Ridge is paying for Pitt rec services Mayor Read wants to rework sharing agreement By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

Maple Ridge wants to even out its recreation services partnership with Pitt Meadows. According to the latest review of the joint parks and leisure services agreement, Pitt Meadows saves $1 million a year by combining resources with Maple Ridge in order to maintain parks and trails, offer programs and run facilities such as Family Recreation Centre and seniors centre. “Pitt Meadows achieved a zero-percent tax increase for their residents,” Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read said Tuesday. “We have to be accountable to our residents.” See Rec, 4

New gravel mine riles residents Quarry would drop Sheridan Hill by 30 m By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

Pitt Meadows city hall is working against a new rock quarry that could make a mole hill out of a mountain. The proposed quarry would take the top off of Sheridan Hill, blasting and excavating 240,000 tonnes of rock per year for the five years it

would operate. The quarry would remove the southern peak of Sheridan Hill, reducing its elevation about 30 metres, to 45 from 75 m. “In my estimation, it would be an open scar on the face of this community,” said Mayor John Becker. At Tuesday’s council meeting, Becker noted that provincial regulations give municipalities little control over mineral extraction within their borders. But the city will use what authority and influence it has to try

to stop the project. “It is the intention of this council to make every possible use of every possible tool we have at our disposal to oppose this project,” Becker said. He lives in the area, but the firstterm mayor said that does not give him a particular bias, nor put him in a conflict. “It is no secret that my family has lived at the bottom of Sheridan Drive for almost 25 years,” he said. “I take anything that happens in Pitt Meadows very personally, and

my strong opposition to this proposal has nothing to do with my proximity to it. There is no conflict of interest.” The new quarry would be on the south side of Sheridan Hill, fronting McNeil Road, and involve four properties totaling 26.4 hectares. The working site itself will cover 7.2 hectares. “It is anticipated that this operation will be highly visible from all directions,” according to city report by planner Dana Parr. See Quarry, 10

Building a foundation on trades Masonry newest program offered By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

M

aple Ridge is a blue collar city, with many residents who make a good buck in the building and trades sector, and are happy to steer their sons and daughters in that direction. That’s the opinion of Steven Wiebe, who is the vice-principal of partnerships and trades programs with the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District. The newest trade to be offered is masonry, which just started at Thomas Haney secondary last month. That’s probably appropriate, given that the school’s namesake and city founder was a bricklayer. There will likely be more trades to come. Wiebe said the modern trade programs offered in high schools are simply a good deal for students. These are not like their fathers’ old woodwork and metal shop classes. These are offered under the ACEIT program (accelerated credit enrolments in industry training), which the province uses to push trades. Firstly, masonry students get a foundational course that would cost them $3,400 for tuition if they attended a post-secondary institution for the training. The government covers the cost for high schoolers. Secondly, the work they do counts toward their high school graduation credits – so they’re also “doing school.” And third, these budding masons have upped their pay grade from other starting jobs their peers will take – well beyond the $10.25 a dishwasher might make. They can expect to ask $15 or $16 for their services if they can land a job in the field. All that said, it’s not the path of least resistance. The guys building brick walls at Thomas Haney will soon have ‘Popeye’ forearms. Brian De Palma, who is the course instructor through Kwantlen Polytechnic, says bricklaying is the most physically challenging and dirtiest of all the trades. On the other hand, once it is learned, it is one of the easiest trades to find work in, and a unionized journeyman in B.C. makes $47 per hour. De Palma

had to take a pay cut to become a teacher – but says he enjoys teaching, and cares about the future of his trade. “You can take it to any country,” said De Palma, who has worked at his craft in Australia, New Zealand and England. He doesn’t see demand for masons diminishing, even as new building materials come into vogue in Canada. Cities consider stone or brick facades a building improvement, and planning departments around the Lower Mainland promote masonry in

residential subdivisions and commercial developments. Even gas fireplaces are still installed with some masonry around them, he points out. De Palma was the project manager who oversaw the masonry work for the Target renovations at Haney Place Mall. His enthusiasm for brick and stone is rubbing off on his students. “I love it,” said Grade 12 Brad Komar. “It’s hands-on, the people in it are good people, and it’s a crazy [good] opportunity.”

Student Tony Wilkinson said the “classroom” is more like a job site. “He [De Palma] treats it like a workplace environment,” Wilkinson said. “It’s hands-on, and it’s easy to get the hang of.” They are the next generation of masons, and their services will be in demand. The average age of a mason in the province is 57, according to a survey done nine years ago, said Wiebe. “They’re retiring, and there’s nobody to replace them.” Wiebe sees the trades can be a fast track to a good lifestyle for many young people. He points to the likes of Garibaldi graduate Diana Yale, who is almost a red seal electrician at the age of 21. She splits her time between working in Northern B.C., and traveling to places like South America. The trades are also great options for students who know they are not university bound. Students in School District No. 42 can take carpentry and metal fabrication courses, as well as those to be an electrician or automotive service technician. Plumbing is in just its second year at Garibaldi. They district also offers culinary arts and hair design.

During the great depression, everyone was appalled at the 25% unemployment rate. Yet today, people with diverse-abilities are experiencing over 70% unemployment! Hiring people with diverse-abilities is a tangible example of good corporate citizenship and shows that your company values diversity.

It’s Good For Business. For more information on hiring people with diverse-abilities contact: jobs@lastcommittee.net

“The next one I would really like to go for is automotive collision repair,” said Wiebe. He noted government grants are made available to cover startup costs, and his job is to set up a partnership with a post-secondary institution that can offer foundational training. Wiebe noted there are seven major projects in B.C. that will create heavy demand for skilled trades. “There are real wages to be made,” said Wiebe. “The demand is going to be there for years to come.”

