Fentanyl taking a deadly toll By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
The pain-killing drug fentanyl is continuing to take a deadly toll as people consume what they think is heroin or oxycodone. On Jan. 13, a Maple Ridge mother of two died from using heroin laced with fentanyl. And the death of a man in Vancouver has police and Vancouver Coastal Health warning drug users of the potential consequences and dangers of ingesting street drugs and to watch for “fake drugs.” “No matter what the appearance of the drug being sold or what you are told it is, there is never any guarantee you are buying what you think you are buying,” said Dr. John Carsley, medical health officer at VCH. “In fact, very often the drug you purchase is not what you think it is.” See Fentanyl, 5

Foreign doctors settling here GP for Me attracts seven, two from U.K. By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

“Our goal in A GP For Me was only two doctors, so getting seven is amazing.” That program is an initiative of B.C. doctors and the Ministry of Health, with a goal to have everyone in B.C. who wants a family physician to have access to one. Research shows that continuous doctor-patient relationships lead to the best health outcomes. A GP For Me was led locally by the Division of Family Practice. Its research found there are 17,000 people in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows who do not

They also found that more than one-third of the community’s doctors will be retiring over the next 10 years, and in that same time frame the area’s population will grow by 19 per cent. The Division of Family Practice, an organization that represents 87 family physicians in the community, has been recruiting doctors, often competing with other communities in the region for their services. “We’ve been very successful at attracting GPs here,” said Treena

Two more doctors from the U.K. have agreed to move to Pitt Meadows, but have not yet arrived. A B-line bus route from the Haney Bus Loop to the Evergreen SkyTrain line in Coquitlam is part of the transportation plan.
Tim Fitzgerald/THE NEWS
Vision for transportation plan set Mayor Read contends not enough in it for Maple Ridge By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
T
he list of transportation improvements for Maple Ridge isn’t going to get any better, says the Mayors Council on Regional Transportation. So it will be up to Maple Ridge people to vote yes or no to another West Coast Express train during rush hours, a B-line bus service to the Evergreen SkyTrain and more buses in the ‘burbs – all to be partly paid for by a halfper-cent jump in provincial sales tax. “We are in the process of trying to win a campaign to fund this plan,” Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore said Monday. “We can’t be going back to open up the plan, and if we did, we’d have 22 mayors [asking] for breaks.” Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read told council last week that she wants more for Maple Ridge, that there’s not enough in the plan to justify the half-per-cent sales tax hike, now called the Congestion Improvement Tax. People decide in a mail-in ballot between
March 16 and May 29 whether they support the tax hike for TransLink. Moore said the plan is set. “At this point, the plan cannot be opened up to further negotiations.” He said mayors last year hammered out the Transportation and Transit Plan so it included something for all regions of Metro Vancouver. “I think we did a really good job in actually capturing where we needed to grow the system. We wanted to ensure that we were using good transportation policy in developing this and not just a wish list of everyone. If we did, this would be double in size.” Moore said the vision offers lots to Maple Ridge. The northeast sector, including Pitt Meadows and Coquitlam, will see the second-largest growth of bus service in the plan. But Read says the vision needs more details and to state exactly when Maple Ridge will see improvements. “Right now, there’s not any roll-out plan for any of the mayors. I would like to see a list of priorities – so that Maple Ridge knew what it was concretely getting, and when.” What will TransLink do with the money once it gets it, she asked. “The public is very clear, they don’t trust
TransLink. Using the mayors’ credibility to sell TransLink concerns me. That is not a long-term solution.” But according to Mayors Council on Thursday, a B-line or express bus service to Coquitlam “is one of the top priority B-line corridors.” The routes would start operating about two years after the tax hike, if approved. Shuttle bus service to Silver Valley is another “top priority” it says. That will be brought in within the first three years of the plan. But Maple Ridge engineer Dave Pollock says other documentation of the transportation plan still says that will take between six and 10 years. The plan’s appendix also doesn’t show that both Maple Ridge and Langley will get a Bline link to Coquitlam. The initial document said one or the other but not both. However, Thursday’s statement says the entire plan is now being updated to reflect new priorities, such as ensuring Maple Ridge gets a B-line within two years. The transportation vision also includes more money for the major road network, which helps pay for Maple Ridge road. Moore said across the TransLink system about 30 per cent of the buses pass people at bus stops because they’re overloaded.
“That tells you we need more bus service in the region.” The West Coast Express train is now standing room only by the time you get to Coquitlam. But an extra train for the rush hour service will be added by 2018, says the Mayor’s Council, increasing the number morning and evening trains to and from Vancouver from five to six. The Transportation and Transit Plan was created last year under direction of the provincial government. Read, however, opposed the adoption of the sales tax increase at the mayors council because members don’t have enough say in how TransLink is being run, while being asked to be accountable for funding. The plebiscite must take place before a study proceeds on a rapid-bus system linking Maple Ridge to Coquitlam Centre and the SkyTrain system, Moore pointed out. Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Port Coquitlam and TransLink all have agreed to pay $10,000 each for a study that will determine what kind of rapid bus, either B-Line that uses bus lanes with signal priority or a rapid bus system that has its own road way, will be used.

