Camry
RAV4
For years, the Toyota Camry has been one of the principal leaders in the mid-size sedan segment. To appeal to new and existing buyers alike, Toyota has sharpened the Camry’s claws in one of the brand’s more dramatic adjustments. The most obvious change is the dramatically different front end where a new spindle-style grille/air intake has been installed. There are new gauges, a reshaped control panel and recovered seats with better-quality fabrics. Virtually unchanged are the Camry’s three power teams that are proven stalwarts and remain competitive against the rest of the field. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder is the primary workhorse for the majority of Camrys and provides 178 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile the 268-horsepower V6 remains optional. The carryover Camry Hybrid drivetrain consists of a 156-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine linked to a 105-kilowatt (141 horsepower) electric motor for a net system output of 200 horsepower and 199 pound-feet. The Hybrid earns a rating of 5.5 l/100 km in the city and 6.0 on the highway. Both gasoline engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions, while the Hybrid employs a continuously variable unit (CVT). Camry drivers are treated to a retuned suspension (sport-tuned for the SE version). The electric-power-steering rack has also been tweaked for greater straightline stability and a more direct feel while turning.
Well into its fourth generation and Toyota is making sure its compact RAV4 brings more than just perceived reliability to the table. To do this, its design is rather impressive with all sorts of swoops and curves and an angry-looking nose. The RAV4 is similarly sized to the old thirdgen model, but Toyota says there is more cargo room. Fuel economy is good – 10.0 in the city and 7.6 on the highway – largely due to a six-speed automatic transmission with tall overdrive gearing to cut highway revs. The all-wheel-drive option has Auto, Lock and Sport modes to suit specific traction and driving situations. Lock mode keeps half the power going to the back wheels as long as you’re driving slower than 40 km-h. Sport mode allows wider transfer of torque between the front and rear wheels (as much as half to the rear) than the Auto mode. That’s all well and good, but the real battleground these days is in interior fit and finish as well as technology. The RAV4 is awash with “soft-touch” materials and silver trim bits, which is pretty standard for this class. There are also eight standard airbags and a 16-centimetre screen that doubles as a monitor for the back-up camera, which is also standard. RAV4 is offered in the usual LE, XLE and Limited trim levels. The LE comes with 17-inch steel wheels, which probably helps keep the starting

The base Camry LE arrives with most of the expected content, but stepping up to the XSE and XLE will really make a difference with added sport and luxury content, including power moonroof, acoustic noise-reducing windshield, push-button start and a premium audio package.
Tundra
Sienna
Toyota has made its Tundra more attractive and more appealing to customers. The pickup’s recent mid-cycle facelift that incorporates a new hood and re-profiled grille, along with a three-piece lower bumper and squared-off fenders and wheel wells, has helped make it stand out from the originals. However, the overall profile hasn’t changed: Tundras continue to be available in your choice of Regular-cab, extended-length Double Cab and four-door CrewMax with its extra-sized rear doors. The powertrain carries over with a standard 310-horsepower 4.6-litre V8 and top-tuned 381-horsepower 5.7 V8. Both use six-speed automatic transmissions. Four-wheel-drive is optional, but only if you specify a V8. Inside, the roomy cabins features several improvements to make life easier for the driver, including moving the HVAC and audio controls six centimetres closer. New seats feature better ventilation and can also travel more. Base regular-cab models come equipped with air conditioning and a 6.1-inch (15.5-centimetre) touchscreen display with Bluetooth short-range wireless networking and a backup camera. Adding more doors to the cab automatically gets you more, although many of those standard features can be added to regular-cab models by choosing the SR5 Package and the SR5 Plus Package. Platinum includes perforated diamond-pleated leather seats and instrument panel, along with
The Sienna remains one of the best: a familiar face at soccer games and cheerleading practice, while also being stylish transport for carting friends and family around with relative ease. For 2015, Toyota has given the Sienna a thorough reworking inside and out. The basic shell remains the same, but there’s a reshaped grille, while the new headlights are thinner, and optional LED running lights help spice up the higher trims. The engine remains a 268-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 offering that comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. Its proverbial “ace” is the all-wheel-drive option that separates the Sienna from the rest of the minivan herd. Sienna has managed to maintain its popularity with smart features and enough capacity to cart up to eight friends and/or family members (seven if the optional second-row highback chairs are selected to replace the 40-20-40 option). Pretty much everything the driver can see or touch is new, including soft-touch materials on the doors and dash, a three-spoke heated steering wheel, center console and transmission shifter. The 2015 model range for Canada includes base, LE, SE and Limited and all-wheel-drive models in LE and XLE trims. Even base models come well equipped with tri-zone air conditioning (driver, passenger and rear), multi-adjustable driver’s seat, tilt and telescopic steering wheel plus the usual power-controlled goodies. Going up the line adds everything from heated leather seats to

The Platinum 1794 Edition Toyota’s take on Ford’s King Ranch or Ram’s Laramie Longhorn. As a true “factory option,” it’s billed as a tribute to the ranch, founded in the year 1794, where the Tundra plant is located in Texas. You get a saddle-brown leather touches with suede inserts, and similar luxury equipment to the Platinum.

In the top-level Sienna Limited, the mid-row buckets turn into reclining lounge seats that also feature swing-up foot rests for maximum self-indulgent travel. The third-row bench folds flat into the load floor when not needed. A neat option is Driver Easy Speak that allows the driver to get the attention of rear passengers through a built-in microphone.

