CITY COUNCIL NEWS “I wore pink to celebrate because I want to support those who have been the target of bullies. Bullies need to know that there are people out there that are willing to take a stand for the victims. By wearing pink, I feel like I am showing those victims they are not alone. Alex Pedersen

WE ASKED YOU:

“I don’t necessarily support anti-bullying day. I think its an umbrella term that has such a loose definition. I feel we should spend time teaching people how to deal with unkind words instead of trying to get others to stop saying them altogether.” Garret Pristie

How did you mark anti-bullying day?

“I celebrated anti-bullying day by working at Mr. Mikes and wearing our pink Bullying Stops Here shirts and reminding people that bullying happens everyday and that everyday is antibullying day.” Jocelyn Lawrence

What are we “entitled” to from our taxes? Alberta Premier Jim Prentice got himself in hot water last week when he suggested that Albertans needed to look in the mirror if they wanted to see who was to blame for the sorry state of the province’s finances. He caused quite a furor. However, Premier Prentice was merely reflecting a trend among politicians to blame an “entitlement” mentality among the electorate for their inability to balance the books. The long-standing debate in the United States about social security and health care reflects this same trend. The Netflix series “House of Cards” captures the essence of this entitlement debate brilliantly, as the series’ main character bases his presidential campaign on the premise that voters are entitled to “nothing” from their taxes. Contrary to the current trend, I believe taxpayers are entitled to quality public programs, services and infrastructure from their taxes. That’s why people pay taxes. It’s supposed to be why governments collect taxes; not for political pet projects, subsidies for major donors or corporations, or over budget public projects that only a few taxpayers can afford to enjoy. However, like all things in life, there is a balance between what citizens should rightly feel entitled to receive from their taxes and what governments can reasonably deliver based on those same citizens’ willingness to pay. Quesnel City Council is trying to find this balance as we finalize our 2015 budget and begin to work on future budgets. Last week Council was given kudos by the consulting team working on the City’s 20-year capital plan. The consultants stated that the steps Council is taking to address the City’s long-standing infrastructure deficit should receive provincial recognition as a best practice and a model for other communities to follow. But, taking steps to protect our infrastructure and continue to deliver quality public programs and services means that certain services some people feel they are entitled to can no longer be sustained. So far, the only such service to be cut is spring clean up and we recognize that some taxpayers are not happy about this decision. As our community goes through this transition period Council will have to continue to discriminate between entitlement programs and the essential services and infrastructure that will maintain the vibrancy and resiliency of our community. We’ll need your insights and your patience as we govern with the future in mind. For more information about these opportunities to engage with Council please visit the City website at www.quesnel.ca. Ted Martindale has fond memories of his days as a newspaper delivery boy in the 1950s. He delivered both the Vancouver Sun and the Cariboo Observer to about 45 houses on a downtown route encompassing Reid and McLean Street. One of those subscribers still has the Observer delivered to her home on Reid Street. Bernadette Watteyne recently turned 90 and Martindale decided, for old times’ sake, to once again deliver her paper. Among the many people he delivered to between 1957 – 1959, certain ones stand out. “I remember a fellow who fought in the Boer War, and then there was Jim Williams who built the model of the BX sternwheeler that’s now at the museum,” Martindale said. “And of course there were the various families whose roots go back a long time like the Nadeaus.” For delivery of

the Vancouver Sun, Martindale said the paper always arrived a day late and cost the subscriber $1.25 a month. The papers were delivered by truck to the Lowden’s garage on Vaughan Street and were organized and distributed from there. “The best delivery Day for the Sun was Christmas Day, everybody tipped well and some even invited us in for Christmas dinner.” With the Observer the delivery boys had to go to the office on Reid Street, across from present day

Integris Credit Union and put their name on a list to get first off the press papers. “The press often broke down so the higher you were on the list the better your chances of getting your papers earlier and have delivery done earlier. Those farther down the list would often get their papers as late at 5:30 p.m. It was great to get the Observer warm off the presses.” Martindale remembers that the delivery boys were for the most part very

responsible. He doesn’t remember his parents being involved in his route at all. “We always delivered our papers on time and if we couldn’t do our route for any reason, we had to find someone who would. Getting the paper to the subscribers was everything. If you had a paper left over when you were done, you worried who you’d missed.” Another popular job for young boys was setting pins at the bowling alley which paid $3.50 for a

