Citizen of the Year roasted at Chamber gala It was a fun-filled evening at the recent Inaugural Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce gala. Besides the swearing in of the new Chamber, Citizen of the Year for 2014, Derek Kortschaga was honoured and roasted by friends and businesses. Guests were reminded of Kortschaga’s many contributions to the community, including being Santa Claus for Cranbrook Dodge’s Christmas party, shaving his head for the Relay for Life and, of course, taking on

Cranbrook Eagles boxing coach Tom White in the annual Fight Night for charity. “He constantly and consistently is taking the lead to help organize and help connect other businesses to be a part of it,” said Jason Caven, sales manager at the radio station. That is why Kortschaga took home the honour of being the Citizen of the Year and why so many turned out to honour the man. Check out a slideshow of the evening on www.kootenayadvertiser.com.

Construction of tailings impoundment facility now in operation at Red Chris mine south of Dease Lake in northwestern B.C. By Tom Fletcher The B.C. government is moving to restore confidence in its mine inspection system with a $6 million budget increase and a new office dedicated to overseeing major mines. Premier Christy Clark announced the changes Monday at the annual B.C. Association for Mineral Exploration conference in Vancouver. The money comes from contingency funds in the current budget, and will be added to the base budget of the Ministry of Energy and Mines for future years. Mine inspections have been under scrutiny since the collapse of the tailings dam at

Mount Polley coppergold mine near Williams Lake last summer. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett at first insisted that geotechnical inspections of large B.C. mines were unaffected by budget cuts that reduced inspections of gravel mining and other operations, but Monday’s announcement tells a different story. “Since 2011, we’ve made significant improvements to increase geotechnical inspections, hire additional staff and reduce the turnaround time for notice of work permits,” Bennett said in a statement after the premier’s announcement. NDP leader John Horgan said the premier’s announcement appears

to be in preparation for what he expects will be “a very damning report” on the Mount Polley situation, which is subject to multiple investigations after the earth dam around its tailings pond abruptly breached and released millions of tonnes of water and mine tailings. Horgan said it’s unusual for any government to fund essential work like mine inspections out of contingency funds, and he’s not convinced that it really has been happening. The government refused opposition calls to release all provincial mine inspection records, instead appointing an independent expert panel to review the Mount Polley events. Bennett visited Alaska in November to reassure state officials and fishermen about B.C. mining oversight, after the province issued an environmental certificate to develop a major metal ore deposit near the Alaska border. The ministry expects to collect an extra $3 million a year from additional fees collected from working mines.

Plans underway to grow B.C.’s organic sector The Ministry of Agriculture is consulting with the organic sector about developing a three pillar approach to strengthen the awareness and reputation of B.C.’s organic foods, locally, across Canada, and around the world. “By working with B.C. organic sector stakeholders, we’ll develop a model that creates consumer and industry certainty around organic products, and ensures transitional strategies are in place to help small businesses seeking the benefits of joining a brand of recognized organic standards. There are huge opportunities for local organic food producers in B.C. and around the world and this is a key step the B.C. government and stakeholders are taking to best take advantage of them,” said B.C. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick. The consultations involve regulating the use of the term “organic”, developing transitional strategies that support farmers to become certified, creating business strategy and market development programs, and creating a brand to market B.C. organic foods. “COABC is pleased to work with the Ministry of Agriculture to strengthen the B.C. organic sector through the proposed initiative. Clarity in the marketplace will improve by requiring that everyone using the term organic is certified through an accredited certification body. It will ensure that consumers have better information when making their purchasing decisions and it will also encourage continued growth of organics in B.C.,”said Susan Snow, COABC co-president. The proposed change will require all products marketed as “organic” in B.C. to be certified under either a provincial or national certification program. Operators producing and selling their organic products strictly within B.C. will require provincial certification. B.C. companies with customers in other provinces or countries will require certification by a federally accredited certification body, just as they do today.

