Despite a lack of snow that forced Phoenix Mountain Ski Hill to close early, staff remains optimistic about the future. Chris Nason, area manager, said they were able to do a full opening just a little later than they were hoping. “We were able to open up on Dec. 26, not Dec. 21 as was our original plan,” he said. “The snow situation was tolerable in the early season although it still wasn’t very high. We experienced this year four warm fronts accompanied by rain several times through the course of the season, which obviously eroded the snow pack and left us with much less snow than we could operate on in February.” Nason said that the fact that it stayed warm and they weren’t able to save any snow removed any ability for Phoenix Mountain to operate safely in February. The hill was fully open for January but closed down in February after several warm fronts. It is too expensive to make their own snow, Nason added. Phoenix Ski Hill is owned and operated by a public group known as the Phoenix Mountain Alpine Ski Society (PMASS). “Anyone who buys a season’s pass the year previous can apply for membership in PMASS, which is free,” said Nason. “So you take that season’s pass and turn it into a little bit of ownership of the hill and you become a member of Phoenix Mountain Alpine Ski Society and you are entitled to attend the AGM and are kept abreast of other hill developments.” PMASS members can also volunteer to join the board and directors and get involved even more. Nason said that despite the lack of snow, Phoenix Mountain still had some very good attendance. “During operations, our daily visit numbers were actually higher than in previous years,” he said. “There were more people on the hill when we were open than in previous years. So that was fantastic. It was always a busy time at the hill.

Harry Davy – years experience
The Grand Forks and District Public Library recently hosted what is quickly becoming a popular annual event—the Downton Abbey tea party! Costumes were optional, but many got into the spirit of Downton Abbey, and dressed up to sip tea, enjoy some scones at the scone bake-off (inset), create a fabulous button to take home, watch a lady having her hair done and enter the costume parade. The free event was open to all ages. Above (from left), Kai Penner Karen Penner, Clarissa Palek and Ana McGill pose in their finery; and at right, Kristina Nysten leads the costume parade.

1910 Money slot machines are out in Phoenix. The council has voted to ban them and has instructed the police to see that the order is enforced. 1915 L.X. Truxior of Vernon was in town for a few days this week looking over the local field with a view to manufacturing cigars locally. Mr. Truxior has been manufacturing cigars in the Okanagan for about 10 years and is familiar with the requirements of the trade. 1920 Billy Beach, former postmaster general of Christina Lake returned to town this week after spending several months in California. While the southern climes have attractions they do not outshine some that the Boundary has. Mr. Beach also said that Col. Lowery is not married yet, but is liable to commit it at any time. 1925 The Doukhobor school at Spencer was destroyed by fire about 10 o’clock last Friday. This is the eighth school which has been burned in recent months. 1930 An automobile accident occurred between Midway and Greenwood Wednesday when Juan Puddy met Van Gelder driving to Greenwood. Neither saw each other quickly enough and before they could get out of the rut they met head on. Van Gelder was knocked out for a while and Juan Puddy suffered a few cuts. 1935 The Lynch Creek Hotel was destroyed by fire about 8 a.m. Monday with all its contents. The building was owned and occupied by A.W. Johnson who lived alone. 1940 The mill rate for 1939 was 37 mills, made up as follows: 17 mills for schools, 3 1/2 mills for general expenditures and
16 1/2 mills special. 1945 After hearing Mayor Manly explain two complaints that he had received from a prominent citizen, council decided to have the police enforce the 8 p.m. curfew law for youngsters, which has been in the city books for some years. 1950 At the annual meeting of the credit union last week, there were 31 members present and the visitors heard reports of steady growth in the credit union which was incorporated last August and now has assets over $400. 1955 Greenwood – Mrs. L. Madden and her daughter Margaret were treated to a pleasant surprise Monday evening when the operators in the telephone office gave her a surprise party. Mrs. Madden is leaving for Grand Forks where she will be head telephone operator. 1965 The pesticide controversy stirred the entire district with statements being made by Dr. Nick Schmidt, medical officer of health; Ray Orser, secretary of the potato co-op and the Interior Vegetable Marketing Agency. The furor arose over the high concentration of aldrin in the soil in which potatoes have been grown. 1970 The Grand Forks Wolves basketball team: John Popoff, Vernon Lorenz, Mike Talarico, Jim Starchuk, Frank Astofooroff, Mike Strukoff, Jim Chernoff, Gary Brox, Walter Sofonoff and Rick Bates, travel to the provincial finals at Princeton in March. 1975 A statement released by the Kettle Valley School District #13 says: “The Board of Trustees of School District #13 has decided not to proceed at this time

