Report shows steady drop in substance use among local youth ARNE PETRYSHEN

Cranbrook RCMP vehicles are pictured in a Southview neighbourhood street during a manhunt for a fleeing suspect Thursday morning. The suspect was taken into custody later that afternoon up Gold Creek area.

Break-in suspect leads police in daylong manhunt FOR THE TOWNSMAN

A combined effort by a number of detachments and units including a helicopter resulted in the arrest of four individuals believed to be involved in a break and enter. The incident started just before midnight on Jan 28 when Cranbrook RCMP received a report of an alarm at a

local pawnshop. Upon attendance police found the gates open and a number of items missing. Video surveillance indicated at least three subjects wearing gloves and masks were involved. A short time later officers located two suspects at a local motel who were arrested in relation to the break in. While

arresting the male and female, noise was heard coming from the bathroom. RCMP entered the bathroom and found the window was taken out and it appeared someone had exited through the window. Moments later a black VW Jetta was seen leaving from behind the motel. The vehicle took off at a high rate of speed toward

Fernie. Officers conducted patrols toward Fernie, when they observed the suspect vehicle coming towards them 177km per hour. Officers activated their emergency equipment in an attempt to stop the vehicle; it did not stop and in fact sped up.

A recent report that looks at the health of B.C. youth shows improvements when it comes to injuries and substance abuse for students in the East Kootenay region. The report is released every five years by the McCreary Centre Society. “There’s been a steady decline in substance use,” said Dean Nicholson, executive director at East Kootenay Addiction Services Society. “The number of youth reporting using alcohol has dropped. The number of youth reporting using marijuana has dropped. And the other drugs that youth get tested for have dropped or are at such low levels that they are stable. No substance that was looked at had increased.” The East Kootenay Addiction Services Society also does a every two years survey. This was the first year that both surveys came out in the same year. “McCreary and I worked together on comparing our surveys,” Nicholson said. “It was nice to see that our results really mirrored what McCreary was seeing. Across Canada there has been a general decline in substance use.” He said it is difficult to say whether it is just a trend that we’re going through culturally or real change. “There’s been — certainly in the province and I think nationally — an attempt to shift the way substance use prevention is done — away from a fear-based scare tactic kind of thing, to having it

be much more about accurate information and discussion with the target group.”

“I think we’re recognizing that a more helpful goal is to honestly engage with kids about what their experience is. And come from a position of honest knowledge brokers and encouraging discussion.” Dean Nicholson

He said engaging the target group in discussions has been positive in his experience. “I think there’s been a tendency to say, especially with adolescents, drugs use, substance use is a problem period, without defining what do we mean by a problem and why is it a problem.” For instance, he said that if someone is coming to meet with students and their assumption is students shouldn’t be using any substances or any substance use indicates a problem, then right away it’s going to be hard for them to engage with the kids.” He said one of the reasons for that is that the kids will recognize that there is substance use amongst their peers and for many of them are not experiencing problems.

Child advocacy group needs new logo Tre vor Cr awley

A province-wide child development and advocacy group is looking for a new logo and needs help from the public. The B.C. Association for Child Development and Intervention is undergoing a rebrand and is engaging with communities across the province to solicit some creative submissions from families and youth. In Cranbrook, the Com-

munity Connections Society of Southeast BC offers services to the Kootenay region and operates under the umbrella of the BCACDI. “We’re just asking them to draw us a logo, design one on a computer, whatever means they have and send them into BCACDI,” said Jason Gordon, who advocates for the BCACDI. “It’s a contest, so in late February we’re going to

Reports lists youth health survey results Continued from page 1 There are concerns raised about mental health aspect. Mental health results showed that 27 per cent of East Kootenay girls and 19 per cent of boys reported a mental health condition. Those include Depression, ADHD or Anxiety Disorder. The study found that girls were also more likely than boys to have deliberately harmed themselves in the past year, and to have seriously thought about and attempted suicide. The community connections society in Cranbrook is a member agency of our provincial association,” Gordon said. “We though it’d be a nice way to raise our profile and involve the families that receive services from our member agencies by participating in a local contest. So it’s our provincial as-

sociation that is doing the logo revamp and redesign and we’ve been trying to get some local involvement through our member agencies.” Submissions can be emailed to jason@bcacdi. org or hand mailed to: BCACDI Attn: Jason Gordon 29191 OKM Kelowna, B.C. V1W 4A7

Police Dog Services attended and deployed the spike belt on Highway 3, just east of Cranbrook, the suspect Jetta managed to evade the belt and continued into Cranbrook. A second RCMP member attempted to stop the vehicle but again the vehicle managed to maneuver around the police vehicle. Due to safety concerns the pursuit was terminated as the vehicle continued at a high rate of speed down the Cranbrook strip, running red lights. Extensive patrols failed to locate the black Jetta.

