n her first birthday, Kaiya Westlind McEwen was so sick she couldn’t eat her birthday cake. Upon turning four earlier this month, the vigorous Campbell River preschooler was able to have her cake and eat it, too. Kaiya, diagnosed as an infant with a genetic condition that threatened to destroy her liver before age 2, was put on the road to recovery by the living donation of liver tissue from her great-aunt, and by donations from a multitude of charities and fundraisers, including the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon The telethon returns this weekend for its 49th year on Global BC. “One of the first was Variety, because they’re connected to B.C. Children’s Hospital,” said Rita McEwen, Kaiya’s mother. “I was so concerned with being Kaiya’s primary caregiver that a social worker was set up to handle filling out all the forms. I was really bad about it, but (Variety) was really wonderful. They never made it a problem.” The family — including Kaiya’s father, Josh Westlind, and older brother, Evan — had enough problems on their hands when the baby girl began exhibiting health issues at just two months of age. Traveling from their home on Salt Spring Island in 2011 to visit a variety of specialists, they finally

As a former student at St. Michael’s Indian Residential School in Alert Bay, George Quocksister did everything in his power to make sure none of his 10 children were forced to go. But three of his daughters will gladly make that trip next week. Carol Bear, Maria White and Louella Serhan of Campbell River will join other residential school survivors from across coastal B.C. for a healing/cleansing ceremony that will mark the decommissioning of the former school building, which looms over Alert Bay as a stark reminder of a dark period in Canada’s colonial history. Over the course of the next six weeks, the monolithic, four-storey brick structure built in 1928-29 will be demolished and wiped from the Cormorant Island landscape. “To me, it will mean a closure to my own childhood,” said Bear. “I’ve heard so many bad things from there, it’s got my head full.” White and Serhan will travel on a guest bus with survivors and other elders, which departs Comox at 5 a.m. and the health centre in Campbell River at 6 a.m. for the trip to the ferry dock in Port McNeill. From there, the group will be ferried to

weeks at a time — to the Pender Island home of her great-aunt, Jane Harrison, and to University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton for her eventual transplant in September, 2012. All of this came with a cost. “Variety was able to help by providing funding for special feeding supplies, formula, medication and meal vouchers and groceries while the family was by her side at an out-ofcommunity hospital,” said Bonnie Allan of Bridge Communications. “What needs to be explained is that all necessary medications are not covered by our medical health care — for transplants, and even for those dealing with cancer and other (diseases).” In addition to funding from Variety, the family also received a generous donation from the foundation of renowned composer David Foster, and more money from a multitude of local fundraisers on Pender and various communities on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. “There were so many, I can’t name them all,” said Rita. Westlind’s mother and his aunt, Harrison, even donated the proceeds from the sale of the store they operated on Pender Island. And Harrison would eventually make the biggest donation of all. While Kaiya was put on a list for a suitable post-mortem donor, family members were put through a battery of tests to determine their suitability as a “living donor.” Harrison proved to be the perfect match. So, by late summer of

2012, with Kaiya now requiring a feeding tube directly into her stomach and her liver nearing end-stage failure, she and Harrison were flown Aug. 14 to the Children’s Stollery at UAH in Edmonton to await surgery. The procedure involved cutting out a small portion of Harrison’s liver to implant in the baby. “It’s like a starfish,” Westlind said of the liver. “It’s the only organ in the human body that regenerates itself.” A month later, donor and recepient were on the road to recovery. It was a road Kaiya’s family was unsure she would get to travel before the life-saving transplant. Kaiya is still on anti-rejection medication, which can lower immunity to common childhood illnesses. But while the youngster has suffered colds and a recent bout of flu, her system has been able to fight them off. And she now looks and behaves like any other vigorous fouryear-old, batting leftover birthday balloons to

Being the mom of a child who went through that, I feel it was justified. “But her system’s adjusted. She’s just like any normal preschooler.”

Hundreds more survivors and guests are expected to attend from across coastal B.C. St. Michael’s, one of a chain of residential schools constructed by the government and managed by church organizations, had room
for 200 live-in students. At that time it was the largest of the government schools under Anglican administration. It drew young children from First Nations families across Vancouver Island, the coastal mainland and as far north as the Queen Charlotte Islands. “The thing too many people forget is that these were children,” said White. “They were

dren in Knight’s Inlet, Elizabeth was finally sent to St. Michael’s at age 10, after her parents had separated and married different partners. Already versed in English as well as her native Kwak’wala language, she served as translator between school officials and incoming young students before she left the school at age 15. George Quocksister, who was an orphan when he was enrolled, escaped from St. Michael’s along with his younger brother Louis, the two rowing a small boat from Cormorant Island to Kelsey Bay. He was later discovered and sent back to residential school — this time in Port Alberni. “The agent told him, ‘Now try to escape,’” said White. After he did just that, Quocksister was taken before a judge in Campbell River and, still a teen, successfully argued that he could support himself by fishing. It became a lifelong career that helped him and Elizabeth raise six daughters and four sons before Elizabeth’s death

Sisters (from left) Carol Bear, Louella Serhan and Maria White are joined by Serhan’s son, Quentin Serhan, at the cemetery on the Campbell River reserve. in 1981. And they were raised without spending a day in residential school. “When the Indian agent came, my dad told him if he touched a hair on any of our heads, he would blow him away with his shotgun,” Bear recalls. “(The agent) never came back,” White added.

Unlike many children who attended the residential schools, the sisters say, their parents were not stripped of their identities. “They held onto the language and the culture,” said Serhan. “They never forgot.” While conceived with the idea of fostering the assimilation of aboriginal peoples into “Cana-
dian” culture, the residential school system was exposed for going much further, by eradicating culture through punishment for speaking their native languages or engaging in any cultural rituals. Next Wednesday’s healing ceremony, hosted by the ‘Namgis First Nation, will seek to close this chapter in history.