Mandy
My name is Mandy. I am 9 years old in September but everyone thinks of me as a “cute puppy”. I am usually very calm in public and happy to be with my parents or waiting in the car. The biggest tragedy is when I am left at home. I was the runt of my litter and my siblings look nothing like me. We are Shih Tzu/Terrier mixtures and I look like the terrier end of things. I love to talk to my people and will consent to their requests for entertainment on occasion and dance or sing for them. Although usually it just gets them more riled up! I live on a farm outside GF and although I am small I am the boss of the farm dog and will even take over his pillow. I add my bark to his when intruders are invading—if it strikes my fancy—or else I hide in my cave under the desk. Sometimes I will oblige my people and sleep with them or else I choose another spot and roll my eyes at them and their childish pleas. I make friends most everywhere but won’t take their bribes of food often. My people have gotten into trouble at the border over the biscuits that I rejected, being thrown into the glove box of the car! How to enter your pet: It’s free. Borscht a staple no matter how it’s spelled CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
Grand Forks is known for many things, chief among them its sunshine and borscht. In fact, legend has it that was exactly what the sign welcoming visitors to our area said back in the 1990s. Now, of course, it urges you to ‘settle down.’ Borscht is one of the main staples of the Doukhobor diet and is available at pretty much every restaurant in town for eating in or taking out. There are many different ways to cook borscht but the main ingredients remain: vegetables, butter and cream. A few months back, filmmaker Nik Green, formerly of Grand Forks, made several promotional videos for the city. One of the videos that ended up catching the most attention was a short one about the proper spelling of borscht/borshch. While the more popular spelling is borscht, there are other spellings. The USCC (Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ) urges the spelling borshch. A letter in the Gazette from local Russian teacher Rob Stevenson urged people to use the proper USCC spelling of borshch. For a while, there was plenty of discussion in town between different
sides on what the correct spelling should be. Wikipedia lists many different spellings of borscht including borshch, borsch, borstch, borsh and more. Borscht is popular in many Eastern and Central European cuisines including Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. As much as there are different spellings, there are also many different types of borscht. According to a local lore, in the 1990s writer William Rezinskin transliterated many Doukhobor words into English. He said that the way borscht was spelled in English was not close to the actual way it was pronounced in the original language. Rezinskin said that in order for Doukhobors to be true to their heritage, they should spell it borshch. Dawsha Hunt of the tourism centre at gallery 2 said that they get many requests during the year for visitors asking where to get good borscht in Grand Forks. “We prepared a list of the top 10 most frequently asked questions by visitors and where can I get a good bowl of borscht is near the top,” said Hunt. “It’s really one of the main things that people stop in for in Grand Forks. They know our culture; they’re curious about our history. Those that have tried it before keep

School District 51 has received $86,235 to help it purchase a new boiler for Grand Forks Secondary School though the provincial government’s Carbon Neutral Capital Program (CNCP). The Boundary school district is one of 24 B.C. school districts which are sharing $5 million for energy projects like lighting upgrades, boiler replacements, solar panels and electric vehicles under the CNCP. School districts were asked to submit proposals to the Ministry of Education back in November. These proposals were then evaluated on greenhouse gas emission reductions and operational cost savings, along with the level of contributions available for the project from the district and energy service partners. Overall, 25 projects were given the green light and are receiving provincial funds.