Later in the morning the black VW Jetta was found abandon, which had been stolen out of Alberta, in the Southview area of Cranbrook. Area residents alerted police to two suspects seen in the area. Police converged on the area and were able to locate and arrest one subject. Extensive patrols failed to locate the second subject and police asked residents to be vigilant and call 911 if the subject was seen. Shortly after noon a resident contacted police when he observed a suspect fitting the descripting checking vehicles. Police headed to the area and while on route noted a grey Ford

Pickup leaving the area with the suspect driving. Emergency equipment was activated but the driver failed to stop. Due the erratic driving behavior police did not pursue the suspect but attempted to monitor its location using unmarked units. Numerous units were dispatched to various parts of Cranbrook and highways to contain the area. A local helicopter was deployed and began searching the area. The stolen truck was seen traveling out of the Cranbrook on Gold Creek Road. A police observer was able to direct units on the ground toward the vehicle. The driver then got the truck

stuck in the snow, which allowed police to move in without the risk of the driver fleeing. The male was taken into custody with the assistance of a police dog. Police were very concerned about the erratic driving observed and employed a helicopter to safely search and monitor the stolen vehicle to reduce the risk to the public. The investigation is very involved and is still ongoing. Different names and identification has been found and police are in the midst of confirming their identity. Police are also learning that some of the subjects may have outstanding warrants and could

have been involved in other incidents. Three males and one female are facing a number of Criminal Code charges and police plan to hold a bail hearing Friday. S/Sgt Dave Dubnyk, NCO i/c of Cranbrook Detachment says, “this was an excellent combined effort by Cranbrook, Kimberley, Southeast District Traffic Units, Police Dog Service, Forensic Identification Section and General Investigation Section which led to the successful arrest of four individuals. “ Police would like to thank the public for their calls and assistance in locating the suspects.

“I think we’re recognizing that a more helpful goal is to honestly engage with kids about what their experience is,” he said. “And come from a position of honest knowledge brokers and encouraging discussion.” The study found that although local students were more likely than their peers across the province to have tried tobacco, alcohol or marijuana, there were local decreases in the percentages who had done so. “There has been a big emphasis on reducing tobacco use. That’s been a 20 year project or more, and we’ve seen a decrease,” he said. “Also in B.C. we have some of the toughest drinking driving laws, so I think there’s been a message of safety and in some cases there are going to be harsh penalties from a legal perspective around the safety aspect, not necessarily around whether using is right or wrong.” In the past year, the study found a third of students were injured seriously enough to require medical attention. This percentage was higher than the rate across BC for both males (37 per cent vs. 30 per cent provincially) and females (29 per cent vs. 24 per cent provincially). However, this was a local decrease, from 43 per cent in 2003 and 38 per cent in 2008. More than one in five students experienced a concussion in the past year (26 per cent of males vs. 17 per cent of females). Mirroring what was seen provincially, 16 per cent of youth who had a concussion had not accessed needed medical help.

ICBC frauds include fires, faked crashes Tom Fle tc her Black Press

If you’ve ever had a car insurance claim greeted with suspicion by ICBC, there are a few hundred reasons for that attitude. B.C.’s basic car insurance monopoly has released a report on fraud attempts from 2014, part of an estimated 10 to 15 per cent of insurance claims it says in-

volve fraud or exaggeration. During the year, ICBC investigators referred 131 cases to Crown prosecutors for charges, with convictions in nine out of 10 of them. ICBC highlighted some of the efforts to obtain insurance coverage that should not have been paid, and how investigators responded.

• A customer reported his truck was stolen at a movie theatre. The vehicle was recovered, burnt. A vehicle inspection showed the burnt truck had serious mechanical problems, contrary to what the customer told ICBC. The customer’s cellphone records revealed that he was at the scene where the burnt vehicle was found.