The provincial certification program follows the same standard as the national program, but with streamlined record keeping and documentation practices. Provincial certification offers growers access to the local organic market with less paperwork, while still ensuring B.C. consumers have certainty when purchasing organic foods. Under the model being discussed: * Following the development of an effective and efficient administration and enforcement system and a suitable period of transition, producers and processors that are not certified under either the provincial or federal certification program would not be able to use the term “organic” to describe or market their products. * Producers, processors and handlers of organic products including farm gate sales, farmers’ markets and retail stores, would be required to have documentation verifying their accredited certification. * Reports by citizens concerned that an uncertified product produced and sold exclusively within B.C. was being marketed as organic would be investigated by the B.C. government. In addition to conversations with Certified Organic Associations of BC (COABC) and individual farmers, the ministry will be distributing an e-survey seeking input from organic farmers about the proposed model. The responses will be compiled and used to determine how the model being developed should proceed. Requiring organic certification would assure consumers the products they purchase are grown using recognized organic practices, and promote the highest standards of organic production in B.C. Currently, companies with organic products produced, handled, and sold exclusively within B.C., may choose to participate in the BC Certified Organic Program, which is administered by the Certified Organic Association of BC.

ATTENTION: BUILDING CONTRACTORS IN THE EAST KOOTENAY If you are involved with the following trades in the construction industry: framing, heating/cooling, plumbing, electrical, insulation -- this is important information for you. Building officials with the City of Cranbrook and the Regional District of the East Kootenay (RDEK) invite you to attend an evening forum to review the new BC Building Code changes that came into effect December 19, 2014. These changes to be reviewed include but are not limited to: Change to insulation requirements Change to air barrier/vapour barrier details Change to HVAC and Service Water heating requirements Change to heating and air conditioning systems Change to radon mitigation requirements Change to window regulations The Forum will take place in Cranbrook on Wednesday February 11, 2015 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at the Manual Training School, located at 1212 2nd Street North next to the Cranbrook Public Library. There will be a short presentation followed by an opportunity to ask questions of the local building inspectors from the City of Cranbrook and the RDEK. Light refreshments will be served.

10 Neat Things by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

Vegetables in Winter? 1. Can’t Wait Any longer? Although days are getting longer, spring is still a long ways away. Some gardeners are beginning to chomp at the bit and green thumbs all over are beginning to get itchy. For those who really cannot wait for fresh, homegrown produce, indoor growing might be an option. 2. High or Low? There are basically two types of plants you can grow. Low-energy plants include herbs, sprouts, and any leafy greens, such as lettuce or spinach. They can be grown with little effort on a sunny windowsill or another bright spot in your house. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and squashes are examples of high-energy plants that require a bit more room, equipment and effort to get growing. 3. Getting Food Directly to the Plant. Hydroponics is the means of growing, using a mineral nutrient solution and with or without a soilless medium. If minerals are dissolved in water, the plants’ roots can absorb them directly. If you have ever put a plant clipping into a glass of water in the hopes of making it root, you have practiced hydroponics. This method provides a great way for growing high energy plants indoors all year round. 4. Not Rocket Science. With its pipes and drip lines, nutrient solutions, pumps and grow lamps, hydroponics seems like an ultra modern invention and can even have a sort of science fiction feel to it. The fact is, however, that hydroponic principles have been used for thousands of years. The famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon - one of the seven wonders of the ancient world - are believed to have been grown with hydroponics. 5. Commercial Growing. In the 1620s, British scientist and politician Sir Francis Bacon was the first to conduct formal research, exploring the ability of plants to grow without using soil in a reservoir for nutrients. About 300 years later, Berkeley scientist William Gericke was the first to promote the use of hydroponics in commercial agriculture. 6. What’s in it for Me? Hydroponics can produce higher crop yields and be practiced in places where in-ground growing is not possible. It is used in commercial plant production in many densely populated areas where land comes at a premium, such as Japan or Europe; as well as in places with an arid climate, such as Arizona or Israel. 7. Do you need a Medium? There are two main types of hydroponics - solution culture and medium culture. Solution culture uses only a nutrient solution to grow plants. The medium culture uses a solid material for the roots, this can be sand, gravel, vermiculite, rockwool or even coco or wood fibres. When designing a home hydroponics system, it's generally recommended that a medium be used. 8. Covering the Basics. For a basic home system, you will need a tray to hold medium, plants as well as a nutrient solution, a place to put the system, a container to be used as a reservoir, a pump, plant containers, growing medium, drainage tubing, a timer, seeds or plant cutting and nutrient solution. 9. Light up the Situation. If you decide to grow plants that require a lot of light and sunlight is not readily available, you will have to add an artificial lighting system. You can find these basic items for a home system as well as the expert advice you need to set it up at your garden centre. 10. Keep a close eye. A disadvantage of hydroponics is that without soil as a buffer, any problem in the system can quickly cause serious issues with your plants. This means you will have to closely monitor your system. The rewards, however, of having fresh produce and experiencing growth within your home will cure those winter blues.