Seyem Qwantlen Business Group. “There’s been some interest there. The Vancouver company Property Development Group, in partnership with Kwantlen, intended to begin construction of up to 275,000-sq.-foot of retail space in 2014. The shopping centre was supposed to have been the first stage of a phased project that would have included up to 450 homes on the north side of the highway and an ecorecreation area along the Fraser River on the band’s land, Indian Reserve No. 5. Now, however, the band is looking at development potential of the entire 300-acre reserve, in collaboration with Maple Ridge’s economic development department. That could include education, tourism, industrial, commercial and residential uses of riverfront land from the Lougheed Highway to the bank of the Fraser River for a distance of about 1.6 kilometres.
A major issue that’s still to be resolved, however, is getting sewer and water services, which requires the cooperation of the City of Maple Ridge. In 2012, the chair of the Lower Mainland treaty advisory committee on Metro Vancouver, Ralph Drew, warned municipalities to set firm agreements with First Nations businesses to protect local taxpayers from the costs of the required infrastructure. But Arkell said there’s been no indication from the City of Maple Ridge that there are any concerns. “Really, what we’re saying is ‌ the time is right to explore this again. This is designed to get the message out there.â€?
Plans in works for corner property Another empty lot will be filled in Maple Ridge’s downtown if council gives the sayso. An application has been filed to build a two-storey building
containing a food store and butcher shop on the main floor and offices on the second storey. Meridian Meats and Seafood wants to put the building at the corner of Dewdney Trunk Road and 227th Street, at 22710 Dewdney Trunk Rd. The main entrance will be on the east side of the building, with parking at the back and at the east side of the property. The design will feature a sloped metal roof with gable features. A staff report notes that Maple Ridge’s downtown plan usually requires buildings to be three storeys, but the zoning on this particular lot only requires two storeys. Nevertheless, the company wants to create a higher roof height to help contribute to the ambience of downtown. Pedestrian access will be from 227th and Dewdney Trunk Road. Council will deal with the application at a future meeting.

for a big-box mall on Kwantlen First Nations reserve lands on Lougheed Highway had been fading. Several smaller stores were interested, but it was proving difficult to get an anchor tenant into what would have been a new 30-acre mall, conveniently on the highway and close to the Fraser River. Now, there’s renewed interest in the property at 250th Street, part of Indian Reserve 5, one of the Langley band’s reserves on the north side of the Fraser River. Since the collapse of talks between the City of Maple Ridge and SmartCentres mall developer on a land deal at 105th Avenue and Lougheed Highway, there’s been more inquiries about the Kwantlen lands. A Kwantlen news release last week said the band has been “approached by several significant developers who have expressed interest in the site for mixed-use phased development. “We want to take a serious look at it again, said Peter Arkell, with

