of our downtown, and downtown is the heart of the community.” Chris Sherry, with Narland, the Vancouver company that owns the Haney Place Mall, said finding a new tenant is a top priority. He also learned about the Target closures in the media. “It is with great disappointment that we learn of this announcement, primarily for the many employees that will be affected,” said Sherry. “Locally speaking, Narland worked effectively together with the District of Maple Ridge to attract Target to Haney Place Mall. Both Narland and Target have made considerable capital investments into the Mall, which will assist tremendously in attracting a replacement anchor tenant,” he added. “Narland’s management team will be working to execute a plan to backfill the premises at the earliest opportunity.”

Target couldn’t meet targets

T

he retail world was rocked Thursday morning by the blockbuster news that Target has had enough with Canada. The U.S. retail giant announced it’s closing its 133 stores here, barely two years after opening them after renovating the tired old Zellers stores. Sadly, Target just couldn’t make a go of it in the great white north and to read its press release, the closures will happen as soon as possible as the company enters bankruptcy protection for its Canadian operations. The reasons could be numerous but if you operate a stellar chain in your home country that draws Canadians to cross the line, you’d better do the same here. For whatever reason, Target couldn’t do that and shoppers voted with their feet. It’s too bad because the company could have been a worthy presence on the retail scene. It’s care for its employees is one sign of that. While it’s in the process of closing, Target is ensuring employees who aren’t needed for the wind-down, get at least 16 weeks salary severance. The offer is a humanitarian one that shows the company’s heart is in the right place. It’s too bad the cash flow wasn’t. With the closure, 133 prime retail anchor spots, such as Haney Place Mall in Maple Ridge, are now open. Will they sit empty or will the shiny new buildings be scooped up, possibly by another retail giant? Does Wal-Mart move in to downtown Maple Ridge and end the debate about Albion flats? Stay tuned, the retail world is still rocking. – The News

Our disappearing countryside I really don’t know too much about Nicole Read, Maple Ridge’s new mayor, but I do know one thing about her husband, Steve Read. He is one hell of a photographer. I have been avidly following on Facebook his photographic Sidewinder postings of old barns Sandy Macdougall and other fast disappearing Maple Ridge rural countryside features. I’m not sure of his goal in this nostalgic photographic journey, but the end result is enjoyable, praiseworthy and deserves to be seen on a much broader basis than social media; perhaps as an exhibit at the ACT art gallery. The poignant thing about many of Read’s photos is how deeply they emphasize Maple Ridge’s demise as a rural, pastoral paradise. The destructive nature of urban sprawl began decades ago and is now fully evident as small family farms give way to single family small lot residential subdivisions. The open fields, big old farmhouses, cow barns and small garden plots that once dominated Maple Ridge’s rural landscape, have been supplanted by scattered, poorly planned and even more

Q

uestion of the week:

poorly serviced subdivisions. Some folks think it’s merely evidence that Maple Ridge is growing up. Indeed, we are now a city, but I’m not sure that’s a good thing. Is our destiny to become a scattered collection of subdivisions separated only by those lands that are not suitable for development? Not that many years ago there were dozens of small farms in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. They shipped milk to the Fraser Valley Milk Producers Association plant on the Lougheed Highway in Burnaby. It would be more familiar by its popular name, Dairyland. Today, only a tiny fraction of those local milk producers remain in production and the old milk cans in which the milk was shipped have become collectible antiques. Nowadays, huge tanker trucks collect the milk. As the number of viable farms in Maple Ridge diminishes, the array of items Read can photograph increases. The wonderful images he has captured will soon be all that remains of that comfortable past, when it was possible to raise a family and grow all they needed to sustain a satisfactory lifestyle on a few acres. Much of the land has become far too valuable to maintain as small farms. Other economic factors, such as prohibitively high municipal taxes, frequently leave most rural property owners with very little choice but to take the money

