Allen Fossheim still has the yellow bike on which he completed his first Ironman competition. It was the prized possession of his older brother who suffered from mental illness and committed suicide. Fossheim hopes the bike, and his brother’s memory, will inspire him to complete one of the toughest triathlon races in the world, the Celtman in Scotland.

When Allen Fossheim is late into a triathlon race, searching for that second wind to keep going, his thoughts often go to his late brother, Zoel. Fossheim, 31, lives in South Burnaby but is originally from Edson, Alta. Zoel, three years older, was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 17. “Something with my brother, he

had a tendency of just not telling anybody and just going for a walk,” said Fossheim, a carpenter. Zoel would be gone for a day and a half, returning with stories of what he saw in the woods and the great distances he covered. “So you get to the point, you’re that far into the race, it all adds up. If he can do it, why can’t I?” Since 2010, Fossheim has completed two Olympic-sized triathlons, one half-Ironman triathlon and two full-Ironmans. He’s now training for his toughest race yet, the Celtman! Extreme

Ironman in Wester Ross, Scotland on June 27. While the distances are similar to regular Ironmans, the conditions and terrain are anything but. He’ll start with a 3.8-km swim in the cold Atlantic Ocean waters of Loch Shieldaig, followed by a 202-km bike ride through the rolling hills of the Highlands, ending with a full marathon run, 42-km, of which about 75 per cent of the route is rocky, mountainous terrain where sometimes the pathway isn’t even evident. To top it off, Fossheim will have

to do the run with only a map and while wearing a backpack full of survival gear in case he gets fogged in. Fossheim and his wife, Shannon Macelli, were planning a trip to Norway for a family reunion anyway, and wanted to tack on a race along the way. With participants drawn via a lottery, he wasn’t able to win a spot in the Norseman or Swissman races, but snagged a spot for the Celtman coming off the reserve list when someone else dropped out. The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIOBC) is seeking witnesses to a Burnaby RCMP shooting of a robbery suspect early Sunday morning. At about 2:45 a.m. on March 1, Burnaby Mounties observed what appeared to be a robbery in progress at the 7-Eleven store on Canada Way at Edmonds Street, said IIOBC in a press release. RCMP say two male suspects got into a vehicle and rammed the police vehicle. Police fired shots before the suspects fled, eventually crashing about two blocks away near Canada Way and Rosewood Avenue. A police dog team tracked one suspect and found him near the vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital with serious but non-lifethreatening injuries. A second was also located and taken into custody. IIOBC investigators have reason to believe there were people in the area of Canada Way and Rosewood just before the crash. Anyone who has any information about the incident, is asked to call IIOBC at 1-855-446-8477. twitter.com/WandaChow

A grieving young woman who wanted a legacy bench to keep the memory of her younger sister alive will now have a bench in her name as well after she died in a car accident in Burnaby near BCIT. Shiloh Johnston, 22, of Coquitlam was killed after being struck by a car at the southwest corner of Canada Way and Gardner Court on Feb. 17. Johnston was back at her second day of work after taking a week off to grieve the death of her sister Keziah, 20, who died earlier in February of undisclosed causes. Johnston was walking during a lunch break when she was struck by a car that had collided with another vehicle. Police have so far determined that just after 12:30 p.m. that day, a white Infiniti travelling eastbound on Canada Way collided with a grey Volkswagen Jetta which was turning right, eastbound, onto Canada Way from Carey Avenue, said RCMP Sgt. Annie Linteau in a press release. The collision led to the Infiniti skidding along the centre median and crossing two lanes of traffic before hitting a power pole and Johnston, who was thrown a considerable distance, said RCMP. Johnston was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The driver and two passengers from the Infiniti, two men and a woman all around 18 years old, were taken to Vancouver General Hospital. The driver of the Volkswagen, a woman in her 50s, and her son, in his early 20s, were taken to Burnaby Hospital. All had non-life-threatening injuries. Police believe speed may have been a factor in the incident. As part of the ongoing investigation, Burnaby RCMP are seeking surveillance footage from the area. They are especially interested in talking with the drivers of two vehicles shown in video footage they’ve received so far in hopes they have information that could

