Largest cocaine bust in the Kootenays from The Trail Daily Times After a seven-month investigation, the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) is finally releasing information on the single largest cocaine bust in the Kootenays. On July 26, Caitlin Christine Gladdish, listed as being from Kelowna, was arrested, but only recently charged, for importation of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking of over 35 kilograms of cocaine. The stash was discovered during a routine vehicle inspection while she was attempting to get into Canada at the Waneta crossing in Trail.
She was not previously known to officers. “During the primary inspection, the officer conducted routine checks in the vehicle and noticed irregularities when inspecting the traveller’s trunk,” said CBSA area chief, Lorne Black at a press conference earlier this week. “The narcotics were concealed in an aftermarket compartment, a void created below the trunk area.” The long delay before making the bust public was due to the investigation. “(The wait) was because of the investigation into the matter,” said CBSA spokesperson Jennifer Bourque, adding that there is still information being with-

held about where the drugs were going. “As this case is before the courts, we cannot provide additional details on origin or destination.” Gladdish is scheduled to appear in court on March 5 in Rossland. According to Laurie White, spokesperson for the RCMP in British Columbia, police can recommend charges, but it was up to the Crown prosecutor to formally charge Gladdish with the crime. Black says the late public announcement doesn’t mean the border protection agency is sitting on their hands. “Although we cannot discuss details about our investigation techniques, I can tell you that CBSA officers are vigilant when it comes to ensuring our borders are not used for illegal

The Weekday View
Opinion: A few notes on Hugs and Slugs by Brian Coombs There is a trope called Cerebus Syndrome (www.tvtropes.org) that refers to when something starts out as light, and possibly comedic and then assumes unwanted dramatic and serious aspects. Remember the Will Smith movie, Hancock? (don’t worry if you can’t—very few people do) It started as a funny send-up of the superhero genre, only to devolve to a serious quagmire of muddled emotion that no one asked for by the end. Remember when Kanye West was just a singer and not an unwanted award ceremony acceptance speech crasher? Remember how when the words ‘A Very Special Episode’ showed up before your favourite sit-com, it was absolutely guaranteed to be a downer? Well, we here at the Advertiser generally look at Hugs and Slugs as being a light and fun way to give an anonymous thanks or to vent a little general frustration. Call it the ‘I can haz cheezeburger?’ part of the newspaper. Many people have said that they enjoy trying to figure out who that helpful employee was at Walmart or if they can spot who that lousy driver in the grey Corolla was. They get a
chuckle, or maybe give a grim nod as they see that other people are angry at tail-gaters too. Of course, there are the people that the Hugs and Slugs are written about. When someone sends in a hug for the employee of a downtown employee who helped them when they slipped, that employee reads that hug and feels good about themselves. The same goes for the anonymous slug recipient; maybe they didn’t know they were being a jerk. (Tough call on that one—jerks tend to be notoriously un-self aware). While the majority of writers to Hugs and Slugs realize that this is a light, fun way to share the experience of life here, there has been a fairly recent trend of people sending in long, accusatory slugs that demand police, employer, or government action against specific individuals. There is another venue for those kinds of invectives; the old-school letter to the editor. Of course, a letter to the editor requires a level of bravery. The writer has to put their name to it. This is so the letter can be verified, but more importantly, it is because the letter is a serious matter that demands attention. That is as true whether it is a letter call-
ing for someone’s dismissal or thanking city council for rectifying some situation. It’s easy to take anonymous, poorly informed shots at specific people. After all, if your point becomes quickly disproved, no one knows who wrote it, right? And that’s the beauty of the letter to the editor. Should something happen that you want to tell the area about, knowing that your name is attached prompts at least a modicum of effort in getting your facts straight. Because of this, it is OK to name names (for good or bad) in a letter to the editor and outline your reasons for being happy or angry. Hugs and Slugs doesn’t require the same level of bravery or diligence because it was designed to be fun. No one needs to delve into the motivations behind the guy who let the theatre door close on an old lady to call him out (anonymously) as a horrible person. There is no need to do a follow up story on the nice person who helped you up when you slipped on the ice. A Hug or Slug will suffice. And we here at the Advertiser will zealously guard what makes Hugs and Slugs special because we never want that fun little part of the paper to become ‘A Very Special Episode.’ Hugs to the people who know what I’m talking about. Slugs to tail-gaters. Always.
Response to ‘Paying it forward for the environment The letter ‘Paying it forward for the environment’ ran in the January 20 edition of the Kootenay Advertiser. See the Federal Conservative Government achievements listed below and let the facts speak for themselves. National Parks, Reserves and Historic Sites $3 billion dollars to Canada’s National parks to improve highways, bridges and dams $99 million to support 1.569 local conservation projects benefitting the habitat for more than 430 species at risk under the Habitat Stewardship
Program Supporting the creation of Canada’s 1st National Urban Park by investing $140 million in conservation, restoration, education, endangered species recovery, visitor experience in the rouge National Urban Park and $7.6 million per year thereafter for its continuing protection and operation Launching the National Conservation Plan that includes $252 million to conserve and restore lands and waters across Canada Scientists Close to 4,200 inter-
views with the media were granted in 2014, by subject matter including scientists, of those 4200 interviews, more than 3800 were handled by our warning Preparedness Meteorologists and 369 interviews were done by other subject matter experts, including climatologists and ice forecasters. The Environment Since 2006, our Conservative Government has contributed $17.7 billion to support the environment including: $4.4 billion in clean transportation initiatives 3.2 billion to support the Clean Air regulatory agenda $1 billion for the Green Infrastructure Fund
$795 million to create the Clean energy Fund $600 million to preserve and restore Canada’s waters, including oceans and lakes In 2012 greenhouse gas emissions were 5.1% lower than 2005 levels, while the economy grew by 10.6% during the same period. We have achieved this through our balanced sector by sector regulatory approach. We are reducing emissions without damaging the economy with a job-killing carbon tax. Canadians can all be proud of these great achievements. ~David Wilks MP Kootenay-Columbia

Are they licensed, reliable, honest, professional, have current WCB Clearance Letter, carry CGL? 3. Knowing quotes can be written up differently and some are more concise than others, can you be confident you know the quotes are for the exact same scope of work? 4. Can you order materials and parts with enough lead time to have them when you need them? Do you know when in the project time line you need these materials and parts? 5. Where will you find alternative materials when you can’t find what you need in Cranbrook? How will you be sure these alternatives are compatible with the project? 6. What will you do when the materials and parts you ordered end up in Vancouver and won’t be delivered to Cranbrook for weeks or more? How will this affect the organization and time line of the job? 7. Can you be at the job site before 8:00 in the morning so you can organize your trades and man power for the day? 8. Can you visit the site at least 3 or 4 times a day to make sure everyone is doing what you need them to do and that they are “doing it right”? 9. How will you know what “doing it right” means? 10.
