School troubles surface Alberni Valley News reporter Katya Slepian continues with our year in review of 2014, beginning with the 50th anniversary of the tsunami that hit the city in March.

May Struggling to break even, the Bulldogs asked the city and the regional district for a break in ice rental fees. While they didn’t get all they wanted, they did get a 50 per cent reduction in operating fees from the city and a $25,000 grant from the regional district. Superintendent Cam Pinkerton announced his departure from SD70 this month. The district, which has been plagued by a budget shortfall and school closures, will promote assistant superintendent Greg Smythe to the top job on Aug. 1. Some good news for the struggling school district came in the form of a pilot project at Alberni Elementary. The project introduced tablets as a learning tool for Luke McIvor’s Grade Five class. Outside of SD70, Haa-huu-payak Elementary expanded

from K-6 to K-7 to reflect the anticipated switch in SD70 from a K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 model to a K-7 and 8-12 one. Port Alberni has over twice the teen mothers of the rest of Vancouver Island and over three times what the rest of B.C. does. But while the statistics seem grim, young mothers here go to school and raise their kids, successfully straddling the line between being teenagers and being adults. Many of them go to VAST instead of ADSS, where they’re given support directly tailored to their needs. The community remembered the Komugata Maru on the 100th anniversary of the ship’s arrival in Vancouver. Port Alberni almost had a role to play that could have seen the ship’s 376 passengers allowed to step off the ship onto Canadian soil but plans to get the ship to Alberni instead of Vancouver never came about. Young and old came together in May, as students from ADSS volunteered as candy stripers at Echo Village and Fir Park. This year, the 15 students did

Peter Beyer, a 74-year-old retired marine parts salesman showed off his model train collection. Beyer and his friends have been collecting model trains since they were kids and he had 22 locomotives in his Alberni Valley home. June started off on a sour note with a shooting that resulted in one man seriously injured. Port Alberni 16-yearold Coby Felsman Jr. beat the odds to earn a spot on the North American Indigenous Games as part of the U-16 team. He was one of five Vancouver Island boys to take make the team. June saw the first class graduate from the new ADSS, as the old one was torn down. The library building was the only part of the old school that was left standing.

Our year in review will continue in Thursday’s paper.

SD70 teachers voted to start a full-scale strike and commenced job action mid-month, putting school to and end for the 2013/14 year. Alberni’s waterfront saw the beginnings of a long-term change with the city’s lease of Lots A and B to the Port Authority. While the process was criticized for a lack of public consultation, the city stated that the public had been duly informed. That wasn’t all that happened to Port Alberni’s waterfront this month, with oil dumped into a catch basin making its way out into the waters by the Clutesi Haven Marina. A positive development for the waterfront came in the form of a new beach at the old Esso property between Harbour Quay and Harbour Quay Marina. The RCMP honoured the Moncton fallen during a solemn march down Redford Street.

Out of the mouths of dogs LORI WELBOURNE

A Brighter Note

A

s I type this week’s column I have four precious pups sleeping at my feet. Two are my 30-pound Cockapoos, Lola and Charlie, and the other two are my friend’s dogs who each weigh at least twice that. One of them is a Labradoodle named Sierra that I dog-sit often, the fourth is a Portuguese Water Dog who has been staying with us for the last two weeks while her family is on vacation. Kahli is her name and she is, as my Papa would have called her, a furry little rascal. To be fair, the other three fit that description as well, but this one’s mischievous in a different way than I’m accustomed to. I can’t say I wasn’t warned though. “Give her these,”

my friend Kari had said, handing me a bag of assorted items before leaving on her trip. “She always has to have something hanging out of her mouth.” Kari was right about that. But her pooch’s oral fixation extended well beyond the bag of dog toys and goodies she supplied me with. In fact, Kahli grew tired of what was in that bag right away and searched high and low in her new surroundings for more interesting things to sniff, mangle and relocate to our back yard.

Out there I discovered the chewed-up comb, toothbrush, bottle caps, Tupperware lids, Christmas ornaments, markers, underpants and socks that she’d taken from the house. Thankfully I didn’t find any empty jars of peanut butter, boxes of cereal or bags of potato chips like those I’ve found from my dogs in years past. I certainly didn’t want her getting sick or blowing her healthy diet, but controlling what she ate wasn’t always easy. Continued / A14

break resolutions because they’re not really resolving to do anything different. They’re just wishing. Without a strong resolve, success is highly unlikely, as one needs to commit, to choose into an intentional process that will make change. Goal setting, while admirable, is essentially pointless. Goals, in and of themselves, aren’t sustainable. They say where a person wants to go, not how they’re going to get there. What is needed, are new habits, a new way of living that will bring different results. People cannot think/ talk their way out of or into a habit. Agreeably, resolutions are the first step toward change. Yet, thinking/talking about making a change won’t do it. People have to be prepared to make and take strategic actions. Remember: actions speak louder than words.Willpower. A 2013 study by Wilhelm Hoffmann of the University of Chicago, showed that people with the best self-control, paradoxically, are the ones who use their willpower less often. Instead of fending off one urge after another, these people set up their lives to minimize temptations, using their willpower proactively. Brains cannot hold opposing ideas at the same time. People act according to what they imagine or believe about themselves and the world. ‘Walk it like you talk it’ is the congruence of behaviour matching beliefs and congruence leads to success. So is a person ‘a nonsmoker temporarily challenged by the use of tobacco or a smoker who is desperately trying to quit?’ Continued / A14

Practice, practice and then do it again some more. When a routine is repeated daily, it soon becomes part of the conscious thinking. It then seeps into the habit part of the brain, creating

new neurons-synapses connections. This new hard wiring increases efficiency. Constant repetition helps actions become easier to perform thus the actions are more pleasure than work. Pleasure supports

sustainability. The point here is that is important to ‘be the change you want to be’ and becoming so is anything but easy. As professional support is often needed and helpful it is a good

idea to speak with a doctor (GP), health professional or a therapist/counsellor.

more interested in dismantling the figurine than ingesting it, but I worried she might swallow one of the small pieces so I immediately tried to get it away from her. Of course this was exactly what she was hoping for: a highspeed chase. Like so many times in the past two weeks I ran around the house chasing her, calling for her to stop. And like so many times she would pause briefly to look back at me, gleefully wagging her tail before running some more and eventually escaping out the

doggy door that was almost too small for her to squeeze through. On this particular occasion I managed to get outside fast enough to see her hide her toy— previously known as my daughter’s toy—in the snow. I went to the spot she’d dropped it, plunged my hand into the fluffy white stuff and rescued Barbie’s legs. I then went about collecting the rest of her remains. With the exception of one arm, which is still missing in action, I found everything including the blonde smiling head. Kahli only had two

days left with us at that point, but I wasn’t taking any chances and got her some high quality dental chew bones. They didn’t provoke any chases from us, but they still seemed to keep her happily busy. Once the snow melts I expect we’ll uncover some more mutilated treasures to remind us of our adventures with Kahli the klepto. Until next time, she and her antics will be missed around here.

By the time I came into the kitchen and heard the familiar clacking sound of Kahli’s teeth breaking something apart it was way too late to save it. Out of her mouth dangled “Cheerleader Barbie” and more than 30 of her chewed up body parts were strewn down the hallway like a plastic crumb trail. Fortunately Kahli seemed far