Mirage
Lancer
The Mirage enters its second year in North America the same way as its first year, as one of the least expensive new cars for sale. The four-door, five-passenger Mirage is manufactured in Thailand for Mitsubishi’s European and Asian markets and is larger than the Chevrolet Spark in most key exterior measurements. However, it’s smaller than the Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit and Hyundai Accent hatches. The Mirage is perched low to the ground on tiny 14-inch wheels while the rounded and somewhat stubby front gives the car a cute-in-its-own-way appearance that belies its wind-cheating drag coefficient. Although the front doors and liftgate are generously sized, smallish rear doors and a sloping roofline hamper three-in-a-pinch rear-seat access. The interior appointments are simple, yet tasteful, with easy-to-read gauges and controls. The 60:40 split rear seat can be folded down for added stowage (although you won’t get a perfectly flat load floor), but even when occupied there’s reasonable space for groceries and gear. Of course, contemplating a vehicle this small usually involves compromises and in the Mirage’s case you give up room in return for exemplary fuel economy. The car’s pump-passing nature comes from a 74-horsepower 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine mated to your choice of a five-speed manual transmission or optional continuously variable unit (CVT). The latter features something called
With the Lancer entering its eighth model year, Mitsubishi continues to eschew the kind of frivolous updating that other automakers regularly bestow on their offerings. That seems fine with most buyers who appreciate the Lancer’s straightforward interior/exterior styling and range of efficient powerplants. The Lancer’s trim levels – base DE, SE, SE Limited, SE AWC (All Wheel Control) and GT – carry over for 2015, as does the scared-rabbit-imitating Lancer Evolution. Base models come with a 148-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission or an optional continuously variable unit. The SE and the tough-looking GT AWC models are upgraded to a 168-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine mated to continuously variable transmissions. The Ralliart and the Evolution are where things get really fun. These guys duke it out with their Subaru WRX and WRX STI competitors on the street and the world’s rally racing circuits. Both feature all-wheel-drive and turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines. There’s 237 horsepower to play with in the Ralliart, while the Evo spools out 291. As well, the Ralliart makes do with a less sophisticated suspension setup and lacks the Evo’s slightly wider front fenders and rally-inspired front bucket seats. The turbocharger is a bit smaller, hence the Ralliart’s lower power rating, and the standard six-speed paddle-shift manual gearbox
Base price (incl. destination): $13,700 Type: Four-door hatchback Base engine (hp): 1.2-litre DOHC I4 (74) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual; continuously variable (opt.). l/100 km (city/highway): 6.4/5.3 (CVT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver’s side knee airbag; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 845 Idle Neutral Logic, which automatically shifts the transmission into neutral when stopped to save fuel, then switches back into drive mode when the go pedal is pushed. Mitsubishi is touting 6.4 l/100 km in the city and 5.3 highway for the CVT, which is better than the Chevy Spark’s 7.7/6.1 rating with a similar transmission. The base ES is pretty basic, with no air conditioning or power locks and rear-seat windows that you manually roll. To get A/C plus tilt steering, keyless entry and other niceties you’ll have to step up to the ES Plus or SE trims.
Outlander
RVR
Mitsubishi didn’t waste much time tweaking the new-for-2014 Outlander’s looks and internal workings for the 2015 model year. But more and more these days you do what must be done to remain competitive and capture the attention of new-car shoppers. And that means being fast to make changes. The Outlander shares the pre-2014 version’s platform and basic dimensions, equating to nearly identical space for passengers and cargo. The standard 2.4-litre four-cylinder produces 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. It’s standard with the front- and all-wheel-drive ES trims, while the SE-AWC and top-flight GTS-AWC get a 3.0-litre V6 that makes 224 horsepower and 215 pound-feet of torque. The 2.4 is hitched to a continuously variable transmission that for 2015 has been further adjusted to more closely mimic a traditional multi-speed automatic. The V6, which is standard in the SE AWC and GTS-AWC, has exclusive use of a six-speed automatic. The four-cylinder rates 9.5 l/100 km in the city and 7.5 on the highway, while V6 pulls down 11.5/8.4. Mitsubishi’s “Super All-Wheel Control” (all-wheel drive) is optional with the base ES trim, but standard in the SE AWC. However the GTS-AWC comes standard with Super All-Wheel Control. That unit includes a drive mode selector with AWC ECO, Normal and Snow/Lock positions. With a starting price, including destination charges, of $27,450, the Outlander ES arrives with
In an ever-shrinking lineup, the RVR remains one of Mitsubishi’s more popular (and darned attractive) models. That being the case, it’s good to see the automaker provide continual updates to make it a more attractive proposition for new-car shoppers. From the driver’s perspective, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) now comes with seven “speeds”, which should reduce the rubber-band sensation that plagues some of these units. The CVT is also credited with slightly improving the RVR’s fuel economy. In addition, the RVR’s more efficient electric-power-steering unit also plays its part in conserving fuel. Providing the thrust is a Lancer-based 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard in the base ES and SE front-wheel-drive models, while the CVT is optional in the SE, but standard on all-wheeldrive SE and GT versions (the latter includes paddle shifters). The RVR’s all-wheel-drive is controlled through a floor console switch. Under normal driving conditions, the vehicle remains in front-wheel-drive, but when tire slip is detected, up to 70 per cent of the torque can be directed to the back wheels. The AWD unit can also be set to the “Lock” position that maintains a 60:40 torque split when the situation calls for maximum traction from all four wheels. The base ES includes a goodly assortment of standard features that will

The GTS-AWC entices with a premium interior, audio package, bright xenon headlamps and new-for-2015 wheel designs. From that point the load factor can be increased with option packages containing heated leather-covered seats, power sunroof and tailgate and a Rockford Fosgatebrand sound system, to name a few. Note that you’ll have to order the SE AWC or GTS-AWC to get the extra flat-folding third-row seat that’s included on these models.

Weight (lb.): 1,300 is not quite as sophisticated as the Evolution MR’s unit, although it’s still excellent and a lot of fun to drive. The standard transmission is a five-speed manual in the Evolution GSR. Sadly, the Evo enters its final year with no replacement in sight. Also unfortunate is the cancellation for 2015 of the Lancer Sportback, with its handy hatch opening.

please most bargain hunters. Standard content progressively increases as you move through a number of trim and package levels before arriving at the GT AWC (All Wheel Control). Along with allwheel-drive, the GT gets a panoramic fixed-glass sunroof, climate control, keyless entry and ignition, rain-sensing windshield wipers, premium seat fabrics, 18-inch wheels (16-inchers are standard) and special interior and exterior trim. In addition, a mega-sized sunroof, mega-watt sound system and a navigation/rear-view camera combo are available. Other minor changes for 2015 include additional insulation and thicker front-door window glass for all models.