Facing the dragon “Daenerys Targaryen is no maid, however. She is…a mother of dragons.” So writes George R.R. Martin, describing a main character from his ‘Songs of Fire and Ice’ series (Game of Thrones). Daenerys is a young exiled woman who is planning to claim the throne of the Seven Kingdoms with the help of three dragons. Although she has raised the dragons from birth, one — Drogon — is not easily controlled. In the fifth book of the series, ‘A Dance With Dragons,’ Drogon kills and eats a small child. Although heartbroken, no one is terribly surprised, as that is what dragons do. J.K. Rowling, C.S. Lewis, Anne McCaffrey, Christopher Paolini, Lewis Carroll, Robert Munsch, Frank L. Baum, Andrew Lang, Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare, Kenneth Grahame, E. Nesbit, Gerald Durrell, Terry Pratchett, Stephen King, and Cressida Cowell are just a very small sample of authors who have written books about dragons. These reptilian fire-breathing giants (which for some reason appear in every culture throughout history) are typically either evil monsters bent on destruction, or are kind and bring good luck. There has been a recent increase in another type, one of the bumbling fool, which tends to be found now in stories for young readers. In 2010 ‘The Guardian’ newspaper stated the dragon from J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ was easily one of, if not the, “best dragons in literature.” The dragon’s

BOOKNOTES

Mike Selby name in this story is Smaug. Smaug is perfect name for this terror who has decimated towns, stolen treasure, and exiled the dwarves. The word “smaug” would be the past tense of the old Germanic word “smugen,” which means to squeeze through a hole. It is also past tense for “smeogan,” an Old Norse word for penetrating; and “smeagan” in Old English, meaning “crafty.” The Germanic word “smugen” also appears in Old English, this time meaning to creep. Squeeze, creep, crafty, and penetrating. Smaug’s very name was enough to keep the population of Middle Earth away from him. This was Tolkien’s first stroke of genius with the dragon. The second stemmed from his disappointment from all other dragon stories. Those dragons were fierce and malevolent, but not very interesting. So Tolkien has Bilbo (the hobbit of ‘The Hobbit) not only face Smaug but talk directly to him. It is not so much Smaug’s replies which readers found striking, but his manner of speech. Smaug talks with the exact hostile civility of the British upper class. “You seem familiar with my name,” he

tells Bilbo, “but I don’t seem to remember smelling you before.” Did he say “smelling” because he can’t see Bilbo, or as an insult? Tolkien knew this type of speech well. He was an undergraduate at Oxford when the First World War broke out. Although his education gave him an officer’s rank, he was not of “proper stock.” He was not only beneath his fellow officers, but as an orphan, had no family standing either. He knew all too well what someone meant when they can “smell” you. The third stroke of genius was Tolkien’s refusal to send any of the typical and cliched heroes to deal with Smaug. Instead he sends Bilbo, who is so modern and unaccustomed to such things that he is very much the spitting image of us. The dwarves, the elves, the men — all share a common characteristic: they are without fear. Everyone in ‘The Hobbit’ (besides Bilbo) is ready to face any foe, and more than happy to die trying. Feelings of not being enough haunts Bilbo at most every turn. Yet it is Bilbo who sneaks down a tunnel to face the dragon. “Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did … He fought the real battle in that tunnel alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay ahead.” Tolkien lays great stress on this scene, and as one reviewer noted “No one can fight a dragon, but everyone can fight fear.” Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

The customer pleaded guilty to providing a false statement, was fined $4,000 and ordered to pay ICBC back more than $3,000 for investigative and claims costs. • A customer who was prohibited from driving claimed his vehicle had been stolen at the time it was involved in a three-vehicle crash. Forensic testing of residue on the vehicle’s driver-side airbag revealed a DNA match to the customer and

proved he was the driver at the time of the crash. The customer was found guilty of providing a false statement, fined $1,000 and ordered to pay ICBC back more than $18,000 in claims costs and total loss payments for the other two vehicles involved. • A customer told ICBC his Honda Civic was parked outside his home when it was struck by an unknown vehicle that fled the scene. Damage was not

consistent with a hitand-run and paint flecks matching the customer’s Civic were found embedded in a vehicle from another hit-and-run claim. When confronted with this evidence, the driver of the Civic admitted to making a false claim, as he had fled the crash scene after his vehicle struck another. Fine: $1,000, plus $5,600 in claim and repair costs. • A customer with only basic insurance

and an expired driver’s licence rear-ended another vehicle. The customer asked the driver in the other vehicle to tell ICBC the crash happened a day later so she could buy optional insurance, which would cover the damage to her vehicle. The other driver refused. The underinsured customer then bought optional insurance on her way home from the crash. She was assessed the $7,400 cost of repairs to both vehicles.

