North Saanich student wins $5,000 for Habitat Ella Baird one of six runners-up from over 7,000 entries in national writing contest

Thanks to one North Saanich student’s interpretation of the meaning of home, Habitat for Humanity Victoria will be receiving a $5,000 donation. Ella Baird, with her Grade 4 class
at Kelset Elementary, entered Genworth Canada’s annual national writing contest, geared to raising awareness and funds for Habitat for Humanity chapters across the country. “I was speechless,” said Ella of the moment she found out she’d won. “It was probably the most
surprising thing that’s happened to me in my life. It’s amazing.” Ella’s piece was chosen as one of six runners-up from more than 7,000 entries from all over Canada. Her entry won her an iPod, a pizza party for her class and a $5,000 grant to donate to Habitat for Humanity, which she chose to
give to a project in North Saanich. “It feels really good, because I know I’m going to be able to help someone out there,” she said. Ella’s always been focused on helping other people, said her mom Jolene. “We’re all so proud of our beautiful girl. She has been an extremely
patient, smart, beautiful soul of a human being her whole life,” said Jolene. “Always kind, always helpful. I remember the night, her sitting down and writing her little heart out.” Please see: Meaning of home, page 5

tour of industry: Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce
Millwork company is thinking outside of the wooden box Steven Heywood News staff
One of the younger companies on the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s Tour of Industry, Morinwood Millwork and Interior Finishes has turned to new technology to gain an edge. Operating for the last six years, Morinwood has taken software almost exclusively used by architects and applied it to their business. Owner Tom Morin says BIM — or Building Information Management — has slowly been filtering through the industry. “So, in trying to be leaders, we have adopted it. I saw it on a job six years ago, while we were working on the Vancouver Convention Centre.” What BIM is, Morin explained, is computer software that allows his company to create 3D models of a project, allowing clients to see how pieces come together and what a finished project will look like. While architectural conceptual drawings have used the technology for years, Morin said it hadn’t made its way to millwork companies like his. Typically, he continued, clients and workers are given two-dimensional blueprints. Visualizing how something will look based on those, he said, can be difficult. “With each project that we do, (BIM) grows a little bit further.” What the technology adds, he continued, is the opportunity for more collaboration on a job. Morinwood is currently working on the new B.C. Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Vancouver, using their BIM software to show their clients what the finished products will look like. “BIM can reverse roles,” Morin added. “It can allow the builder to hire architects and start the design work from there, rather than the other way around.” As a contractor or sub-contractor, Morin said the technology helps them produce faster shop drawings, previsualize a project, include more complex engineering and prefabricate components more accurately to reduce waste and potential mistakes

Tom Morin, owner of Morinwood on Keating X Rd., explains Building Information Management, or BIM, to the tour participants. during construction. “With the hospital project, we can populate (computer) models with our product and allow for better planning and faster budget estimates. “It opens doors,” Morin continued. “We get more access to new projects — that’s what BIM gives us.” Of course, that technology is only a single component of what Morinwood does. With those plans in place, workers can get busy on the main production floor in their Keating X Road facility. Tour participants were shown around the space where different products are
manufactured using more computer technology as well as good old hand finishing work for good measure. Morin said he chose Central Saanich to locate his company because it was a family decision. The side benefit, he added, has been the fact the community has been a great place to work as well — despite the fact that the construction industry itself can be quite chaotic. “Our focus is on producing small batches, trying to remain efficient,” Morin said. “Working on the Island ... provides us with a few good opportunities and even a few
challenges.” One of those issues is transportation. Getting raw materials for their high-end products can be an issue, especially since much of it comes from the U.S. “There are very few forest products being made in this province,” Morin said. “Especially the cheaper items, like two-by-fours.” The higher-end items he needs, like hardwood, come from the U.S. Be that as it may, Morin added his local workforce is second to none — stable and highly skilled. Plus, he said, the local tax structure in Central Saanich is “favourable.” editor@peninsula newsreview.com • • • • The Tour concludes in the Feb. 18 PNR:

symbol of our nation turns 50 years old on Feb. 15 and at least one local man is hoping people will get out and wave the flag on that day. That’s because it’s the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag, the Maple Leaf. Kenny Podmore, Sidney’s official town crier, a former town councillor and man-abouttown wants to celebrate — even if it’s in a small, understated, traditional Canadian way. “It’s about awareness, really,” Podmore says. “I’m so proud to be in this country. Canada has been so good to me.” Podmore is originally from the U.K. and says he has not only been welcomed into Canada, but embraced. “This is a way of paying back, a
office of MP Elizabeth May might be able to help out with that. Constituency Assistant Jonathan Dickie says the office gives out flags — one per constituent, per year. And these aren’t the small paper flags on a stick, either. Dickie says they are the real deal — flags one can run up a flagpole. They are available first come, first served. As well, the office gives out thousands of Canada pins every year, especially to people traveling abroad. “There’s really a big demand for those,” Dickie says. While there’s no official Flag Day event planned on the Saanich Peninsula, Podmore and others hope folks will get out the red and white banner and show their spirit. editor@peninsulanewsreview.com
thank-you,” he says. Podmore has been reaching out to the Town, business community and others to raise a little flag-based community spirit for Flag Day on Feb. 15. On that day, the nation marks 50 years since adopting the red-white-red colours of the Maple Leaf flag. It was inaugurated as the national flag of Canada on Feb. 15, 1965. Before that, Canada used the Red Ensign between 1868 and 1965, but it and its various configurations were never officially adopted. Canada also used the Royal Union Flag as its official flag until ‘65. While not a statutory holiday, Flag Day is more about paying respects to all that it stands for. Ella Baird holds up her winning submission to Genworth Canada’s annual “The Meaning of Home” writing contest. Ella’s piece was one of seven selected from students across the country and won her a $5,000 grant to donate to a Habitat for Humanity location of her choice.
Meaning of home expressed in writing Continued from page 1
“It was sort of a poem,” said Ella. “Every line started with ‘Home is a place…’” “Home is a place where you don’t have to worry about being bullied,” and “home is a place where you are given shelter, safety and coziness.” The experience of brainstorming the meaning of home with her teacher and classmates emphasized the importance of having a safe place to go, added Ella. “I think my class really under-
stands more about the meaning of home now, because some people don’t have any homes at all,” she said. The announcement came as a shock to everyone, including Ella’s teacher, Lynne Willock. “It’s amazing. It brought tears to my eyes when I found out,” said Willock. In its eighth year, the annual contest is sponsored by Genworth Canada, which this year granted $125,000 to Habitat for Humanity. Genworth, a private residential mortgage insurer, supplied
one grant of $60,000 to the grand prize winner of the contest, and six grants of $5,000 to the runners-up to donate to their Habitat for Humanity locations of choice. The company also donated $5 to the charity for each entry received. Ella’s entry and the other winning pieces can be viewed at meaningofhome.ca. Central Saanich resident Alexis White will be proposing a resolution to council Monday (Feb. 16) for the right to live in a healthy environment. Based on David Suzuki’s Blue Dot Tour, the proposal states all
people have the right to live in a healthy environment, including the right to breathe clean air, drink clean water, consume safe food, access nature, know about pollutants and contaminants released into local environment and participate in decision-making that will affect the environment.
White says she will expand on the proposal, including the District’s responsibilities and roles in supporting a healthy environment and encourages people to attend and support it. The meeting is Monday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Central Saanich council chambers, 1903 Mount Newton Cross Road.