Meanwhile, a fundraising campaign has been established on the website gofundme. com to buy a memorial bench and contribute to other charities supported by Keziah and Shiloh Johnston. “Keziah was a wonderful young woman filled with passion and life, 10 days later her older sister Shiloh Johnston was tragically killed. Canadian school to institute the American college athletic model putting SFU into the NAIA and offering athletic scholarships, something that wasn’t done north of the border in those days. Davies built a program of 18 varsity sports and established national training centres at the university for soccer, athletics and wrestling. “Lorne meant everything to SFU athletics – it was his life’s work,” said SFU athletic director Milton Richards in a press release. “We will forever carry his spirit in our hearts every time our student athletes put on the Clan uniform to enter competition. Our crest will always be a tribute to Lorne, his values, and his vision.” Davies chose the Clans colours – blue for loyalty, red for courage and white for honesty. Fresh off spending six years as an assistant coach with the B.C. Lions, including winning the 1964 Grey Cup, Davies had a reputation as a task master, which was evident from the first practice.

“I tell you what, the guys on the Bridge on the River Kwai and all that sort of stuff had nothing on us,” said Dave Cutler, who went on to a CFL Hall of Fame career as a kicker, told the NewsLeader on the occasion of the team’s 40th season in 2004. “They had 195 guys the first day. The second practice there was 95. The first practice was just that tough. It was just unbelievable. I had never seen football that tough in my life.” Cutler said only 12 guys make it through to their senior season from

Typical old-fashioned football, you’ve got to remember when that was,” said Beaton. Along with being the athletic director for 30 years, he was also SFU’s first head football coach. With him at the helm the first eight years, the Clan had a 34-21-1 record, including an 8-0 season in 1970. Davies’ ultimate vision was for SFU to become one of the U.S. college’s elite battling the likes of USC, UCLA and the University of Washington. The Clan recently joined the NCAA Division II in the hope of reviving that dream. “[Davies] certainly did establish an excellent program and established an athletic department that is probably one of the finest in Canada,” Beaton said in 2004. “He was the one who set the tone, not just in football, but the whole athletic department.” SFU’s gym is now called the Lorne Davies Complex. He was inducted into the SFU Sports Hall of Fame in 1986, the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame in 2009, and the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. Triathlete goes to extremes to honour his brother continued from FRONT PAGE

He’ll be the only Canadian competitor among the 218 participants from 47 countries. “They’re sort of bucket list races, to be able to say what you are able to do and what you can do and to push it to the next max,” he said, explaining why he’d put himself through such a challenge. “It’s like a runner’s high or something like that. You get out there and you just feel like nothing can stop you.” Fossheim has started a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to try and raise the $5,000 he’ll need, mainly for equipment and travel costs. Of all the money raised, 20 per cent will be donated to the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta in memory of Zoel, who had an indirect hand in turning his little brother into a triathlete. Fossheim said his brother “lived a pretty rough life” after his diagnosis, going in and out of psychiatric hospitals and homelessness. There were times his family could only track his whereabouts through his use of

his bankcard. In his last few years Zoel returned to his parents’ home and bought a cheap road bike. “He used it twice and realized with the medication he was on his balance was no good, he couldn’t do it,” Fossheim said. “But it was his prized possession, right, because he bought it, it was something that was his.” Even when he didn’t have a place to stay he carried the bike around everywhere he went. When Zoel took his own life on March 4, 2010, the yellow bike was one of the things left behind. Fossheim took the bike home. “At that point I was like, now I have a bike. Zoel would have rode it, so why shouldn’t I?” He started riding it and when friends signed up for an Ironman triathlon he did too, “not knowing what I was getting into.” Before that race, a friend had an extra entry into a small Olympic-level triathlon— 1.5-km swim, 40-km bike ride and a 10-km run—in Banff. “I had gone for maybe three

bike rides before, a little bit of a run, I had no gear,” he recalled with a laugh. “It was basically, I went, I did it and I was the last male to finish.” It was something of a rude wake-up call, but by then he was hooked. He and his wife moved to Burnaby, he began training more seriously and the rest is history. While he’s had to upgrade to lighter carbon-fibre bikes, he still trains occasionally using Zoel’s bike, which hangs in his living room. “I know he pushes me, to put it bluntly,” he said of Zoel, who he credits with his perspective on life. “If you don’t live every day to its fullest, what’s the point? That’s one way I look at it.” • To contribute to Allen Fossheim’s Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, visit http://bit.ly/18hoYmv. As of Monday afternoon, $650 had been raised. If he reaches $1,000 by April 2, the campaign page can continue as he pushes toward his ultimate goal of $5,000.