Election for Blackmore and Oler trials postponed again Brian L awrence Creston Valley Advance

The decision for four members of the Bountiful polygamist community to be tried by judge or jury was put off in Creston Law Courts this morning by Judge Ron Webb. Winston Blackmore, James Oler, Brandon Blackmore and Emily Blackmore were to select their choice of trial today, having previously appeared in court Dec. 9 for the same purpose. “We’re making good progress in advising Mr. Blackmore as to his options,” said Winston’s lawyer by phone. Winston, who did not appear, and Oler lead separate factions in Bountiful, and were charged in August with polygamy, the indict-

ment alleging Blackmore has 24 wives and Oler four. Crown counsel Tom Arbogast explained there are “multiple terabytes of disclosure” to go through while the decision is being made. “It’s a fairly unwieldy process,” he said. The election date for Winston and Oler’s trial was moved to March 26. Oler, Emily and Brandon have been charged with unlawfully removing a child under 16 from Canada with the intent that an offence of a sexual nature would be committed outside Canada. Their election date was put off until Feb. 26; Oler plans to be working in Athabasca, Alta., and will appear by phone. “We do have some

concerns about this matter getting dragged out,” said Arbogast. Also today, Emily asked to have her passport returned so that she can shop in the U.S., mainly for herbs; she took the herbal practitioner course at Creston’s College of the Rockies. “We have spoken to the RCMP and there’s a belief there could be a flight risk,” said Arbogast. She and Brandon are charged with “wrongful removal of a child from Canada,” he added, and it is believed they have an “extensive network of contacts in Utah and Arizona.” “I have responsibilities,” responded Emily. “I’ll return.” COTR instructor Ra-

chel Beck stood up on behalf of Emily. “Her commitment to her family is so strong,” said Beck, who offered to act as surety if the passport is returned. Webb asked Emily to present material on Feb. 26 showing him reason to return the passport, saying that shopping in the U.S. made the passport “nice to have as opposed to compelling.” Winston and Emily previously appeared in court Dec. 4 to say they had retained counsel. Oler, whose faction is said to keep close ties with the followers of Warren Jeffs in the U.S., sent a similar message through Crown counsel. They initially appeared Oct. 9 without counsel, after being charged in August.

1. Get moving! Get yourself and your dog(s) off the couch and into the outdoors. Most dogs need walking at least twice daily to stay healthy and you will benefit too. If you don’t have a dog, why not volunteer to walk dogs at your local shelter?

2. ID your pet. The SPCA reunites thousands of lost animals with their families every year. Many animals are never claimed, however, and must be adopted into new homes because they have no ID. Ensure your pets have identification tags on their collar and a microchip or ear tattoo, and keep the information updated.

3. Bake and share cupcakes. Take part in National Cupcake Day on Feb. 23 and help end animal cruelty one cupcake at a time. The money you raise baking and distributing cupcakes by donation will help the BC SPCA rescue, re-home and provide emergency services for injured and abandoned animals in B.C. Get involved by registering online at nationalcupcakeday.ca. 4. The fix is in. Help spread the word about the crucial importance of spaying or neutering pets – or make a donation to your local shelter to help with spay/ neuter programs. Thousands of unwanted animals are born in B.C. each year – often with tragic consequences.

5. Adopt, don’t shop. If you are considering getting a new pet make the SPCA or another animal shelter your first adoption option. Avoid buying pets from online sites — you may be supporting puppy mills by buying this way. 6. Make humane food choices. Commit to purchasing foods raised according to high standards of animal welfare. Look for SPCA Certified products in the meat and dairy sections of your grocery store. You can find out where to buy SPCA Certified products at spcacertified.ca.

7. Sign up for the BC SPCA Kids Club. Connect the young animal lovers in your life with other like-minded youth through an annual BC SPCA Kids Club membership ($15). 8. Make the Switch. Switch the toxic ethylene glycol antifreeze in your vehicle to pet-friendly, propylene-based antifreeze.

9. Donate your time or money. Help a homeless or wild animal get the care they need. The BC SPCA’s priority funds let you choose which program or service to support, including cruelty investigations, sheltering, wildlife rehabilitation, education and advocacy. Or give of yourself – the BC SPCA simply could not function without the help of our nearly 4,000 amazing volunteers across the province. 10. Sign up! Sign up for the 2015 Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walk in your community this September and help us raise urgently needed funds for abused, homeless, neglected and injured animals. Is God a Seahawk’s fan?

