back to Port Alberni and the Comox Valley. It is, after all, where my adventures first began,” said Angus, a best-selling author and National Geographic’s 2007 Adventurer of the Year. Angus grew up in Port Alberni and graduated from GP Vanier Secondary in Courtenay in 1990. Two years later, he and high school friend

Dan Audet left Comox on a small sailboat for a 20,000-km, five-year trip across the Pacific Ocean to Papua, New Guinea. The friends had no offshore sailing experience, limited funds, and a 27-foot sailboat they’d painstakingly restored over several months. The trip was the beginning of a lifelong passion for adventure that started when he was 12 years old in

Port Alberni, reading about other people’s adventures. “I told myself one day I would go out and do that too,” Angus said. “Basically, I’m just catering to the little boy that never grew up.” His expeditions include a source to sea trip down the Amazon River, a 7,000km rowing trip from Scotland to Syria, and, a record-breaking trip

around Vancouver Island in 2011 that took just 15 and a half days. Angus is most famous for rowing, cycling, canoeing, skiing, and walking across three continents, two oceans, and 17 countries over 720

days in 2006 and 2007, enduring a Siberian winter, searing tropical heat, and more than one soul-defining Atlantic hurricane. The incredible human-powered trip earned him his title as National Geographic’s 2007 Adventurer of the Year. Along the way, he met Julie (a bestselling author in her own right who became the first woman to row across the Atlantic Ocean), became a father, and wrote four books. Continued / A3

Spring brings powerful emotions Colin Angus lives for adventure. He’ll talk about it at ADSS Feb. 18.

NIC promotes careers through adventures Colin and Julie Angus now make their living travelling, writing, and sharing their passion for adventure at international speaking events. The Comox Valley event is open to the public and takes place in NIC’s Stan Hagen Theatre starting at 7 p.m.; doors open at 6:45 p.m. The school-based events will allow students from across the region to learn more about careers in science, business, health,

trades, tourism, fine arts, and more. At each event, students will have a chance to win $100 NIC gift certificates and tablet computers. The certificates can be used at any NIC campus to pay for books or tuition in programs such as NIC’s eight-month Adventure Guiding certificate program. Find out more about Colin Angus at www. angusadventures.com and NIC’s High School Open Houses at www.nic.bc.ca.

Wellness Matters

February is the month of love. Valentine’s Day on the 14th marked the halfway point in the shortest month of the year. Spring is just around the corner and the hope of renewal springs eternal. February too, is the month of the year seems to trigger the strongest of emotions within. L-O-V-E Doctor Bruce Lipton in his 2005 research; The Biology of Belief – Where the Mind and Matter Meet, says that people look happier and healthier when they are in love. That sparkle in the eyes or the blushing, glowing face is the presence of love. It is also evidence of chemicals being released in the brain when a person is experiencing a loving feeling. Love is such a strong emotion that people only need

to perceive/notice/ think about someone or something they love and the matching chemicals are released. Love releases chemicals like dopamine, oxytocin and even growth hormones into the blood system. When these chemicals are released and interact with the body cells, the cells grow… in fact, they flourish. No wonder people seek to love and be loved in return. Love creates life! S-A-D-N-E-S-S Dealing with the sadness from the losing of love is extremely harrowing on any day. However, when a highly celebratory date like Valentine’s Day rolls around, the grieving experience can be made even worse. There is actually something called ‘broken heart syndrome’, the name for sudden heart failure that comes on after emotional trauma. It was said in a 2013 ABC news documentary that in the 1990s, Japanese doctors first

recognized this syndrome, naming ‘takotsubo cardiomyopathy’. They noted the shape of the affected heart on an X-ray and its’ resemblance to the Japanese octopus trap named takotsubo. Fortunately, the condition is quite rare. It’s almost exclusively seen in postmenopausal women. It is unclear why middle-aged women; perhaps because of hormone levels. While the symptoms are similar to a heart attack, what is happening to the heart is said to be quite different. A heart attack is the heart muscle is cut off form its’ supply of oxygen, either by a blockage or spasm in one of the arteries that supply blood. “Broken heart syndrome’ on the other hand, is thought to stem from a surge of hormones that impairs the ability of the heart muscle to pump. The good news is this syndrome is rarely fatal and most people make a full recovery. Better news is that