F-150
Mustang
The world’s best-selling pickup looks to hold on to its title despite General Motors and Ram charging hard to catch up. It’s the truck category that leads the way these days in technology advancements and Ford’s adoption of aluminum body panels for the F-150 (to be joined by Ford’s Super Duty series for 2016) is one heck of a game changer and in more ways than one. Ford’s switch from steel to more dent- and ding- and rust-averse aluminum body panels will save as much as 315 kilograms (Ford claims) in the process, depending on whether you’re talking about regular-, extended SuperCab or four-door SuperCrew versions. All are perched on a new ladder-type frame that’s also stronger and actually a bit lighter. That reduced heft allows properly kitted-out F-150s to tote and tow bigger payloads, which is what pickup trucks are all about, right? Base trucks now come with a new 3.5-litre V6 with 283 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, while an equally new twin-turbo 2.7-litre V6 that’s rated at 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque is optional. Carried over from last year are two of Ford’s workhorse powerplants: a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 producing 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque; and a 5.0-litre V8 worth 385 horsepower and 387 pound-feet of torque (up from 360/380). That leaves out last year’s 411-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 that was standard in the way-off-road-capable
A lengthy promotional blitz has finally culminated with the launch of a brand new Mustang. Ford has high global hopes for its latest Ponycar (a term coined specifically for cars in the Mustang’s class) since both left- and right-hand drive versions will be sold in Europe and Asia. That could also explain a certain Euro-styling vibe that the Mustang exudes, especially in the delicate sweep where the roofline meets the rear deck and swoopy tail panel. At the opposite end, the Mustang’s grille and lower air intake are remarkably similar to what you’ll find on the 2014 edition. Also essentially unchanged are both the base 3.7-litre V6 that makes 300 horsepower (down slightly from 305) and the 5.0-litre V8 in the GT with an output of 435 horsepower, up from 420. Slotted between the two is a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder unit that’s rated at 310 horsepower. All three engines will be available in the Mustang coupe and convertible with a cloth top that raises and lowers twice as quickly as before. From a driver’s perspective, the Mustang’s sixspeed manual transmission has been reworked for smoother shifts. A six-speed automatic, now with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, is optional. For 2015, Ford has finally ditched the Mustang’s stone-age solid rear axle setup and replaced it with a more modern independent rear system (along with a new front suspension) that promises a better ride, improved handling in the

Inside, the cabin, or “office” for many truck owners, has been completely transformed and on up-level models approaches luxury-car standards, particularly the Lariat and King Ranch trims. corners and added interior and stowage space. The distance between the front and rear axles was also increased and the car now sits a bit lower to the ground. The interior has also been completely retooled with large round gauges and an equally sizable touch-screen that dominates the control panel. Of all the available options to be had on the Mustang, one of the more intriguing is a Track Apps package. It includes a “line lock” feature that holds the front brakes so the driver can, in Ford’s words, “warm up the tires” (i.e. burn up the tread in a cloud of smoke).
MKC
Transit Connect Ford is trying to not refer to the 2015 Transit Connect Wagon as a minivan. In fact, in Ford’s press and promotional literature it’s referred to as the un-minivan. But one walk around this big-roofed rig with its dual-sliding side doors and up to seven-passenger seating capacity is enough to confirm that “minivan” is the most relevant designation, even if it’s from Europe. The TC Wagon is the junior-sized civilian offshoot of a series of windowless commercial-vans heading to North America from Ford’s factory in Spain. Size-wise, it falls into the compact class, which means it’s significantly smaller than more traditional minivans from Chrysler, Toyota and Honda. The TC Wagon is offered five- and sevenpassenger sizes that are separated by nearly 40 centimetres in length and in the distance between the front and rear wheels. The pair replaces the original five-passenger Transit Connect van that arrived for the 2010 model year. The five-passenger TC Wagon’s just-right size is more aesthetically pleasing, but for larger families the elongated seven-seat version will likely get the nod. With three distinct trim levels – XL, XLT and Titanium – the TC Wagon can be spiced up just about any way you want, from utilitarian basic to full-on premium class transporter with leather seat coverings, king-size panoramic glass roof, a navigation

You can select either a cargo-van-style sidehinged rear doors, or a more traditional liftgate. In either case, the split-folding second-row – and the dual fore-and-aft-sliding third-row seats found in extended models – can be flattened for maximum stowage. The TC Wagon will accommodate up to 545 kilograms of cargo and tow up to 900 kilos. The starting point engine is a 169-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, while a 178-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder “EcoBoost” powerplant is optional.
The new-for-2015 MKC faces off against the BMW X3 Mercedes-Benz GLA and other upscale car-based wagons. Lincoln’s design team began with the Ford Escape platform and created a unique and handsome shape. The MKC’s luxury content ensures there will be little, if any, commonality with the Escape. It’s also a quieter inside, thanks in part to Active Noise Control, which uses hidden microphones and a special control module to create opposing sound waves sent through the car’s speakers that cancel out unwanted engine noises. The system can be combined with continuously adjustable shock damping, power-assisted electric steering, variable transmission shift mapping plus traction and stability control to form “Lincoln Drive Control.” The result, says Lincoln, is improved ride and handling in Normal, Sport, or Comfort modes, as selected by the driver. The base turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder makes 240 horsepower and a stout 270 poundfeet of torque. The optional 2.3-litre turbo-four is rated at 285 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Each is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shift controls. All-wheel-drive is included regardless of which engine you choose. Base models include dual-zone climate control, heated power-adjustable frontrow leather seats, backup camera, and “Lincoln Premium Sound” with voice-activated communications and infotainment systems.

Opting for the more expensive (by about $10,000) turbo-2.3 model adds a voice-activated navigation system, heated and cooled front seats and heated rear seats, hands-free power liftgate and blind-spot detection that detects vehicles approaching from either side on the highway. More leading-edge protective safety items can be yours if you tick off the appropriate option boxes.

