The West Kootenay Advertiser begins a seven-part series on child and youth mental health issues.
PART THREE OF SEVEN
When it is more than anxiety or depression: MENTAL HEALTH
eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder
BY DR. DAVID SMITH The ages between 12 to 24 are challenging for almost all youth. The biological, social, physical and psychological path to adulthood is not easy, even under the best of circumstances. But coupled with that tough journey is the fact that 75 per cent of all mental health disorders first show up in these teen/young adult years, too. For the majority, the mental health issue is apt to be mild to moderate anxiety or depression; both highly treatable. A number of other very important mental health issues, however, also tend to arise first in the teen years. Here is some general information and links to resources for two specific issues: eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Next week we will talk about bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. In all cases, if you suspect your child might be suffering from a specific condition talk to your family doctor or contact the Child and
Youth Mental Health clinic provided by the Ministry of Children and Family Development in your nearest community. Call Service BC at 1-800-661-8773 to find the nearest MCFD office to you. Eating disorders: The transition from adolescence to adulthood is particularly risky for the development of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). An estimated 0.9 per cent of young women aged 12 to 24 will develop AN, while about 1.5 per cent of young women develop BN. While young women are three times more likely to develop these disorders, young men in recent years are increasingly showing to have eating issues. While our societal obsession with thinness may set the scene; genetic risk factors, as well as underlying anxiety, perfectionism and self-esteem issues are thought to combine to trigger the disorders. Once anorexia starts and the body gets into starvation mode, the brain chemistry changes. As well, the body’s dehydration, altered electrolyte balance and poor nutritional status can lead to heart rhythm issues and other organ function problems. The goal in treating anorexia is to re-feed the person to a healthier weight, and then treat the disordered thinking behind the condition, with one or more of the most effective treatments. These treatments include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), family-based therapy and dialectic behavior therapy (DBT). Re-feeding and psychotherapy may co-occur once the person is progressing to a healthier weight. With bulimia, along with CBT, antidepressant medication has been shown to be helpful. In both conditions, medications may be helpful if there is a co-occurring mood or anxiety disorder, as is often the case.
Symptoms of AN to look for in your teen include rapid or significant weight loss, food restriction and obsession with calories or exercise. For BN, weight loss may not be very apparent, but your teen may go to the washroom immediately after eating and run the water. You may see evidence of vomiting in the toilet bowl. Since anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness, it is important to seek help at the first signs. For more information and to see a full listing of provincial programs, including the Provincial Specialized Eating Disorders Program for Children and Adolescents at BC Children’s Hospital, as well for videos and other helpful information, see Kelty Eating Disorders, keltyeatingdisorders.ca. Another source for information is the National Eating Disorders Information Centre, nedic.ca. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Obsessions are repetitive, intrusive and unwanted thoughts that cause the affected youth great anxiety. Compulsions are the actions or the rituals that he or she must go through to reduce the anxiety caused by the obsessive thoughts. A very common OCD obsession is about contamination or germs, with the compulsion being the need to hand wash repeatedly or avoid any surface, individual or situation where germs might be present. Another common OCD obsession is the fear that something terrible will happen unless the youth takes a specific ritualistic action, like counting, checking, or placing items in a specific order. Genetic risk factors plus an environmental trigger are thought to set off the illness, which tends to run in families. One environmental trigger that may be linked to sudden onset
OCD symptoms in some susceptible children is a recent infection with streptococcus A bacteria (strep throat.) This burgeoning, but controversial area of research may yield more insights in future years. Treatment with antidepressant-types of medication plus exposure response prevention therapy — a specific form of cognitive behavioural therapy that features gradual exposure to the issue causing the obsessive thoughts and compulsionsv — has been shown to have success with some individuals. Left untreated, however, OCD can be very debilitating. The longer the OCD goes on, the harder it is to treat. Again, if you are worried about possible signs of OCD in your child, see your family doctor or the Ministry of Children and Family Development CYMH clinic in your region. They may refer your child to specialized services, such as psychiatric services or the specialized OCD program at BC Children’s Hospital. For more information, see at ocdbc. ca, www.keltymentalhealth.ca or the OCD pages at cmha.ca
Dr. David Smith is an adolescent and adult psychiatrist and the medical director of the Okanagan Psychiatric services for Interior Health. This series of columns on common child and youth mental health issues is a project of the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substances Use Collaborative. The Collaborative involves multiple individuals, organizations and ministries all working together to increase the number of children, youth, and their families receiving timely access to mental health services and support in the Interior Health and Vancouver Island regions. The Collaborative is jointly funded by Doctors of BC and the government of BC.
Eating disorders can be hard to spot but are treatable CRAIG LINDSAY West Kootenay Advertiser
Although there has been a lot of literature and media written about eating disorders — there is still a huge stigma attached to this mental disorder. “Eating disorders are characterized by a significant change in eating habits such as an extreme and unhealthy reduction of food intake or overeating. There is also an exaggerated concern about one’s body shape or weight”, said Javier Gonzalez Plasencia, M.A. Counseling Psychology and team leader for the West Kootenays for Child and Youth Mental Health for the Ministry for Children and Family Development. There are three main eat-
ing disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder. “It’s important to remember that these disorders are about much more than food,” said Gonzalez, “they’re also about how you feel about yourself, how you cope with your feelings and other factors. The media has created images of what we should look like creating unrealistic and unhealthy expectations of what our body should look like.” Both anorexia and bulimia are mental illnesses that affect how you feel about your body and how you eat. “With anorexia there is a preoccupation and obsession with having a thin or skinny figure. There is also the fear of gaining weight,”
It’s important to remember that these disorders are about much more than food, said Gonzalez. Gonzalez said with bulimia you eat an excessive amount of food in a short pe-
riod of time, which is called binge eating, and then have the urge to purge or get rid of what you just ate. “While you eat, you might feel like you
can’t control how much you eat,” he said. “You also might feel good while you’re eating but when you’re finished eating you might be very
concerned about your body weight and image. As a result, you try to purge the food.”