T

hree years ago, I wrote a column about Tim Tebow, the Denver Broncos quarterback who used to kneel publicly after every touchdown and hold his hand to his head as he offered a prayer of thanks. The practice was often called “Tebowing.” Back then, I wrote that I didn’t think God was really a football fan, or that God controls the outcome of any game. “Frankly,” I wrote, “I don’t think God cares.” That column caused someone to write a letter to the editor and disagree with me. It seems that there are many who disagree with me. According to the Public Religion Research Institute and Religion News Service, 25 per cent of Americans believe God actually does decide who will win the Super Bowl. The same poll found that over 50 per cent of Americans believe that God rewards faithful athletes with success in sporting events. Some athletes believe the same thing. The recent semi–final game saw the Seattle Seahawks engineer an amazing overtime comeback against the Green Bay Packers. Seahawk quarterback Russell Wilson threw an astonishing four interceptions. It seemed almost certain that the Packers would win, foiling the Seahawks’ attempt to repeat as Super Bowl champs. But they didn’t. After the game, Wilson claimed that God caused both the four interceptions and the spectacular reversal: “That’s God setting it up, to make it dramatic, so rewarding, so special.” Now a skeptic might ask, “What would Wilson have said if the Seahawks had lost? Would he have seen his four intercepted passes as the result of God’s will or divine displeasure rather than his own mediocre passing? Would he have blamed God for the loss?” Athletes, of course, are noticeably silent

about God’s will when their team is defeated. Then they have to show patience with the trials and tribulations of life, but that doesn’t make news or a good testimony on the popular Christianity circuit even though such endurance may reflect a deeper faith than the praises of the fortunate. Now I don’t expect Russell Wilson, Tim Tebow, or other athletes to be sophisticated theologians. Wilson is a fine young man who has used his celebrity status to help others. His relationship Rev. Yme with Jesus has made a difference in his life, and I deWoensdregt light in that. But there’s a problem with this kind of thinking. To think that winning is the result of God’s favour also means that losing is a sign of God’s displeasure. If God really plays favourites in this way, then the losers in the game of life, whether on the field or off, are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t.” Their skills and commitment make little difference if God has already determined the outcome. Secondly, does God really choose favourites in this way? I don’t think so. I would say that God loves all people, regardless of which team they play for, regardless of which nation they live in, regardless of which way they practice their own faith. Thirdly, I don’t think that when we believe in God, we also need to assert that divine providence determines everything from sporting contests to car accidents, cancer, and business success. The book of Job in the Bible explored this theme over 2,500 years ago. Does God reward the faithful and punish the unrighteous? Job is a righteous man, but everything falls apart in his life, He loses his children, wealth, social standing, and health. He finally comes to the conclusion that being faithful does not necessarily

mean success in life. Nor can Job believe that God unilaterally determines our destinies, for good or ill. The story helps us understand, I think, that we live in a wild and amazing universe which contains pockets of chaos. The events of our lives are usually the result of the interplay of many events, including divine providence (that is, God’s decisions or vision), human freedom, genetic and meteorological factors beyond our control, and sheer randomness. Sometimes an amazing catch is not an “immaculate reception” ordained by God; it may be just skill, or dumb luck, or a ball tipped into the hands of a skilled player nearby. Sometimes a wonderful comeback is not determined by God deciding to make it more dramatic, but by the amazing skill of these athletes. I am sure that God was there — but not as a miracle worker or team mascot. God was there urging the players to achieve their best as team members, to be sportsmanlike, and to remain healthy amid a rough and tumble game. I suspect God was indifferent to the ultimate outcome. Perhaps Aaron Rodgers, the Packer quarterback, who is also a Christian, was closer to the truth when he responded to a question about whether his faith was shaken at his team’s loss. “I don’t think God cares a whole lot about the outcome. He cares about the people involved, but I don’t think He’s a big football fan.” To that, I can only say “Amen”. I’m going to be cheering for the Seahawks (since the Broncos aren’t playing). But at the end of the day, I’ll be at peace regardless of the result. There are so many more important things than the Super Bowl that God actually does care about — feeding the hungry, giving comfort to the vulnerable, remaining faithful and open– hearted as we endure the realities of pain, sickness and defeat. The 2nd Cranbrook Gymnasium and Recreation Club Building JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now

