Nanaimo city Coun. Gordon Fuller remained in critical condition at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital Monday morning after suffering a major heart attack on the weekend. Fuller, a first-time city councillor and community advocate, has been on life support at the hospital since Sunday, when he went into cardiac arrest. Fuller was found slumped in his vehicle on the side of the road early Sunday and was given CPR almost immediately, according to his brother, Robert, who said at this point the city councillor is under sedation and on life support but seems to be holding his own. An update on his condition was expected Monday afternoon after sedation was reduced. Social media feeds have been full of messages of prayers and get-well wishes since news of Fuller’s heart attack was made public. Robert Fuller said the response has been phenomenal and thanks people for the well wishes and care, although he asked that people not phone or visit the hospital. “The hospital is getting flooded by calls,” he said. “It’s just this time is needed for him and it’s needed for the hospital staff to do the good work they are doing.” Mayor Bill McKay, who was at the hospital Sunday and who has been kept apprised of Gord Fuller’s condition by the family, said he was stunned and concerned. “Gord is an integral part of this council,” he said. “After how many tries to council, he finally made it. He’s got way too much work to do to have something like this interfere, so we are just hoping and praying that he has a speedy recovery so that he can get back to doing what he loves doing – helping his community.” news@nanaimobulletin.com

Threat leads to probation The man charged in relation to the August lockdown of Nanaimo Regional General hospital has been given a conditional discharge and one-year probation. Craig Bryan Carter, 39 at the time of the incident, was charged with uttering a threat to cause death or bodily harm to staff at the hospital and subsequently entered a guilty plea, Crown counsel spokesman Neil MacKenzie said. According to his probation conditions, Carter must abstain from owning or carrying weapons or imitations of weapons, abstain from alcohol or any other intoxicating substances and must report to the Nanaimo Mental health Centre, if directed by his spouse or probation officer, according to B.C. court services in Nanaimo.

ferable. It’s just a matter of putting all their research into French, to be able to do a written report and an oral presentation.” Eva Eusanio, one of Smith’s students, said her knowledge of French consisted only of numbers and colours in September, but has improved. She doesn’t really find the math component difficult. “It’s different for everybody. You just learn the numbers, you learn how to say the numbers and saying how to go bigger and smaller,” Eusanio said. Mike Lundine, Quarterway principal, said that there will need to be about 25 students in order to make the program viable. “In terms of budget, you would need at least that many kids to hire a teacher,” Lundine said. Ideas brainstormed at a forum Thursday will form the basis for a strategy to combat child poverty at a follow up meeting set for Feb. 12, 2 p.m., at Beban Park. More than 150 people attended Changing the Dynamics of Poverty for Children and Families forum at Beban Park and according to John Horn, an organizer and City of Nanaimo social planner, it was good to see the community interest in the topic. “There seemed to be great energy around producing items that we might be able to put into an action plan and then implement, so that’s terrific because there were lots of knowledgeable people in the room,” said Horn. “It was a necessary start and it will be up to us to make sure we are able to harness that energy and momentum and turn it into actual concrete change.” According to Joanne Bevis, organizer and Ending Poverty Together Coalition member, the ideas discussed included a reasonable or living wage that would allow people to meet the necessities of life – food, rent, child care and more. “I think that before we do anything else, we really need to work on knowing how the money is spent for a family, of say four with two parents working and two children,” said Bevis. When the wage has been calculated, Bevis said business owners would be approached to see if they would be willing to pay it, if they aren’t already. “Once we can get some support and some publicity ... I think that it can spread. Not that we want to attack little businesses who are barely making enough themselves and forcing them to do something, but there are many large businesses and organizations and so on that can afford to pay more,” said Bevis. She said the coalition knows of families, with two working parents, that cannot afford to live on their current wages.

Sigal Smith, late French immersion program teacher at Nanaimo’s Ecole Quarterway Elementary School, said although math is taught in French, it is still the regular Grade 6 curriculum. The school is currently taking registration for next year’s late immersion class.

