Students in the Selkirk College hairdressing program are now taking customers at the salon at Nelson’s Silver King Campus.

Hairdressing students arrive with style at Silver King

Selkirk College Hairdressing Program students are inviting the community into their classroom where both student and client come away with a transformative experience. The Selkirk College Hairdressing Program Salon on the Silver King Campus is now taking clients and the 13 student hairdressers in this year’s class are keen to put their shears, rollers and foils to work and their developing skills to the test. “This is how they learn and gain important experience,” says Hairdressing Program Instructor Luree Gould. “They are building confidence with each client they see. The more experience they have, the better they get. I have al-

ready seen a huge improvement in the last month and all the pieces are coming together for them.” Hairdressing is one of the original programs at the Silver King Campus and has been creating wonderful stylists for the last 50 years. The first semester of the nine-month program was primarily classroom learning and now students are honing their skills by spending the second semester working on clients. “At first I felt pressure, but most people understand they are coming to a learning facility,” says 19-yearold student Robyn Lenardon. “Although we are just developing our skills, people are pleased to be looked after by talented stylists in the making.”

Lenardon grew up in Fruitvale and after graduating from Trail’s JL Crowe decided to come to Selkirk College to take the Esthetics Program. Graduating from the program last spring, Lenardon chose to continue her cosmetology training and enrolled in the Hairdressing Program in order to expand her employment options. Like her classmates, Lenardon is embracing the challenge of welcoming customers into her chair. “Every day is different because everyone wants something different, so it keeps you thinking,” says Lenardon. “You get to experiment with a whole bunch of different cuts, styles and colours… it’s really fun.” The salon offers services for

men and women including shampoos, perms, colours, cuts, styles, braids and more. Customers need to keep in mind that the salon is a classroom and there is a time commitment for those who visit. The reward for patience is the passion students have towards their newfound skills. “You need to do your absolute best,” says Lenardon. “Your name is what they leave here with and your customers are advertising for you.” To book an appointment and get a full list of prices please call 250.354.3243 or visit selkirk.ca/ services/campus-services/cosmetology-services/hairdressing . Selkirk College student Diane Dreger and Rob Frew from the Trail Wildlife Association are studying the Lower Columbia corridors that have historically been used by wildlife. A decrease in the local mule deer and other animal populations related to the impact of urban crawl, are two aspects of the Lower Columbia River Planning and Inventory project.

Trail native Rob Frew fondly recalls a childhood spent fishing the mighty Columbia River and hiking the area’s unbroken terrain with binoculars in hand, eager to spot deer and other noble creatures of the forest. But over the years, urban creep into the area’s natural surroundings has become such a black cloud that the retired Senior Environmental Coordinator is determined to stop, look around and conserve – beginning with Lower Columbia River corridor. “It’s never just one thing that affects wildlife, it’s a combination of factors,” says Frew. “I’ve seen such a huge change especially living in the Columbia Gardens area since 1997. This was like ‘Dogpatch’, a quiet little corner where the deer and elk could move about,” he explained. “But since the beginning of this century it’s become urban sprawl. I’m not against progress, but to me it isn’t always about covering

as much ground as you can. I’m ‘pro’ people having jobs and finding new businesses, but let’s try to do that with as small a footprint as we can.” That philosophy and passion for the West Kootenay natural environment is what Frew and Alphonse Mallette, members of the Trail Wildlife Association, recently brought before East End Services politicians in a bid for support to carry out the Lower Columbia River Planning and Inventory project. “Our motivation is the large decrease in the local mule deer population,” said Frew. “When I was younger there was a lot of mule deer, and less of the white tail,” he noted. “What’s probably happened is that valley has changed so much over the years, and mule deer have specific habitat requirements, that those changes impact wildlife that has (historically) passed through.” The study will focus on surveying lands adjacent to the Columbia River corridor, the surrounding benchlands, and

the drainage basins of the major tributary creeks. “Again, since the beginning of the century, recreational vehicles, which are like the plague to me, and logging roads cut into areas that no one had access to before, has so many people in places they’ve never been. “They don’t realize that all that activity alienates that land, and the wildlife doesn’t use it anymore.” The group’s first goal is to partner with high school and college students for help to conduct an inventory of wildlife habitat in the 80 kilometre stretch of the Columbia River corridor between Hugh Keenleyside Dam near Castlegar through Trail and south to the mouth of Onion Creek, near Northport, Wash. Selkirk College student Diane Dreger is on board, dedicating hours to help streamline both historical and recent data that has already been documented by other entities in the region.