Are you disappointed that the Albion flats land swap fell through? Yes: 46% – No: 54%

and leave behind a lifestyle they will never be able to replicate on a small lot in the sprawling suburbs. If you think I’m exaggerating when I refer to prohibitively high municipal taxes, you should understand that many people who live in middle class homes on four or five acres are probably paying more than $5,000 per year in property taxes. That amount quickly becomes unaffordable for retired people or those living on a fixed income. Official community plans became compulsory in the 1970s and 1980s. These gross documents were supposed to provide a guide for the orderly development of our community, but in Maple Ridge’s case, that noble experiment has been a colossal failure. There has been a terrible lack of vision in the unfolding and everchanging drama of the official community plan. I simply cannot believe that any municipal council would have approved of the plans if they could have foreseen the results. The one certain thing is that no council has a mandate to rezone and subdivide every piece of land from the Golden Ears mountains to the Fraser River. Maybe we should slow down a little and allow Read time to capture more of what is disappearing before it’s all gone. Sandy Macdougall is a retired journalist and former district councillor.

THE NEWS/letters Talking and doing

Editor, The News: Re: Closing safe house not option (Letters, Jan. 7). The position of our elected representatives on homelessness and youth services is very disheartening. Talking and doing are two entirely different things. There is a lack of youth services in this area now and to see an asset like Iron Horse close is unbelievable. MP Randy Kamp’s position is typical of the current federal government. There is money for lakes, helicopter rides and military celebrations, but not for people in need or veterans. I don’t know if the hostel is run on an efficient basis, but I’m sure it is more effective than most government operations. If it is closed, I will offer my services to defeat Mr. Kamp in the upcoming election. Rod McIntyre Maple Ridge

‘No funds available for safe house’ Editor, The News: Re: Closing safe house not option (Letters, Jan. 7). While I appreciate Todd Oliver’s perspective on the future of the Iron Horse Youth Safe House, based on his considerable experience as a correctional officer, I think some clarification is required. First, the provincial government has primary responsibility for the safety of children and youth, as well as for the network of shelters in B.C. I’ll leave it to my provincial colleagues to explain the Ministry of Children and Families’ preference to use foster homes rather than safe houses for younger teens. Second, our federal government is still committed to addressing homelessness across Canada. We launched the Homelessness Partnering Strategy in 2007 and in the first five years made some significant progress sheltering, housing, and training needy Canadians. In fact, since 2007, the Alouette Home Start Society has received about $3.5 million under the HPS – most of it for the Iron Horse Youth Safe House. Building on this success, budget 2013 announced a second five-year phase of the HPS: $119 million per year from April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2019. While the previous strategy focused more on short-term responses, it was our government’s view that there was room for improvement when it came to helping chronically homeless individuals. That’s why we’re adopting a Housing First approach: moving homeless people from the streets

and short-term shelters into stable housing, where the focus then shifts to connecting them with supports that meet their individual needs, such as addictions or mental health issues. Based on the evidence we’ve seen, we’re convinced that Housing First is the most effective way to address chronic and episodic homelessness. It’s important to note, however, that communities still retain the flexibility to invest up to 35 per cent of the available funds in non-Housing First projects, such as shelters and transition houses. Third, HPS is a community-based program. Sixty-one designated communities (and some northern and Aboriginal communities) that have a significant problem with homelessness receive funding to develop local solutions. For example, in the Lower Mainland, Metro Vancouver will receive about $41 million in funding under the HPS from 2014 to 2019. As the community entity, Metro Vancouver manages a community planning process involving a community advisory board composed of officials from all levels of government, community stakeholders, and the private and voluntary sectors. After a regional plan is developed, Metro Vancouver receives HPS funds and all funding decisions from that point on are not made by federal politicians. Fourth, all proponents and stakeholders, including AHSS, were advised almost two years ago that a change in focus was coming. In fact, it’s my understanding that proponents were advised as early