Kits available Fentanyl from front
“It may be stronger, contaminated, or contain a completely different substance.” Last June, the B.C. Coroner’s Service warned about a spike in overdose deaths from the drug, saying there had been 13 fatal overdoses in the Fraser Health region in the first six months of 2014, with four of those in Maple Ridge. The trend is continuing, though Fraser Health wanted the Coroner’s Service to provide the most recent numbers. “There is an increase in fentanyl-related overdoses,” said Dr. Marcus Lem,
with Fraser Health. The number of overdose deaths in Metro Vancouver has remained constant, “but the percentage that is related to fentanyl has definitely increased.” That worries health authorities and police, he added. Ridge Meadows RCMP spokesman said fentanyl is on Maple Ridge streets. “This is a very dangerous drug. “It’s pretty much all fentanyl, which is scary.” Vancouver Coastal Health has issued a warning about fake oxycodone and ecstasy pills,
advising drug users to watch for high fever, seizures, irregular heartbeat and unconsciousness, as well not to do them alone and only to take small doses at first. Lem said fentanyl, used for post-operative pain killer, is more potent than heroin. It is also easier to transport and cheaper to sell and more profitable for dealers, than importing heroin from overseas. It can be mixed with heroin. “Fentanyl is more powerful than heroin. It’s like 100 times stronger per weight than heroine is.” It’s usually marketed as a fake heroin or fake oxycontin, Lem said. “The folks that are producing this don’t really care about quality
control. They’re just trying to make a buck and they don’t really care if something happens to anybody.” Fake heroin or fake oxycontin can have almost no fentanyl in it or it can have lethal doses fentanyl. “You have absolutely no idea what you’re getting.” Lem said Fraser Health provides Take Home Naloxone kits, which can reverse an opiate overdose. Alouette Addictions Society in downtown Maple Ridge has given out 10 such kits since November, said counsellor Garry Joe. “We’ve noticed there are more overdoses on fentanyl.”
No more physicians from S. Africa Doctors from front
Diplomatic agreements between the governments of South Africa and Canada have stopped the flow of physicians from that country. More doctors have been recruited to B.C. from South Africa than from any other country in recent years. But doctors from the UK are willing to come to Canada, at-
tracted by the quality of life, said Innes. “The biggest common thread is personal life/work balance,” she said, adding that doctors in the UK are expected to work long hours. Dr. Luitingh said the recruiters showcase the community, with its schools, neighbourhoods, recreation opportunities and other attractive features.
They have a Red Carpet program, which virtually rolls one out for foreign physicians. “Our community convinces them to stay here,” she said. Before they practice in Canada, doctors from other counties must go through a qualifications process with the College of Physicians, and are also mentored and supervised by a Canadian doctor.

Paying price As the price of gas hovers around $1 a litre, the prognostications of $2 gas seem like a distant nightmare. It’s certainly a lot less than the $1.50 a litre we were paying at the pump last summer. The savings amount to about $30 per month per car, depending on the size of the vehicle. If gas prices stay low, we’ll likely also see savings in other consumer goods as transportation costs ease. That extra money could find its way into other segments of the economy. Or into bolstering savings accounts and retirement funds battered in recent years by uncertainty and just the high cost of daily living. But there’s a downside. Canada is an oil-producing country, and the boon of cheaper oil comes with a price. On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada cut its key interest rate to .75 per cent from one per cent, the first time its changed that rate since September, 2010. Nobody expected it. Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz said the move was insurance against the potentially destructive effects of cheap oil. Poloz didn’t mince words; he said the drop in the price of oil is “unambiguously bad” for Canada’s economy. Already that’s playing out, as thousands of workers are laid off from the oil fields of Alberta. Those job losses have hit that province’s real estate and retail sectors, downturns that could quickly spread to neighbouring provinces and beyond. The drop in oil prices has been matched by the devaluation of the Canadian dollar, which is now at its lowest point compared to the American dollar in five years. So while pulling up to the gas pump may now put a smile on your face, pay heed to that growing pit in your stomach. It just goes to prove the old adage: we have to be careful what we wish for. – Black Press