Clients needed The trades programs at Samuel Robertson Technical need some customers who want good value haircuts and meals. The student hair stylists offer a cut and shampoo for $6. Students in the culinary arts will generally offer entrees for $8, or full appetizer/ entree/dessert meals for $10. “They’re really good meals,” asserts Wiebe. “And you’re supporting programs in the community. They are served between 5 and 6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday. Drop-in welcome. • For more information or a hair appointment call 604-466-8409.

‘Pitt Meadows willing to pay more’ Rec from front

“If we can’t offer them something to them, we have to be accountable for every dollar we’re spending, she added. “And some of those dollars include us subsidizing this partnership. Read said the agreement has many other non-monetary values, but the present council is focused on accountability and transparency. “We need to be clear to our residents, this is the cost we’re bearing. Under the agreement, partnering with Pitt Meadows could cost Maple Ridge an extra $200,000 a year, because some services the latter provides aren’t jointly funded. That number is inexact, however, because it’s equal to the margin of error in the review. The topic was part of a Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge joint council meeting Tuesday, when politicians agreed to take a closer look at the partnership on March 12. Read says Pitt Meadows is willing to talk about the joint leisure-services agreement and she wants to look at programs and management. Each council has seen

the Joint Parks and Leisure Services Model Review, written by Professional Environmental Consultants, three times. The final report was delivered in July. Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker agrees, the agreement could use tweaking, once senior finance staff crunch the numbers. Under the agreement, while each city pays for entire capital cost for each facility or asset it creates within its borders, the operating costs are split based on population, with Maple Ridge paying 80 per cent and Pitt Meadows paying 20 per cent. Both cities recognize the advantages of sharing services, but every agreement needs to be adjusted over time, Becker said. According to the report, based on 2013 numbers, Pitt Meadows doesn’t contribute in three areas: funding for the art gallery in Arts Centre Theatre; paying for the social planning staff in Maple Ridge that often benefits Pitt Meadows; and contributing full-time to the costs of municipal cemeteries. However, the latter two aren’t part of the agreement.

Becker said financial staff from both cities are exchanging numbers and should bring back a proposal to bring more equity to the agreement. “If it turns out Pitt Meadows is getting a free ride ‌ on the social services function, that’s not fair and we should have a conversation about that.â€? Pitt Meadows is now paying $5,000 yearly for its share in the art gallery expenses, he added. Kelly Swift, general manager for parks and recreation, said both cities benefit from the agreement. “What really came to light in this review was how the financial benefits changed from the beginning.â€? Twenty years ago, Pitt Meadows didn’t have as many recreational facilities as it does now. Maple Ridge is in the middle of departmental reviews, which included a review of the work plan for Community Development, Parks and Recreation Services. That led Read to ask why the recreation master plan, OK’d in 2010, hasn’t had an implementation plan developed to show how new recreation fa-

Swift said an implementation plan usually accompanies a master plan that sets out the broad goals of the recreation department. “Typically, you would attach funding when you invest in a significant planning document like that. That’s the purpose in doing the planning, Swift said. “It doesn’t mean that dollars come immediate, but you put a strategy in place for some of the priorities out of that plan. The recreation master plan anticipated that a second indoor pool, after the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre, and would be located in Pitt Meadows at the Family Recreation Centre. However, Pitt Meadows has said it’s no longer interested in building an indoor pool. A new 25-metre indoor pool would cost at least $30 million. At Monday’s workshop meeting, Coun. Gordy Robson suggested tearing down the existing Leisure Centre and pool, about to start a $5.5-million renovation, and building a new pool in its place.

or the past 10 years, Grade 12 students taking Mark Beale’s Comparative Civilization class at Maple Ridge secondary have been faced with the task of tackling some of society’s most divisive topics of the day. Genocide, modern slavery, and poverty have all been exhaustively explored, complete with transforming a typical classroom into series of visual displays to help illustrate the study. But after a decade, it was time for a new topic. So Beale put it to his students, 120 in total. While the usual answers followed, it became clear to the teacher, and students, that this year’s project would be something completely different. As the 24-hour news cycle spits stories on Ebola outbreaks in western Africa, civil unrest in Ferguson following the shooting of an unarmed 18-yearold Michael Brown, and reports of the icy grip of winter on eastern Canada, Beale and his students decided this year’s Epic Project would look at four of the globe’s most pressing issue’s and what our world will look like if action isn’t taken.

Thinking of a move? Read what our residents have to say about their move to Greystone Manor

Epic Project students Jacob D’ Andrea and David Deane display the class warfare exhibit as part of their Comparative Civilizations class at Maple Ridge secondary. Global terrorism, class warfare, the environment, and global health issues are all on the agenda for this year’s Comparative Civilization students. The class shared the sets it built with the entire school this past week. Class after class file through to listen and learn. Jacob D’ Andrea is set to graduate in June and hopes to go on to study business at Douglas College and Simon Fraser University. As he tackled the topic of class warfare and how it could spread, D’ Andrea said the growing gap between the one per cent and the other 99 has the potential to cause widespread havoc in Canada and the U.S. “We already see it in countries like Africa, where people are targeted and killed because of their wealth,” said D’ Andrea. “If governments don’t do something about this, it