NEWSLEADER’S VIEW:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

Combining creatively B.C. school boards will have to cut $29 million in the next year, and $54 million over the next two years, says the provincial government. The B.C. Liberals says they would like to see some amalgamation of services between neighbouring school boards and that’s not such a bad idea. We’re sure you wouldn’t have to look very hard in government to find suitable cuts and areas where district could come together to share resources. Heck, the Burnaby school district has managed to build two brand new high schools and extensively renovate a third in the time New Westminster has been dithering over replacing its single high school. Perhaps if the two districts functioned as one, New West students and their parents would finally have some certainty when they’d no longer have to share their rundown classrooms and overcrowded hallways with rats and peeling paint. The Education and Health Ministries continue to be a black hole for government money – both major expenditures for the provincial government. Instead of griping about the problem (after all, the province has been forced to make cuts of its own to keep the budget balanced), it would be refreshing to see school trustees come together to see what could be done to deliver better service and lower costs. How that would look must come from the education sector and parents. The focus must always be put into the classroom and better preparing our students for the future. Adminstration and non-teaching roles are important, but does every school district need someone counting widgets when that same person could count widgets for two or even three districts? To use a tired, old cliché: it’s time to look outside the box – or classroom, if you wish – to find solutions.

The pleasure of ignorant bliss Like so many on Feb. 22, I watched the Academy Awards presentations. Like most who tuned in, my interest was boring at best. Movies have never been a big part of my time allocation. In fact, the last film I watched in a theatre was The Bucket List, which was eight years ago. A more recent movie, viewed on my home DVD player, was Avatar, had to be at least three years ago. As a result of my disinterest in most things celluloid (or is it all digital now?), I have no idea what any of today’s movies are about, and I seriously doubt I will ever watch them. On that Sunday I did, however, reflect on a memorable movie or two in my past. The first colour film I ever watched, in the Qualicum Beach theatre, was African Queen, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. Bogie died in 1957, which dates both me and the film. His wife,

Mark Rushton Lauren Bacall, whose fame as the “Icon of Cool” was added to in the Key Largo song lyrics “like Bogie and Bacall,” survived until August of last year. Katharine Hepburn starred in the African Queen in 1951, and 30 years later, teamed up – again on a boat – with another Hollywood icon Henry Fonda. I can’t remember if I saw that one in the theatre or at home on the VCR. I still have one – brand new, never-used – sitting beneath a similarly dormant DVD player. Like tape decks and movie players, all have succumbed to the online streaming of film and music. Nowadays, you can get all the movies on Netflix (at least I’m so told, as I’ve never watched

nor subscribed). Besides, these days you don’t have much of an alternative, as nearly all the movie rental stores have long ago closed. I recall many years ago the rage for eight-track tape decks that allowed you to listen to music in cars, other than on the radio. It wasn’t long before those clunky and prone-to-failure tapes were replaced with much smaller cassettes. Technology wasn’t long in replacing them with CDs which, now occasionally seen dangling from a car mirror, also lived a brief life. Most new cars come equipped with satellite-delivered sound, commercial-free, and the selections available on voice command. If you want your own music, plug in your iPod or mobile phone. My Jeep has a six-CD player in it – the unit replaced a year ago because the original ate a homerecorded disc and destroyed it.

I installed a new player because the damaged one made a hell of a noise every time I started the vehicle. Still haven’t played a CD in it. While it would be convenient to blame “the industry” for built-in obsolescence, the root cause is simply the incredible march of innovative technology that has allowed us to go from vinyl records (themselves evolutionary) played through scratchy needles, to digital sound bounced off a satellite hundreds of miles above us. What next I wonder will be developed ... glasses that downstream music, movies and the Internet (oops, already here)? Or will it be cornea implants? Whither the future lies in distribution of entertainment, from the above it can be interpreted that I shall forever remain mostly, and pleasantly, disconnected. Mark Rushton is a weekly columnist for The Abbotsford News