Jim Cameron

B

uilt by the Methodist congregation and opened in early 1906, the first Cranbrook Gymnasium and Recreation Club building proved immediately popular with the young men of the community, young men for whom the Methodists wished to provide an alternative to the “darker” side of life easily found within the community. It was a substantial building, constructed immediately behind the small Methodist Church on the northeast corner of 8th Avenue and 1st Street. Within a few years, however, it became apparent that the facility was lacking something, something which the Methodists decreed to be none other than a swimming pool. With the Gyro outdoor swimming pool some 20 years in the future there was, for those of an aquatic persuasion, nothing to be done in the cold months of the year. So saying, Reverend W.E. Dunham, in October 1911, laid public the plans for a newer, bigger and better gymnasium and recreation club by way of the addition of a large indoor swimming pool. The necessary funding appeared in short order, with construction slated to begin in November despite fears of frosts preventing connection to the city sewer lines. Still, as is often the case, time slipped by and it was not until March 1912, that local architect F.S. Rosseter unveiled plans for the new structure. Erected immediately to the rear of the earlier gymnasium, the building was to feature two storeys upon a full basement (which the first building lacked), and both a larger gym and reading room. Plans changed somewhat in the ensuing months with, at first, a decision to move the original gym across the street before adding to it and then, by September 1912, to abandon the first building completely and construct the second gymnasium and recreation building directly across the street on an empty lot on the southwest corner of 8th Avenue and 1st Street. The contract was awarded to local builders Baker & Banfield in October and preparation began soon after with the excavation of the lot. It all went well with the exception of W.E. Worden’s team of horses, while

The location of Cranbrook’s first indoor swimming pool on the corner of 8th Avenue and 1st Street is now a parking lot – Cameron 2014 clearing the ground, becoming temporarily (it is hoped) lost in a cesspool present on the property, which undoubtedly says something for the state of the city’s sewage system at the time. By late November, aided by mild weather, the concrete foundation was nearly complete. The building officially opened on March 21, 1913. The large, wooden, rectangular structure may have been lacking in elegance — it was, in fact, little more than a very large, rectangular box (thus predating the majority of Cranbrook commercial construction for decades to come) — but its mere existence made up for any cosmetic shortfalls. Measuring 30 by 80 feet and standing nearly two-anda-half storeys tall (the basement was situated partially above ground level), it met with general public approval. General entrance was achieved via a broad staircase leading to a first floor verandah, onwards to a 16 by 20 foot entrance hall and then to the gymnasium itself. The gym measured 30 by 60 feet with a 16-and-a-half foot ceiling surrounded by 10foot wainscoting and 12 windows. A 20 by 29 foot room directly over the entrance hall

constituted the combination reading room/spectators gallery, closed off from the gym by sliding windows. Basement stairs and a corridor led to the swimming pool, hereafter referred to as a “tank,” according to the custom of the day. The solid cement, 20 by 40 foot tank, ranging from three to seven feet deep, was situated towards one corner of the tank room with a locker room, a dressing room, a furnace room, lavatories and “shower baths” in conjunction. It was proudly declared that the swimming tank was larger than those of the Spokane and Vancouver YMCAs of the time. A coal-fired furnace provided steam to maintain the water at 75F (24C) throughout the year. The gym was soon supplied with gymnastic, basketball, handball, indoor baseball and tennis equipment. Notably, the Methodists decreed the building open to men of all religions, a departure from the majority of the local clubs and lodges of the day. Further, it was decided to form a Ladies Auxiliary to the also newly formed “Young Men’s Club” that would see to the needs of the ladies who were allowed to utilize the building every Monday afternoon and Thursday evening.

The Young Men’s Club did well over the next few years despite the gaps left by the young men going to war but, by the mid-1920s, things were not going as well. Social and entertainment functions in the gym helped to keep it afloat but it appears athletes of the town gradually took to pursuits elsewhere. By 1926, plans were afoot for the building to become home to the Great War Veterans Association (the present day Royal Canadian Legion) but fell through when the vets constructed their own building on Baker Street the following year. The old gym maintained an occasional presence within the athletic scene into the 1930s, but was gradually converted to apartments on the upper levels and joined by Stewart’s Auto Wreckers in the basement. A fire in 1954 did considerable damage but the old building lingered, little more than a vacant eyesore until it was renovated in the 1960s and used once again as a commercial/ residential property. It was demolished a number of years ago and the site is now a parking lot containing no hint of Cranbrook’s first indoor swimming pool. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

Through the jungle, through the dark Ice come home for seven-game stand in search of consistency Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

