Support Kimberley athletes Kimberley Nordic Club starts scholarship program to assist cross-country ski athletes C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
As many Kimberley residents are aware, there are two athletes, Colin Ferrie and Molly Miller, on Team BC at the Canada Games who hail from Kimberley. They both compete in cross-country skiing, and both could be considered to have a legitimate shot at medals. Cross country ski competition begins on Monday in Prince George. Any parent of a competitive athlete can tell you that while the athlete puts in hours of sweat in training, the family puts in a lot of support, both emotional and financial. The local Nordic Club is justifiably proud of Colin and Molly. They recognize the hard work and financial burden of producing a top level athlete and want to help other local kids who may be considering pursuing cross-country skiing. The Kimberley Nordic Club executive recently resolved to set up a bursary/scholarship for talented local cross-country youth. “As young cross-country skiers advance the costs are huge for training, equipment, travel and time away,” said Ross Banner of the Nordic Club. “It’s a lot for ski families to handle. The Kimberley Cross Country community has been very generous with Colin and Molly and the Club wanted to maintain the spirit of helping.” To perpetuate the Bursary the Club has commenced an ongoing program of selling Club items with logos, with the net proceeds going directly to the Bursary fund. The Club is selling water bottles $8, lanyards $2, fleece toques $20 and sport caps $20. The items can be purchased at the Nordic Club kiosk, in Kimberley at Togs, Kootenay Mountain Works and Bavarian Home Hardware. The Nordic Club invites all Kimberley residents to help this initiative by purchasing an item and show the Kimberley Nordic colours.

Ultra-marathon coming to Kimberley C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Could you run 50 k in 12 hours? 100 k in 24 hours? Most people would answer no, but a surprising number of people would say, ‘yes, I can’. These are the ultra-marathon runners, a group for whom a 42 k marathon is not enough. This August, ultra-marathoners will be in Kimberley to take part in a new race, the inaugural Black Spur Ultra. The course is set in three loops, which
all start and finish at the Kimberley Alpine Resort. Loop one takes the runner around North Star Mountain, the second out to Horse Barn Valley and the third through the Nature Park around Myrtle Mountain. “Don’t like loop courses? Wait until you see these trails before you say that!” - Blackspurultra.com The race is being put together by the Full Moon Adventure Company, out of Bellevue, Alberta, which has been creating successful endurance events since 2002. Brian Gallant of FMAC promises challeng-
ing terrain, epic scenery and a world-class venue to those who sign up for the Kimberley Black Spur Ultra. ““The Kimberley Alpine Resort is a natural choice for a mountain ultra because it has the perfect blend of natural beauty, rugged terrain and world-class amenities,” said race organizer Brian Gallant, owner of Full Moon Adventure Company (FMAC). “The community is genuinely friendly and welcoming with a spirit that embraces outdoor adventure.” See ULTRA, page 5

Grade 5 & 6 Students from Pinewood Elementary School celebrated their DARE Graduation on Monday, February 16 with Constable Lisa Schlatter of the Cranbrook RCMP. Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) is a comprehensive school-based drug prevention program taught by police officers to children at the Grade 5 level. The D.A.R.E. Officers partner with classroom teachers to build protective factors for children by providing information and social skills needed to live drug- and violence-free. Students are taught to use a four-step D.A.R.E decision-making model designed to help them engage in critical thinking, empowering them to make healthy choices and take charge of their lives. It provides them the skills to analyze each decision and evaluate their choices. The program is usually delivered over a 10-week period, and each lesson is presented in a fun and factual way, designed to maximize student participation using an interactive workbook.

Future of Cranbrook fire hall uncertain after council vote Arne Petryshen
At the budget meeting on Tuesday night, Feb. 17, Cranbrook city council voted to remove a plan to borrow $500,000 to retrofit Firehall No. 1. The item was a part of the schedule of capital expenditures. When the item of business came up Mayor Lee Pratt asked that the item be removed. The funds were planned to be used to repair the building so that it could be used in the future. CAO Wayne Staudt explained that the $500,000 was added to the five year plan a few years ago. “At that time, whether it was going to be the firehall building, or some other building, we weren’t quite sure at the time when we put it into the budget,” Staudt said. He added that it was meant to be there as potential matching funds to construct an arts council building. “Whether that was to buy a new building, whether that was to buy a building downtown and renovate it or whether that was going

