WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Written by Dr. Shannon Sarrasin, ND

As many as 7 out of 10 Canadians do not meet the suggested minimum vitamin D level for optimal health. Vitamin D is produced in the body in response to sunlight, and during the winter months we are at risk for vitamin D deficiency.

Traditional Medicinals

Select Wellness Teas Founded 38 years ago to provide affordable traditional herbal self care. Today they are the largest organic, fair trade certified, and medicinal tea brand in the US. All of their ingredients are plant-based (no synthetic, petroleum-based, or animal-derived components) and suitable for use by those seeking a healthy, natural lifestyle, including vegetarians and, in most cases, vegans as well. In 2008 Traditional Medicinals installed 1450 solar panels at their manufacuturing facility to make them a clean, green, sun powered tea making machine. On average the solar panels provide about 70% of their total electricity needs and they offset the rest with wind-energy credits. Pair this with their low impact packaging and an integrated recyclings plan helps leave them a light foot print. Their tea cartons are made from 100% recycled paper board board (at least 55% verified post-postconsumer waste) and shipped in 100% recycled post consumer waste shipping cases.

The tea bags are made from 100% unbleached hemp fiber, attached to a 100% cotton string, and the tea tags are made from recycled paper.

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to numerous health conditions, and maintaining optimal vitamin D levels is an important preventative approach. In Canada, supplementation is largely necessary during the winter months, and testing is helpful to determine optimal individual dose recommendations.

VITAMIN D AND HEALTH

Vitamin D acts like a hormone in the body. It impacts many tissues including the heart, brain, reproductive organs and immune system. It has the ability to influence cellular expression of more than 200 genes! This is important in preventing cancer, inflammation and chronic immune conditions. It also plays a critical role in calcium absorption and metabolism for bone health. Low vitamin D has been associated with the following conditions: • Osteoporosis, rickets • Poor immune function • Autoimmune disease • Multiple sclerosis • Cancers • Heart disease and hypertension • Diabetes (Type I and Type II) • Depression and anxiety • Cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease • Pregnancy: Gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia

GETTING YOUR VITAMIN D

Vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin because our body produces it in response to sunlight. In general, 15 minutes of direct sunlight is required at least twice per week in order to maintain levels. Darker skinned individuals may require up to six times this amount of sun. Using sunscreen can reduce production by 99%. The best natural food source of vitamin D includes fatty fish and cod liver oil. Other sources include beef liver, egg yolks, fortified dairy and infant formula.

CANADIANS ARE AT RISK FOR DEFICIENCY

Due to Canada’s northern latitude, Canadians do not produce enough vitamin D during the winter months. Other individuals that are at increased risk for deficiency include breastfed babies, older adults, people with dark skin, and individuals with impaired intestinal absorption or obesity.

SUPPLEMENTATION

Supplementation is recommended during the winter months. Most supplements contain vitamin D3 which is superior to D2 for long term dosing. Different organizations recommend different daily intake of vitamin D. Health Canada is conservative with a RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) of 600 IU for adults (400 IU for babies). The Canadian Cancer Society recommends daily supplementation of 1,000 IU per day. There is research that suggests that these recommendations may be too low. The National Institutes for Health sets a tolerable upper intake level for adults at 4,000 IU. This is important to note as too much vitamin D can be harmful. Dosing above this level may be necessary for some individuals to get their vitamin D levels into optimal range, but should be guided by testing. For most adults living in Victoria I recommend 2,000 – 4,000 IU of vitamin D per day. Vitamin D is fat soluble and should be taken with food. Given that there are many factors that affect vitamin D production and absorption, testing is valuable to determine what your individual dose should be.

GET YOUR VITAMIN D LEVEL TESTED

Naturopathic Doctors offer testing for vitamin D. Serum concentration of 25(OH) vitamin D is the best indicator of vitamin D status. I recommend testing in March or April when vitamin D levels are typically at their lowest. The Canadian average 25(OH) vitamin D is 67.7 nmol/L. I like to see people in the range of 100-150 nmol/L.

conic Canadian rocker Burton Cummings still remembers being a gobsmacked kid. In fact, he remembers most everything about his storied life and career. From growing up in frigid Winnipeg, to a Los Angeles home with a wall full of gold records, Cummings plucks memories from his 67 years on the planet as easily as his fans pick favourite tunes from his long playlist of hits. It’s his connection to the music and the people who love it that drives him to continue touring and continue expanding his repertoire of talents. Cummings launches the Your Backyard tour in Victoria March 8 at the Alix Goolden Performance Hall. The tour will take Cummings and his band around the province, including a performance in Duncan March 9, the Okanagan, Lower Mainland and into parts of the US.