night of pin-setting. He also said to the best of his knowledge, all the papers were distributed by subscription. “I don’t remember any Observers for sale in any of the stores. I’m pretty sure they were all delivered through subscription.” And for many local boys, their paper route was the means to purchase items they needed and wanted. “It was my paper route money which I saved for a bicycle trip with Bud Miller to Penticton, when we were 15. “We worked our way down, I remember one job was picking apricots.” That was the end of his delivering papers as Martindale moved on to mill jobs after that. Known for his wildly popular Granville’s Coffee, Martindale stepped away from his busy restaurant and once again delivered papers to Bernadette on her birthday. She remembered him as a very reliable carrier back in the 1950s. And she still receives her Cariboo Observer from a carrier.

Planning for success requires succession planning.

B.C. NEWS

B.C. moves to restrict e-cigarettes TOM FLETCHER Black Press

The B.C. government is tightening its regulations to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors and use of the smoking substitute in workplaces, restaurants and other indoor public spaces. Health Minister Terry Lake said changes he introduced in the B.C. legislature Thursday will treat the battery-powered devices like tobacco products, meaning they may not be displayed in stores or used in enclosed spaces where others are present. That will include private vehicles with children inside. Lake said he expects the new regulations to be in effect within a year, after consulting with the industry and giving sellers time to adjust to the new rules.

“This doesn’t ban e-cigarettes,” Lake said. “This means that children are protected from the sale and from being exposed to e-cigarettes, and those who don’t want to be subjected to the vapours from e-cigarettes are protected as well. “Essentially the same conditions that now apply to tobacco will apply to e-cigarettes, so in public places, indoor workplaces, school grounds and now health authorities as well.” Lake said e-cigarettes may have potential as a quitsmoking aid, but they are currently unregulated and the liquid used in them may contain nicotine or other chemicals with health risks. The federal government has banned the sale of so-called “e-juice” containing nicotine, but it remains legal in the U.S. and Health

Canada has received numerous reports that it is sold north of the border as well. NDP health critic Judy Darcy said she supports the restriction on e-cigarettes, but the lack of measures to prohibit flavoured tobacco products is “a gaping hole” in the government’s bill. Lake said he has been assured by federal Health Minister Rona Ambrose that federal regulations are in the works to deal with flavoured tobacco. “When you’re talking about the manufacture of cigars and cigarettes, it’s better to do that at a federal level, because obviously they’re not made in each individual province,” Lake said. E-cigarettes can be disposable like this one costing about $10, or more expensive refillable and rechargeable units.

CAPSULE COMMENTS with Lee-Anne Williams B.Sc. (Pharm)

Many people were told they had a penicillin allergy when they were young. However, in 2012, the Mayo Clinic did a study of 384 patients about to have surgery. They were given a skin test which is a safe way of determining an allergy. Of the 384 patients, 94% tested negatively for a penicillin allergy. These results gave physicians a greater range (and often less expensive) of antibiotics if they were needed postsurgery. This allergy may be something to have checked. The sphygmomanometer (from the Greek, sphugmos meaning “pulse”) is one of the most common instruments used in medicine today. The first blood pressure monitor was invented in 1881. It was a very clumsy affair and not too accurate. It was in 1905 that the difference been systolic and diastolic pressures were discovered that blood pressure results were more reliable. Recent discussions in the media about rock star, Bono wearing tinted glasses put the spotlight on glaucoma, an eye problem that can lead to blindness. Early detection is important and although the disease can’t be cured, it can be controlled by the regular use of eye drops. Have you had your eyes checked recently? Dental plaque is a film that develops naturally on our teeth but it doesn’t disappear naturally. We have to take it off by brushing at least twice daily and flossing at least once. Regular flossing is important because plaque starts to harden within 48 hours and is difficult to get off. Make flossing part of your daily routine. For a whole range of dental hygiene products, drop into our pharmacy.