will grow. It will spread. We’ve seen the protests with Occupy Wall Street and it’s likely going to happen more often and become more violent.” With an eye on an economics degree, D’ Andrea feels more needs to be done to help the middle class, to boost jobs for middle and lower income families. Rya Perry was part of the class that delved into global health issues. With the spread of more deadly diseases, she and her classmates predicted that mass outbreaks in Canada could lead to widespread havoc in major metropolitan areas like Vancouver. Large public parks like Stanley Park would be used as housing areas, separating the healthy from the infirmed. “We’ve already seen what’s happened in Africa,” said Perry. “It could absolutely happen here.” With the threat of random acts of terrorism,

wide scale droughts, it’s easy to see why the students could predict the worst, said Beale. But, he added, the goal of the class is to open students’ eyes to not only the possibilities, but also to the solutions. “Almost half the graduating class ends up taking this course,” explained Beale. “They come through year after year and see the Grade 12s presentations and see what it takes to pull off a project like this. It’s a great experience for them.” He also stressed that the course appeals to the fact that these students are about to enter adulthood, with related problems and expectations. “The goal has always been to make it about broader social issues and have the students use critical thinking skills to find real life solutions. They’ve done a great job.”

Show value All around us, we hear the constant discussion about how to best prepare our young people to become productive members of society: give them the skills they’ll need to succeed in the work force and get them trained so they can work in industries where there are actually jobs available. If we really want to address this so-called “skills shortage” amongst our up-and-coming workforce, maybe we should be encouraging a different type of learning – or at least diversifying teaching approaches – earlier in our children’s education, and more often. If we’re finding that young people don’t want to go into trades careers because they’ve never seen the value of labour in making the world go ’round, let’s show them that – and get them seeing it earlier in their lives. There are some great co-op programs available for students once they reach high school – some of which they can even take for university credit to give them a head start on their chosen career. But we still won’t see enough kids being interested in taking those programs and pursuing those careers if we don’t turn them on to the value of working with their hands earlier in life. We need to show them the value of creating physical, useful things rather than focusing solely on teaching theories and concepts.

Cutting classes The practice of providing free tuition to graduated adults seeking to upgrade their education ends May 1, when tuition for high school courses such as English 12 and Biology 12 for people over 19 and who have completed Grade 12 will no longer be free. People needing those courses to get into college or university will have to pay $500 to take them. Some say this is a sham and a tattering of the B.C. government’s much-vaunted education guarantee. Others say it’s better to put scarce resources into literacy courses and K-12 education, or even grants and bursaries to educate workers for high-demand jobs. There is a case that could be made for a break on fees for young, low-income students struggling to upgrade their education — after all, society benefits from a skilled labour force. But for now, nobody seems to be making that argument and, after May 1, all graduated adults over 19 will be expected to pay the fee, regardless of their circumstances, and they will have to factor that cost into their life and career plans. – Black Press

ethic, above all else. Maybe the insight to be gained is that sacrifices of every previous generation paved the way for today’s citizens to prioritize happiness over worry. Some point in our species evolution will be as good as it ever was, and it would be tragic if that era passed as under-appreciated as every other. Reincarnation beliefs notwithstanding, if we all only have one life to live, then whichever time frame we happen to inhabit has to be our own ‘best,’ right? There will always be challenges, whether winning a war or eventually reaching the stars. Since human nature aspires to higher purposes, each generation requires issues on which to define itself. Capitalism and democracy and technology and our own drive have led us light years from the short, nasty and brutish plains of Africa. Therefore, maintaining today that things are getting worse is the same as feeling scared that we’ve come too far, too fast. If so, then climate change or environmental limitations will reduce our number. But despairing for such a future based on romanticized recollections about how much better it was back in the day lacks perspective – and gives youngsters plenty reason to reach for their iPhones. THE NEWS/letters Sexist sour grapes Editor, The News: Re: Read tops campaign spending (The News, Feb. 25). I have to ask why Mike Morden stated he lost the election for two reasons? The second reason was not given, but the first reason was because he was not a woman. The quote stated: “It gives her a strategic advantage when the rest of them are men”. This is like saying it had nothing to do with the quality of the campaign she ran, her intelligence, her communication skills, or her grasp of the issues we face as a community. The addled voters just wanted a woman for a change. Sounds like sexist sour grapes to me. Brenda Exner Maple Ridge

online comments Yes, new pool Jen Pacman: Re: ‘Why not just build new pool?’ (The News, March 4). I agree with Councillor Robson. I’m a homeowner in Maple Ridge and new to the city – I was very disappointed with how boring and shoddy the current pool is when I enrolled my toddler in swimming lessons. We make the weekly drive to Hyde Creek in Port Coquitlam to use that pool instead. I would like to see my taxes going towards a new facility that better reflects activities the citizens want. @ E-mail letters to editor@mapleridgenews.com.

Pay extra for transit privilege Editor, The News: For anyone with a memory, let me remind you about Expo ’86. SkyTrain was built, in part as a premium transportation system for the fair. After the buildings were dismantled, the property was sold for a whooping $16 million dollars. I recall the taxpayers (me) had to pay for the environmental clean-up, as well. This was prime heavy industrial property for well near a century, so the toxins that lay in the soil were nothing to sneeze at. I don’t recall the price tag, but to be sure, it ate into the $16 million quite a bit. Today, we have prime real estate in all those lands. Who paid for it? You and me, the taxpayers. What makes it prime real estate? Well, the view, the location and, perhaps, its four SkyTrain stations. This week’s news announced the world’s billionaires, according to Forbes, and at No. 177, worth $7.5 billion is the man who managed to flip this $16-million property to ... I can’t even imagine what it is worth today. I don’t blame Jimmy Pattison and I have no problem with free enterprise. He obviously put money of his own into