As for the spelling, Hunt says there is no argument: “It’s spelled b-or-s-c-h-t. That’s the only way to spell it. It’s just the way I learned how to spell it.” As for Stevenson, who teaches Russian at Grand Forks Secondary, he said he was prompted to write in to the Gazette because he felt the video did not properly respect the Doukhobor heritage. Stevenson was born and raised in Grand Forks with a Doukhobor mother and English father. He continues to be an active member in the USCC. “It wasn’t so much the spelling of borshch but the lack of cultural sensitivity with was apparent in how the video was made,” said Stevenson. “It appeared to me that the producers of the video didn’t collaborate with the members of the Doukhobor community to ask for our feedback on how we feel about the image of Doukhoborism and
the Doukhobor culture was framed in it.” Stevenson admits one of his pet peeves is the spelling of borshch. “It’s not something I’ll go ballistic over,” he said. “We’ve been a big part of the community, a founding part of the community over the last 100 or so years. I thought we were past the part where one group would make assumptions about our culture. They could come and ask us and get our feedback on it. If you want to make a satirical video on borshch there’s a culturally sensitive way to Pots of borshch/borscht simmer on the stove at a recent grad fundraiser. do that.” Emma Tkach photo Stevenson said the borshch spelling is mer and winter. phonetically correct. “Winter borshch is primar“That’s my personal prefer- ily cabbage,” he said. “Whatever ence,” he said. people think of as Doukhobor Spelling aside, Stevenson says borshch, that’s winter borshch. he does love his borshch. Thanks for support The City of Grand Forks will assist the Grand Forks Community Trails Society with the placement of the “Perepelkin Bench” on the Observation Mountain Trail. This is an in-kind donation, as the society already has the money for the bench. But it’s important to have the city on board. It’s their property, after all. The commemorative bench will be in the name of businessman Peter Perepelkin, who, not long before he passed away, donated money towards development of the trail. He believed in it, as do many volunteers in our community who have worked diligently to groom the trail. The bench will provide a peaceful spot at which to pause and reflect, or simply rest, along a trail that provides a beautiful view of the city. The trail benefits local residents, but is also a draw to visitors—visitors look up at the star and wonder how to get there. A commemorative bench will be a beautiful enhancement, a touching legacy; kudos to the city for giving its support.

We all have this polite ritKELLY ual that we go through when greeting others on our day. We ask, “How’s it going?” or maybe, “How are you today?” or perhaps a more formal, “How do you do?” But it’s all pretty much a dance without substance? Most people recognize the question as a rhetorical one and give you a standard, benign answer. “Doing good, thanks! You?” Some people have unique answers that they give every time. Take Wolfgang Schmidt up by Canyonveiw Bridge for instance. If you ever ask him how his day is going he will always reply, “Virtually perfect!” The day you ask him and he doesn’t say those ex-

act words is the day you will know he’s not doing well. But I changed things up a bit last week. For my morning greeting, instead of the usual inquiry I asked people, “What do you know that’s real?” It seemed like a reasonable question. The results were intriguing. Nearly everyone had a comeback at the tip of his or her tongue. It was the answer that they gave that deserves some attention. The majority of responses when I asked, “What do you know that’s real?” were simply, “Nothing.” That is kind of frightening when you consider I hadn’t asked what they knew that was new, I had asked them what they knew that was real. This has prompted me to reprioritized part of my own life. For one thing I have long had the intention of taking a defensive driving refresher course. The number of people
who self-identified as knowing nothing about reality has given me reason to move that course up to the soonest date possible. I did get some other interesting responses though. One person replied, “Absolutely nothing—I live in Midway, you know.” When I asked someone else they said, “Oh I don’t know anything about that.” Making it sound like they had once considered reality as a lifestyle choice but opted for something else. Another told me, “Well if I can’t ad lib then I don’t really want to say anything.” Obviously people are holding their reality cards pretty close to their chests and aren’t too likely to reveal much. Maybe reality is something that isn’t talked about in polite company, like politics or religion? In my opinion though, the best answer that day was, “I

Especially the springtime one; you know, the one where we move the clocks forward an hour. Imagine the pandemonium if we switched our clocks at noon? Lots of people would miss lunch. Others would miss appointments. Conversations would have to be cut short. “Oh my gosh! Just where has the day gone? Diseases rare thanks to vaccines
Editor, The Gazette: I am from the polio generation. I was touched just slightly while my brother-in-law, now deceased, was severely crippled. My first job out of high school was at the Jubilee Hospital in Victoria where there was a polio ward and that was a horrible place. Polio,

