The West Kootenay Advertiser begins a seven-part series on child and youth mental health issues.

PART THREE OF SEVEN

When it is more than anxiety and depression: Bipolar disorder and Schizophrenia MENTAL HEALTH

BY DR. DAVID SMITH Last week we talked about the stresses teenagers face as they transition to adulthood. Adding to that challenging journey, which all teens must make, is the fact that 75 per cent of all mental health conditions show up in the teen and early adult years. Today we talk about bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, which tend to first show their signs and symptoms between the ages of 13 and 25. As noted last week, and in all the columns to date: If you are worried that your child or teen may be showing signs of a mental illness, talk to your family doctor, or contact the Child and Youth Mental Health program provided by the Ministry of Children and Family Development in your region. Call Service BC at 1-800-661-8773 for the MCFD office nearest to you. Bipolar: Originally called manic-depression, bipolar disorder is marked by extreme

shifts in mood, energy and activity levels, ranging from severe depression on one side to mania on the other. During a manic episode, the youth will be highly talkative, energetic, full of ideas and enthusiasms, may take risks or behave impulsively, and may even become jittery, sleepless and irritable. During a depressive episode, the youth is very tired or feels slowed down, is very sad and hopeless, has a hard time concentrating or making decisions, and may also be restless or irritable. Different types of bipolar disorder have different extremes in moods and different speeds of cycling between them, but most high or low episodes last several days or longer. Sometimes the extremes in moods can bring on psychosis — losing touch with reality and having hallucinations (hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, or feeling things that are not actually there) and delusions (a strong, illogical belief, such as feeling one’s actions are being controlled by others.) Early psychosis intervention, called EPI, is very successful. An EPI program exists in many communities in each health authority in BC, see earlypsychosis.ca. Bipolar disorder is known to run in families, but most individuals who have a family member with the disorder will never develop this condition — some other trigger is often needed and research is not yet clear what that is. Many famous and highly successful individuals have bipolar disorder, in part because the manic phase can produce extreme creativity and productivity. Yet the disorder can cause havoc with family relationships, jobs and finances. Substance use, particularly excessive alcohol consumption, is com-

mon with the disorder, especially during a manic phase. Significant mood changes can be stabilized with various medications, or their combinations, plus different types of psychotherapy. With long-term treatment productive lives can be lived. Attention to good sleep, healthy diet and exercise, regular routines, and avoidance of mind-altering substances, along with medication and therapy, can minimize the number of mood episodes. For more information see Mood Disorders Association of BC, mdabc.net; and heretohelp.bc.ca; Schizophrenia: Perhaps no mental health diagnosis causes parents and youth more fear than schizophrenia, which is marked by losing touch with reality and experiencing hallucination, delusions, disorganization and cognitive impairment, such as poor judgement and decision-making. But the outlook need not be bleak: treatment works, and recovery and a return to good functioning occurs regularly. About one per cent of all British Columbians have this illness and it affects men and women equally, but first symptoms often appear for men between ages 16 and 20, and women between ages 20 and 30. While schizophrenia also runs in families, it usually needs more than just genetics to arise, although exactly what else triggers it is not fully known. Sometimes it occurs in individuals with no family history, perhaps as a result of a subtle or past brain injury. In the last decade, new antipsychotic medication and the introduction of Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) programs, noted above, are greatly helping newly di-

agnosed people with schizophrenia. Like bipolar disorder, along with the right combination of medication, good sleep, healthy diets, regular exercise, established routines and avoiding mind-altering substances will help those with the diagnosis live full and productive lives. In fact, dynamic and well-spoken individuals like BC’s Brent Seal, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia while a university student and now runs a company called “Seal Wellness” are helping change the face of schizophrenia. Seal, a mountain climber, ultra-marathoner, wellness coach and inspirational speaker, as well as others who are thriving after a schizophrenia diagnosis, show that good, meaningful lives are possible with the right treatment. For more information about schizophrenia in BC see earlypsychosis.ca; mindcheck. ca; the BC Schizophrenia Society, bcss.org; and the Canadian Mental Health Association BC chapter, cmha.bc.ca.