We are looking for volunteers to be part of the Citizen’s Committee for the Mayor’s Open Government Task Force. Our Council wants to be ‘gold standard’ when it comes to transparency, accountability, collaboration and engagement in local government. Every revolution needs leaders. The Citizen’s Task Force will reach out and find out what citizens are looking for to increase their understanding and participation in local issues. The Citizen’s Committee will develop recommendations and present them to the members of the Mayor’s Task Force and provide citizen feedback as Council develops their strategy. the redevelopment and his holdings have paid monumental taxes to the provincial government and the City of Vancouver. I can’t even say this is the only reason why he has $7.5 billion today. I am sure he has made other wise investments. Others made a killing on these lands, as well, and there were many speculators, nearby property owners and real estate agents that became instant millionaires. They probably paid their taxes. Here is the point I want to make: I paid for this. I paid for SkyTrain to make this a valuable piece of real estate. Is it too much to add a minute fraction of additional property tax to those lands that will go directly to TransLink? Can we not take a small percentage off the commission of the agents who sell property within these lands? We have to pay an additional tax to buy a used car in this province, so why can’t the province take a transit levy to sell property in these lands? If you think this property is unique, look at other developments. There are Metrotown, Whalley, and a new mall on Sea Island, new developments at Oakridge Mall and Brentwood Mall, there’s downtown New Westminster and Sapperton. Every development around the SkyTrain stations can pay for TransLink improvements. We have given them the infrastructure that leads

to their success, so why should they not pay extra for the privilege? I have no problem with a transit plan going forth. I just don’t think the same people that have paid and paid and paid and paid (times 20) should be paying more. I don’t think the same people who have squandered our contribution should be getting more or running things in the future.

“Yes, you can say that less congestion benefits us all, but it obviously has benefitted some more than others.” Yes, you can say that less congestion benefits us all, but it obviously has benefitted some more than others. I have often been reminded that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome. Well, 20 forms of taxes have left our pockets in some way or form to support TransLink. Will No. 21 be the magic cure-all? Nick Sanger Maple Ridge

Pitt crews put out house fire on Katzie reserve Smoke alarms recently added By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

Quick action by the Pitt Meadows Fire Department contained a fire on the Katzie First Nations reserve Wednesday afternoon after a blaze broke out in a house on Walter Florence Road. “We had a working fire of a two-storey residence, a garage fire,”

said assistant fire chief Rob Chatton. “That ended up extending into the house that the garage [carport] was attached to.” Five trucks and 12 crew members got a quick start on the fire, however. “We were pretty lucky. We had the fire knocked down in about 20 minutes. “We hit it hard, we hit it fast. We were able to limit the damage.” The fire started at 2 p.m. in the carport and

Ridge Meadows RCMP are currently investigating how the fire began. While firefighters saved the house, there was smoke and some fire-related damage to a ground-floor bedroom and the attic. One wall of a neighbouring house was damaged by the radiant heat from the fire. Chatton said there were no injuries and everyone got out of the house. He credited a new

program between the fire department and Katzie First Nation, in which the fire department inspects homes and installs smoke alarms. The home that caught fire had recently been fitted with smoke alarms, which alerted residents inside. “All three smoke alarms were activated to notify the residents to get out. “It’s a good program and we’ll continue to do it.”

Second gas station robbed Monday Police are checking into a robbery of a Maple Ridge Chevron gas station Monday evening, following an earlier heist of another Chevron station in Pitt Meadows, Feb. 21. Ridge Meadows RCMP say at about 5 p.m. Monday, a man in his late 20s or early 30s walked into the Chevron station on Dewdney Trunk Road and 216th Street. He produced a weapon and demanded cash. The clerk handed over the money and the man walked out, last seen headed east along Dewdney Trunk Road. “The store’s clerk did a very commendable job by complying with the

suspect’s demands and remaining safe throughout dealing with this person,” said Insp. Dan Splinter. The suspect is described as about 5’9” tall with slender build and acne scars on his chin. He was wearing a baseball hat and hoodie.

Police are investigating other robberies to see if they can be linked to the same suspect. The robbery at the Pitt Meadows Chevron on Harris Road on Feb. 21 involved two heavyset white men who also used a weapon. They took off in a silver-grey

four-door sedan. Earlier, on Feb. 2, a robber escaped with some cash after holding up the 7-Eleven on Lougheed Highway at 212th Street. That suspect is described as a white male in his mid-20s, 5’,4” tall, with a slim build and blond hair.

Coun. Janis Elkerton agreed it would be a scar on traditional Katzie First Nations territory, and Coun. Bill Dingwall said blasting and truck traffic would be a disruption to area residents six days a week. Two such residents attended the meeting to voice their opposition to the new quarry, based on noise and the danger of truck traffic. Residents also opposed an expansion of Pitt River Quarries, operated by Lafarge Canada Inc. by Sheridan Hill since the 1960s, but that was approved in 2011. “My house shakes constantly when they blast, and I can’t even imagine how bad it’s going to be once they move down to

the other side, said one resident Tuesday. The Ministry of Energy and Mines sent council a notice of work on Jan. 30, and it lists the applicant as a Maple Ridge company known as Meadows Quarry, with Bob McLean as the principal contact. A representative of the company would not offer a comment about the proposed quarry operation, or council’s reaction to it. The company would be allowed to clear trees, remove soils, drill and blast, crush rock, stockpile it, and reclaim the site as it is mined. These operations can run yearround, Monday to Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., the notice allows that it and may be necessary to operate outside of these times. City director of opera-

The city is recommending that the ministry require the quarry operator to first hold public meetings, and have a “meaningful consultation process with Katzie First Nation. “We need to strongly advocate, because we lost this last time, Becker told council. “We had no impact on the decision making process. The city would receive 38 cents per ton in road levy, which should offer about $90,000 per year for Pitt Meadows, if the new quarry proceeds. Staff anticipate that repaving costs would outstrip the road-use levies. Trucks would travel along McNeil Road, to Neaves Road, then south to Old Dewdney Trunk. The levies would rise to 41 cents in 2016.