Bigger isn’t better

“We’re doing almost like a mini tour of British Columbia,” he says. “We were just in Nanaimo … people were just overwhelming as far as the response and I started realizing, I’ve been on the radio for over 40 years now and it’s a bit of event anywhere I can go, show up and sound like the records – the people just love it.” He hasn’t been to many small towns recently and decided fans shouldn’t have to travel to take in a good show. “I don’t have to be in stadium to be happy, I love the theatres. We’ve been doing a lot of theatres lately, also casinos. Suddenly now, in 2015, there’s casinos on every corner so if you’re lucky enough to have a batch of hit records from a certain

They’re followers or cyber friends – and it’s cool. We get into some real-time conversations late at night. Before the Internet we didn’t have any of this. I remember the days, I mean hell, we were riding pretty high in the early ‘70s in the Guess Who days, and we had a fan club, sure, but here’s the difference: back then somebody might write in … and maybe in two-and-ahalf or three weeks, if they were lucky, they might get something mailed back to them with a fake signature on it that some secretary would sit and sign pictures. “The difference now is, I’ll put up something at 2 in the morning and by 2:03am I’ve got responses from Germany and New Zealand – that’s what I like about it, how it’s really shrunk the globe for us.”

Live and lovin’ it

SPEAK TO ME

Twelve of Canada’s hottest spoken word artists hit Victoria with a weeklong celebration of poetry during the fifth annual Victoria Spoken Word Festival. The Victoria Spoken Word Festival runs Feb. 23 to March 1 and features spoken word on the cutting edge. These all-stars poets will be featured in showcases and events, as well as collaborations with dancers, improvisers – even brewers. “We’re pulling out all the stops this year,” says festival director Missie Peters.“We’re calling them all-stars for a reason – most of the poets in the ensemble have national titles under their belts. I’m excited to see what they will create together for the Festival Finale.” The Festival Finale show is the culmination of the festival, and features a show that the All-Star Ensemble write and create in one day, plus a performance by Poet of Honour Brendan McLeod of The Fugitives. In addition to being a national slam champion, McLeod is a novelist, a playwright and a musician. The Victoria Spoken Word Festival is happening in partnership with Intrepid Theatre. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students. Festival passes are $45. victoriaspokenwordfestival.com.

Contrary to some performers. Cummings loves fans who take photos at his shows. “I encourage people to take all the photos you want and send them to us, we put them up. I’m getting great reaction from fans after the shows, they send us the pictures and it makes my (web) page more interesting.” He has one goal during his live shows and that’s “knock ‘em out.” “(We) play all the famous songs people came to hear. I’m a stickler for vocals. I have a band where everybody sings besides me so that layer of vocals is always there. We really do try and sound like the records. That word spreads and I’ve noticed the crowds are getting bigger and people are loving it – so whatever we’re doing, I think we’re doing something right.” His shows border on two hours and feature his best-known songs. “I’ve been lucky, touch wood. My goodness, I was a smoker for, I don’t even know how long. I smoked for 40 years, maybe 45 years. I finally quit that about four or five years ago. It’s not that my voice cleared up so much, as it became easier for me without tobacco. … I’m singing for that two hours, so I have to really pace myself,” Cummings says. “Put it this way, I have a new set of heroes: Tony Bennett, Steve Miller, Gordon Lightfoot. Steve Miller, I met years ago at a California State Fair, the guy’s 72 and he came out and 13 or 14 year old kids were singing along and mouthing every word – that’s a rocker. He sounded great.”

Honouring the music

“I go to other people’s shows and if it moves me enough it’s an amazing emotional experience. If I’m at the centre of that and I can do that for audiences, then I’ve always tried to honour the music,” Cummings says. “Every time I play that little piano intro to These Eyes a big cheer goes up. All I gotta do is, ‘bom, bom, duh, duh, duh, de, duh, duh,’” he sings, then mimics the sound of a crowd. “You know when you’re a little kid you dream of that. You dream about having one of those.” Cummings has about 20 of those famous tunes. “We start up No Time and you hear that guitar riff and there’s a big cheer. American Woman, all you’ve gotta hear is ‘dun, dun, dunna, dunna, dun, da, dun,’” he sings. “A big cheer goes up. … There’s a song of mine Break It To Them Gently, there’s a little guitar riff that starts it and once you hear ‘dow, dow,’ I hear the cheer go up, so I, I don’t try and hide the fact at all, that I really like that. I like being able to elicit that emotion from people and I think that’s why the music should be really honoured.” In his show, he sticks to the classics, hits he wrote more than 30 years ago. “(I don’t play) so much new stuff of mine. I’ve got too many hit records to do that. Once in a while we’ll do a tribute to Buddy Holly (or) J.J. Cale, or something by somebody else, maybe Marvin Gaye, somebody that I really like to sing their stuff, but I’m really past the point of shoving new stuff down people’s throats. I know why people are coming to our shows and I don’t mind singing the songs they came to hear. Albert Flasher gets them stomping their feet, we do My Own Way To Rock, people are up dancing, Star Baby, Clap for the Wolfman everybody’s clapping and singing along. The famous songs are fun to do and it’s fun to have that recognition factor and everybody digging it along with you.” mondaymag.com MONDAY MAGAZINE MARCH 2015