Valentine’s Day and this month of love is for everyone. Remember: love is such a strong emotion that people only need to perceive/notice/ think about someone or something they love and the matching chemicals are released. Love is making emotional connection with that which we choose to be connected. You don’t have to be young, glamorous, have a ‘significant other, or be even a human to claim this month of love. All that loves and is to be loved surrounds us. Love, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. If you need to understand how these strong emotions may affect you both physically and emotionally it is a good idea to speak with a doctor or a therapist/ counsellor. eporter Adrian MacNair recently wrote an opinion piece for the Surrey Now Newspaper sympathizing with dog walker Emma Paulsen, who accidentally killed six dogs when she left them in her sweltering truck last May. In addition to the guilt and anguish from the death of these pets, and the public vitriol that followed once it was discovered she’d panicked and lied about them being stolen, she was also

given a six-month prison sentence. It was a punishment some felt was not enough, and others thought excessive. Adrian didn’t condone her actions, but questioned why we weren’t getting this woman who seemed to be suffering from mental illness the help she needs. He agreed she’d made a terrible mistake but thought compensation of a few thousand dollars to each dog owner so they could buy a new pet would have been more reasonable than jail. He also suggested the reason for being so punitive was because Emma Paulsen killed North America’s version of the sacred cow. In a society that treats dogs like fur babies, this was a brave opinion to share.

I didn’t agree with him that they are inconsequential to this world or easily replaced, but I thought he made some interesting and factual points about how most of our society finds it perfectly acceptable to slaughter other kinds of animals for food, yet we consider dogs members of the family. He also pointed out that in some countries they are eaten, disposed of, or completely ignored. But the parts of the article that I agree with or don’t is insignificant compared to the appalling treatment of this writer for simply sharing his opinion. The public outcry has been intense with some readers going so far as to threaten violent attacks against him. Continued / A14

Opinion doesn’t warrant hatred From / A4 Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. She can be contacted at LoriWelbourne.com.

puritanical in regards to a woman’s naked torso as opposed to a man’s. I also did a satirical interview with the mayor of Kelowna to ask about the legality of toplessness in our city. I am not exaggerating when I say that I received thousands of e-mails from people all over the world, many of which were incredibly hostile

and included a few crazies threatening torture, rape and murder for disgracing a distinguished politician. The papers that ran my column received complaints as well, and a couple of them dropped me as a result. Like Adrian MacNair’s feedback, and the reception of many writers I’ve observed over the years, the disproportionate

reaction is nonsensical. Freedom of speech is vital to our way of life. It’s the right to communicate our opinions and ideas, and it’s supposed to protect everyone, encouraging us to think and express ourselves freely. Without this, unpopular viewpoints would be hidden, progress would be restricted and the voices of minorities

SONJA DRINKWATER/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Pie don’t think so!

Gill Elementary School teacher Natasha Mayes looks nervous as teacher Darrin Olson gets ready to give her a pie in the face. Don’t worry: it was all in the name of charity: girls in the school raised $625.63, but the boys raised just a little more, $659.04. The ‘reward’ for the winner was the pie contest. All proceeds were donated to the Variety Club for its telethon last weekend.

CROSSWORD

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, every number 1 to 9 must appear in: • Each of the nine vertical columns • Each of the nine horizontal rows • Each of the nine 3 x 3 boxes

Remember no number can occur more than once in any row, column or box.

would be silenced. I don’t know about you, but that’s not the kind of society I want to live in. Obviously newspapers and other media outlets are private businesses and the owners of these companies can choose whomever they wish to publish. Some more than others will succumb to the concern of losing advertising dollars over editorial integrity. That’s why it’s up to us, as individuals, not to spew hate and behave like a bully just because we don’t like someone or agree with their opinion. We are all unique and we have distinct perspectives to share. Isn’t having a voice in this world something we should strive to protect? Haven’t we learned anything from the voices silenced by terrorist groups? Publicly disagreeing with someone is perfectly acceptable. Any form of persecution and harassment is not.

25. Emblem stamps 26. Competes

Others have expressed a desire for him to suffer an agonizing death and insist that he and his editor, who approved the column, be fired. How ludicrous. It’s one thing to disagree with someone’s ideas and debate the topic, it’s completely another to bully the individual and demand job dismissal. Do these people not believe in freedom of speech? Or do they only embrace it when it happens to support their own point of view? Adrian MacNair was not, as some suggested, spouting hate speech which, by its very definition is an attack on a person or group based on their gender, ethnicity, religion, race, disability or sexual orientation. The only hate going on here came from the absurd responses. A year and a half ago I wrote a fairly light-hearted column questioning why our society is so

EM Salon spells out their business philosophy right in their name. Everyone Matters is the philosophy Michelle Lapointe uses in every part of her business. “We treat people like they are coming into our own home, says Michelle. Of course EM Salon is located in a remodeled home on Margaret Street, so customers really do feel at home. EM Salon has been making their guests feel valued for 18 years. EM Salon is a full service salon and day spa offering quality eco-friendly products such as Aveda, Bumble and Bumble and Phytomer. They even offer eyelash extensions. Michelle also believes in giving back to the community, staying humble and kind and offering the community more.