Registration open for late French immersion By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

Registration for a late French immersion program in Nanaimo school district is open as the first crop of students at Ecole Quarterway Elementary School progress through the school year. Late French immersion sees Grade 6 students undergoing an intense program that will bring them up to speed with their early immersion counterparts in time for Grade 8. Registration for next complement of students is being taken until Jan. 30. The learning curve is steep, as everything, including science and mathematics, is done in French. However, teacher Sigal Smith said skills learned are transferable and it’s still the regular Grade 6 curriculum. “I do a vocab mini lesson before we start, just for

the words like quotient, dividend, words that they would need to know, but ultimately the math is math, numbers are numbers,” Smith said of her math lesson plan. While the students are learning a different language, there are French words whose English translations are similar in spelling, which can make it easier for students to pick up on. “It can be easier, it can be harder. It would depend on the subject,” said Smith. “We started the year doing a project on francophone countries around the world and comparing them to Canada, so a lot of the vocab there is similar, [population is spelled the same] so when they’re comparing things like that it’s fairly easy. “Research skills, they know how to use their research skills, that’s trans-

Seniors advocate hosts town hall to listen to concerns Isobel Mackenzie, B.C.’s seniors advocate, is coming to Nanaimo to hear and discuss concerns from seniors and their families at a town hall meeting. Mackenzie will also discus her role and initiatives

on which her office is currently working, including a review of seniors’ housing and services in B.C. “Housing. Seniors are very concerned about having affordable housing, the right kind of housing, the services they need in

their house,” Mackenzie said. She said residential care and home support are major concerns, especially in areas with aging populations such as the mid-Island, where people worry whether the ser-

vices and facilities will be there when they need them. Concerns peculiar to the Nanaimo region Mackenzie has heard revolve around the requirement to travel from up Island to Nanaimo for seniors and

medical services and wait times at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. The town hall meeting happens Thursday (Jan. 29) 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Please call 1-877952-3181.

A new accommodations tax has been approved by the provincial government could prove to be a lucrative money provider for Nanaimo’s tourism development and marketing programs. The Municipal and Regional District Tax, approved Thursday, will levy up to two per cent of the price for stays at hotels and other accommodations, such as resorts, hostels, bed and breakfasts and guesthouses. Dan Brady, Nanaimo Hospitality Association chairman, said the association and the city tried to bring the tax to Nanaimo in 2000, but the lack of strategy for using the money was part of the reason it wasn’t approved until now. The tax will be used in part to create and market new attractions and facilities. Most B.C. municipalities already employ the tax. Brady said the first payments to Nanaimo will arrive in July. Forty five per cent of that money will be used to develop new tourism events and expand existing ones, he said. “One of the things we’re looking at working at for this summer is working with the Nanaimo Blues Society,” Brady said. “They want to expand the size of their festival and they need some money to help with bringing in some bigger acts.” Thirty fiver per cent will go toward developing new sporting events and the remaining 20 per cent will cover marketing and promotion costs. The tax goes into affect April 1 and Brady estimates it could bring in $400,000 annually. ““We’re probably one of the last cities, I think, in the province,” said Brady. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

to build float homes on the former shipyard’s marine way system and float them to the marina’s docks. “The seawall [walkway] will go out on the water, so that we can have the restaurants right along the waterfront,” Valliere said. The project needed approval from the Nanaimo Port Authority, which previously did not allow float homes in Nanaimo Harbour. Bernie Dumas, port authority president and CEO, said the port authority negotiated with Valliere over the number of homes proposed for the site and ensured the project would connect the walkways before agreeing to apply to Transport Canada to allow float homes in Newcastle Channel. The Ideal Protein Diet was developed by Dr. Tran Tien Chanh, a general practitioner, sport medicine specialist and biologist, over 20 years ago. When the pancreas is acting like an overheated engine, Dr. Chanh says it has to be turned off to cool down by restricting simple and complex carbohydrates for a short while. The Ideal Protein Diet allows the pancreas to rest and to regenerate, and therefore, operates more efficiently. That means staying away from carbs, fats and sugars and concentrating on just the right amount of protein. The protein, along with 21 amino acids, is found in Ideal Protein packets. Instant, ready-to-eat, easy to prepare, high quality protein products are consumed in conjunction with a 4-phase weight loss method. Gabriola Island director, proposed the motion at the Jan. 13 committee of the whole meeting. “There hasn’t been [a socio-economic study] done and we’d like to know what the effects of having a fixed link to Gabriola is going to cost to the businesses of Gabriola and also to Mudge Island and downtown Nanaimo,” said Houle. He said downtown Nanaimo was included because Gabriola residents shop or do business there while waiting for the ferry. While it would be ultimately up to the government, he estimated the socioeconomic study wouldn’t be part of the bridge feasibility study. “I would think that

they would have to do it separately from the feasibility study because what they’ve said with the feasibility study is that they are just going to look at information that’s already out there,” said Houle. In December, the ministry announced it awarded a $200,000 contract to CH2M Hill Canada Limited to act as consultant for the study. It is expected to be released in the summer.