Becker said the city and the Katzie have not been consulted in a meaningful way, and added the proponents have dealt with the native band in a way that is “dismissive and insulting. He also said council failed in its first attempts to keep a quarry off another section of Sheridan Hill. Study claims savings will offset cost of transit tax By Jef f Nage l Black Press

Metro Vancouver mayors say their plan for transit upgrades would save residents much more money over the long run than they’d pay in extra sales tax if this spring’s referendum on the proposal passes. A report commissioned by the mayors estimates the savings for a typical family at $360 per year by 2030 in combined fuel, vehicle and other costs, including the value of time savings. It estimates that advantage would climb to $1,100 per year by 2045 versus a base case scenario without the proposed upgrades and worsening congestion as Metro’s population grows. Those are net savings minus the $125 per year an average household would pay as a result of the extra 0.5 per cent sales tax to be levied in Metro Vancouver. Two thirds of the estimated savings are attributed to reduced travel time, while one third is the result of direct reductions in out-of-pocket transportation costs. The mayors’ council released only a four-page summary of HDR Consulting’s findings without providing details on methodology. Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore predicted some households will save even more – an estimated $10,000 a year over and above HDR’s estimates – if they are able to give up a vehicle as improved transit service arrives. “More people will have the option to use the bus, which is a less expensive way of getting around than driving,” Moore said. He said even drivers will spend less time on the road and money on gas and maintenance because of congestion relief. Transit improvements – including a 25 per cent increase in bus service, new B-Line express bus routes and new rapid transit lines in Vancouver and Surrey – are expected to greatly increase the number of households in the region that live close enough to frequent transit service to rely heavily

Savings for a typical family would be $360 per year by 2030 in combined fuel, vehicle and other costs, including the value of time savings, according to report. on it. The mayors’ council estimates round-trip travel times by transit will be cut by at least 40 minutes between certain town centres, including Maple Ridge-Cloverdale and Coquitlam-Langley, a route that would be served by new B lines. No campaign head Jordan Bateman called the report “flimsy.” He said it doesn’t take

into account the opportunity cost of how families might benefit if they weren’t subjected to the extra tax and could instead spend that money on different priorities or invest it. “The mayors refuse to acknowledge this is a regressive tax that hurts poorer families more than richer families,” Bateman said. He said poor families

can’t think decades down the road because “they’re trying to put groceries on the table this week” and added it may be risky for planners to use such a long horizon as well. “No one knows what the world is going to look like in 30 years,” Bateman said, suggesting self-driving cars may end up carrying many people some day instead of public transit.

Established in 1979, the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society ties two communities together with the common bond of compassion and support to children and adults facing end of life issues. Have you worked with someone with a life limiting illness or who has lost a loved one? Eventually, we may all come in contact with someone who is going through a similar life experience. We often wonder, what can I say? How can I help? Society is still hesitant at approaching these conversations. However, in order to maintain a healthy and productive work, school or home environment, we need to find ways of opening that dialog.

Good hearing, poor comprehension? The number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newlydeveloped hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear. A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the highfrequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear. The person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not

Ginette van Wijngaarden, at Connect Hearing, advises people with hearing loss on the new hearing chip, together with her colleagues. consider themselves to have a hearing problem. They can hear deep tones with no issue, and often put difficulty understanding speech down to unclear pronunciation. However, the time soon comes when problems with comprehension become annoying. A new hearing chip has been developed. Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing chip that restores speech comprehension, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new AudĂŠo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. First, a hearing test

and speech comprehension analysis is done. Where inner-ear damage is present, a software program analyzes the difference relative to normal hearing. These values are then input into the new Venture hearing chip in the AudĂŠo V, which precisely takes into account and balances the frequency range of the person being tested. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OSâ€? plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation. Interested people can register for a no-obligation demonstration of the AudĂŠo V by calling 888.408.7377

Sorento offering choice By Zack Spencer

K

ia has only been in the Canadian marketplace for 16 years, but in that time has been able to utilize the resources of its parent company, Hyundai, to help carve out a distinct brand. Design is a big part of the Kia’s success and this all-new third generation Kia Sorento is a perfect example of this approach. With 50 design awards under its belt, thanks to the direction of chief designer Peter Schreyer, Kia has pushed hard on the accelerator to update designs quickly. The last Sorento was introduced just two years ago. Not only has the design been evolving, but Kia now has the same 2.0L turbo four-cylinder available on five-passenger versions of the Sorento, something Hyundai had exclusively in the Santa Fe until now. • Looks: Since Kia and Hyundai share the vast majority of its platforms and engines, the design and packaging are what makes them unique. This Sorento is sold as a five-passenger or seven-passenger versions utilizing the same vehicle dimensions. In addition, Kia believes the lower priced, $27,495 base four-cylinder model will be attractive for shopping in the smaller compact SUV space that might like more space. The more expensive turbo and V6 equipped versions will compete in the mid-sized SUV space. The design is more athletic and solid thanks to a wider, longer and lower body that is accented by a new grille, headlamps, optional LED fog lights and new rear lighting treatment. Unfortunately, to get navigation, LED marker lights, Xenon headlamps, LED taillights and the 19-inch wheels, the buyer needs to choose the top SX trim. • Inside: This is no minor update, on the heals of a major update just two years ago, the Sorento dash and interior materials have all been updated along with the layout and design. There is a pleasant look and feel to the dash; the top SX trim is the only one with the beautiful eight-inch centre screen, with rich graphics and easy to use interface. The other models get the four-inch screen or just a radio readout. Both the four-inch and eight-inch get a backup camera, the base model gets rear sonar sensors. The good news is

