KITIMAT - The prospects for liquefied natural gas (LNG) may be good, but not that good, according to a report from Harvard University’s Belfer Center. The report, called Falling Short: A Reality Check for Global LNG Exports and authored by associate professor Leonardo Maugeri, is, naturally, heavily focused on the United States’ LNG prospects, but Canada is included in his projections. And long story short, Maugeri is more confident in Nova Scotia-based Goldboro LNG in adding to LNG exports by 2020 for Canada than he is with west coast-based projects. “It has already secured a long-term customer (German E.on) for 20 years, starting in 2019, but had not received an export license as of November 2014. This is also the only scheme whose selling price formula is not oil-linked,” he writes in the report. On the west coast, “To circumvent some of the problems affecting British Columbia, Canadian natural gas developers could send their natural gas to the US west coast, where it could be liquefied and shipped to Asia. But the fate of Oregon’s LNG schemes seems very uncertain in this decade,” writes Maugeri in his paper, titled Falling Short: A Reality Check for Global LNG Exports. Maugeri’s paper, however, does seem to put U.S. potential for LNG exports at a notably higher level

than other countries. Australia, he writes, has the worst business case globally. As well Canada, he says, “will likely by the hardest hit by the new ‘chill wind’ blowing over LNG projects.” Meanwhile he writes that the U.S. shale gas revolution “will supply relatively cheap gas for future US LNG export schemes.” even as LNG growth will fall short of expectations, he anticipates. He referred to all British Columbian LNG proposals as being planned for greenfield sites — that is sites that have no infrastructure and have not been developed before — however that’s not true for the LNG Canada proposal which owns the former Methanex site in Kitimat. This project is majority-owned by Shell Canada and it has lined up minority Asian partners who also are LNG clients. Overall though the report doesn’t say LNG is a dead market. His conclusion states that “Even a prudent and skeptical view of the evolving global gas market cannot help but recognize that soon the world will witness the largest increase ever of LNG export capacity.” As for Canada, though, under his conclusion, he states, “Also the yet-onpaper Canadian and Mozambican potential LNG exports seem to be too expensive to cope with the current market situation. This is likely to freeze their materialization till the next decade.”

KITIMAT - A University of Northern B.C. economics professor says people should be cautious, rather than optimistic, about LNG in 2015. UNBC’s Paul Bowles was responding to minister of natural gas development Rich Coleman’s year-opening statements saying 2015 will be the year. Bowles, however, says Coleman essentially has to push for a final investment decision (FID) on a project for 2015 or things will get hard for the government’s predictions. “He pretty much has to say it’s this year, or his targets for 2020 won’t be met,” he said. Yet ‘cautious’ is the word Bowles would use when thinking of LNG prospects in 2015. “He’s [Coleman] on one end of the optimism spectrum. The government brought in its tax regime which was designed to be very competitive to get companies to commit, but that hasn’t happened,” he said. “Global energy markets are in turmoil at the moment, which nobody predicted. It’s unclear what what’s going to happen to the price of oil which will affect competitive fuels like LNG.” He added “It would a brave person to make a prediction about what will happen to the price of oil prices over the year and there-

fore the natural gas prices over the year, which will determine how much investment takes place... Rich Coleman must have a better crystal ball than most of the rest of us.” It’s not an entirely pessimistic outlook for the industry though. He does agree partially with some of Coleman’s ideas, such as that drilling in the northeast, and pipeline agreements made over the past couple of years, can mean there’s confidence in the industry. But Bowles only sees those as small parts of the larger picture. “That shows it’s still a possibility, but the difference between a possibility and a guarantee is quite a big gap,” he said. And for pipeline agreements themselves, he said you only need one person not signing up to throw a wrench in everything else. “You can’t build 60 per cent of a pipeline,” he said. “Any one legal challenge would have consequences.” B.C., he also says, has challenges due to its geography causing any projects here to be high cost compared to other environments. Coleman in his LNG outlook also repeated the government’s belief that the industry will lead to 100,000 jobs, but that’s another area Bowles says could be too optimistic. “That’s very high,” he said. “They tend to count both what