Socks. My wife says to write about socks. I have been sitting at my computer pouting like a little child for hours because I can’t think of what to write for my column that I am 95 per cent sure nobody reads. She says that writing about something mundane is the best way to get over writer’s block. I would like to say that she is wrong but, other than the time she was foolish enough to marry me, she hasn’t been wrong. In fact, she reads all of my columns before they go to the editor. She doesn’t edit them so much as reads and says … “are you sure you wanna say that?” And then I reread it and most of the time I agree with her. wat’s up? Barbies in bloom Spring has sprung. Flowers are everywhere. But in Fairfield there’s a branch that’s sprouted an arm. It’s muscular, molded from plastic, and once belonged to an action figure. Ida Wellwood found it on the bush near her front gate, after her neighbour attached it there in an attempt to be silly. She smiles and laughs while remembering the moment. “It was a delightful discovery,” she says. The experience was so delightful, she decided to grow the branch with an arm into a tree full of dolls. And that’s what made the videographer and I gasp in unison as we were driving towards Ida’s front yard. After hours of searching for a suitable story for the end of the six o’clock news, we saw dozens of Barbie dolls hanging from a tree like acrobats at a circus. Ida’s doll tree began with eight Barbies that once belonged to her friend’s daughter. Dolls donated because of a miscommunication. Dolls the daughter wanted her mom to keep. A mistake that nobody realized until Ida used her artistic talents to transform them. Now the tree’s blooming Barbies have sprouted wings and wear hats made from tea-spoon strainers. There’s even one that’s emerging from the mouth of an alligator. Ida did damage control by sending photographs of them to the daughter. “So she knew people were delighted to see them. And she forgave her mother

for giving them to me.” Those original ADAM SAWATSKY eight dolls @CTVNewsAdam inspired other people to donate their Barbies. Now Ida’s front yard is full of them. “It’s a creation of the absurd because people like to stop and look at things that are absurd.” The videographer agrees. He smiles while spending way longer than usual capturing the intricacies of what Ida’s created. During that time, the artist reveals how her delightful childhood was undermined by a horrible, decade-long relationship. A relationship she’s grateful ended while she was still young enough to learn how to live again. When I ask how one keeps a broken spirit from dying, she says laughter: “By making someone laugh. And you can, even if they cry, they still laugh.” Laughter is just one of the many responses from people passing by that keeps the Barbie tree blooming. “There’s no big message,” Ida says. “I’ve seen people (see the tree) and write down what does it mean? And it doesn’t mean anything. It’s just to delight.” Adam Sawatsky is co-host of CTV News Vancouver Island at Five. On weekends, he hosts ‘Eye on the Arts’ on CFAX 1070.

Aerobic aware: have fun, get fit MARGARET BOYES arts@mondaymag.com

I

f you take aerobics classes, you probably think of them as enjoyable exercise, but caution will save you from serious injuries. In 1984, Kaye Barnett was in an aerobics class on the Hawaiian island of Waikoloa. It was very warm, she says. ”We were going fast and furious. My blood was pumping quickly and the instructor kept shouting, ‘You can do it!’ Then she had us cool down very quickly. I bent down to touch my toes then felt something explode in my head.” When Barnett stood up she had a migraine headache and was blind in her right eye. Doctors did a cerebral arteriogram which showed the blood vessels behind the eye were constricted causing the blindness. After taking medication to dilate the blood vessels, her headache disappeared and sight returned. She didn’t have permanent aftereffects but a neurologist told Barnett she should never do aerobics again.“Now I monitor my heart rate when doing

any kind of aerobic activity.” Most aerobic injuries are not as serious as Barnett’s. Acute injuries, often to the ankle or knee, can result from a fall or twist. Overuse injuries develop slowly, from doing too much, too soon without recovery time. Shin pain, foot and knee overuse injuries are most common. And back injuries can result from or be made worse by aerobics. The good news is these can be prevented. Today, most people think of aerobics as classes which combine dance with body movements such as skipping, walking running, jumping and toe-touching. These tone muscles and develop cardiovascular fitness. People usually exercise to music in classes of different levels of intensity led by certified instructors.