Great Movies at

The ACT

as 2011 that they needed to develop a sustainability plan. Although the Housing First approach was scheduled to be phased in beginning in April 2014, that was delayed while Metro Vancouver developed a plan and ran a call for proposals for both Housing First and non-Housing First projects to start in 2015. During the transition period from April 1 to Dec. 31, IHYSH received $276,000 to allow it to continue to operate. The call for proposals closed on Sept. 5, but it has been reported elsewhere that AHSS did not apply for funding for their Iron Horse project (although they did submit an unsuccessful application for a different youth-related project). I understand their reasons for not doing so, but the only way to receive HPS funding is to apply. Although it is true that there was considerable competition for the limited funds available for non-Housing First projects, I think it can be argued that a compelling case could have been made for a proposal incorporating a modified delivery model and other funding partners, such as the province and the city. Finally, while there currently are no federal funds available to the Iron Horse for the reasons outlined above, I’m hopeful that other sources can be found to allow it to provide essential services until a new application can be submitted at the next call for proposals in 2016. Riders don’t like tax hike

At the Haney Place bus exchange Wednesday, community shuttle rider Dolores Novak said increasing the sales tax is ridiculous. She’ll vote no in March. “They have not increased disability (income assistance) in 15 years and they have the nerve to ask for .5 per cent extra? They’re delusional. “It’s ridiculous.” Allan Wolsteiner, from Maple Ridge, will do the same. “I think it sucks,” he said about the idea of raising the sales tax. “We’re already paying through the nose.” He added that if TransLink can afford to put SkyTrain all over Vancouver and Surrey,

“put one out here.” Brittany Girard, from Maple Ridge, said she’ll probably vote no, “although half a per cent is not that Wolsteiner much. “I always like to vote to get my vote in there. I would rather it not go up. “It would be nice to have a SkyTrain out here but I know they’ll be putting one in Coquitlam so that will be good too.” Pitt Meadows bus rider Evan Schafer was just about to jump on the No. 701 and wanted to see more bus service in Maple Ridge-Pitt

Meadows and Coquitlam. If the sales tax is increased, he wants to make sure it goes for the intended purposes. The ballots will be mailed to voters on March 16, and the voting will conclude on May 29. A vote of 51 per cent or better will constitute support for what is called the Metro Vancouver Congestion Improvement Tax. TransLink’s auditor will also ensure the funding is alloted to the projects. Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore a key voice for the Mayor’s Council on Regional Transportation, recently explained the vote to

Pitt Meadows council. Moore said communities from Coquitlam to Maple Ridge will get their improvements first because it’s easier to roll out bus service first. “We’ll see the most impact, almost immediately.” He said two new Bline buses will connect Coquitlam Centre to both downtown Maple Ridge and downtown Langley, via the Golden Ears Bridge. These buses have limited stops, greater capacity, have their own lane, can go through red lights, and are touted by TransLink as being faster than driving. “It’s frequent, it’s fast, it’s convenient,” Moore said. “It’s almost as good a service as light rail.”

Three new off-leash areas Tolmie, Westview and Upper MacLure parks get freerun locations By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews. com

Dog lovers will have three more parks to let Rover and Fido run around to their hearts’ content after the parks and leisure services commission OK’d three new off-leash areas for Maple Ridge. Upper Maple Ridge Park, Tolmie Park and Westview Park all will have areas fenced off so people can let their dogs off their leashes to run around. Coun. Kiersten Duncan, also on the parks and leisure services commission, announced the locations at Tuesday’s council meeting broadcast online. “This is a bit of a challenge because unfortunately we’re working with park space that’s been utilized by the community for a number of years. “We’re just in a situation where dog parks are necessary. People need dog parks but unfortunately we have to go into existing parks and create them.” Maple Ridge has been seeking more off-leash areas after it had to abandon an off-leash area in Volker Park on 123rd Avenue last summer because of complaints from the neighbours. But the new parks won’t come with the convenience of doggy bags, used to dispose of the dog waste. Duncan said the doggy-do disposal bags just cost the department too much, about $27,000 a year. People steal them outright and don’t properly dispose of them. During the surveys, most people supported the idea that dog owners have to bring their own bags. “The responsibility is the dog owner’s to bring their own bag and clean up.” Hammond resident Eric Phillips though already had a problem