Award recognizes diligent diverters

Judy and Kirby Villeneuve win inaugural Zero Waste challenge

i just saw it as an opportunity to see if we were doing things right and obviously we were.

By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN

The city’s Zero Waste Challenge has uncovered Nanaimo’s most diligent diverters. The challenge, a partnership between the city and Nanaimo Recycling Exchange, was held during National Waste Reduction Week (Oct. 20-26) which encouraged residents to divert waste from the landfill through recycling and composting. Success was measured by the amount of waste actually diverted. The 40 households that participated achieve an 88-per cent average diversion rate, about 25 per cent better than the average diversion rate for all households across the city. If all Nanaimo homes achieved 88-per cent diversion, landfill greenhouse gas reductions would equal to getting 170 cars off the road annually, according to the City of Nanaimo. First place winners were Judy and Kirby Villeneuve, who achieved a 98-per cent diversion rate. Judy Villeneuve said her family has always recycled and they didn’t depart from their normal routine for the challenge. “I didn’t even know it was a contest, really. I just

saw it as an opportunity to see if we were doing things right and obviously we were,” Villeneuve said. “We’ve always recycled. I remember my mom recycling when I was really little, but we didn’t call it that then.”

The Villeneuves were presented with a certificate at a recent city council meeting and taken out for coffee by Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay and Charlotte Davis, city sanitation and recycling manager. “We weighed everything

once they’d sorted [their garbage], then we sorted it and then we weighed it again, so we got two things. We got the improvement rate and we got the diversion rate,” Davis said. Dean Rownd with Anne and Ken St. Arnault took second place with 97-per cent diversion. Doug and Tanya Hiltz with Norm Abbey of Wisteria Lane won the most improved recyclers category with an 86-per cent diversion rate. One waste product difficult to dispose of is dog feces, which can’t be placed in garbage or recycling bins and driving bags of pet waste to the landfill is impractical. Villeneuve will be testing a pet waste composting unit for the city, which is currently on order. The device is like a bottomless barrel with a lid that is dug into the ground. Lime is sprinkled on pet waste deposited in the unit to promote decomposition. “It’s like a little mini-trial and we’ll see how she goes with that,” Davis said. Davis plans to hold the challenge annually. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Councillor proposes study for aboriginal housing facility By Karl yu