Golf
Jetta
VW’s seventh-generation hatchback is arriving from the automaker’s new factory in Mexico, to be followed later by a new Golf wagon and electric e-Golf. Size-wise, the 2015 edition has grown by a few centimetres, most of it between the front and rear wheels, while width has increased slightly. The elongated appearance is enhanced by a slight reduction in body height, but interior volume has increased. The front seats are well bolstered and the soft-touch dashboard and angled (toward the driver) control panel have an upscaleness commonly reserved for more expensive Germany-based brands. The Golf now comes with a 14-centimetre touch-screen infotainment system that responds to swiping and pinch zooming, just like most smart phones. The base version uses a turbocharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder that generates 170 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. It replaces the previous 2.5-litre five-cylinder that also pumped out 170 ponies, but only 177 pound-feet. Optional is the Golf TDI’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel that makes 150 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, which is a gain of 10 horsepower (but the same torque rating) from the previous TDI. The 1.8 can be ordered with a five-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic, while the TDI shifts with a six-speed manual, or extra-cost six-speed automated manual. Selecting the sporty Golf GTI gets you an
No other small car on the market has the variety of available powertrain choices that the Jetta offers. That makes Volkswagen’s entry-level sedan the epitome of versatility. Back for yet another season is the 115-horsepower four-cylinder in the base models. More spice comes with the newly available 170-horsepower turbo-four-cylinder while the 210-horsepower turbo-four in the GLI is the top peformer. Then there’s the new-for-2015 150-horsepower turbo-diesel. Not to be forgotten is the Jetta Turbocharged Hybrid that’s uniquely teamed with a seven-speed automated manual gearbox (DSG). The Hybrid can run for 1.9 kilometres on electricity alone at speeds up to 70 km-h and accelerate to 60 mph (96 km-h) from rest in less than nine seconds. However at $38,300 fully loaded, you’ll have to judge for yourself if you would be better off in the long run sticking with the diesel-sipping Jetta TDI that starts at $25,300 and tops out at $31,000 for the loaded Highline model. All models have been treated to a front- and rear-end reshaping plus a revised instrument cluster and revised dashboard and seat trim. For 2015, base Jettas comes in Trendline and Trendline+ trims, while the 1.8-turbo models and the TDI arrive in Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The GLI offers up a base trim as well an Autobahn model. Added to the 1.8 Comfortline is a new Sport Package that includes unique alloy wheels, alloy

GTI transmission choices mirror those for the TDI: a six-speed manual, or optional six-speed automated manual. Golf for Canada is available in the usual Trendline/Comfortline/Highline trims.
Beetle
Tiguan
The Beetle is one of those polarizing models where people are either very yes or very no about whether they could see themselves behind the wheel. Ultimately, when the new-car retro-trendy feelings wears off, there needs to be a good, solid vehicle to fall back on. One that gets good fuel economy, too. As such, model-year 2014 was one of transition for the Beetle as it shed its old 2.5-litre fivecylinder engine and took on a new turbocharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder that makes the same 170 horsepower but more torque. More importantly, VW says that the turbo achieves an improvement in overall fuel economy. Returning unchanged is the 2.0-liter turbocharged gas engine that drinks from the premium pump and makes 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. However, fans of the TDI will appreciate the new-for-2015 2.0-litre turbo-diesel that produces 150 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission and optional six-speed automatic are offered in base Bugs, while a six-speed manual or an available six-speed paddle-shifted manual (called the DSG) can be had with either the TDI or 2.0-litre turbo gasoline editions. Entry-level Beetles showcase numerous poweroperated accessories plus air conditioning, clothcovered seats and an eight-speaker stereo. Among the variety of options is a panoramic sunroof,
With so many other compact tall wagons to choose from that are priced starting in the low- to mid-$20,000 range, the Volkswagen Tiguan can be a tough sell. Still, with its superior level of performance and highly touted optional 4Motion all-wheel-drive, VW’s junior multi-tasker enjoys a small, but loyal following. The Tiguan (the splicing of the words tiger and iguana) competes in the same category as the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape and Kia Sportage, to name just a few. The Tiguan is as equally appealing on the inside as its handsome sheetmetal is on the outside, including a high-end-style dash, cleanly tailored seats and premium carpeting. Rear-seat passengers will appreciate the 15-centimetres of fore/aft travel as well as the reclining 60/40 split seat back. For more cargo space, the rear seat back, as well as the front passenger bucket, can fold flat. The space is further increased by an extra-low load floor. Tiguan is powered by a 200-horse 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder connected to a sixspeed manual transmission (front-wheel-drive only in base Trendline trim) or optional six-speed automatic. Tiguan runs the spectrum with Trendline, Comfortline and Highline trim levels and plenty of base equipment of the air/cruise/power variety. There’s also an electronic parking brake and hill