Dr. David Smith is an adolescent and adult psychiatrist and the medical director of the Okanagan Psychiatric services for Interior Health. This series of columns on common child and youth mental health issues is a project of the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substances Use Collaborative. The Collaborative involves multiple individuals, organizations and ministries all working together to increase the number of children, youth, and their families receiving timely access to mental health services and support in the Interior Health and Vancouver Island regions. The Collaborative is jointly funded by Doctors of BC and the government of BC.

Early intervention improves bipolar diagnosis LIZ BEVAN West Kootenay Advertiser

Bipolar disorder is a life long struggle for people who have been diagnosed, but what about the signs leading up to a diagnosis? The Kootenay Boundary region has plenty of resources available to residents that could detect bipolar disorder early and lead to effective and sustained treatment. The disorder tends to show up in patients in their late teens or early into the years of adulthood, but symptoms can show up sooner than that. Changes in sleep schedules, loss of energy, difficulty concentrating, odd ideas, slowed or sped up thoughts, mood swings, and feelings of suspiciousness are just a few

of the signs of a psychotic episode or disorder. Randy Thiessen, team leader for Trail and Castlegar Mental Health and Substance Use with Interior Health (IH), says the first thing anyone should do when they have questions about symptoms is to go to their family doctor. “The short answer is, go to your general practitioner (GP),” he said in an email. Once a doctor’s appointment is set up, the doctor will first look for a family history of mental disorders or suicides. Some mental health issues, like bipolar and schizophrenia, will be more prevalent if parents have struggled with the same thing. After a family history is recorded, doctors should look at changes in behavioural patterns in the pa-

tient. Bipolar disorder is marked by bouts of mania, or a highly elevated mood, followed by a severe depressive episode, usually lasting days or weeks. These episodes can also lead to psychosis — a detachment from reality with visual and auditory hallucinations. From there, a family doctor is able to give a referral to a mental health professional in the community. Early intervention is the golden ticket when dealing with mental health issues, like bipolar disorder, in youth. It has been shown that early treatment leads to less suicides, a preservation of social skills and supports, a faster recovery and less need for a stay at the hospital. Through IH, the province pro-

vides the Early Psychosis Initiative (EPI) hoping to catch mental health issues early on, leading

to more comprehensive care for youth who have received a diagnosis, or for those who are wondering about their mental health. It has been estimated that 80 per cent of patients who experience psychosis, whether from bipolar or even schizophrenia, first experience the phenomenon between the ages of 18 and 30. The longer a patient goes without treatment, the more difficult it is to tackle the disorder. While every patient is unique, waiting can also limit the effectiveness of proven treatments. To find out more information about the province’s EPI program, or to take a look at resources available to people who are dealing with mental health issues and their families, visit www.earlypsychosis. ca, www.gpscbc.ca or www.heretohelp.bc.ca.

Head for the (place called) Hills GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser

Eighty-seventh in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names The Slocan Valley community now known as Hills is an unofficial amalgamation of four separate places. The oldest portion was Bonanza City, a townsite at the north end of Slocan Lake. It appears on Perry’s Mining Map of 1893 and is first mentioned in an ad in The Ledge of Oct. 19, 1893 for the Bonanza City Hotel, operated by John Madden. In June 1894, Madden was reported to be moving his hotel to Silverton, but his ads continued to appear until September. The Slocan Trading and Navigation Co. last mentioned Bonanza City as a port of call for its steamship in an ad on Dec. 20, 1894. It was listed in the 1897 BC directory as a mining camp at the head of Slocan Lake but with the erroneous notation “See Bear Lake City,” a different place entirely. The Nelson Tribune of Dec. 28, 1899 listed W. Hall of Bonanza City as a guest at the Madden Hotel in Nelson. The only photo of Bonanza City known to exist, held by Library and Archives Canada, shows a sawmill on the newly-cleared townsite and a log-strewn lake. The name survives in Bonanza Creek, Bonanza Road, and Bonanza Marsh. (The creek appears to have been named after the town, as it doesn’t show up on maps until 1915.) Meanwhile, Hill Siding was added to the CPR timetable on Oct. 14, 1900. Although the name reflects the local topography, it was actually after Alfred (1850-1907) and Wilson (1862-1929) Hill, who had the sawmill there from about 1893 to 1903. They were in Nelson in 1889 and “made a small fortune as real estate speculators and contractors.” The earliest known newspaper reference to Hill Siding — and latest known reference to Bonanza City — is in the Slocan Mining Review of Feb. 14, 1907: “The last train to leave Sandon was on Wednesday the 6th, which pulled out several hours late, but it failed to force a passage through the heavy snow which had swept the track south of Hill’s Siding just beyond Bonanza City.” The CPR changed the name to Hills by September of that year, judging by a timetable in the Revelstoke Railway Museum. However, it was interchangeably called Hill Siding, Hill’s Siding, or Hills Siding for many decades afterward. Hills appears on a 1924 Department of Interior map and is also mentioned in the Slocan Enterprise of Jan. 18, 1928 regarding a court ruling “in favour

of the claimants for damages to the [timber] limits between Summit Lake and Hills.” Hills didn’t actually become a community until the late 1920s when several Doukhobor families settled there. By that time, a third place existed about two miles northwest variously called Hunter Siding, Hunter’s Siding, or Hunters’ Siding. Its namesake was William Hunter (1858-1939), the father of Silverton. According to New Denver: Eldorado of the Past, “Bill Hunter had a sawmill in Rosebery, then at Silverton and next he moved to Hunters’ Siding.” The earliest reference yet found is in the Slocan Enterprise of April 8, 1925: “Edward Hunter, who has been taking out ties at Hunter’s Siding, is home for a few days.” (Edward, better known as Buzz, was William’s son.) The school that operated in the area from 1932 to 1950 was called Hunter’s Siding, but when a post office opened in 1952, it was known as Hill Siding before changing its name to Hills after a couple of months. Former postmaster George Markin wrote in the Arrow Lakes News of Dec. 16, 1981: “To distinguish from other sidings throughout the Slocan Valley, the postal department deemed it advisable to change the name of Hills Siding to Hills shortly after its inception, and thus it remains.” (However, by that time the only other siding in the valley was Perry Siding.) The post office closed in 1970. Hill Siding was originally located at mile 39.3 on the railway, but in 1953 it was moved 3.3 miles north to be closer to the post office, according to a CPR timetable. There is a fourth place in the mix, the obscure Redhouse or Red House, another siding slightly northwest of Hunter Siding. A version of the name first appears in the Slocan Mining Review of Sept. 17, 1908: “Adolph Mero will leave on Friday for his ranch, near the Red Section house, where he intends to put in a lot of general work and also build a cabin.” The Arrow Lakes News of May 26, 1938 carried a story about the accidental death of J. Alfred Jones, the CPR sectionman at Redhouse. The headline spelled it Redhouse, while the story said “He had been at Red House about three or four months.” Rosemarie Parent of the Arrow Lakes Historical Society believes Redhouse “was just a bunkhouse and possibly red because it was the CPR’s colour. It was where Marc Dumont’s mill was, according to an old timer’s tape.” Today, Bonanza City, Hill Siding, Hunter Siding, and Redhouse are all part of Hills.

The Waneta Expansion Project offered a unique opportunity to work with the Ktunaxa Nation. A project of this scale required a large number of workers from a variety of trades. The Ktunaxa Nation was able to work with the owners to create employment opportunities for 13 Ktunaxa Nation citizens, including trades apprentices and journeymen.