they call direct and indirect jobs on that.” He adds, “That’s still a very optimistic number. I’ve never seen a full justification for that number.” In Coleman’s outlook, he said that the government is anticipating that companies will begin making their LNG decisions this year. “After three years of planning, we anticipate British Columbia’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry will take flight in 2015 as leading proponents make final decisions to move forward,” said Coleman, in a written statement. Kitimat-based projects were among his list of six projects which have received provincial environmental approval. “We now have 18 proposals for LNG export operations. Provincial Environmental Assessment Certificates have been issued for six LNG projects - the Westcoast Connector Gas Transmission pipeline, the Pacific NorthWest LNG export facility in Port Edward, the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline, the Pacific Trail Pipeline, the Kitimat LNG project in Bish Cove, and Coastal GasLink Pipeline.” “While the interest has been tremendous,” he continued, “our goal remains to meet the BC Jobs Plan target of three LNG facilities by 2020. This would increase natural gas production and provincial revenues.”

Rupert port expansion program could come sooner than later

PRINCE RUPERT - The long-rumoured Phase II expansion of Fairview Terminal could be coming sooner rather than later. “I think one can anticipate some type of very positive announcement some time in the first quarter of 2015,” said Prince Rupert Port Authority president and CEO Don Krusel in a year-end interview with the Northern View. “It’s inevitable, you just have to look at the numbers.” Fairview Terminal has seen growth every year since it opened in 2007, pushing the terminal close to capacity. “There is room, but it’s getting tight. We don’t know what the ultimate capacity is, but the terminal operator thinks it is north of 750,000 TEUs so we still have well over 100,000 TEUs of capacity. But it does demonstrate that expansion is necessary,” said Krusel. “As a port communi-

ty, we can’t sustain this kind of growth without expansion moving forward. We have had the road, rail, utility corridor and I can see for the next 18 months having the Fairview container terminal expansion moving forward.” Following a year that saw overall tonnage through the Port of Prince Rupert decline, driven by a drop in coal that offset record years at both Fairview Terminal and Prince Rupert Grain, Krusel said there are a number of possibilities that could make 2015 another great year. “We would see an expansion of Fairview container terminal being initiated, it would be nice to see a final investment decision by one of the LNG facilities moving forward and the new project cargo facility is now basically completed, though not fully commissioned, and we expect to see volume moving through it starting in the first quarter of 2015. That will be another form of diversification. We would also

see continued growth in container traffic through Fairview and, depending on the crop year, we hope to see Prince Rupert Grain continue to show growth,” he said, noting the year will not be without challenges. “I think the challenges will continue to be with coal and the price of oil and its impact on the global and Canadian economies, which could have an impact on various initiatives in Prince Rupert and other commodity prices. We have to watch international markets to see how that unfolds ... the Chinese economy is slowing and moving from 14 per cent to 16 per cent growth to seven per cent. That is still growth, but it is slowing and that is bringing down the demand for commodities which was driving much of our growth. We don’t know what that is going to mean for us.” In the long-term, Krusel said some of the goals of the port authority include increasing waterfront access and securing land to further

develop its gateway. “One of the common comments we hear is that as the port expands, there is concerns in the community that access to the waterfront is being taken away. We recognize that is a concern and it is a very important objective to address that concern ... we are working hard to make Prince Rupert a waterfront access-focussed community and we will be focussing our efforts and investments in ensuring the public does have access to the waterfront,” he said. “We’re continuing to work with the provincial government to see if we can unlock some provincial crown lands for the expansion for intermodal activity and a logistics park. That has been a major initiative and will continue to be one; the need for the Prince Rupert gateway to expand into logistics services is quite high and that requires land. It is something that we need to work with some of our government stakeholders to unlock.”