Wolf kill last hope for caribou

Mountain caribou from the South Selkirk herd, which has fallen to 18 animals despite intensive conservation efforts. B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher When the B.C. government last resorted to shooting wolves from helicopters in the 1980s, an emotional public outcry forced a retreat. In the B.C. tradition, sensation-seeking urban media and protesters led the way. An outraged reporter named Pamela Martin marched a BCTV crew off the road near Fort St. John to expose this presumed crime against nature. With a metre of snow and temperatures dipping to -40, they didn’t get far, but public sentiment was aroused enough for politicians to overrule wildlife biologists. This winter, while snow reveals the wolves’ location from the air, the choppers and rifles are out again. And my heart goes out to the biologists and First Nations hunters who face this grim task. The South Selkirk mountain caribou herd,

which ranges between B.C., Idaho and Washington, has been the target of intensive conservation efforts by governments on both sides of the border. Six of the remaining 18 animals now wear radio collars. There were 46 in 2009, only 27 by 2012, and wolves have killed two more since last spring. Targeted hunting and trapping haven’t been sufficient, so up to 24 grey wolves are to be shot from the air before the snow melts. There are seven caribou herds in the South Peace, with the Graham herd the largest at about 700. It’s the control group, left to fend for itself as a measure of wolf removal for the rest. The Burnt Pine herd is down to one bull, effectively extinct. The province and Treaty 8 First Nations are working on a plan to kill 120-160 wolves in that region. It’s long been accepted that resource roads, logging and recreational

trail use have increased herd disruption and predator access through what would otherwise be seamless bush and deep snow. Snowmobiles and even back-country skiers can shift the balance. Smithers-area outdoor enthusiasts are currently being urged to stay away from the Telkwa Mountains, where the caribou herd is down to fewer than 20 animals. Local hunting and snowmobile clubs have observed a ban on motorized travel since 2003, but of course there will always be yahoos who chase animals for fun. A mountain caribou recovery plan was implemented in 2007, protecting 2.2 million hectares from logging and roadbuilding, including most of the core habitat of the South Selkirk herd. The Nature Conservancy of Canada bought 550 square kilometres in that region to protect habitat. Strategies include transplanting animals

from healthier to weaker herds to increase genetic diversity, and capturing and penning females with young calves to keep them from being picked off by wolves. The B.C. grey wolf population averages around 8,500, with managed hunting and trapping to protect livestock while preserving the wolf as apex predator in most of its wide range. This context is seldom reported by Vancouver media, which mostly sees its role not as explaining issues but rather embarrassing whatever political party is in power, and providing an uncritical platform for the stop-loggingmining-energy crowd, which is seen as popular with urban viewers. Remember the spotted owl, with the fringe of its range extending into southern B.C.? Our branch-plant enviros marketed that one for years. Its core habitat is Washington and Oregon, where many sawmills were shuttered to “save” them. Now they’re shooting invasive barred owls, which have emerged as a greater threat to spotted owls than logging. Context is important. I suppose we’ll never know what difference the 1980s wolf kill would have made if it hadn’t been shouted down for TV ratings and urban enviro-donations. RCL #24 President Clive Brown presents EKFH Directors Russ Colombo, Sheilah Moore, Doug Frioult and Executive Director Donna Grainger with a leadership gift for the ICU redevelopment project.

Royal Canadian Legion donates for Starlite EKFH’s annual Starlite Campaign and the focus on equipment for the regional hospital’s intensive care unit got a beautiful gift this past week. The Royal Canadian Legion #24 is no stranger to showing its support to the foundation and its various fundraising campaigns. Recently RCL #24 President Clive Brown presented a cheque of $11,088 to EKFH. The donation is allocated to purchase a blood gas analyzer for

the new 6-bed intensive care unit currently under construction at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The equipment is used to analyze the red blood cells transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide blood gases throughout the body. The oxygen and carbon dioxide levels of the blood and pH balance of blood can indicate the presence of certain medical conditions, such as cardiac, lung or kidney disorders and the pres-

ence or status of other critical conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, haemorrhage, drug overdose or shock. RCL #24 witnessed incredible support during its annual poppy drive. With a focus on veterans and giving back to community, the local Legion and its members are making a significant impact in critical support for intensive care. Your ICU needs you. The 15 month, one million dollar fundraising campaign is underway. Please consider making a donation at www. ekfh.ca.