The health benefits of aerobics classes include weight loss or management, conditioning the heart and lungs by increasing available oxygen and by helping the heart use oxygen efficiently. They can also help manage stress and lower the risk of hypertension and stroke. Before you start aerobic exercise, you should have a heart and lung assessment if you’re over 40. And have a musculoskeletal assessment by a sports medicine professional if you’ve been injured.

Preventing Injuries

Dr. Richard Backus, a sports and exercise medicine doctor at Rebalance MD, says warming up and cooling down are essential for preventing injuries. “Choose a type of aerobics suitable

for your fitness level,” he says. “Cross training is good though most instructors won’t advise this. Try different types of classes that give you adequate recovery time.” Jenny Lehmann, a kinesiologist from Parkway Physiotherapy, says you should start doing aerobics with a manageable exercise program. “People often aren’t aware of posture and form. Injuries may be from overload, and not correcting movement patterns and adjusting imbalances before starting. You often don’t change these until you feel pain.” She believes classes should be advertised as to age groups and abilities. “Seniors may have osteoarthritis and are more likely to injure joints. People with chronic injuries should continue rehabilitation until after their pain is gone.” Crystal Pool aerobics instructor Amanda Gagh has taught students of all ages for 30 years. “Personality types more than sports cause injuries,” says Gagh. “Some people are competitive and don’t listen to their bodies.” Intense physical activity has been FOLLOW US:

Stretch your imagination Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice that denotes a variety of schools, practices and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism (including Vajrayana and Tibetan Buddhism) and Jainism. Yoga balances the energy of aerobics with calm and inner control. Dancers and figure skaters who do yoga are more graceful, have more fluid movements, are better able to keep up and are more flexible. Many studies have tried to determine the effectiveness of yoga as a complementary intervention for cancer, schizophrenia, asthma, and heart disease. The results of these studies have been mixed with cancer studies suggesting none to unclear effectiveness, and others suggesting yoga may reduce risk factors and aid in a patient’s psychological healing process.

Only people predisposed to heart conditions are likely to get heart attacks after aerobics, says Lehmann. “Let your heart rate get back to resting levels before continuing other activities.” According to Gagh, you can have a

Forget the fads – learn to eat healthy available that taste great and get the job done. Take a daily probiotic supplement. Have you ever struggled with less than optimal gastrointestinal issues? You know: diarrhea, gas, bloating, constipation, nausea, stomach cramps etc. If the answer is “Yes” then chances are you have an imbalance in your gut flora. Things like not eating enough fruit, vegetables and/or dietary fiber; food intolerance (such as a gluten or dairy); taking antibiotics; a stressful lifestyle, which can include stress from relationships, finances, travel – even intense regular exercise; eating a diet high in acid-forming foods such as processed foods, sugar, white flour, artificial sweeteners, etc. can make your intestines less than happy. Check out your daily protein intake. Choose a few days and journal your food choices and really see how much of this vital macronutrient you are ingesting. For most, it’s not enough to provide the needed building blocks the body needs for muscle repair and growth, immune function, hormone production, as well as blood and neurotransmitter production. Fish oil is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and most folks don’t get nearly enough. The average North American gets 1/16 to 1/20 of the recommended daily requirement. Omega-3’s are vital for cardiovascular health, nervous system function and brain development, immune health and fat loss. I’ve worked with individuals who have struggled with depression, anxiety, stress and chronic inflammation and Omega 3’s are a definite must. Look for a supplement that provides a minimum of two to three grams of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) combined. tein in your diet your body breaks down its own muscle tissue to get the protein it needs to survive. Which means you lose muscle mass, joint support and ultimately, a decreased metabolism. That’s not great if being, or staying, lean is one of your goals. To maintain the necessary body functions that protein is responsible for, we need about one gram per pound of lean body mass per day. For most women, this averages about *80 to 100 grams per day and for most men it’s about *120 to 160 grams per day. For very active individuals, I suggest *one gram of protein for each pound