Flu season deemed to be a mild one across the Northwest By Martina Perry

PRINCE RUPERT - While other parts of the province are experiencing high volumes of influenza cases, the Northern Health region is having a mild flu season. “Last year at this time there were lines of residents waiting for their flu shots,” Dr. William Osei, Northern Health medical health officer, said. So far this season there have

been 21 confirmed cases of influenza in the Northern Health, compared to 47 in the same time period of last year. Dr. Osei said in the Northwest area of the region, which includes Prince Rupert and Haida Gwaii, there has only been two confirmed cases, neither in Prince Rupert. There have been 10 cases in the Northeast and nine in the Northern Interior. But Dr. Osei said it’s hard to determine the true number of influenza cases as many who are

infected stay home and treat themselves. The flu season usually peaks in early-January, with the second peak occurring four weeks later. While the H1N1 influenza strain was the most common last season, this year there have been more cases of H3N2 around B.C. Symptoms of both strains are the same, but Dr. Osei said H1N1 is more infectious. The H3N2 virus mutated after the most recent vaccine was creat-

ed, so it doesn’t offer full protection against the strain. “We didn’t hit all [three components in the vaccination] that we intended to hit,” Dr. Osei explained. “Fortunately for us we haven’t had the type of widespread transmission that the Lower Mainland and other provinces are seeing,” he said, noting the flu hasn’t been an issue in northern long-term care facilities. Jonathon Dyck, Northern Health spokesperson, said the au-

thority has a sufficient supply of flu vaccines across the region. “If there is a community that is seeing a shortage of the flu vaccine or higher demand than another community, what we do is we move the vaccine around community to community to make sure people who would like a flu shot are able to access it,” Dyck said. The number of people who were vaccinated by public health alone within the region was 16,453 as of Jan. 3.

SQUAMISH - B.C.’s Environment Assessment Office has begun its review of a liquefied natural gas export facility near Squamish, and a large-volume gas pipeline from Coquitlam to supply it. FortisBC has applied to twin its existing 10-inch diameter gas pipeline to the former Woodfibre pulp mill with a 24-inch line that would supply gas to load 40 tankers of LNG per year for export to Asia. The existing pipeline right-of-way and an idle industrial site with barge sites put the Woodfibre LNG project at the front of the pack for the B.C. government’s push to develop an LNG export industry, with opera-

tion to begin as early as spring 2017. Woodfibre is smaller than most proposals for the Kitimat and Prince Rupert areas, which continue to study the cost of much longer pipelines from northeast B.C. gas fields. The Singaporebased investors behind Woodfibre LNG plan to use BC Hydro electricity and gas supplied by FortisBC’s existing network that supplies residential

and industrial customers around the province. The 180-day assessment period began this week with acceptance of the pipeline and plant applications. EAO public open houses for the LNG plant are scheduled for 4-8 p.m. Jan. 28 at the CN Roundhouse in Squamish, 5-9 p.m. Jan. 29 at Caulfield Elementary School in West

Vancouver and 4-8 p.m. Jan. 30 at Bowen Island Community School. The existing pipeline starts from Eagle Mountain in north Coquitlam, runs northwest to Squamish and continues across the Sunshine Coast and Texada Island to supply gas customers in Powell River and Vancouver Island, including Victoria.

Scam tried in Terrace TERRACE - Two angry phone calls from a man claiming his vehicle was scratched in an accident were likely a telemarketing scam. Terrace RCMP reported that the person who was called mentioned that the police should be involved which led to the call being cut short Jan. 14. A check of the phone number led to the discovery of it being a discontinued number and a business phone number, said police. “Police suspect this was a telemarketing scam using spoof software and if the phone call continued, the caller would have asked for some monetary compen-