Obsessive compulsive disorder
Most people wonder from time to time if their car is locked or if they left the iron unplugged. But, if you suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours become so excessive they interfere with your daily life. “It’s an anxiety disorder,” said Gonzalez. “OCD is one of the toughest anxiety disorders to deal with… obsessive compulsive disorder is one of compulsions and the more we practice it the more difficult it is to get rid of. It can be very debilitating.” Gonzalez said that cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the therapy of choice to treat OCD. “OCD is characterized by intrusive and persistent thoughts that lead to behaviours that are seen as irrational. The person afflicted by this disorder can be further distressed as they recognize the irrationality of their intrusive thoughts”. Gonzalez said most people have those “idiosyncracies” such as checking the door to see if it’s locked, but it’s not debilitating. But when you cannot function properly in your life because of these compulsions that’s OCD. “We all have quirks and that’s fine because we can live with it,” he said. “But when you become so obsessed you need to count to 1,000 before saying yes it can be very debilitating. But it’s controllable. There is lots of literature.” Gonzales said that with self-help and by changing some of the behaviours with CBT it can be controlled. “In the most persistent and extreme cases a combination of medication like SSRI’s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy are the treatment of choice for the reduction of OCD symptoms.”
Gonzalez. “Eating disorders also tend to run in families. So you have a higher risk of developing an eating disorder if a close family member also has an eating disorder.” Gonzalez said it’s very important for anyone with an eating disorder to get help because binging, purging and/or severely limiting food intake can cause a lot of serious health problems. “But eating disorders are very treatable and many people recover with treatment,” he added. Gonzalez said the first step in treatment is talking to a doctor who can determine whether it is a physical issue or is, in fact, an eating disorder and what can be done to treat it. Treatment options can include: counseling, nutritional help from a nutritionist, support groups, medication and, if necessary, hospitalization.