Life is about living, Patrick said
Editor, The Gazette: As he looked at the green valleys with water in the distance, Patrick thought of the people around him and wondered how they might benefit from hearing another view of what lies ahead for them. He bent down, and picked up a bright green leaf: not just any plant, a shamrock— three-leaf clover. “That’s it,” he heard himself say. “Do you want to live always, having fun with huge numbers of friends? Happy forever,
loved and being loved? No more problems ever? One answer, then, will be three in one and one in three. “Life is about living: not just about movement, time and space, change and decay. It’s about truth, justice and totality.” Canadians are free to reach out to pure thought if they choose to. It’s not the case all over the world. Happy St. Patrick’s Day. J. O’Sullivan, Grand Forks

NOTICE OF WATER MAIN FLUSHING The Water Utility Department would like to advise residents that the crew will be flushing water mains throughout the City starting March 16 through to the end of April. Regular annual flushing is an important component of the comprehensive water preventative maintenance program adhered to by the City of Grand Forks. Flushing water mains are done to remove sediment that gradually deposits in the pipes which will help maintain the water quality in our system. The City of Grand Forks endeavors to emphasize water conservation and sustainability, therefore, the operations department will re-use the flushing water by capturing it and utilizing it as part of the boulevard maintenance program. Flushing will take place between the hours of 5:00 am and 3:30 pm. As we flush your area, you may experience a temporary reduction in water pressure and/or discoloration of the water. These conditions are normal during flushing activities and are only temporary. Please check your drinking, cooking, and laundry water before using. To clear your water lines, simply turn on your cold water tap or outside hose bib and let it run until the water is clear (approx 15 min. or more). If you have any questions or if you experience any persistent water quality problems as a result of this maintenance program, please let us know at www.grandforks.ca or call City Works at 250 442 4148.

Lilgert takes his case to Supreme Court of Canada CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
Grand Forks resident Karl Lilgert is appealing to the Supreme Court of Canada to review his case. Lilgert was convicted in 2013 by jury of two counts of criminal negligence causing death and sentenced to four years for his role in the 2006 sinking of the Queen of the North ferry. Lilgert is currently in prison serving his sentence. The ferry, which Lilgert was navigating, struck an island during an overnight voyage
from Northern B.C. to Vancouver Island, killing passengers Gerald Foisy and Shirley Rosette. In an interview with the Canadian Press, Lilgert’s lawyer, Glen Orris, said that he plans to argue in the appeal that the trial judge gave incorrect instructions to the jury when explaining the offence of a criminal negligence. Lilgert was tried by jury in 2013 and found guilty. He had been out and living in Grand Forks while appealing to the B.C. Appeal Court. The appeal court turned down Lilgert’s appeal in December of last year and he has been in jail since.
Phoenix ski hill Lots of fun.” Nason said the hill was able to run a full ski program for Hutton Elementary but were unable to do anything for Perley or Christina Lake schools. Unfortunately, Phoenix ended up shutting down two days before the big Family Day free ski event. “That was a huge hit for us,” he said. “We were expecting very high numbers. The day before that, we were supposed to host the Nancy Green Zone Race. (That’s) two very large events in a short period of time. We had lots of supplies brought up and were expecting large than ex-

pected staffing levels.” Nason said the ski hill continues to be healthy and there are no plans on permanently shutting down any time soon, even with the lack of snow this year. Nason said he does expect sales for next year to be down with people’s confidence dropping with the lack of snow. “We’re going to be offering significant discounts next year for season’s passholders from this year,” he said. “In appreciation of their support for this year and in recognition for not having as many ski days this year as they normally would.”

Terrorism Act, creates new powers for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, (CSIS). The agency was created to keep the RCMP policing functions separate from intelligence work after the fiasco of burning the barn in an FLQ operation. This bill gives CSIS the power to do anything (okay, not anything. It especially says CSIS cannot directly kill or harm people or ‘violate the sexual integrity of an individual,’ but otherwise, CSIS will have a vague set of sweeping powers).” The government is defending its actions by citing the shootings that took place at the national war memorial and inside parliament buildings in October 2014 as examples of terrorism, yet no proof has been provided to verity the claim. Will the passage of Bill C-51 ensure that Winston Smith’s Big Brother world of 1984 has finally become a reality?