At peak construction over 450 people worked directly on the project

Some Ktunaxa Nation workers shared their experience on the project: “Overall, I had a great time on the project. I met a whole bunch of people and made new friends. My time on the Waneta site gave me some amazing workplace experiences. I plan on going back to school to continue this learning experience I started in Waneta.” “I came onto the project early. It was tough being away from my family but the experience I received on the site, particularity working at great heights, has helped me greatly in my construction career.” Ktunaxa Nation citizens received on-thejob training and education throughout the project. Many of those who were employed have chosen to continue their training that began on the Waneta Expansion Project. This collaboration between the Ktunaxa Nation and the project owners is a shining example of how organizations can come together to create employment and inspire lifelong learning.

Left: Using specially designed homemade tools, Koss and his classmates engaged in hard labour to forge the helmets. Right: Josh Koss with two of his medieval armour helmets in different stages of production.

Discovering Ancient Ways at Kootenay Studio Arts Kootenay Studio Arts (KSA) student Josh Koss is piecing together history in an effort to explore his passion for medieval armour. Using ancient techniques mostly lost in time, Koss is using his training in the fourmonth Blacksmithing Program at KSA to forge replica helmets employed on the battlefields of Europe during the 15th Century. With hammer strokes and heat, the 25-year-old is using his formal arts education to fuel his fascination with the past. “I’ve always been into knights and Vikings and medieval stuff,” says Koss, who is originally from Ottawa. “Ever since I was a kid, I would always get my mom to buy the plastic armour at Walmart. When I was 16, randomly browsing the internet looking up stuff about ninjas, I stumbled upon an article on how to make your own chainmail. Something just clicked in my brain: people actually make armour. I dove into it after that.” Koss is not the first KSA student to shape metal into replica armour, but his technique is something that hasn’t been tried at the Victoria Street Campus in Nelson. Throughout history, armour production has been a vital tool of warfare. A labour intensive process, prior to sheet metal the sweat equity that went into outfitting soldiers was extensive. The exact methods used by medieval armourers are in question, but modern scholars have put together clues using a detailed examination of extant

RILKOFF’S STORE

historical armour. As part of his classwork, Koss researched a technique from the bucket makers of Bienno, Italy who have been forging deep steel vessels with water powered tools for hundreds of years. Using individual heavy plates of steel, Koss is using heat and the specially designed tools he created to hammer out his helmets. “He’s taking it back a step because it’s hundreds of years old,” says KSA Blacksmithing Instructor Kevin Kratz. “It really gives everybody an idea how little things in metalworking have changed. It’s been exciting for everyone and we have all participated in it. It’s been educational.” A Fascination with the Past After graduating high school, Koss enrolled in engineering at the University of Ottawa. After his first year he decided to take a different direction and registered in arts school where he spent three years focussing on drawing and painting. While in art school, his love for armour continued and Koss started experimenting with metal work. Setting up a little shop in his basement, he used resources on the internet and contacts with other armour enthusiasts to guide him. He discovered a healthy culture of armour creators and collectors online. “It’s super specific and nerdy,” Koss says with a chuckle. This past summer Koss hit the road and headed west. His destination was the Shambhala Music Festival near Salmo, but planned to explore employment

options in British Columbia afterwards. While enjoying the festival, Koss came upon the booth set up by KSA faculty and staff which was providing demonstrations in blacksmithing and bronze casting. “I had never actually heard of Nelson before coming out to Shambhala,” Koss says. “All of sudden I come across this school where they were doing the bronze casting and blacksmithing. I had been doing metal work for six years, so I figured I might as well move to Nelson for the program. I enrolled two weeks before the program started.” With the enthusiastic guidance of Kratz and the wellequipped KSA blacksmithing studio serving as fuel, Koss pounced on his opportunity to take his armour making to the next level during the four month program. “I have dove into the craft part of it, I don’t really think about the use part of it as much anymore,” he says. “The actual act of making it is fascinating. Looking at real medieval pieces, which are beautiful and high works of art. It’s turned into a weird obsession.” Though Koss is using techniques previously not practiced at the KSA studio, Kratz is more than happy to help foster the experimentation. “It’s a big component on how I like to run the program,” says Kratz. “Dictating what they do is great, but they need to have the freedom to experiment. What Josh is doing is still within the course outcomes. He has to do