Eighty-sixth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names. The mostly-forgotten Boundary railway point of Hartford Junction, or just Hartford, was at mile 7.5 on the Eholt-to-Phoenix branch of the Columbia and Western Railway, and named after the Hartford mineral claim. It was originally considered part of Wellington Camp, first mentioned in the Victoria Daily Colonist of August 11, 1895, quoting the Midway Advance: “Mr. McIntosh, the fortunate owner of the Winnipeg, Wellington Camp, has already sunk a shaft 25 feet deep on his property.” Whether Wellington was named for the New Zealand capital or the Duke of Wellington is unknown. The Hartford claim was first mentioned in the Boundary Creek Times of April 2, 1898: “Forbes M. Kerby, M.E. [mining engineer], was in town Wednesday. He is at present surveying the Hartford and J. and R., in Wellington camp, owned by Jones and Rogers …” The newspaper added on May 28: “The Hartford, Ranger, J. and R. fraction and Hartford fraction are a group of very promising claims owned by John Rogers and H.J. Jones …” Where the name Hartford came from is unknown, but there are many such places in the US. The earliest mention of Hartford Junction — the point where the CPR right-of-way branched off to the Golden Crown and Calumet claims — is in the Cascade Record of October 28, 1899, in Ed Simp-

son’s application for a hotel liquor license. However, according to historian Jan Jonker, Simpson’s application notice was “likely a deception, an attempt to obtain one when the hotel’s actual owner [John Dorsey] couldn’t, after having been fined for selling liquor without a license.” Dorsey moved to Hartford from Gladstone and opened his hotel in August 1899 on the Toboggan mineral claim. Simpson, meanwhile, was a partner in the Bellevue Hotel in Phoenix with Dorsey’s wife Georgie. William Buker, previously operator of a boarding house at the BC mine, bought the Hartford Hotel from Dorsey in September 1900 and built another hotel nearby, the Clifton. He in turn sold the Hartford Hotel in 1902 to Joseph J. Bassett, who had mineral claims in the area as well as a contract to supply cord wood to the CPR. Joseph Graham, a former co-owner of the Union Hotel in Phoenix, bought the Clifton Hotel in November 1903 but it closed within a year and the liquor license was transferred to Bassett’s hotel. Bassett renovated the building in 1910 but was denied a license renewal at the end of 1912 “upon the grounds that it is off the regular highway and no longer any convenience to the public.” The hotel burned down on November 12, 1914. Bassett and his wife escaped unharmed. Afterward, he continued to stake mineral claims in the area. The last known newspaper mention of Hartford Junction was in 1915, but the name survives in Hartford-Athelston Road. (Thanks to Jan Jonker for providing much of the above.)

New website celebrates stand up paddle boarding for mature paddlers It’s fair to say that seniors today may be a different breed than the seniors of fifty years ago. We’re healthier and more active — and possibly just a little more adventurous. A local senior has set up to celebrate with new opportunities for folks like herself interested in the growing sport of stand up paddle boarding. Castlegar graphic designer Kathy Verigin was intrigued when, while on vacation in Hawaii, she first saw stand up paddle boarders playing in the surf. But it took a nudge from her husband to find the courage to try. When she did, she couldn’t believe how easy it was — or how much fun.

Once I am geared up and on my board I find myself smiling and laughing like a little kid, and I start thinking: what could be better than this?
Thus began a love affair with stand up paddle boarding (SUP), a sport Verigin says is accessible for people at any fitness level and an excellent way to build core strength and balance while enjoying the great outdoors. It seemed a natural thing to take that passion and, using her graphic design skills, share it through a new website offering tips and resources, www. standuppaddleboardingguide.com. Now, Verigin — an active 60-year-old and SUP enthusiast — has created a sister site for mature paddlers. The site, www. supseniorenthusiasts.com, offers encouragement to get started with information on skill-building, equipment, and stories by and about senior SUP enthusiasts. Since its launch, traffic has been brisk.

“We — meaning mature paddlers — need more avenues for discussion, more talk about the benefits and more encouragement to start-up, play and explore this great sport,” says Verigin. “There hasn’t been much out there. I want to be a part of changing that.” Through the website’s discussion forum Verigin hopes other SUP senior enthusiasts will tell their stories and develop an online community, and through her blog find out the latest on gear, opportunities, and more. On the home front, Verigin is organiz-
ing a local SUP seniors social meet-up group to get together near Robson and enjoy paddling together on the Columbia River. Verigin emphasizes that this group is for self-identified mature paddlers: there’s no particular age to qualify. She also emphasizes fun. “Once I am geared up and on my board I find myself smiling and laughing like a little kid, and I start thinking: what could be better than this?” Verigin says. “That’s a feeling I’d love to share with others.” To find out more, contact Verigin through the “contact” tab on the website.