Putting a hole in community There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children – Nelson Mandela.
T
he Iron Horse Safe House is a refuge for troubled 13- to 18-year-olds exposed Along the Fraser to the dangers of life on Jack Emberly the street. It will close its doors after Jan. 31. Changes in federal funding now exclude emergency shelters that counsel children despite their effectiveness. The new Homeless Partnership Strategy should have assured shelter programs were supported until alternate funding was in place. Iron Horse manager Stephanie Ediger says the shelter has helped troubled youth get their lives back on track. “Our amazing staff keep kids from going into addiction, crime, or prostitution, and make them want to go back to school.” In these ways, Iron Horse has provided a crucial service to the Ministry of Children and Family Development. It should step up to fund the shelter, but has remained silent. Former Maple Ridge councillor Cheryl Ashley says MCFD hasn’t the funds to do so. Is the problem funding shelters and its bureaucratic structure, as well?
Q
uestion of the week:
During the last election, former mayor Ernie Daykin said losing Iron Horse would “put a huge hole in the community.” He vowed to fight for it. “This is something we can go to the wall on.” Political commitment now could make our society’s soul shine. But to date, empathy for children has been expressed, not by government, but individuals. Donations have kept the shelter open an extra month. Letters extoll its value. Teesha Sharma says it, “gave me a chance to find me, because I was so squashed down.” Teesha says Iron Horse got her back into the stream of life. She found her own apartment and attended college. Now, she wants to be a community support worker so she can help others. “When you see the heartbreak of damaged lives, someone in a downward spiral,” says Ediger, “you want to make a difference. It’s human beings reaching out to others. Knowing that people are willing to walk beside you - that’s how change in lives happens.” I have a personal story about kids reversing destructive behavior when adults care. The office of a school I worked in overflowed with kids sent for disruptive classrooms behavior. It wasn’t easy to learn or teach in their rooms, and the students, all boys from grades 4 to 7, weren’t getting anything out of school either. As Mr. E., the resource room teacher, I knew these guys.
Are you spending the money saved with lower gas prices? Yes: 64% – No: 36%
They were likeable, and creative, and could be fun, but all had discipline problems like mine when I was in grade six. I drew up a plan to address their antisocial behavior through a non-academic program that would appeal to the boys. For three hours a week, it would reduce interruptions to the secretary, principal, teachers. The principal who liked it, found grant money to pay for release time I needed. I taught our dirty dozen to congo drum in unison. Because they’d never worked with others well, this took time. I told the boys stories about heroes who overcame problems and then helped their families and neighbors. The boys wrote conflict resolution skits, and performed them for others. They made personal behavior plans and shared progress they’d made. They became empathic, and mutually encouraging. Classroom disruptions became less frequent. Office visitors noted positive change. The school’s reputation rose. The program paid for itself many times over. Iron Horse has also paid for itself many times over. It’s saved kids from wasted lives which costs all of us in time. A healthy society looks after its children. It makes sense. As Ernie Daykin said, the loss of Iron Horse “would put a hole in the community.” Current political leaders shouldn’t let that happen. Jack Emberly is a retired teacher, local author and environmentalist.

THE NEWS/letters Missing Target Kids park goes to the dogs Editor, The News: I’m very sad to see Target leave, and so many losing their jobs. My daughter has worked for Target part-time, saving up for college, and the store has been an excellent employer. Our city needs to really work hard to find another tenant for all of these two hundred or so workers. These are tough times for many in our community, and this is just going to make matters worst for many families. I hope our mayor and councillors will make this a priority in the months to come and find a suitable replacement for these workers. Very sad for our community and the families who need this work. Thanks, Target for being a good employer. Sorry to see you go. John E. McKenzie Maple Ridge
Just do as I say? Editor, The News: Re: Who I met on Burnaby Mountain (Along the Fraser, Jan. 9). Jack Emberly’s piece on the Burnaby mountain protestors left out the part where the City of Burnaby parks and recreation staff had to clean up their garbage. Truckloads of waste were hauled away and paid for by the taxpayers of Burnaby. Editor, The News: Re: Three new off-leash areas (The News, Jan. 16). I love my dog. She has a better life then a good percentage of the world’s children. But I strongly disagree with council taking away three playing fields to add to the three dog parks Maple Ridge already has. Parks and recreation mentioned that it would save $27,000 in bags, which it will no longer supply. A sheet of responsibilities for dog owners could be provided when we
pay for our dog licence. The parks board did neglect to tell us how much the fencing, labour, maintenance and the cost of the land would be for the new parks. How much is a playground worth? We need more parks for people to share with our loved ones. We still have people living on the streets. We do not even have garbage pickup. We have high taxes. If we are looking for more ways to save money, I recommend stopping the provision of coffee, tea, muffins
and bottled water during meetings at city hall. Just 226 people took part and made comments regarding the new dog parks. That is less then one percent of the population of Maple Ridge. Thousands of people signed a petition to stop a road through Upper Maple Ridge Park, destine to be a dog park now, and that was back when all the environmental groups worked together. Make transit taxation fair for all Editor, The News: The biggest problem with the TransLink referendum is that it doesn’t address the most important principle of taxation, which is fairness. Is it fair that residents of Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge pay more taxes to TransLink that residents of Vancouver when we receive a small fraction of the services they receive? Before TransLink asks for more money, it has to institute a fair system of taxation.
We currently pay more in taxes because of the fuel tax of $0.17 per litre, as we generally have to drive far more than Vancouver residents. We also pay a bridge toll that they seldom pay. The only fair tax system would be to eliminate the fuel tax and generate all taxes needed through the property tax system. Each housing unit (including suites) would be assessed a standard amount based on the TransLink service available
to them. Vancouver would get the highest assessment as it receives the most service. Residents in east Maple Ridge would get a small assessment as they receive very little service. No referendum should occur until the question of fairness is addressed. Something for our new mayors to work on. Bob Smith Pitt Meadows