of body weight per day. Consider a daily multivitamin. Multivitamin supplements have been endorsed by the most respected medical organizations in the world for their ability to help reduce the risk of nutrient deficiency. Vitamins and minerals are essential for normal body functions and disease prevention. It’s rare to get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs from our food intake alone. The elderly, athletes, individuals struggling with lower income (and unable to afford healthy food options), and those restricting calories to lose weight are often most in need of nutritional support from a multivitamin. If you choose to add a vitamin/ mineral supplement, look for one providing nutrients derived from whole foods. Make sure this includes natural forms of vitamin E rather than the synthetic versions. Vitamin A should come from precursors like carotenoids and not preformed retinoids. a Société Francophone de Victoria began around a kitchen table in 1941, now it is a home away from home for some 300 French speaking individuals in Greater Victoria. Some 30,000 people in the region say they speak French regularly. “There are close to 11,000 children,” says Francophone Society president Pauline Gobeil. “More than 20 per cent of children are in French Immersion in Victoria.” A not-for-profit organization that promotes, represents and advocates for the French language and francophone culture in Greater Victoria, the society offers employment preparation, job search assistance and serves as a gathering place for the Francophone community. It also coordinates French-language events, including the popular French Fest March 5 to 8. “Initially when the festival started it was mainly for Quebec French culture, as it went on – it’s in its 18th edition now – there has been more immigration and migration, so we’ve brought in performers from Africa,” says Gobeil. The four-day festival attracts some 7,000 people to a variety of events including an opening night concert featuring the traditional Québécois music of Le Bal à l’huile, performing songs from their newest album T’en souviens-tu? at the Victoria Event Centre, 1415 Broad St, on March 5 at 7:30pm. “It’s something we share with everybody, not only French speaking, it’s open,” says past president Christian Francey. “It’s something we want to give everybody through our culture and our language. … we party together.” March 7 and 8 Centennial Square will be a hive of activity with performances by Victoria artist Sam Weber; African drum and dance project Kikeyambay; Wontanara Drum & Dance; the Malahat Swing Cats; Mimosa, a jazz-French quartet with Brazilian influence and trumpeter and composer Olivier Clements. Free family activities will also be available including traditional French foods; Francophone artisans and information; a kids zone with a bouncy castle, balloons, face painting and more. March 8 the celebration continues with a traditional Sugar Shack brunch at Ambrosia at 10:30am. The brunch offers a great opportunity to discover traditional French Canadian maple syrup-based dishes. In honour of International Women’s day, three women who have been committed to the community for many years, will be presented with awards on stage at Centennial Square. “The French culture is not just from one county,” says Gobeil. “It’s very rich. What we have in common is our language but we all have different cultures we attach to it – but we all like getting together and having a good time.” Tickets for Le Bal à l’huile and the brunch are on sale at the SFV office: 200-535 Yates Street - 250 388-7350. aniel Lanois is one of the most successful Canadians in the music industry. Some know him from his solo albums and film scores, including the 1996 Billy Bob Thornton hit Sling Blade, but Lanois is also the man behind some of the most influential albums of the last 40 years. “I started recording in the basement of my mother’s house when I was 12,” says Lanois, on the phone from his home in Los Angeles. “I just bought a tape recorder and I started recording my friends. Then I kept buying more equipment, and more equipment until I got very good at it. By 17 or 18, I was the best in the country.” Lanois, now 63, say’s he’s not boasting, just that he applied his talent to a medium that interested him deeply. “I liked to help people with their recordings. His work with Martha and the Muffins, which included Lanois’ sister Jocelyne, Toronto’s avant garde Time Twins and Mama Quilla, which evolved into the Parachute Club, “was a conduit to the lesbian bands of the ’70s,” he says. The Time Twins played Lanois’ recording of them for Eno, of Roxy Music fame, who was fascinated by his work. “Brian Eno called me the next day – that started this whole thing. I did seven ambient albums with Brian Eno and those records got noticed by U2.” Eno’s groundbreaking ambient sound and innovative production techniques meshed well with Lanois’ and the two collaborated on several recordings, including several U2 albums. Lanois’ latest release as a performer, Juno nominated Flesh and Machine, harkens back to Eno’s ambient style. “Flesh and Machine revisits those values, if not those specific sounds,” says Lanois. “Forest City is the most reminiscent. I’m still interested in textural work that has the capacity to raise the spirit. To change your life, even for a moment – that appeals to me.” His website includes several films made to go along with tracks from Flesh and Machine. “We thought we’d try something. It was a lot of fun to invite filmmakers to submit films. We showed them at various film festivals. Contrary to popular belief we don’t show them on tour – we’ve abandoned all that now.” What he hasn’t abandoned is his desire to share music on a personal level. “It’s not about entertainment, it’s about the power of soul. … Something that will stop you in your tracks. Something that will provide you with a night of Bohemia. You can embrace the stillness and let your imagination be your magic carpet. Take your face out of the computer and look at the sky … or take drugs and look at the ceiling of your apartment, or have great sex with somebody you care about. Be an animal again – wouldn’t that be lovely?” To see the Flesh and Machine videos go to daniellanois.com.

Nolan Riding’s David Lynch, left and Patick Nolan, right, jump in for the catch when Monday editor Laura Lavin misses the mark.