Braving the winter in search of summer wine The view from Poplar Grove over Okanagan Lake is spectacular as is the Syrah, which, like the best of the winery’s reds, benefits from the extra aging afforded by cellaring it for a couple of years longer than the norm. single vineyard. By the time the rear two rows were lowered to accommodate the purchased cases of wine, the seven-seat MDX was strictly a two-seater. Despite its load, it leapt up to the Pennask Summit on the Okanagan Connector as fast the outside temperature dropped to minus five. The Coquihalla Highway was bathed in sunlight and the descent to Hope was smooth and quiet but for the rattle from the bottles. Bring on the Aussies! If you can’t get to the festival tasting room, tour Okanagan wine country this summer… with a designated driver, of course.

Mercedes gets a grip with winterland
By Zack Spencer
Montreal – If there is one part of this vast country that knows about winter and winter driving, it is the province of Quebec. Winter weather can stretch from November until April, which is why this frost bitten part of the country mandates winter tires on all vehicles and was the perfect spot to showcase two products from Mercedes Benz, the B-Class and CLA-Class. Both are now equipped with Mercedes 4Matic all wheel drive (AWD) system. Touching down in Montreal, the outside temperature was heading to minus twenty three overnight and minus nineteen for a daytime high, plus snow, lots of snow. Perfect for winter driving but not for standing outside. Looks Both the B-Class hatchback and CLA sedan are based on the Mercedes small car platform that is also shared with the GLA compact crossover. The B and GLA are sold with front wheel drive (FWD) and now AWD. The latest B-Class was introduced a few years ago and gets a mild facelift, including a new grille, lower chin spoiler, different wheels and a new accent line down the side. The CLA was just introduced last year so external updates will have to wait another couple of years. The B-Class is a taller hatchback design that provides a useful package for young
families, including bigger rear windows and a large hatch and cargo space. The CLA on the other hand is more about style, competing for the young, upwardly mobile crowd that want to be seen in this sleek, low slung sedan, it isn’t the best choice for a family. Inside Both the B-Class and CLA receive nice updates for 2015 on the inside. Both share the same dash so updating both made sense. The screen that sits front and centre on the dash, like and iPad is larger, moving to a standard 7-inch screen or optional 8-inch screen on cars equipped with navigation. This screen is controlled with a small knob between the front seats. Other updates include a sportier and very comfortable steering wheel, a revised stereo head unit and a new instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. Heated seats are now standard equipment for 2015 but heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel are not available in these cars. The BClass 4Matic is a $2,200 premium over the FWD version, starting at $33,500. The CLA has the same $2,200 charge for AWD, starting at $36,800. One nice feature available on the CLA is an “exclusive” package that includes a leather dashboard with French stitching for $2,300. Drive To explore the abilities of these two new products, the Olympic rowing basin used
for the 1976 Montreal games was partially plowed, exposing sheet ice with a fresh sprinkling of snow. This provided a great example of the limits of grip and the abilities of the electronic stability program, in conjunction with the AWD system. On sheet ice, there is no grip, so sliding is easy. It was on the rural roads outside of Montreal near the ski resort of Bromont that the 4Matic system proved useful. The system is designed to provide power to the front wheels as often as possible and instantly transfer power to the rear wheels when extra grip is needed, it all happens in a nanosecond. The maximum amount of power sent to the rear wheels if fifty percent. I noticed that these cars, when placed in “sport” mode actually allow the car to slip and slide without the electronics being too
oppressive. An overly aggressive nanny style is often used by other manufacturers and it shuts down any type of sliding, something that can be welcome by advanced drivers. Altogether, both cars feel very well balanced, almost like a rear-wheel-drive car when a controlled slide is achieved. Verdict Mercedes has had enormous success with its 4Matic AWD system, accounting for eighty five percent of its sales. With the introduction of these two new models in late 2014, the number has jumped to over ninety percent. This opens up the safety and stability of AWD to a larger market. One thing to keep in mind is these two products offer great value if the buyer keeps and eye on the options. The “must have” package include
the Premium Package for an additional $3800 on both the B-Class and CLA. This includes automatic climate control, a huge panoramic sunroof, rear view camera, blind spot system and navigation. This brings the 4Matic price on the B-Class to $37,300 and $40,600 on the CLA. Not overly expensive for a Mercedes Benz product but pricier than the starting price suggests. Should you consider the 4Matic version of the B-Class and CLA? Absolutely, based on the added level of security, grip and improved resale value. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca The Lowdown Power: 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder with 208hp Fill-up: 10.0L/7.5L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: B-Class 4Matic $33,500 CLA 4Matic $36,800

