Target Corporation is pulling the plug on its Canadian stores because the U.S.-based retailer has been losing billions since venturing north of the border less than two years ago. The Courtenay Target and all other Canadian outlets are expected to close in 16 to 20 weeks, the company said Thursday. “We tried to do too much, much too fast,” Target spokesperson Molly Snyder said from headquarters in Minneapolis. “In doing so, we did face some significant operational challenges.” Since the start of 2011, she said Target has devoted about $7 billion in resources – $4.5 billion of capital investment and $2.5 billion in operating losses. There are 133 Target stores in Canada with about 17,600 employees. The Courtenay store opened in summer 2013 at the former Zellers location at Driftwood Mall. Pat McKenna is the store team leader. While officials would not respond to requests as to the number of jobs to be lost with the Courtenay closing, they did say, at the time of the opening, that the store would employ “about 150 team members”. Target also has outlets in Campbell River, Nanaimo and Victoria. The store was bustling Friday with customers scouring the shelves for discounted merchandise. “(We shop) here a little bit, about two or three times a month,” said customers Shane

PHOTO BY ERIN HALUSCHAK and Stephanie outside the store Friday afternoon. “Now we’ll probably have to go to Walmart. (Target closing) will definitely kill the mall.” Another shopper said while she doesn’t shop at the store often, she noted “it’s a shame — it was just not a good business model for Canada.” Snyder notes the company faced challenges with in-stocks and out-of-stocks. “We launched a new distribution and supply-team model when we came to Canada, and we struggled with that,” she said, noting “issues of pricing perception. “The challenges were just too great to overcome, and they didn’t

inspire the guests to come back.” She said the company has seen some “renewed momentum” in the U.S. where it has 1,801 stores. Target launched in Canada in March, 2013. “It was our first international expansion,” Snyder said. “We absolutely came to Canada for all the right reasons. We knew guests had an affinity for the Target brand. We knew that our value proposition had a lot of great potential. What it came down to is, because of the real estate opportunity that we were able to seize upon in terms of requiring the lease holds in the dollar stores, we just moved too quickly. “While this has been an incredibly hard decision, this allows us

to focus our efforts domestically in the U.S.” Target Corporation has created a trust fund that will provide a minimum 16 weeks of compensation to most Canadian-based employees, including payments and benefit coverage for those not required for the full wind-down period. “That was something that was really important to our CEO,” Snyder said. “As we exit the country we wanted to make sure we were treating our teams fairly.” Stores will remain open during the liquidation process.

Home Depot targeting 26 new hires

Terry Farrell

Record Staff

An option has been created for workers affected by last week’s Target announcement: Courtenay Home Depot is hiring! Spring is the busiest season for the home renovation giant, and the company needs some holes filled. “We are looking for 164 hires for the whole Pacific (predominantly Vancouver Island) district - and for the Courtenay store we are looking for approximately 26,” said Home Depot district human resources manager Teri Voss. The Courtenay store will begin its hiring process immediately, with the goal

of having all positions filled by the end of March. And it’s not only temporary/ seasonal positions available. “Not at all,” said Voss. “At the current requisitions we have open for the Courtenay location, we have eight part-time and one full-time… with more requisitions opening up soon. “We are only hiring one temporary, I believe, with the rest being permanent part-time and permanent full-time.” The Home Depot hiring announcement comes on the heels of Target announcing the closure of all Canadian stores, including the Courtenay location, which will leave dozens of locals with retail experience looking for work. Home Depot Canada is hiring approx-

imately 5,500 workers nation-wide, including more than 650 associates in B.C. While Voss would not comment regarding the timing of the Home Depot action, she is confident the positions will be filled. “We are always looking for great people,” she said. “This is a really exciting time of year for us. We are looking for great talent, with the opening of the Garden Centre soon… we are expecting a great season and we are really hoping to see some great talent apply.” The Courtenay location will not have a hiring fair per se. Voss recommends that anyone interested in employment apply online at homedepot.ca/jobs