heated seats are standard on all models. The middle EX trim is where most shoppers will buy, with features like leather seats, 10-way power driver’s seat, heated steering wheel and a seven-inch screen inside the instrument cluster. The top SX gets all the best stuff including the eightinch navigation screen, heated rear seats, cooled front seats and upgraded Nappa leather. It’s a shame the bigger centre screen cannot be used on more trim levels. • Drive: Since Kia has added a new 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine into the mix, the ordering guide is a bit more complex. The base LX five-seat is the only one sold with the 185hp 2.4L four-cylinder engine, in both front wheel and all wheel drive. All other five-passenger models get the 240hp turbo and all seven-passenger

The 2015 Kia Sorento has design changes. models get the 290hp V6. The great news for five passenger buyers is that the turbo has more torque than the V6 and runs on regular grade gas. The V6 would be my choice thanks to its silky smooth power and more consistent fuel economy. Anyone who has ever driven a turbo knows that the power is great, but if pushed, it will use more fuel. The all-wheel-drive models now have a centre lock to continually lock the

power with 50 per cent going to the rear wheels. In addition, there is a new drive mode that changes the engine, transmission and steering feel for normal mode to sport or ECO for better fuel economy. • Verdict: If you are in the market for a smaller SUV, this bigger Sorento is now an option, and mid-sized buyers can choose from a turbo or V6 and five or seven passengers, there is a lot of choice.

Giuseppe du Toit leads the B.C. Premier League in scoring thanks to his reliable penalty and convert kicking, and his tactical kicking is another strong aspect of his game.

A key player for Team Canada Victoria Vike du Toit takes on U.S. with U-20s By Neil Corbett sports@mapleridgenews.com

C

anadian rugby has two key matches against the U.S. later this month to determine whether the junior national team gets to play for a world championship. If Canada wins, it will be because a Maple Ridge player has a great series. “He’s going to need to play well for them to beat the U.S. and advance,” said Doug Tate, who is Giuseppe du Toit’s coach with the University of Victoria Vikes. Fly half du Toit will need to tackle well, distribute the ball, nail his penalty kicks, and relieve the pressure on his team with smart tactical kicks. It will be a surprise if du Toit doesn’t hit the kicks he should. He’ll coolly slot a kick through the uprights from as far as 50 yards out. Penalty kicking has him leading the Premier League with 81 points in eight games. “He doesn’t seem to worry about the pressure,” said Tate. He has hit 17 penalty kicks and 15 converts, worth three and two

points, respectively. Du Toit hasn’t yet scored a try on the season, but his coach says the Vikes are loaded with thoroughbred backs, and the sophomore’s job is to set them up. “He makes good decisions. He’s played a lot of rugby.” He’s practically lived rugby. Giuseppe’s father is Dr. Peet du Toit, a local physician and also the team doctor for the national team. He had the same role with teams in South Africa, where rugby is to sports fans what hockey is in Canada. The little Giuseppe was in those dressing rooms with his dad, growing up in the game. When the family moved to Canada, Giuseppe got involved with the Ridge Meadows Bruins youth rugby program. He said coach Malcolm Knox convinced him that he would make a great fly half, and the coach kept his passion for the game burning. Giuseppe attended Maple Ridge Christian, but halfway through his Grade 10 year asked his father if he could transfer to Shawnigan Lake School. It’s located in a rugby hotbed on Vancouver Island, and the Stags rugby team has been a springboard to university programs. After two and a half seasons there, and a pair of provincial

rugby championships, he was recruited by universities. Du Toit chose Victoria, in part because of its proximity to Rugby Canada and the national team programs. His first year playing in the B.C. Premier League was an adjustment for an 18-year-old playing against grown men, some of whom are already on Canada’s national team. A thundering tackle left him with a broken back. Not a debilitating break, but a crack that could worsen and become serious. It led to a frustrating season for him, and the entire Vikes team. This year, they’re healthy and success has followed – the Vikes are 7-2-1 and sitting in second place in the tough Premier League, just behind the UBC Thunderbirds. “It’s just a lot better team effort and focus by the guys,” said du Toit. During the off-season he had hit the gym – lots of squats and power clean and snatches – and came back a much thicker 19-year-old. His tackling and defence are better, and he’s confident attacking. Tactical kicking is one of the last options. “I like to run the ball a lot more. It’s better to keep the ball in hand, and keep possession.” When the offence breaks down and his options run out, he can

hammer the ball almost the length of the field. On Tuesday and Saturday du Toit’s Canadian Under-20 side will play two exhibition matches against Romania. That will be a tune up for a massive two-game series with the Team USA on March 23 and 27 on Vancouver Island. The rivals meet with much at stake. “Any game against the States is a big game, with lots of passion,” said du Toit. But this qualifier will determine the North American representative for the Junior World Rugby Trophy, to be contested in Portugal this May. “It’s like the under-20 World Cup,” explained du Toit. The aggregate score after two matches will determine the winner. These are huge opportunities for an athlete with ambition, like du Toit. He’s studying to become a doctor, but wants to play for Canada’s senior team, and dreams of finding his path into professional rugby in England or France The eyes of Canadian Rugby will be on those 15 teenagers this month, in some of the biggest games of du Toit’s life. “I just want to play as well and consistently as I can.”