Coun. Danielle Car-
dozo had concerns. She noted that at the prior budget meeting on Feb. 11, council asked city staff to come back with recommendations on what to do with the firehall. “So I find it really difficult to make a decision on this $500,000 without that recommendation,” Cardozo said. Pratt noted that what they sent back to staff was to look at the Cranbrook and District Arts Council presentation. “We were going to decide on that, we
hadn’t talked about the borrowing of the $500,000,” he said. Staudt said the two items were separate. “What staff is reviewing is the business plan that was presented to us from the arts council to come up with whether that is a viable business plan,” Staudt said. “And whether or not council wants to, based on that business plan, give the arts council exclusive use of the firehall — whether we give them use through a lease agreement or we just

give them the building — that’s what staff is currently reviewing.” Staudt noted that the other question being asked is: “On top of giving them the building, do you also want to borrow $500,000 to help them or anybody renovate the building?” Coun. Wes Graham wasted no time in putting forward a motion to remove the item. Coun. Ron Popoff was on the same page as Coun. Cardozo. “It does tie into what is the future expected use of the firehall in relations to the arts council,” Popoff said. “I believe there is also going to be recommendation coming back from staff on what is the ultimate recommendation for the use of Firehall No. 1?” Popoff said those recommendations could be anything from locking the building down and making it safe and secure for a future time, to leasing it out to a non-profit or for-profit organization, to selling it. Popoff said he wanted to find out what the cost of at least making the building safe and secure would be. Coun. Tom Shypitka said his worry is that the $500,000 is just the “tipof-the-iceberg” in the expense to get the firehall to where it needs to be. “I’m afraid that we’re

going to get ourselves deep in something that we’re not going to be able to get out of down the road,” he said. Staudt also pointed out that the firehall’s roof is fine and is only a few years old, it is the trusses that need to be shored up. “I don’t expect that will be a big bill,” he said. “We should do some minor things over there to correct some of the things over there. It might be $20,000 or $30,000.” Graham said he is not in favour of borrowing and if they need to find the money by way of efficiencies. “I’m definitely not in favour of borrowing,” he said, “and tax for it then, rather than borrow.” Pratt said the reason he is not in favour of borrowing the $500,000 is that he believes council should not be in the real estate business. “Personally I can’t justify borrowing $500,000 on a building to do whatever we’re going to do with it — and we don’t even know what we’re going to do with it,” Pratt said. “We have a number of situations that the taxpayers are paying every year to maintain them.” Pratt said he doesn’t believe the arts council will be able to support itself in that building. “Down the road they’re going to be coming to us with their hand

out,” he said. “So that’s the reason I’m against borrowing the money.” He said staff may come back and recommend that council entertain an agreement with the arts council to sell it, or rather to just sit on the building. Popoff wanted clarification that council could look at borrowing in the future if need be. “If a recommendation comes back looking viable and attractive we certainly have that option at that time,” Pratt said. Coun. Isaac Hockley said he sees the building as a liability for the city. “I’m a photographer, I do want to support the arts, but I think going down the road in a couple years... that this would end up hurting them rather than doing any good for them,” Hockley said. “They come up with a number of $500,000. You look at the business plan that says, like you say mayor, next year it’s going to be a couple hundred thousand dollars more. Then the year after that it could be $300,000 to 500,000 again.” Cardozo said her concern isn’t with the arts council, but rather with the building itself, as it does have heritage status and the city is required to keep it to a certain standard. She asked whether there was money somewhere else to get the building to that standard, as opposed to borrowing. “But if the recommendation is to keep the building, it’s better to fix it sooner than later, because if the trusses go that’s going to cost more money in the long run,” Cardozo said. “It is a city asset. It is a liability.” Everyone voted in favour of removing the item.