“You know, like when you were a kid and you rode with no hands,” he calls as he rolls down the trail and turns his bike neatly, hands behind his back. No. That’s not me, never will be. On my first pass I am moving too slowly and turn the wheel too far. Before I know it, the ground is rushing up on my right side and instinctively I throw my right hand out. Luckily, Nolan’s fall lesson comes quickly to my rescue and I tuck my arm in and roll onto my back. I’m quickly back on my feet with Nolan and Lynch at my side making sure I’m OK. My fall was “perfectly executed” says Lynch. Unfortunately, my left thumb is telling me something went wrong somewhere else. I decide to push on, eager to learn more. But first, to defeat that right hand turn. My next go at it is successful and after a few more passes I’m completely comfortable turning in both directions. The next challenge is lifting the front wheel. This manoeuvre is not normally undertaken when one is new to the sport, but I’m game to try and see how it goes. Ready posi-

tion, chicken wings out … I try to turn my body into one giant spring – bike and all. After a few tries and a generous amount of bouncing about – which no one laughs at, thankfully. Nolan says this time, instead of constant springing up and down, do it once. “Now,” he says. I pedal, position and lift. I can actually feel the front tire leave the ground. Success! He and Lynch are generous with their praise. I feel like I just won the lottery. Small victories are sometimes all it takes to make one forget the falls. We end the lesson with a well-spotted attempt to lift the wheel over a log that is fixed to the ground. The two men do a great job of catching me as I miss the mark by a hair. Nolan tells me I did a good job and have “natural athletic ability.” I don’t know about that, but I do know it feels great to take on a new challenge and learn a new skill. Nolan Riding offers several options for new riders, both young and not so young. Check it out at nolanriding.com.

Most of the menu is pulled out of North Saanich soil in the morning and on your plate by noon. “Farm to table is such a popular catch phrase these days,” says Meat and Bread Chef Carmen Ingham. “People love to say it but … this place walks the walk.” Ingham grew up in the kitchen beside his mother, enjoying food from his Italian heritage. “My mom is Italian, but she was born here. h, the art of rice and water. It’s not just for sushi anymore. I was in the mood for all things Japanese and thoughts turned to Sake, not just warm or cold, but rather Sake in cocktails. As cocktails are moving to lighter more aperitif style, Sake cocktails are trending in London, NY, LA and other cities outside of Japan. Now, of course, serious Sake creators and drinkers will turn up their noses but cocktail lovers certainly won’t. Thinking that all Japanese restaurants would, of course, make Sake cocktails turned out to be very wrong headed on my part when I discovered that Azuma Sushi made only two – the, by now, classic Sakitini and the Manhattan East. Azuma Sushi though, doesn’t forget its roots and offers instead cocktails with green tea, yuzu, and lemongrass. On Mondays, the cocktails are $5. And bless their hearts the nigiri is just .99 and set atop beautifully done rice that’s not too heavy on the vinegar. First up was a GunPowder Old Fashioned with your choice of Gin or Bourbon with Silk Road Gunpowder Tea and a lemongrass stir stick, which unfortunately didn’t make it into the glass. I went for the bourbon and afterwards thought gin might have been more appropriate for the food but the words Old Fashioned and gin just seemed so wrong in the moment. The big, smoky flavour of the gunpowder tea surprisingly didn’t come through as expected. Next was the Azuma Saketini, a generously proportioned Sake forward cocktail that was refreshing and a lovely food match. I think an olive is an odd choice and would have preferred a lightly pickled onion but, quibbles. I look forward to a return trip, Neo Tokyo Yuzu Sour anyone?