Mazda 3
CX-5
It’s rare to find beautiful mainstream vehicles in this highly regulated, ultra-competitive market, but Mazda’s redesigned sedan and hatchback models get the vote. They emulate the mid-size Mazda6 sedan and the CX-5 wagon, which means they no longer wear Cheshire-cat grins affixed to their snouts. Instead, both adopted Mazda’s latest Kodo (Japanese for “Soul of Motion”) design approach that includes an attractive, but less gimmicky grille. The rest of the bodywork is equally tasty from any vantage point. Like its Mazda6 and CX-5 brand mates, the Mazda3 benefits greatly from the SkyActiv suite of structural and powertrain enhancements. That means a stiffer platform and finely tuned suspension and steering components geared to sportscar-like precision. But the real show-stoppers are the base and optional powerplants. There’s a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that makes 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque; the optional 2.5-litre four-cylinder peaks with 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. Both are available with six-speed manual transmissions, while six-speed automatics are optional. Fuel economy is good as you would expect and it’s a bit better even with the optional “i-ELOOP” capacitor that stores electricity generated under braking. The system provides power for the 3’s various electrical components for extended
Mazda is on a roll with its latest generation of vehicles. The attractively designed five-passenger CX-5’s mechanical bits are promoted under the “Skyactiv” name that made its initial appearance with the 2012 Mazda3. More than simply a marketing slogan, SkyActiv represents a holistic transformation of the powertrain plus various other components that help save fuel in addition to turning Mazda vehicles into better driving machines. From a chassis and suspension perspective, the automaker’s engineers have attempted to infuse the vehicle with as much MX-5 Miata-type sporty behaviour as possible, combined with highly efficient engines and transmissions. The base powerplant consists of a highcompression 2.0-litre four-cylinder that, due to its unique design, is able to run on low-grade 87-octane fuel. Output is rated at 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. The much peppier 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 184 horses and 185 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are available in front- or all-wheeldrive, but the 2.0 is the only engine that can be had with a manual transmission (front-wheeldrive only). For about 25 large, including destination charges, the base GX includes the 2.0 and the usual air conditioning and power-operated items, along with cruise control and push-button start.
Base price (incl. destination): $17,700 Type: Four-door, front-wheel-drive compact sedan and hatchback wagon Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (155) Optional engines (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (184) Layout: Front engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) L/100 km (city/highway): 8.0/5.8 (2.0, MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; sidecurtain airbags (opt.); anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (lb.): 1,270 periods while disengaging the alternator, which reduces drag on the engine. The driver is unaware that i-Eloop is operating. Mazda3 and GX Sport body styles are also available in GS and GT trim, the latter fitted with enough standard and available comfort and safety content to rival many socalled luxury vehicles. Regardless of your choice, the new Mazda3 is an impressive piece of work that will be appreciated by those who really enjoy driving something sporty, but without the space limitations that traditional sports cars impose.
Mazda 5
Mazda 6
With nearly a million sold in its quarter-century life, the MX-5 Miata’s claim to the title of the world’s most popular sports car gets little argument. The current edition is now in its final season and will be replaced by a completely new version for the 2016 model year that has been designed in conjunction with Fiat’s Alfa Romeo division. That makes the upcoming MX-5 related through corporate marriage to Chrysler. Once marketed in North America as the Miata and now with its alphanumeric MX-5 prefix tacked on, the roadster is at its best when negotiating snaky two-lane roads. The 167-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder powerplant is a gem, but owners will only get to enjoy reaching its lofty limits if they opt for either the base five-speed manual transmission or the optional six-speed manual. Selecting the extra-cost six-speed automatic with shift paddles cuts the maximum revs to 6,700 and lowers the engine’s power rating to 158. Either way, that doesn’t sound like much power for a sporty car, and it really isn’t. However, the MX-5 doesn’t weigh a lot, so it feels peppy enough. Two roofs are available: a manually operated soft top secured by a central latch that can be opened or closed from inside the cockpit; and the optional Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) that raises or lowers in about 12 seconds and stows in the same spot as the soft
Mazda should be praised for following through on its promises. Mazda’s SkyActiv philosophy keeps turning out cars that are trimmer. That philosophy also extends to not offering a hybrid powertrain option, which is tantamount to sacrilege. Instead, it pursues internal-combustionengine refinement under the SkyActiv label. From most angles, the Mazda6 is more expressive than the previous car and closely resembles Mazda’s Shinari and Takeri concept cars that revealed a new styling direction. The distance between the front and rear wheels was increased by about five centimetres for extra passenger room, while overall length has been reduced by about the same amount. The only engine is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that makes 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. The uniqueness of this engine is its higherthan-usual 13:1 compression ratio that gives it much of its extra punch. In addition, its specialized components, including the pistons and direct fuel-injection system (which cools the combustion chambers to allow the higher compression), means it can run on regular-grade fuel. One promise Mazda has delayed is its 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel with 173 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, which has been shelved for at least another calendar year while it sorts out emission/performance issues. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual that uses a MX-5 Miata-inspired short-throw

version without compromising trunk space. Also carried over are the MX-5’s trim levels. Base GX models remain fairly basic, although up-level versions feature air conditioning. Along with the six-speed gearbox, the GS adds a few more goodies plus 17-inch wheels and the power-retracting hardtop. The GT also gets the retractable hardtop plus extra-bright xenon headlights, climate control, heated leather seats and a premium Bose sound system.
Base price (incl. destination): $24,900 Type: Four-door compact tall wagon Engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (155) Optional Engine: 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (185) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 9.0/6.8 (2.0, FWD, MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; antilock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,450
Head up the line and you’ll find the GS and GT models, both equipped with the 2.5. The top-end GT comes with a nine-speaker Bose-brand audio system, 19-inch wheels, standard all-wheel-drive, dual-zone climate control and leather seats. In terms of safety, optional Active Smart Braking Technology can “see” stopped cars in front and slow you down before a collision.
Base price (incl. destination): $26,200 Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (184) Optional engine (hp): 2.2-litre DOHC I4, turbo-diesel (173) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) Weight (lb.): 1,440 shifter, or the optional six-speed automatic. The base GX model that lists for $26,200, including destination charges, comes with the usual power and comfort ingredients and push-button start. It also comes with a touch-screen display with Bluetooth networking and a rearview camera. The mid-level GS increases the content level with dual-zone climate control, power driver’s seat and a power moonroof, while the GT bulks up with standard navigation, premium Bose-brand sound system and 19-inch wheels (17-inchers are standard).