Chamber seeks changes to flight numbers By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - After commissioning a report on the impact of limited capacity aboard the Digby Island Ferry, representatives from the Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce outlined the next steps during the Jan. 13 meeting of Port Edward council. Given that new buses are unable to access the ferry due to issues with the dock, chamber president John Farrell said that is next on the group’s agenda. “The next stage we’re going to do is determine the cost of either renovating the existing dock structures or fabricating new ones. That is the next piece because before we can even talk about ferries we need to talk about the docks,” he said, noting the same industry stakeholders that contributed to the ferry study will be at the table to examine the docks. “The whole point is to cost share this exercise, so it will be hiring an engineering consultant to do a feasibility study and cost analysis. Then it is decision time. It will go back to the table and the proof will be in the pudding in terms of how much each proponent needs to spend in terms of infrastructure ... one of the things we want to do to keep this cheap is that the Prince Rupert Port Authority is using its in-house engineers to help work with the consultant to look at different scenarios.” During the meeting, Coun. Dan Franzen expressed his desire to see a change to not only the

ferry run but how the airport opens itself to vehicle traffic. “You definitely need to go with the new docks and with Tobey Point. You have to get rid of that long run. The way I see it that ferry should run one hour from one side and keep going back and forth,” he said of the ferry run. “We should have a big parking lot on the other side with meters just like they have in Terrace so you can take your car there and park. There it is $6 per day and it is full all the time. The cost to get over there if you want to take your car, $40, is too much. You could make that up in that parking fee.” In addition to issues surrounding the dock and the ferry, chamber vice-president Rosa Miller said the schedule in and out of Prince Rupert needs to change. “In preparation for tonight’s meeting I went to the Air Canada website to try and book a flight from Prince Rupert to Vancouver on Jan. 28, returning Jan. 29. I thought that was a Wednesday and Thursday, the quietest days. I also did the same for Terrace. In Terrace there are five flights departing from Terrace starting at 6:00 in the morning and the last returning at 11 p.m. From Prince Rupert there are two, the first departing at at 10:45 a.m. and returning at 7:50 p.m. If you take those numbers and run them, flying out of Terrace will double your opportunity window in terms of business you could do in Vancouver or business you could do in the north. “Cottage” goes up at Terrace’s Suwilaawks By Margaret Speirs THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - A former staff member at Suwilaawks Community School will be remembered and known for her passion for literacy by students for years to come. The school library was renovated to be a warm welcoming place for students, parents and the community thanks to money left to the school from former teacher Christine Foster, who passed away nearly two years ago. Christine’s Cottage is located just inside the library doors and is open for students to use for a quiet place to read. The money was also used to install shelves on one wall so books could be displayed with their front covers facing out and the library was painted a warm shade of red, which staff found out later was Foster’s favourite colour. “We knew her passion was engaging early learners in reading and we brainstormed and made the library a warm place to cuddle up and read,” says principal Pam Kawinsky. “Everybody loves it all the way to Grade 6.” Foster was principal at the school from 2000 to 2003 and taught at the school as well before moving on to be assistant superintendent in the school board office here. Her focus was always on literacy. The idea was to make the library a more welcoming place where students, and adults too, can curl up and read a book and for the library to become the hub of the school. The library and Christine’s Cottage were unveiled at a mini grand opening December 1 with the school’s drummers drumming it in, and some of Christine’s closest friends and her husband were there too. Classes from kindergarten to Grade 6 get their own special times to enjoy the cottage, sit inside it and talk or read. The library was also opened up to make more space by removing some tables. So now students who like to read in a closed area can sit in the