a production run and he is doing a production run of helmets, which I never really expected him to do.” Outfitting a World of Collectors With the blacksmithing component of his Sculptural Metal Diploma now complete, Koss is moving into the four-month Bronze Casting Program portion of his studies where he will continue to build his armour making skills. “It certainly doesn’t feel very much like school and I’ve learned a lot more than I ever have in more conventional types of school,” Koss says of his KSA experience to this point. Koss has received interest from armour makers around the world for the work he has done over the last few months. Though labour intensive—each helmet will take Koss at least 20 hours of work to complete from start to finish—there is a market for high end replicas. After graduation, Koss will continue to explore what his options for turning a passion into profit. “I have been at armour for six years and I’m almost at the point where if I put in another solid year of dedicated study I will have enough of an understanding to be able to go into business as producing plausible, historical armour reproduction,” he says. “It’s really the merging of the world of blacksmithing and modern armour making… I’m super excited about it.” Find out more about Kootenay Studio Arts online at selkirk. ca/school/arts.

Stylishly built for the Great White North By Zack Spencer

Today the automotive landscape has exploded with manufacturers offering many more AWD vehicles. In fact, 48 percent of all vehicles purchased in Canada come with AWD or fourwheel drive (4X4). For Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Canada (Formerly Chrysler Canada) the percentage is even higher, at roughly 58 percent. Thanks, in part, to the success of the Jeep brand and the many vehicles sold under that off-road-ready marque. The latest entry, the Jeep Renegade, will be arriving at dealerships around April but just last week I had a chance to drive this small Jeep in classic Canadian winter conditions just outside of Montreal. Looks The setting for the winter driving program was at ICAR, an enthusiast’s racing facility built on the abandoned aprons and taxiways of the old Mirabel airport, including a slalom course, road coarse and off-road adventure. The bold orange Renegade instantly jumped out against the howling wind and at-times, whiteout conditions. The Renegade is built in Europe on the same platform that Fiat uses to

make the all-new Fiat 500X. This cost sharing, multivehicle offensive is what has helped Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to be so successful over the past few years. The engineering and design was done in Michigan to insure the Renegade has all the classic Jeep characteristics, from the round headlamps and classic Jeep grille, to the trapezoidal wheel arches, appropriate ground clearance and overall bold styling. The Renegade is smaller than the Compass and Patriot models in the lineup, helping to promote the red-hot, small crossover segment even further. Inside With a high seating position and boxy roofline, the Renegade has a lot of headroom and large windows, making this compact crossover feel open and airy. The dash and surrounding trim is filled with eye-catching touches, like the speaker grilles and air vents that come painted for more panache. The front seats are supportive and provide a nice look down the long hood, making this feel more “trucky” The back seats offer plenty of room in this class and the cargo area is what Jeep calls class leading. Prices start at $19,995 for base Sport model with

front wheel drive (FWD) and the first AWD model starts at $25,995. The volume leader will be the North trim with alloy wheels, starting at $27,494 for an AWD version. The problem will be the higher end trims, like the $31,995 Limited, that look pricy compared to a bigger to a compact SUV, like a Honda CR-V, with a much more powerful engine, vastly bigger interior and a $30,000 AWD starting price.

‘‘

The Jeep Renegade follows on the heels of some other stylish compact crossover vehicles like the Kia Soul and Nissan Juke that provide a bit more flair, rather than just practicality.