T
BUSINESS OF THE CITY
he City of Grand Forks is governed by an elected council, a mayor and 6 councillors, who are elected for four year terms. Each member of council represents the city at large. Committee of the Whole meetings are scheduled once per month at 9:00am and Regular meetings are scheduled Monday evenings at 7:00pm. Both meetings are held in Council Chambers at City Hall. During July and August these meetings are scheduled once per month. Agendas and minutes of Council meetings are available on the City’s website www. GrandForks.ca. The COTW and Regular meetings of Council are open to the public, who are encouraged to attend.
Correspondence Members of Council receive correspondence from the public on various issues in the community, and regarding a wide variety of topics. While Council members and the City engage the community in various ways and for a variety of reasons, Corporate Services / Communications also provide a communication link for members of the public to ‘Connect with Council’ through written correspondence on a daily basis. Depending on the nature of the written correspondence, Council is provided with the information in a timely manner, whether it is received in response to a legislated process, or a matter of individual or community interest. If you are unable to attend a Council meeting, we encourage you to submit your thoughts in writing to info@ grandforks.ca. All written and email correspondence addressed to Mayor and Council become public documents once received by the City.
Individual and/or Group Chats with the Mayor The Mayor is committed to maintaining an open door policy, extending an invitation to the public to meet or call his office at City Hall during business hours. Pre-arranging an appointment with the front desk, is recommended in order to avoid any disappointment should the Mayor be away from the office. The Mayor is unable to make decisions on Council’s behalf, and any requests would need to be presented to Council for consideration as per Council Procedure Bylaw No. 1946, 2013.
Strategic Planning Council’s Strategic Planning Session is scheduled to take place on April 15th, 2015. In preparation for the Strategic Planning session, Council would like to invite the public to an open house to discuss a vision for the future of Grand Forks. Please mark your calendars for March 23, 2015 from 3pm-7pm.
The Outdoor Adventure and Travel Show
T
he City of Grand Forks is busy promoting the community for upcoming tourism season. On March 7 & 8, the City and Chamber of Commerce participated in the Outdoor Adventure and Travel Show that was held at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The show was packed with adventurers of all ages and abilities. The City’s booth showcased outdoor recreation activities the area has to offer and promoted the special features of the community and Boundary Country. Staff spoke with over 750 people and handed out over 450 packages containing camping, fishing, biking, hiking, kayaking and other area information. Attendees of the show were also keen to enter a contest for two (separate) free weekends in the community. Each weekend includes one free week at The Pines camp, two golf passes for Christine Lake Golf Club, two meals at local restaurants and two nights at a local B&B. According to staff who attended the

Councillors Councillors on a municipal Council are part of a working team. • Their input is critical to all policy decisions. • Councillors must have effective listening skills and the ability to decide what is best for the Community as a whole. • Councillors bear the responsibility of keeping themselves informed of regional as well as local issues. • Councillors support the Mayor in official capacities. • Councillors must remain committed to addressing policy issues and developing the direction of the Community. • Councillors do not have specific authority given to them under the Community Charter and cannot direct Staff and commit expenditures on behalf of the municipality.

THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF GRAND FORKS
To clear your water lines, simply turn on your cold water tap or outside hose bib and let it run until the water is clear (approx 15 min. or more). If you have any questions or if you experience any persistent water quality problems as a result of this maintenance program, please let us know at www.grandforks.ca or call City Works at 250 442 4148.
event, there were lots of questions about road and mountain biking, camping, fishing and driving loops. Staff intend to review all the information they gathered at the show and provide a report to Council and the public. The City hopes this information will guide the community in determining how to better attract tourists and support them when they visit the community.
T
he City of Grand Forks, would like to thank Wayne Kopan, Manager of Building and Bylaw Services, for his dedication to the organization. The level of service he brings to the position is truly appreciated. Recently, there were opinions expressed publicly by Council that were never intended to offend Mr. Kopan. Council would like to see him continue to deliver professional services for the organization, as he has for the past 30 years. We look forward to moving ahead with business in a professional and considerate manner. MAYOR AND COUNCIL