Elk thriving in Upper Pitt Lake By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
The herd of Roosevelt elk which was reintroduced to the Upper Pitt Lake area almost 10 years ago have prospered to the point where the Environment Ministry allowed a small hunt of the herd for the first time this year. A herd of 23 was relocated into Upper Pitt Lake in January of 2005, as the Environment Ministry attempted to bring back a herd that was wiped out by over hunting in the early 1900s. “Now the population has expanded to the point where we could have a hunt, said conservation officer Todd Hunter. He estimated there are 67-75 animals in the Pitt Lake area now. Sport hunters were successful in taking two of the animals, with tickets issued on a limited entry hunting draw. Two other bulls were allocated to the Katzie First Nation, and so far they have been successful in
Elk were seen in the Kanaka Creek area in August 2013. taking one of the animals. “The Katzie were really happy to get the hunt back – it’s been 100 years since they’ve been able to hunt elk, said Hunter. He said the ministry believes that a limited hunt will not place
too much pressure on the populations. Its policies “Sustainable harvest is always good for population dynamics. Their life span in the wild is generally 12 to 15 years, so some of those original elk will be nearing the end of their natural life. The ministry also placed 20 Elk in the Indian River area in 2006, and in the Upper Stave Lake area in 2007. The relocated animals originally came from the Sunshine Coast and Powell River areas. In August of 2013 Roosevelt Elk were photographed on the Lougheed Highway, near Kanaka Creek. They have been frequently sighted in the Albion flats area, and environment ministry biologists also took that as a good sign that reintroduced elk are thriving. Roosevelt are the largest species of elk in North America, and the largest adult bulls can stand 1.5m at the shoulder, and weigh up to 500 kg.

Ridge council helping car dealer move pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
Maple Ridge has approved, in principle, providing water and sewer services to the planned new location of Maple Ridge Chrysler in Pitt Meadows. But it wants to make sure it doesn’t get stuck with the costs and none of the benefits of the business which would be located just over the border at about 200th Street in Pitt Meadows on Lougheed Highway. Because of the location of the new dealership, tucked in beside the on-ramp to the Golden Ears Bridge, there are no Pitt Meadows services. Instead, utilities have to be extended from one of Maple Ridge’s western suburbs. Maple Ridge staff and council though want other issues solved first. The new business would add to traffic on Lougheed Highway, said Coun. Bob Masse. “I just have a lot of concerns. And 20 years from now, will Maple Ridge have to replace the infrastructure at its cost? Masse asked. Staff said no, adding that a utilities agreement would ensure Pitt Meadows foots the bill. A staff report also said a floodplain assessment must be done to assess any impacts on groundwater and overland
flows of water on nearby properties. A stormwater plan also should be developed while a transportation study should look
at pedestrian and vehicular access to the site. Landscaping should include buffering of the site to minimize noise impacts on the homes
nearby, while there should be no use of outdoor public address systems while light pollution should be minimized.