The 2014-15 WHL campaign has been an up-and-down affair for the Kootenay Ice. With a seven-game homestand on the horizon, the hope is the comforts of home cooking and familiar beds will help the team establish some consistency heading down the stretch. “If we take care of ourselves off the ice, we should be fine physically and mentally,” said Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill Thursday afternoon. “We know how much the last part of the season means to get yourself ready and in the right frame of mind for playoffs. “Anytime you’re at home and you’re in your own bed in your comfortable surroundings, it’s a bonus. It should be a little bit of an advantage.” Following a 6-3 road loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes, the lowest-ranked team not only in the Central Division but also the entire WHL, the Kootenay Ice re-

turned to Cranbrook and took Thursday away from practice in hopes of resting up with 22 games remaining on the slate. Wednesday’s loss to Lethbridge represents the third defeat to a WHL team out of the playoff race so far in the month of January for the Ice. Earlier in January, the Ice dropped a pair of games to the Saskatoon Blades (6-4 Jan. 10 and 3-2 Jan. 17), another team out of the WHL post-season picture, allowing a total of six points to slip through their grasps with the WHL playoff

race heating up. “We, as a coaching staff take full responsibility in the preparation of our athletes whether it’s a first-place team or a last-place team [we are playing],” McGill said. “After that, it’s all about the commitment to execution and the ability to do it the right way regardless of who you’re playing.” For the McGill and the Ice, the next opponent on the card comes in the form of the Regina Pats. The last time the two teams met, Wyatt Hoflin

Since then, the Pats have undergone a subtle makeover, shipping out the likes of Connor Gay, Kyle Burroughs, Dryden Hunt, Morgan Klimchuk and Brady Reagan. Despite the turnover of staff in Regina, McGill knows not to underestimate the second-place team in the WHL’s East Division. “They’re extremely hard-working, their goaltending is excellent,” McGill said.

“They’ve made a lot of changes but, at the same time, the foundation for their team is still the same. Their forwards play hard. They’re a very simple team. They put pucks behind you. They’re very versatile.” While the Pats represent the first challenge on the seven-game homestand, Saturday’s test might prove to hold more weight in terms of determining what the Kootenay Ice are capable of as the WHL-leading Kelowna Rockets visit Western Financial Place. “You don’t want to

Dynamiters goaltender Brody Nelson bats a shot away against the Creston Valley Thunder Cats Jan. 13. The Nitros and Cats go to battle Friday in Creston with critical points on the line as the KIJHL playoff races heats up.

The Kimberley Dynamiters are set to travel to Creston Valley in search of two vital points Friday. The Dynamiters and Thunder Cats are engaged in a neck-andneck race for second-place in the KIJHL’s Eddie Mountain Division. With seven games remaining on their schedule, the Nitros hold a two-point edge on the Thunder Cats, who have eight games remaining and one in hand on the Dynamiters. The two teams very well could end up as first-round playoff opponents and Friday might prove to be a nice preview of what to expect. “It’s going to be a very

intense game,” said Dynamiters head coach Jerry Bancks. “Like I’ve said since Christmas, I think they’ve been one of the strong teams. They’ve played extremely well. They’re well coached. It’s going to be a very competitive game and they’re as desperate to get home ice as we are. It should be very much a playoff-type atmosphere. We’re looking forward to it.” The divisional playoff format in the KIJHL sees the first-place finisher host the fourth-place team in the first round of post-season action. The second-place team then hosts the third-place team. As it stands, the Nitros hold down second place in the Eddie

They’ve got the complete package. “When you have only eight losses, you know you’re a consistent hockey team that probably uses all four lines and does a good job defensively. We’re going to have our hands full, for sure. But, in saying that, it’s a good test for us to see how long we can

mentally provide ourselves with a strong commitment to staying in the program.” The Rockets roll into Cranbrook in the midst of a four-game road trip, having edged the Red Deer Rebels in overtime Jan. 27 before falling to the Edmonton Oil Kings in overtime Wednesday night. HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’ll wake up with a smile and wear it throughout the day. You could discover that a very combative friend seems to be demanding changes in areas that you would prefer stay the same. Explaining the wisdom of your ways might be important. Tonight: Be spontaneous. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You rarely exaggerate, yet your words will have a loud, extravagant quality to them. A friend at a distance could be far more provocative than you originally had thought. You might have second thoughts about inviting this person into your life. Tonight: Join friends for TGIF! GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Before you act, you might need to evaluate your thoughts and needs. Make yourself aware of the financial implications of a potential change. Talk to someone who understands your situation and has more knowledge than you on the subject at hand. Tonight: Say “yes.”