cottage to read and those who like to be out in the open can sit on a couch or the floor and read, says Clarke. “Yesterday at lunch, one child was over on a chair and another was on the stands sitting in the corner by a stack of books,” says Clarke, adding it was so quiet in there you could hear a pin drop. Another child was laying upside down and reading, she adds. Also with the addition of a few risers, a story pit can be formed for storytelling, says Kawinsky. The school’s Christmas concerts were held in the library plus choir practice and music programs have moved in too. Strong Start, a program for kids from birth to age five, also takes place in the library now. And some girls asked if they could start a Polly Pocket club after several of the toys were donated to the school. The Lego Lab right off the library is a big hit with girls and boys too. It’s been placed in what was a prep room and then a storage room before being cleaned out for the lab. Students’ literacy skills are improved just by following instructions and talking about what they’re putting together in the lab, says Kawinsky. In the future, a mural will be added on a wall and more of these bookshelves will be added in future so more books can be displayed by their front covers. “We hope we captured the spirit of Christine. She was an amazing lady and will be remembered every time a child flips through the pages of a book in the warmth and comfort of Christine’s Cottage,” says Kawinsky. Suwilaawks Community School has undertaken a variety of programs, including ones involving sports, to involve not only students but their parents as well. The school is a blend of what was once ET Kenney Primary and Clarence Michiel Elementary schools located in the horseshoe area of Terrace, B.C.

CHSS bringing Pirates of Penzance to the Lester Centre stage THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - It’s a comic opera about a young man faced with a hard decision; The woman he loves or the gang of pirates he has called family all of his life? This is the predicament in a new version of Gillbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, which Charles Hays Secondary School (CHSS) students will present three consecutive performances of later this month. Artistic director Alison O’Toole and musical director Jeff Saunders have been working with students for the production since October. The Pirates of Penzance is a different style of musical theatre than past CHSS productions and is much more music-heavy. “The tempos are very quick in some of the songs and the words come very fast, so it’s been a challenge for the actors,” O’Toole said, noting students have progressed wonderfully. “From the band’s perspective, it’s quite difficult music ... but the musicians have been working really hard,” said Saunders, noting a number of experienced Prince Rupert musicians are part of the pit band. “They sound professional,” added O’Toole. The Pirates of Penzance tells the story of Frederic (Daelan Calder) who is released from his apprenticeship to a band of pirates, including the Pirate King (Ryan Wightman) and Samual (Blake Foxall), his lieutenant. “He is off to lead a respectable life which would involve him exterminating the pirates who have been his friends and family since he was a young boy,” said O’Toole. With the pirate maid Ruth (Hannah Komadina) being the only woman he’s ever seen before, Frederic quickly falls in love with the daughter of Major-General Stanley (Jacob Skerritt), Mabel (Jordan Weir), after returning to civilization. But complications arise, leaving Frederic divided between his loyalties to the pirate band and the father of his new love-interest. “He’s faced with a difficult choice,” said Saunders. “He is torn between the woman he loves and his obligation or duties to the pirates,” added O’Toole. Tyers said Buday’s family has been working on a park dedication in Atlin, located on Teslin Lake, and hopes the dedication would still be pursued. Hart responded that the RCMP still support that dedication as well. A plaque bearing Buday’s name is located at the entrance to the Terrace RCMP detachment.

Gisela Woeste peacefully passed away in her home in Terrace, BC at the age of 84. She was predeceased by her father, mother, ex-husband Eugen, and her son Peter. Mom will be forever loved, treasured and missed by daughters Petra (Brian) and Karla (Robert). In keeping with Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service held. Robert Hartley Hill

