Still too many young drivers dying: coroner

Photo submitted

B.C. Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe By Tom Fletcher B.C.’s chief coroner has called on the B.C. government to look for ways to strengthen its graduated licensing system for young drivers and consider a pilot project of electronic speed enforcement in high-risk areas to reduce the number of young people who die in car crashes. The B.C. Coroners’ Service reviewed all 106 deaths of young drivers between 2004 and 2013, finding that speed, impairment or lack of seatbelt use were contributing factors in most cases. While

the death rate for drivers aged 16 to 18 has declined by two thirds since 2008, it remains the leading cause of death for the age group, with teenage boys aged 17 and 18 at greatest risk of death or injury. Attorney General Suzanne Anton said the government has no intention of returning to photo radar for speed enforcement, but she will examine the recommendation to test a “speed on green” function for intersection cameras that could identify excessive speeding in areas of high accident risk. Transportation Minis-

www.kootenayadvertiser.com A3 ter Todd Stone said the last review of B.C.’s stricter licence system for new drivers showed a 28 per cent reduction in crashes involving young drivers, but that was in 2006. “It hasn’t been reviewed since, so I think it’s a very practical suggestion on the part of the coroner’s office to take a look at the program and see if there are some means to further strengthen it,” Stone said. The coroners’ analysis showed 68 of 106 drivers were at the “novice” stage when they died. Of those, 18 had consumed alcohol and seven were driving with too many passengers who were not family members, and without a supervisor. There were 14 deaths of young drivers with a learner’s licence, the first stage of the graduated system. Of those, 11 were driving with no supervisor, 10 had consumed alcohol, three were driving during restricted hours and two had more than one nonsupervisor passenger in the vehicle. Distraction by mobile phone use was found to

50

be a factor in only one case. Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe said better data

collection on accidents would help understand the risks. In many of the cases reviewed, the

posted speed limit at the scene was not recorded, and the number of drivers who took driving

lessons other than the ICBC-approved course was also not known.

Break and Enter, drug arrests in Kimberley Subject arrested for Break and Enter

orld with the A d

A 22 year old from Kimberley was recently arrested for Break and Enter in Marysville. Police had received a call on Jan 8 about a break and enter to a business. Video surveillance showed the suspect on the property and subsequent checks by the owner found storage units had been entered and items stolen. The Cranbrook/Kimberley Crime Reduction Unit received information related to the incident and iden-

tified a suspect. He was arrested on Feb 4 at which time police gathered further evidence to support a charge of Break, Enter and Theft and Disguise with Intent. The subject was released on a number of conditions and will attend court in April.

Four arrested for Drug Trafficking.

Four persons were arrested for drug trafficking in Kimberley overnight. Late on Feb 11 a male from Kimberley was arrested and then on Feb 12, around 4:30 am, three more persons

were arrested. The combined Cranbrook/Kimberley Crime Reduction Unit had received information on the two separate investigations and were able to make the arrests. Police seized quantities of cocaine, marihuana and a white powder yet to be analyzed. One person was released without charges, three others, two females (28 and 44) and male (29) all from Kimberley were released for court in April. Police are recommending charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance.

COTR students gain dual admission option with University of Lethbridge

Photo submitted

College of the Rockies students will benefit from a new agreement signed by COTR President and CEO David Walls and the University of Lethbridge.

College of the Rockies (COTR) President David Walls and University of Lethbridge (U of L) President Dr. Mike Mahon have signed a new partnership agreement that gives students a dual admission option to the two institutions. Through dual admission, students can begin an arts or science degree program at the College and then seamlessly transfer to the U of L after two years of study. Eligible applicants who apply for the dual admission program and meet both COTR and U of L admission requirements will be admitted to both a COTR

University Studies program and to an arts or science degree program at the U of L. Students at the College become eligible to exercise their U of L admission upon completion of an arts or science associate degree or diploma. “This new option gives our students the best of both worlds: an excellent two-year experience in University Arts or Science at College of the Rockies and a guaranteed seat in third year at the nearest research university,” says College of the Rockies President and CEO David Walls. “And with a co-op option, students can be gaining work experi-

ence in their first summer at the University of Lethbridge.” Students who are approved for dual admission are considered both COTR and U of L students and have the benefits of both institutions available to them. Some of these benefits include access to early course registrations at the U of L, early application processing for Campus Housing at the U of L, academic advising by both U of L and COTR staff and eligibility for scholarships at both institutions. Dual admission students will also have access to U of L Co-Operative Education work

Cooperative education combines real-world work experience with academic studies helping to ease the transition from the academic world to the work environment for students. “By offering an additional pathway to students, as well as a series of related supports, this partnership will give students increased flexibility as they pursue their academic goals,” says Dr. Mike Mahon, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lethbridge. “We are very proud to partner with the College

is beginning next week for current Grade 10 and 11 students. Grade 9 parent night will be on February 25th at 7:00pm in the school library. This is for parents of middle school students to get familiar with how MBSS works.

