Winter Mayhem in Kimberley C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

It’s Winter Mayhem week in Kimberley, beginning Saturday, February 7. Winter Mayhem has grown out of the hugely successful Mayhem in the Platzl rail jam last year. Rather than just limit it to one night, says organizer Cora Miller, why not celebrate winter in Kimberley with a week long series of events. It will all culminate with the rail jam on February 14. The rail jam has been moved up to the base of the ski hill as there simply isn’t enough snow downtown this year to construct the course. But it will still feature all the excitement and energy of last year’s event. There is lots to get excited about, Miller says, beginning with a snowshoe adventure on Saturday morning, February 7, at 10 a.m. The tour, hosted by the Kimberley Nature Park Society, departs from the Swan Avenue entrance at 10 a.m. and will take about two hours. This is a moderate hike. Participants should be comfortable walking some distance in snowshoes.

According to court records, Waylon Jesse Edey was due in court in Cranbrook on February 15 facing charges of operating a motor vehicle while disqualified, driving while prohibited, and fleeing from police, following an incident on March 11 last year at Moyie. In March 2011, he was sen-

tenced to 14 days in jail and received a two-year driving ban after admitting to impaired driving in an August 2009 incident at Creston. Michael Phillipps and the Opening of the West “Those who dwell in cities know nothing of such a life.” Michael Phillipps

M

ichael Phillipps was typical of many young men who made the long journey to Canada in the 1800s. He was of a respected family — his father was an Anglican vicar in the parish of Dewsall, Herefordshire, England — he was intelligent, well-educated, capable and, above all, adventurous. Born in 1840, according to most sources, he took the long sea journey to Victoria, B.C., in 1864, the year that gold was discovered on Wild Horse Creek. He did not jump on the gold wagon but instead took a job as clerk with the Hudson’s Bay Co. at Fort Sheppard, south of present day Trail, B.C., spending nearly a year there before moving to another outpost on Tobacco Plains, near what is now Roosville (referred to at the time as Fort Kootenay, although it was an unfortified compound). He had an Iroquois guide in his company who proved useless when faced with the

Jim Cameron Ktunaxa dialect, so Michael took it upon himself to thoroughly learn the language. Fur-trading was the business of the day, with the outpost also supplying many of the necessities required by trappers and prospectors which meant regular dealings in both currency and gold — during one trip to Fort Hope (Hope, B.C.) Michael and his partner carried nearly 150 pounds of gold dust and nuggets. At a value at the time of over $28 per ounce, it was a great deal of money to be packing through the wilds. The Tobacco

Plains outpost closed soon thereafter, not least in fear of Blackfoot and Blood Indian uprisings, at which point Michael found himself at a posting near the conjunction of the Wild Horse and Kootenay Rivers. As the gold panned out Michael took work constructing the first building on what is now the site of present day Cranbrook, a log customs house that stood in what now what remains of Baker Park. The Hudson Bay Company gradually pulled out of the area but Michael stayed on, taking up a considerable amount of good land on the Canadian side of Tobacco Plains. He married Rowena (also spelled Roweena) David, daughter of Tobacco Plains chief Paul David and together he and Roweena had twelve children. In 1872, he and Jack Collins headed up the Elk River, fur-trapping and prospecting for gold. Travelling along

Michael stated: “We found no gold but plenty of coal. A little west of Crow’s Nest Lake we struck buffalo signs and knew we had passed through the range without going over a mountain. From thereon I worked hard to open up the perfect pass through the Rocky range.” They had inadvertently discovered the Crowsnest Pass; the problem was that no one at the time was interested in either the pass or the coal. Local Member of Parliament R.L.T. Galbraith, of Galbraith’s Ferry (Fort Steele), made an effort to secure funds to further exploit the trail but was firmly rebuffed by William Fernie, local gold commissioner who declared, “The Indians say there is no pass, and