Learning with the right tools Mecaglisse, Que. – Whatever your craft or hobby of choice is, having the right tools to execute your activities is paramount. As an avid scrapbooker, I couldn’t imagine my life without a sharp pair of scissors, photos, flashy paper and double-sided tape. If you’re a runner, proper footwear mitigates injuries and minimizes blisters. For someone learning to be a better winter driver, having appropriate tires, a mechanically sound vehicle and the right teachers will certainly increase confidence in slippery situations. Enter Porsche’s Camp4: a winter driving program available to everyone. It’s an event I’ve attended before and learned a lot from. But what’s it like for someone who’s already considered a professional driver? – BC resident Scott Hargrove is well versed in racing. He joined our group of international journalists on the program. At 20 years old, he’s the current GT3 Porsche Cup

Challenge champion in Canada. He also took home second place in the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires. That was just his 2014 race year. His résumé is impressive and he knows a thing or two about car control. Then again, we can all
learn something new, no matter how good we are. “Driving on snow and ice is extremely different to any situation I have been in before,” remarks Scott.

Alexandra Straub For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!” Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby. Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit. Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can find her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive. When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either find her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world. While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. And to really help her relax, she scrapbooks. Share your thoughts and requests with Alexandra at alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Learning with the right tools continued from page A10
“The technique is completely different compared to racing on pavement, where the fastest way around the track is the smoothest. On snow and ice, it’s all about pitching the car sideways and using the throttle to execute the turn. So despite my extensive racing background, this was a whole new experience for me with a whole new learning curve.” Each Porsche at Camp4, whether it be a Cayman, Carrera, rear or all-wheel drive, were equipped with Nokian 1.5mm studded tires. Yes, we needed grip but we also wanted to slide these amazing machines sideways! As the group is having the time of our lives, the purpose of the activities is to connect with the car and
THE
feel how the ice track beneath us is ever changing. Each lap brings new challenges – sometimes it got so slippery our only option was to spin out – or as the instructors would say, “we’d run out of talent!” The unnerving feeling – exhilarating in most cases – of pitching a car into a corner and holding the slide leaves you with a real sense of accomplishment. Or left me wanting to become a rally driver. Underneath the smiling faces is a much more satisfying feeling; the feeling of being more confident in yourself and your abilities to adapt to different environments. As Scott and I are chatting, I ask why he thinks this kind of training is both good for him and every other driver out there. “Camp 4 will teach you more about car control over any other form of high performance driving school,”
Y A S R O Y R T
Scott says. “Being in a low traction environment allows you to slide a car at slow speeds. Drivers can then get a feel for what is like to slide a car, react appropriately and recover. This experience will translate directly to the street and help any driver in an emergency situation.” Learning to be a better driver and having a lot of fun doing it? Yes, I’m ready for that. So is Scott. “I would go back in a heartbeat,” he adds. “Who wouldn’t love to drive a whole range of Porsches in the snow? It’s an experience you don’t get to have very often and one you definitely don’t want to miss out on!” Visit http://www.porsche.com/canada-pde/en/yourcamp4/ for more information on Porsche’s Camp4.