Besides Dreger, Frew and Mallette will partner with J.L. Crowe Secondary School students for the actual wildlife count, in addition to future projects that could enhance natural habitat, such as planting, thinning or burning impacted lands. After the inventory count, comes the nitty gritty of identifying the most important corridors for wildlife to move freely between summer and winter range. Following the study, the plan includes more boots-to-theground action with restoration and conservation of the critical pathways. While the project is still in the infancy stage, Frew explained the ultimate goal is to work with Kootenay Conservation and other recognized conservancies to set aside areas for conservation and to identify and protect species-at-risk. The first step, he maintains, is elevating the project’s profile within Lower Columbia communities. “We are trying to get awareness from the politicians, and at the East End Services, they thought what we

Sheri Rignier photo.

are doing was really great,” he said. “People need to know that there is only room for so many things in this valley. Once we destroy a chunk of land, it’s gone for conservation.” The mule deer is indigenous to western North America, and are very distinctive with a large white rump patch, a black-tipped tail, and large ears that are about two-thirds the length of the head. In the interior, the mule deer’s traditional winter ranges consist of shrublands in the dry forest zone and on steep south and west-facing sites with broken terrain. They often remain at high elevations until December, then migrate to lower ranges with shallower snow. In summer, they usually leave the dry, valley-side ranges and move to higher, wetter elevations. The mule deer’s key winter foods include shrubs like big sagebrush, pasture sage, and bitterbrush, as well as the foliage of Douglas-fir trees and a variety of grasses and herbs. In spring and summer, mule deer prefer various grasses, along with herbs like balsamroot and clover, and leaves of shrub varietals.

While official fuel economy numbers were not available, Jeep is expecting a combined fuel rating of about 8.1 L/100km, which would be excellent. The 4x4 versions of Renegade also feature a unique disconnecting rear axle feature that should provide fuel economy numbers that are close to the 4x2 versions. ONCE A YEAR SALE!

YOU PAY WHAT WE PAY! Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

The Toyota RAV4 is ready to excite By Keith Morgan

The fourth generation Toyota RAV4 has a bold design that many people were happy to see when it was introduced in the 2013 model year. Looks Those changes were overdue. The Toyota RAV4 was fast becoming one of those vehicles that was starting to blend into the background. It had lost its design edge, which had

distinguished it from its rivals. It’s now keeping the competition at bay with a new and improved version. It features sleek bodylines, lower stance and is a little wider, making it more aerodynamic. Swept back headlights and a more aggressive front end are just some of the changes made a few years ago. The rear lift-gate features a onetouch operation that has selectable memory height

settings. That was perfect for my family: my wife had it set so low I could barely get my arm in. If she had been forced to deal with it at my height preference she would have needed a step ladder to close it! There are five models to choose from FWD LE, FWD XLE, AWD LE, and AWD Limited, giving a little something for everybody. In The Cab Ample use of soft touch materials used throughout

the interior. Comfortable front seats and rear seats that in to consideration the comfort of your passengers. 60/40 split fold down with reclining seat backs that are just as comfortable as the front seats and lots of legroom too. The driver’s seat on the LE models features a six-way manual adjustment while the Limited model receives an eightway power adjustable. The cargo area has a capacity

of 1.09m and 2.08m with the rear seats folded. Safety first Many safety items are standard in this RAV4: dual stage driver and passenger airbags, driver knee airbags, front seat mounted side airbags, roll sensing front and rear head/side curtain airbag. The star safety system includes vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distri-

bution, brake assist, and smart stop technology. Also available is lane departure alert, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert, which I think should be standard on all new models. Roadworthy I was impressed with how quiet and comfortable the interior was. You can hold a conversation with your children in the back without have to yell over the road noise. I found the 4-cylinder engine to be smooth and responsive. Verdict Improving upon a vehicle that has a proven track record, while keeping up with the latest technologies is a key reason that Toyota continues to be so popular today. Power A 2.5-litre, 4 cylinder engine powers this vehicle with 176 horsepower and 172 lb ft of torque mated to a 6-speed automatic electronically controlled transmission with sequential shift mode. Pump frequency 8.7/6.4 L/100 km (city/ highway) FWD LE, XLE 9.1/6.8 L/100 km (city/