May 8, 1942 - December 21, 2014 Robert Hartley Hill, also fondly known as Abbey and Bob, 72, went to his heavenly home on December 21, 2014 after a valiant battle with a long illness with his wife Violet at his side. His devotion too Violet and his family, along with his firm belief in God supported him in his struggles and ultimately gave him peace. Robert was born to Marjorie Hill (nee Robinson) from Hartley Bay and the late Ernest Matthew Hill from Kitkatla, on May 8, 1942, in Hartley Bay BC. Robert Hartley Hill is survived by his wife, Violet Hill nee Boudreau; his sons Ron, Darren and Todd Wilson; his daughters Jo-Lynda Hill and Marji Basso; His mother Marjorie Hill; brothers Ernest Goodlet and Clare Hill; his sisters Violet Adams and Doris Bertrand; eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded by his father, Ernie Hill; his grandparents Violet and Ambrose Robinson and Matthew and Clara Hill and his brother in law Julius Boudreau. Robert was immersed in his culture and the church. Both would be his lifelong support that made him an active leader not only for the Gitga’at Nation but for all Nations that needed support and a voice. He was an elder in the church and was devoted to Hartley Bay choir. He spent many years as a heavy duty mechanic and loved to work on boats. He was also the President of the Tsimshian Tribal Council for many years. He was the voice of the Tsimshian Nation. Robert had many friends that he met throughout his life's journey and built lifelong relationships with them based on respect and “a matter of fact” honesty. Robert was blessed by being able to move people with the gift of speech. Whether it was in Sm’algyx (his cultural language) or modern day English his words would penetrate your heart. He was able to walk in both worlds side by side and did it with honour and pride. Above all this, Robert was an educator at heart. He always had time to answer a question or solve a problem, no matter how big or small it was. He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at peace with his creator. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

JOB SUMMARY Reporting to the Director of Finance the Human Resources Office is responsible developing and delivering human resource strategies that support the Kitselas First Nation (KFN) government goals and objectives. The Human Resources Officer is expected to contribute at both a strategic and operational level in order to identify HR priorities and recommend appropriate solutions. This position will oversee all HR administration and operation within the KFN government.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the successful candidate, in partnership with NTA Board of Directors, employees, communities, and government entities and funding agencies, will have responsibility for providing leadership, direction and overall management of the operating affairs of the NTA, including the planning, financial, program, community, government, administration, referral, research/data management, and reporting affairs. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Human Resource Responsibilities • Provide strategic recommendations to the senior management team in the area of human resources; • Oversee all human resource operations and administration within the KFN government; • Assist managers and directors with the implementation and administration of KFN Human Resource Policies and Procedures Manual, in addition to any other policies and procedures that may be applicable; • Lead and manage the delivery of all full-cycle recruitment, selection and retention process; • Manage and monitor the performance evaluation system and process; • Develop and maintain a comprehensive system for organizational charts, job descriptions, employment contracts, and employee records; • Develop, implement and maintain a system to record and manage all benefit administration, leave requests, status changes and pay increases; • Oversee the compilation and management of staff attendance and leave reports for CEO and • Directors; • Identify, plan, organize and implement training initiatives for both employees and workforce development clients; • Prepare and present reports to the CEO and Council as required; • Develop, implement, educate, train and enforce Human Resource policies; • Develop succession plans for all key position within the government structure; • Maintain and manage a comparative salary grid; • Assist with inventories and survey of skills and training plans for workforce development initiatives; • Liaise with the Workforce Development Coordinators to support training and educational initiatives for community members; and • Other related duties as required for the sound management of human resources. Health & Safety Representative Responsibilities • Participate in Safety Committee meetings; • Participate in the development of health and safety policies and programs; • Deal with matters raised by members of the committee or referred to by a workplace committee; • Participate in the development and monitoring of a program in the prevention of workplace hazards; • Provide health and safety education to employees; • Participate in inquiries, studies, investigations and inspections as needed; • Consider and expeditiously dispose of health and safety complaints; • Ensure that adequate records of work accidents, health hazards and the disposition of health and safety complaints are kept and regularly monitor this data; • Meet with senior management as necessary to address health and safety issues; • Participate in the implementation planning of changes that may affect occupational health and safety, including work processes and procedures, and, with the Safety Committee, participate in the implementation of these changes; • Inspect all or part of the workplace on a monthly basis, so that every part of the workplace is inspected at least once per year; and • Performs other related health and safety duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE • University Degree or College Diploma in Human Resource Management or related field; • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive Human Resources experience; • Experience in developing and organizing training programs; • Certified Human Resource Practitioner (CHRP) or willingness to obtain CHRP designation; • Extension knowledge in the principles and practices of Human Resource Management including: compensation, statistical concepts, job evaluation, performance evaluations, training and development, organizational development, recruitment and retention; • Knowledge of the BC Employment Standards Act, BC Human Rights Code, Canada Labour Code • and any other applicable federal and provincial labour laws in effect; • Must be able to function well in a fast-paced growing organization with multiple deadlines and priorities; • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; • High standards of ethics and confidentiality to handle sensitive information with an understanding of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act; • Relationship building skills with internal and external stakeholders; • Must possess cultural awareness and sensitivity; • Must be flexible and patient; • Valid driver’s license; • Leadership and supervisory experience an asset; • An understating of the north coast BC cultural and political environment; and • Previous experience working in a First Nations community and/or organization is preferred. Onion Lake ski trails are solid