YVR operations ripple Grants available for across the province projects benefitting youth TRE VOR CR AWLEY
Though Vancouver is a day’s drive away from Cranbrook, that distance turns into a stones throw when you factor in the Canadian Rockies International Airport. With that in mind, a representative from the Vancouver Airport Authority delivered a keynote address to members of the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce to tout the importance of relationships between YVR and airports around the rest of the province. “YVR and Cranbrook have a lot in common if you think about it,” said Steve Michoulas, director of legal services for the Vancouver Airport Authority. “We’re both important hubs. As hub for mining, forestry, agriculture, manufacturing and transportation with the newly expanded international airport, Cranbrook’s location is at the epicentre of economic opportunities, connecting the various regions and economies of B.C. “Like Cranbrook, YVR is a gateway hub in it’s own way…While we both have the advantage of lucky geography, we recognize that it is critical to find other opportunities for growth and development.” In terms of passenger traffic at YVR facilities, it was a record year in 2014, which saw 19 million passengers, an increase of one million from the year before. On average, on a busy August day, that means 70,000 people with 90,000 bags. “As we climb to the top of our size category and surpass our 20 mil-
lion passenger mark, we’re going to have to keep up this level of achievement,” Michoulas said, “because YVR will not only be competing bigger airports…but will also be competing for passengers, market share, growths and jobs all of which will also help the businesses and people in Cranbrook.” Michoulas used the agriculture industry in the Okanagan as a powerful example of how YVR helps in generating economic activity outside Vancouver. “The airport plays a key role in the supply chain that connects B.C. fruit to global markets,” Michoulas said. “In fact, the B.C. cherry leaves the tree first thing in the morning and arrives on a table in Hong Kong the next day. “From tree to table in 24 hours.” That economic activity generated $10 million last year, and is expected to double this year, he added. “And what about Cranbrook? What opportunities exist here that can follow a similar path?” asked Michoulas. Before taking the podium, local representatives from the Canadian Rockies International Airport gave a quick update on their own operations. Krystal Porter, the financial administrator for YXC, noted that passengers totalled just shy of 129,000—which is an increase of 10 per cent over 2013—and are trending upward. Jamie Roche, Superintendent of Operations noted that because of the increase in passenger traffic, there are

Just like YVR operations, Roche noted that the airport receives no federal funding or subsidies from local municipal governments. “One thing that people often don’t realize when I talk to them is that the City of Cranbrook is able to have that current capacity at the airport without the use of any municipal tax dollars,” Roche said. “All the expenses associated
with the airport, which there are a lot of, are offset and covered by revenues brought in by our operations. “The taxpayer in Cranbrook has this perfect asset for no cost on an annual basis with the added benefit that the asset is a significant economic generator.” Roche reported that there are roughly 80 people who work at the airport and are employed by 13 separate businesses.

