District terminates CAO Mission council makes major change at the top

Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Changes needed to be made at municipal hall to move Mission in a new direction, said Mayor Randy Hawes after the district announced the dismissal of its chief administrative officer. The termination was immediate, added Hawes, noting details of former CAO Ken Bjorgaard’s severance package are personal. “It will be reflected in the financial statements. Those

kinds of issues are personal … We don’t go out and advertise this. Ken’s entitled to some privacy too.” In 2013, Bjorgaard received a salary of $178,404, not including expenses. He was released, without cause, last week. Hawes said the change was “a significant decision” for council, who felt the move was necessary to take the community in a new direction. “We’ve come off three years of funding cuts,” said Hawes. “There’s been very little investment in the kinds of infra-

structure that builds parks and families.” Bjorgaard was hired as the district’s director of finance in 2001, the same year Hawes, who was serving as Mission’s mayor at the time, was elected to the provincial legislature. “Ken was outstanding in handling money here when he was (finance director),” said Hawes, adding council’s decision “is no reflection on Ken’s abilities.” Bjorgaard was promoted to CAO in 2012, shortly after the CONTINUED ON 5

New skate park planned Construction slated to begin next spring Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Local skateboarders are enthusiastic about the district’s plans to build a new skateboard park, with many saying it can’t come soon enough. Twenty-four-year-old Shayne agreed a new park is “badly” needed, but noted a lot of the older boarders will not be here in two years. “Mostly high school kids come here,” said 16-year-old Grayam, who was at the skateboard park outside the Leisure Centre Tuesday afternoon. “I usually come in the morning and after school … I live here.” Cameron, 18, said skateboarding was a way for him to connect with his mom’s boyfriend. “I started when I was eight. My mom’s boyfriend was a boarder and he started teaching me. I caught on.” Mission’s skate park was built more than 20 years ago by volunteers and has “deteriorated significantly,” according to a report to council. There are cracks, dips, and chips all over the park. The sport has grown over the years and is now the third largest participant sport in North America for the 10-18 age group. Designs for parks have also evolved from ramps and rails to more sophis-

ticated structures, like bowls and half pipes. Grayam, who suggested Griner Park would be a suitable location, envisions the new park to be a big plaza with a small bowl and a big bowl. Cameron asked for ramps, half pipes, quarter pipes, boxes, and rails. The district’s plan is to establish a project team by the end of February and seek community consultation beginning in May and June. A new site and the final budget is expected to be approved by council in the fall. Construction is slated to begin in spring 2016 and finished in June 2016. Coun. Rhett Nicholson, who used to skateboard as a teenager, tested the park in Mission this week and understands why the demand for a new facility is there. “There are cracks everywhere,” said Nicholson, who is proud the council he is a part of is working to improve amenities for youth and families. “It’s dangerous and painful for skateboarders when they fall.” Nicholson said he enjoyed the camaraderie and challenges of the sport that brings youth together.

Mayor Randy Hawes hears complaints about marijuana grow operations in the community almost on a weekly basis. He doesn’t know if they are legal or illegal ones, but either way, he wants to make sure these operations are housed in a facility with appropriate wiring and electrical hook ups. “The complaints never stop,” said Hawes, noting the residents he spoke with this week have put their homes up for sale. “People are moving because they can’t stand it anymore. They’re being driven out of their home and we need to do something about it.” Hawes hopes to put a system in place where at least homes are being inspected for electrical safety. A Public Safety Inspection Team (PSIT) operated in Mission from 2008 to 2011 conducting safety inspections on homes throughout the community based on unusually high power usage. Hawes said PSIT didn’t work because it was also a cost recovery program. “Homeowners were charged $5,000 even if they suspected there was a grow-op in the past,” said Hawes, noting perhaps the home had been used as one by a previous owner. “That’s not fair.” Hawes explained Surrey’s Electrical Fire Safety Initiative has been instrumental in eliminating marijuana grow-ops in that community. Surrey put the program in place in 2005 and the number of grow ops dropped by 82 per