Growing a community garden for Campbellton
C
ommunity gardens can bring focus to a com-
munity. Community Gardens are not just a place to grow fruit and vegetables. Community Gardens can include a place for people to socialize, relax, cook together, work on art projects and a place where kids can play. Campbellton Park on 15th Avenue has been identified as a possible location for a just such a Community Garden. “A community garden would be a great place for people to meet, save money by growing pro-
duce and it would really enhance the neighbourhood,” said Brain Shaw, president of the Campbellton Neighbourhood Association. If you are interested in becoming involved in a Community Garden for Campbellton or would like to get more information on community gardens and their benefits to the community, you are invited to attend a short meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 18 from 6-7 p.m. at the Campbell River Bowling Alley (16th Ave. & Petersen). For more information please contact Brian Shaw at 250-287-8807.

Our View
Throne speech overly silent
The speech from the throne of the B.C. legislature would leave most outsiders with the impression that the province has few issues to deal with during the spring sitting. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon read the speech on behalf of the provincial government on Tuesday, outlining the priorities for sitting MLAs over the next several weeks which includes a new rural advisory to look for economic opportunities and focus on the education system to fill a skilled labour shortage. In effect, it’s a ‘stand-pat’ speech that offers little in the way of new spending or initiatives. As Opposition MLAs pointed out, Vancouver Island alone has half a dozen issues that govWe say: Need to ernment could scrutifocus on needs of nize, from B.C. Ferries to the forestry industry. ordindary British While Premier Christy Clark and her Liberal Columbians government focus attention on resource extraction in B.C.’s north, families in Nanaimo struggle to make ends meet with rising costs of Medical Services Plan premiums, electricity rates and ferry fares, just to name a few. As Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog rightly says, increases to these mandatory services is essentially a tax increase. Clark and her team release the provincial budget on Tuesday (Feb. 17), which they claim will be balanced. A chance remains that some of these issues will be addressed at that time. Throne speeches always bring a lot of bluster, though, so when they’re silent on certain subjects, it speaks volumes. The provincial government should use the next seven days to ensure its budget priorities are focused on the needs of average British Columbians. – Black Press
Online Voices ● “Highway 19A improvements get city staff backing” – Feb. 10 Sean Smith I am not sure I will ever understand City of Campbell River - City Hall and it’s priorities. Even after seeing the damage that can happen after a major earthquake (and the ever increasing number of quakes in our area) and after seeing what flooding would look like in the downtown, should the John Hart Dam burst, the Fire Hall is STILL number 4 on the list of priorities......behind compost? One would think that ensuring the community’s emergency services would actually be able to deliver those services, in an emergency, would be of higher priority. Jane Davies Can’t argue with that Sean...if prettying up the highway is needed then just get the owners of the many run down properties along the highway to tidy them up, they spoil the look of the drive into town. Once that is done and the fire hall is upgraded then maybe look at upgrading the highway. To do it without sorting out the overgrown vacant lots and the crappy dwellings is just like putting lipstick on a pig!

Applications should be supported
As one of the individuals that first identified the sites that Grieg Seafood is applying for as being suitable for aquaculture (shellfish and finfish), I strongly believe that these applications should be approved for the following reasons: ■ The sites have favourable biophysical conditions for the production of high quality seafood for which there is a growing demand ■ The sites have been identified as appropriate for the production of finfish through a
multi-stakeholder process that also involved the participation of First Nations and the Province, leading to the establishment of the North Island Straits Coastal Plan ■ The sites are within the undisputed Traditional Territory of the Tlowitsis First Nation, whose leadership is familiar with the B.C. salmon farming industry and who support these applications ■ Grieg Seafood is a company known around B.C. and the World as a socially responsible operator with a strong reputa-
tion for leadership within the international salmon farming industry ■ The salmon farming industry in British Columbia is for many reasons long overdue for an expansion, some of which are; Numerous studies and inquiries have failed to find legitimate reasons for the currently slow pace of approval of new sites; The salmon farming industry in B.C. is governed by a strong regulatory regime that ensures the environmental sustainability of the business of salmon aquaculture; Norway
– a country highly regarded for its focus on environmental stewardship and sustainability- has a salmon farming industry that is 15 times the size of that in B.C. and which operates along a coastline similar to that of B.C.; The United States is a fast growing market for fresh, farmed salmon and today much of that product comes from South America and Europe instead of Canada- a fact that has considerable trade and greenhouse gas ramifications Odd Grydeland
Cherry picking should be done while in an orchard , not while “researching” compilations of scientific data ( Cohen Commission report). You chose a very minute portion of a comprehensive document to ‘assure’ us that all is well when it comes to interaction between our wild salmon and your invasive Atlantic salmon in their feedlots. You use the one sentence that Cohen stated “no evidence “ of negative effects of Atlan-
tic salmon feedlots on wild salmon to further your cause but choose not to mention Cohen also stated there should be a moratorium on new feedlot sites, particularly in the Broughton Archipelago, until enough research has shown they will be “ OK.” Why is it that back in Norway scientific research has shown that feedlot fish is unhealthy for pregnant women and their babies? Needless to say , the scientists
were chastised for bringing this to light. Why it is there a clamour calling for the resignation of Norway’s Fisheries Minister? It is because a foreign invasive species of fish (steelhead ) escaped from feedlots and are digging up the redds (spawning beds ) of the strugglingto-survive few remaining wild Atlantic salmon. Naturally the impoverished Tlowitsis people welcome any kind of hope for a livelihood
and need your money. Who funds the “ongoing research” you claim shows no harm to our wild fish? Do you believe it is merely coincidence that the most recent record sockeye runs happened after your industry’s habit of locating active feedlots on sockeye out-migration routes was forced into change; i.e., fallowing feedlots during sockeye smolt out-migrations? Council keeps open door to sani-station