The residents of Hornby Island have spoken with a resounding “nay” to the Hornby Island fire hall funding. The Comox Valley Regional District applied the Alternative Approval Process to seek elector support for a $1.6 million loan to help fund the construction of a new fire hall on Hornby Island. In compliance with the rules, 10 per cent of the electorate – 83 or

more electors – had to submit response forms opposing the adoption of the bylaw to borrow the funds. A total of 212 response forms, representing 25.5 per cent

of the electorate, were received by the Jan. 15 deadline. There were originally 220 forms received, however eight submissions subsequently requested (in writing)

with a three-month hospital stay, the family came home. Talia visits physiotherapists, speech pathologists, audiologists, neuroradiologists and eye doctors on a regular basis, but Kelsey said she is “beyond ecstatic” with her progress. She is currently being fed with a G-tube, needs oral therapy to help her learn to swallow, and struggles with tight muscles and ligaments in her legs. In September, Talia was able to make a huge step in her development by pulling herself along the floor; “she’s understanding the concept of feet,” added Kelsey. Shortly before Christmas, she received Botox injections in her legs which helps loosen the tight muscles, enabling her to sit up straight and stand. Therapy has helped significantly, noted Kelsey, as Talia’s hand used to be clenched tightly but now is open and is able to grab and touch. “She’s definitely going to be left handed,” she added with a laugh. While medial appointments will continue, Variety has pledged to assist the family with additional costs not covered by the medical system. The annual Variety Show of Hearts Telethon is scheduled this year for Feb. 14 and 15, with all funds raised in the province staying in B.C. For more information, visit www.variety.bc.ca.

UROC to kick off year with AGM Ryan Parton

Special to the Record

Fresh off one of their most exciting years to date, the United Riders of Cumberland (UROC) are kicking off 2015 with its annual general meeting, which is open to the public on Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Riding Fool Hostel. Of particular interest to anyone who enjoys Cumberland’s vast trail network will be an update on planned logging operations in the area and progress on UROC’s land-use agreement with landowners. Attendees will also find out about upcoming events, including the opening of Cumberland’s new jump park, a joint

open house with the Village of Cumberland and UROC’s second annual Trails Forum, a twoday trail-building workshop. “We’ve been working hard on a couple of major capital projects over the last year with the jump park and land-use agreements,” says UROC president Mike Manara. “We look forward to seeing those projects come to fruition this year while maintaining our core club activities: group rides, races and fundraising.” Established in 2008, UROC’s mandate includes building and maintaining mountain bike infrastructure, hosting races and group rides, facilitating access to trails and generally advocating for the sport of mountain biking.

The annual general meeting will give UROC’s 180 members a chance to vote in a new board of directors, learn the result of past events and grant applications and, of course, enjoy refreshments from Tarbell’s Deli. Memberships will be available. “2014 was an exciting year, and 2015 looks like it will be just as full of new developments,” says Manara. “If you’re at all interested in mountain biking in the Comox Valley, I highly encourage you to get involved. Being part of UROC is an excellent way to help shape the direction of the sport and the development of our trail network.” To learn more visit www.unitedridersofcumberland.com.

Three new shows at the art gallery Submitted

The Strathcona Orchestra.

PHOTO SUBMITTED

An orchestral tour of Broadway Bravo for Broadway! Join the Strathcona Symphony Orchestra on a musical tour of seven decades of the best of the Broadway stage. Under the baton of Maestro Pippa Williams aboard a musical magic carpet you will visit the blue skies and waters of South Pacific, the moody, gloomy world of the Phantom of the Opera, the sad, dreary tone of Fiddler on the Roof, the grim violent slums of the setting for West Side Story or the exotic court of the King of Siam with Anna. The background to the stories is drawn from many sources old and new. Lerner and Loewe took George Bernard Shaw’s classic play Pygmalion and

adapted it skillfully into the lavish musical My Fair Lady. Set in the lovely scenery of Austria The Sound of Music tells the story of the Von Trapp family. Come and join the Strathcona Symphony Orchestra on this musical tour of the highlights of the best of Broadway. We supply the music and you supply the memories. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25 at the Native Sons Hall in Courtenay. Tickets ($15) are available at Blue Heron Books in Comox and Laughing Oyster Books in Courtenay. For more information call 250-331-018.