CAROL AUN PHOTO cent in four years. “No bill is handed out in Surrey,” said Hawes. “It’s about safety.” Hawes believes without any bylaws in place, the problem in Mission will get worse. At Monday night’s council meeting, RCMP Cpl. Shane Holmquist explained the federal government began the medical marijuana program because of a court ruling that decided prohibition of it was unconstitutional. The Marijuana Medical Access Regulations (MMAR) was created in 2001 to allow Canadians with a permit to possess marijuana and produce it for personal use. “Health Canada thought they could manage it, but it spiralled out of control,” said Holmquist. “The program expanded exponentially, and Health Canada couldn’t keep up.” Court cases allowed people to grow the product for themselves, then allowed producers to grow for others. There is a maximum of four licenses per property. Under MMAR rules, there were 477 house grows in 2002 in Canada, but by 2012, there were 22,000 and by 2014, there were 57,799. If house grows are allowed to

continue, it is projected there will be 433,688 by 2024 across the country. According to police, there are 670 house grows in Mission, 687 in Abbotsford, and 694 in Chilliwack. When the numbers are broken down by postal codes, the Mission area has a “substantially high” number compared to the rest of the Lower Mainland region, said Holmquist. MMAR was repealed last year and now Health Canada has no authority to conduct inspections on properties with licensed grows. Hawes knows some people view home inspections as a violation, but he says he is more sympathetic to people who are living beside these unwanted neighbours. Medicinal grow-ops with a license are legal, but inspectors should be allowed to make sure any adjustments to electrical wiring in the homes are safe, said Hawes. The federal government brought in new rules last year outlawing personal home grows in favour of commercial licenses, but their move is being challenged in court. The trial begins in Vancouver on Feb. 23.

2011 municipal election when all but one member of council was removed from office. The most recent election in November 2014, had a similar result. In the three years Bjorgaard worked as CAO for Mission, he oversaw a restructuring at city hall which resulted in $600,000 of

saving in salaries, and $12 million of Mission’s $19-million debt paid off. He was also at the helm when staff morale and departures were issues, resulting in nine senior managers leaving their posts. Between 2012 and spring of 2014, 34 full-time employees had resigned, while 13 retired.

Earlier this week, retired Mission administrator Glen Robertson was appointed interim CAO for Mission on a month to month basis. Robertson served as CAO for 22 years before he retired almost three years ago. “I’m glad to be of service when asked by council,” said Robertson, who was present

Liberal , NDP and Green candidates chosen tion, Abbotsford businessman Jatinder (Jati) Sidhu. Art Green of Hope will run for the Green party. Conservative MP Randy Kamp, who is currently representing the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission riding in Ottawa, announced his retirement almost two

weeks ago after serving four terms. Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton and Kamp’s executive assistant Mike Murray are seeking the Conservative nomination in the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge riding. Dalton will sit as an independent member of the Legislature

at the Feb. 16 council meeting. Robertson, who was in the process of subdividing his property, has put all development activities relating to his property on hold. The search for a top administrator will begin immediately and is anticipated to take three to four months to complete.

Six Conservatives vye for new riding The race for the Conservative nomination in the new riding of Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon is on. Brad Vis, Doris Woodman-McMillan and Korky Neufeld, all of Abbotsford, have already announced their intentions to run, and recently, Paul Redekopp, Liv Grewal, and Morley Anderson — better known as Andy Anderson — also put their names forward. A date for the nomination vote has not yet been set. The Liberal party has already selected their candidate for the upcoming elec-

“The older boards love to teach the younger ones because they know how hard it is,” said Nicholson, who recently bought a new board and plans to introduce the sport to his children. Nicholson also wants to look into building a pump track alongside the new skate park to give young mountain bikers a facility to practice on. “Mission has worldclass mountain bike trails, but there is no succession to use them.” “If we combine it with a skateboard park, maybe it won’t cost us as much.”

OPINION

6 The Mission Record Friday, February 20, 2015

Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Decision needs more time, thought

In a recent, unanimous decision, the Supreme Court of Canada has thrown out the Criminal Code provisions which deal with assisting people to commit suicide. It is a stark reversal of the court’s decision, by a 5-4 margin in 1994, to uphold that aspect of Canadian law. This time around, the abrupt change was likely strongly influenced by the chief justice, Beverley McLachlin, who was one of the dissenting judges 21 years ago. The court has given the federal government one year to come up with new laws to deal with the issue. This timetable is clearly far too ambitious. A federal election is planned for October, and if there ever was an issue that requires careful study and much consultation in advance of a law being proposed, this is it. Try doing that in an election year.

Most surveys suggest that about 80 per cent of Canadians are in favour of some form of assisted dying or euthanasia for people suffering from terminal illness, although just what they actually favour varies widely. Are they in favour of the Dutch or Belgian approach, where teens and people suffering from depression can be put to death by physicians? Or do they favour the far more measured approach adopted in the state of Oregon, where the patient must request drugs, both verbally and in writing, which can end their lives, and take them themselves — and only after a host of other safeguards. The issue requires careful study and more time. – Black Press

50 years in Canada.

