ith apologies to the Rolling Stones, “Please allow me to introduce myself. I’m a man without wealth or taste.” I have agreed to do a monthly column on things outdoorsy for this paper. And this is the first edition. So I thought I would start by introducing myself and the kinds of

things I hope to write about. Although I was brought up in Ontario and did my University in New Brunswick, I have lived in the Alberni Valley for a very long time, almost 30 years. And during most of that time I worked as a professional forester specializing in reforestation. Because of this work I’ve learned a little about deer, salmon habitats, plant identification, geology, First Nations issues and other stuff I don’t

know I know. I have also owned an adventure travel company, still work as a guide for another travel company and do a little professional photography. I am also an active and avid birder (bird watchers just watch; I listen and observe too). So over the ages that I have prowled the Alberni Valley and the Island too, I have learned a thing or two about the outdoors here. Having lived in an area that is mostly urban or farmland

surfing, soaring, mountain climbing, snowshoeing, skiing, nature observation, geocaching, and taking headers. All of that. And most of it can be done right here in the Alberni Valley, Some of it I’ve never done before and want to try. Some I’m still kind of new at. And some I’m an expert at. So stay tuned. Some of the columns coming up will be about the outdoor activities in the Community Forest, an app for finding trails in the Alberni Valley, the attractions of the Somass Estuary and lots more. We have a lot of exploring to do.

Beauty’s in the eye of the puck holder P

hotographs of Miss Canada in an outrageous hockey-inspired dress went viral last week. It was awesome. When it comes to beauty pageants I’m so ignorant of the topic that not only did I not know there was a category for best national costume in the Miss Universe Pageant for which her dress was designed - but I wasn’t even aware my country still competed in the competition. “I thought we stopped all that silliness back in the ‘80s,” my equally clueless friend said in response to the polarizing pictures. Almost. According to Wikipedia, Miss Canada was founded in 1946 and closed up shop for 16 years between 1993 and 2008. It was

What’s Better than

bothered by her in the least. Quite the opposite—I’m proud of her. She gained worldwide attention for Canada in a lighthearted way and she almost had me tuning in to watch the Miss Universe Pageant for the first time since I was a child. “How could this possibly interest you?” one of my friends groaned when she saw the pictures. “It’s so ugly. And why hockey? That’s such a Canadian stereotype. Might as well dress up like a giant beaver or an Eskimo in an igloo.” Hmm. Maybe next year. After choosing from 30 different concepts, our current Miss Canada decided on hockey as her theme—a sport our country is universally known for. Continued / A14

of the beholder and reviews have been mixed. Along with the many favourable opinions online, there was even more indicating an immense dislike. Some comments had me laughing out loud and the ones that said, “She’s an embarrassment to Canada,” had me rolling my eyes. I’ve read those exact same five words written about me several times over the years. At least Chanel was fully clothed – who knows what I might have worn in her position. (Clearly my cartoonist Jim Hunt has an idea.) What is so embarrassing about a confident woman with a sense of ha-ha anyway? She didn’t attack, molest, steal or otherwise harm anyone, so I’m not

re-established in 2009, apparently with more of a focus on personality than beauty. Observing Chanel Beckenlehner from Ontario in this funny costume, I would say she scored high on both counts. With 10 hockey sticks fanned out like wings, netting over her Marie-Antoinetteish wig, a Stanley Cup hat on her head and a working scoreboard behind her indicating a 20-14 lead for the home team, I didn’t think it could get much better than that. But then I noticed the rest of the costume that included shoulder and elbow pads, thigh-high boots resembling skates and a billowy ice rink for a skirt. Like her, it was stunning. But, as we all know, beauty is in the eye

THIS THAT New & Consignment

Maggie Hodge-Kwan, a librarian with the Vancouver Island Regional Library at Echo Centre and Charles Thomas from Alberni Valley Transition Towns are excited about a new seed lending library. Yes, you read that right: you can borrow seeds from the library, then “return” them once you’ve harvested your bounty.

Borrow some seeds, lend some seeds SUSTAINABILITY: | Partners hope new seed lending library kickstarts food security program in Valley. KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Take a seed, give a seed—that’s the premise behind the new seed lending library at the Port Alberni library. “You borrow some seeds, you grow them out and harvest the seeds and you return fresh seeds to the library for the next year,” said Alberni Valley Transition Town Society (AVTTS)member Charles Thomas. The seed library is happening thanks to a partnership between the library and Transition Town with grant money

from Island Health (VIHA). Transition Town has ties to VIHA through their food hub initiative, an effort by VIHA to support food security planning in various communities. The society is currently in the process of setting one up in the Alberni Valley and has grant money from VIHA for the project. “It’s trying to maintain seed lines and develop a mechanism for maintaining seed lines within the community so we always have seeds,” said Thomas. In 2012, Helene Dufour, VIHA’s community’s nutritionist sent Maggie

Hodge Kwan, children and youth customer services librarian at the library, an e-mail about a seed lending library in a different community. Hodge Kwan took the idea to AVTTS. “I talked about it, there was some enthusiasm and so we got started,” Hodge Kwan said. The key to getting the seed lending library off the ground was securing enough seeds. “Quite a few of the ones we have are from local farmers and gardeners but we’ve had donations as well from companies like Saltspring Seeds,

Westcoast Seeds and Acre Creek Heirloom Seeds,” said Hodge Kwan. “We’ve got a nice wide variety of different kinds of vegetables and we’re ready to have the public consume them.” The seeds are free to the public and work on an honour system. Take what you need and return what you can to help keep the seed lending library going. All you need is a library card. The seed lending library is hosting a launch at the library in Echo Centre on Wednesday, Feb. 4 from 2-4 p.m. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Students raise awareness for Doctors Without Borders Tyson Laderoute Cody De Adder, and Jake Maillet from Anne Ostwald’s Social Justice 12 class put on a presentation on Wednesday, January 21st 2015 to create awareness for the organization Doctors Without Borders. The amount of people who showed was underwhelming, but the Power Point and presentation itself were well put together and very informative. Doctors Without Borders was founded 44 years ago in 1971,

by a small group of French doctors and journalists who believed that all people have the rights to medical care regardless of the race, religion, creed or political affiliation. Their purpose was to limit the devastation of war. Currently they have more than 34,000 volunteers around the world helping with diseases, natural disasters, and war torn areas. Since July 17, 2014 Ebola has been an

issue that could have been prevented if the proper precautions had been taken; but because of poor health care in Africa and also little knowledge at the time about Ebola, it was hard for a country with little to no health care to take action against the disease. Right now Doctors Without Borders volunteers are working in more than 70 countries. The organization has even received a Nobel peace prize, in

1999, in recognition of its members’ continued efforts to provide medical care in acute crisis as well as rising international awareness of potential humanitarian disasters. You can help in a few ways: by donation, volunteer (always welcome and may give you some life experiences) and spreading awareness. This article was provided by students in the Social Justice class at ADSS.