REMINDERS Grads – Remember your grad transition sheets!!!!

Members of the photography 11 class spent time one evening this week taking photographs in the dark. The students found it interesting and fun while they gained a better understanding of exposure, and aperture and shutter settings. They created new images by directing light, working with long exposures of passing cars and moving the cameras while photographing stationary light sources. Students utilized the scenes presented to them and discovered new light effects in familiar places.

ATTEND FORA CHANCE TO WIN A $300 TUITION AWARD

News from Aboriginal Education at Mount Baker

The New Year and the up-coming new semester bring many opportunities for fun, learning and participation for the Wild Warriors Aboriginal Student Leadership group. We are organizing a signature gathering campaign for Have A Heart Day, in order to raise awareness of the plight of many Canadian First Nations students who struggle with monumental issues in an attempt to go to school. Underfunded schools that are far sub-par, leaky, cold, toxic; with little or no resources, and or no local schools, forcing young students to leave their homes in order to attend school are a few of the challenges many of our youth face on a daily basis. Named in memory of Shannen Koostachin, a student who worked tirelessly to make changes in her community, the campaign engages Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people to better understand the education inequities and to take action to ensure all First Nations children attend good schools and receive a proper education. We will be answering questions and collecting signatures during the week of February 10. More great news includes receiving an Urban Partnership Programme grant, which will help us celebrate Métis culture as well as provide lots of career exploration and employment related certification, for example; Occupational First Aid, C.O.R.E. hunting, Fall Protection, H2S Alive, etc...... let your imagination be your guide. If you are a student with Aboriginal ancestry, you are eligible. This will be starting really soon, so bring your wish list and ideas to The Gathering Place, room 101 at Mount Baker, or call Debbie, Peter or Sharon at 250-426-5241 ext 747 or 748. There will also be an opportunity to attend a Career Fair in early March.

Nominate someone truly special for the Order of British Columbia

I encourage you to nominate those individuals in your community whose leadership and passion for the betterment of humanity contribute to our quality of life in British Columbia and beyond,”

Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor and Chancellor of the Order of British Columbia has been a privilege throughout my career to encourage Aboriginal youth to go further and reach higher by connecting them with strong leaders and mentors in their community. The Order of B.C. is a reminder of the impact that we as individuals can have on a larger scale in our communities and beyond, and I imagine one day to share this honour with the next generation of inspiring global citizens.” Nomination forms and submission instructions are available by email: orderofbc@gov.bc.ca, telephone (250) 3871616 or online:www. orderofbc.gov.bc.ca/. All nominations must be submitted to theHonours and Awards Secretariat office in Victoria by March 6, 2015.

Resorts of the Canadian Rockies and the Fernie Alpine Resort is the latest group to show its support for EKFH and its $1,000,0000 fundraising drive for equipment for the new ICU Redevelopment Project at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Karin Pepper of RCR & Fernie Alpine Resort presented a cheque of $500 through its RCR Community Summit Fund to the regional hospital foundation. The RCR Community Summit Fund supports many worthwhile organizations and is committed to the communities they operate in and are dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle. The ICU donation is a welcomed addition to EKFH’s fundraising efforts. Equipping the new 6-bed unit is vitally important as the ICU is traditionally known as the department that treats the sickest of the

sick including trauma cases, cardiac & stroke care and multi-system failure. The EKRH ICU is the only one in the region and is supported by four specialized physicians (internists) and a team of nine specially trained registered nurses. Joining in to celebrate the gift were representatives from the Elk Valley Hospital Foundation. The two foundations work individually and collaboratively funding equipment and/or patient comforts for the Elk Valley hospital and other health care facilities as well as the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. To support the ICU Redevelopment Project donations are accepted through www.ekfh.ca, at your local hospital or at EKFH’s office ~ 13 24th Ave N, Cranbrook, BC V1C 3H9.