Parents lobby for immersion rebuilding phase. “The program needs to be nurtured and allowed to rebuild,” said Park. She added that the program should be targeted to Grade 5 parents, and noted that the information link on the board’s website was not working. “To parents accessing the site, it looked like the program had been completely cancelled,” she said. She thinks the program has been affected by a lack of information. She noted that even New Westminster, with less than half the district enrolment as Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, has a French immersion pro-
Local school district could be only one in region without late entry By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
A group of parents is lobbying the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board to keep late French immersion in the district. If the program is cancelled, School District No. 42 will be the only one in the Metro region not to offer late French immersion – a program which allows students to start studying in both of Canada’s official languages in Grade 5. Owen Smith and Van-
essa Park, representing a group of 19 parents who want to see the program continue, argued that late French Immersion has not received adequate support from the board. Smith noted that in spring 2014, the program was cancelled due to lack of enrolment, the board saying it would return in 2015-2016, if there were enough students. He asked that the board allow the program to run in 2015-2016 if it has 20 or more students – saying the program needs a

Const. Amanda Harnett will be part-time spokesperson for the detachment, backing up Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. Harnett previously was spokesperson for the

They also argued it should be part of a French immersion school, so teachers are not isolated. And they brought video presentations from students, saying that the program is important to them, and allowed them to become fully bilingual. Board chair Mike Murray apologized for the website errors and said they wold be corrected.

Glass Menagerie at theatre in country
So much of a story comes from its tone. For Reg Parks and the members of Theatre in the Country, their latest work strikes the right note with one of the most critically acclaimed titles. Tennessee Williams described his classic play, The Glass Menagerie, as an intimate memory play, pulled from the reflections of the narrator, Tom Winfield. As a poet, the lead character, Tom tolls in a shoe warehouse to support his mother, Amanda, and sister, Laura. The semi-autobiography play by Williams catapulted to fame as one of America’s great playwrights. The Glass Menagerie debuted on Broadway in 1945 and won the New York Drama Critics Circle award. The play runs from Jan. 22 to 24 at 7 p.m. at Theatre in the Country Dinner Theatre, 9975 - 272 St. in Maple Ridge. There is also a 1 p.m. slot. “The acting is incredibly strong, and the venue only helps to draw the audience in,” Parks said. • For tickets you can call 604-259-9737 or visit www.theatreinthecountry.com.

Chevrolet expands its electrifying portfolio with the Bolt EV Concept. With a range of more than 300 kilometres, this all-electric stylish crossover is aimed for the masses, not just the select few. “While it’s still a concept, pricing for this type of vehicle will be in the $30,000 range. Not cheap, but certainly attainable. It even allows you to use a smartphone to perform as the key fob.” Acura is showing off the return of its simply beautiful NSX sports car to the market. The Porsche-loving Jerry Seinfeld was flown in to add some celebrity power but there was no — because this $150,000-plus super car speaks loudly for itself. It will be powered by a new Honda V6 mated to a ninespeed dual clutch transmission, assisted greatly by three electric motors — one for each of the front wheels and another to add torque while the turbos get up to speed. Interesting that Honda should be getting back into F1 racing; now it features hybrid power plants! Ford is teasing showgoers with a stunning new 600-horsepower Ford GT, which will more than likely have a price sticker similar to that of the NSX. The Infiniti Q60 concept’s premiere appearance was somewhat overshadowed by the aforementioned machines in the media here. However, Alfonso Albaisa, the Infiniti executive director of design, delivered a passionate description of the high-performance sports coupe that will come to market within the next year, with a price tag somewhat lower than the Ford and Acura products. NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT
Delta Rise lives up to its name…
Raise your expectations: A residential experience where the sky’s the limit The Delta area is moving up and quickly being recognized as a desirable place to live – so why not do it in the sky? Picture a curving tower that overlooks sprawling views of the Lower Mainland and you will begin to understand why buyers are excited about Delta Rise by Marshall Mountain Homes and ITC Construction Group. At 37 storeys high, it is the tallest tower in North Delta and offers class, convenience and security in an urban environment. The large decks, expansive outdoor living spaces and oversized windows capitalize on the use of natural light and an airy, open setting. The decks are two to three times the size of a typical high rise, and although the sizes vary on each unit, the large outdoor space is big enough for homeowners to live the life they want. While inside, the open-concept kitchens come equipped with a stainless steel appliance package and polished quartz countertops, perfect for cooking up a meal and entertaining guests. Each floor plan is designed with every day needs in mind and come in a variety of configurations in one-, two and three-bedroom plans. Prices start at $204,900 for the one-bedroom, $242,900 for the twobedroom and the three-bedrooms starting at $412,900 which include two parking spaces! Beyond the feel of spacious luxury, OTEZS Project Marketing’s Bill Szeto says that Delta Rise offers “lock and go living” that allows homeowners to have a great home, plus safety and security to take vaca-
tions without worrying while they are away. “There is also one level living, meaning ease of access, no stairs and smart, open floor plans, amazing views that are unobstructed and substantial amenities.” Some of those on-site amenities include a fitness facility, library, and business workspace including guest wi-fi, an entertainment lounge and theatre. The building also has a rooftop courtyard with a playground, Zen garden and plenty of other green spaces. However, when it comes to features that make these homes stand out, it’s all about the soaring exteriors. “There are no other buildings that will have this many suites with incredible views,” says Szeto. The surrounding neighborhood has plenty of essential services within walking distance, including grocery stores, medical buildings, the new North Delta Community Park and Rec Centre, Sungod Community Centre, restaurants and pubs, shopping centres and schools. Immediately downstairs, there will also be a few businesses, including a coffee shop. When you choose Delta Rise, you are choosing to live an upscale life with extra green efforts in a pedestrian-friendly community. The full 2-bedroom show home is open Monday-Thursday from 1pm - 6pm and on weekends from 12pm - 5pm at 11906 80th Ave Visit the Delta Rise website for more information and housing details: deltarise.ca