City council doesn’t want to close the door on re-establishing a sanistation, despite a suggestion from city staff that such a facility is unnecessary. Jennifer Peters, the city’s utility manager, wrote in a report to council it would likely cost the city between $200,000 and $400,000 for a lot large enough to accommodate a proper sani-station. She also wrote that since the 17th Avenue sani-station closed in the fall of 2013, the community has adapted to using other
facilities in the area. “Staff have identified that there is not an apparent need for this service to be provided by the city,” Peters wrote in the report which was before council at its Tuesday night meeting. But council thought otherwise. Coun. Larry Samson said he wouldn’t support staff ’s recommended motion to not pursue the development of a city-owned sani-station. “When we closed the 17th Avenue sani-dump it was under the understanding that staff and the council at the time go out and re-visit a proper sani-station to handle
the recreational vehicles that visit in our city,” Samson said. “Currently, right now as we speak, there is only one sanidump, or sani-station, in our city and that’s at the Shell station at Quinsam Crossing. “We want to pride ourselves on being a community that invites tourism and invites people and their RVs or even the citizens that live here,” Samson added. “To allow this to further not meet the demand I think is wrong.” Samson compared the situation to the neglect of the city’s public boat ramps. “I think all we have to
do is look at our boat ramps that we have let deteriorate and now we’re looking at spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on Big Rock (boat ramp), trying to bring it up to a standard,” said Samson who noted that the city does have options for pursuing a new sani-station while keeping costs down. Coun. Charlie Cornfield agreed with Samson and said he too had his concerns with abandoning plans altogether for a sani-station. “I don’t want to see this item drop off the agenda completely and perhaps we can hear back from staff on that,” Cornfield
said. The rest of council agreed and voted to have staff keep the door open on possible sites and partnerships to accommodate a sani-station. Samson suggested the city partner with the Campbell River Indian Band and take a hard look at the sani-lift station by Home Depot. “Can we not work something out with our neighbours to put in a proper sani-dump there and keep the tourism in the Campbellton and downtown cores, so that when they’re using the facility, they make purchases of gas, supplies, food, go out for
lunch, shop,” Samson said. “To send them out to the (Quinsam) crossing, they’re just going to bypass Campbell River and I think that’s the wrong thing to do.” Mayor Andy Adams agreed with Samson’s approach to partnering with the Wei Wai Kum and suggested there could also be an opportunity to work with the Wei Wai Kai. “Looking at a partnership – I can’t help but think that would be in the best interest of the region,” Adams said. City OKs Highway 19A upgrades KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The city will pursue upgrades to Highway 19A after council Tuesday night endorsed submitting the project for grant funding. City staff had recommended council put that project forward in the city’s application to the Build Canada Fund. The Highway 19A project involves improvements to the Island Highway between Rockland Road and Big Rock Boat Ramp. It will pick up where
highway improvements from Hilchey to Rockland left off nearly five years ago. Coun. Charlie Cornfield said it’s an important project. “I think this project provides a lot of necessary infrastructure that needs upgrading and it adds to the work that’s been done,” Cornfield said, “and I think the boat ramp is especially important to people.” The city has until Feb. 18 to submit its application to the Build Canada Fund, which is a joint funding venture split
between the federal and provincial government. The program provides local governments with two-thirds of the funding needed for capital projects aimed at stimulating community growth. Campbell River is just one of hundreds of communities and regional districts that will be vying for grant funding through the program. Projects will be ranked by perceived value for money, capacity to support long term growth and sustainability, innovation and projects that protect and enhance

public health and environment. The city has benefited from the Build Canada Fund in the past. The Airport Runway Extension project garnered $4.7 million from the program and last year, the city was given access
to a $3.4 million Build Canada Fund grant through Strathcona Regional District for Area D sewer extension. The money, however, was never used as Area D residents shot down sewer service in a referendum last year.

gested that there may be an opportunity in the near future to develop a sani-station in tandem with other city projects coming down the line. “We’ve got future projects happening in the city that may be an appropriate match for the sani-station,” Kerr said. “I think it would be a pity to move ahead with a stand-alone at this time without taking advantage of those future opportunities. “I certainly don’t think it’s going to disappear off the table – I’m certainly going to push for it.”

City tackles Twinning Tides grant takes twisted trail KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
City council will consider helping the city’s Twinning Society which is threatening to dissolve due to a lack of funding. After having its gaming funding cut by the province, society president David Armitage said the non-profit is in jeopardy of folding. “If the Campbell River Twinning Society is not able to secure sustainable operational funding, the executive will have no choice but to make the recommendation in 2015 to dissolve the society and turn the management and operations of the sister city relations over to the city,” Armitage said. The society, which initiates exchanges with Campbell River’s Japanese sister city, Ishikari, asked council earlier this week for $7,500 on an annual basis. The Twinning Society is also asking council to recognize the sister city relationship as a core service within the legislative services division of city hall.
At Tuesday’s council meeting, Coun. Charlie Cornfield made a motion (which was approved by council) to refer that request to council’s upcoming budget planning sessions which take place Feb. 23-25 and Feb. 27. “I would like to consider that, but I think it needs to be considered in the context of the whole budget,” Cornfield said. The motion was made and voted on after Mayor Andy Adams recused himself, declaring a conflict of interest due to his past involvement with the Twinning Society. Adams has recently stepped down as president and from the board of the society, but while serving as president in 2014 he explained, in the society’s annual report, the difficulty the Twinning Society was facing. “If future funding cannot be developed, such as provincial gaming funds, then the future of the Twinning Society and all of its programs will be in jeopardy as other community funding is directly tied to an
organization’s ability to acquire supplementary funding,” Adams said. The society used to receive $5,000 from the province but changes to the provincial gaming grant criteria reduced funding to the Twinning Society to $3,333 in 2011 and $0 in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The Campbell River Twinning Society has helped more than 850 people cross the Pacific as part of the Campbell River/Ishikari exchange program since the sister city bond was established in 1983. Each year, high school students from both cities participate in a yearlong exchange and in the spring, the Young Ambassador program facilitates 10-day, chaperoned exchanges for elementary and middle school students. The torii gate in Sequoia Park is a symbol of the city’s bond with Ishikari. It was gifted to Campbell River from Ishikari delegates to mark the 10-year anniversary of the sister city agreement.