Earl “The Curl” King and his foursome (Bruce Nelson, Arnie Melissen and Big Al Goldberg) have moved into third place in the Haney Masters Curling League and are planning on staying there, The move up the standings following a victory over the Ted Gangnes squad (Al Herd, Reg Nelligan, Dave Bradley) in Wednesday”s draw. Bill “Big Dog” McDowell continues to guard second place, nipping at the heels of Peter Koehler who is in danger of becoming complacent, having been atop the standings, it seems, since the Richardson era. Other winners in the Wednesday draw were Angelo “The Godfather” Masaro (Jock Anderson, Stan Melanson, Chris Martin), the Koehler Krushers (Chris English, William Menkveld, Norm Sulz), Andy “The Flash” Ferguson (Gregg Hook, Jack Flottorp, Tom Little), the Gary Sawatsky Sliders (Chuck McCafferty, John Jacobs, David Christensen), and the Jim Keenan Kurlismatics (Bob Goos, Russell Patience, Bob Asher).

Golden Ears women in mixed finals sports@mapleridgenews.com

The final line-up for the 2015 AMJ Campbell B.C. Mixed Championship has been confirmed and it contains four female curlers from the Golden Ears Winter Club, on different teams. The eight-team field for the event, which will take place in Kelowna March 19-22, was decided after a weekend of playdowns across B.C. Silver medallists from the B.C. men’s, women’s, senior men’s and junior men’s championships will all be hoping to go one better and take gold when they compete at the final provincial event of the season. Dean Joanisse, who was runner-up at

the 2015 Canadian Direct Insurance B.C. Men’s Championship, will skip a team that includes two other provincial medallists. Joanisse won the A event at the Lower Mainland playdowns alongside third Shannon Aleksic and second Tyler Orme, who both took bronze in this year’s provincials, and lead Kelsey Steiger. Aleksic and Steiger are both with the local club. Joanisse will be joined at the championship by fellow B.C. men’s silver medallist Paul Cseke, whose team won the B event. The rink consists of skip Cseke, third Kristen Recksiedler, who was a 2015 B.C. Scotties bronze medallist, second Will Sutton and lead Trysta Vandale. Both women also curl out of Maple Ridge.

The two Lower Mainland C event qualifiers are also skipped by provincial runnersup. B.C. senior men’s silver medallist Mike Freeman will head-up a team of third Kim McLandress, second Bill Dalzell and lead Victoria Murphy. They will be joined at the 2015 AMJ Campbell B.C. Mixed Championship by Cody Tanaka, the B.C. junior men’s runner-up, and his team of third Katie Sim, second Brian Cole and lead Chantel Kosmynka. The 2015 AMJ Campbell B.C. Mixed Championship will be held at Kelowna Curling Club from March 19-22. The winners of the event will go on to represent B.C. at the Canadian championship, which takes place later this year.

Garden beds looking for help early By Kevin Gillies

T

here might be some clouds, and a sprinkle or two, this weekend, but looking at the weather the past week and the upcoming one, gardening season is upon us. Trees are blooming and horticultural growth is everywhere — the lawn’s already been mowed twice already. When it comes to garden beds, now is the time to get out, and clear the waste material to prepare for planting anew. But awakening the garden to a new growing season is about more than soil and seedlings. This rite of spring is a tonic to the gardener, as well. Some tips to get the garden and home going for spring. • Clear drainage ditches: Leaves and other debris can often gather in drainage areas over the winter. Now is the time to ensure that these spring showers have adequate runoff. And, as spring seedlings do best in soil that drains well, and because vegetative growth is at a low point in early spring, this is the easiest time of year for clearing drainage ditches. Be sure to put the cleared material – usually dead leaves, and small branches and other natural waste material – into the compost. Spring compost piles are commonly short on carbon-rich materials, and every addition helps. • Repair garden structures: This is the best time of the year to fix any bowed sides to raised beds, or repair trellises and fencing. Wet winter soil can strain the wood on raised garden beds, so any bowed or leaning sides should be fixed now. Dig back the soil behind the bowed side and drive new stakes in, on the inside of the sideboards, with a slight lean inward. Push the sideboards up to the stakes and screw the sideboard into the stakes. Trellises and fencing are also best repaired in the early spring as there’s less growth and roots to work around. However, setting new fence posts is better done after spring’s rains have drained through the ground.

This is the best time of the year to build or fix raised garden beds.

A high water table will fill post holes with water as you dig. • Weed and mulch: Garden bed weeds, with their shallow roots, are easiest and best pulled now. So is covering your garden’s bare spots with mulch to minimize the growth of new weeds. An appropriate amount of mulch to add would be to a depth of about three or four inches. Black sheeting can also be used to cover garden beds, before planting, as a way to help prevent weeds.

onions. • When it’s dry enough, top-dress beds: Top-dress garden beds with compost or wellseasoned manure in preparation for planting. Resist the urge to dig the bed; established beds have a complex soil ecosystem which is best left undisturbed. Nutrients added from the top will work their way down into the soil. Get out and enjoy the Lower Mainland’s early spring sunshine in your gardens.