Rio
Sorento
The Rio, along with its close relative Hyundai Accent (Hyundai and Kia are both part of a Koreabased conglomerate) are tasked with providing well turned-out entry-level cars that are fun to drive. A big part of that fun comes from their nonclaustrophobic interiors that are enclosed in sheetmetal that’s stylish without being overly trendy. For the Rio sedan and 5-door models, that attention to detail extends to the dashboard layout that’s clearly presented and, due to the absence of hard plastic surfaces, is far richer looking than you would expect. The air conditioning, rear-window heat and ventilation toggle switches are a particularly nice touch. The standard 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque, which works out just fine in a light 1,130-kilogram vehicle. All Rios come with sixspeed manual transmissions or optional six-speed automatics. The base Rio LX sedan with the manual gearbox is somewhat light in the content department, while the mid-range LX+ includes air conditioning, plus a few more goodies. The EX adds cruise control, six-speaker audio system, soft-touch dash and a smattering of leather trim, while the top-end (and sportier) SX adds a “Steptronic” paddle shifters for the automatic transmission, 17-inch wheels (15-inchers
My, how Kia’s tall wagon has grown up over the past few years; the current edition has its style groove in full swing and its cabin chock-full of handy features. Following a design freshening, platform stiffing and power upgrading for 2014, the Sorento swaggers forth into 2015 as cool and competent as ever. And why not, since most competing three-row wagons require a lot more coin to seal the deal. The Sorento’s stout sub-frame supports a 191-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder powerplant and an optional 3.3-litre V6 producing 290-horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. With either engine a six-speed automatic with manual shift controls is the sole cog swapper. The all-wheel-drive system (available with either engine) is a full-time unit that constantly varies the torque to all four wheels and can direct power to the outer wheels in high-speed turning situations for added control (known as torque vectoring). Trim levels for 2015 are LX, EX as well as an SX model that includes ventilated soft leathercovered seats, exclusive 19-inch wheels (17- and 18-inch rims adorn lesser Sorentos), blind-spot detection, power tailgate and a premium 10-speaker audio system. The third-row seating is optional on the LX V6 and the SX (but not the EX), which also has a V6.
Base price (incl. destination): $15,600 (sedan), $16,000 (hatchback) Type: Four-door sedan/hatchback Engine (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4 (138) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 8.7/6.4 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; sidecurtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,130
are standard), leather interior, rain-sensing wipers and more. To add navigation, you need the SX. The 5-door’s trim levels match the sedan’s, except there is no LX+. To help save fuel dollars, the LX+ automatic-equipped car can be ordered with what Kia calls Idle Stop and Go (ISG). This feature shuts off the engine after the Rio comes to a complete stop, then instantly fires it up once the brake pedal is released.
Sedona
Soul
The Sedona is part of the minivan pack, but it really hasn’t been considered a major player. Perhaps all that could change for the 2015 model year. The style and proportions are right on the money and it’s devoid of superfluous curves and angles. The interior is as clean and uncluttered as the exterior and it abounds in handy touches. There’s room for up to eight people with the standard second-row bench seat, or seven with the optional second-row lounge chairs (with retractable leg rests) that can be positioned facing the front or the rear. Either mid-row arrangement slides fore and aft over a wide range and both the 60:40 split bench or chairs stow against the front seats to maximize cargo space. Mounted within the Sedona’s stiffer platform is a 3.3-litre V6 with 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. It’s pretty decent on fuel with a rating of 12.9 l/100 km in the city and 9.5 on the highway. Expect the seven trim levels to run a very broad range, from practical family transporter to full-on luxury machine, to compete with the Chrysler Town and Countrys of the world. Base equipment in the L includes seven-passenger seating, front and rear air conditioning, keyless remote and the usual power goodies. At the top is the SXL+ that nudges the $48,000 mark.
Few cars are ever considered groundbreaking, but that pretty much sums up the Soul. It’s the kind of vehicle that other automakers would give anything to have in their stable. Funky styling, a frugal price tag and fuel-saving ways have made it a winner. Even those lovable rodents in the Soul’s TV spots are half way to attaining icon status. For 2014, Kia upgraded and slightly enlarged the cabin for more front head and shoulder room and added a bit more rear legroom. In addition the dashboard was revised to accommodate an available 20-centimetre touch screen. The platform was made 29 per cent stiffer and accommodates a suspension that was reengineered for improved ride and handling. Outside, design details inspired by the Soulbased Trax’ster concept provided the basis for a front and rear facelift that makes the Soul much more appealing. The rear liftgate was made six centimetres wider and is now flanked by one of the coolest set of taillights ever installed on any vehicle. The entry-level LX Soul is equipped with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder that produces 130 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 2.0-litre four-cylinder in the EX and SX models delivers the same 164 horses and 151 pound-feet of torque. The 1.6 uses a six-speed manual transmission or an available six-speed automatic, while the 2.0 is only available with the automatic. Base Souls feature air conditioning, but not when the manual transmission is ordered,

Optional is a panorama-style sunroof and leather seats (heated and ventilated in front), along with a navigation system and premium Infinity-brand sound package. Load up a Soul and you’re looking a close to $30,000 and count an extra 200 bucks for any color other than black or white. Under the heading of Big News, the Soul EV arrives for 2015 with an electric motor rated at 109 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque and an EPA-rated range of about 150 kilometres before its lithium-ionpolymer batteries need recharging.

Fiat 500
Charger
The 500L is actually pretty close to perfect and second-year refinements should help even more. Physically, the Serbia-built 500L shares nothing with the 500 two-door, but it does exude a saucy character that’s unmistakably Fiat. Getting the 500 to a more practical state meant enlarging the platform. The tale of the tape reveals a gain of 70 centimetres in overall length, about 15 centimetres in width and height and slightly more than an extra 30 centimetres between the front and rear wheels, which translates into 42-per-cent greater interior volume. Fiat has also fashioned the rear seat to accommodate three people, for a total of five. Both the front and the 60:40 split rear seat can be folded when extra cargo space is called for. The standard powerplant is the turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder that’s used in the sporty 500 Abarth. The engine pumps out 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, which should keep the 500L from being pokey in traffic and during passing moves. A six-speed manual transmission is standard fare, while a six-speed automated manual (no clutch pedal) is optional, although for 2015, that’s only for the base model. A “real” six-speed automatic is now available to fight the criticisms about the former’s uncouth manners. The 500L comes in Pop, Sport, Trekking and Lounge models. Of the four, the off-road-emulating Trekking is the most visually stimulating with its unique
Although no longer a member of NASCAR’s various racing series, perhaps Dodge will put its latest Charger back into some stock-oriented division with the National Hot Rod Association. Why? Because the NHRA confirmed that the new 2015 Charger SRT8 Hellcat can do the standing quartermile drag race in 11 seconds flat and on street tires. Beyond the revised suspension, new wheels and more-aggressive body bits, the Hellcat’s most important part is under its hood. The “normal” 470-horsepower 6.4-litre Hemi is plenty good, but for the Hellcat it has been replaced by a 6.2-litre V8 that’s augmented by a big ol’ supercharger. Final tallies of 707 horsepower and 650 poundfeet of torque mean the Charger SRT8 is the most powerful factory-built sedan and the fastest as well, topping out at 204 mph (326 km-h). The large 20-inch wheels with 15.4-inch Brembo brake rotors means it stops nearly as well as it accelerates, doing the zero-to-100-mph-to-zero test in a supercar-rivaling sub-13-second time. Amazingly, the Hellcat uses the same eight-speed automatic as the other engines, although bulked up to handle twice the power. Those other engines carry over from before: the base 3.6-litre V6 still has 300 horsepower while the 370-horsepower 5.7-litre V8 comes as standard equipment in the Charger R/T. Both engines can be equipped with all-wheel-drive with its active transfer case with front-axle disconnect. To save fuel, the system