problems. Choosing high-quality materials and products for your basement reno that can be adapted to changing needs and abilities as you age is a wise approach. Things like including solid backing around bathtubs and shower stalls to allow installation of grab bars for later in life can help save time and money down the road. Also look to use low pollutant-emitting materials such as flooring, cabinets, counter tops, paint, cement, grout, sealants and
caulking. Choosing recycled or certified forest products for floors, cabinets, tiles, drywall and mill work will help reduce the environmental footprint of your reno. Wherever possible, use locally sourced, and lightly processed products and materials. And try to decide where and how you will reuse, recycle or properly dispose of old or discarded fixtures, cabinets and materials before you begin your basement renovation. Plan ahead to avoid expensive rework and try
to predict and address any potential problems or concerns at the beginning of your basement renovation. Choose a classic, design that is timeless and won’t go out of style for many years can help reduce future costs and renos. Most homeowners renovate their basements to increase usable space. Before you begin your basement reno project, think about your family’s needs. The reno may be to create a family room, laundry room, game room, guest bedroom, bathroom or a rental unit with a small kitchen. Think long-term when deciding on your project’s outcome and a design, so you can easily transform rooms later in life. It’s important that a detailed plan of what you want your finished basement to look like is developed to ensure you have a good idea of how it will all fit together. Think about the possibilities as it is far easier to make changes in the plan than it is when walls have been put up. To help make a basement is green as possible, identify whether your basement has moisture issues and correct them before renovating. Moisture problems can damage or destroy materials and finishes and possibly ruin your renovation investment. Use moisture-resistant materials and finishes to prevent future moisture problems and discourage mold growth. To improve a basement’s energy efficiency, and reduce monthly utility bills, add insulation to walls and floor wherever possible, as well as exposed cold and hot water pipes. Install high-efficiency Energy Star-rated appliances, windows and lights and seal leaks in the forced-air system ducts. And ensure you good air circulation and ventilation in any rooms added in the basement reno. Test your basement for radon, methane and other soil gases before you begin in earnest. This helps create a healthy and safe environment and helps you cost-effectively repair, as part of your renovation, any potential