Work n Play open for business CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
Another business has opened up in Grand Forks, filling in one of the vacant storefronts on Market Avenue. Work n Play is back in town right next door to the old location across from Jogas Espresso Café. Owner Amber Esovoloff opened the store a week ago and says business has been very good so far. The store had a soft opening on March 2 but she says she expects to have a more formal grand opening in April. Esovoloff explains that Work n Play is not a chain of stores but rather a buying group. “What it means is that as a buying group we can get discounts we can pass on to our customers,” she said. Esovoloff started doing embroidery and printing out of her home to be with her young daughter. After her kids grew older, Esovoloff decided it was time to open up a “brick and mortar” store. “I was looking forward to getting out in the community,” she said. “My kids are older now. I enjoy people and I definitely like having a store and interacting with people. It’s a little more visible and I have my home back. The equipment had filled the basement. I’ve brought the embroidery and printing downtown and merged it with Work n Play and now we do both.” The store sells men’s work clothes as well as
casual wear, as well as ladies’ clothes and clothing for youth. “We are trying to carry Canadianmade as much as possible. We have work boots, we’ll have runners coming soon.” Esovoloff said they are trying to keep prices affordable to encourage people to shop local. “We offer really good service,” she said. “We’re trying really hard to bring in products for customers when they have requests so we can meet their needs.” Esovoloff said they are constantly building their inventory and adding new products regularly. “We’re starting a little bit small but we’ve lots of stuff coming. A lot of our brand names will be coming soon,” she said. Work n Play does carry plenty of name brand clothing items already, including Burnside, Tribal, Gilmore, Nygard, Alia and Tanjay, Barbarian rugby shirts, as well as Timberland boots to name a few. The embroidery and printing part of the business can print stickers, wine labels, canvas picture wrap frames, fashion vinyls on shirts, banners, and more. Esovoloff, who was born and raised in Grand Forks, says that feedback from people in the community has been great. “The feedback has been very, very positive,” she said. “Lots of people are happy (to see us here). A lot of people are support us already even though we just opened.”

Trail stewardship focus of meeting PAT KELLY
Boundary Creek Times Reporter
Everyone acknowledged the motorized elephant that sat in the middle of the Midway Community Hall last month when two top officials from Recreation Sites and Trails BC of the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations came to talk about the Trans Canada Trail. They had come to talk about trail stewardship and to offer local residents the chance to help ensure the rail trail corridor in the Boundary is maintained for future generations. Sandy Elzinga, assistant manager of Community Futures Boundary, welcomed Tennessee Trent, trails specialist with Recreation Sites and Trails BC (RSTBC) and John Hawkings, director of RSTBC. Also present was Kevin Eskelin, regional recreation manager, Southern Interior East Region – Cranbrook. Hawkings reviewed the history of the provinces’ ownership of the trails, which includes the Carmi Subdivision of the Kettle Valley Railway that runs from Midway to Naramata, the Columbia and Western (C&W) between Midway and Grand Forks, the KVR Penticton and Osoyoos subdivisions, and the C&W from Grand Forks to Castlegar and the Slocan Subdivision. Hawking said the Forest Practices Act that now regulates the trails didn’t even exist at the time, and it wasn’t until 2010 that RSTBC was given responsibility for these specific trails. Today the former rail corridor is recognized in legislation as trails, but ever since the 1990s when the government bought the land, it was essentially vacant Crown land. “There are some designations on various portions of it,” he said. But there are lots of portions where
it hasn’t been designated as anything, infrastructure and ensuring safety for usand that is the case through most of the ers. Hawking said they view the trails as Boundary. tax-related assistance over the phone, as well as other services. GettinG help If you are on a low income, you might be eligible for a community program to have your income tax return done for you. Call Revenue Canada or your local community services centre to find out if this is the case for you. During income tax time, some organizations and volunteer groups set up free workshops to help people on low incomes complete their own income tax returns. Tax laws are complex and are constantly changing. If you believe that your tax situation is complicated, perhaps because you are a landlord who receives revenue from rental properties or because you own a small business, entrust your bookkeeping and tax return to professional accountants. They have the expertise to deal with every tax situation and can help you maximize your savings.
Dishonesty never pays Governments lose billions of tax dollars every year from the income of individuals and businesses, as well as from unpaid taxes. Tax evasion can take many different forms: Tax shelters, undeclared work, excessive tax planning, omitting to submit an income tax return or to declare revenue earned from investments on the stock exchange, etc. ConsequenCes for tax evaders Tax evasion has major consequences for those who are caught: it can result in a criminal conviction. If they are found guilty, they could receive a heavy fine, go to prison or end up with a criminal record with all the negative repercussions this situation can result in. ConsequenCes for the General publiC This embezzlement of public funds also has consequences for society in general. Governments invest considerable sums of money in attempting to catch poor payers and tax evaders. This money, added to that lost every year due to tax evasion, amounts to a huge loss of revenue for governments. These losses directly affect their level of debt and influence their capacity to provide services and to finance programs in response to the needs of our society; social programs are often the first to be cut. Moreover, law-abiding individuals see their tax burden increased unfairly. Tax evaders, as much as society in general, are affected by tax evasion. So pay what you owe now before having to pay too much at a later date.