Electric Bimmer is a race car in green clothing

By Keith Morgan

It is suggested that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery though it’s doubtful that belief is enthusiastically shared by folks in the fiercely competitive auto business. Nevertheless, to quote another common saying, all is fair in love and war. So, prepare to see clones or lookalikes of the allelectric, BMW i3 emerging from the production lines of major manufacturers in the next few years. In Detroit recently, my head spun when I clapped eyes on Chevy’s all-electric Bolt, even its rusty colour was similar to the i3 I drove at the launch in Amsterdam in 2013. As I remarked at that time, the compact ecoBimmer has a funky look and its one that’s gaining traction especially among the younger generation. My head spun again the other week when I picked up a production version to test in local conditions from Brian Jessel BMW in Vancouver. It was

identical to the Dutch example! Well, not quite. It did have an additional feature not present in the launch model. It had a range extender, which is marketing-speak for a two-cylinder, 647cc gas engine. It doesn’t drive the wheels but kicks in as an electricity generator designed to top up the battery when it runs low. It’s a must addition for Canada unless your daily trek clocks

up no more than the promised 130-160 kilometres range when setting out with a fullycharged battery. Based on my Dutch experience and a few days buzzing around the Fraser Valley, the top end is a shade optimistic, especially in poor weather when one tends to crank up the heat. Mind you, with a starting price just short of $45,000 the $4,000 generator pushes that already substantial cost up significantly. The ninelitre gas tank that feeds the tiny engine boosts the range to around 300 kilometres. What is indisputable is just how much fun this car is to drive. In town, the BMWi3 is the perfect shopping cart, extremely manoeuvrable and the fastest

parker in town! The lithium-ion battery, housed in an aluminum cage below the five-seater cabin, enables the electric motor to mimic a race car at the green and back into a tight spot equally quickly! You think I jest? – After seven seconds of acceleration, the display shows 100 km/h. The need to pass fast on the freeway is also easily achievable with a five-second count between 80 and 120 km/h. Drive like that all day and the gas engine will be firing up in no time but the power is there if you need it. Drive sensibly and to the prevailing weather conditions and you will get close to the advertised range. Sticking to the sluggish EcoPro and EcoPro+ modes will add 20 and

tions once you have parked up and plugged in the i3. Crowd sourced information also tells you which forms of transport are full and where there are delays. You can take advantage of this fabulous app without the need to shell out for an i3! keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Four vehicles you’d never guess are collectibles

By Rob Sass

It’s no secret that the Corvettes, Chevelles, Mustangs, ‘Cudas and Camaros that you see on televised auctions like Barrett-Jackson, Mecum and Auctions America, have a significant following. But there are cars that fly under the radar; you might never imagine that they have a rabid following among car collectors. Here are four of our favorite unlikely collectibles: Chevrolet C/10 pickups These may be among the

THE

hottest American collectibles right now, particularly the second-generation trucks built from 1967-72. Once as common as weeds, most were worked to death doing what they were designed to do. Upmarket trim packages like the Cheyenne (or Sierra on the GMC version) are particularly sought after. Great ones can easily sell for more than $20,000. Who’d have thunk it? Early Honda Civics The first three generations of Civics (spanning the years of 1973-87) were basic, honest cars that also happened to be relatively fun to drive.