There will be an opening reception for three new shows at the Comox Valley Art Gallery on Friday evening, Jan. 23. Activities will start at 6 p.m. with a pre-show talk featuring local artists Kelly Gough and Joyce Lindemulder, plus visiting artist Barbara Bickel, an associate professor at Southern Illinois University. Following the talk there will be a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. with snacks, refreshments and a cash bar. Both events are free and open to the public. The three shows being celebrated that evening also include adjunct programming and community partnerships. The Way Things Are & How To Be is a two-person show of artworks by Gough and Lindemulder. Incorporating works on paper, sculpture and performance, the show examines questions related to female identity, domestic labour, and representations of ‘other’. The show will run from Jan. 24 to March 7. On Saturday, Feb. 14, there will be adjunct performance events starting at

noon and the two artists will deliver a talk at 1:15 p.m. Bickel’s Oracular ReEncounters is an installation and research residency. Her residency runs from Jan. 21 to Feb. 18, and the exhibit will be on display until March 7. Bickel collaborates with R. Michael Fisher, who is in a parallel residency at Creekside Commons. The two artists will present a talk and community dialogue at Creekside Commons, 2202 Lambert Drive, on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. Parking is limited, so please car pool if possible and look for the parking attendant. Bickel will deliver an artist talk Feb. 10, from noon to 1 p.m., at the North Island College Stan Hagen Theatre. She will also be part of the performance events on Feb. 14 at CVAG. After is a group show of paintings by Fine Arts Students at North Island College. Twelve students Joyce Lindemulder and Kelly Gough are local artists taught by instructor presenting the show The Way Things Are & How To Megan Wilson will pres- Be. Herb Alpert tribute at the Avalanche

Every now and again, the Georgia Strait Jazz Society digresses from straight jazz into a lot of fun, for no other reason than people like to have a good time, and a reminiscence. This Thursday is one such event when, due to popular demand, the much anticipated tribute to Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass performs at The Avalanche Bar & Grill at 7:30 p.m. Spanning a musical career of over 50 years, Alpert built a solid reputation as one of the most successful performing artists of the 20th century. He co-wrote his first of many hit singles, The Lonely Bull, back in 1962 while attending a bullfight (featuring a local mariachi band) in Tijuana, Mexico. Due to a growing demand for live appearances, the “Brass”, comprising some of the best

L.A. session musicians, was formed in 1964 and it soon became one of the highest paid acts in show business. Tijuana Brass awards and honours include five No. 1 hits, 28 albums on the Billboard charts, eight Grammy Awards, 14 platinum albums, 15 gold albums, and more than 72 million albums sold worldwide.

The local ‘Brass’ Thursday’s lineup is not quite so illustrious, but the fun level will be no less, with guitarist Rick Husband, keyboard master Michael Eddy, drummer Neil Clark, Jake Masri and Jay Havelaar on trumpet, and Grahame Edwards on bass. If you loved the happy music of the ‘60s and ‘70s, then this is the night for you.

Pipeline protests featured in WCFF sneak preview film tonight at NIC

Get a head start on your World Community Film Festival viewing with a sneak preview of the awardwinning documentary, Above All Else, tonight (Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. in the North Island College Theatre, Courtenay. Admission is by donation. Above All Else is an intimate portrait of landowners and activists in East Texas who take peaceful direct action to stop construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. Risking financial ruin and their personal safety, these unforgettable people and their stories become an exploration of the human spirit. The main character in this film, David Daniel, spent decades as a gymnast and stunt man before retiring with his wife and newborn daughter to the woods of East Texas. Shortly after buying his acreage, he learned that surveyors for TransCanada were trespassing on his land. Daniel becomes worried about the pipeline and mounts protests

Temporary Services

“One call, and we’ll do it all”

Let us take care of your labour needs without the hassles of costly advertising and payroll burden

and awareness campaigns. Soon, other tactics are called for. Along with some students and spirited older women (“the more I read” about tar sands, one says, “the pissed-offer I get”), Daniel starts training for peaceful direct action. He is informed that he could be arrested on his own property for trespassing if he impedes the construction of the pipeline. The protesters construct and occupy treehouses that will be destroyed if TransCanada’s tree-cutting machinery sticks to its threatened route. Against all odds, the demonstrators refuse to stand down. This dramatic story is a window into how social change happens. For links to film trailers and descriptions of all the films in the 24th World Community Film Festival (Feb. 6 and 7 in the Sid Williams Theatre and nearby venues), go to www.worldcommunity.ca. Earle Couper Record Staff