with putting an off-leash area in Tolmie Park. The Tolmie family gave it to the city for use by families and kids, Phillips told council during question period. Phillips said most people wanted a dog park to go under the Golden Ears Bridge. “Most people I talk to in lower Hammond are not interested in having a dog park in Tolmie Park just because of the use it has now with the kids and the ball diamond and small children.” He asked Duncan to ask the parks commission to reconsider. But Read pointed out the dog park was approved and feedback can be given to the commission six months after the parks open. And Duncan said later that the off-leash area will be built with minimal encroachment on to the ball diamond or toboggan hill in Tolmie Park. She emphasize that the commission en-

sured there would be a six-month comment period to get feedback on the new areas. Temporary off-leash areas were established in the parks last summer as a test run and to collect feedback from neighbours. A total of 104 surveys were completed for the Tolmie Park location and showed that 66 per cent of respondants supported an off-leash area. In Westview Park, 80 per cent supported an offleash area and in Upper Maple Ridge Park, 72 per cent supported it. Staff say that the existing off-leash areas are

all well used. New signs have also been posted on the parks to remind dog owners of their responsibilities. Parks and leisure services also will consult with residents on the hours that the parks should be open. Existing off-leash areas in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows are: • Albion Fairgrounds, 105th Avenue, Maple Ridge • Hoffman Park, Advent Road, Pitt Meadows • Jerry Sulina Park, 210th Street, Maple Ridge • North Bonson Park, Blakely Road, Pitt Meadows Leashes are also optional on the dike trail from the Pitt RIver Bridge to the Pitt Meadows Marina, and from the north end of Harris Road. Duncan said a goal is to develop a new policy so off-leash areas are developed when new parks are being planned.

A decision follows in about three months. Dyer said that the summer months aren’t counted, so it should be next fall when a ruling is made. Dyer said the question the Supreme Court will address is whether the judge applied the correct legal principals regarding the fault component? During the accident, a Toyota driven by Hecimovic skidded sideways over a concrete median, flipped and landed on top of the couple’s Suzuki Swift. Hecimovic was driving in the rightturn-only lane when she crossed the intersection of Harris Road and Lougheed Highway on a red light. An expert estimated she hit the concrete median at a speed of

between 100 or 110 km/h. In the initial trial in September 2013, Justice Miriam Gropper ruled that Hecimovic was not trying to beat the red light. Hecimovic told the court she was thinking about her shift and suddenly smelled something odd as she approached the intersection. When she looked at her scrubs she noticed vomit on her shirt and burst into tears. She was trying to wipe the tears off her face and focus on the road when she realized she had run a red light. Gropper found that Hecimovic’s behaviour was not a “marked departure from the norm because many people speed along that stretch of Lougheed Highway.

The case involving Andelina Kristina Hecimovic, acquitted in 2013 of dangerous driving causing the deaths of two Pitt Meadows teens, is going to the Supreme Court of Canada. In December, the B.C. Appeal Court ordered a new trial after the Crown appealed Hecimovic’s acquittal. She was charged after an Oct. 19, 2010 collision on Lougheed Highway at Harris Road, that claimed the lives of Rebecca ‘Beckie’ Dyer, 19, and her boyfriend, Johnny De Oliveira, 21. But because one of three

Appeal Court judges dissented, there was an option to take the issue to the Supreme Court. The justices in the top court in the country then will either uphold the original acquittal – or order that a new trial take place. “I’m not surprised, Becky’s mom, Debbie Dyer, said Monday. “I’m disappointed that she’s chosen to do this. Dyer said the case could start in Ottawa in June, when an appeal date is set, and that both sides have to pick dates that work for their schedules. During the appeal, both sides have an hour to make their case in front of the Supreme Court.

Maple Ridge has at least 10 properties in 2015 valued at more than $1.5 million, including the one above, while Pitt Meadows has eight.