Zack Spencer

’’

Drive FCA didn’t just have the

Renegade to drive in frozen weather, rather a selection of the seventeen vehicles they offer with AWD or 4X4 capability. They were clear to point out that nine of the twenty-six models have AWD available even on the base trim. The Renegade’s base AWD system is a lighter weight active powertrain that can disconnect the rear wheels to save fuel but reconnect them in a fraction of a second if the temperature drops of the windshield wipers are turned on. On dry pavement, the system only needs to detect the slightest wheel slippage to engage the AWD capability. In addition there is a terrain select knob in each model that lets the driver choose between auto, snow, sand, mud and rocks to alert the Renegades’ traction control, stability control and engine/ transmission electronics to keep the Jeep moving in different situations. The ultimate is the AWD system with a low setting for crawling over rocks, something Jeep purest appreciate. Verdict The Jeep Renegade follows on the heels of some other stylish compact crossover vehicles like the Kia Soul and Nissan Juke that provide a bit more flair, rather than just practicality. This

new Renegade also has the advantage of being equipped with two sophisticated AWD systems to keep it ahead of the pack. The base engine is a 1.4L turbo 4-cylinder with 160hp but this model is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission; if the buyer wants and automatic, the larger 180hp 2.4L 4-cylinder is fitted with a class leading 9-speed automatic. There is a whopping $2,990 premium to get the larger engine and automatic on the Sport trim and just $1,495 on the North, excluding the price premium to get AWD. At the end of the day this Jeep has a very attractive exterior and interior and is something fresh in one of the hottest segments in the market. The price can jump very, very quickly if the buyer wants AWD and automatic. Time will tell if buyers will spend the extra to buy the higher end models. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca The Lowdown Power: 1.4L turbo with 160hp or 2.4L with 180hp Fill-up: N/A Sticker price: $19,995$31,995 Not that long ago, if an allwheel drive (AWD) vehicle was on a buyer’s shopping list, the options were largely limited to SUVs and trucks.

Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Don’t drive your truck in a watery grave By Ian Harwood

Spring-like weather means the back woods trails are already beckoning us out here in the west. While my Driveway colleagues seem to have spent the last month plowing through snow and ice back east, I’m raring to get out there in our beautiful back yard. However, there are a few things to think about before you head out into the back roads of British Columbia this spring, to find yourself driving through those swollen creeks and rivers. Think about that water entering areas of your truck, believe me, you would prefer it did not do so! – Your truck’s transmission, transfer

case, and front and rear differentials must be vented to compensate for changes in air pressure as temperatures go up and down when you drive, but when you are driving off road in wet conditions the most likely place for water to enter is through those vents. Water that gets in contaminates the lubricants that protect parts, and that can lead to bearing and gear damage. To keep water from getting into areas where it should not be is fairly easy. Attach a rubber hose, or vacuum hose to each vent, and then extend it to a high location on the truck. The length of tubing required will depend on your vehicle, but 30 – 35 centimetres should be enough. Before you begin, locate the vent on each component. Determine if each vent is a tube

or a cap style. If it is a tube style make sure that the hose fits tight and secure it with a small hose clamp, leaving excess hose length to route upwards. Cap type vents are usually screwed in mushroom shaped. Remove the cap from each one by unscrewing it. Use this for a sample and buy a nipple vent with the same thread size and replace the cap with the nipple. The new vacuum hose for the transmission and transfer case vents can be secured along the frame or body to the firewall with plastic tie straps (do not over tighten and pinch the hose) and from there up into the engine compartment. Make sure to secure the end.

A watery grave Pick of the Week: continued from page A12

Leave about 8 centimetres and bend it downward. The front differential hose is to be routed in a similar fashion but allow enough slack for axle movement. The same goes for the rear differential but instead of running it to the front, direct it up between the bed and the cab of the truck. When you have finished, check the tubing to make sure it is free of kinks and positioned away from hot exhaust or engine parts. Now you are ready to go through creeks and mud holes with very little chance of water to enter the vents. Water can still enter components through other routes, so

be sure to check the color of your differential and transmission fluid after each trip. Axle grease turns a light brown color when mixed with water. Automatic transmission fluid turns pink when mixed with water. Most manufacturers recommend you check the wheel bearings if you have been in water deeper than the hubs. Re-pack the wheel bearings if there is any sign of water entry.