WE DON’T MISS A THING New Tax breaks for Canadian families. You could claim up to $2,000!* **Availability and amounts will vary according to each family’s specific circumstances. See an H&R Block tax professional for details.

Let us help you find every available tax credit! Tax Tips For Canadians Over 65

Tax Tips For Families With Children

Q Income split and save: Seniors are allowed to split up to half of their eligible pension income with a spouse or common-law partner. Income splitting allows some seniors to enjoy a significant tax reduction. In the situation where the lower-income spouse has very little income, the tax savings are substantial.

Q Child Amount: Families will benefit from a $2,255 child amount for each child under the age of 18 for the last time in 2014. This will result in a federal tax saving of $338 per child. And if one parent cannot use the entire amount to lower their tax payable, the unused amount can be transferred to a spouse or common-law partner.

Q Get your benefits: Any senior receiving Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) through Old Age Security should file on time to ensure their benefits continue uninterrupted.

Q Credit for being active: The Children’s Fitness Amount is a non-refundable credit is worth up to $1,000 for children under the age of 16 enrolled in an eligible program of physical activity. Not every program meets the eligibility guidelines so you need to ensure you know the requirements. Make sure you keep your receipts. Disabled children will also qualify for the credit if they are under 18.

Q Transfer amounts: If your spouse is unable to completely offset his or her age amount, pension income and disability amount against tax payable, he or she may transfer the unused portion to your return. Q Caregiver amount: If you live with your children and you are over 65, they may be able to claim a caregiver amount for you if your income is less than $20,002. If you are dependent on them due to an infirmity, they may claim you even if.you are under 65. In this case the income threshold will be $22,060. The caregiver amount is increased by the $2,058 family caregiver amount when the dependant is infirm. Q Foreign pension income: Pensions from foreign countries may be subject to special tax treatment under the terms of a tax treaty. Always check with a tax professional to find out if the pension you receive from a foreign source is taxable in Canada. Q Split your CPP and save: You may be able to split part of your CPP retirement benefits with your spouse depending on how long you lived together when you were contributing to the plan. This is an advantage if one senior is in a higher tax bracket than the other. However, to do so, you must apply to Human Resources & Social Development Canada using Form ISP-1002. It cannot be done at the time of tax preparation. Q Medical expenses can add up: If you purchase medical insurance for a trip or wintering in another country, it is considered a medical expense. Medical expenses are calculated based on income so the lower income spouse should claim them. And if you have to travel to obtain medical treatment that was not available where you live, you may be able to claim the cost of transportation, meals and accommodation.

Q Artistic credit: The Children’s Arts Credit is another non-refundable credit worth up to $500 for children under the age of 16 enrolled in an eligible program. This could include language classes, Girl Guides or Scouts, art classes or ballet lessons. Again, keep your receipts to make the claim. Q Universal Child Care Benefit: This is available to any family with children regardless of their household income. It used to be available only for children under the age of six. However, effective January 2015, a new $60 per month component will be paid for children over five and under 18. The component for children under six will also be increased from $100 to $160 per month. Parents will receive a retroactive payment in July 2015 for the enhanced amounts for the first six months of the year UCCB is taxable in the hands of the lower-income spouse. Q Family Tax Cut: For families where one spouse earns more than the other and have at least one child, they may transfer up to $50,000 in taxable income to help reduce their family tax liability. The maximum claim is $2,000. Q Save for future education: Designed to help save for a child’s post-secondary education, parents can make up to $50,000 RESP lifetime contribution. Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) per year is $500.

Trained and trusted, we ensure you get the most out of your taxes. For more information, speak to an H&R Block Tax Professional today.

Lions deliver energetic message Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

Students at Silverdale elementary received an energetic lesson from a pair of unlikely teachers — B.C. Lions players Shawn Gore and Matt McGarva. The Canadian Football League players were in Mission Monday to raise awareness about saving energy as part of the FortisBC Energy Champions and Lions Pride programs. The Lions mixed game playing with energy lessons to keep the students interested in their message of environmental responsibility.