Assessment notices issued Until Feb. 2 to file appeals By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

The assessed value of your house, which sets your property taxes in July, is in the mail. If you disagree with the valuation of your Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows home, you have only til the end of the month to challenge it. “It is very important that property owners open the envelope from B.C. Assessment and carefully review their 2015 Assessment Notice,” Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read said. If the value seems too high or too low, you can appeal the number to B.C. Assessment by Feb. 2. Some residents, though, are probably looking a little more closely at those numbers. Maple Ridge has at least 10 properties in 2015 valued at more than $1.5 million, while Pitt Meadows has eight. According to B.C. Assessment, Maple Ridge’s priciest property, at 24152 – 112th Ave. is worth $5.6 million. However, that property is slated for development. Following for second and third on the list is 13035 Alouette Rd., and 25733 – 116th Ave., both assessed at about $2 million. Close behind, valued at $1.9 million, is a

house at 26060 – 124th Ave., while a property at 20208 McIvor Ave., also valued at $1.9 million and slated for redevelopment, rings in at fifth. The following properties make up the rest of the Top 10 properties in Maple Ridge: • 25123 – 112th Ave. – $1.8 M (also likely for development); • 20252 – Patterson Ave. – $1.8 M; • 25817 Dewdney Trunk Rd. – $1.8 M: • 21808 River Rd. – $1.8 M; • 26417– 103rd Ave. – $1.8 M. In Pitt Meadows, the top property is worth $5.6 M and is located at

14975 Patrick Rd. The second-most valuable property is worth $2.4 M and is located at 19611 Richardson Rd. – with the third and fourth also on Richardson Road, No. 19894, and 19459 valued at $1.8 million each. The top two properties in Pitt Meadows are the only two from the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows area to get on to B.C. Assessment’s Top 100 residential properties in the Fraser Valley. Most of the Fraser Valley’s most expensive properties are in Langley, with the top property at 19683 0 Ave.,

valued at $8.7 M. The remaining of the Top 10 properties in Pitt Meadows: • 18740 Old Dewdney Trunk Rd. – $1.8 M; • 19462 Fenton Rd. – $1.6 M; • 19629 McNeil Rd. – $1.6 M; • 19981 Richardson Rd. – $1.6 M; • 20289 Menzies Rd. – $1.37 M; • 20277 Mountain Place – $1.36 M. This will not be the choice of traditional luxury buyers; they will like the more upscale 300C for grand touring. Verdict Starting at $37,395 and maxing out at $45,295 for an AWD platinum V6 model, there are many trims to choose (V8 equipped cars run roughly $2,000 more). The base is the value leader, the S is the sporty model, with standard 20-inch wheels, and the 300C Platinum is the one featuring the opulent interior. Chrysler believes that the S model will be the volume leader thanks to the aggressive black trim and chunky wheels. This is a surprise because the Dodge Charger is based on the same platform and has the whole “bad boy” attitude in spades, something the 300 looks to be mimicking. The top Platinum would be my choice because it’s interior is so different from the Dodge, something that truly separates the two cars plus it has all the latest safety features including the autonomous braking system when a crash is detected. Much has changed in 10 years for the 300 but the same goodness that was in the 2005 model is still here; it is the refinement that makes this a modern sedan. Cold day. Hot bike. By Alexandra Straub Palm Springs, Ca. – Ask any Ducati owner why they bought their bike and, chances are, they won’t say it’s because they got a great deal. They probably won’t even say it’s because they wanted something sexy and Italian.