PRINCE RUPERT - Well, they fixed their slow starts. After a year full of being down early and having to claw their way back, the Prince Rupert Rampage had one of their best periods of the season during the first frame of their last game of the 2014-15 season versus the Terrace River Kings and led the division-leading River Kings 1-0 at the end of one. And their start wasn’t the issue, but their special teams were in a 5-1 loss on Friday night at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre. “We had it going good in the first period ... in the third we kind of let up for a couple minutes and that’s the game right there,” said defenceman Marcus Atchison after the game. Jordan Weir opened the scoring on a bankedin rebound after a blistering Rampage shot dinged the post and Weir was able to collect the rebound for his career-high sixth goal of the season. Craig Munro and Ben Towner assisted. The Rampage (2-13-1), as they often have, skated with the River Kings (13-2-0) shift for shift, but on one particular man-advantage for the home team, two defensive breakdowns led to two shorthanded goals on the same penalty kill for Terrace in the third period to put the game out of reach for Rupert. Terrace’s go-ahead 2-1 goal early in the third period was scored by a streaking Jordan Peddle after Rupert committed a giveaway on the powerplay. Not a minute later and after furious shorthanded pressure by Terrace, Rupert’s Highway 16 rivals scored again on the Rampage’s starting netminder Devon Gerrits to make it 3-1. Two more goals by Chapen Leblond and Corbin Legros ended the game for the River Kings and after a stellar first two periods with some fine lateral movement and quick lowerbody pad saves, Gerrits was overwhelmed with the Terrace pressure in the third and made way for Jarrod Hildebrandt after the fifth goal against. Hildebrandt was solid the rest of the way including a couple sharp glove stops.

Highway 16 rivals, Prince Rupert and Terrace, faced off in their final game of the season last weekend. “We’ve got to work on more defensive coverage in practice and stuff like that,” said Atchison. “We don’t get very many players out at practices so it’s just like how do you practice if you don’t have enough guys,” the defenceman said, adding the team has two scheduled weekly practices Monday and Thursday nights and dryland training Monday and Wednesday. The power-play and penalty kill could use some extra work – something the team could rectify with more time spent on the special teams in practice. “It’s definitely hard [to get a rhythm on special teams],” said Atchison. The Central Interior Hockey League (CIHL) is made up of mostly volunteer coaches and players so teams may experience a lack of consistent attendance based on players and staff’s employment or other duties they may have. It’s something the team will have to address going forward into next year after finishing last in the league. “We’ve just got to work harder as a team and get together more often,” said Atchison. The game saw one of the season’s highest turnouts of fans on Friday, and they were loud in the third frame, even as the season was winding down on their team.

