Chef Schiller wins Stone Soup Challenge It was an impressive community turnout for the final showdown of the Kootenay Granite Stone Soup Challenge.
More than 170 people gathered in the Grand Ballroom at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort and Convention Centre
Monday, March 9, 2015 Kootenay News Advertiser to sample the soups of Chef Shelby Schiller of BJ’s Diner and Creekside Pub in Kimberley and Kathy Morey, Salvation Army cook. The crowd buzzed with energy and conversation as they enjoyed the two soup
creations, and tables seemed to be equally divided between Morey’s rosemary chicken and Schiller’s beef vegetable soup with cabbage. However, the panel of chef and local celebrity judges, by the smallest of margins, seemed to
agree: Schiller’s soup reigned supreme. “We are absolutely thrilled with how the community stepped up and supported this event,” says Riley Wilcox, executive director of the Cranbrook and District Community

Celebrating 50 years of youth ambassadors
Photo submitted
The Sam Steele Youth Ambassador Pageant marks its 50th year. This year marks the 50th Sweetheart of Sam Steele Youth Ambassador Pageant in Cranbrook and to recognize this significant milestone, the theme for this year’s Sam Steele Days is “50 Years of Heart.” “The Sweetheart Youth Ambassador Program has been an integral part of the Sam Steele Days Community Festival and an outstanding program for our city’s young women. We all look forward to celebrating with them,” says Sam Steele Society representative, Laura Kennedy. 50 Years of Heart is the theme for the Sweetheart Program
itself this year and all former candidates are being invited to take part in the celebrations in June. “Over the past 50 years, the Program has changed in many ways; however, the one thing that hasn’t changed is the amazing women who have been – and continue to be – a part of it,” says Sweetheart Program Assistant Loree Duczek. “We are inviting all of our former candidates to join us for Sam Steele Days weekend in June. From the pageant, where we will celebrate our 2015 youth ambassadors, to the parade and more, there are lots of fun things planned with a
few surprises along the way!” With 50 years in the community, the Sweetheart Program has a special place in Cranbrook’s History. It’s Coordinator, Karin Penner, has been at the helm since day one. “Karin truly believes in the youth of this community and has helped shape and inspire so many young ladies. For anyone to give 50 years to a volunteer program speaks to their commitment and passion and she will be so excited to welcome back many former candidates and catch up with them in June,” adds Duczek. The Sweetheart Youth Ambassador Program is a self-development program for Grade 11 girls. The Program is aimed at encouraging self-confidence, a greater understanding of the importance of community service and developing leadership skills. The participants in the Program go through six months of training from January to June. “We are very lucky to have a number of community members who volunteer to share their time
and expertise with our team,” explains Duczek. “The candidates learn lifelong skills including public speaking, financial management/ budgeting, time management, goal setting, interview skills, resume writing, etiquette and more. They also learn more about the City of Cranbrook, its history and economy and the Ktunaxa Nation and its history.” In addition, candidates receive a WorldHost certificate and Toastmasters International Speechcraft certificate through the Program. “I went through the Program years ago and continue to be a part of it because I truly believe the leadership skills and personal development candidates receive open doors of opportunity for their future,” adds Duczek. Sam Steele Days runs June 18-21, 2015. The 50th Sweetheart of Sam Steele Youth Ambassador Pageant will be held Friday, June 19, 2015. For more information visit: www.samsteeledays.org

It offers an important benefit for businesses, not only to meet the students who are being trained at College of the Rockies, but to reach secondary school students who are thinking of the future and others who are currently unemployed but interested in exploring new options,” comments Keith Powell, publisher of Kootenay Business Magazine. The Weekday View
Opinion: Good time to be a local petitioner by Brian Coombs To haze, relocate or kill local deer was at one point a current question, but as the cull is going on right now, this appears to be a question for next year. The important thing to note now is that if your group is vocal enough, even if it is small, City Hall will do its best to accomodate you. Mayor Lee Pratt pointed out that the public was 70 per cent in favour of a cull in the last survey. While that is inaccurate in that only about 900 local responses were received for a city of around 19,000 (meaning just 5 per cent responded), it is true that of the people that cared to do the survey, most (642) were in favour. This also means that around 95 per cent of Cranbrook’s population don’t care one way or another. And let’s face it, for most people seeing a deer in a field, or in a back yard is an occurrence that barely registers. There are some that complain about deer eating their gardens and some that take steps to make sure that doesn’t happen. Some people talk about a deer that gave birth to a very cute fawn in their yard