It could be because they wanted a state-of-the-art electronics system on an extremely competent road and track-ready motorcycle. Maybe they wanted to experience a piece of the Bologna-based bike brand’s racing pedigree or maybe even because they’re just plain cool. I’d say those are good reasons, but one reason may trump the aforementioned few. Ducati isn’t merely a brand, it’s a lifestyle. That’s not a new concept for the motorcycle industry. I can name a certain Amer-

ican motorcycle maker that has this notion nailed down better than a floorboard to a joist. Harley-Davidson, of course. Then again, so does Ducati. In a different way. Push the T-shirts, hats, and baby onesies aside and you have a following that grows stronger by the day. And by each bike they introduce. Enter the 2015 Ducati Scrambler. While it might not have all the electronics the Ducatis have become accustomed to, or the beautiful bodywork that makes jaws drop, it has

a cool factor that compensates for it. With the introduction of this bike – well, technically there are four variations of the Scrambler, but for brevity purposes, I’ll refer to it as one – Ducati is targeting younger riders, or riders who want to experience a bike that serves as a hip and modern motorcycle yet pays homage to the Scramblers of old. The ones from the early 1960s. Fast forward to now. In front of me is one of four models: the Icon. At a starting MSRP of $9,299, it comes clad

The 2015 Ducati Scrambler. in either yellow or red. Other models include Full Throttle ($9,995), the Classic ($10,995) and the Urban Enduro ($10,995.) All Scramblers have identical chassis and engine specs, but styling cues, handlebar configurations, seat covers and a few other aesthetic differentiators distinguish each model. Up front on the Icon you’ve got a 10-spoke alloy wheel with an 18-inch tire and around back, a 17-inch tire. This set of rubbers was developed specifically for the bike with Pirelli and allow some hooliganism to happen both on and off road. But do keep in mind, it’s not designed specifically for offroad use. The Scrambler scrambles to the tune of an air-cooled, L-Twin cylinder, 803cc engine. It’s the same engine that occupied the space of the Monster 796, but has

be detuned for this bike. Though, 75 horsepower and 50 lb-ft of torque is nothing to scoff at, especially if the bike is targeted at those who want to romp the urban streets. Perhaps one of the coolest features of this bike is the underseat storage area with a USB port. While you ride, you can keep your phone charging and out of the way so you’re not distracted. Letting you know what’s going on with the bike is a large, circular, LCD display that’s easy to read and offset to the right. The steel teardrop-shaped tank with interchangeable aluminum side panels holds 13.5L of fuel and the wet weight of the bike tips the scale at 186 kg (410 lb.) With a 790 mm (31.1-inch) seat height and an available as accessory low seat 770 mm (30.3-inch), both its weight and seat height are

welcoming attributes for both seasoned and rookie riders. Atop this sunshine-hued motorcycle, the wide seat is cushy, the handlebars are at a comfortable height and I’m ready to take this Icon for a spin. Engaging the cable-actuated clutch, over time, did give my left hand a good workout. So did shifting through the 6-speed gearbox. After a long, and cold day’s ride, gears started to feel notchy and false neutrals prevailed. You could attribute that to the weather or the fact that the bikes were basically brand new. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying myself. The Scrambler’s strong suit is in its handling. You don’t need to continually adjust it to find an ideal apex on twisty roads and then stay there. Its suspension isn’t jarring, nor does it squirm under slippery situations. Up front, a single 330 mm disc, radial 4-piston caliper with ABS is standard equipment and can bring you to a stop with minimal input. Low-end torque, plus a predictable nature allows you to accelerate quickly but keep a snail’s pace if you’re stuck in stop-and-go traffic. Overall, the Scrambler has a few kinks, but that doesn’t distract me from praising its all-encompassing appeal.

Delta rise offers the urban convenience with great views The Delta area is moving up and quickly being recognized as a desirable place to live – so why not do it in the sky? Picture a curving tower that overlooks sprawling views of the Lower Mainland and you will begin to understand why buyers are excited about Delta Rise by Marshall Mountain Homes and ITC Construction Group. At 37 storeys high, it is the tallest tower in North Delta and offers class, convenience and security in an urban environment. The large decks, expansive outdoor

living spaces and oversized windows capitalize on the use of natural light and an airy, open setting. The decks are two to three times the size of a typical high rise, and although the sizes vary on each unit, the large outdoor space is big enough for homeowners to live the life they want. While inside, the open-concept kitchens come equipped with a stainless steel appliance package and polished quartz countertops, perfect for cooking up a meal and entertaining guests. Each floor plan is designed with

every day needs in mind and come in a variety of configurations in one-, two and three-bedroom plans. Prices start at $204,900 for the one-bedroom, $242,900 for the two-bedroom and the three-bedrooms starting at $412,900, which includes two parking spaces. Beyond the feel of spacious luxury, Principle of OTEZS Project Marketing, Bill Szeto says that Delta Rise offers “lock and go living” that allows homeowners to have a great home, plus safety and security to take vacations without worrying while they are away.