And while football may be their profession, both McGarva and Gore had a natural ability to connect with the kids. “This is just fun, it’s loads of fun. It’s great to see the kids. I’ve been in this position where I was one of them and an athlete came and I got to see a different side to them. A side away from the sport,” said Gore. He joined the program, not just because he believes in the message, but because he wants to be a positive role model for youth. “I thinks it’s more about the energy than the actual message at

times,” he said, explaining that kids enjoy the fact that players are excited to be there and excited to present the information. “We want them to be excited about the good things in life.” According to Gore, the kids always surprise him, either with a question, or an answer. “They are a lot more knowledgeable than we give them credit for… You really can’t beat it. It’s good to have a change and be able to do this in the off season. Silverdale principal Jason Obert believes events like these are

important for their educational aspects. “It’s not just the information they learn about saving energy but also it gets the kids very excited and gives them the opportunity to see people they recognize from outside of the school. Kids getting the opportunity to get excited about learning is always good.” When the offer was issued by the Lions, Obert said his school jumped at the chance to host the event. Along with the energy-saving lessons, the Lions players hosted relay races and other

challenges to keep the students entertained and engaged. Earlier in the day, the Lions were also at Mission’s Windebank elementary to spread the same message. Now entering its fifth season, the FortisBC Energy Champions program is designed specifically for children in kindergarten through Grade 7, emphasizing the importance of environmental responsibility.

Mission Outlaws captain David McGowan and forward Ram Brar stand over Langley Knights’ goaltender Nickolas Trenciansky during Tuesday night’s playoff game. Mission lost 3-1. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO

The Mission City Outlaws began their 2015 playoff run on the wrong skate, dropping a 3-1 decision to the visiting Langley Knights on Tuesday night in Mission. The loss puts Mission down one game to none in the best of seven series. While it was an evenly played contest, the Outlaws couldn’t seem to take advantage of their scoring opportunities.

YOU and the LAW NEGLIGENT ACT MUST “CAUSE” THE INJURY

For a wrongdoer to be liable for negligence, the negligent act must have caused your injury. Sometimes that’s very clear. The defendant’s car rear-ends your vehicle and you suffer a neck injury as a result; it’s obvious the defendant’s negligence caused your whiplash. Other times it’s less apparent. Often, there is more than one potential cause of the injury.

Canada confirmed that a defendant’s negligent act doesn’t have to be the only cause of your injury, so long as it’s a material contributing factor.

Langley opened the scoring in the first period when Joshua Smith found the net behind Mission keeper Bryce Phenix The Outlaws tied the game at one when Kolby Steen scored, before the end of the first. In the middle frame, Langley’s Dylan McCann and Mitchell Biermann scored to put the game away. The Knights poured on the defence in the third, not allowing Mission to get any closer. “We just didn’t bury our chances, they did,” said Outlaws coach Brad Veitch. “We played an OK game. They caught us on our heels a little bit in the second period but other than that it was a pretty even hockey game.” The coach said his players needed to play a little more disciplined style and stay away from the penalty box. Special teams was another area that seemed to hurt the Outlaws. “We definitely at the end there, we stubbed our toe on the power play… We definitely have some work to do there and game plan against them.” The local squad had little time to prepare for the next contest, which took place in Langley on Thursday night. The score was not available at press time. “We have to adapt a little bit to how they like to stretch the ice and make sure we have good defensive coverage in our zone. Then I think we’ll be fine,” said Veitch. The two teams face off again tonight (Friday) in Langley, followed by contests on Saturday (in Mission), Monday (Langley), Tuesday back in Mission and game seven is scheduled for Thursday in Langley. The winner of the series will take on the winner of the Abbotsford/Aldergrove playoff match up. For complete schedule information, visit pjhl.net.

Good hearing, poor comprehension? The number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newlydeveloped hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear. A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the highfrequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear. The person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not

and speech comprehension analysis is done. Where inner-ear damage is present, a software program analyzes the difference relative to normal hearing. These values are then input into the new Venture hearing chip in the Audéo V, which precisely takes into account and balances the frequency range of the person being tested. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation.

Steampunk celebration benefits from provincial funding The Mission Arts Council is gearing up for a Steampunk Spectaculorium, thanks to more than $53,000 in funding from the provincial government. The event, set for

Saturday, Feb. 21 at The Stage, is a biannual fundraiser for the arts council and is a celebration of all things steampunk: from colourful costumes, inventions, roving entertainers to

live and silent auctions. It’s Victorian-era high fashion meets sci-fi chic. The provincial funding is, in part, for a job creation partnership that is providing work

experience for three people. In addition to organizing the steampunk festival, the trio of workers have also been building an event marketing plan, co-ordinating vol-

unteers, including creating a volunteer database, and creating a volunteer handbook over the 40-week project. These workers have helped put together an artists’ directory, a

marketing plan for the Fraser Valley Children’s Festival and a haunted house attraction last October for Halloween. They have also created a pop-up gallery featuring local artists.