Time to nominate your favourite professional The Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce is encouraging residents to nominate a professional services provider who exemplifies excellence in their area of practice. “This is a new category created this year to recognize the professionals in town that provide exceptional services,” said Chamber Executive Director David D. Hull. “Your financial advisor, lawyer, landscaper, surveyor, hairstylist, dentist and the list goes on,” said Hull, “Anyone who provides you or your company with professional services. The Chamber added

this category as there was no natural fit for professional services providers in previous award years. “We are looking to a robust and extensive list of nominees in this category”, Hull commented, “There are so many really exceptional professionals in Cranbrook worthy of nomination.” Nominate your exceptional professional services provider by going to www.cranbrookchamber.com Further information can be sought by calling the Chamber office at 250 426 5914.

The best Zamboni driver in the region to be crowned in March

Photo submitted

Who will be crowned as best Zamboni driver? Find out in March. East Kootenay Community Credit Union (EKC) partnered with the Kootenay ICE hockey team and the City of Cranbrook to find the most skilled Zamboni driver in the region. On Friday March 13th the winner will be determined at the final EKC’s Zamboni Challenge! From eight Zamboni drivers the following

two will compete. Only one will be recognized with distinction as the Kootenay’s ‘Master Zamboni Driver’. Along with bragging rights, they will bring home the trophy for one year and be on the plaque at Western Financial Place for years to come. They will also bring home $500 for their community group!

• Friday November 7th – Mathieu Fournier – Canal Flats • Saturday January 24th – Roy Sargent – Cranbrook The winners have been determined by the Zamboni driver who has had the best time for completing the obstacle course including any penalty time added for errors (5 seconds for knocking down a pylon and 10 seconds forgoing the wrong way). EKC has committed $3,250 to supporting eight community groups. The Zamboni drivers have all been teamed up with a community group and EKC has generously donated $500 to the winning team and $250 to the runners up.

Valley residents give into CBT priorities review From Echo

The

Valley

A packed room of local residents gave input into what they hope the future of the Upper Columbia Valley might look like during the Columbia Basin Trust’s (CBT) Have You Say workshop in Invermere last week. The CBT has held similar sessions all around the Columbia Basin, seeking input from community residents as it reviews and refines its strategic priorities and figures out how best to use its expected increase in revenues. “I’m really please with turnout; it’s the biggest we have so far,” said CBT chair Greg Deck to the more than 100 valley resident in gathered at the Invermere Lions Hall on Wednesday, January 21st. He said the Trust’s projected revenue from its power projects will increase from $27 million to around $50 million. “This represents a big opportunity. That’s why we’re asking for your input,” said Deck. “All your input is going to guide where (the CBT) is going in the next five years,” said Golden-based CBT special initiatives manger Heather Mitchell, adding the workshop is part of the process the Trust goes through when it reviews its strategic priorities. The entire process takes a full year, and includes informationgathering at workshops all across the basin, analyzing the data and then coming up with new action plans and strategic priorities. At the Lions Hall, workshop participants sat in groups around tables, brainstormed answers to questions and then, table by table, shared their answers with the rest of the room. The questions prompted participants to think about what they want to see in their community in the future and how it can happen. Most of the answers presented by participants centred around themes such as sustainability and smart growth, but a few were more specific. Bill Swan presented his table’s desire for a locally-driven invest-

ment fund that would support projects in sectors such as local food and agriculture. “We’re always looking outside the valley for funding; always the thinking of ‘bring the tourists in and we’ll be fine.’ And we are, and it usually works great. Until the tourists decide not to come,’ said Swan. “Why not pool our own financial resources and use that to drive projects here in the valley?” Maria Kliavkoff presented her table’s view that valley needs much better public transportation. “For us, it’s all about transportation. It’s hard to get from Brisco to Canal Flats to Invermere, especially if you have any kind of physical disability,” said Kliavkoff. The idea of more regional c-ooperation and integration was a common theme for several tables, with two tables going as far as suggesting the valley’s multiple communities should amalgamate. “Our idea is one big municipality for the valley,” said Dorothy Blunden, presenting her table’s views. “We need to stop each going in our own direction. If we band together, we can do transportation well, we can do sustainable business well. We can stop having money and resources flow from the valley to Victoria and then having to beg to get something back.” In the question and answer period at the end of the workshop, Regional District of East Kootenay Area F director and CBT board director Wendy Booth said there is already a high degree of regional co-ordination among local government officials from the valley. “We do co-operate quite well together already. If Canal Flats needs money for a project from Area F, we (Area F) will help them out, and they will do the same thing for us,” said Booth. Several participants asked about ongoing operational funding from CBT for nonprofit organizations in the valley. “CBT does provide core and operational funding for organizations across the basin,” said CBT special ini-

tiative director Kindy Gosal, adding that the trust will provide clear direction on the topic soon. “You will see some-

thing coming out of this process that succinctly addresses this issue,” said Gosal. Another theme consistently mentioned by

Invermere workshop participants was a desire for more community dialogue.