Affordable waterfront living in a vibrant community The name says it all - Riversky homes by Bosa Properties combines affordable waterfront living with breathtaking views. Rising up from the river’s edge are two beautifully designed towers that appear to touch the sky. Located on New Westminster’s Esplanade boardwalk, part of the award winning Westminster Pier Park spanning 2.5 km along the waterfront, the building is surrounded by shops, amenities and magnificent views of the Fraser River. “It’s an amazing waterfront opportunity that is unlike any in Metro Vancouver,” says Marketing Manager, Courtney Osinchuk. “New Westminster’s waterfront is a vibrant, growing community that has easy access to downtown Vancouver, via the SkyTrain, shopping and restaurants at your door step, all of the food experiences and activities at the River Market, as well as amazing city and river views.” The one - two - and threebedroom homes start on the sixth floor and up, allowing for maximum views of the river and sky. Prices for one-bedroom start at $229,900 and the two-bedroom homes start at $339,900. The spacious design allows owners to live bigger and brighter, with features including the ExtenTABLE™, SleepTHEATRE™ and BosaSPACE™ design, perfect for transforming all one-bedroom homes into the ideal space for dining and entertaining purposes. There is also a private fitness centre and rooftop entertainment lounge on site. Combining metropolitan convenience with suburban landscapes, New West is a buzzing community

that is quickly gaining attention as the place to be. It’s home to numerous museums, theatres and facilities, while also catering to the great outdoors, with 48 parks and 141 hectares of green space—including the boardwalk right on your doorstep. “Along the riverfront, the new Westminster Pier Park is invit-

ing and allows you to get close to nature,” says Osinchuk. “You will see families strolling, kids playing, people running along the riverfront.” With Riversky’s outstanding views, enjoy the changing canvas of the sky punctuated by mountains on the horizon, the swiftly flowing water and the lights of the vibrant city shinning below as night falls.

“There is life on the river, but also the sense of calm and relaxation that waterfront living brings,” says Osinchuk. “There is a great community in downtown New Westminster; the historic buildings add character and presence to this growing community. It’s the perfect location; in the city, yet nestled away from the hustle and bustle along the waterfront.”

Dealing with Christmas leftovers By Mike Lascelle

W

ell, I hope you had a good Christmas. As for myself, I have no complaints. I took the time to cut some fresh holly for decorating, went to a theatre screening of It’s a Wonderful Life, ate my fair share of raisin tarts, spent time with family and got a great gift of bobsled lessons at the Whistler Olympic track. Overall, it was a pretty good holiday. But that’s not to say that Christmas can’t be a lot of work and the clean-up is probably the least inspiring part of it – there’s the mountains of boxes and wrapping paper to be recycled, the denuding and chipping of the tree, wine and beer bottles to be returned, and I won’t even start on the leftover food and pastries. But the hardest part for most gardeners is deciding what to do with all those seasonal plants, such poinsettias, Christmas cactus, amaryllis and paperwhites. Somehow it seems wrong to just discard them like most do. So we pull out our green thumbs and decide to nurture them for another 12 months, often with very disappointing results. With this in mind, I thought I’d leave you with a concise, yet simple survival guide for these seasonal flowers; • Paperwhites (Narcissus papyraceus) – Paperwhites, or Tazetta Narcissus, are tender bulbs (Zone 8) native to North Africa and the Mediterranean region. When potted they can be spring-planted outdoors in warmer regions such as the southern U.S., but we don’t have the right light conditions or temperatures here to allow them to re-bloom. Also, those grown on rocks and water (with no soil) expend all their energies blooming and simply collapse after flowering,