Don’t fear the budgets
S
aanich Peninsula municipal leaders are in the midst of budget time and residents have very limited opportunities to have any input on the services and spending within their communities. That is not to say that people do not have a chance to influence how town and district councillors will spend tax dollars and prioritize bigticket items, such as fire halls, overpasses, civic buildings and more. Those chances, however, are typically one-way streets — as long as a civic body adheres strictly to the Local Government Act. Sidney Councillor Mervyn Lougher-Goodey pointed this out during their Feb. 2 regular meeting. While he was It’s worth the commenting during a different presentation, time to listen in what he said holds true for the input process into the 2015-2019 Financial Plan. In essence, if council doesn’t relax the meeting protocol, councillors can hear from residents, but not respond to questions. And vice-versa. On Monday, Feb. 16, Sidney councillors gather at Town hall to address specific areas of the budget. It’s the first real opportunity for council and the community to weigh in, says Director of Corporate Services Andrew Hicik. It’s a committee of the whole session and while it generally offers more chances for discussion between council and staff, residents can often feel on the outside, looking in. If people do address council’s planned spending and service levels, don’t expect a quick answer. This means it’s up to people who wish to make a point to be prepared. It can be said that a well thought-out argument, one that is delivered with confidence and clarity, can be very convincing. Go in unprepared and that issue you’re fighting for, or against, might not get the desired response. Sidney, to be fair, is not alone in this process. North Saanich and Central Saanich are also in their budgeting process this month. It may not seem like the sexiest of topics, but these civic budgets and spending decisions often have the most direct impact on taxpayers. These plans also provide some insight into the long-range direction of the community itself. It’s worth the time to listen in. What do you think? Trying to reduce speeders here for years Re: the Feb. 6 PNR story on speeding in Tanner Ridge. I wish to applaud Mr. Law on getting the municipality concerned about cars on Bella Vista road, reaching speeds of 60 kph., on his first complaint. I have been trying for 19 years to get them interested about cars on Tanner Road reaching 100 kph, squealing tires and illegal truckers shortcutting in all hours of the day and night. To this day nothing has been done. I guess people living on main roads aren’t considered a residential area where kids, seniors and pets live. Stuart Walker Central Saanich
Way to go, Lego I would like to congratulate the organizers of the Lego Weekend for a wonderful long weekend of looking for the world’s best toy! A job well done by all who participated. Beacon Avenue was crowded with people, so many excited children, the parking lots were full, the restaurants full, and from the look of the traffic, I’m sure there were lots of problems. But more importantly why were so many shops closed and so few displays in the windows? With a massive effort to inform the public that downtown Sidney was the place to be, the closed signs far outnumbered the “get-your-Legostamp here” ones. This is the second time in the recent past where the merchants on

Hit a home run, Canada C’mon Canada. Did you know that children in Africa, indeed the future of that vast continent, are going deaf due to the use of archaic drugs used to fight tuberculosis and MDR (multiple drug resistant) TB? Well of course that is far away from here and doesn’t affect you, so why would you know? This is inexcusable at a time
when there are new technologies available to fight TB. Here’s hoping that we get the message sometime soon, however, otherwise the MDR-TB or XDR (Extra drug resistant) TB will come a-knockin’, right on our back door, and that itchy and scratchy vaccine you received as a child (and hopefully obtained for yours) will be of no use. Canada is a leader in the fight against TB. Yes, though our reputation is suffering when it comes to the environment, Canada established TB REACH in 2009 and has helped to save countless lives as a result. Of this we should be proud. It is time to replenish our pledge to TB REACH. Mere pennies to us: $120 million, will help to prevent the horrible side effects of 40-year-old drugs used to combat TB in the poorer nations. C’mon Canada, we are up to bat and it is time to hit a home run! Connie Lebeau Victoria

SENIORS IN FOCUS
Year of the Senior special events each month Steven Heywood News staff
S
idney SeniorCare has declared 2015 the Year of the Senior and they are reaching out to the community with a series of events. Open to anyone, not just their clients, these events will occur monthly, starting with an open house on Valentine’s Day Saturday, Feb. 14 from noon to 4 p.m. Company President and CEO Shauna Dorko says after 10 years in business, Sidney SeniorCare wants to give something back. “We want to bring in the whole community to these events throughout all of 2015,” she says. “It’s in thanks to seniors for all that they do — and in thanks to the people who have voted us number one over the last couple of years. “I’m going to splash this around as much as I can and I don’t care what it costs me.” While these seniors appreciation events hosted by Sidney SeniorCare are starting off close to home, Dorko says they are reaching into the Saanich Peninsula for subsequent activities. Places like Butchart Gardens, Heritage Acres, the B.C. Aviation Museum and more are on Dorko’s radar. She says, however, she is keeping the event locations and activities close to the chest, to create a little anticipation. Sidney SeniorCare partnered with Panorama Recreation Centre last year and that success could lead