Lent: A time to go deeper
T
he church has begun marking Lent. It began on Wednesday, which is known as Ash Wednesday. The season of Lent is 40 days long. Forty is one of those important symbolic numbers in the Bible. In the flood, it rained for 40 days and nights. Israel wandered 40 years in the wilderness before entering the promised land. Moses fasted 40 days before receiving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the wilderness, preparing for his ministry. There are many Biblical numbers which mean more than the literal. The most familiar example is the number 7, which has to do with perfection or wholeness. In the same kind of way, 40 seems to be a number which has to do with being long enough for the purposes to be accomplished. Forty days is long enough to accomplish the work of Lent. If you were to count the days on a calendar, however, you’d find that there are actually 46 days from Ash Wednesday. That’s because the Sundays that fall in this season aren’t counted in the 40 days. The church has always understood Sunday to be the day of resurrection. Sunday is not a day of mourning and repentance. Sunday is intended to be a day of feasting and celebration, a day of being nourished with God’s goodness. When Lent was first celebrated, it was intended that the faithful would use the weekdays for repentance and fasting. It was intended to be a daily walk with God, journeying more deeply to the heart of our faith. Sundays, then, would be a break from that penitent daily walk. On Sundays, people would be given a break. Sundays were a day celebrate God’s goodness and
rest in the warmth of God’s grace. Nowadays, that pattern has changed. People pay less attention to the Lent discipline in their day–to–day lives during the week. Sundays have become the focus of Lenten devotion for many people. So what is the purpose of Lent? In the early church, Lent was the culmination of a time of preparing for baptism. During Lent, candidates for baptism would examine themselves, and be by others, as to Rev. Yme examined their understanding of what Woensdregt it meant to be a follower of Jesus Christ. For those who had already been baptized, it was a time to make a fresh commitment to walking in the way of Jesus. Part of what this means is that in baptism, we are included in the community of Christ. We are part of a new people. We belong not to this world, but to God. As people who belong to God, we strive to honour God’s values in our world. We are people who cherish justice, peace, reconciliation and wholeness. We live in such a way as to honour God in all our dealings. As we have been blessed, so we bless others. As we have been healed, so we touch other lives as gently as we can. As we have been included by God’s grace in a community of hope and reconciliation, so we reach out across all the barriers which keep us apart. We live in the world as people who embody God’s gospel purposes with all of God’s beloved children. In this context, repentance has to do with the renewal of the heart. Contrary to popular conception, repentance is not so much about feeling sorry for all the wrong we have done. It is a more positive movement than that. Repentance is about re-
newing our commitment to God’s ways in the world. Let me quote Archbishop Rowan Williams: “Repentance happens when you suddenly see the abundance of God’s love and generosity in someone else and you come to the realization that you must change. Not only must you, you want to.” As we repent, we learn to listen in a new way for the whisper of God in our lives and in our world. We are spiritual beings. To nourish our spiritual life is as important to us as food and water are for nourishing our physical life. God comes to us in countless ways, again and again, whispering a word of life into our lives, nudging us to see things from a new perspective, prodding us to be renewed in our hearts. This vital truth is central to all the great religions of the world. They all call us to wholeness and holiness. They all whisper to us of renewal and hope. In the church, Lent is a time in which Christians go deeper to the heart of our faith. We respond to God’s call to come home. We take small, faltering steps as we yield ourselves to God’s healing embrace. So, while Lent is a serious and solemn moment in our lives, it need not be gloomy or depressing. We are being called home. We are being graciously invited to return to the heart of God. We are being embraced by God’s love. We are being healed by God’s insistent Spirit — healed in our personal lives and healed in our communities. So come again on this journey to the heart of our faith. Come, follow the one who promises us that above all else, we will find rest and healing. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Jim Cameron Gold — it’s out there for the taking, in the creeks, in the rocks, in the hills, the mother of all mother lodes just waiting to be found. Countless writers tell of lost nuggets, lost mines, lost fortunes. Some tell of one in particular, a story that has made the rounds for generations: the legends of the Lost Lemon Mine. And legends it is, for there is more than one variation of this tale of gold, murder, insanity, lies and bewilderment. So kids, pull up a stump, pop a soda and let this all-in-one tale wash over your pan. In the year 1870, or thereabouts, there was a man named Frank Lemmon, or perhaps Jack Lemon or Bill Lemon (best to simply call him Lemon), a tall, short man of average height with a foul temper. He and his partner Old George, or Blackjack (which may have been a nickname for a man named McGowan, or was, perhaps, Lemon’s real name, thus making him his own partner) who, it is said, discovered the gold that began the Cariboo Gold Rush — anyway Lemon and someone were travelling with a prospecting party headed to the North Saskatchewan River in Alberta when they decided to break away from the group and head towards an unknown pass in the Rocky Mountains to look for gold at Wild Horse Creek, long after the gold rush there was over. While travelling they found gold on a ledge or in the water or in the ground somewhere in the Crowsnest Pass, south of Morley on the Highwood River, 100 miles west of Fort McLeod not far from Bowden, west of the Red Lodge Provincial Park, north of Coleman in the Livingstone Mountain Range near the headwaters of Clearwater River on the far side of Sparwood. Eureka! That evening Lemon and his partner had a disagreement over what to do. Should they stay and mine the gold, thereby risking their lives in the oncoming winter or leave and return in the spring? They finally simply bedded down for the night at which point Lemon or Blackjack stealthily crept up upon his sleeping and obviously over-trusting partner Old
ONGOING
X marks the spot of the exact location of the fabled Lost Lemon Mine – source unknown George-McGowan-Blackjack and struck a fatal blow. This was observed by two Blackfoot Indians named Bowden, or a whole lot of unnamed braves led by Chief Bearspaw from the Crow Nation, of the Stoney Tribe of the Blackfoot people. Lemon, unaware of their presence, became panicked at his actions and, seeking to remain anonymous, lit a huge fire and began pacing relentlessly, waiting for morning to come. The Indians, witnessing the murder, cursed Lemon and the area and the deed and just for fun — even though the Blackfoot normally preferred killing white interlopers — began making scary noises which drove Lemon reasonably insane. In the morning, Lemon, leaving behind the single body of up to the three different men, rode to Pincher Creek or Montana or Tobacco Plains, stopping briefly along the way to bury the gold he failed to take with him somewhere between Dutch Creek and The Gap. Soon afterwards he told his story to a bogus priest named L’Heaureax. Although Lemon apparently gave up prospecting, the priest certainly didn’t and the following year he mounted an expedition based on the guidance of John McDougall, a tall, short man of average height
who had been sent out by someone to magically find and bury Old Black George McGowan. Sadly, as Father L’Heaureax’s prospecting party waited at a lake somewhere in Alberta, McDougall got so drunk on rotgut whiskey somewhere in Montana that he died, taking his knowledge of the location of the gold with him. It further transpires that Lemon was grubstaked by Lafayette French, who somehow learned of the gold and began a search of his own which lasted precisely the rest of his life, because when he finally found the gold he immediately died from a cabin fire, living just long enough to fail to share his discovery with anyone. Lemon, on the other hand, headed down to Texas, but showed up north from time to time leading expeditions to find the lost gold. The re-discovery never happened due to Lemon’s propensity to become manically deranged as he got closer to the spot, a sort of oldschool GPS that his fellow travelers failed to utilize. Thus the Lost Lemon Mine remains lost. Unless of course we run with the closer-tohome-version which finds Lemon showing up at Fort Steele around 1886 with a bullet wound in his leg and immediately reporting to the local North West Mounted Police