“The fans are amazing here in Rupert. They come and show support at our games win or lose. It’s awesome,” said the d-man. Just finishing his second year, Atchison is one of the most reliable and steady blueliners the Rampage have. He’s seen increased responsibility, often against the opposing team’s top lines and rarely takes a needless penalty. “Just more confidence all around the ice,” he said about his elevated game. Marcus came up through Prince Rupert’s midget ranks, just like a few other teammates and even current players like Cole Atchison, Marcus’ brother, and Austin Weir, Jordan’s brother, are making an impact in the senior men’s league, not even able to vote yet. “It’s not very often [kids come up that fast],” said Marcus. “They’re just so good, they come up to play with us - Cole and Austin.” Tyler Bates made his return to the squad after a few games away and with the core of the team returning next year, Marcus hopes the team will be even more competitive in the seasons to come. “We’re a new team right now and we’re growing and we’re just starting out kind of. A lot of young players coming up so in a couple years I think we’re going to have a solid team.”

KITIMAT - The Kitimat Ice Demons may have missed the playoffs this year, but that doesn’t mean they had no more steam left with one win against the league’s Coy Cup champions the Smithers Steelheads. The Demons faced Smithers on January 10 and 11 on home ice. The first match of the weekend would go to Smithers 7-4. It was nothing but Smithers points for the first period, with the first just three minutes from the start by Wyatt Vanderheyden. Adam DeVries would also claim two goals against Kitimat in that same period. The Demons held it together in the second pe-

riod, letting no Smithers goal in, and even adding one to the scoreboard for them, by Derek Wakita at 15:54. The Demons earned three more goals in the third, which were matched by three by Smithers as well. When the Demons and Steelheads hit the ice the next day, it was a race to the 8-7 finish for the home team, and the Demons pushed hard to make up the difference in the third period, with five goals starting 47 seconds in. The Steelheads’ Brendan DeVries tried to equalize the score in the final minute of gameplay but that one goal, at the end, wouldn’t edge them to 8-8 and the Demons would win, despite a strong second period from Smithers with three goals against Kitimat’s one. The Demons opened up the scoring a minute

and a half into the first with a goal by Nick Markowsky, and a second goal by Terry Whelan just over seven minutes in. The Steelheads took the majority of the penalties, earning 24 minutes with eight infractions, while the Demons were comparative angels with just four minutes on two infractions. The Ice Demons were hosted in Smithers last weekend, on January 17, for the Demons’ final game for the season and lost 10-5. The season went to January 18, when the Smithers Steelheads hosted the Quesnel Kangaroos and lost 7-6. In addition to the Demons’ match, the Williams Lake Stampeders were hosted in Lac La Hache by the Tomahawks, where Williams Lake won 11-4 and the Kangaroos were hosted by Terrace on the 17th, with Terrace winning 10-4.

TERRACE - A clear contrast from the last two years, the skiing at Onion Lake has been “fantastic” this January, says Snow Valley Nordics president Dan McElheron. “We’re in really good shape right now, the snow is the best we’ve had for the last three Januaries,” he said last week. “The two previous years we basically ended up having pretty rough Januaries, and then the three previous years we were buried in snow, tons of snow.” But a solid dump of snow earlier in the month means the club was able to get the trails groomed and ready for a busy couple of weekends. “Skiing’s been excellent, a little bit of rain doesn’t hurt either,” he said. “We can certainly tolerate a little bit of rain right now, we’ve got enough snow up there and that actually makes the skiing good because it’s not icy.” “We had big crowds out Saturday morning,” he said, noting that Saturday mornings are when the club holds lessons, for both kids and adults, and the rental shack and cafe is open. The hut is also open Sunday afternoon. “When I left on Sunday, almost 4:30 there was still 25 cars in the parking lot. Lots of new people too, first time at the club.” First-time skiers are invited to visit the club members at the rental hut for advice or help signing up for lessons. “Come up and see us on the weekend when the rental ski is open,” he said. “I’d recommend our doggy trail because there are basically no hills.” Night skiing is popular, with lights along the trails. McElheron said the club is considering a series of night lessons, as well. “We’ve done that in the past, it just depends on the demand,” he said. The club’s open house – tentatively scheduled for midFebruary – is another good time to check out the trails. And the club is hosting its Northern Tech #2 race – a sanctioned race for the northern clubs, on Jan. 31, anticipating about 70-80 racers.