Five Cool Canadian Classics

By Rob Sass

Canada has an automotive heritage every bit as rich as that of the United States. Some extraordinarily interesting collectible cars have been produced here over the years. These are five favourites: 1. 1965 Acadian Beaumont Sport DeluxeSimilar to the American Chevrolet Chevelle, the Beaumont Sport Deluxe followed the original muscle car formula of the Pontiac GTO by stuffing the most powerful engine readily available into the smallest body. Only twenty-three were built with the potent L79 327 cubic inch, 350

hp engine option. All were built in GM’s Oshawa, ON plant. 2. 1974-75 Bricklin SV-1- The Bricklin was a gullwing door sports car that was built in what was then a relatively underemployed part of New Brunswick. Generous tax-incentives were paid out of the provincial coffers to get Malcolm Bricklin to locate his factory there. If it all sounds familiar, it should, this was essentially the DeLorean story played out seven years earlier in Canada rather than Northern Ireland. Sadly, it ended much the same way with not even two years of production of the Bricklin “safety sports car” before the whole operation folded up owing

the government of New Brunswick over $20 million. Power came from either Ford or AMC V8s. 3. 1956 Studebaker Flight Hawk- The Hawk was a particularly fine-looking coupe that was a derivative of the 1953 Robert Bourke/Raymond Loewy Starliner coupe. Oddly, only the 1956 model year base six-cylinder Flight Hawk coupes were built in Canada in Studebaker’s Hamilton, ON plant where the last Studebakers rolled off the line just ten years later in 1966. 4. 2002 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6Most Americans are blissfully unaware that William Shatner and Michael J. Fox

are actually Canadian. They’d likely be equally surprised to find out that one of the most quintessentially American muscle cars was actually Canadian. The last (and some argue the best) Pontiac Trans Am with the WS6 package was assembled alongside its F-body cousin the Chevrolet Camaro in Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec where production had shifted in 1993.

5. 2002 Chevrolet Camaro SS 35th Anniversary- Chevrolet certainly had an interesting way of celebrating the Camaro’s birthday—they killed it at age thirty-five. The SS shared the Corvette-derived LS6 powerplant with the above-mentioned Trans Am WS6. In its convertible form, it is quite collectible. After F-body production ended in 2002, GM closed the plant, which was the last GM plant operating outside of Ontario. Rob Sass is the vice-president of content for Hagerty Insurance. ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23

You impress everyone with your creativity this week, Aries. Allow this creativity to be the inspiration behind projects you have been putting off of late.

Libra, you may be searching for a new adventure, but try to appreciate the here and now as well. It’s easy to get swept up in fantasies, but don’t let them carry you too far away.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Keep your goals relatively simple for the next few days, Taurus. You can benefit from the positive reinforcement of completing tasks and getting things done.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you have been immersed in work and are starting to show the ill effects of keeping long hours. Now is a great time to take a few days off or enjoy a mini-vacation.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, you have a lot to get done, but resist the urge to micromanage every detail, as this could be a surefire path to burnout. You need to take a few breaths.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, you suspect that someone is hiding something, and that very well may be the case. Perhaps a welcome surprise is coming your way. Resist the urge to dig too deep.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 You can probably talk your way out of trouble, Sagittarius, but this time it’s better to let things play out. Keep conversations light and free from controversy.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, find balance between your personal ambitions and things you have to accomplish at work and at home. Finding a middle ground is the best approach.

Leo, avoid the temptation to get started on another new project. You already have plenty of other things on your plate. Finish those tasks before moving on to something new.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20

It is sometimes easy to miss the forest for the trees, Virgo. Try taking a step back so you can look at a puzzling project from a new perspective.

Your demeanor makes it easy for others to enjoy your company, and that will come in handy as your social schedule fills up in the days ahead.

Aquarius, you need a few extra people to contribute to a special task, but you do not know who to ask. If you think hard enough, you will know who you can depend on.