trail through the pass was finally approved, it was Michael Phillipps and William Ridgeway who laid out the route that would become the present day Crowsnest Pass, connecting the East Kootenay to the bustling town of Fort McLeod, Alberta. It was to become a main thoroughfare until the CPR ran their line through the Rockies at Kicking Horse Pass, preferring to stay well clear of the Canadian/U.S. border. Michael recalled in 1904, that during the time the trail was being made, “I showed a seam of coal to Peter Fernie [William’s brother] and well do I remember his reply. ‘If that’s your coal I don’t think much of it.’” In 1886, local Member of Parliament James Baker and William Fernie undertook a serious study of coal outcroppings in the pass and promptly formed a syndicate with included Peter Fernie, James Baker’s son V. Hyde Baker, and the Hon. F. W. Aylmer. The following year William Fernie took a prospecting party into the pass and staked 10,000 acres of land in the area of Michel, Coal and Morrissey creeks. 1888 saw the application for a railway charter

through the pass which was duly granted and would become the Crow’s Nest Railway, rolling into the town of Cranbrook in 1898. Michael Phillipps eventually settled down on his Tobacco Plains ranch with his wife and family. The area was, for a time, referred to as Phillips, until Fred Roo built a hotel and successfully undertook to change the name to Roosville. Michael acted as Indian Agent, Justice of the Peace and member of the School Board for many years. He was often seen in Cranbrook and occasionally enticed to recall the stories of his earlier days in the area. Surprisingly little has been done to ensure the legacy of one of the true pioneers of the East Kootenay. He died at his ranch on June 22, 1919, and is buried near his wife in the small Roosville cemetery. His many descendants are legion throughout the area. In speaking of Michael Phillipps a local newspaper once said, “The subtle spirit of the wilderness had slipped into his blood, called him into lonely places, to remote headwaters of many an unnamed stream where no man had come since the making of the world.”

BC’s Independent Investigations Office is investigating the shooting. Five investigators travelled to Castlegar last Friday, including a forensic specialist. According to an information bulletin issued by the IIO, over the weekend the team reviewed the evidence that had been obtained from the scene and interviewed witnesses to the incident. One officer has been designated as a subject officer; one has been designated as a witness officer. The IIO said these investigative tasks are “standard in this type of

a critical incident.” On February 4, Ralph Krenz of the IIO said the team is continuing with their forensic analysis. Krenz said there will be one of two outcomes. If there is no criminal wrong-doing found or determined, a public report with a summary of what happened will be posted on the IIO website. The other outcome would be a report forwarded to the Crown. “It’s important to remember that the IIO have a lower referral threshold to Crown compared to police,” said Krenz. “If it goes to Crown, they can issue a clear statement if they believe that there is no wrong-doing or it could proceed to court with charges being laid.” — With files from Greg Nesteroff