Local MADD Leader Katryna Sigurdson can use your help. For the Advertiser My friend Katryna Sigurdson, is a 39 year old, single mother of a wonderful 17 year old girl named Katey. With her permission, she has allowed me to set up this campaign in her name. On May 8, 2014 Katryna’s world came to a screeching halt. She was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer. Katryna was taken by ambulance to Calgary, Alberta, 5 hours away from her daughter, home and her life. The treatments she needed were not available where she lives. After a week in the hospital she was sent home, on blood thinners, to await treatment dates. On May 22, 2014 Katryna went back to Calgary for a PET Scan and due to the blood thinners and a bleeding tumour, almost bled to death. She was admitted back into the hospital where she remained

until June 13, 2014 when she was released to the attached hostel. 4 hours later Katryna was re-admitted to the hospital after fainting outside and breaking her right foot. She had surgery on June 14 to repair the break and remained in hospital until June 26 when she was finally able to return home after 42 days in the hospital, mostly having radiation treatments and 5 chemo treatments. Katryna was in a wheelchair for three months following the foot break. Being in the hospital and off work has put an immense financial strain on Katryna and her daughter. Travelling to and from Calgary monthly, medications, school fees, graduation fees, and just general everyday expenses have started to show. She has faced eviction and almost had her car repossessed simply because her medical EI ran out in September and she was

not eligible for Income Assistance until the end of November. Through all of this Katryna has somehow managed to keep a smile on her face and keep a positive attitude. She is very actively involved in her community. She is the Community Leader for MADD Kimberley Cranbrook and she coaches Special Olympics bowling. With all of the selfless giving that Katryna gives to her community, family and friends I wanted to be able to give back to her and that is why I am setting up this fundraiser. Katryna is now in partial remission and still needs to travel to Calgary for appointments and treatments. She is currently being sent for further testing for Colon Cancer as well. You can help Katryna by visiting www.gofundme.com/trynaj and donating for her recovery.

Get ready to laugh tonight, January 30, as the Snowed In Comedy Tour takes the stage at the Key City Theatre. The show features

comedians Dan Quinn, Paul Myrehaug, Pete Zedlacher and Craig Campbell as they wend their way across the province playing shows and enjoying our winter roads.

The tour started on January 6 and has already moved across the province from Prince Rupert, to Prince George, Smithers, Kamloops, Nanaimo, Campbell River, Port

Not sure why BUSINESS IS SLOW?

Alberni, Victoria, Vernon and a host of other spots before coming here. “Cranbrook is instrumental in holding it together for us in the area,” said Campbell in a rare moment between shows. “It’s a lot of miles, but you grow up in Western Canada you get used to a lot of road miles. You keep yourself sharp by doing 50,000 kilometres in the UK, driving on ice and snow.” He said that he learned a few things about travelling in Europe over the years. “The Europeans are pretty on the ball about Canadians,” said Campbell. “It’s sort of a contrast from Americans who are somewhat innocent in that they are ignorant. In it’s

own way, that’s forgivable. If you grew up in Arkansas, only saw local news, and only read the local paper, you may not know much about the world except who you’re country is attacking. Canadians are a pretty bright and worldly bunch though, but in other ways they choose to tune out. Call it the ‘beer’s cold, can’t bitch’ syndrome. Really, why do Canadians want to hear that Alberta doesn’t have a program for their oil revenue where each one of them has a $1 million in the bank like Norway? Well, the steak is good so please don’t tell me the ducks are dying in Fort McMurray.” He’s also learned not to take for granted what we have right here. “I was in Oslo, Nor-