Dorko is working with Sherrin Griffin, of Griffin Design Management, to help market the events. “Shauna has come up with a fantastic idea,” Griffin says. “We hope to make local seniors
all feel special.” She adds the events are family-focused and reiterated that they are open to any senior from the Saanich Peninsula. “Each event will be different,” says Dorko. “We could get the same people out every time and while it’s all about seniors, we hope others will be intrigued. “It’s about creating a life-long memory, to say
that they had a wonderful time.” She says events on this scope are something seniors probably haven’t seen — and might not otherwise. To that end, Dorko says Sidney SeniorCare is even willing to help get people to and from each event. Dorko agrees there are seniors who are more mobile than oth-
ers and the level of overall health can vary as well. To ensure anyone can partake in the Year of the Senior, she says the events will be accessible by most, if not all, seniors. “We find that no matter their physical or mental limitations, seniors do often all gel together,” Dorko says. “They share their experiences, their stories
and energy.” Dorko says over the last decade, she has seen a lot of change in people’s level of mobility as they grow older to the complexity in the care that they might receive — and what public services are being provided. She says all of that can continue to change, year after year, and companies like hers
need to be aware of the needs of all age groups. So, that’s why she wants her Year of the Senior events to reach as broad a group as possible. “Let’s have some fun,” she says. “Let’s build some memories.” Please see: Social event on Feb. 14, page 9

Questions to Ask When Getting Hearing Aids for the First Time

A gaggle of Raging Grannies is coming to Sidney tonight (Feb. 13) to strut the red carpet and serenade the premiere of Granny Power. It’s a documentary about a unique activist movement that started 25 years ago as a satirical protest group in Victoria. Today, the Raging Grannies has grown into an international movement. It’s all part of the Victoria Film Festival at the Star Cinema. There will be songs starting around 6:30 p.m., with the movie playing at 7 p.m.

Acknowledging hearing loss can be a huge psychological hurdle. The hearing aid discussion can be less daunting when you know what questions to ask. A full audiological evaluation, not a quick screening is essential. How much hearing loss is present, whether one ear hears better than the other and where the hearing loss is, are necessary pieces of information for hearing aid discussion. Whether the clinic is independent or owned by a particular hearing aid manufacturer is important to establish. Independent clinics will work with a wide variety of manufacturers to best fit your hearing loss as opposed to just working with one manufacturer. There are different technology levels with subsequent price differences. Hearing the television better or improving conversation in quiet may be better suited to one level of technology versus someone who is socially active, attends important meetings or is often in groups or background noise. More expensive does not necessarily mean best suited for your lifestyle. Dexterity is also important. Difficulty moving fingers and joints may dictate one style over another as well as the size of battery needed. Another discussion is fully automatic hearing aids that adjust to the environment on their own versus ‘customization’ allowing you to control the volume and environment. Lastly, “one hearing aid or two” is a common discussion. Eyes work together for depth perception, ears do the same for sound. However there may be reasons why only one hearing aid is appropriate. There are many questions to discuss with your audiologist and at McNeill Audiology questions are always welcome.