A youth program on Cortes Island will receive grant money from the Strathcona Regional District despite one director’s objections over the group’s affiliation with a controversial organization. Directors approved a $1,500 grant-in-aid for Reel Youth to produce an intergenerational film, but the cheque will have to be made out to Tides Canada, an organization that provides financial and project management
support to environmental groups. Tides is an organization that Area D Director Brenda Leigh has questioned before. “The last time that Reel Youth applied for funds from this board through Tides Canada I voted no because they have $2 million in assets,” Leigh said. “These are supposed to be grants-in-aid to aid organizations that don’t have money. They don’t need money in my opinion.” Cortes Director Noba Anderson, who brought forward the funding
request to the board, explained that the Tides Canada Foundation has a number of financial accounts and Reel Youth is just one of Tides Canada’s funds. Anderson said Tides Canada cannot legally transfer money between accounts, so Reel Youth only has access to funding earmarked for that program. The Tides Canada Initiatives Society Reel Youth 2014 budget shows Reel Youth last year received $25,000 from the Vancouver Foundation, $15,000
from the Telus Community Board, $6,000 from the BC Arts Council, a $2,500 grant from the Strathcona Regional District and $20,000 in other grants. It also accumulated $229,950 in revenue for ‘fee for service.’ Reel Youth made more than 100 films last year with young people from B.C., the North West Territories, Ontario and Vietnam. In the end, all directors, with the exception of Leigh, voted to award Reel Youth the $1,500 grant.

Boomers are booming on the ‘love’ front. According to Statistics Canada*, many seniors enter into a second union after a divorce, separation, or the death of a partner. In 2011, 76% of men and 55% of women who had been divorced or separated eventually became part of a separate union – and about three-quarters of seniors who entered into a second union got married again, with the rest living as common-law partners*. It’s good news when boomers find a second ‘love’ but it can also lead to financial and other complications – especially for relationships that include children from previous marriages, unfinished separations and divorces and other factors that can significantly impact the new couple’s financial and estate planning. Here are some tips for navigating your new financial life together. Common-law and nontraditional relationships Boomers may bring different financial resources, objectives and obligations – especially if one or both were previously married. Start with a thorough discussion about each partner’s expectations and responsibilities for the family’s financial affairs including how each of you will spend, save and invest their money. Discuss matters with a lawyer
and possibly have them prepare a ‘cohabitation’ agreement’ that defines the financial terms of your relationship. Update your wills and list of beneficiaries for your investments held within your registered accounts and insurance policies as well as who will be granted power of attorney for health and financial affairs. Married or common-law When it comes to things like a right to a division of family property at separation, rights to inherit, and so on, the rights of common-law partners can differ quite drastically between provinces. But when it comes to income tax, common-law couples benefit from the same tax advantages and suffer the same tax disadvantages as married couples. It’s always wise to speak to a financial planner about your tax implications, but here are some basics:
• Transfer unused tax credits and claim the Spousal Credit if your partner is earning very little income. Disadvantages • If one or both of you has a child, you will no longer be able to claim the Eligible Dependant Credit for that child. • Only one of you can claim the Principal Residence Exemption if one of you owns an urban home and the other a cottage. • Your income is pooled when determining the right to claim GST credits, the Canada Child Tax Benefit, and the Guaranteed Income Supplement. • Child care expenses may not be as valuable because the deduction must be taken by the lower income-earning partner.
Investors Group
Advantages • Split pension income – a potential benefit when one partner makes significantly more pension income than the other. • Make spousal RRSP contributions on behalf of your partner. • Roll non-registered property to each other without triggering a capital gain or loss. • Roll registered property to each other at death without triggering income.
Talk to your legal, tax, and professional advisors about the right choices for your new relationship. *The Daily, Monday, February 24, 2014 -- http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dailyquotidien/140224/dq140224a-eng.htm This column, written and published by Investors Group Financial Services Inc. he Mirror caught up with singer-songwriter Fred Eaglesmith riding his famous biodiesel powered bus on the road in New Mexico, heading to a gig in Albuquerque that night. Friends of the Tidemark Theatre on Facebook might remember a few months back a call went out for a supply of used vegetable oil to help fuel Fred’s bus. Well, he’s still on the road and will be arriving here in time for a Wednesday, Feb. 25 show at the Tidemark Theatre at 7:30 p.m. AlistAir tAylor Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Campbell River Mirror: Have you ever been out to Vancouver Island before? Fred Eaglesmith: Many, many times. Yeah…probably…yeah, many, many times. CRM: How about Campbell River? Been out our way at all? FE: You know, I don’t think I’ve been to Campbell River. I think that one time I think I was supposed to play in Campbell River once and the ferry got cancelled. I think that was about 15 years ago. CRM: So where do you call home? FE: I live in southern
can see it on Youtube. It’s drums and bass, guitar. I have myself singing and I have a side singer as well. Accordion. Banjo. CRM: And are you kind of focussing on a certain period of your music or do you play, you know, a whole sampler of it all? FE: Yeah, you know, yeah, I’ve been out there for 40 years. I play all the stuff. I play everything. I play the whole gamut.
Fred Eaglesmith will bring his “rock-and-roll-show-meets-Johnny Carson” performance to the Tidemark Theatre on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
Ontario when I’m home. CRM: So you’re touring around right now. You’re riding in the famous vegetable oilpowered bus right now, I assume? FE: Yeah, I’m driving it even as we speak. CRM: Can you tell me about that? How did that come about? FE: Well, you know, when fuel was really expensive about three years ago, we switched the buses to (vegetable) oil and it was pretty good for a long time. It’s getting harder to get now because the oil companies started buying it instead of taking it
for free. So we don’t get to burn it as much as we used to but we still burn it when we can. CRM: You converted this bus yourself? You’re mechanically inclined? FE: Yeah, I’m mechanically inclined. I converted it with a friend of mine. It’s not that hard to do. We tweaked it over the years. We’ve got it now that once we get it going, she runs pretty good. CRM: What kind of a show can people expect from you? FE: It’s a rock and roll show, sort of steeped in the 60s, although it’s original music. It’s
steeped in the idea of entertainment and suits and, ah, it’s serious but its funny. Sort of like the Rolling Stones meet Johnny Carson. CRM: So what makes it fun? FE: You know, I have a lot monologues in between. We sort of poke fun at ourselves. We’re not so serious about ourselves but we’re serious about what we do. So that really makes it a good combination. CRM: So what kind of band are you performing with? FE: I have the band that I always have. You
that time. I listen to a lot. I listen to ELO, 80s, you know, Electric Light Orchestra. I listen to a little bit of Neil Young some times, Tom Wait. But mostly a lot of jazz. A lot of real cheesy, sort of, cheesy jazz. Steve Tyrell and those guys. I like songs. I like songs. And I don’t care what kind of songs they are, as long as they’re good. CRM: Do you like ones with deep meaning or do you prefer stories
CRM: When you’re not playing your guitar or whatever other instruments you play, what music do you listen to? FE: I listen to mostly jazz. I listen to Chet Baker a lot. I listen to rock and roll. I listen to the Rolling Stones a lot. I don’t listen to much modern unless I find some esoteric or something. Something that I find that’s under the radar. I listen to Eminem once in a while just to see what’s up but not too much.
or what do you look for in a good song? FE: I really just like well-written song. One of my favourite songwriters is a guy that everybody hated back in the 60s. I like Burt Bacharach. I like any good songwriter from any era so it doesn’t matter if it’s Gordon Lightfoot or Burt Bacharach, I like them all. CRM: And what