detachment that Indians had shot his partner Blackjack — or possibly McGowan. Lemon then headed for Montana. But Blackjack was not dead. Blackjack McGowan, thinking Lemon was killed, headed for San Francisco where, while dying, he showed a map of the gold strike to a man named McIver. McIver, using the treasure map (or possibly a globe) as a guide, make his way to Fort Steele and then to Finlay Creek, where he began working for someone else. One day a sympathetic surveyor studied the map and pinpointed the exact location. It turned out not to be a mine or a river but rather a cabin where Lemon and Blackjack hid their gold beneath the floorboards. This led some to the conclusion that there never was a mine but rather that Lemon and heaven knows who else simply bushwhacked miners on the trail, killed them and took their gold. Although no remains of the cabin exist it is said to be somewhere within a 15 mile radius of Fort Steele, which brings us to the best part: the Lost Lemon Mine, or at least an impressive pile of gold, may be in your own backyard. Just follow the map and look for the signs. It’s out there, that much is certain. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

Ice & Oil Kings set for wild-card war at Western Financial Place Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
The last time the Kootenay Ice and Edmonton Oil Kings met, forward Tim Bozon took matters into his own hands, registering a hattrick to power his team to a 5-3 victory Jan. 22. Prior to his twine-tickling outburst against the Oil Kings, the native of Valbonne, France, was fighting the puck, only registering two goals in his team’s previous 15 outings. Including his threegoal outburst against the Oil Kings, Bozon has fired home 12 goals in his past 12 games. Through that 12-game stretch, he’s accounted for 26.7 per cent of all the goals scored by the Kootenay Ice (12 of 45 goals). “Maybe I shoot the puck a little bit more and I think less,” Bozon said Thursday afternoon in regards to his recent hot run. “Sometimes I was thinking too much about whether I have to shoot or not. “When Montreal Canadiens [scouts] were here a couple weeks ago, they told me that every time I’m in the slot I have to shoot the puck. That’s where I try to focus to keep it sim-

ple. Sometimes I try to make more plays than I should have. It works pretty good. “It’s a roller coaster with me during this season.” Despite the ups and downs, the third-round selection (64th overall, 2012) of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens leads the Kootenay Ice with 26 goals in 43 games this season. Heading into Friday’s contest with the Edmonton Oil Kings, he is third on the team scoring chart with 51 points, trailing forwards Jaedon Descheneau (25-42-67) and Luke Philp (23-39-62). Bozon’s spec-
trum-stretching streaks don’t represent the lone roller-coaster rides in Cranbrook these days. The Kootenay Ice have been a baffling puzzle to this point in the WHL regular season. Last Wednesday, they handed the Central Division-leading Medicine Hat Tigers a resounding 6-3 loss before following up by dropping back-to-back games to teams well below them in the WHL’s Eastern Conference -- a 5-1 loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors and 5-4 overtime defeat to the rebuilding Saskatoon Blades. “Friday against Ed-