Two Comox Valley snowboarders are representing Canada at the 2015 FIS World Championships in Kreischberg, Austria from Jan. 15-24. Darcy Sharpe is on the men’s slopestyle team while Carle Brenneman is competing for the women’s snowboardcross team. “We’re expecting standout performances from our veterans and up-and-coming athletes,” a Canada Snowboard spokesperson said. “The Canadian slopestyle team is coming off a strong camp in Whistler, where the nation’s best trained in preparation for the FIS World Championships as well as Air and Style Innsbruck and X-Games. “Mikey Ciccarelli and Darcy Sharpe are two of our young, talented slopestyle athletes. They’re representing Canada for the first time at the World Championships. Mikey started the season off strong with a ninth-place finish at Dew Tour, while Darcy dominated in New Zealand, where he finished second at the Burton High Fives. The young slopestyle duo is certainly going to turn some heads in Austria,” the spokesperson said. The snowboardcross circuit has been plagued with a slow start to the season. With the European resorts struggling to find snow, they’ve had multiple World Cups cancelled. Led by Dominique Maltais, Brenneman and Kevin Hill, the team has made their way to Austria with high expectations, the spokesperson added.

Team South MVP Seamus Maguire opened the scoring at the 2015 VIJHL All Star Classic by going top shelf and beating Team North goalie Greg Maggio cleanly on this play. Team North defeated Team South 6-4 Sunday at the Comox Valley Sports Centre in a game hosted by the Comox Valley Glacier Kings.

Mount Washington ski team races well at Whistler The icy conditions from man-made snow were no deterrent for the Mount Washington U14 ski race team of Natalia Bellefleur, Luke Hoefer, Emilly Johnston, Ava Langevin, Kieran Nilsen, Sylvi Nymann, Chris Raduy along with Coach Krystal Francisty last weekend (Jan. 10- 11) in Whis-

tler. After one day of training in Whistler, the athletes embarked on tackling a steep, icy and challenging slalom course on Whistler Mountain. No small task so early in what started off as a dubious season snow-wise. As per usual, the little mountain that could team of athletes

did not disappoint! The race hosted 58 athletes in both the women’s and men’s divisions. In the first race of day one, Ava Langevin roared down the course for a ninth place finish with Emilly Johnston, in her first year of this age group, was hot on her heels in 10th and Sylvi Nymann in 17th. For the men it was

Mount Washington U14 Ski Team members: Back row - Emilly Johnston (Comox), Natalia Bellefleur (Campbell River), Sylvi Nymann (Campbell River), Ava Langevin (Comox). Front row - Luke Hoefer (Nanaimo), Chris Raduy (Qualicum Bach), Kieran Nilsen (Comox).

Kieran Nilsen pulling in with an eighth place finish and Luke Hoefer in 37th. The second race of day one proved to be more challenging as the conditions and the course changed in the afternoon. Johnston blasted down the hill winning an impressive fifth place, Natalia Bellefleur easing in a personal best of 12th place for the day, Langevin in 13th and Nymann in 17th. For the men it was a stellar afternoon for Chris Raduy as he slipped in a personal best himself in 10th place and Hoefer also a personal best in 11th. What would have been a fourth place finish for Nilsen was crushed when he slipped past and missed the last gate and was disqualified. The Mount Washington team continued to shine and catch the competition unaware with high placements over the weekend. On day two in the combined two-run slalom event Johnston

continued to be consistent with a fifth place finish and personal best, Bellefleur in 11th, another personal best, Langevin in 13th with Nymann taking a 19th spot. For the men in the combined event, Raduy took home an impres-

sive fifth place finish and Nilsen placed 11th while Hoefer was having the race of his life, missed a gate, had to hike to make the gate in time before the next racer came by, but was not able to finish. Said coach Krystal Francisty, “I am so

proud of our athletes with a mountain of our size and team of our size all of our athletes finished within the top 20 for each race – this is something that we should all be very proud of.” – Mount Washington Ski Club

Malcolm Smith

In loving memory

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of our father Malcolm Smith at Glacier View Lodge on January 14th. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Christina, sons George (Helen), Ken, daughters Linda, Caroline (Paul) 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, brothers Alex (Morag), Willie (Georgie) and sister Hazel (Mike). Malcolm was a friend to everyone and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him as a generous, fun-loving and hardworking family man. He was an active member of the Cumberland Legion and the Comox Valley Lions Club and took great pleasure with all the activities they did and the community ventures. Our family would like to give our heartfelt thanks to the fantastic staff at Glacier View Lodge for the wonderful care you gave to our father during his time with you. Celebration of Malcolm’s life will be on January 21, 2015 2:00pm at the Comox Valley Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre. Always in our thoughts and forever in our hearts.