The Kingdom of Cardboard and Spoils

I

read and watched an inspiring blog that I the title of the small book he co–wrote with wanted to share with you. It’s the story of long–time friend and San Francisco poet Dieter Zander. I hadn’t heard of him be- LaDonna Witmer. In a short video they produced, Witmer fore, but he used to be one of the rising stars at the Willow Creek Community Church. reads some of Zander’s words. “If I am the king of all I survey, then I am Formed in 1981 under the direction of founding pastor Bill Hybels just outside of king of cardboard and spoils. My kingdom Chicago, WCCC is the granddaddy of the is a small windowless room in the back of the Trader Joe’s grocery “seeker–sensitive” megastore.” church movement. The video goes on to show WCCC hired Dieter ZanZander baling cardboard der in 1995 to direct the boxes for recycling, and boxmusic ministry. He was a Rev. Yme ing up the food which is brilliant pianist and an inspirational preacher who Woensdregt called “spoiled” because it isn’t perfect — apples that drew hundreds with his preaching and music. Zander says now that aren’t perfectly round, food which is still he thrived on the adoration, the applause, perfectly fine but which has reached its the undivided attention he got wherever he “best by” date. He uses Dallas Willard’s went. People treated him like he was a rock definition of kingdom as “a realm that is uniquely our own, where our choice deterstar — and he bought into the myth. Suddenly, it all changed. He writes, “I mines what happens.” “My kingdom used to be a stage, a slept right through the moment that changed my life. In the small hours of the piano, a microphone. My kingdom used to morning on February 4, 2008, I suffered a be a performance. King Dieter! Then came massive stroke in the left hemisphere of my the stroke … and now my kingdom is found brain. When I woke from my coma in the here at the back of Trader Joe’s. There is no hospital six days later, my right hand was audience in this kingdom — but that’s okay because I’m not performing. There is no crippled and I could barely speak.” It was a humbling experience for some- ‘stage Dieter’ here, no superman seeking to one. In a moment, he lost his talent and his wow the masses with feats of spiritual ability to speak. His whole life came crash- strength. It’s just me. Just Dieter — the guy who mops the floors, who bales the empty ing down. Now, however, Zander says he wouldn’t boxes for recycling, who prepares the spoils change much. He calls it “A Stroke of Grace”, for the Marin Food Bank.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

“There’s something beautiful about this simple, menial work though. Take the food marked as spoils for example. It’s all still good. The fruit is good. The meat is good. The flowers are good. But they’re not ‘perfect’ … so the other employees wheel this perfectly good but not perfect food back to my kingdom. From here it goes to feed the hungry who don’t care at all that the apple they’re about to eat is lopsided … they don’t care how it looks — they just want to eat. “To me, this is what’s real. I understand the spoils. I can relate. Because I too am spoils. I used to be packaged as perfect. Back in the heyday of my church career, I was a shiny, unblemished apple. At least that was the image I polished up and displayed. But now, stripped of my talent, my stage and my six–figure salary, I relish imperfection. I revel in the spoils.” “I come home after work, and I think, ‘It’s good today.” It’s not a sermon; it’s not a performance; it’s not perfection. But the cardboard is recycled, the spoils are feeding the hungry, and today I’m thinking ‘Life is good. It’s very good.” You can watch the video for yourself on youtube. It’s only 4½ minutes long, and is one of the most spiritual things I have ever seen. Zander’s story is a gift for us all. Tme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

We need your help to change the school calendar. We want our schools to provide five full days of education every week like the majority of public and private schools in B.C. There is no valid educational reason for adding minutes to each day so one full day can be eliminated every second week. The BC Ministry of Education refers to these extra days as Vacation Days. We requested an opportunity to provide input for next year’s school calendar to the board at the February 10th School Board’s Meeting. The Secretary Treasurer refused stating ‘At the time the Board sends the proposed calendar to the public an opportunity will be provided to the public to provide written input to Board.’ We had hoped to provide input before the calendar was put together, but we will wait and hope that parents will support our efforts to request the elimination of the extra nine NIS (Not in Service - Vacation Days). The calendar needs to change. The needs of families have changed. The extra nine days should to be eliminated to better meet the needs of today’s parents, and students. There is no drop-in Day Care, as there was in the past, and there are fewer extended families living close by who might be able to help. Others have challenged the NIS days before. When they asked for evidence to support the nine NIS Vacation Days, they were told teachers, and students were polled, and they had all approved. Wouldn’t you approve if you could get an extra nine vacation days without any loss of pay? Asking students if they want to keep the extra days off from school is like asking a child if they want to keep Christmas. While these nine days do not affect a teacher’s salary, they cost many parents a day of lost wages or, if it can be found, the price for costly Day Care. This is the beginning of a new term for the newly elected School Board Trustees. We hope they will demonstrate a willingness to listen to the needs of parents, and

families in an open consultative manner. Help change next year’s calendar. Sign a petition to remove the nine NIS - Vacation Days. Petitions for change are available from erpalmer505@gmail.com Leena Wright and Erika Rieve Palmer Cranbrook