The News BulleTiN

Coun. Bill Bestwick has put forth a notice of motion to ask city council to approve a feasibility study for an affordable urban aboriginal rental housing facility in Nanaimo. Bestwick gave notice at last week’s council meeting that he will put forward a motion seeking to team with the Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre to explore options to develop city property on Bowen Road. The facility would would service aboriginal peoples in Nanaimo living off reserve, particularly out-of-town students attending Vancouver Island University. Chris Beaton, aboriginal centre executive director, made a presentation at the meeting and sees the opportunity to create a facility to add support for students. Many come from smaller communities and can feel lost and disconnected from culture and family in a large urban centre, he said. The centre also has a focus on social enterprise, looking for ways to generate its own revenue, as opposed to reliance on funding, Beaton said. “We see an affordable housing facility as a way to address the housing needs of these young people and their families, but also a way of building a sense of community, so that they’re better supported when they’ve come to Nanaimo and then they can focus on their studies,” said Beaton. Bestwick said while not specific to university students, the university component is a very significant driver for the motion and there is a need for such a facility. “The site, the location, is convenient. We prepared the site for a housing component unit in our city, so it’s an appropriate site. The location in proximity to VIU and it’s zoned properly, so it captures a lot of the needs and it just seems like an appropriate use of the site,” Bestwick said. The motion was scheduled to be voted on at last night’s council meeting, which was cancelled. If approved, the report is expected to be completed and brought back to councillors before April 13. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Store closure isn’t surprising In years to come, Target’s advance and retreat in Canada will likely be used as a classic textbook case study in business schools. Target’s U.S. parent announced this month it will close all 133 stores, including the one at Nanaimo North Town Centre. The company had a good reputation in Canada before it opened a single store here, given that many Canadians live near the border and regularly shopped at U.S. Target stores. It decided to take over an existing chain, Zellers, that had a loyal core of shoppers, close down those stores and lay off all employees. It then completely renovated them, and opened a large number of stores all across the country, all at once. This is something that no other U.S. retailer who has made the trek north has done. Wal-Mart took over Woolco, but gradually rebranded their stores and opened new ones. Building supply stores Home Depot and Lowe’s both entered the Canadian market gradually, even though they were (and remain) large U.S. chains. Costco came into Canada more gradually as well. By all accounts, all these companies have done well with their Canadian operations. By coming in more slowly, they all learned the challenges of doing business in Canada, including the higher costs of distributing to a smaller number of stores that are widely geographically separated. They also learned that Canadian shopping habits differ from U.S. ones. Target got off to a bad start when its stores opened in Canada. There were persistent reports of empty shelves. Prices were considerably higher than at U.S. stores, which may have been understandable, but was a cause of resentment by many formerly loyal Target customers. It shows that, in business, it is vital to have products that meet consumers’ needs, and to be able to execute a proven growth strategy. Companies who forget those fundamental lesson simply cannot stay in business. The study also found that carbon capture and storage, touted as one way to continue exploiting and burning fossil fuels, is too new, expensive and limited to make enough of a difference by 2050. Study co-author Paul Ekins told National Geographic that putting hundreds of billions of dollars into fossil fuel exploration and development is “deeply irrational” economic behaviour. “What would be ideal,” he said, would be to “use the opportunity of this fall in the oil price to start instituting a global carbon tax, which would take some of the volatility out of the prices.” Removing fossil fuel subsidies would also help. With 2014 confirmed as the hottest year on record, and 13 of the hottest 15 years having occurred since 2000, we can’t afford to ignore the consequences. It’s astounding that, in the face of such overwhelming evidence from scientists worldwide, people continue to deny the problem exists or that humans can or should do anything about it. It’s especially irresponsible when energy conservation and cleaner fuel alternatives offer so many economic benefits, including job creation, greater stability and reduced healthcare costs. It’ll be much easier and less costly to get on with it now than to wait until we’re left with few choices. www.davidsuzuki.org

speaks volumes. It is difficult for me to think of anything more cruel, abusive or negligent than a government that has the ability to make concrete, evidencebased social policy changes and investments in improving the lives of children, but sits on its hands instead. All of this is occurring while B.C.’s most vulnerable children starve, increasingly becoming at risk of #3 housing insecurity and homelessness, and the next generation of victims of foster care system are This churned out to lives of tragedy, despair and suffering.

This should do it!

Re: Poverty affects thousands of city’s children, Jan. 20. I challenge the perspective of those who do not think raising the rates of income assistance would bring immediate improvements in the lives of poor families. As a social worker in B.C. for well over a decade, it is my analysis that it is the B.C. government that is the biggest driver of child and family poverty in the province. I wonder how many people can afford to house and raise their children on monthly income assistance of $877, which is the rate for one parent and one child? Or $1,061, the monthly

rate for one parent and two children? There are many other things the B.C. government could easily do to improve the lives of poor children and families. Access to affordable housing, high-quality child care and earlylearning opportunities, as well as family support, mental health and addiction services are ways to keep vulnerable families intact and improve the psychosocial and economic status of those at the bottom of the ladder of the economy. B.C. is the only province in Canada that doesn’t have a provincial strategy to reduce child and family poverty. This

To the Editor,

Now that the new recycle place is opened up on Old

Victoria Road, the whole neighbourhood has been inundated with shopping carts. Would it not be unreasonable for the recycle facility to have a place that these carts could be left for pickup by the stores they belong to or whoever picks them up?

NDP politicians don’t seem to foresee election success To the Editor,

The NDP is slowing fading away. Two B.C. NDP federal MPs, Libby Davies and Jean Crowder, are not running in the next federal election. This shows that

they are admitting that is no chance of the federal NDP ever becoming the government of Canada. If there was that chance, they would have run again in hopes of obtaining a cabinet

post. Here in B.C., we see two NDP MLAs, Mable Elmore and Jenny Kwan, are considering putting their names in for nomination in Davies’s riding. This again shows they too see no chance

Songwriter credits fans for saving him

Ryan McMahon performs at the Dinghy Dock Pub on Wednesday night

I make sure that people know that they saved my life.

BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

I

t was only a couple of years ago that singer-songwriter Ryan McMahon and his family found themselves in a bit of a pickle. “We were in bad financial shape,” McMahon told the News Bulletin. After more than a dozen years making a living as a musician, McMahon was looking for ways to bring in some additional cash and considered turning to work on the docks. “My father was a longshoreman and his father was a longshoreman,” he said. However, McMahon wanted to continue making money strictly as a musician. He decided to make a post online indicating that he would be willing to perform house concerts for a small fee. “I thought we would get one or two shows RYAN MCMAHON was to get a few born in Chemainus and hundred raised in Ladysmith. dollars to tie us over and keep collections at bay and things like that,” he said. Within 24 hours of the posting, McMahon had received 17 offers from fans who wanted to have him play at their house. The amount of interest led McMahon to only one conclusion. “I didn’t call the longshore office,” he said. Since then, McMahon has been plugging away as a singer-songwriter and he has been letting his fans know just how grateful he is for all their support. “I make sure that the people know that they saved my life,” he said. “They saved my career.” On Wednesday (Jan. 28) McMahon will be performing at the Dingy Dock

Ladysmith singer-songwriter Ryan McMahon will be releasing his sixth full-length album, Put Me Back Together in April. McMahon performs tomorrow night at the Dinghy Dock Pub.

Pub. “The Dinghy Dock is fun and easy,” McMahon said. “It is the most laid back kind of gig for me. It is always nice to be able to play at home in front of familiar faces.” McMahon, who was born in Chemainus but grew up in Ladysmith, is currently putting the finishing touches on his newest album, Put Me Back Together, which will be released

in April. McMahon, who has released five full-length albums in 15 years, explained that the record is a reflection of his time living on the Island and that it includes a song that pays tribute to his hometown of Ladysmith. “There is a lot of reflection of living on Vancouver Island after living in the city for eight years,” he said.

McMahon is also a member of The Lion The Bear The Fox, which includes Chris Arruda and Cory Woodward. McMahon said being a member of the band has made him a better musician and person. “It’s made me a better person, being around them. They are really, really smart and driven people,” McMahon said. “We each bring something different to the table. I have been able to glean some things from them that I wouldn’t have been able to learn on my own all this time.” Despite having a solo project and being a member of The Lion The Bear The Fox, McMahon wants to do more. “I kind of want to be a poor man’s Jack White,” he said. “I would love to start a third project to be honest. Anything to keep me playing music and out on the road.” Nearly three years since his decision to play house concerts, McMahon is proud of the decision to continue to make a living as a full-time musician and hopes that it will leave a positive impression with his children. “I hope that they are going to be proud to have somebody in the house with them that didn’t just take the nine-to-five because he had to and just worked really hard at what he wanted to do,” McMahon said. “It is hard being away from them but I really want to leave … some kind of legacy behind.” Ryan McMahon performs at the Dingy Dock Pub on Protection Island on Wednesday (Jan. 28) with David Bitonti at 8 p.m. For more information, please visit www.ryanmcmahon.com.

Veasey,

Ronald James 1953-2015

It is with great sadness we announce Ron’s passing on January 18, 2015 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 30 years, Brenda, son Jonathan Hanna, grandson Gage, sister Margaret, brothers Harvey (Diane), Charles, brother in law Arnold (Gay), sister in law Lois and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ron was predeceased by his mother Susan, grandfather Herbert, his loving grandmother Katherina, brother Herbert and brother in law Jack Amstutz. Ron started working in a mill at age 18 for George W. Dorman, then transferred to Western Forest Products in 1980. He retired due to health issues on October 1, 2014. Ron was proud to be accident free for 34 years. He will be missed by all his coworkers and friends who loved him dearly. Ron’s interests were travel, sports and spending time at home with his dog, Abigail. Special thanks to Dr. H. Mark and the doctors and nurses at Palliative Care for their compassion and care of Ron. Private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation of Canada is appreciated. Sands ~ Nanaimo (250)753-2032