Rated at 9200 lbs. this truck will be perfect for buyers who want impressive fuel economy and good towing capacity; a balance of usability and thriftiness. This engine has not been rated yet for fuel economy but, thanks to a standard 8-speed automatic transmission, the new EcoDiesel is going to get better numbers than the already class-leading gasoline V6 RAM. Having driven both the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel and this RAM, I find the gearing and attitude of the RAM much more dynamic and actually inspiring to drive. In real world driving situations, this big luxurious truck can actually return fuel economy of 10L/100km without babying the engine. Verdict RAM has seen huge sales growth over the last few years due to constant improvements instead of waiting years to update its rigs. It started with dynamic exterior design, followed by class leading interior, then an 8-speed automatic and now a Diesel. There is even an off-road ready RAM, just shown in Detroit, due to arrive called the Rebel. All-wheel drive fun and then some By Alexandra Straub
Montebello, Quebec – The 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek, Forester and Outback have no problem showing the snow who is the boss. They don’t even break a sweat if you’re commuting on surfaces that yield minimal traction or when putting the Subaru Symmetrical AWD system through its paces on a winter off-road course. Let’s take a moment to talk about what make’s Subaru’s system so potent in the snow or on slippery surfaces. To start, Subaru designed its AWD system for perfect balance. The boxer engine, transmission, and differentials create a symmetrical layout left to right. This increases stability in every situation, as there is less weight transfer from side to side. Also, unlike the competitors, each vehicle is designed from the ground up to have a symmetrical AWD system as a standard feature. This makes the chassis and powertrain a harmonious match. Other competitors often start with a 2WD system and add AWD to the same chassis. It’s that kind of symmetry and engineering that instills confi-
dence in Subaru owners. More than 96 percent of Subaru vehicles sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today. The symmetry allows for predictable and stable power delivery to each wheel, which was apparent in my test drive. With the traction control (VDC) on, you might experience a little bit of slippage if you go into a corner too hot. But within moments, you’ll have your back end back where it should be. Yes, it’s a little bit of a killjoy if you’re honing your skills to qualify for a driver’s seat in WRC, but for 99.9 percent of the owners, it’s a saving grace. Subaru’s active systems do their best to keep the driver and its passengers feeling relaxed and calm behind the wheel. Such was the case as the temperatures in Quebec plummeted below -15C. The frigid yet abundantly sunny day seemed like a perfect pair for taking the aforementioned Subarus for a test. Starting the day with the XV Crosstrek, which has an MSRP of $24,995, was a treat. This light-on-its-feet crossover has charm and character. Even with the available CVT transmission, it’s pleasant to drive and has the ingredients to make it a desirable all-season kind of vehicle.
“

Next came the Forester. At a starting MSRP of $25,995, this five-passenger Subaru has some great qualities. Its high seating position elevates the driver to have a great field of vision and the roomy interior and excellent cargo capacity off 974L (seats up), or 2,115 L (seats down) sure fits a lot of stuff inside. Lastly, and my favourite of the batch, was the all-new 2015 Outback ($27,995.) Maybe it’s because I love wagons, or the fact that there’s
All of these great cars come with 220 mm of ground clearance, meaning you can save your money on a snow shovel! Okay, that’s not entirely true, but that ground clearance allows you to trek deeper off the beaten path if that’s what you’re into. Throughout the day’s activities, whether it was engaging the X-Mode system while stopped in the middle of a snowy incline, or allowing the hill descent control to work its magic descending that same snowy mound, one thing is certain: Subaru builds a
an impressive 1,005 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats (2,075L with them folded), or that you can get it with a 6-speed manual, it’s a very well-balanced vehicle. Not to mention comfortable and quiet too. Both the Forester and Outback have a little something extra, too. The CVT equipped models feature X-Mode, a system that further helps you gain more traction in low traction environments, and comes with hill descent control.
strong product. One might argue that they’re a little behind when it comes to styling and aesthetics. But not everyone needs the prettiest SUV on the market or one that is the most tech-savvy when it comes to infotainment. The pillars on which these cars are built are the fundamental blocks that allow their owners to put their faith in them and have a blast while doing it. Top five oddest classic car features By Matt Lewis
Anyone who has purchased a car has faced an overwhelming list of features on the window sticker. Over the years, there have been some imaginative features offered right from the dealership. Here are five of the more ‘interesting” examples.
Lightning Rods Shifter – 1984 Oldsmobile Hurst:
The perfect option for any automotive enthusiast who just can’t get enough levers, the Lightning Rods shifter walks a very strange line between a typical automatic and
a full ratchet shifter. As goofy as it may look, Lightning Rods have no problem putting the power to the ground.
Swivel Seats – 1975 Chevrolet Laguna S3:
It’s a wonder that more cars weren’t offered with swivelling seats, seeing as those troublesome stationary seats are always such a bother to get in and out of. While the swivel seat was designed for easy egress, an added benefit is that your vinyl won’t wear out nearly as quickly.