about your own songwriting? Is there generally a theme to any of it, would you say? FE: You know, that’s changed over the years. I started out sort of as a folkie, sort of bluegrass, country guy. And then I sort of become sort of an alt. country guy and now it sort of gravitates towards rock and roll. You know country’s got so polluted. I have sort of moved away from that a little more than I might have if it hadn’t got so polluted.
CRM: Do you think rock and roll has got the same way at all? FE: Well the thing about rock and roll is it went to sleep. It got totally polluted and it was totally awful and everybody quit it. So nobody’s on that highway right now, for me, which is really nice. Everybody’s either playing pop music or they’re playing new country music or whatever else they’re playing but nobody’s really play-
ing that straight ahead, good songs, you know, interesting music. Nobody’s doing that right now and it’s real easy for us to fill that void. It’s really fun ‘cause it’s fresh. You know, I’m using the term rock and roll loosely. I’m using it sort of the way they used it in 1969 when a whole bunch of styles was called rock and roll. It was mostly blues, country and gospel mixed together to make rock and roll. That’s what I’m doing. CRM: Any other musicians that you admire? FE: Oh, tons and tons. I like the Texas guys. Texas songwriters. You know I like the Canadian guys a lot that I grew up with. I was a little younger than them. The folk musicians that I grew up with were stellar musicians, you know, they were stellar writers and I’ve always had a soft spot for those guys, you know. That was sort of the best period of time for me in songwriting, was sort of when I was
16 and those guys were 26, you know, 30 or so. They were fantastic. Still to this day I can refer to that time. CRM: When you’re performing what are you trying to do out there? FE: I’m really just trying to make people, ah, I’m trying to make them do two things: I’m trying to make them have the time of their life and, literally, I mean, the time of their life and, at the same time, be provocative, make them think about it, make them think about their life and what this is. I really believe that rock and roll is the last bastion of liberation. And especially for older people. I really believe it is liberating and I think a lot of seniors and what we call seniors right now were steeped in rock and roll and they had to leave it behind or they did leave it behind for economics. I sort of remind them a lot of times: “hey this is what we were doing.” CRM: You take them
back to their youth in many ways?
FE: Well, I’m not trying to take them back to their youth. I’m trying to take them back to what their ideals were. It’s not nostalgic. It’s provocative. And most of them like it and some of them don’t.
CRM: Some of them want to relive those ideals and some want to put it behind them, keep them back there. FE: Some want to put it behind them because, you know, I was fortunate to be on the tail end of the 60s movement. I was just a kid but I was fortunate enough to be there. I was one of the last hitchhikers out there on the road. I was fortunate to hitchhike all across Canada when I was 15 years old, 16 years old. And you know right now, we’re one of the very last full time travelling rock and roll shows in North America and I sort of get to sweep up every time. It’s sort of interesting, I get to sweep up.