“Arts and culture are so important for the vitality of Mission. This is a terrific project for the Mission Arts Council, said Abbotsford-Mission MLA Simon Gibson. “The funds gave us the opportunity to have the participants develop a much-needed artist directory for our many local talented artists, volunteer handbooks, marketing binders for our special events such as the Steampunk Spectaculorium, and learn how to present special events. We hope that the skills the participants gained while being at the MAC will assist them in their careers. We had a fabulous team and we wish them all well, said Nancy Arcand, executive director of the Mission Arts Council.

Mission Library is hosting a Fines Amnesty Day where library customers can return their overdue books to library staff and have their fines waved. This amnesty day is part of Mission Library’s annual Marion Sharpe Day, on Thursday, Feb. 26 during normal library hours, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fine Amnesty Day only applies to overdue materials returned to staff at the Mission Library. This special day does not apply to any other location in the Fraser Valley Regional Library system. Library materials must be returned to library staff at the service desk. Fines will not be waived if late items are returned through the book drop. The amnesty will not apply to previous late fees on the account nor on billed items. Marion Sharpe was the head librarian — at the then termed Mission Centennial Library — for more than 16 years. She passed away in early 2014. Call 604-826-6610 for information.

The Mission Record Friday, February 20, 2015 19

Four Sasquatch players selected Quartet drafted by Junior A Lacrosse League Four Mission minor lacrosse players have been selected in the BC Junior A Lacrosse League draft. Players selected include Nathan McKeigan (11th overall by the Langley Thunder), Kalen Corona (23rd, Langley), Jesse Forster (30th, Langley) and Lucas Taylor (33rd, Port Coquitlam Saints). “It’s always a thrill to see our players go on to the next level, but when you have four in one year, that’s remarkable,” said Mission Minor Lacrosse Club (MMLC) vice-president Paul Horn. McKeigan started playing for Mission at age seven and credits his success to coaches Craig Vetterl and Scott Wortley, and to Team

BC coach Tyson Leies. Like DJ Saari, the former Mission standout who was drafted by the NLL Stealth last summer, McKeigan hopes to play professionally in either the National Lacrosse League or Major League Lacrosse. Forster has played lacrosse in Mission for seven years. He is a multi-sport athlete, involved in field lacrosse and soccer as well. “For me, being involved in the draft was awesome and very exciting. It was a new and fun experience for me waiting to see when I would get picked and which team I would be going to. I am very excited to play for Langley and I think that we will have

great potential to do big things,” he said. Taylor, the only player to get drafted by someone other than Langley, is headed off to the Port Coquitlam Saints organization. “It’s exciting to have the chance to play for such a great team and meet new people, as well as learn new things.” Taylor has played all eight years of his

lacrosse career in Mission and, like the others, made a point of thanking his family, coaches Vetterl and Wortley, as well as his teammates. “A lot of older players from Mission have helped and guided me in the right direction over the years,” he said. “Lacrosse is a great social sport with a fantastic family-like community!”

“These are terrific kids and it has been a real honour to be a part of their lives,” said Mission’s head coach, Scott Wortley. “Each one of them deserves to proud and we should be proud of them.” “For a community of this size, graduating four players to the BCJALL is quite an accomplishment,” said Jeff MacAulay, MMLC president.

People often talk about the importance of family values, sometimes even suggesting that the family is deteriorating. It is perhaps true that the “traditional” family, composed of one man and one woman joined in marriage and having children, is not necessarily the norm nowadays. In fact, statistics indicate a significant increase in the number of single-parent families, blended families, and other permutations of the traditional family in our society today. But is this necessarily a “deterioration” of the family, or is the family structure merely changing to reflect the demands of modern life? If we look to the Bible for enlightenment here, we are unlikely to find any unambiguous help. Firstly, the Bible itself illustrates an evolution in the concept of the family. In the Old Testament, we see many examples of polygamy, and kinship relations were certainly not what we think of them today. Who could marry each other and how people “got married” has changed considerably over the centuries. In the Bible, Jesus tells us that “whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.” (Matthew 12:50). While it may be tempting to see this as signaling Jesus’s disdain for the nuclear family, perhaps the more sensible interpretation is that Jesus is trying to extend the concept of the family so that it includes all of our fellow human beings, and that God must come before family. So, the next time we are tempted to judge someone who comes from a nontraditional family, we should consider that they are indeed our brother and sister.