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You tend to go to extremes emotionally and financially. Be sure you can handle the implications of pursuing a dream before you take off. A friend might encourage you to take a hard look at what you are about to do. Tonight: Have an important discussion. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You might feel the need for more privacy. Schedule time with a friend or loved one whom you enjoy and can share your feelings with. Be willing to shuffle your schedule around in order to suit your mood. You could be surprised by what happens. Tonight: Play it low-key. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Friends surround you. Even someone whom you view as an acquaintance could indicate that you are a friend to him or her. Wherever you go, invitations head your way. Do your best to get into weekend mode. Others seem to await your response. Tonight: Where the gang is. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might want to switch gears

and adapt to a situation involving your personal life. You are likely to have a lot of energy when completing certain tasks by a certain time. Lighten up, and know which direction you are heading in. Tonight: Out with your pals. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Tap into your imagination and distance yourself while seeking a solution to a difficult situation. You could be surprised by what becomes evident as a result. Avoid repeating yourself in a conversation with a loved one or family member. Tonight: Go for a change of pace! SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Be more forthright in your choices. You know what you want. At a certain point, you must act. You will feel better when you have committed to a path. Use caution with a Scorpio today; this person has a way of affecting you. Tonight: Love the one you’re with. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You might decide to move forward with a project that has been on the back burner. A part-

ner could share a lot with you to encourage you to move on this matter. Communication could be powerful if you remain open. Tonight: Say “yes” to an offer that is irresistible. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You could be on top of what you are doing if you would relax and go with the flow of the moment. At this point, structuring plans might be futile, as there is a strong likelihood you will need to change them anyway. A loved one is lucky for you. Tonight: Around good music. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’ll feel very cared about as a loved one demonstrates his or her feelings. You could find yourself in an unusual, creative situation. Right now, you need to follow your instincts. Your deep feelings are right-on. Tonight: Let your imagination rock and roll. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Over the holidays, I stayed at my cousin’s home. My cousin has two children, a daughter and a son. The son is 14 years old. I noticed that the boy’s grandmother slept with him in the same bed. I think she has a weird obsession with the boy. She is constantly touching him and rubbing his back. She always has to sit next to him. She pays very little attention to the younger granddaughter. Worse, the granddaughter told me that her mother also sometimes sleeps with her brother (instead of her dad). I think it is extremely odd for these women to be sleeping with this young man, who also still sleeps with his baby blanket. Isn’t he too old for this? What is wrong with these women? Should I say something? -- More Than a Little Grossed Out Dear More: Yes. We are surprised that a 14-year-old boy wouldn’t object more to the sleeping arrangements, and we suspect he will put a stop to it soon. If the mother and grandmother are doing this over the boy’s objections, however, that is completely inappropriate and potentially abusive. You could ask your cousin about this, saying you find it odd and possibly damaging. You also could mention it to the father, suggesting he step up and protect his son. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Help,” whose husband naps when he gets home and then is up half the night. She seems to think everyone can handle regular nighttime hours. If I slept every night from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., I would be more tired as the week went on, because my body wakes me up multiple times at night. When I don’t set an alarm, I sometimes don’t wake up until 10 hours after I went to bed. If I get up after eight hours, I often need a nap later because I did not get enough actual sleep. While I agree that seeing a doctor might be helpful, his wife can also suggest that he stay up all night one time and then try to sleep from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. He might be able to manage that. -- John Dear John: Why are you getting up so much at night? To use the bathroom? Because something (snoring, apnea, dryness, light, noise) is waking you up? While we understand that not everyone has a “normal” nighttime sleep cycle, a sufficient amount of sleep is important to your health. If the problem is snoring, dry mouth, excessive urination or apnea, please see a doctor to find out whether there is any effective treatment for you. But also check your bedroom to make sure there isn’t a lot of light or noise, or electronic gadgets that glow or vibrate. This, too, can interfere with restful, restorative sleep. Dear Annie: I am responding to “Actively Confused,” whose wife battled cancer and now resents his activities. I am a lung cancer survivor. My wife took care of me for the better part of 18 months, showering me and feeding me through a tube. She also worked full time outside the home. At the time, I didn’t much care what she wanted to do. As I progressed, I realized she needed to get out of the house and do things for herself, even though it meant going without me. That was fine. As my mobility improved, I would do things with her even if those weren’t my favorite things. We both knew that I needed to be more active, or I’d just waste away on the couch. It takes a long time to get your stamina back, and I still haven’t after four years. Together, my wife and I are getting through this, and we both realize that neither one of us is what we used to be. With her, our children and good doctors, nurses, therapists and prayers, I am still here to try. -- Less Active, Not Confused Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