October 16, 1948 – January 12, 2015 Tom Price died peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, B.C. He is survived by his loving partner Betty Boose and her family; Tom’s daughters Shannon, Jessica, and Vanessa; grandchildren Fynn and Lily; and sisters Ann Marie, Pat and their families. Tom was born in Vancouver but lived and worked in the Comox Valley for over thirty five years. He loved island life, especially camping, hiking and fishing – he even caught a Tyee off the coast of Campbell River during one of the fishing trips he loved to take with Betty. At Tom’s request, there will be no formal service. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorial donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated.

Gordon Logan

Sept 3, 1946 to Jan 12, 2015 Sadly, Gordon Logan passed away quietly in St Joseph’s Hospital in Comox B.C. Gordon was born in Vancouver BC and retired to the Comox Valley, following a career in Air Traffic Control which spanned both Military and Civilian operations. Gordon loved to cook, golf and had a passion for wintering in his beloved Mexico. His last trip to Mexico was cut short when he became ill and made an early return home. Survived by his loving wife Shirley, Son Dale, Daughter Erin (Derek) and grandson Logan, as well as his three brothers, sister and their families. Gord made friends easily and will be missed by many. Truly one of the good guys, Gordon passed away Jan 12, 2015. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Glacier Greens Golf Course Clubhouse in Comox, Friday, Jan 23, 2015 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Dave9246@shaw.ca. www.glaciergreens.com. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Heart and Stroke Society would be appreciated. www.heartandstroke.bc.ca/ Those we love don’t go away They walk beside us every day Unseen unheard but always near Still loved still missed and very dear

Victory for a process

T

he residents of Hornby Island have spoken, and emphatically so. The Comox Valley Regional District utilized the controversial Alternate Approval Process in an effort to push through a bylaw calling for a $1.9 million loan to help build a new fire hall on Hornby Island. Concerns from the residents were many, not only about the AAP, but about the very process used by the CVRD to determine the need for a new fire hall. Many Hornby Islanders felt that they were kept in the dark during the consultation process, and even questioned the validity of the unsigned, unstamped report, presented on the CVRD website. Many “Hornbyers” also questioned the math surrounding the $24 per year tax levy to be imposed upon homeowners. And, of course, the biggest concern was the implementation of the AAP itself. The AAP is regarded by many as a tool that relies heavily upon voter apathy to get otherwise contentious motions passed. The process calls for 10 per cent of the electorate to speak out against a motion, by way of written submission, in order to put a halt to the motion and force it to a referendum – a “voter-ordered injunction” so to say. It’s a tedious, time-consuming procedure for opponents to have their voices heard - and common opinion is that the governance of the day uses the AAP with that very same attitude, banking on apathy to kick in. Instead, the residents of Hornby Island kicked back - and in doing so, they proved that the AAP is actually a useful tool. Ironic: the very process the electorate was concerned about, proved to be the one that worked in their favour. And while the CVRD members who were in favour of the fire hall bylaw may consider the results of this particular AAP a loss, in the bigger scheme of things, it’s a win, not only for the CVRD, but for any governance that considers using an AAP. The Hornby Island fire hall vote will stand as an example of how the AAP is not an underhanded tool used by politicians, but rather an effective way for the community to have its say. The Hornby Island vote justifies the process. It proves that the AAP can work; all it takes is an engaged community. –TF Record Question of the Week

Don’t get me started. In the past year I have had an argument with a registered nurse at a blood donor clinic, annoyed that the health ministry denied her imagined “right” to infect frail patients with influenza, and with a veteran politician who only recently overcame a vague taboo against putting vaccines in her body. It’s no wonder people constantly fall for enviro-scares like toxins from the Alberta oil sands that are actually concentrated in cities where all that fuel is burned, or the threat of genetically modified canola oil, or smart meters. The media are frequently part of the problem, lacking scientific literacy and preferring conflict over common sense. At the risk of giving you too much information, I did a cleanse last year. It was for a screening colonoscopy, one of many that have taxed the B.C. health-care system since a new test was added to the standard medical checkup. Try that one if you’re over 50.