A visionary and an idealist, Sarah’s performances are conceptually innovative, involving photography, dance and theatre. She is the Artistic Director for Pro’ject Sound, a performance project involving live piano with large-scale projected images. She curates, hosts and performs on numerous concert series in B.C., sharing the stage with artists from around the world. An avid collaborator, Hagen has performed with cellist Ariel Barnes, violinist Martin Chalifour, tenor Benjamin Butterfield, Trio Accord, Ballet Victoria, the Emily Carr String Quartet, among many others and had appeared as a soloist with the Victoria Symphony under the baton of Mei-Ann Chen, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony conducted by Mark Skazinetsky and the Symphony Orchestra

Taste trumps all, and the flavor of Sea-licious has been described as the “best-tasting fish oil on the market.” Creating an oil that has tremendous health benefits and is of the highest quality was of utmost importance to Karlene, but her primary goal when deciding on the flavors for Sea-licious was to have them stand out in a unique and delicious way. Compliance, ease and range of use increase when something tastes great. It takes it from something you have to take to something you want to take. Loyal Sea-licious users go crazy over the taste of this delicious oil, and some describe it as “the perfect way to end a meal.”

On Saturday, Feb. 21, the museum will host Rick James, curator of the Rust in Peace exhibit currently showing in the Museum’s Changing Gallery. In the presentation, beginning at 1 p.m., James will talk about the exhibit, providing colourful and intriguing background stories behind the photos of Vancouver Island junkyards. “Back before the environmental movement was in full swing and the auto crusher was sent out to remove old cars from the landscape, many an old 1920s and 1930s coach and sedan was left in the back corner of an Island junkyard to quietly rust away,” said James. “Although I did pick up the odd bit of rusty metal myself, I was

tion, then the outcome is a world that works for everyone. A world that works for everyone? Some say this is a dream, a ridiculous goal, but not Jill Brocklehurst, the Spiritual Director. She believes that when we live in a community where each person is celebrated for their unique gifts and talents, feelings of lack, separation and fear slip away, replaced by joy and unbounded happiness. There are so many paths to this experience. At the Centre for Spiritual Living, spiritual tools such as affirmative prayer, affirmations, meditation and journaling are doorways used to guide each person into a deeper connection with their intuitive inner self,
their personal spiritual journey. It is from this place, the centre teaches, that the still small voice of the heart speaks out. The centre teaches the principles of Science of Mind, founded by Ernest Holmes, and proven to be a practical approach to living by many. The simplest principle, “Change your Thinking, Change your Life” when applied, has a transformational power. Teaching people to live consciously and choose affirmative thoughts renders impressive results. Mary Lou Mahoney was diagnosed to a wheel chair and in 5 years has lost 80 pounds, is riding her bike to and from work and has a small dog walking business on the side. Mary Lou learned
that her old story, “I’m damaged goods,” was a belief she no longer needed to carry. A new affirmative way of thinking created a new way of living. This is just one of many similar stories. Now the Centre for Spiritual Living has a grand opportunity to expand the work they do by offering a wide selection of programs, workshops, events and classes all in one location welcoming all people regardless of race, colour, faith, sexual orientation, or age. Opening day begins at 10 a.m. with a 20-minute guided meditation by Collette Ordano. At 10:30 a.m. there will be music by Noelle Maffin and an inspirational message by Jill Brocklehurst.

The Centre for Spiritual Living has taken possession of the old Elks Hall on South Dogwood, and is excited to continue building community where many good memories linger. Opening Day is Sunday, Feb. 15. Inspired by teaching tools that facilitate positive life changing experiences, the centre is renovating the 4,270 square foot building to create space for gatherings, workshops, meditation groups, life enhancement classes, movie nights, adult and children spiritual programs, body work, yoga, Nia and celebrations of all kinds. The centre believes when individuals feel better about themselves through self-care and connec-
neighborhoods to get involved in the fun by challenging each other to “fight the War” by contributing their loonie(s). This event will increase the public’s knowledge of their community’s brain injury organization and the services that are provided. The money donated in each municipality stays in each community. The loonies will go to that community’s TBI nonprofit organization to provide funding for continuation of their vital services. They’re counting on your loonies to help Campbell River win the trophy again. Your donation (which can include all forms of monies) can be made by: putting it into the containers that will be placed in local businesses throughout Campbell River during that week; delivering it directly to the CRHISS office at 591-9th Ave (under the big orange roof) or through their website:” www.crhead.ca. Contact them at 250-287-4323 for other options or more information and get ready to triumph over Powell River.
✁
The battle continues! Campbell River Head Injury Support Society (CRHISS) is declaring war against Powell River Brain Injury Society in the Sixth Annual Loonie Wars. This is a fun way to raise community awareness about traumatic brain injuries (TBI) as well as provide funds to support local TBI survivors. Starting Friday, Feb. 20 CRHISS is asking every resident of Campbell River to donate a loonie. The donations will be collected for a week until Feb 28. The community that collects the most funds per capita will be declared the winner and their local Brain Injury Organization will be awarded the prestigious Loonie War Trophy. Last year Campbell River put in a grand effort in support and won. CRHISS is determined to keep the beautiful trophy this year and that’s why they need your help and support. They are again encouraging groups such as City Council, schools, service clubs, businesses, churches and

The Bra Lady Is Coming 2x6to Town
Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra. Here’s where Barb Chapman, the Bra Lady, comes in.