The French forward has 12 goals in his last 12 games. monton is huge for that first wild-card spot,” Bozon said. “I don’t know if we only play good against the good teams and bad against the bad teams. Maybe it’s motivation. I can’t tell you that. I don’t know. It’s not up to me to answer. So far we’ve shown we can beat everybody, but we can also lose against everybody. Now it’s going to be about consistency for the last 14 games.” Consistency has been a hot word in the bowels of Western Financial Place all season long. With veteran players such as Bozon, captain Sam Reinhart and alternates Jaedon Descheneau, Luke Philp, Rinat Valiev and Austin Vetterl, there’s plenty of leadership and experience to go around as this squad searches for consistent effort. “I don’t say too much in the dressing room. I don’t talk too much. I try to let my play do the talking,” Bozon said. “It’s tough. Obviously you want to lead this team and you want to be the guy people follow. But for me it’s all on the ice. If I play good, the guys
see that he is 20 years old, he has a [NHL] contract, but he is still working hard and still wants to win. I guess I let that do the talking on the ice. “I want to keep doing like I’ve been doing the last two weeks. Hopefully the young guys and everybody else can follow up.” Ice forward Matt Alfaro, 18, found a way to follow up this past week, registering two goals and an assist in Tuesday’s 5-2 road victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Following the 5-1 loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors, the forward combinations were thrown into a hat and mixed up from top to bottom, seeing Alfaro lineup alongside fresh faces. “You need to find chemistry again because you’re playing with new guys,” Alfaro said. “You need to just resort to doing the little things right and go from there.” Alfaro’s two-goal performance in Lethbridge came down low in the dirty areas around the crease and he’s hoping to do more of that moving forward. “I probably could have had a couple more
goals last game if I stopped at the net,” Alfaro said. “Gilly [head coach Ryan McGill] reminded me that in the first period, so I learned from that. It’s really just being consistent and doing the little things around the net.” Little things around the net will be required if the Kootenay Ice are to find a way to put pucks past Oil Kings goaltender Tristan Jarry. In 45 games between the pipes this season, the second-round selection (44th overall, 2013) of the Pittsburgh Penguins has backstopped the Oil Kings with a 2.66 goalsagainst average (fourth in the WHL). “Jarry is a really good goalie, but they also have a really good defence in front of him,” Bozon said. “If you look, they don’t score a lot of goals, but they don’t allow a lot of goals. I think they’re one of the best defence in the league. It’s tough to score goals against them. “Put a lot of pucks on net, capitalize on your chances and go in front of the net.” The Oil Kings rank first in goals against in the WHL’s Eastern Con-
ference heading into Friday night, having only allowed 162 pucks to cross the goal-line. The Calgary Hitmen sit a close second with 163 goals against, while the third-place Brandon Wheat Kings and Medicine Hat Tigers sit a far cry away, each with 179 goals against. The Ice remain two points up on the Oil Kings for the first wildcard slot in the WHL’s Eastern Conference, so the importance of this game can’t be underscored for either squad. “Two points -- really, that’s the biggest focus,” Alfaro said. “We’re going to take one game at a time for the rest of the season. “We know Jarry is a good goalie. We’ve got to get lots of shots, get in front of him, stop at the net and also shut down their top line and play hard defensively.” Friday also represents Pink the Rink Anti-Bullying Night at Western Financial Place. Fans are encouraged to show support by wearing pink attire. Puck drop between the Oil Kings and Ice is slated for 7 p.m.
CFL’s Roughriders bring back QB Kevin Glenn CANADIAN PRESS
REGINA - Kevin Glenn is back with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The veteran quarterback signed with the Riders as a free agent Thursday. Glenn, 35, began his CFL career with Saskatchewan in 2001 and spent three seasons with the club. Glenn started 17 regular-season games last season with the B.C. Lions. He completed 302-of-479 passes
(63 per cent) and was the league’s second-leading passer with 3,918 yards while adding 17 TD strikes. He is expected to provide a veteran insurance policy behind incumbent Darian Durant, who missed much of last season with an elbow injury. Glenn has played in 222 career CFL games with Saskatchewan, Winnipeg (2004-08), Hamilton (2009-11), Calgary (2012-13) and B.C. (2014). He’s eighth all-time in passing yards (43,336) and 10th in TDs (238).

The Cranbrook Atom B Royals snagged first place last weekend in the Golden Atom Rockets Tournament. The Royals went undefeated through four games facing teams from Banff, St. Albert, Bow Valley and Invermere to advance to the gold medal game. The Royals have a few exhibition games left in the season as they prepare for the Banner Tournament in early March.