Canadian icon at risk

In the 2012 federal budget the Conservative government announced their plan to cut $115 million from the CBC’s annual budget between 2012 and 2015. An additional cut of $130 million by 2016 was announced in April of 2014. Total job loss – 1,307 jobs. Impact on those who care about what it means to be Canadian – significant! Why should we care? It is the CBC, our public broadcaster, that keeps us informed on what the issues are across our country (e.g. Cross Country Check Up), keeps us entertained (e.g. The Debaters) and gives us the opportunity to laugh while we learn (e.g. The Rick Mercer Report) to name just a few program highlights. When you live in a largely rural region like the Kootenays, CBC radio becomes the friend that travels with you along our highways. Simply stated, we need expanded CBC coverage, not less. Cutting millions of dollars will take us in the wrong direction both nationally and internationally. We need the CBC when we travel on business or vacation, or as part of the Armed Forces, to keep us in touch with home. In the early 1980s I coordinated a series featuring BC’s Provincial Parks with CBC television called Adventure BC. I traveled the province with a producer, a cameraman and program host Bob Switzer, provided by CBC television. Using local experts, we featured what makes parks and heritage places like Cody Caves, Ft. Steele, and St Mary’s Alpine such important assets. More Conservative government means not only will regional programming be a thing of the past, meaningful national cov-

erage will also be seriously at risk. If we care about Canada and the things that define us as Canadians, we can’t let that happen. Wayne Stetski Cranbrook

Teachers lead the way

Contrary to Tom Fletcher’s assertion that BC teachers and the BCTF are not “adapting,” we are actually leading the way in protecting and enhancing education in our province. The BC Teachers’ Federation is actively involved in BC’s task force on assessment, the graduation requirements review, and the curriculum redesign teams. Our two Vice-Presidents and I have been meeting with senior Ministry of Education staff on these initiatives as well. As a union of professionals, we work hard to enhance our practice in support of teaching and learning. The BCTF has 32 provincial specialist associations—ranging from science, social studies, and art to technology and trades education—that put on exceptional professional development conferences, write reports, and lead important teacher inquiry projects. Recently, the BCTF has partnered with UBC and the BC Superintendents Association to create a province-wide mentoring program that will formalize an integrated system of support for developing and retaining teachers in BC. We also funded, created, and launched a new online platform called TeachBC that enables teachers from across BC to share their research and teaching resources. There are a lot of excellent things happening in BC schools and teachers are front and centre making it all happen. However, we cannot forget that any government strategy, initiative, direction, plan, etc., needs funding. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting for this government to fund the basics like improving class size and composition. A change in government attitude towards funding is the first adaptation BC students need. Jim Iker BCTF President

Watoto Children’s Choir perform next week. Arne Petryshen

The Watoto Children’s Choir will be bringing its signature sound to Cranbrook next week. The children of the choir were once orphans and through the performance share their journeys. The choir will be presenting a brand new production entitled Oh What Love at the Abundant Life Pentacostal Assembly at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13. The performance is part of the Watoto Children’s Choir tour all across Canada from January to July 2015. James Skinner, Creative Director: Watoto Children’s Choir said the production is indicative of modern Africa — a continent coming out of ruin and exploring its true identity. Africa is coming of age and the children and its young adults are the key to the future.

The Watoto Children’s Choir will perform at the Abundant Life Pentacostal Assembly at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13. “Through their unique personalities, the children now communicate and share the sense of belonging they found in God their father,” said Skinner. He added that like Africa, the children are representative of many others who are beginning to understand their identi-

ty in religion. He said they know they belong to a family of believers. Six year old Jackie Nakku is one of those orphaned children, adopted by the choir. “After losing my parents I felt alone, with no one to love me,” Nakku said. “Now I know that

God is my father. He loves and cares for me. As I travel on the choir, I am going to show people that God loves them too.” Since 1994, Watoto Children’s Choirs have travelled all over the world sharing the plight of Africa’s orphaned and vulnerable. Each of the children in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both of their parents but they have been rescued and now live in a Watoto village. Gary Skinner, Watoto Founder, calls the performance a unique worship experience that celebrates the urban African landscape and brings out the unique personalities of the children. Oh What Love will be presented in Cranbrook on Friday, Feb. 13 , at Abundant Life Pentecostal Assembly (501 11 Ave S) at 7 p.m.