and others talk about a deer giving chase to their (unleashed) dog. As a matter of fact, this office has only had one person send in a letter about a deer attack, and that was on an unleashed dog. For 95 per cent of Cranbrook residents, the deer issue appears not to be an issue at all. If it was, they would have either picked up a survey at City Hall or do what most of the respondents did and complete it online. There was plenty of publicity leading up the survey. A few might remember when the city was looking to build an arena suitable for WHL play. A petition with more than 5,000 signatures was given to city hall, giving city leaders a strong mandate to look into how to make it happen—and eventually it did. It took from 1993 to 2000 to make it a reality though. So it is a little confusing at just how much time was spent and how quickly city hall responded to the urban deer population in the city. With so many people obviously not caring why would the city spend money, repeatedly on a cull? For that matter, at the last meeting regarding the cull, the city staff recommended against this
cull and suggested reapplying for a permit in the fall. But the money had to be spent and the deer had to be killed right now, because that is what the 642 people who responded that way to the survey wanted. Now this is bad news for the people in the city who live here because they like the fact that the occasional deer will wander through their yard, but if the city continues to function this way, it is great news for petitioners. Think about it. If you have a pet cause that you can get 642 people to sign on to, the city will, by precedent, get on it right away, especially if you can convince people it is a public safety issue. Want a bylaw stating that city bars (because of possible frostbite to smokers) must put in a heated smoking lounge? Want to make it mandatory (because it is safer for all) for people to salute when addressing you? Want to make (because they could trip on their pants and die) droopy pants against the law? Just get 641 friends to sign your petition and the city will make it a priority. Just knowing that 642 people out of 19,000 is the threshold for action in the city is a warming thought. Except for the deer, of course—they get a bolt gun to the head.
Bill Green named as Green Party candidate
Photo submitted
Green Party candidate Bill Green. for The Advertiser
Kootenay-Columbia Green Party candidate Bill Green says the chances of the Green Party shouldn’t be underestimated in the upcoming federal election widely expected to take place Oct. 19. “Across Canada and in BC in particular, we believe many ridings will be ‘in play’ for the Greens and we’re not underestimating our
own chances right here in Kootenay-Columbia,” says Green. Green, who ran in Kootenay-Columbia in the last federal election for the Greens, says since winning the nomination in a party vote Dec. 6, 2014, he’s been putting together an election team of solid professionals and volunteers. “I look forward to running in a riding with new boundaries that now include Nelson, Kaslo and Salmo, all areas of strong Green Party support,” says Green. Green, (62) is a biologist and manager who has lived in the riding for more than 20 years and is founding director of the Canadian Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fisheries Commission. He’s also worked in mining exploration, community
development consulting, environmental planning and taught high school science in Papua, New Guinea, and throughout BC Married and a father of four, Green says rivers and streams have always had a special place in his life. “I’ve always been drawn to water, fish and aquatic systems, both for recreation and work. I have worked passionately to protect and care for aquatic ecosystems since the mid-1970’s.” At the same time, Green says he understands the need for economic measures to produce a healthy economy and environmental sustainability. “Many elements of a green economy are already thriving in our region in terms of forest management, reforestation, mining and mining reclamation and environmental management.” If elected, Green says he will work hard to build a “green economy” in the region.
“The federal government can help grow the green economy in many ways: through adjustment to tax policies, incentive programs for green energy, development of energy efficient residential construction programs and green infrastructure,” he says. Green says his campaign will focus on six core principles in the coming election – reforming our democracy, developing a Green economy, reconciling with First Nations, replacing aging infrastructure with sustainable Green infrastructure, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting Canada as a force for peace in the world. “These principles are not a pipe dream. They are achievable and they will build a better Canada. I have a strong campaign team, working hard to promote these Green principles and my candidacy during the campaign.”