MOOSE JAW, Sask. Alberta’s Val Sweeting scored two in the last end for a dramatic 7-6 victory over Canada’s Rachel Homan on Thursday to remain unbeaten at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Sweeting hit a clutch runback with her final stone to improve to 9-0 at the women’s national curling championship. “It wasn’t the best throw, I’m not going to lie,” she said. “It was a little crafty. But the girls held it so well and they’re just such good sweepers that I knew it’d be close.” The victory in the rematch of last year’s Scotties final gave Sweeting a berth in the one-two Page Playoff game Friday night against Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones, who locked up her spot with a pair of victories. “We just have to stay strong now,” Sweeting said. “Momentum is good going into the playoffs. We just want to finish strong and hopefully just come out on top.” Sweeting and Jones (9-1) will play twice on Friday. They’ll meet in the round-robin finale in the morning with the winner to earn the first seed. Homan, the two-time defending champion, fell to 6-3 with the loss. The Ottawa skip was tied in third place with Saskatchewan’s Stefanie Lawton, who dumped New Brunswick’s Sylvie Robichaud 9-4. The winner of the Scotties will represent Canada at the March 14-22 world women’s curling championship in Sapporo, Japan.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) The planets will encourage you to return to the friendly yet direct Aries who everyone knows and likes. You feel most comfortable when you’re being straightforward. A conversation with someone at a distance could have you rethinking a matter. Tonight: Out and about. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’ll want to express what is on your mind, but a certain vulnerability could stop you. Understand that you will miss an opportunity if you are not clear. On the other hand, you might be more content keeping your feelings to yourself. Tonight: Vanish. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You are more visible than you realize. Wherever you go, you make a strong impression. Some people will instantly trust you, whereas others can’t seem to get away from you quick enough. Stay where you are best accepted. Tonight: Where your friends are.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You might feel as if you are on top of a problem. However, someone else could tell you in no uncertain terms that he or she thinks you are on the wrong path. Listen to this person’s comments and slow down. Ask others for their feedback. Tonight: Take the lead. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Your fiery ways add flair to whatever you do, especially this afternoon. Know that the dramatic way in which you present yourself will have an effect on others. Today you will be able to see beyond the here and now when making an important choice. Tonight: TGIF! VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You could feel guilty for not having met a partner halfway. As uncomfortable as it might be, take advantage of an opportunity to clear the air. This person has a very strong sense of what he or she wants and expects from you. Tonight: Join friends to welcome the weekend. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Tundra
You know that you need to have an important conversation. If you don’t move quickly, the other party will be the one to initiate this chat. Listen to how much this person has to offer and pay attention to how composed he or she is. Tonight: The only answer is “yes.” SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Your mind is likely to drift to different thoughts. By midafternoon, you’ll realize what you need to do. What you can accomplish could be beyond what you originally had thought. Eliminate all your internal chatter, and you’ll have much more free time. Tonight: Join a friend. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your fiery personality is likely to take a back seat, as you have been practicing self-discipline as of late. A child or loved one’s actions will make you smile and encourage you to go with the flow. Do yourself a favor and don’t overthink it. Tonight: Be a little wild. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You could find that your interest now points you in the direction
of security, real estate and your domestic life. You might try to calm down or mitigate a disagreement. Know that there are deep feelings on both sides about the matter at hand. Tonight: Try something cozy. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ll be direct with others. Be careful, as you could be met with a very powerful response. How you see what is going on might change as a result of an intense conversation. Do not push others away just because you are angry right now. Tonight: Hang out. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Weigh the pros and cons of a financial agreement. You might be pushed to commit before you are ready. Ask questions and talk to someone who has been in a similar situation before agreeing to anything. Tonight: Treat a friend to munchies. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I’m in my early 50s, single again after a long 20-year relationship that should have ended sooner. A year ago, I met a guy I really like, and we’ve been seeing each other seriously since. “Bill” has about a dozen close female friends. He does things like buy them bras and brags that he knows all of their sizes. It hasn’t been a deal breaker because I’ve met most of them, and they really are just friends. However, it bugs me that we’ll make plans to spend a quiet afternoon together, and then one of these girlfriends will text him, and instead of telling me about it or asking me first, Bill will meet up with her (and often her girlfriends), and the next thing you know, I’m stuck sharing him with a bunch of women. Also, with two of these women, he doesn’t tell me he has seen them until after the fact. Last weekend, he got us tickets to a golf game. I knew he wanted to take a male friend, so I gave up my ticket. It turns out, he had four tickets and took the friend along with two girls. He didn’t even offer to tell me he had extra tickets. When Bill is out with these women, he avoids my calls. He buys them drinks and either lies about it or just doesn’t mention it. He