Hit-and-run victim says respect and accountability lacking Dear editor, There is an epidemic in the Comox Valley. It is preventable. But that will require a level of respect and accountability that is lacking in some people at the present time. I’m talking about the recent upturn in bicycle/ vehicular accidents at which the driver of the vehicle has failed to stop. My own recent incident on Monday afternoon, Jan 12, at 3:30 is a perfect example. Briefly, my wife and I were riding south on Ellenor Rd. from the direction of the Little River ferry toward

Comox. Bright day, yellow jackets, red rear lights flashing, impossible not to see us. The driver of the (black late-model import?) coming from behind decided that he could not wait 10 seconds for us to clear the Anderson/Ellenor intersection. He sped up, passed us, turned right and proceeded west toward Seal Bay. Fine, except that I had crashed into the side of his car, destroyed my front wheel, and ended up flat in the middle of the road. I would like to thank the people who stopped to help.

Harlan Price, calm and reassuring, transported Jan and I and our bikes back to Comox, Cathy Dickens along with several others checked that we were OK. In fact, everyone there except the driver of the black car stopped to help. To the driver. It’s called hit and run. It’s a criminal offence. Count yourself lucky that no one caught your licence plate number. The RCMP have you as file number 20015498. I know that they would love a chat. John Herschmiller Comox

Time for our government to start ‘reaching out’ to Canadians Dear editor, When a gun man in Australia held a number of people hostage and lives were lost, Prime Minister Harper was fast off the mark to offer condolences. Three gunmen kill 12 French citizens, Harper was offering condolences within a very short time. Harper referred to it as a “barbaric act”; a “grim reminder that no country is immune to ter-

rorist attacks we have seen elsewhere around the world”. The Canadian press reported PM Harper “instructed his Cabinet and senior officials to reach out to their French counterparts to offer assistance”. So kindly, so empathetic, so helpful. Now this is what we get in Canada from PM Harper and his cabinet, including our MP John Duncan: NOTHING.

Let’s hope PM Harper, our MP John Duncan and the Conservative cabinet start treating Canadians like they do foreign nationals. How about PM Harper start “reaching out” to the Premiers of Canada. How about PM Harper and his party start “reaching out” to Canadians and get our national health care act signed. How about PM Harper, our

MP John Duncan, and the Con. cabinet start reaching out to veterans and ensuring they get the services they deserve. While PM Harper is “instructing his cabinet....to reach out to their French counterparts...”, this is what he had to say in his year end message to Canadians when it came to 1,200 murdered Canadian First Nations women: “It isn’t really high on our

radar, to be honest.” I think it not unreasonable to conclude PM Harper cares more about Australian and French citizens than he does about Canadian citizens. If you can’t help Canadians, please move along and let someone else do it and MP Duncan, that goes for you too. E. A. Foster Comox

Misperceptions and antiquated attitudes regarding homelessness surprisingly common Dear editor, As someone who has experienced homelessness and also is one of ‘these people’ who got a start in Canada via the temporary foreign worker program it would be easy to be incredibly angered by the sentiments expressed by JF Logan( Homelessness will always exist, Letter to the Editor, Jan. 8 Comox Valley Record). Working as consultant with communities on homelessness including the Valley, has toughened me up however as these misperceptions and antiquated attitudes are surprisingly com-

mon. Research at home and internationally has dispelled archaic myths about who is homeless and how people become homeless, alongside demonstrating

how communities working together can prevent and therefore end homelessness. While the assumption may be correct that some people make the choice not to have a roof and four walls

Politicians must address real needs Dear editor, An open letter to all mayors, councillors and CVRD reps. Now that you have ensured your tenure for the next four years, it is time to give your heads a shake and concentrate on the needs of the Valley residents. We didn’t need an enlarged Lewis Centre, (which was built on a flood plain). We didn’t need a soccer field with artificial turf. We don’t need a new curling rink. We don’t need to consider spending money on cleaning up the estuary. We don’t need to invent new positions at top salaries and then hire more people to satisfy the new empire you have created. At this time, we need a clean, safe water supply. We need to concentrate on our infrastructure. You have increased all of the