The mechanicals would last forever, the bodies, not so much. Mostly, their owners saw them as disposable when they did finally need something major. That accounts for their rarity today. Recently on eBay, a clean 1978 Civic sold for $7,800 and an equally nice 1986 model brought a whopping $11,000. Toyota 4Runners The first generation of the Toyota 4Runner (1984-89) was simply a clever ploy to get around import duties for normal passenger cars. Pure trucks were taxed at a lower rate, so many first

Y A S R O Y R T

generation 4Runners arrived at the port with no rear seats, leaving it to the dealer to add them. Totally plausible since the original 4Runner was just a Toyota Hilux pickup (beloved of insurgents on every continent) with a fiberglass shell and the aforesaid rear seats and belts installed. By this point you know the pattern: Most were driven into the ground by surfers and rock climbers to the extent that clean examples are tough to find. When they do pop up with low miles, original paint and stripes, and no rust, they’ve brought high teens and low

20s. They may be the next FJ40 Land Cruiser. Chevrolet Corvairs The Chevrolet Corvair (196069) may well be the most unfairly maligned car ever. Ralph Nader was a young lawyer looking to make a name for himself in the consumer protection world, and the Corvair seemed an easy mark. In reality, a number of other manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Triumph, had successfully used the swing-axle rear suspension that was the target of most of his criticism. In combination with the car’s rear

weight bias, if driven carelessly, early examples of the Corvair could spin under hard cornering. Driven sensibly, Corvairs are attractive, fun to drive and unique. And as the memory of “Unsafe at Any Speed” fades nearly 50 years on, collectors are finally starting to take a shine to Corvairs with the very exciting turbocharged Corsa convertible often bringing substantially more than $20,000. Nevada is nice this time of year, especially when it includes thundering around Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in the all-new 650hp Corvette Z06. For those that are not aware, the Z06 factory order code was a secret code available, on a word of mouth basis, back in 1963 for pure driving enthusiasts to get a faster and more capable race-ready car. The Z06 factory spec was resurrected in 2001 and has evolved ever since to now represent a separate line in the Corvette Stingray family. In fact the Z06 has separate badging and an entirely different look. To confuse things, there is even a more aggressive model or sub-model called the Z07 but it is sold as a Z06. Confusing I know. Looks As great as it is getting to drive a potent, rear

wheel drive rocket on the track, the chance to rub shoulders with the people who make the car is just as exciting. Tadge Juechter is the Chief Engineer of the new Corvette Stingray and he told me that the already capable, 450hp base Stingray was intentionally designed to handle the more powerful Z06 package but the look of the Z06 is different and functional. As Juechter explains, “you get the wider body work, you get the custom quarter air inlet duck with fifty percent more air flow.” He went on to say “that’s the main secret with this car, you’ve got a lot of energy going in, how do you get that thermal energy out? So you’ve got bigger coolers everywhere, more flow, the aerodynamics are much more intense”. So all the parts that make the Z06 and Z07 more menacing, from the wider body to the additional spoilers and air intakes are functional. Inside Along with getting to drive as fast as my skills would allow, there were also a few hours on the

street getting to test the livability of the Z06. This was a big part of the design challenge. Juechter states “You can use them as daily drivers, you can use them as a long distance tourer, the seat comfort is good over long periods of time and you can also hammer it on the racetrack everyday.” The new Z06 really is a car without compromising comfort. The manual transmission is easy to shift, the clutch is light and the car is very easy to use, even in stop-and-go traffic. The secret is the magnetic ride control that makes adjustments to the shocks to smooth out larger bumps. The seats are supportive and the dash is futuristic. The previous buyers of the Z06 told Chevrolet that, yes they wanted a fast car but also the modern comforts, and this car has everything from navigation to a standard removable Targa top, even an available automatic transmission. continued on page A14

circular design, straightforward pricing

Designer Peter Schreyer took the circle as a starting point to completely transform the Kia Soul’s interior. The premium speakers, audio controls, instrument design and steering wheel controls all follow circular patterns. The result is a fresh and pleasing environment. While the Kia Soul was influenced by the circle, we are straightforward when it comes to great offers and pricing. So beeline down to Castlegar Kia to learn more about the Kia Soul.

Reminding you to Recycle!