Dual/Gate) – 1969 Oldsmobile Hurst 442:
stop the needle scratching your precious 45s. Not only is there a generous amount of suspension built into the record player, but the pressure placed on the needle was known to prematurely wear records out.
One of the more sexist options to be offered on a car (to date), the Hurst Dual/Gate shifter was branded as the “His and Hers” shifter. The theory behind the ‘his-and-hers’ shifter was women wouldn’t want to be bothered by changing gears while driving! This option allowed the driver to kick the stick over and access all three gears “manually.” Matt Lewis writes for Hagerty Insurance. Hagerty is the world’s leading specialist provider of classic car and boat insurance. Learn more at hagerty.ca and you can email rsass@hagerty.com
Rim Blow Steering Wheel – 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429: In a time before road rage, Ford, AMC, Chrysler, and GM all thought it would be much better to get rid of the pesky horn button and just have drivers squeeze the wheel. One major defect of the Rim Blow was shrinkage, which caused the horn to sound all the time!

Family Day
Fun
Peninsula News Review reporter Angela Cowan hit the streets of Sidney during the Family Day long weekend. The Town put on a great show — with its famous Lego-themed displays and activities taking centre stage. Businesses stayed open a little later and Beacon Avenue was alive with children and thier parents looking for the next awesome Lego model.

Aiming to celebrate the rich diversity of stories and people on the Saanich Peninsula, the Saanich North and the Islands Green Party constituency has launched a new speaker series called “Stories of Saanich.” “Many of our members attended Elizabeth May’s speakers series,” said Adam Olsen, the interim leader for the B.C. A few weeks later, he confirmed he’d be here. “And it took off from there.” An Evening with Robert Bateman takes place Thursday, Feb. 26 at the Mary Winspear Centre, starting with a book signing and cocktails at 5:30 p.m. Hennigar says Bateman will sign books — older ones and his new titles (copies available there, provided by Tanner’s Books) — to start the night, followed by a

here’s a gala evening planned this month in support of the Rest Haven Foundation — and their special guest is Canadian artist Robert Bateman. An Evening with Robert Bateman has been in the works for weeks, part of the Foundation’s recent efforts to raise money and awareness for programs and supports at Sidney’s Rest Haven Lodge for seniors. Foundation executive director Brenda Hennigar says the gala is part of their efforts to bring some enjoyable events to the community — while helping them out at the same

Robert Bateman will be in Sidney for a special fundraising event for the Rest Haven Lodge Foundation on Thurs., Feb. 26. time. Last summer, the Foundation staged the first Sidney Bed Races event that filled Beacon Avenue with colourful costumes and crazy contraptions. They also held a Walk With Your Doc event last May to help
promote better health. Residents of the Lodge have also been going to Panorama Recreation Centre to learn to swim and get some lowimpact exercise. “We are so excited to have Robert Bateman in our own backyard and agree to come to
our event,” Hennigar says. The goal is to sell 150 tickets, she continues, and anticipates exceeding that. Hennigar says the Lodge’s director of care and her husband were at an event that Bateman was attending and
silent auction. She says they have various prizes, such as two tickets to anywhere Westjet flies in the world, to resort stays and more. Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m., accompanied by two slide shows — one on the history and activities of Rest Haven Lodge and the other on Bateman’s work. Bateman will be the featured speaker after dinner. Hennigar says he will talk about his career, life’s milestones and his important work on get-
ting children to interact with nature. Hennigar says she’s pleased with how the community has responded and the support being offered for the Foundation. For tickets or for more information, call the Rest Haven Foundation at 250-656-0717, ext. 428. Tickets are also available at the Mary Winspear box office, at marywinspear.ca or by calling 250-656-0275. editor@peninsula newsreview.com