Earlybird RVers get ready for the open road
By Keith Morgan
The annual Earlybird RV Show signals a fast approaching spring and time to prepare for a summer on the open road. The biggest RV Show in these parts is underway and runs throughout the weekend at TRADEX in Abbotsford. The popular event will showcase the ultimate display of new recreational vehicles, destinations, and products. Industry professionals will be at the show to prepare the RV community for the upcoming season with a diverse range of seminars, providing the latest information and tips designed to ensure a safe and exciting summer. The Seminar Stage schedule is crammed with speakers preparing to share their expertise. The first day welcomes House of Q’s ‘BBQ Brian’ Misko for the
very first time. Aside from being a master chef of barbecue sauce and rubs, House of Q is one of Canada’s finest in barbecue competition. While highlighting his drool-worthy sauces and recipes, Brian will discuss his ventures into world tournaments. Catch BBQ Brian every day until Sunday to get your hands on the pre-sale of his cookbook, “Grilling with House of Q,” that will make RV trips this summer that much tastier. Other highlights onstage include industry experts John Clarke and KC Chavda from 2 Guys RV Education who will discuss RV customization, waste management, and market trends. RVers can also look forward to driving tips and advice from Euro Driving School. Visit the This Old RV Seminar stage to learn more about pre-trip inspections, owner and safety tips, solar power and energy saving options. How to safely navigate wet roadways Spring showers certainly may bring flower laters on, but they also contribute to challenging driving conditions. Early spring weather can be fickle, vacillating between dry, wet and even icy conditions. Drivers need to remain on their toes to safely traverse roadways near and far. Wet roadways and poor driving conditions contribute to thousands of road accidents each and every year. As roads get wet, oil and other substances rise to the surface of the pavement, which can quickly become slippery and compromise the traction offered by tires. According to the United States Department of Transportation, there are around 707,000 automobile crashes each year due to rain. Heavy rains also may lead to puddles, which
can obscure hazards on the roadway. Cars may stall out in puddles or hydroplane, which occurs when cars coast along the surface of the water. Puddles also can be splashed by oncoming cars, leading to visibility issues. It is in every driver’s best interest to use caution when driving on wet roads. The following tips can help prevent accidents, injuries and even fatalities during the rainy season. · Slow down. Drivers should drive slower when roads are wet and when rain compromises visibility. It can take up to three times longer to stop on a wet road than a dry one. By slowing down you will be able to stop or veer out of the way of danger. · Leave room. When driving on wet roads, leave
more room between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Again, this plays into stopping distance. Tailgating increases your risk of rearending a vehicle if you cannot stop in time on a wet roadway. · Stay alert. It can be easy to be lulled into complacency while driving. But staying alert and conscious of every detail going on around you can reduce your risk of accident when driving in less than ideal conditions. · Skip cruise control. As a driver, you want to remain in control of acceleration and speed, rather than leaving it up to the cruise control system. If you begin to hydroplane on cruise control, the car may actually speed up. · Use your headlights. Headlights can light up the
road in front of you, helping illuminate potential hazards. Lights on a car also make your vehicle more visible to others on the road. Always turn on the headlights in inclement weather. · Avoid jerky movements. Keep a steady pace and the vehicle in control. Jerking the wheel or accelerating and braking in a erratic fashion can cause the vehicle to spin out or skid on wet roads. · Check your tires. Inspect your tires for tread wear and air pressure. Tires should be rotated as part of routine maintenance. Poorly performing tires are a significant safety risk. If you live in an area known for a lot of rain, invest in tires designed for wet road conditions. Don’t let wet weather get the best of you. Slow down, stay visible and be on the alert.

Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Ask Keith’s media contemporaries to describe his approach to anything he undertakes and you will hear such words as “passion”, “enthusiasm”, “energy and “innovation” used repeatedly. Never in neutral, the Brit-trained news guy drives projects as he would a finely tuned car, adding the options and features along the way to make the experience as good as it can be. Indeed, Keith is an innovator in developing editorial content for all media platforms and a master at weaving informative and entertaining material of wide appeal into imaginative revenue generation projects. He launched his journalistic career in 1975 as a reporter for his hometown newspaper in Blackpool, England, moving to Vancouver in 1980 where he began a 32-year-career with The Province/ Vancouver Sun. Latterly he created such highly profitable and readable specialty sections at the papers as Driving and Sunday Homes. The multiple-award-winner broadened his media experience by authoring two books, making regular TV appearances, hosting talk shows in Vancouver and Kelowna and writing and executive producing The Province Road Test quiz show for prime time TV. Away from the day job, Keith has donated his creative abilities in support of the Coast Foundation’s Courage to Come Back Awards, the United Way and the Christmas Bureau. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Students in the Selkirk College millwright/machinist program are amongst those who will benefit from new equipment provided through grants from the provincial government. The equipment will be operational in the coming months.
Selkirk College students get in-demand skills
New trades training equipment provided through government grants Selkirk College will receive $315,428 to buy new trades training equipment that supports students entering in-demand occupations that are critical to the economy. The funding is part of BC’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint commitment of $185 million over three years for trades training infrastructure and equipment at public post-secondary institutions across the province. “The new funding that Selkirk College has received will provide upto-date trades equipment, allowing our students to reach their goals, secure high-demand employment, and serve the needs of our industry and community partners,” says Selkirk College president Angus Graeme.
Our investment in trades training equipment supports a highly trained workforce, The Selkirk College trades programs are located at Nelson’s Silver King campus. Examples of new trades training equipment include an industry-standard drill press for millwright students, a Lab Volt renewable energy trainer for electrical students and an air conditioning trainer for heavy mechanic students. The provincial government based the funding for new equipment on consultations with educational in-
stitutions and the Industry Training Authority, as well as the most recent labour market data. The College of the Rockies in the East Kootenay will also receive $325,274 for equipment in its trades programs. “Our investment in trades training equipment supports a highly trained workforce,” says Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson. “Students in trades programs at College of the Rockies and Selkirk College are getting hands-on experience that employer’s need.” BC’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint was launched in April 2014 and outlines how the province is re-engineering the education system — from Kindergarten through to post-secondary training and beyond — to make sure education and training aligns with BC jobs. By 2022, it is estimated that there will be one million job openings in BC and more than 78 per cent of those jobs will require some form of post-secondary education. Projections show that 44 per cent of those jobs will be in skilled trades and technical occupations. “Sectors critical to our economic growth — such as oil and gas, mining, and forestry — need workers to graduate job ready,” says Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. “New trades training equipment at Selkirk College and College of the Rockies gives students hands-on experience with tools currently used by these industries.” The funding for new trades equipment builds on the 54 additional critical trades training spaces at Selkirk College and the 32 additional critical trades training spaces at College of the Rockies announced in July. For more information on Selkirk College industry and trades training programs go to selkirk.ca/school/ industry-and-trades-training.

SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS
PETS on PARADE THE MILLION ACTS OF KINDNESS INITIATIVE Making the world a better place can be as easy as being kind. As the BC SPCA gears up to celebrate its 120th year of helping the province’s most vulnerable animals, the organization is launching a year-long initiative, Million Acts of Kindness, which invites all British Columbians to be kind – and to pass it on. “The purpose of the campaign is to celebrate the amazing work that is already being done to create more humane communities throughout B.C. and to encourage animal lovers in the province to take part in a weekly act of kindness to help save animal lives,” says Lorie Chortyk, BC SPCA general manager, community relations. “The weekly challenge will be something that everyone can easily do, and we hope that, by the end of 2015, we will have inspired a million acts that will change the face of animal welfare in B.C. forever.” Examples of the weekly acts of kindness range from buying humanely raised food products to sharing a shelter animal’s profile on social media to emailing local MLAs to encourage their support for animal issues. The million acts will include the services and programs for abused, injured, neglected and
homeless animals carried out by the BC SPCA in 2015, Chortyk notes. “Kindness starts with just one act – it doesn’t have to be huge,” she says. “We know that together, we can create a better world for animals, and the Million Acts of Kindness initiative is a way of celebrating the society’s milestone anniversary by engaging even more people in our fight against animal cruelty.” In 1895 the BC SPCA was created by a small group of merchants, journalists and clergy who were deeply concerned about the abuse of horses being used as beast of burden as B.C. entered a construction boom. The dedication of these compassionate individuals resulted in the establishment of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act in B.C. and the creation of the BC SPCA, which is today, one of the largest animal welfare organizations of its kind in North America, Chortyk says. “Through our anniversary campaign, we’ll be calling on all animal lovers to help us continue that legacy of compassion with contagious kindness – we want it to spread far and wide – until every animal in B.C. is free from pain, fear and suffering.” Watch the Million Acts of Kindness video, see a list of each weekly act of kindness or register now at millionacts.ca to get involved.