Best in B.C. battle for Scotties title Golden Ears teammates clash in opening draw By Neil Corbett sports@mapleridgenews.com
The hand of fate got the 2015 B.C. Scotties off to an exciting start, as the two skips from last year’s championship met in a rematch in the opening random draw on Wednesday night. Kesa Van Osch and Kelly Scott, the two skips from last year’s final, went head-to-head in the first draw of the tournament. Each rink also has two curlers who curl out of the host club. Van Osch is out of the Nanaimo Curling Centre, and her rink features second Trysta Vandale and lead Kelsey Steiger of Golden Ears. Scott is out of the Kelowna Curling Club, but has third Shannon Aleksic and fifth Kristen Recksiedler of the local club. The four Golden Ears Winter Club women curl together as a team on Monday nights in Maple Ridge. Scott won the opener by a score of 5-4, on her last rock. “We had a very close game against Scott – she had to draw the pin for the win,” said Vandale. “So as much as losing is never fun, losing that way is not so bad. She deserved the win. She had to make a really tough shot.” “Kesa being last year’s champ, and Scott, obviously – they both

The four locals are “best buds,” but this weekend is about getting to the Canadian championship. “We all want to go to the Scotties – and maybe if we could do it together one year that would be
amazing,” said Vandale. “But right now we can’t. Someone’s got to win, and someone’s got to lose. We all know that as friends. “If they win, and they beat us in the final, I’ll be super disappointed, but at the same time so excited for Shannon and Kristen to have that chance.” “We’re best friend and that al-
ways wins out in the end.” Recksiedler said the two rinks with “targets” on them will face a lot of stiff competition. “It is a really close – there’s a lot of great teams out here,” she said. “It’s really good competition. You can’t expect to go undefeated.” The event is taking place at Golden Ears Winter Club.
Team Sivertson, contains three of the curlers that won gold alongside Van Osch last year. The team is now skipped by Dailene Sivertson and curls out of the Victoria Curling Centre. The field contains several other experienced teams including Team Knezevic who were runners up at the 2013 B.C. Scotties. The rink curls out of Prince George Golf and Curling Club and Howe Sound Curling Club, and is skipped by Patti Knezevic. Team Gushulak qualified as Canadian Team Ranking System winners. The team from Vancouver Curling Club is skipped by Diane Gushulak. Team Wark, which represents Victoria Curling Centre and Juan de Fuca Curling Centre, won the A-event at the first open playdown. Skip is Sarah Wark. In the first draw they will face Team Russett who will be making their debut at the B.C. Scotties. The team from Kamloops Curling Club is skipped by Amanda Russett. The field is rounded out by Team Lewis from Royal City Curling Club. The rink is skipped by Kristy Lewis. The team which takes the provincial crown will go on to represent B.C. at the 2015 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw, Sask., Feb. 4-22. • The schedule and results are available at www.playdowns. com/ under the Curl BC tab.

Good hearing, poor comprehension? The number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newlydeveloped hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear. A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the highfrequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear. The person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not

and speech comprehension analysis is done. Where inner-ear damage is present, a software program analyzes the difference relative to normal hearing. These values are then input into the new Venture hearing chip in the Audéo V, which precisely takes into account and balances the frequency range of the person being tested. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation.
Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing chip that restores speech comprehension, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. Hornets win Island tourney

17th ANNUAL
2014 2015
Sports@mapleridgenews.com
The Maple Ridge Christian Hornets senior boys basketball team won the 10th annual Nairn Howe Memorial Tournament on Salt Spring Island over the weekend. Last year the Single A Hornets lost to the host Gulf Island Secondary Scorpions by 13 points in the final, and they got a measure of revenge in a championship game rematch. The Hornets jumped out to an early 23-17 after the first quarter. The second quarter was intense, physical and stayed close with the Hornets up 3934 at the half. The second half told a different story as the Hornets played with poise, pulling away from the Scorpions 59-44 after the third quarter. They went on to win 81-48. That ended the home team’s three consecutive tourney championships. Tyson Schoefield was selected player of the game and Nicolas Samchek was voted the 2015 Nairn Howe Award recipient by his team mates. Over the tournament, Justin Robinson led all team mates scoring with 105 points in four games. Nic Samchek had 64 points and also averaged 16 hard fought rebounds – 64 for the weekend. Hornets centre Jordan Ellingson was ill all week, and missed the first game and most of the next two. Be he was dominant in the weekend final scoring 29 of his tournament 43 points, and pulling down eight offensive rebounds.