Giving back to Cranbrook a priority for Kootenay Ice Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

Kootenay Ice forwards Levi Cable, Jaedon Descheneau and Luke Philp strolled casually into the BCSPCA East Kootenay Branch Thursday afternoon, big grins plastered across their faces. Sure, the Brandon Wheat Kings are in town for a pair of colossal Eastern Conference games this weekend, but the veteran forwards appreciate and enjoy the opportunity to give back to the community in which they play. And they certainly weren’t about to turn down a chance to play with furry friends at Cranbrook’s local SPCA branch. “A lot of the events, I like to do them. They’re actually really fun,” Cable said. “I try to sign up for as many as I can just to get out and about. Other than hockey, I don’t do much around here, so it’s pretty fun.” Cable, a 20-year-old native of Hudson Bay, Sask., is in his fourth and final season with the Kootenay Ice. Whether he’s holding puppies at the SPCA on a sunny Thursday afternoon or handing out teddy bears to patients at East Kootenay Regional Hospital in December, the smalltown Saskatchewan speedster is one of the first Kootenay Ice players to volunteer his time around Cranbrook. “It’s huge. It’s always nice to get away from the rink and get your mind on something else,” Cable said. “Something like this really helps to get you away from the hockey scene for a little bit.” After learning a tough lesson against the Kelowna Rockets last weekend, Cable, Descheneau, Philp and the rest of the Ice certainly stood to benefit from some refreshing hours away from hockey. For Philp, visiting a place like the SPCA provides an opportunity to show that, despite not having grown up in Cranbrook, he appreciates what the people in this community have done for him during his time here.

“It takes you away from the rink, takes you away from the game and you get to meet nice people, nice animals and stuff like that,” Philp said. “Everywhere you go, everyone is friendly, so it’s fun.” Philp, a 19-year-old native of Canmore, Alta., has been seen reading to children in local schools and serving up pasta at

out to be. For Descheneau, the chance to get away from it all is welcomed. “It’s big. You’re at the rink so much and you play so many games. In this league, it’s pretty much an NHL schedule with all the travel,” Descheneau said. “When you get away and you get to come hang out with cute dogs and cats,

“It’s important for us to show that we appreciate all their support and the support we get around the community from everyone.” Kootenay Ice forward Luke Philp East Side Mario’s amongst other outings over his three full seasons in Cranbrook. “It’s very important with stuff like this,” Philp said with a smile. “Especially with schools, the little kids look up to us a lot. It’s important for us to show that we appreciate all their support and the support we get around the community from everyone. “The schools are always fun. The kids are always pretty energetic and pretty excited. This is the first time I’ve been here [at the SPCA] and you can’t really beat cute puppies.” Descheneau, a 19-year-old Edmonton native, volunteered his time with the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual November wreath campaign earlier this season. While leading a junior-hockey lifestyle might seem glamorous and glorious to those on the outside, the grind of a 72-game schedule and long, exhausting hours on a bus isn’t exactly the rockstar life it’s made

nothing’s better. I’m a huge dog guy. This is my second year doing this and I really enjoy it every time.” While the three veteran goal-scorers are looked to for their leadership off the ice and in the community, they still have responsibilities on the ice. After Thursday’s excursion to the East Kootenay SPCA, Cable, Descheneau and Philp were headed back to Western Financial Place to continue preparing for back-to-back tilts with the Wheat Kings. “They’ve got a lot of depth, they’ve got a lot of scoring and they’ve proven to be a really good team in this league this year,” Philp said. “We’ll be ready to play. We almost kind of sat back and some of us were a little intimidated when we played Kelowna last week. We can’t be intimated just because we know they’re a good team and they have lots of fire power. We can’t sit back and let them dictate the play because