Not your average Corvette Stingray uncanny and the cornering grip unshaken due to massive Michelin tires and race ready Michelin Cup tires on the Z07 trim. The brakes are very surefooted even lap after lap. What is fun is using the manual transmission with re-matching, letting the car automatically blip the throttle of downshifts. Verdict The top dog is the Z07 package that includes ceramic brakes, the competition tires, more aerodynamic effects and a forty percent stiffer ride. This is the car to get if you are a track rat or take part in weekend club events. But with roughly eighty five percent of Corvette buyers driving exclusively on the road, the Z06 offers the perfect balance of on-road livability with the extra punch for a little fun, the styling is also a major plus. The automatic is very quick on the track and opens up the Z06 to a new set of buyers but the 7-speed manual is so easy to live

continued from page B2

Drive It is understood that a Z06 Corvette should be fast but this new model is also very precise and rewards even the average driver with a level of confidence and ability to go fast, that defies belief. Juechter explains how this was achieved. “We use the technology, either in the tire construction, or the electronic differential, magnetic selective ride, it all comes together in the performance envelope but make it very accessible to normal driver’s, so people of average talent can go very fast”. And fast I went. Driving both the Z06 with a manual or the new 8-speed automatic is a jolt of adrenaline that should be bottled and sold. The howl from the 650hp 6.2L supercharged V8 is a sweet sound from inside the car and even more threatening outside the car. The traction is

Youth MENTAL HEALTH

Youth From normal blues to debilitating depression: The West Kootenay Advertiser begins a seven-part series on child and youth mental health issues.

PART THREE OF SEVEN

MENTAL HEALTH

recognizing the signs and symptoms to help your child or teen

BY DR. DAVID SMITH We all feel sad from time to time. It is a normal and appropriate response to disappointment and loss. But how do you tell whether your child or teen is experiencing normal sadness or suffering from clinical (or major) depression that may need expert help? Telling the difference can be difficult as the symptoms of depression can be different in children and teens from adults. In young children, it may express itself by being excessively clingy, frequently crying, expressing fear that they or others will die, losing interest in toys or friends, losing interest in school or refusing to go, frequent headaches, stomachaches or feeling sick. In older children and teens, along with many of those symptoms can come others like withdrawal and social isolation. Other symptoms can be a lack of energy, extreme boredom, inability to concentrate or communicate, loss of friends, or lack of desire to see friends. Changes in patterns of eating and sleeping (either too much or too little) are common signs, as is

being unable to get out of bed or off the couch. If your teen has previously been involved in sports and hobbies, depression may show up as an inability to enjoy or partake in activities that used to bring pleasure. Also common are feelings of excessive regret, guilt and remorse and increased irritability, aggression and hostility, as well as extreme sensitivity to rejection, criticism or failure. Sometimes untreated anxiety can turn into depression when the child or youth feels overwhelmed by their fears. One or two such symptoms usually aren’t enough to make a diagnosis, but a pattern of sadness or loss of interests or pleasure combined with three or four such symptoms extending over two weeks or longer is more suggestive of clinical depression. For parents, some of these symptoms can seem at times like normal teenage angst, lack of motivation or even misbehaviour. In fact, up until about two decades ago, it was thought that depression was primarily an adult disorder that rarely affected children or teens. Any symptoms displayed were put down to “a phase,” moodiness, over-dramatization, or self-indulgence. “Snap out of it!” many a parent would bark — thinking erroneously that cajoling or scolding might help. Now we know much better. Depression is a serious mental health issue that affects about two per cent of BC children and adolescents every year. It is more common in girls, but it may be that depressed boys and teenage males display other behaviours like aggression, substance use, and delinquency, which can mask the depression. The risk of experiencing an episode of depression rises with age and with family history. While sometimes depression comes seemingly out of the blue, it can also be triggered in susceptible youth (with a genetic pre-