Question of the Week

Braving the winter in search of summer wine

‘‘

’’

The view from Poplar Grove over Okanagan Lake is spectacular as is the Syrah, which, like the best of the winery’s reds, benefits from the extra aging afforded by cellaring it for a couple of years longer than the norm. A three-kilometre side trip to Red Rooster netted a Reserve Syrah, which exuded yummy plum and cherry from its neck, once opened! One more stop before a relaxing evening spent staring over the lake while sipping on a suite balcony at the Summerland Waterfront Resort. The snowy and very icy single track to the new Sage Hills Vineyard in Summerland required careful navigation. The reward was a barrel tasting with winemaker Andrea Lee and vineyard manager Keenan Thrussell. The new vintage had yet to be bottled but a rosé version hit the spot later! Time to return to the coast via Sandhill Wines in Kelowna. Howard Soon, a B.C. born industry pioneer, makes Syrah from vineyards in the south of the valley and a special ‘small lots’ version from a

single vineyard. By the time the rear two rows were lowered to accommodate the purchased cases of wine, the seven-seat MDX was strictly a two-seater. Despite its load, it leapt up to the Pennask Summit on the Okanagan Connector as fast the outside temperature dropped to minus five. The Coquihalla Highway was bathed in sunlight and the descent to Hope was smooth and quiet but for the rattle from the bottles. Bring on the Aussies! If you can’t get to the festival tasting room, tour Okanagan wine country this summer… with a designated driver, of course. Power: 3.5-litre SOHC, V6, 290 hp, with 6-speed auto paddle shifters and grade control. Fill-up: 12.7/8.5L/100km (city/hwy) Price as tested: $63,990 Base price: $49,990 keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

BLACK Eunice May It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of their beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and greatgrandmother, Eunice May Black on February 9, 2015 in Abbotsford, BC. She was 79. Eunice will always be loved and missed by her husband of 60 years Vic, daughter Lynn (Charley), son Dan (Angela), sister Wynne, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Eunice lived her life believing that family is where life begins and love never ends. This was evident in who she was; through the many friends she cared for and valued, and the closeness of her family she created. The family will not be having a service. Should family and friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to JDRF; Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Wynn passed away at age 67 after a courageous 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer. He passed away peacefully in his home on February 12, 2015 surrounded by his family. Born on March 18, 1947 in New Westminster, BC to Mildred and James Walker, Wynn was the eldest of 3 children. At the age of 6, Wynn began to cultivate his entrepreneurial spirit by selling berries at the side of the road. During his teen years he attended Killarney secondary school and worked at Douglas plywood mill on Annacis Island. In 1969 Wynn operated a salvage mill on Burn Road in Burnaby, B.C and then in 1974 bought a small sawmill in Ruskin B.C. Over the past 40 years, the business has grown to include 3 mills known today as The Waldun Group which is known worldwide as one of the most successful cedar shake & shingle manufacturers. Wynn realized his dream to see the business grow and spent much of his life dedicated to the business. Wynn spent over 50 years enjoying the beach at Boundary Bay and Point Roberts where he as a boy, spent every summer - and would then grow up to watch his boys enjoy the beach and explore the clay cliffs. Wynn enjoyed taking “quick” day trips and had a love for classic cars. He loved to swim and putter in his vegetable garden. He will always be remembered for his spectacular light display every christmas. Wynn is survived by his mother Mildred Walker and his loving wife, Tracey Walker, brothers: Brett (Marcia) Walker and Tipp (Colleen) Walker. His legacy will live on through his children, Clayton (Anita) Walker, Curtis (Loni) Walker, Colin (Rebecca) Walker, step-daughter Jessica (Tyler) Wierzioch, his 11 grandchildren: Jacob, Paige, Anika, Nolan, Carter, Kash, Westin, Kate, Klade, Johanna, and Emma as well as his two nieces: Holly and Hillary Walker. The family would like to thank Dr. Shuel and the palliative care nursing team that provided exceptional support to allow Wynn to stay in his home. Donations can be made to the cancer society in Wynn’s memory. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you take a moment to hug your child, grandchild or friend. Memorial service will be held Saturday February 28, 2015 at 1pm at Cedar Valley Mennonite Church, Mission B.C. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.bakerviewcrematorium.com

FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENTS

On November 14th 2014 at Mission Memorial Hospital, one of the most inspirational, hard-working, funny, and stubborn women you could ever meet — the inimitable Doreen Cameron of Mission; Steelhead’s ‘Grandma Doreen’ to so many — finally stopped chopping wood, begrudgingly gave in to her wornout heart, and softly left her earthly life quietly and peacefully, with her daughter Marna and her dearest friend and neighbour Bonnie at her side. Though she was still full of merriment, mischief and plans aplenty, she’d reluctantly admitted she was deeply tired and truly missed her beloved husband Pike after their 67 remarkable years together and the five long years apart since his passing in November of 2009. No doubt he was waiting for her in one of their adored ‘Volksie’ VW vans, ready to putter off on their next big adventure, side-by-side once again. Coming from a pioneer family and living through the Depression and WWII, Doreen was a tireless worker — from her early days packing shakes and helping run the family logging camp, through raising several generations of both her own and cherished extra children and grandchildren, to her ‘retirement’ years filled with precious great- and greatgreat- grandchildren — and the always shiny waxed floors, lovingly tended rockeries, and endless chopped wood. To the end, in spite of the discomforts and limitations of the still amazing physique she laughingly called “some old lady’s body I find myself in”, she was astoundingly strong and independent, obstinately continuing to drive, and chop & carry wood, in spite of family and community trying to assist her. Doreen loved baking and was renowned for her pies, always making several different kinds at a time so each person could have their favourite. She and Pike were big gardeners and the old house teetered and groaned under the weight of hundreds of jars of canning, four huge overstuffed freezers, and enough stockpiled dry goods for a decade. For a time after Pike’s passing, Doreen hosted Friday night tipple’n’giggle get-togethers for an eclectic gang of neighbourhood gals, where she sipped her fave super-sweet sparkly drinks & let loose, often donning a festive flowery dress, a sparkling brooch, or her infamous glittery bejewelled gold apron. Her personality was as bright and twinkling as her wardrobe, and her eyes always gleamed with happiness and humour. What a character she was! Doreen was born on March 6th, 1925 in the County of Coderre, Saskatchewan, the fourth

child of Robert Henderson and May Cooper. The Hendersons moved to Mission, BC when Doreen was two. In 1943 Doreen married Alec “Pike” Cameron, son of Robert and Rita Cameron of Steelhead. Doreen and Pike had five children, but tragically three died young; infant son Kurt in 1960, daughter Suzan (Roberts) in 1984, and son Mark in 1997. Doreen was predeceased by her parents Bob & May Henderson, her in-laws Robert & Rita Cameron, son-in-law Sid Roberts, her brother Bill (“Rocky”) & his wife Mary, brothers Gordon (“Moose”), Jim, and Rayzy, her sister Margaret and brother-in-law Ken Shier, & brother-inlaw Art Fraser. Doreen is survived by her sisters Joyce Elliott and Wanda Fraser, brother David (Elizabeth) Henderson, & sister-in-law Armande Henderson. Also survived by son Sam (Wendy Turpin), daughter Marna LeVae, daughter-inlaw Terri, and God-daughter Debbie Murdoch. Grandchildren; Scott (Lynn) Cameron, Sherry (Ernie) Foisy, Neil Roberts, Clint Roberts, Paul Roberts, Ilana (Cary) Taylor, Curtis Cameron, Travis (Karla) Cameron, Matthew Cameron, Brodie May (Rebecca Brooks), Sienna LeVae (Shawn Pedersen). Great-Grandchildren; Kayla Cameron (Brian Rogers), Ilaya Cameron, Andrew Foisy, Megan Foisy, Devin Roberts, Ella Cameron, Lucy Cameron, Blaze Cameron, Helena May, Sofia May, Sicilia May, and Hayden May. Great-Great-Grandchildren; Tabitha and Victoria Rogers. Doreen was also a doting mother and grandmother figure to several generations of children in and around Steelhead, and she loved them all equally. Her ‘extra kids’ are many, but extra special to her were Pat “Doc” Murdoch, Melvyn Burden, Bob Isbell, Marie Donatelli, Rene Clark, and Gary Haseler. Both Pike and Doreen had wonderful senses of humour and used laughter and deep love to carry our family through significant tragedy and to celebrate our considerable blessings. Together as one entity, they modeled patience & resilience, showed humility and graciousness, taught responsibility and loyalty. They encouraged humour and optimism, and without fail shared their deep genuine love and pure joy. They were profoundly good people; we can honour their legacy by sharing small and simple kindnesses, laughing out loud, tending gardens, and messily sharing pie and whip cream with children. Our everlasting gratitude to the Steelhead community for keeping an eye on the feisty ol’ lady and helping her when she allowed. Many thanks also to Dr. Pomeroy for years of compassionate care & to the caring staff at Mission’s Royal Bank where Doreen banked for 50+ years, and also to the caring employees at Save-On-Foods, where she got herself five gallons of chocolate milk every 4 days! Doreen wanted to have a 90th Birthday party in March, and hoped the new Steelhead Hall would be completed so she could break it in. She didn’t quite make it, and the hall isn’t quite ready, but we’re going to get together nearby in Silverdale and celebrate the extraordinary woman she was. We’d love it if you would please join us! ON: SATURDAY, MARCH 7th 2~5pm AT: SILVERDALE HALL 8760 MCLEAN STREET, MISSION, BC