Paul Fennema’s Automotive-12 class is working on an Engine and Drive train unit. For this particular unit they ordered a Briggs and Stratton educational starter kit. What is exciting about this unit is that the Briggs and Stratton Company donates thousands of engines every year to school shop programs. Both staff and students are eager to have new equipment to work with.

The Weekday View

Opinion: Shipping raw logs a raw deal by Brian Coombs Forest workers have been saying it for years now. Economists have been saying it for years and ordinary people have been saying it for years. This province absolutely needs to add value to its timber before shipping raw logs out of the province. The recent announcement of 81 layoffs at the Canfor Canal Flats Sawmill illustrates this and hopefully brings it home to the people (read politicians) who have helped us get to where we are now. “We continue in the province of BC to allow massive amounts of log exports, although there are mills that do not have enough timber to run the operations to full capacity,” said a frustrated Doug Singer, president of United Steelworkers Local 1-405 in Cranbrook. There was a time in the not too distant past when it was the law of the land that a forestry company had to take its timber to the closest available mill. While that system was far from perfect, it allowed for a much larger forestry workforce and entire communities sprung up surrounding these mills. And the stats are hard to look at. In 1991, according to a report done

for the government by Dan Schrier, there were 97,149 people employed in forest sector jobs. By 2011, this number had dropped to 46,203. But why wouldn’t those jobs drop off? After all, with today’s equipment it doesn’t take a lot of people to simply cut trees, put them on a truck and send them across the border. The big, often foreign owned, forestry companies don’t seem to mind the situation either, because they have minimal capital costs to incur as they don’t need to build mills or other infrastructure to take our forest. Besides those obvious items, it can’t be said that no one told anyone in power about the problem. Back in 2009,Woodbridge Associates did a comprehensive forestry report for the Business Council of BC. It talked about doing things the old way and predicted a steady loss of jobs and income. It’s proposal was a simple, yet somewhat costly one. “Under ‘New Thinking’ wood operators, for the most part, would be focused on extracting value from the log—not just to maximize log volume throughput,” stated the report. The report went on to

say that capital expenditures in mills and other value added industries would be required, but the end result would be a much larger forestry workforce and a sustainable economic driver that would double or triple in size by 2020. Some have used the Softwood Lumber disagreements had with the U.S. a few years ago as an excuse to ship more raw logs, the idea being that we had better ‘appease’ the U.S. to stay in the game. Considering that most legal experts at the time felt that Canada was in the right and would ultimately win a legal battle, a concept that even NAFTA experts agreed with, that was a bad idea then and still is today. Still, this is not the most irksome part of the whole sad story. These layoffs and the continued selling off of the province’s resources for a fraction of what it could be worth stems from having horrendously poor dealmakers in power. For all the talk of working for business, the province has proven to be a very poor negotiator. This kind of failure and the under-selling of resources would not be acceptable in the corporate world and should not be acceptable to the people who live here. Just ask the hard working people recently laid off from Canfor, which by the way is Canadian owned.

Letter: Against fluoride in our water Although somewhat disappointing, it was positive to see how close the fluoride referendum was. I personally believe the vote was lost due to lack of awareness of the toxic effects of fluoride. Many believe that if they drink filtered water or bottled water, they are not affected by the toxic fluoride in our water system. Unfortunately, this is a false premise. Many do not know that we also absorb fluoride through our skin. When we shower, we absorb

fluoride equivalent to that found in a glass of fluoridated water. Do you enjoy long baths? bathe children or pets? brush your teeth, wash or shave in bathroom sink? cook or wash fruits & vegetables or drink from kitchen tap? wash dishes or clothes, exposing yourself to remaining film of fluoride? water your garden, lawn, or houseplants? use a pool or hot tub? take your children to city water parks or pool? go out to enjoy our fine eating & drinking establish-

ments, & coffee shops? have children who use public showers and restrooms in schools or sports centres? This is just a partial list of how we are accumulating toxic fluoride into our bodies on a daily basis. It was stated on the Cranbrook Web Page as well as by dentists at our info meeting prior to the referendum that Health Canada approves Hydrofluosilicic acid for our water system and that it is non toxic. That is misleading as Health Canada has no studies done on its toxicity. Are we being lied to? Or is it wanted ignorance? Fluoride is toxic to our

immune system and endocrine system. I believe it is time to stop the forced medication (poisoning) of our water system. Please join us at our Next Meeting: For a Fluoride Free Cranbrook on February 19th at 7 p.m. At the Cranbrook Public Library “Let’s get the F- out of our water” For documentation of the above claims, please email me at: greenamnesia@outlook.com ~Frank Fodor A 25-year Cranbrook resident