Ice forwards (left to right) Levi Cable, Jaedon Descheneau and Luke Philp stopped in at the BCSPCA East Kootenay Branch Thursday afternoon to help out with the Million Acts of Kindness campaign. we’ll be playing catch-up the rest of the game. We’ve got to go out there and dictate the play.” The Rockets took full control last Saturday, building a 4-0 lead in a game in which the Ice were hoping to measure up as one of the league’s top teams. This time around, the Ice aim to prove last weekend was the outlier and they truly do belong in the conversation with the likes of the Kelowna Rockets and Brandon Wheat Kings. “It’s a little bit easier to prepare for both [nights]. You’re not looking at two different teams over the weekend, so you can just focus on the one team and what they do and their tendencies,” Cable said. “In that way, it’s a little easier. But I like the games -- they get a little more intense because they’re two backto-back [against the

same opponent]. “We’re going to have to come out and play our game, see their tendencies and focus on them. But the main part is to focus on us, bring what we’ve got and compete hard for 120 minutes this weekend.” The Wheat Kings are in the midst of a fivegame road trip, having already knocked off the Moose Jaw Warriors and Medicine Hat Tigers. Outside of a 3-2 overtime loss to the Swift Current Broncos (Jan. 27), the Wheat Kings have won nine of their previous 10 outings. “[Kelowna] was probably the best junior team I’ve played against in my WHL career,” Descheneau said. “It just tells us how good you have to be to win in this league. “Brandon’s right up there with them. We know what we have to expect against Brandon

NHL experimenting with player, puck tracking technology Associated Press

Imagine tracking Sidney Crosby’s every move on the ice in real time. The NHL is experimenting with player tracking technology that could be available as early as next season for broadcasters and fans. During last month’s All-Star game in Columbus, Ohio, chips were put in jerseys and pucks to track everything from speed and movement to shift length and ice time. The success of this first experiment could make it more widespread. “We’re not exactly sure where this will all take us,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said from Vancouver, B.C. “Ultimately, we are hoping to deliver the kind of data that will create insights and tell stories that avid and casual hockey fans will enjoy. “We are attempting to embark upon a journey that hopefully will enable us to create and then maintain a digital record of everything in our game and compile a complete digital history.” Sportvision, the company responsible for first-and-10 lines in football and “K zone” strikezone mapping in baseball, has worked with the NHL for six years. In co-operation with the NHL Players Association, each player had a chip in the collar of his jersey during All-Star weekend. Chips were in each puck so infrared cameras in the ceiling of Nationwide Arena could track every movement. With this technology, teams, players and fans can see how fast a player is skating, his top speed and average. The league and NHLPA must come to an agreement before there’s even a consideration about having player tracking in place for real games. It’s much more available data, and with that comes some hesitancy on behalf of some players. “We haven’t finished discussing all that with the players,” NHLPA executive director Don Fehr said. “Are there issues some players are concerned about? Sure. But it falls into the generalized category of creating meaningless statistics.” Sportvision CEO Hank Adams thinks there’s a use for the stats. TV networks cans determine speed and move-

ment in real-time. Stumbling blocks exist, but the expectation is the technology will be ready for games by next season or after. Things like hits, giveaways and takeaways will remain subjective,

and video review will still be necessary to determine goals. The aim is to make everything more precise: What’s a shot on goal? How much time was spent in the offensive zone? How long was that

shift? In theory, this would replace hand scoring and subjectivity would be taken out of the equation. Mathieu Schneider, a former defenceman now working as special assistant to Fehr, voiced ex-

citement but some trepidation. “This is the first step, but these are the discussions we’re having with the players right now,” Schneider said. “Will coaches coach by statistics sitting on the bench

with an iPad? There still needs to be that sense from the guys that it’s not going to get overused or used improperly.” Bettman thinks it’s too early to tell. “We’re still testing,” Bettman said. “I think

we’re in the embryonic stage of what is at best a work in progress. But I do believe we will get to a place where we’ll have better access to what’s going on in the game for media, broadcasters and our fans.”