Church
Christians gather for day of prayer ANNE MARIEN
Submitted to the Gazette
The World Day of Prayer service was held in Grand Forks Friday in the Seniors’ Centre at City Park, sponsored by the United Church. “Showing genuine interest in others is a positive step forward in maintaining unity among believers and reaching out to the community,” were words written by the women of the Bahamas, who wrote this year’s service, including the World Day of Prayer. They invited us to join them in celebrating of their culture and history, their land and their legacy. The World Day of Prayer is a global ecumenical movement which brings Christians of all traditions together to observe a common day of prayer each
year. In participating in the worship service, we can come to know how our sisters in other countries, languages and cultures understand the biblical passages in context, their concerns and needs and feel ourselves in solidarity with them as we pray with and for them. In this way it is possible to enrich our Christian faith as it grows deeper and broader in an international, ecumenical expression. The motto of World Day of Prayer movement is, “Informed, Prayer and Prayerful Action.” Through our participation in the World Day of Prayer, we affirm that prayer and action are inseparable and that both have immeasurable influence on the world. The World Day of Prayer is coordinated by the Women Inter Church Council of Canada (WICC) fo-
cusing on four main concerns of social justice, women’s issues, ecumenism and growth of women’s spirituality. Through World Day of Prayer grants, WICC supports grassroots work to help women and children both in developing countries and here at home, escape the cycle of poverty and violence. The council also prepares an annual service to mark Dec. 6, Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The women of the Bahamas began with the question, “Jesus said to them, ‘Do you know what I have done for you?’” Christians around the world and in communities across Canada have gathered on World Day of Prayer to pray and act in solidarity with people of the Bahamas.

where he was a long time member. In his retirement years, he loved travelling south in the winter … to Yuma and Mexico, where it didn’t take him long to make new friends with his disarming personality and sense of humour. Ron was a truck driver for the majority of his working life except for the 18 years when he became a business owner … some may remember him as “Ron the Muffler Man”. He was married for 48 years and is survived by his wife Linda Clifton, who was without a doubt the love of his life. He is also survived by his son and only child, Mark Clifton, his sister Roxy (Dave) Agar and his brother Michael Hepburn. He will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews … Nadine Froese, Corey Froese, Lisa Agar, Marnie Birkeland, Lisa Burns and Jay Froese … his great nephews and nieces, his mother-in-law, Doll Hove … as well as his “special grandchildren” Kolby and Quinton McIver. He was an amazing husband, father, brother, uncle … and friend to many. He fought his disease right up to the last day, and although terribly sad, we are relieved that he is at peace after a 22-month battle. A gathering to remember Ron and to celebrate his life will be held at the Omega Banquet Room Saturday, March 14th, 2015 between 2:00pm & 5:00pm. Please stop by anytime during and share a memory. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Boundary Hospital or a charity of your choice. Grand Forks Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