Happy Endings: Chanel, Pascha, Brix, Trinity, Tessa & Otis

Chanel

Cocoa and Chanel were adopted from the shelter as a pair of bonded rats. They are now living happily ever after with a family of their own, which even includes a cat named Chopper! Pascha was adopted in 2010 to an amazing set of dog parents. Two years later they decided to add to their family, with Brix. Brix came from a group of three pit bull puppies that came from the Comox Valley. They were quickly adopted and still have puppy reunions whenever they can. It became quickly apparent that Brix was not going to stay a small squishy puppy for long. Trinity came into our care terrified and injured. It took staff at animal control over two weeks to catch this scared girl. Upon examination by veterinary staff they discovered she would need to have one of her rear legs amputated. Trinity healed up quickly and Trinity began to show her more social side with staff and volunteers at the shelter. It was during this time that she captured the heart of her new mom. Trinity is now an incredibly well adjusted and social girl. She lives happily with her mom and dad, two canine siblings and even a handful of feline siblings who she adores. Trinity can often be seen at the shelter helping new shelter dogs adjust to life in our care. Our sweet little Tessa found her forever home today! Her person came into the shelter looking for a kitten but fell in love with our girl. Tessa seemed to know what was happening because she climbed into a Hide Perch and GO and waited patiently for us to finish her adoption so she could go home. Congratulations Tessa!

She can take a bit to warm up, but once she gains the trust of her new family she is a joy to be around. She lived quite happily with the other dogs in the foster home, but she shouldn’t live with cats as she has a little prey drive. Bailey has displayed some protectiveness around strangers, so she would do best in a home that has experience with fearful dogs with the protective nature. If this sounds like the dog for you then come down and talk to the staff about this beautiful dog.

VIU veteran owns the boards Jenna Carver leads PacWest in rebounding BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

T

here’s a reason why rebounding is sometimes called an ‘effort stat.’ Because as VIU Mariners veteran Jenna Carver is showing again and again this season, grabbing possession of that basketball is, first and foremost, about effort. Carver, who is from Nanaimo, is in the midst of her final – and finest – season at Vancouver Island University. She was the Pacific Western Athletic Association’s Athlete of the Week last week after recording back-toback double-doubles, including one game with 21 points and 23 rebounds. It was her second 20-plus rebound game this season; she leads the PacWest in rebounding with 12.3 per game and has climbed into the top 10 in scoring, too, at 11.7 points per game. Bill McWhinnie, coach of the Mariners, called Carver the heart of the team. “She’s about the hardest-working kid I’ve ever coached…” he said. “She’s a teamfirst kid that just plays so much harder than everybody else at times.” Listed at 5-foot-9, Carver isn’t generally going to have the reach advantage when she’s

in the paint, going up for a ball that clangs off the rim. It comes down to the game within the game, she said – the competition of going for the same ball as the opponent and trying to

win it. “I honestly just try really hard and have a lot of passion when I play and just go for the ball and don’t give up,” she said. She goes for every-

thing and there’s no ball that she doesn’t think she can get, McWhinnie said. That effort, plus her hoop sense and her strength and fitness, leads to a whole lot of boards.

It’s helping her score a lot more points than she has in the past, too. The coaching staff has given her the confidence to shoot more, she said, and the strong play of teammates including forward Sienna Pollard and guard Amanda Tapia creates open looks for Carver and others. The group is encouraged by what it’s accomplishing on the court. Success is important, especially since the M’s are hosting nationals this March and want to win provincials so they can earn their way. “Coming in, we were all pretty unsure, and people underestimated us,” Carver said. “Now it’s the second [half of the] season, we’ve kind of shown our true colours.” Every step the M’s take makes them feel like they can get where they want to go. “I definitely think that our goal is achievable,” Carver said. “I know we’re all a lot more certain of it.” The Mariners women’s team split their home games this weekend, edging out Capilano University Blues by a score of 48-46. The following day they dropped a 50-42 game to Quest University Kermodes. The women sit at second spot in the standings. The Mariners men’s team was in action at VIU gym too, with a lopsided victory over Capilano by a score of 105-63. The men’s team also beat Quest 93-82 to retain first place in the PacWest division. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

electric dams are far from perfect, they have created real economic stability, good paying jobs, mostly stable prices, clean air and water, as well as recreational areas. Superior renewable energy projects can now be found in geothermal electrical plants and tidal, wind, solar and wave energy sources – most costing less per dollar invested than do dams, with less environmental damage. But for the real economic powerhouses we can turn to energy efficiency measures such as robust public transportation, building upgrades, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, liveable cities, remanufacturing centres and more. Many countries turned to similar projects after the world wars because they created more jobs and improved our lives.