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Watch what happens when you let go of your need to control. You could be surprised by several offers that come forward as a result. If a friend or acquaintance goes on the warpath, do whatever you can to avoid him or her. Tonight: Squeeze in some kind of exercise. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You have unusual creativity. What makes your ideas unique is how grounded and practical you are when implementing them. Others often seek you out for advice because of this quality. You might need to set boundaries with someone. Tonight: Start the weekend in style. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Many of your friends could be taken aback by your decision to play it low-key. You might not be in the mood for TGIF celebrations. Focus on what you must, but opt for a quiet evening at your place. Address your concerns a different day. Tonight: Make a favorite dinner.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Speak your mind early in the day. A partner is likely to become controlling, regardless of whether you choose to stay mum. A financial matter could be more costly than you originally had thought. Decide how important this venture is. Tonight: Hang out with a pal. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Take a hard look at your budget before you make any plans. Your feelings about the costs of adventure could be different from those of a friend or partner. Know when to say “enough is enough.” Sometimes, taking off is the solution. Tonight: All smiles. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’ll feel empowered, though you inadvertently could trigger quite an argument. Be aware of your limits when dealing with a friend who constantly distorts reality. Find a unique way to open the door for this person to see this distortion. Tonight: Do your own thing. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You could feel as if something

Tundra

is off. Whether you aren’t seeing a situation clearly or someone else keeps changing his or her opinion, it would be in your best interests to say little and observe more. You might want the feedback of a trusted friend. Tonight: Make it OK to vanish. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You know what you want. You will be upfront about your desires, but others still might not follow through. If you want something to unfold a certain way, you’d better plan do it yourself. Otherwise, you could be disappointed. Tonight: A new friend intrigues you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might feel as if someone is pushing you into a money matter or some other kind of agreement that could affect you financially. Extremes mark your spending habits. Take an overview and detach before making any major decisions. Tonight: Out late. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You might want to put terms on a situation, because you are more comfortable when you feel

totally in control. Try not to give in to this impulse. If you step back, you will open up new possibilities, some of which might really please you. Tonight: Go to a hip spot for music. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You like your freedom, but sometimes you must bend in order to make a relationship work. A little discomfort won’t hurt you, and ultimately, it will allow you to relax more. Curb spending today, as you could unwittingly go overboard. Tonight: Get to know someone better. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Friends and loved ones will be full of suggestions, all of which seem to appeal to you. You might not be as sure of yourself as you would like to be. Take note of the confidence others have in you. You make good choices; count on that ability. Tonight: Dance away frustration. BORN TODAY Singer/songwriter Bob Marley (1945), former U.S. President Ronald Reagan (1911), baseball player Babe Ruth (1895) ***