The Bra Lady
Due to overwhelming response to the previous clinic, Barbara Chapman is coming to CAMPBELL RIVER, TUES. FEBRUARY 24TH to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly.
PROCESS
“Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.” Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? • Do you overflow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip off your shoulders or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.
You can sign up for Chapman’s bra clinic by calling

maintain their accreditation once they’ve earned it. If a business doesn’t keep to our standards then their accreditation is revoked,” Scott said. “Nobody can walk in the door, write a cheque and say I want to be accredited.” One of the ways the BBB celebrates businesses that have gone above and beyond is through the annual Torch Awards. “These aren’t awards that say a business is good because the majority of our accredited business have an A+ rating,” Scott said.
Instead, the awards are for businesses that stand out from the crowd, such as community service. Awards are given to both winners and finalists, but there are no formal categories. The categories are based on the types of nominations. Each year the BBB receive several thousand nominations from across Vancouver Island. This Year’s Torch Awards gala is Nov. 6 in Victoria. Biggest spiel of the year The Campbell River Curling Club hosted its biggest event of the season last weekend – the 51st Ralph Boyd Men’s Open, The spiel, sponsored by Lordco and Thrifty Foods, was a success on and off the ice, attracting 32 teams from all over Vancouver Island. The Prize Table was valued at over $15,000. All 128 players had a chance for a ‘draw to the button’ to win an $800 Tire Package donated by Kal Tire. After narrowing it down to six semi-finalists, long-time player of this weekend, Shaun Zealand from Port Hardy, was the closest to the button and declared the winner. The Ralph Boyd Trophy, handed out by
Graeme Boyd to the most sportsman like team, was given to the Wayne Harris Rink. Harris was honoured to share this trophy with his teammates – Mike Imrie, Randy Baert and Mike Meeres. The A Event, sponsored by Coastal Community Credit Union, was won by the defending champions – the Schmidt rink of Comox, consist ing of R on Schmidt, Norm Cote, Jeff Pilon and Darren Richards. In the final, they went up against the Darrell Knowles rink of Campbell River. The B Event, spon-
sored by No 1 Autobody, was a fantastic showing of many of our younger men who have come through the Junior Program here in Campbell River. This was a well fought game with the Vlaj rink from Nanaimo coming out on top against the Kevin May rink of Campbell River. The C Event, sponsored by Jiffy Lube, saw the Dean Thulin Rink capture victory over the Bill Thomas Rink. Thulin curled with third Lyle Boyce, second Don Pennell and lead Doug Seely. countless hours making this event the best on the island. Johnson thanks her C o - Wo r k e r Te r r y Kratzmann for his hours on the ice, John LaPointe for looking after the draw, as well as Wylie Leeson for his efforts taking pictures and updating the draw on the curling club’s website.

Rated at 9200 lbs. this truck will be perfect for buyers who want impressive fuel economy and good towing capacity; a balance of usability and thriftiness. This engine has not been rated yet for fuel economy but, thanks to a standard 8-speed automatic transmission, the new EcoDiesel is going to get better numbers than the already class-leading gasoline V6 RAM. Having driven both the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel and this RAM, I find the gearing and attitude of the RAM much more dynamic and actually inspiring to drive. In real world driving situations, this big luxurious truck can actually return fuel economy of 10L/100km without babying the engine. Verdict RAM has seen huge sales growth over the last few years due to constant improvements instead of waiting years to update its rigs. It started with dynamic exterior design, followed by class leading interior, then an 8-speed automatic and now a Diesel. There is even an off-road ready RAM, just shown in Detroit, due to arrive called the Rebel. The RAM EcoDiesel has been selling very well and Chrysler claims they will put this truck up against the new aluminum F-150 for top dog in the fuel economy race. Good times to be looking for a truck. The Campbell River Wrestling Association hosted its annual Campbell River invitational last weekend. Two hundred and twenty wrestlers descended on the River city to compete against the local competition. The tournament was a huge success with many wrestlers leaving with hardware. In the junior girls category Haley Wingert led the charge with gold. Lexus Willis, Zoe Solway and Kaitlyn Jinda earned silver and Keely Elves took the bronze. Hailey Ricardo placed fourth and Chantel Poslowsky finished the day in fifth. The junior boys posted e qu a l ly impressive results. the senior wrestlers put it all on the mat. Alex Jinda finished in third, Ali McPhee and Dawson McKay in second and Hailey Dean and Mike Herman finished the tournament on top,

Waves season goes down to the wire in epic battle The Campbell River Waves U13 Girls Rep Soccer team played a game to remember on Sunday at the turf in Port Alberni. It was the team’s B-Cup semi-final game against the wellmatched Alberni Valley Athletics. Even the weather cooperated as the rain stopped and the sun started shining just as play began. Game Captain Nyla Haider, goalkeeper for the first half, managed some incredible saves to maintain the nil-nil score into halftime.
Sh e w a s g re at ly assisted by the solid defence of Tory Stewart, Emily McLean, Kate Regier and Rowen Flood. The excitement continued as both teams played shot-for-shot in a dynamic second half. Striker Inara Jhawer had two great chances, but was denied both times by the Athletics’ Keeper. Haley Wingert was an integral playmaker, forcing the ball up to the waiting feet of Holly Crosby, Amelia Nimmon and Jessica Revoy. Both Shelby Cyr and
Sandrine Daniels kept up the pressure and repeatedly stole the ball to turn the play around to the Waves’ advantage. With the Port Alberni offence completely frustrated, and some critical saves by goalkeeper Kayla Lund, the second half ended scoreless and forced play into overtime. The first overtime saw more incredible saves
by Lund. The fresh legs of Phenix Konrad, along with Nimmon, helped to open up a chance for the Waves. With the game still scoreless, the Athletics made another push to the Waves end. After McLean’s unintentional handball, and subsequent red card, Port Alberni was awarded a penalty kick. A move off the line by
the keeper allowed yet another kick. Neither one saw the back of the net. Going into the second overtime, the Waves had to play a man down. Despite this setback, the team’s fitness was evident and they managed to keep the opponents at bay. Overtime play ended with no goals scored and led to a shootout