way and it was the last two shows of the latest tour. I was taken to the best steak restaurant and the mushroom sauce, vegetables and salad were incredible. The steak arrives and it was like horsemeat. It cost about $100 Canadian. Such a strange thing to be paying so much for something this gristly, without much meat. Spend $15 on a steak here (in Canada) and you are really going to enjoy it,” said Campbell. And Campbell is no stranger to doing lots of travelling in Canada as well. He supported Frankie Boyle on his 120 date nationwide tour, did his own solo tour across the country, was nominated for Best Headliner at the Chortle Awards, performed

on Dave’s One Night Stand, Russell Howard’s Good News and Michael Macintyre’s Comedy Roadshow and hosted Ed’s Night Party. He is also no stranger to Cranbrook. “My father was based out of Calgary, but he used to sell shoes and boots door to door. Out here, we were friends with the Swansons. Pretty neat group. Going out to the lake in summer was one of my most cherished moments.” This area was also where he learned that there is such an animal as an attack duck. You may be lucky enough to hear him tell the tale this evening at the Key City Theatre.

It’s not too early to sign up for Mudd, Sweat & Tears obstacle run Panorama prepares for hundreds of fitness buffs, runners and adventure-seekers to descend on the resort to compete in the inaugural Mudd, Sweat & Tears Rockies obstacle course mud run on September 12th, 2015. Mudd, Sweat & Tears Canada (MST) – an all-Canadian adventure racing company – recently confirmed Panorama as the 7th stop on their 2015 national schedule. Only 3.5 hours from Calgary, AB in the heart of the Purcell Mountain

range near Invermere, the event promises to deliver 8kms of mudsoaked crawling, trail running, and climbing over a series of natural and signature obstacles. “As the host venue for a variety of downhill skiing, Nordic and mountain bike events, coupled with their expansive and varied terrain, Panorama was the logical choice for a long-term race location in the area,” stated John Reed of Mudd, Sweat & Tears Canada. “The resort’s family friendly alpine village

feel, stunning vistas and super steeps are completed by the perfect mix of trails, terrain and open areas that we look for”. “Panorama is the perfect outdoor event destination”, stated Patrick Gillespie, Race and Mountain Events Manager, at Panorama Mountain Resort. “Very few locations have the diversity of activities and natural terrain that we have and our track record of hosting major outdoor events was a natural fit with Mudd,

Sweat & Tears”, stated Gillespie”. Obstacle course racing is one of the latest fitness trends to move everyone from adrenaline aficionados to routine health buffs. MST focuses on designing obstacles and races customized to the venue - from ski resorts and famous landmarks to urban city centres, each course is chosen and designed with Canada’s ultimate outdoor adventure terrain in mind. For 2015, the MST will be introducing a “Get in the Mudd” program which gives beginners a challenging but less-extreme option at the most difficult obstacles on the course. This new program makes this popular

Subaru VIZIV2 The Subaru concept crossover utility hybrid shown is a four-door version of a previously revealed two-door. Get this: Subaru says its “athletic, rugged shape of the sides seem designed in the image of a muscular NHL defenceman, and the fenders flare in a sturdy style.” Ahem. Looks like it came out of the Nissan/Infiniti design studios, and that’s not a criticism. Toyota FT1 Toyota was all about the roar of the engines in Montreal, which certainly pleased the gathered Quebec auto journos, who to a man/woman always appear to be race crazy to me (Given the market reality in Quebec, that doesn’t appear to be reflected in car buyer choices). Nevertheless, most would surely enjoy the sleek lines of the Toyota FT-1, designed to be at home on the track and a heck of a ticket magnet on the highway. Up next is the Toronto Show, which takes the name The Canadian International Auto Show. Bite your lip, Morgan. The Calgary show follows, then the new-look, re-imagined Vancouver International Auto Show debuts March 24-29.