All-wheeldrive is not on the Trekking’s build sheet (you’ll have to wait for the all-new 500X’s arrival for the 2016 model year to get that feature), which pretty much limits where you’ll actually be “trekking” to. Other up-level equipment includes a panoramic glass sunroof, enlarged touch-screen controls for the audio, communications and navigation systems and a premium audio system.
unlocks the front wheels from the transfer case when they’re not needed and will automatically and seamlessly reconnect the front wheels when rear-tire slip is detected. The 5.7 also tries to temper the engine’s thirst for fuel by cutting off half the cylinders at idle and during low-load cruising. Aside from the Hellcat engine, nearly everything on the outside of that model has been changed or replaced, including the mean face with LED fog lamps, grille, hood and trunk.
Cherokee
Grand Cherokee Although now well into its fourth generation, the rugged five-passenger Grand Cherokee remains one of the most popular vehicles in its class. To keep it there, Jeep has come up with more than a few mid-life upgrades, both on and below the surface. While GC’s on- and off-road agility is largely attributable to the various suspension components it shares with the Mercedes-Benz ML-class tall wagon, the Jeep is tuned very differently. Under the hood it uses the corporate 290-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 while the 360-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 is optional. However, Jeep reintroduced a turbo-diesel engine in the GC for 2014. Although similar in displacement and output to the last diesel, the 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” (240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque) is sourced from Italian firm VM Motori rather than Mercedes-Benz. It’s the best choice for fuel economy, but part of those savings are attributable to the eight-speed automatic transmission, even in the high-powered SRT8. With a 470-horsepower 6.4-litre “Hemi”, 20-inch wheels with stickier road-biased tires, upgraded brakes, active suspension and active limited-slip differentials that are now re-tuned to send more power to the rear in enthusiastic driving, the SRT is one Jeep that’s as much fun through corners as it is from a

Jeep states this beast will reach 60 mph (96 km-h) in less than five seconds, which is made more repeatable thanks to standard launch control. Other more “normal” GC models – Laredo, Limited, Overland and Summit – are available in either rear- or four-wheel-drive. The Summit is a full-on luxury model that eclipses even the already spangly Overland and includes adaptive high-intensity-discharge headlights and dual exhaust tips, while inside everything is slathered in “Natura Plus” leather, open-pore wood trim, a faux-suede headliner and dual-pane moonroof.
The Jeep Cherokee brand returned like a flaming phoenix and proved such a positive boost for everyone involved. Although contentious with some critics, the Cherokee has some seriously modern sculpting going on. All by itself, the pinched and pointy-nose grille says plenty about the risk that Jeep’s designers took to create the Cherokee. Then there are the eyelet headlights that would have been impossible to imagine on any production car, Jeep or otherwise. The interior is also as modern as the outside. All but the most basic Cherokee models feature 12.7- or 21.3-centimetre touch-screens, depending on the trim level, that operate climate, communications and infotainment systems. Base models get a Fiat-designed 2.4-litre fourcylinder worth 184 horsepower. Optional is a 3.2-liter V6 that’s rated at 271 horses. It’s a subset of Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 that’s the base engine in the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Ram pickup. In the Cherokee’s case, ordering the V6 provides a 2,045-kilogram towing capacity. Both engines are connected to nine-speed automatic transmissions, which was the first use of that gear changer in any Chrysler product. Front-wheel-drive is the norm, but buyers can choose from three different four-wheel-drive setups, depending on trim level. Active Drive I, optional in the Sport, North and Limited editions, is a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically

Weight (kg): 1,640 whenever tire slip is detected. Active Drive II, also available in North and Limited, comes with a twospeed transfer case and is designed for off-road use with either the four- or six-cylinder engines. But for rock crawling and boulder hopping, Active Drive Lock, as the name implies, locks up the rear differential in low range. This system is standard in the Cherokee Trailhawk, which is a “Trail Rated” rig outfitted with an off-road suspension (increases ride height by an inch), skid plates, unique alloy wheels with all-terrain rubber, blacked-out trim and a full-size spare tire. All 4x4 systems include Selec-Terrain traction control with five different settings.