COMMENT

Here are some facts about oil tankers Claims by anti-Trans Mountain pipeline expansion groups regarding tanker safety usually cry doom and gloom, but lack information for the reader to even begin to form a judgement, in my opinion. Here are some facts. There has never been a reported oil tanker spill (except canola oil) in B.C. waters in our 100 years plus of B.C. oil tanker operations (60 years-plus at Trans Mountain’s Burnaby terminal). Much or most of this period was before double hulls, modern radar, tethered tugs, coastal pilots and other improvements in safety. On our Atlantic coast, with far more tankers than the B.C. coast, there were two fair-size (about 10,000 tonnes) spills in the 1970s, but no large oil tanker spills in Canadian waters since. (A “tonne” is about 7.35 barrels of oil or 257 Imperial Gallons). Oil tankers ply the Great Lakes, the source of drinking water for many U.S. states and several Canadian provinces. Tankers carried crude oil from the Bent Horn oil field in the Canadian Arctic for a decade through icechoked waters without incident. Tankers ply the pristine St. Lawrence River, the Eastern Seaboard and Newfoundland waters. Contrary to frequent false claims, “supertankers” are not proposed for the Trans Mountain project; it is the much smaller Aframax ships, already used here for years. Claims of high currents under the Second Narrows Bridge are true but alarmist and irrelevant since loaded tankers go through at slack water

(minimal current) and even then are tethered with tugs. Others raise the specter of Exxon Valdez and demand that no tankers be allowed in B.C. Think of the Titanic, the repeated crashes of the first jet passenger aircraft (Comets), the space shuttle Challenger, the Queen of the North ferry, and so on. Fortunately, the world rejected this “never try it again” approach and instead tightened regulations, designs and practices, rather than throwing technological progress under the bus after these disasters. The idea that tankers will trash Vancouver’s tourism reputation

is questionable. Vancouver, like most large coastal cities in the U.S., is a port – people know that. Ninetyplus per cent of Vancouverites, let alone tourists, can’t tell a tanker from a freighter. What blights our tourist reputation is rain, horrendous traffic, expensive parking, overpriced hotels, the Downtown Eastside right by the cruise ship terminals and beggars on the streets. One other point: Has Exxon Valdez killed tourism to Alaska? Looking worldwide, since 1970, tanker traffic (billion ton-miles) has increased about 60 per cent, yet “large” spills (over 700 tonnes) have

decreased from their mid-1970s peaks by about 95 per cent. There was only one such spill across the world in 2014. This B.C.-Canadian history and world progress do not guarantee there will never be a spill in B.C., but does perhaps suggest that it is not quite time to light our hair on fire and claim disastrous spills in B.C. are “inevitable.” John Hunter

RCMP search for wanted man Guilty plea in James Patrick Benson involved in alleged assault in Burnaby Wanda Chow

wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

Burnaby RCMP are asking for the public’s help in finding James Patrick Benson, who is wanted on a B.C. and Canada-wide arrest warrant. Benson, 34, is wanted in connection with an alleged assault on Feb. 10. He was last seen on the morning of Feb. 11 at a home in the 7000-block of Balmoral Street in Burnaby, say RCMP. His whereabouts are currently unknown. Benson is a two-time federal offender who

was serving a long-term supervision order that does not expire until April 25, 2021. He is described as Caucasian, 5’10”, 200 lbs with brown hair and brown eyes. He has several tattoos: “011707” on his left wrist, “MORBID” on his left forearm, a four leaf clover/“LOST SOUL” on his chest and red stars on both shoulders. “We are pursuing numerous investigative avenues in an effort to locate James Patrick Benson and have not

excluded the possibility that he may have left British Columbia,” said RCMP Sgt. Annie Linteau, Lower Mainland District media relations officer, in a press release. “We urge anyone to call police should they encounter James Benson and use caution in their dealings with him”. Anyone who may have information as to Benson’s whereabouts is asked to call Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922 (file #20156672) or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

sex assault Wanda Chow

wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

A 49-year-old man charged with sexual assault after an incident on a bus in Burnaby has pled guilty, say Metro Vancouver Transit Police. John Walter Sebela was arrested at his Coquitlam home on Nov. 27 after a Transit Police investigation of a sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl. Sebela approached the young woman at the Lougheed Town Centre bus loop on Nov. 24, touched her and made inappropriate comments before following her onto a bus. He sat beside her and sexually assaulted her before getting off the bus. Sebela has been in custody since his arrest. Sentencing is set for March 25.