looring is an expensive decision in any renovation or new build. It’s good to have all your homework done, so here are a very few quick tips. Solid hardwood floors are generally three-quarters of an inch of thick-cut solid wood. Wood naturally contracts and expands, so a solid wood floor must be nailed or screwed down to a plywood subfloor. It can be resanded and stained many times over its lifetime and you can expect your hardwood floor to last 40 years or more. Engineered floors are made from layered wood, typically about one-quarter of an inch thick laminated to a plywood sub base. It is a very stable construction which won’t expand and contract. The great thing about engineered floors is they can be glued down, so they can go in basements or condos, basically installed over cement. They too, can be resanded and stained a few times, based on their wood thickness. The Finishing Store at 780 Topaz Ave., has a fabulous selection of hardwood and engineered flooring. They have a huge selection of Canadian manufactured woods, which of course is always my first choice. You can see different installation displays and choose from a huge variety of species and stain colours. Their staff specializes in wood, so you can get trusted answers to your questions. Edgar and Miner at 2508 Bridge St., is a 40 year old Victoria business which also has a good size display of wood floor products. They are a full service flooring store, carrying lines from Canada as well as Canadian companies that manufacture overseas to keep costs in check. Many of their staff have more than 25 years in the flooring business, so they too, have a wealth of knowledge to draw from. Remember, you’re always best to visit a flooring professional to get all the important information needed before making a decision. lue jeans were originally designed for cowboys and miners, it wasn’t until the 1950s that jeans became popular in American culture as a protest against conformity. Many people still classify denim as being strictly for casual wear and consider it to be taboo when dressing to impress. Wearing denim on casual Friday or out for cocktails after work can be done, especially if you wear the right wash and know how to coordinate your denim to look casual chic. There are numerous ways you can dress up a classic pair of jeans for both men and women. When it comes to dressing up denim, I always go for a darker wash, I find light-wash and distressed jeans always look more casual. A pair of dark, fitted men’s jeans is the equivalent to a pair of chinos in terms of versatility for menswear. Every man should own a khaki pair of chinos and a dark-wash blue jeans to wear on casual Fridays or to dress down a shirt and tie. Depending on the occasion, there are several ways you can dress up a pair of men’s jeans, the first way is to pair them with a collared dress shirt, tie and a classic blazer. If you accessorize this look with a belt, pocket square and a pair of loafers, you will look effortlessly dressed up without being pretentious. If it feels too dressy with a blazer, you can always swap the blazer for denim jacket or skip the tie. Either way, jeans don’t have to be worn strictly on Sunday afternoons with a T-shirt and sneakers. Dressing up women’s denim can be

Stick to dark-wash and a slim fit, or a fitted trouser style, depending on your body type. The key is to get a pair of jeans that fits your body. It is really hard to find the perfect pair of jeans and when I find a style and cut that fits my body type, I tend to buy multiple pairs and washes in the same style. When I want to dress up my jeans I usually opt for a colourful printed silk blouse paired with a bold statement necklace. If I want to take my look up to the next level, I’ll complete it with a fitted blazer or cardigan on top. You can wear a T-shirt with jeans if you accessorize properly by adding a necklace, statement scarf and blazer. The next time you’re thinking twice about wearing a pair of jeans, remember the darker the wash, the dressier – and don’t be afraid to pair it with a blazer and accessorize. Although 2012’s Cloud Atlas had vast ambitions, its puzzle-within-a-puzzle era-hopping storylines became intellectually turgid. And now they have backtracked notably with the blockbuster silliness of Jupiter Ascending, a candy-coloured sci-fi extravaganza that starts on Earth before launching itself on an inter-galactic mission that’s an eye-popping pastiche of everything from Star Wars to Soylent Green. toilets in Chicago. As it turns out, the unaware Jupiter is the “genetic reincarnation” of one of the leaders of the Abrasax clan, one of the most powerful and ruthless families in the entire universe. As such, she is heir to a staggeringly vast fortune – including the planet Earth, whose entire population is a crop due to be “harvested.” Jupiter’s genetic original had three children, and they all have nefarious designs on Jupiter. Luckily, this resourceful gal has a protector in the form of Caine Wise (Channing Tatum), a “hunter” who was originally hired by one of the Abrasax siblings to find the missing heir but who now has fallen for Jupiter and become her hunky guardian. Ascending is a sometimes-effective hodge-podge of hyper-kinetic chase scenes, creepy critters appropriate for an ambitious space opera, and visually lush set design (riffing on everything from Art Deco-informed Egyptian statuary to the paintings of Maxfield Parrish). But even stunning images of space ships breaching like whales as they emerge from beneath thick clouds of space dust can’t compensate for all the genre clichés, plotting contrivances, and hammy acting (particularly Eddie Redmayne, so great as Stephen Hawking, who may have just put his Oscar chances in peril). Kunis is cute as anything, and some of the spectacle works well on its own terms. But after two hours of synapse-jolting/ hell’s-a-poppin’ brain pummeling you’ll probably yearn for something slow-paced and thoughtful on PBS. I felt Season 2 was strong, with some unexpected twists and a continuation of the dark, disturbing world of politics we’ve come to know and reluctantly love on the show. I won’t spoil anything for those who haven’t caught up yet, but last season ended with a pretty substantial, well, promotion, and I’m looking forward to seeing where they take it from here. Parks and Recreation is back on Feb 24, but its return is bittersweet as this will be the final season for what has consistently been one of the funniest and well written shows on the boob tube. Part of its success has been its phenomenal cast, including Amy Poehler, Aziz Ansari, Rashida Jones, Chris Pratt and Nick Offerman, all big names in their own right now. A couple of them have already left the show, but the rest are back for a last hurrah. I’m glad to have them back but will be sorry to see them go. Now for some new series: If you are as enamoured by the truly weird and hilarious comedy styling of John C. Reilly as I am, you should be looking forward to Bagboy, airing on Feb. 20 (bit unclear as to what channel here in Canada, but on Comedy Central in the U.S.). This half-hour special sees Reilly returning as Dr. Steve Brule, only this time Brule is an actor playing a bag boy in a doomed sitcom. If you’re not familiar with Reilly or Brule, this special will seem incredibly strange. And it is. But it’s also hysterically funny. Starting on Fox on March 1 is The Last Man on Earth, a new comedy created by, and starring, SNL alum Will Forte and involving superstar directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie). I’d vouch for the show based on the talent alone, but the trailer also sets the stage for a quirky bit of fun about just what the title promises. Another Netflix title sees the producers of 30 Rock, including Tina Fey, returning with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, about a woman freed from the isolation of 15 years in an apocalypse-obsessed cult back into the real world. It’s a fish-out-of-water type story we’ve all seen before, but, come on, I mean, how good was 30 Rock? Let’s hope this lives up to its pedigree. Finally, from the creators of Breaking Bad and House, comes Battle Creek, a new comedy cop series starring Josh Duhamel, Dean Winters and Kal Penn, among others, premiering March 1 on Global. If Better Call Saul isn’t scratching your Breaking Bad itch, perhaps this show, about a small time detective paired with a top dog cop, will hit the spot.