Margaret Elizabeth

Our beloved son Michael Donald Cooper aged 59 passed away on February 13, 2015 after his courageous battle of cancer. He is lovingly remembered by his parents Janet and Thomas Moskaluik; brothers Tom (Jane) and Wayne (Lani) as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A Memorial Tea will be held at Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home on Friday, February 27, 2015 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at:

(Nee Thompson) Feb. 21, 1926 ~ Feb. 7, 2015

Today the world is a sadder place. Margaret peacefully left this earth with her children’s love and devotion embedded in her heart after living bravely with cancer. She was the mother we all wanted, the daughter we all strive to be, and the friend who never gave up or never let you down. Margaret was the sunshine on her beloved home, and on her summer retreat in Kelowna. She was the light in so many lives and for almost 89 years, she was full of goodness and love. The void of her physical presence will be replaced by the strength of her loving spirit that will surround us always. Margaret is pre-deceased by her husband Hans. Margaret is survived by her four children; daughters Elizabeth, Anne (Kelly), Greta and son John (Maxine) who will carry her in their hearts forever. In addition, her grandchildren Melissa, Lauren, Alanna, Curtis, Derek, Kristina, Evan and Arielle will miss her greatly as will her extended family and friends. The family wishes to express its gratitude to all Margaret’s many wonderful, kind, thoughtful, trustworthy friends and family who supported her throughout her illness. We will never forget Margaret’s cheery, positive approach to life, her extraordinary memory, and sharp mind. Margaret worked for Correctional Services of Canada, plus she continued to give back to her community by volunteering for the Community Policing Office, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Citizen’s Advisory Committee for Correctional Services of Canada, the Mission Historical Society and the BC Gymnastics Association. Many deeply felt thanks to Dr. Nemanishen and Dr. Galbraith, as well as the nursing staff of Mission Memorial Hospital for the outstanding care they all provided. As per Margaret’s wishes, the funeral is private. If desired, as expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. STEGENGA Frank Frank Stegenga passed into the waiting arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 15, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a dedicated husband to Rose and loving father of Michaela (d. 2000), Trisha and Brittany. Survived by 1 brother and 4 sisters, their spouses, in-laws, many nieces and nephews. Frank was born on April 3, 1955 in Hagersville Ontario, moved to BC at the age of 20. He owned and operated Sundance Homes and was known for his integrity and workmanship. One of his greatest passions in life was helping people, always ready and willing to help anyone in need, even seeking out those who would benefit from his help. His passion for loving people came from his desire to be the hands and feet of Jesus. We would like to thank Dr. Turchen, Dr. Mitchinson, Dr. Zulfiqar, the many palliative care nurses and many other doctors during Frank’s 2½ year health journey. Service will be held at 7 Oaks Alliance Church on Monday, February 23, at 1:30 pm. If you have a picture of or with Frank, please bring it along to the service. In lieu of flowers, you are invited to make a donation to Youth Unlimited.

Alice (Akke) Vander Meulen of Abbotsford, BC, went to be with her Lord and Savior. She passed away after a brief illness on February 14, 2015, at the age of 80 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Alice was born in 1934 to Peter and Joukje Vander Schaaf in Wouterswoude, Friesland, a province of the Netherlands. In 1952, she and her large family immigrated to Canada and settled in Brampton, Ontario, near Toronto. In 1975, she, her former husband Stanley and her five children Judith (Harold Atsma), Anne O’Leary, Jacob, Ronald (Gini) and David immigrated to the Fraser Valley. She is being grieved as well by ten grandchildren who called her Beppe and fifteen great-grandchildren who knew her as GG, short for great-grandmother. She will also be missed by her five sisters and four brothers. Alice was a wonderful homemaker and expert in the seamstress and weavers trades. She was renowned for her fine textile craftwork, especially her beautiful quilts. She remained highly active in her community at Gateway Christian Reformed Church and several volunteer organizations where she was deeply beloved and will be sorely missed. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2015 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm and 7:00 - 8:00 pm at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road.