Future collector cars: five cars to buy now

2012/2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 By Grant Stoecker Most 5- to 10-year-old cars are just used cars, destined to head steadily to the bottom of their depreciation curve as an intermediate stop on the way to their ultimate destination— the local pick-and-pull lot. Here are five used cars that deserve a cushy spot in the Garage Mahal of a collector: 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP coupe: Pontiac’s demise during GM’s bankruptcy was a sad story, and the loss of this fantastic sports car made it even more bitter. The Solstice roadster was an attractive car that suffered from terminal packaging problems. The Sol-

stice coupe was drop-dead gorgeous and far more practical. Just 1,200 were built before GM did the equivalent of burning, pillaging and sowing salt in the field—they killed Pontiac, offed the Solstice and closed the Delaware plant in which it was built. Used coupes with normal miles have barely depreciated and low mileage cars are already appreciating. 2006 Chrysler Crossfire SRT6: The 2006 Crossfire SRT6 is undoubtedly the greatest lovechild of the affair between Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz in the early 2000s. While the standard Crossfire coupe and convertible where

offered from 2004-2008, the SRT6 was only available in showrooms in 2005, and as a factory special order in 2006. This Chrysler/Benz mashup was essentially a MercedesBenz SLK32 AMG redressed as a hardtop coupe with breakneck performance, featuring a handcrafted AMG supercharged V-6 laying down 330

hp to the rear wheels. Hindsight is always 20/20, and the only regrettable decision in development of the car was to offer only the AMG signature automatic transmission, making it the only model in the Crossfire lineup not offered with a 5-speed manual. Fewer than 1,500 were produced, making this model quite rare.

2005-2011 Lotus Elise: While the Lotus Elise’s last model year technically was 2011, they still are being produced as a stopgap model until the 3rd generation model is released. Unfortunately, the Elise lost its smart airbag exemption stateside, meaning that the only Lotus available in North America is the all-too-

2012/2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302: This special edition of Ford’s ever-popular Mustang saw the return of the late ’60s and early ’70s Trans Am legend, the Boss 302. The Boss got its original name in the late ’60s when it was a skunk works project at Ford. Whenever asked what they were working on, members of the team simply responded “the boss’s car,” and the nomenclature stuck. The new generation features a retuned 5.0, putting out an additional 32 hp, and enough track day goodies to make any racing enthusiast giddy at even the slightest thought of it. In addition to the standard Boss, an additional Laguna Seca variant is available. The LS is a further upgrade with racecar parts, including a rear cross brace, and is limited to only 750 units per year. The Boss 302 was only produced for its scheduled two-year run, with just 4,000 models made each year, ensuring future collectability. Grant Stoecker writes for Hagerty Insurance. luxurious Evora — it even has air-conditioning and power steering as standard equipment. On a Lotus! For those who still want to enjoy the ever-so-Spartan Elise, consider looking to the used car market. However, buyers might want to be wary of HPDE and track cars, as these have probably seen quite a bit of abuse — Elises with salvage titles are prevalent. 1999-2009 Honda S2000: Possibly the best enthusiast car produced under the Honda badge in the past decade, the S2000 served as a fitting tribute to the S-series roadsters of the 1960s. With its aggressive styling, a highrevving 4-cylinder engine producing 237 hp, an ultra-low center of gravity, and 50/50 weight distribution, an unmolested S2000 is bound to be a future collector car. However, due to the affordability of the S2000, many have suffered a cruel and all-too-usual punishment at the hands of the “Fast and Furious” generation. Serious collectors should look for the rarer Club Racer model, which saw limited production in 2007 only.

Hugs: To Dr. Amy & staff at Steeples Clinic for their kindness & compassion at the loss of Keena. She was loved by everyone & will always be missed with smiles and tears by Betty, Jim & family.

Hugs: To the staff at Target in Cranbrook. We are sorry to see the friendly, pleasant and helpful staff have to stop doing a great job. Other large employers could learn a lot from these folks in how to deal with customers. Target was a bright, clean and uncluttered store with great staff and we will miss you all.

Hugs: Big, big hugs to the entire staff at Target, I appreciate the professionalism that has always been shown to customers, and it is such a shame that Target has chosen this route, but the workers are not the bad guys, back to the saying if you cannot say anything nice then say nothing at all. These ladies and gentlemen are just trying to make a living like everyone else. Hugs: To the fine staff at Target who, despite the store’s few problems, gave us such good service. The negative remarks made towards Target’s employees recently were totally unnecessary and no doubt made by individuals who obviously prefer other stores lousy service. Thanks for the good service, Target’s folks, and good luck in your search for new jobs. Hugs: A big hug and thanks to the young man who stopped to help push my car out of a snow bank on 9th St S. To all my lady friends trying to help, thank you too. Chivalry still exists! Hugs: We would like to thank the Culinary Arts program at the COTR for the fabulous lunch we were served at the Class Act Dining Room. Wow!