Your popularity will grow this month. Perhaps you will join a class or a group or become more involved with a friend? Whatever happens, you will become more aware of the value of friendships in your life, and how important they are to you. You will also be aware of the benefit of cooperating with others. You will see that others help you get what you want. Therefore, focus on team efforts. Form working units. Accept invitations from others.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

This month the Sun is at the top of your chart. This is the only time all year this happens. This is a powerful phenomenon. It acts like a flattering spotlight on you, which is why everyone thinks you are fabulous and capable. This is why you will be approached to take on increased responsibilities. Just say yes, because you will dazzle everyone without doing anything special. This

You want to be a new, improved Leo!

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

The Sun is your source of energy, and this week it moves 180º opposite from your sign. Since this is as far away from you as it gets all – your energy will flag. You will need more sleep. It’s important to acknowledge this and accept it, instead of ignoring it. Take naps. This polarized position of the Sun can create problems dealing

You suddenly want to turn over a new leaf and pull your life together. You will make To Do lists so that you feel you are on top of your scene and being as productive and efficient as possible. Not only will you focus on accomplishing tasks, you will also focus on improving your health. (Since you’re on this kick – why not go for the whole enchilada?) However, fiery Mars will be opposite your sign, and this might create tension with friends and partners. You might even encounter an enemy. Fortunately, Venus will soften things.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

A playful, creative time awaits you because this month is one of the most fun months of the year for you. Get out and have a good time! Accept invitations to party and attend sports events. You want a chance to express yourself and be free to be who you really are. Relations with children will be important. This is also a strong highlight on romance and love affairs. Some of you might have a work-related love affair. Meanwhile, all is not just fun and games because you will work hard at your job due to the fact that you take pride in what you’re doing right now.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

This month is a busy swirl of fun events with family members and playful times with children plus romantic dates, sports events, social occasions and even vacations. Yet, with all this focus on fun and creative times, your strongest focus will be on home, family and your personal life. Some might be involved with a parent. One thing is certain, you will give yourself a personal report card about the way you live your life, and

the choices you make. Examine how your past choices create your future. That’s the secret.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

This month is jam-packed with short trips, conversations with everyone, busy, daily errands, as well as increased reading, writing and study. You are ambitious about what you want to accomplish in your external world, your daily world, and even at home. In the midst of this busy pace, you might also redecorate or renovate where you live. Family conflicts, as well as loving family get-togethers, are both in the picture. It was ever thus. George Burns was right. ‘Happiness is a large, loving, close-knit family in another city.’

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Although you are focused on earnings, money, cash flow, assets and possessions, now more than any other time in the year, is the time to ask yourself if the things you own serve your needs. In other words, do you own your stuff or does it own you? Are you a slave to your possessions? What you need to do now is gain a better control over your life through what you own. Meanwhile, Mars makes you direct and forthright, while Venus, softens all your communications and helps you earn money. Ka-ching!

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

The Sun has returned to your sign for the first time in 11 months giving you an opportunity to recharge your batteries for the coming year. It attracts favourable circumstances and important people to you. Because the Sun is your source of energy, you will project yourself more forcefully than usual, and make a great impression on others. It also makes you want to talk to others and get your ideas out. Meanwhile, you’re working hard to earn money, and spend it!