The Storm, meanwhile, have five players in the top ten, including the VIJHL’s premier sniper in right winger Gage Colpron who bagged his 40th goal of the campaign last weekend. Defenceman Thor Rosback is expected to return to the Storm line-up after serving a two game suspension. However, the locals will be without a pair of physical forwards. Gavin Rauser could be out for up to four weeks with a lower body injury, while Brendan Enns serves the second of a four game suspension for fighting. Rookie goaltender Riley Welyk will make his tenth straight start in goal for Campbell River. His personal record now stands at 9-1 since joining the club last month. The Storm wraps up the regular season Saturday night in Comox Valley against the Glacier Kings, and expects to open the playoffs at home on Wednesday night (Feb. 18) against either the Peninsula Panthers or the Oceanside Generals.

Carihi continues to dominate as hoops season wraps up J.R. RARDON CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The Carihi senior boys basketball team continued its mastery over crosstown rival Timberline in the final game of the North Island AAA regular season. But Tuesday’s 73-42 win at Timberline Secondary was not without its hiccups. After racing to a 45-14 halftime lead — which included a 20-2 advantage in the second quarter, the visiting Tyees came out flat in the third quarter. They managed just one three-point basket by Nolan Morrson in the period as Timberline enjoyed a 14-3 edge in the period. “We’re trying to get them to stay sharp in everything we do,” Carihi coach Ray Wilson said of his squad in its final tune-up for the playoffs. “They always work hard, but lose their mental focus at times. “I also mixed up the lines a bit. I wanted to keep the five seniors together and get them out there for the final minute.”
J.R. RaRdon/Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Timberline guard Micah Ash, centre, loses control of the ball as he tries to slip between Carihi defenders Rio Massee, left, and Sonny Hung.
The Tyees regrouped in the fourth quarter to put the game away, with Morrison continuing to pour in long-range shots en route to a teamhigh 19 points. That led an otherwise balanced effort as Carihi placed five scorers in double figures. Sonny Hung finished with 12 points and Brodie Doherty, Hunter Korol and Josh Nelson each scored 10. Timberline post man Dale Straw gave Carihi fits down low and finished with a game-high 22 points, several coming from offensive rebounds
and put-backs. “We need to continue to work on our defence, keeping up the intensity,” said Wilson, who expected a challenge game this week from Ballenas Secondary School of Parksville. Bellenas placed third in the MidIsland division and was expected to travel to Carihi, the No. 2 finisher in the North, for an elimination game to determine one of four representatives to the Island Championships. Timberline, which finished third in the North, plans to travel to Nanaimo Christian,
the Mid-Island runnerup, next Tuesday. Regardless of those results, both teams face another weekend of action as Timberline hosts the inaugural RCMP Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday. The tournament, organized by RCMP member and volunteer Timberline coach Gord Hay, will feature eight teams.

February 26, 1957 - January 30, 2015 Paul Wilkinson passed away peacefully at home after a 19 month battle with cancer. He spent his last weeks with those who loved him, his sweetheart Linda McShane and daughters Millie and Ellie. He will also be greatly missed by those in England, parents Tony and Marlene, brother Mark (Sue), brother Martin (Sue), all his extended family in England are also grieving. Paul was born in Burton-on-Trent in England and emigrated to Canada in 2007. He spent 26 years in the Royal Navy and latterly worked with Helifor in Campbell River. Paul was a great achiever in life and his happy, sunny personality endeared him to many. His huge passion was for motorbikes and he was president of Campbell River Motocross Club for several years. ALLAN A. LUMB On February 2nd, 2015, Allan A. Lumb passed away suddenly after returning home from purchasing groceries. His daughter considers it to be a miracle that she was there with him by chance and was witness to a very quick and peaceful passing. Allan was a very friendly man with a heart of gold, who held everyone he knew very close to his heart. We remember him as a very jolly man full of jokes, laughter, and love. We’ve included a picture from his glory days as we all know this is how we will see him again soon. Survived by his loving wife of 3 years, Linda (after the passing of his first wife Sharon who passed away 5 years ago), his mother Irene, his son Clifton (Autumn) and grandchildren Marissa and Logan, his daughter Alicia, his brother Lorey (Trudy), his sister Sharon. Until the promised time... The service will be held at the Campbell River Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 1935 Evergreen Road on Saturday, February 14th at 2:00pm

LESLIE CABLE
June 23, 1925 – February 4, 2015 It is with saddened hearts we announce the passing of Leslie Cable on February 4, 2015 in Campbell River Hospital. Les was born on the 23rd June 1925 in Blackhall Colliery, County Durham in the north-east of England. He is predeceased by his five siblings: Emmy, Claire, Audrey, Bob and Benny and parents Joseph Benjamin and Sarah Jane. Les is survived by nephew Stephen Darwin and niece Joy Jones. He left the UK in 1957 to seek fame and fortune in Canada and settled in Campbell River, surrounded by a family of close friends. Les travelled back to see his family almost every year. He enjoyed the trips to the States for gambling, until his health hindered travel. Les is known for karaoke, loved to sing “New York, New York and “Danny Boy. Les played darts and pool. He was a bachelor all his life which I think suited him as I am certain all who knew him well would agree. Les loved camping at the lake every summer for days of sun, fish and beer. Les will be sorely missed by all. Service to take place Sunday, March 1, 2015 at 2:00pm, Eagles Hall in Campbell River. A ceremony for a fallen brother followed by an open house.