ATS
Cruze
While Cadillac’s entry-level ATS has earned critical praise for its no-bull approach to performance, it has taken a couple years to introduce its first variant: a coupe. The new two-door shares the same wheelbase with the sedan, but obviously gets its own sheet-metal from the firewall back. And while the sedan and coupe do share a new grille with the revised Cadillac badge, the Coupe’s is slightly more aggressive. The Coupe also uses a wider track (the space between the left and right wheels) and unique fenders to hide the standard 18-inch wheels (versus 17-inchers on the sedan.) Both are smaller than the CTS, but where the ATS family really excels is its light 1,550-kilogram curb weight. Part of the dieting process involves an aluminum hood, natural-fibre door panels and magnesium enginemount brackets. Although the ATS is available with a relatively potent 321-horsepower 3.6-litreV6, Cadillac is making available two additional four-cylinder offerings. Base sedans get a 202-horsepower 2.5-litre unit, while a 2.0-litre turbocharged fourcylinder is standard in the coupe and optional on sedan. The turbo’s 272 horsepower is unaltered, but it now boasts 295 pound-feet of torque (versus 260 before), trumping similarly sized turbo-fours employed in the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series. All powerplants are mated to six-speed automatic
The Cruze gets a small facelift for 2015 with a more prominent set of intakes and a slightly revised grille. And, like virtually every other vehicle on the market, LED running lights are standard on the higher trim levels. Mechanically, things remain unchanged. The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine offers more horsepower and torque – 151 and 264, respectively – than either of the gasoline engines, and torque can reach 280 pound-feet for brief bursts of flatout acceleration. While its zero-to-60-mph time in the mid-eight-second range will be enjoyed by some, everyone will appreciate the 700-plus-mile cruising range, thanks to a headline 5.1 l/100 km highway fuel-economy figure. The diesel only comes one way: starting at $26,700 (including destination) and with equipment equivalent to a 2LT trim in regular Cruzes. That means niceties like leather seats, heated front seats, a nicer instrument cluster with chrome trim, 17-inch wheels, rear spoiler and more. A seveninch colour touch-screen stereo with navigation and USB port can be had in virtually every model, while driver convenience packages on most trims include a number of useful options such as power seats, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, rear-vision camera and more. The Cruze’s standard and optional powerplants are diminutive but more than adequate. The base car is equipped with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder that
Base price (incl. destination): $36,500 (2014) Type: Four-door sedan Base Engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (202) Optional engines (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (272); 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (321) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 11.1/7.2 (2.5) Safety: Front airbags; front/rear side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front knee airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,550 transmissions (required when adding the optional all-wheel-drive on all but base four-bangers), but in keeping with its performance nature the turbo engine is available with a six-speed manual. Regardless of drivetrain, the ATS’s sporty demeanor can be amplified with an optional suspension package that includes larger Brembo-brand brakes and magnetic ride control that constantly adjusts the suspension characteristics according to road conditions and driver input.
Sierra
Encore
Although perhaps not quite the dramatic makeover that some General Motors fans expected, the Sierra/Silverado full-size pickups have nonetheless gained plenty of respect. More basic GMC models accentuate the “Professional Grade” tag and the pitch is directed at buyers who rely on their pickups to earn a living. At the opposite end of the scale is the Sierra Denali sub-brand that places a much higher value on coddling content. The entire front end, including grille, headlights, bumper and in-your-face GMC logo, are more massive than before and in total make a bolder statement. Of course as you scale the trim-level ladder the appointments become more luxurious and the cabin resembles something approaching a highend limo, especially in the four-door crew-cab models. Improvements in aerodynamics, insulation and weather sealing help shut out intrusive noises. Just as a greater use of aluminum in fabricating various body panels and suspension parts has kept the Sierra’s weight in check, the three new engines also benefit. All use aluminum cylinder blocks and direct injection, whereby fuel is forcefed into the cylinders under high pressure. There’s also variable valve timing for improved low- and high-speed performance, while half the cylinders in V8 engines will automatically shut down in steady-state cruise conditions to save fuel. The V6 engine also runs on four cylinders in such situations. The base 4.3-litre V6 might have
How many people scoffed when Buick proclaimed that its previous focus on size-size-size was long-gone? Plenty, at least until it introduced the Encore. Just don’t let its small dimensions fool you: it is a uniquely practical tall wagon that can hold lots of gear and can hold its own in the horsepower and fuel-consumption departments. Also adding to its versatility is available all-wheel-drive. From its oval-shaped “waterfall” grille to the tip of its two-tone bumper, the Encore features a neat blend of stylish design cues with just a hint of ruggedness. It actually uses the same platform as Buick’s Verano sedan and Chevrolet’s Cruze and Sonic small cars, however it’s about 18-centimetres longer and 12-centimetres taller than the Sonic hatchback, which gives it far more cargo room with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The front passenger seat folds flat so that stuff like ladders and building materials can be more easily accommodated. The cabin is also on the receiving end of one of Buick’s more fashionable interiors. It has active noise cancellation that uses ceiling-mounted microphones to detect engine sounds, then a special computer dishes out counteracting sound waves through the audio system. It’s pleasantly surprising that Buick would select the Encore as its initial recipient of this tech. Standard is a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque.
Base price (incl. destination): $28,200 Type: Full-size pickup Base engine (hp): 4.3-litre OHV V6 (285) Optional engines (hp): 5.3-litre OHV V8 (355); 6.2-litre OHV V8 (420) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 13.4/9.9 (4.3) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; sidecurtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. Weight (kg.): 2,240 the same displacement as before, but it now makes 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. The old iron 4.3 was good for just 195/260 pound-feet. V8 choices consist of a new 5.3-litre unit with 355 horses and 383 pound-feet, up from 315/335, and a 6.2-litre piece rated at 420/450. The larger of the V8s now gets an eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s standard in the fancier Sierra Denali, not to mention a rather substantial list of content that includes unique 20-inch chrome and wood and leather innards, along with standard magnetic ride control for 2015.
Base price (incl. destination): $17,700 Type: Four-door sedan Base Engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (138) Optional engine (hp): 1.4-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (138); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbodiesel (148) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 9.4/6.6 (1.8, MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; front-knee airbags; rear-side airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,400 produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. Move up to the LT and LTZ you’ll get and a smaller -- less is more here, apparently -- 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that’s also rated at 138 horsepower but with 25 pound-feet more torque. The 1.8 offers a choice of a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic, while the 1.4 turbo is only available with the automatic.
Base price (incl. destination): $28,500 Type: Four-door wagon sub-compact tall wagon Engine (hp): 1.4-litre DOHC I4 (138) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 9.5/7.2 Safety: Front airbags; front/rear side-impact airbags; front knee airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg.): 1,450
Base cars arrive with the usual air/cruise/tilt/ power accessories plus 10 airbags and standard 18-inch wheels. From that point, depending on the designation, you select dual-zone climate control, power sunroof, navigation system, leather-trimmed interior, power-adjustable driver’s chair, heated steering wheel, premium Bose sound system, to name just a few. The only new feature for 2015 is a standard OnStar-based 4G LTE mobile wi-fi hot spot, which means all your wireless devices have Internet connectivity.