AMENITY ZONING | A tool for B.C. municipalities to obtain amenity payments from developments
Micro units part of new complex Steven Heywood News staff
CLARIFICATION TO LAST FRIDAY’S HOMEFINDER ARTICLE The Peninsula News Review wants to correct some information in the Feb. 6 article on notaries public. The PNR erred on the issue of deferred property taxes. The purchaser is not on the hook for these outstanding taxes. Property title cannot transfer to new owners until those are paid off. Also, notaries public compile and clear financial charges on title only — unless hired specifically to clear non-financial matters, such as rights-of-way, mineral rights and building schemes. We apologize for the errors. — Editor Do you have a home-buying or selling story to share? The architects behind a proposed 14-unit apartment complex on First Street in Sidney are blending microunits into the mix. Silvia Bonet, of Finlayson Bonet Architects, presented plans to Sidney municipal council Feb. 2, for what is now a vacant lot facing the waterfront on the east side of First Street. The proposal is seeking a zoning amendment to allow for six more units than currently allowed, three of which would apply for bonus density. Those three units are also the subject of a proposed community amenity contribution of $30,000 from the developer to the Town. Bonet has presented the project to Sidney council before, but prior to the civic election last November. This was a chance for the new council to have a look at their plans. The time between presentations also allowed the proponents to hold an open house for people’s feedback. She says little has changed from their initial proposal to council last summer, other than some unit layout updates and the addition of wood accents to the building façade. “We’ve also moved one building back on the ocean side, so as not to block a neighbouring building to the north,” she said. The plan calls for two separate structures on the property. In between will be a parking area and a visual break, Bonet said, so as not to overwhelm neighbouring

A proposed two-and-a-half storey, 14-unit apartment complex is proposed for a lot on First Street in Sidney. Floor plans, below, outline a variety of unit sizes — from micro units to two bedroom plus den units.
homes with a single, large building. The project does represent a big change to the area, as the lot once housed a single home and garden. This new plan has raised some concern from neighbours as a result. Councillor Peter Wainwright, stating he has an open mind about the project, did add many of the
neighbours themselves now live in homes built in a similar circumstance. “One of the (neighbouring properties) got the bonus density while I was on council previously,” he said. “It’s a big change, from a house and garden to 14 units,” added Coun. Barbara Fallot. She noted the proposal
does exceed the Town’s offstreet parking requirement. “I think any time anyone brings in something new, it’s not always palatable,” Fallot said of resident concerns made to council, “until it’s actually there.” After agreeing that the municipality “sees merit” in the $30,000 amenity contribution, Mayor Steve Price
said the project should be reviewed by the Town’s Advisory Planning Commission. Coun. Mervyn LougherGoodey said the APC will look at it and make its recommendation to council. After that, the proposal would still have to face a public hearing — the chance for the public to speak to council about their concerns. Sidney council agreed unanimously to send the project to the APC. LougherGoodey noted they probably would not have their recommendation back to council until mid to late February. editor@peninsula newsreview.com

Next Sunday, get rid of your leftover bottles and cans and help support the Sidney Food Bank in one fell swoop as a group of students from the University of Victoria help you feed two birds with one scone (because, let’s face it, stoning birds isn’t exactly in keeping with charitable intentions). Cody Allison, a secondyear mechanical engineering student, is partnering with three of his fellow students to organize a bottle drive in support of the Sidney Food Bank. The drive is part of a community group legacy project through a class in the
School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education at UVic, whose aim is to improve the quality of life for individuals or groups of individuals. Past initiatives have included working with the Victoria Boys and Girls Club, the SPCA, the YM-YWCA and performing random acts of kindness. “I grew up in Sidney, and it was really the first thing that came to mind,” says Allison. The decision to do a bottle drive to raise money — instead of a food drive — came about after Allison and the group came up against a university restriction that prevented them from doing any door-to-door activities, including collecting donations. In speaking with the
food bank, they were also told that, being still so soon after Christmas, the shelves are usually still fairly stocked, whereas the food bank’s coffers can be quite low. Allison says they’d like to see at least $1,000 raised by the bottle drive. “We’d like to get up into the four digits, that’d be great.” The group will be collecting bottles at the Sidney Food Bank, 2297 Ocean St., on Sunday, Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pickup may also be available for larger donations of bottles. For more information, contact Cody Allison at callison@uvic.ca. reporter@peninsula newsreview.com