service fees, you no doubt will be increasing our taxes well above the cost of living. It goes on and on. We not only pay for water usage at a single rate whether there are two or 10 people in a household, we also pay a frontage charge for water that we have to boil to ensure it is safe to use. Many years ago a discussion was held on a deep water intake, it was decided at that time to go with ultraviolet to purify the water. What we have now appears to indicate this cannot do the job. It is time for all of you to stop trying to please all of the special interest groups. Stand up and do the job you were elected to do. Govern for all the citizens of the Valley. Not just the vociferous few. Bernie Guyader Courtenay

surrounding them, this lifestyle choice is extremely rare. If you are going to make massive generalizations, then the truth is no one wants to be homeless. A truth backed by research. The government is beginning to accept its responsibility in how policies and systems have contributed to the situation. It now supports plans to end homelessness and the approach of ‘housing first’ as solution. Perhaps it’s time for all of us to look at how we also need to change. The Comox Valley is known to be a caring and generous community. Majority support in

the recent election question on funding homelessness solutions highlights this. Hopefully those whose compassion falls short for our residents troubled by housing will educate themselves and eventually open their hearts. Now is the time for all of us to gently challenge fear-based beliefs and narrow-mindedness wherever we see it. To use intelligent information and provide tangible support for the many people doing their best to create a community where everyone who wants a home can have one. Amanda Ridgway Cumberland

Where’s the Maple Leaf? Dear editor, I was wondering why the Comox Valley Visitor Centre can not (still) afford a Canadian flag? I asked them last August and still no flag. I had also asked the Member of Parliament to provide a flag, but no result. I thought federal tax dollars (ours) were used to build the visitor centre; but I suppose they never thought of budgeting for replacement Canadian flags! Ken Barth Cumberland

Discussion looks at emerging technologies

The use and development of innovative technologies can be found within a myriad of businesses, organizations and institutions. You are invited to attend an Emerging Technologies Panel Discussion, Jan. 23, featuring special guest and moderator, Andrew Wilkinson, Minister of Advanced Education, and several leaders in key emerging technology companies and institutions from green tech to gaming, aerospace to renewable energy.

Province cuts red tape for small biz The Province is extending its commitment to a net zero increase of regulatory requirements to 2019. A net zero increase means eliminating one existing requirement when a new requirement is needed up to 2019. The commitment was announced during the Canadian Federation of Independent Business’s (CFIB) annual Red Tape Awareness Week. CFIB’s national campaign raises public awareness about the burden of excessive regulations on small business and citizens and recognizes government’s efforts to cut red tape.

This is the first in a series of technology-specific sector meetings, seminars and regional collaboration activities to develop the local technology ecosystem, promote innovation and foster broader community engagement in the sector to expand the economy, as part of a new partnership between the Comox Valley Economic Development Society (CVEDS) and Innovation Island Technology Association (IITA). Panel speakers include Michael Weedon of the BC Bio-

energy Network, Mark Sylvester of ASAP Geomatix, Brian Kingzett of the VIU Deep Bay Marine Field Station, Elmer Sum of the Global Cleantech Cluster Association, Alex Pepper of Steelhead Games, Paul Manson of the Sea Breeze Power Corporation and Graham Truax of IITA. The discussion/luncheon is at the trades building at North Island College. Registration is 11:30 a.m. The luncheon and speakers are from 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The Vanier Towhees senior girls basketball team captured first place in the inaugural Brentwood Ogilvy Tournament last weekend. The first round game pitted the Towhees against Gulf Islands School with the Towhees handily winning at 51-36. Top scorers for Vanier were Dawson German with 17, Molly Mifsud nine, and Player of the Game Hope Lewis with eight. The early Saturday morning game saw the Vanier girls challenged by two top-level international players from Bodwell Academy. Anyone who has been reading my column for a few years will know of my love for this plant genus. So far, our garden inventory is at 42 species and cultivar, and counting. Almost without exception, this genus is bullet tough. Drought tolerant. Pest and disease resistant. Even rabbits and deer (mostly) leave them alone. I have a dwarf winter savory variety in my garden which is only 7.5 cm (three inches) high. Properly used, the delicate summer savory pairs well with eggs, vegetables, young greens and as an ingredient in a homemade tea mix. Winter savory, on the other hand, lends itself to slow-cook recipes. Use as a rub ingredient for roasting meats, add to a pot of dried beans or lentils, throw into a simmering soup or stew.