disposition or with low self-esteem, perfectionist tendencies, for example) by trauma, anxiety, guilt or regret, or the death of a loved one or other significant loss. On its own, depression is bad enough, but its hopelessness and despair, with the inability to see a brighter future, can also lead to suicide, which is the second leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds. Fortunately, depression is highly treatable and youth are more likely to respond well to treatment if they receive it early. Treatment can consist of psychotherapy to teach youths how to address thoughts and behaviours that can lead to depression. Also, anti-depressant medication can be very effective at reversing depression and keeping relapses at bay. If your child seems to be showing symptoms of depression, talk to your family doctor, a mental health professional or the mental health clinicians through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).Call Service BC at 1 800 663-7867 to find the MCFD office nearest to you. Their experts will screen for depression and help your child access the most appropriate treatment if needed. We do know that healthy diets, regular exercise, good sleep, and the ability to talk about problems with people who care are all protective against depression or relapses. Information and support are available through a number of websites, such as: ok2bblue. com, dwdonline.ca, heretohelp.ca; mindyourmind.ca; keltyresources.ca, mindcheck.ca, openmind.ca. For youth with suicidal thoughts please call the BC youth crisis line 1-800-suicide, visit youthinbc.ca to chat with a counsellor in real time, or go to the Emergency Department of your nearest hospital.

Dr. David Smith is an adolescent and adult psychiatrist and the medical director of the Okanagan Psychiatric services for Interior Health. This series of columns on common child and youth mental health issues is a project of the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substances Use Collaborative. The Collaborative involves multiple indi-

viduals, organizations and ministries all working together to increase the number of children, youth, and their families receiving timely access to mental health services and support in the Interior Health and Vancouver Island regions. The Collaborative is jointly funded by Doctors of BC and the government of BC.

Tell somebody if you’re feeling that way WILL JOHNSON West Kootenay Advertiser

Depression is full of contradictions. For some who are struggling with depression, they can’t eat. For others, they eat too much. While many complain of insomnia and long, sleepless nights, others have a tendency to sleep all the time, disappearing into a semi-conscious fog. Any and all of these symptoms may be manifestations of depression, or they may not be. It all depends on the individual. “It’s very individual-specific, but we usually want to check in about thoughts of wanting to die. If there’s a risk of self-harm or thoughts of suicide. Not all people experience these symptoms or thoughts, but they’re linked to depression,” said Nelson child and mental health clinician Tobi Ridge. Ridge said depression is the second most common mental health issue in the West Kootenay, following

anxiety, but there are plentiful resources available for those struggling to cope. “Some people experience depression after a major loss. Some people experience depression due to years of neglect. Some people have a family history of depression, which can increase the likelihood they can experience it,” she said. Because the experiences are so specific to each individual case, treatments can vary drastically. Ridge said the most important thing is ensuring that supports are in place for depressed people, as they have a tendency to withdraw from family, social and work life. “Depending on the level of concern when meeting with a person, I would enquire about what supports need to be in place. Something else that’s very important is physical exercise and nutrition and proper sleep hygiene,” she said. “Motivation is tough for people who are depressed, so encouraging support is always welcome,” she said. And though some residents may be concerned

about the potential cost of seeking treatment, Ridge said they need not be worried. “Tell somebody you’re feeling that way. Tell somebody you trust. You don’t always have to feel that way, and things can change if you get the right help,” she said. The best way to seek help is from a professional mental health worker, but there are also resources online. Ridge personally recommended mindcheck.ca, helptohelp.bc.ca, Kelty Mental Health and dwdonline.ca. (“DWD” stands for “Dealing with Depression.) Once someone recognizes they have been struggling with depression and realizes they want to seek help, Ridge said they should seek out some form of talk therapy. “What we know is cognitive behavioural therapy is an evidence-based treatment for depression,” she said. And quite often, it’s more effective than simply

prescribing someone with medications, she said. “In some situations cognitive behavioural therapy can be paired with medication, but that’s not for everybody.” Before resorting to medication, Ridge recommends pursuing other life changes and seeking treatment with a counselor. Ridge said she’s encouraged by the recent trent towards society addressing mental health difficulties head-on. “Something unique right now is the move towards reducing stigma around mental illness and having conversations about mental health,” said Ridge, who noted that Clara Hughes’ recent Let’s Talk campaign was triggered by her personal experiences with depression. If you’re struggling with depression, you can call Kid’s Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868. They also have an interactive website. In case of emergencies, you can reach the crisis hotline at 1-800-SUICIDE.