Deciding what to do with season plants such as paperwhites and amminerva after the holidays is the difficult part.

so it might be best to consider these as disposable and put them in the compost. • Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) – Start by cutting down faded flower stocks to the base, retaining all the leaves and placing it in the brightest spot you have in the house. Feed monthly while in growth. By late May, you can put it outdoors in the garden for more light. But by late August to early September, the leaves should start yellowing, at which time you stop watering and cut the faded foliage

to two inches. You should then store the pot or bulb in a cool, dark spot for six weeks and then repot it with fresh soil around mid October, bringing it into the house to bloom for Christmas. • Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera) – After flowering, stop fertilizing and water sparingly. Prune in spring and start fertilizing again once the new growth appears – you can also repot at this time, although they don’t mind being rootbound. Put it outside from June to late

Purchasing or Selling a Home?

September in semi-shade and then gradually move inside to a cool, dark room and cut back on watering to force it into dormancy. Keep it there until new flower buds begin to appear. • Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) – After Christmas, give your plants a bright exposure and water whenever the soil surface is dry. In April, move it to a cool location and water sparingly, which will cause the leaves to drop. In May, prune the stems back to about four inches and repot with fresh soil, then

put it in a bright window and fertilize when the new growth appears. Do a little pinching in July to bush it out but by late September to early October it will need its daily dark period (5 p.m. to 8 a.m.), which can end late November. At this time, it can be placed in a well-lit window and, if all goes well, flower buds should develop. Mike Lascelle is a local nursery manager and gardening author (hebe_acer@hotmail.com).

UNDERSTANDING THE WINTER MARKET Q: Should we wait until Spring to list? A: So often at this time of year we hear from clients that they are thinking of

listing but want to wait until Spring. There is no doubt that curb appeal is at its highest once the flowers are up and the sun is out, but if you really want to beat the rest out of the gate, now is the time to list. Buck the mold and get your listing on before the masses do and you may be long gone before their For Sale sign hits the lawn. Typically, there are more buyers than product at this time of year, which gives you the advantage. If you look at last year’s stats you will see that those who were listed in January had approximately 150 fewer competitors than those who waited until April to list. Curb appeal or not, less competitors can often lead to selling quickly and for a great price. Give us a call today to discuss how to get your home show ready and on the market today! Carla and Bob

Texas-sized talent signs scholarship Pitcher Bobbi Berkey going to Blinn College By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

Tim Fitzgerald/THE NEWS

On Thursday, fastball pitcher Bobbi Berkey signed a full-ride scholarship with Blinn College in Texas.

In a small ceremony at the Maple Ridge secondary gymnasium on Thursday afternoon, Bobbi Berkey gathered with her family and her fastball coach, and signed to play ball on scholarship in Texas. The talented pitcher has been hearing from U.S. schools since Grade 10, and she finally chose one – Blinn College in Brenham. Kim Brooks was her coach with the U-18 Pride team. Berkey was one of five girls on the regional team to get a U.S. scholarship, but the only one from the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows area. They put in a lot of hours to make it happen. “What makes her good is her drop ball, and how hard she works,” said Brooks. Brooks says that fall-off-a-table drop ball is the best in B.C. among Berkey’s peers, and she complements it with a 64 mph fastball

and other pitches. Brooks has been her mentor on the mound for the past five years, and Berkey played on her team for the past three. “She’s like my daughter,” said the proud coach. Brooks said Berkey is already at the next level, but expects to see her game take off. “Once she gets there and plays every day, it’ll make a big difference.” There were 10 different schools that gave Berkey scholarship offers. “I started getting attention in Grade 10. I started having bigger schools look at me,” she said. “I always knew I wanted to go to Texas, so when the offer came, I knew I was going.” Part of the attraction was former Canadian national team coach Rick Church, who runs the Buccaneers bench. She knows his pitching philosophy well, because she’s been hearing it for the past five years – Church also coached Brooks during her playing days. See Scholarship, 26