Make sure that when you’re adding mulch, you keep it a few inches away from tree trunks and the stems of plants to help reduce rot on the stems of young plants and to protect the bark of young fruit trees. • Plant early spring vegetables: Garden soil is ready to go once it is free of ice crystals and it crumbles easily. Soil that is too wet is easily compacted, which reduces soil aeration. Common early spring crops are peas, spinach, lettuces and leeks. Follow these crops with broccoli, cabbage, radishes, kale, turnips, new potatoes and

Gas prices soar above $1.30 despite lagging crude oil

2015 Babies

Analyst cites tightening supply By Jef f Nage l Black Press

Gasoline prices in Metro Vancouver have soared 30 per cent since bottoming out at around $1 per litre in mid-January. And a petroleum industry analyst says there are multiple factors motorists can blame for the sudden pain they’re now feeling at the pump. Refineries across North America have been shut down due to cold weather, a strike and even an explosion, said Jason Parent, vicepresident of consulting for MJ Ervin and Associates. “A fair amount of refining capacity came offline and it really did tighten up supply,” he said. That’s been amplified by scheduled shutdowns for maintenance and something else that happens like clockwork as spring looms – more vehicles take to the road as winter recedes, gas supplies shrink further and pump prices rise. “It’s not just you guys, it’s happening across Canada,” said Parent, adding the wholesale price gas stations pay has shot up sharply in recent weeks. Drivers struggle to understand how gas prices could be so high again when the price of crude oil is still way down. The average Metro Vancouver price for regular gas of $1.31 as of Monday afternoon is back to approximately the same level it was in early October. Back then, crude oil was above $85 a barrel compared to about $50 now after a slight rebound from its January lows. Parent said the divergence of the two commodities underscores the fact that the crude oil component cost is a small part of the overall picture that drives gas prices compared to

ROSS, Joseph Macdonald January 3, 1924 – February 26, 2015

Joseph MacDonald Ross, age 91 or Kelowna, BC died the afternoon of February 26th in Kelowna General Hospital after several weeks of failing health. The last three weeks of his life allowed time for him to spend with his children and other family members. Joseph MacDonald Ross was born in Drumheller, Alberta on Jan 3rd, 1924 to Joseph Ross and Jean Ross (MacDonald). He was the first born of three children. His brother Frederick Ross, and Sister Jean Ross. Born of Scottish immigrants with thick Scottish accents. The boys were raised by their Father who was a miner that moved the family from Drumheller to Kenora, On then to Bralorne, BC. Joe grew up during the dirt poor hungry thirties (the Great Depression). Joe started mining at a young age in Bralorne’s deep gold mine. He joined the Seaforth Highlanders in the infantry for World War II. Upon arriving in Europe was sent to Italy and fought in the 1st Canadian brigade of the British 8th Army. Joe fought in some of the toughest and bloodiest battles in history – with far more casualties than the days of the Roman Legions. He fought in the Battle of Mount Cassino against the German 10th and He helped liberate Rome. After the war Joe returned to British Columbia and married his wife of 52 years Anne (Unger). They eventually settled in Maple Ridge, BC where they raised five children. He worked at the largest cedar mill in the world for 29 years. Joe loved playing games and competing. He played hockey until he was 70. He skied for the first time at age 65. He loved golf and fishing. Almost every game he played he did it well. He always provided support for his children’s activities – coaching hockey, driving kids to games, umpiring or in any other capacity. He was an active member of the Maple Ridge Minor Hockey association for years. Joe and his wife Anne, through hard work and good morals, established their family as a respected and prominent sports family in Maple Ridge. Upon retiring Joe and Anne moved to Kelowna BC. His Wife Anne predeceases him. He is survived by his daughters Joanne (Neils), Julie (Tony) and Jeannie (Barry) as well as his two sons Bryan (Shannon) and Joe (Wanda), 14 grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren (with two on the way). He is also survived by his sister Jean and his second wife Eleanor He will be missed dearly by his family. The Ross family funeral will be held on Sunday March 8th at 11am at Springfield Funeral Home in Kelowna. Mary passed away peacefully in The Residence of Mission (TRIM) at the age of 90. She leaves behind her loving daughter Fran (Mike) Harty; son George (Cheryl) Holland; grandchildren Michelle (Nolan) Riley; Athena (Ron) Paling; Matt (Diana) Harty; Rod (Erin) Aubichon; Sheri George; 11 great grandchildren; sister Ruth (Leonard) Holland; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Mary was born in Melaval, Saskatchewan and moved to the Loveridge dairy farm in Pitt Meadows, BC when she was eight years old. She completed her senior matriculation in Maple Ridge and was a former employee/ resident at the Bank of Commerce on Washington St., Mission, BC (now known as the Mission Museum on First Avenue). After World War II, in 1946, she married her childhood sweetheart, veteran Lawrence Holland, and they settled in Pitt Meadows. The love of the north country drew them to a log cabin in Quesnel where they lived until 1953, and then to Maple Ridge for 47 years, retiring in Mission in 1991. She was renowned for her home baked pies at the Pana Bode diner in Maple Ridge. Her love of music was expressed in the many instruments she played. Mary’s enjoyment of family especially her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren leave a legacy of cherished memories. Mary was predeceased by her father Byron Loveridge; her mother Frances; her brothers Tom and George; and her sisters Lucy and Mabel. Mary was greatly loved and will be sorely missed. A Memorial Service will be held at Bakerview Community Crematorium and Celebration Centre, 34863 Cemetery Avenue, Mission, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2015. Our special thanks to Dr. Peter Barnsdale, and especially to the staff and volunteers at TRIM. In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