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: A few months ago, we hired a lovely young woman to work in our office. “Jen” soon moved into a duplex in the neighborhood and says she loves the area. She has a boyfriend, works full time and goes to school online. She is busy and rarely gets enough sleep. Jen lives close to the office, so she often goes home to nap at lunchtime. The problem is her neighbor in the adjoining duplex, an older single woman who has become a huge pest. She will knock on Jen’s door as soon as she walks in, no matter what time it is. Jen has tried to be nice to her, but is getting fed up with having to “come over and sit” with this woman. This woman knocks on Jen’s door at least five times a day, more on weekends. She asks Jen or her boyfriend to change light bulbs and batteries, fold tablecloths and sheets, you name it. She is not frail or incapable of doing these things on her own. She drives and goes out for dinner a lot. If Jen doesn’t answer the door, the woman just keeps knocking, no matter how long it takes. Jen is chronically tired and at her wits’ end. I know she doesn’t want to hurt the woman’s feelings, but the fact that they live in adjoining duplexes doesn’t turn them into best friends. Jen has no interest in hanging out with her. What can she do? -- Frustrated Co-Worker Dear Frustrated: We understand that you feel sorry for Jen’s situation, but you seem overly involved in her dilemma. If Jen wants this woman to leave her alone, she simply needs to tell her in plain English that she needs her rest and does not want to be disturbed. It would be a kindness for Jen to set aside a time when she is willing to entertain this woman, but otherwise, she should make herself unavailable, no matter how much knocking goes on, and say “sorry, no” when asked to visit or be of assistance. No one can take advantage of you without your permission. Dear Annie: I was wondering whether you knew of any guidelines regarding how to address mail to unmarried couples, families with multiple last names, and same-sex couples. This has been a problem for me when mailing Christmas greetings, and I will soon be sending out bridal shower and wedding invitations. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I like to do things properly. -- Still Buying Stamps Dear Still Buying: Unmarried couples are addressed as “Ms. Jane Doe” on one line and “Mr. John Smith” on the next. (Adults who live in the same household, but are not couples, receive individual invitations. Teenagers, too.) Married couples with different last names would be “Ms. Jane Doe and Mr. John Smith” on the same line. Same-sex couples are done the same way, with the names listed alphabetically. If the same-sex couple is using the same last name, it is “Mmes. Jane and Mary Smith” or “Messrs. John and Richard Doe.” For informal invitations, it’s OK to use first names and “and Family” where applicable. Thank you for reminding us that some folks still care enough to do it right. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Sisterin-Law,” who complained that her sister-inlaw makes comments about her food. The last straw was when she said, “If they put that in front of me, I would get sick to my stomach immediately.” When I am faced with large servings of food, I feel not just overwhelmed but actually nauseated. It’s a genuine physical feeling. So maybe the sister-in-law was not making a negative remark about her companion’s food, but rather about her own sensitivities. Hopefully, they will mend fences and stay on good terms. A good relationship with a sister-in-law is to be treasured. I know because I have a great sister-in-law. -- Feeling Better Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Scientists surprised by East Kootenay tectonics Dan Walton Invermere Valley Echo

Geoscientists from the University of Calgary were in for a surprise when they took a closer look at plate tectonics beneath the East Kootenay. What seemed to be a routine measurement ended up confuting prior geological assumptions. “We’re proposing that there was a mantle delamination event that took place about 50 million years ago, which had profound consequences for how the mountains developed afterwards,” said Dr. David Eaton, professor of geophysics at the University of Calgary. As part of a team with two other researchers from the university’s Department of Geoscience, Dr. Eaton had collaborative access to a network of seismograph stations throughout the region of the Rocky Mountain Trench. “In addition to our own instruments in Canada, we took advantage of data from a giant project in the US called Earthscope,” he said. The seismograph stations were built mainly for other purposes such as monitoring local earthquake activity. Using seismogram recordings of earthquakes from around the world, Dr.

Eaton and his team combined data from hundreds of stations to paint a picture of what’s underground. “The technique we used to image the Earth’s mantle is similar to medical CAT scan technology,” he said. The team was expecting to find that below the crust, the mantle beneath the older part of the North American continent extended continuously below the Rocky Mountain Trench, to gradually merge into younger mantle rocks to the west. “We were quite surprised with the results we found,” he said. “Our images revealed a remarkably sharp edge in the lower part of the North American plate, located right underneath Invermere and following the Rocky Mountain Trench.” That sharp edge in the North American plate may have formed by a tectonic event about 50 million years ago. “We are proposing that what we’re seeing today as the edge of the lower part of the plate underneath the Rocky Mountain Trench represents a location where the ancient mantle rocks broke off and foundered into the deep Earth. In effect, there