says it’s not cheating if he doesn’t sleep with them. He continues to do this even though I’ve said it seems disrespectful to our relationship. Am I being unreasonable or just gullible? I’m still in great shape and have had many other offers. I’m ready to settle down in a meaningful relationship, and this is like high school. Thoughts? -- Tired of Sharing Dear Tired: What are you doing with this immature man-child? Do you seriously think he is going to give up his little harem for you? He is not. It’s time to move on. Dear Annie: My husband and I are close friends with “John and Mary.” John continues to spend money on “toys” he feels he “needs” without Mary’s knowledge. We know this because he shares the information with my husband and shows him the things he has purchased. John has incurred a great deal of debt, and Mary hasn’t a clue because John controls all of the finances. Meanwhile, he gets upset with how much she spends on groceries, gas or household furniture. My husband and I consider honesty to be a cornerstone of our marriage. It makes us sick that John is not being honest with his wife. We’ve already encouraged John to tell Mary the truth, and he hasn’t. So do we tell her, or do we just stay out of their business? -- Honest BFFs Dear Honest: Hard as it may be, you need to stay out of this, and your husband should not be admiring John’s “toys.” You can explain to John that Mary will eventually find out and the consequences will be compounded by his lying. He is better off working with her than against her. She could be a supportive partner. You also can suggest he contact Debtors Anonymous (debtorsanonymous.org) for help. Dear Annie: This is a response to “Frustrated,” the 67-year-old widow who misses sex and wants to know whether masturbation is still a mortal sin. As one who was raised a Catholic, I find it difficult to believe that a merciful God, and I believe He is, would condemn those who commit the “sin” of masturbation to an eternity in Hell along with serial killers and mass murderers. If that is the case, that widow will have an awful lot of company there. -- A Believer Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Obituaries Hazel Marian Conroy “Marianâ€? 1928 – 2015 The family of Hazel Marian Conroy are comforted to announce that our Mother, Grandmother, and GreatGrandmother is now in the presence of her Savior and reunited with past love ones. Mom passed on just before sunrise on Wednesday, February 11, 2015, surrounded by her family.
Mom was born in Lethbridge, AB on December 1, 1928 to Hazel and Orland Keiver. When mom was 5, together with her older brother, Richard, the family moved to Kimberley and then on to Cranbrook, as her father was employed as a conductor with CP Rail. It was in Cranbrook that mom received her schooling and grew up. In 1949 she married the boy next door, Elmer Conroy. Together they welcomed 7 children into the world. Though mom’s days were busy raising a large family she maintained a spotless home, always had fresh baking, and welcomed anyone that came through her door to join the family for a meal. Throughout the years mom enjoyed watching her family grow and loved being a part of the lives of her many grandchildren. Mom was greatly loved by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, all of them ever jostling to be the one to sit beside her and be the benefactor of her famously popular tickling or simple stroke on their arm. Mom loved easily and unconditionally. Her strong family values together with her lovingly supportive nature was a base of strength for each of her children and grandchildren through life’s ups and downs. The majority of mom’s life was spent in Cranbrook where she continued to impact the lives of those in her family, church and neighbourhood with her love, faith, and ever ready willingness to help those in need. Throughout her life, her deeply compassionate nature was displayed in the many loaves, muffins, cookies and cakes she lovingly baked for others. She had a quick and humorous wit, and a welcoming spirit and people always felt at home around her. She was a woman of faith, and you never left her presence without a prayer or blessing. Mom moved from Cranbrook to Kamloops in 2011 where she was welcomed by two of her daughters and their families. She initially resided at Berwick on the Park, and then more recently at Ridgeview Lodge. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Elmer in 1999, and brother Richard in 1993. She is survived by her children: Robert (Penny) Conroy, Richard (Catherine) Conroy, Susan (Ron) Olynyk, Joanne (John) Young, Garry (Jacqui) Conroy, Diane (Gordon) Mamen, Shannon (Greg) Nash; as well as 17 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Mom’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 2:00 pm at McPherson Funeral Home (2200 2nd Street South) in Cranbrook with Pastor Ron Short officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Wings as Eagles Ministry, 3331 - 21st Street North, Cranbrook, BC,  V1C 6E5. The family would like to thank Dr. Bantock and the staff at Ridgeview Lodge for the outstanding care and love given to Marian. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Vanity of canine variety credited for B.C. beagle winning best in show
ENDERBY, B.C. - Steak at a Manhattan celebrity haunt, invitations to bark on TV talk shows and a chance to rub noses with Donald Trump. A pooch from small-town British Columbia is getting thrown more than a bone for winning best in show at the most prestigious championships for dogs in the United States. Miss P, a four-year-old beagle born in the Interior city of Enderby, was named top dog on Tuesday at the Westminster Kennel Club’s annual show in New York. “We’re going to immediately change our name to Ender-beagle,” Canadian Press

joked the Mayor of Enderby, Greg McCune, the next day. Crowning the canine “Fire Hall Dog of the Day” or “Mayor for a Day” are the honours being considered, as well as a spot on the front float during the community’s Canada Day parade. “It’s the talk of the town at the moment, tonnes of interest globally,” said McCune, listing off the congratulatory calls. “Everyone’s having a pretty good time with it.” Miss P’s breeder and part owners, Lori Crandlemire and daughter Kaitlyn, said they’re excited but overwhelmed by the attention.