OPINIONS

Sobering statistics One in 10 British Columbians has kidney disease. That’s a staggering number. Take a look around you, at your place of work; in your classroom. Chances are, someone you know may have kidney disease. There’s also a good chance they don’t know it yet, because the symptoms are so slight in the early stages. Therein lies one of the biggest hurdles of dealing with the disease. The key to preventing or delaying a life on dialysis, or a kidney transplant, is early detection. Testing is a simple procedure (a blood test and a urine test) that can be done along with your regularly scheduled check-up. Even if the aforementioned quiz produced all “no” answers, a medical test is always a good preventative measure. The alternative is unpleasant. Currently, more than 350 British Columbians are on a wait list for kidney transplant. The median wait time for a kidney is 4.8 years. More than 50 per cent of dialysis patients do not survive past four years. Sobering statistics, indeed. The Kidney Foundation of Canada, B.C. and Yukon is on a mission to increase the number of kidney transplants by 50 per cent over the next five years. In order to achieve that goal, there is a need for more donors. The unique advantage people in need of a kidney have over others awaiting organ transplants is that people only need one kidney to survive; living donation is an option. Also, a living kidney transplant is the most successful of all transplant procedures. These are only advantages to those with kidney disease if those with two healthy kidneys sign up for the living donation program. For more information on the living donation program, go to kidney.ca/ living-donation March is National Kidney Month. Make a difference. You could be saving the life of someone sitting next to you. –BP

Seniors’ advocate strikes a chord B

.C.’s new seniors’ advocate has issued her second report, and the media mostly ignored it. When this new office was promised by a campaigning Premier Christy Clark two years ago, I suggested that B.C. already has 85 seniors’ advocates. They’re called MLAs, and inquiries go to their local offices. Much to the chagrin of the opposition, Seniors’ Advocate Isobel Mackenzie’s mandate is not to pursue individual cases, and so she won’t be serving up a fresh assortment of horror stories to embarrass the government. Instead, it is to look for “systemic challenges” and recommend ways to deal with them. The latest report is based on a survey of more than 500 seniors from around the province, and the key finding was not what she expected. “We were surprised to learn of the lack of awareness among seniors, particularly low-income seniors, of government programs and the subsidies available to assist them,” Mackenzie said. The survey found that 60 per cent of seniors living on $30,000 or less annual

Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views income didn’t know they are eligible for discounts on Medical Services Plan premiums. For income less than $22,000, the entire $864 cost of individual MSP premiums is waived. Other frequently overlooked programs are a monthly rent subsidy called Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER), grants for disability modifications called Home Adaptations for Independence, drug cost assistance called Fair Pharmacare, property tax deferment and the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement program. Those older than 75 with income of less than $30,000 reported the lowest awareness of assistance designed specifically for them. But you don’t get these benefits unless you apply and show that your income qualifies.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender is still bragging about the response rate for $40-a-day parental strike pay, which was snapped up by almost 100 per cent of eligible parents. This demonstrates that the government can indeed give away money with great efficiency, just by telling people how to get it. The NDP’s version of seniors’ advocacy is to find the most tragic problems from complaints coming into constituency offices, and use those to ambush the government. A popular choice is an elderly couple who have to be separated because their medical needs are too different to keep them in the same facility. TV news loves that one. People cry on camera and denounce politicians for being heartless, as if the health minister stayed up late plotting how to break their granny’s heart. Maybe this seniors’ advocate wasn’t such a bad idea after all. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Twitter: @tomfletcherbc e-mail: tfletcher@ blackpress.ca

The survey also found that the biggest fear of low-income seniors is that they won’t be able to afford to stay in their homes. See home adaptation, property tax and rent subsidy programs above. Awareness and usage of the SAFER program was lowest in the north and highest in urban areas, perhaps not surprising since the B.C. government exists more in theory than in fact in many remote places. So what should the government do about this? Well, it could advertise these programs The government does lots of advertising, but not about old news like the SAFER program, which dates back to the 1970s. Clark’s government did a whack of advertising in the election year, 2013. Much of it was about the B.C. Jobs Plan, heavy on the hardhats and blueprint-style graphics and arc welding and stuff like that. Then last year the government’s big ad campaign was around the teachers’ strike, and the payments to parents to help with child care while teachers demanded twice as big a raise as all the other unions.

Only because we have grandchildren who will paying for the privileges and lifestyle that the B.C. Liberals and Conservatives think we deserve (for votes), with borrowed government money. It’s called debt, and the B.C. Liberals have doubled it in the last decade or so. Bring back Premier Ralph Klein from Alberta, in 20 years. A simple, but private matter Editor: I am writing in response to a recent article in the Cariboo Observer on the subject of breast feeding in public. Like using the bathroom, I feel, breast feeding was NEVER intended to be done in public. Every so often some small group, or a

single person, takes it upon itself to make a big issue of what is a simple, but very private thing. I realize that just perhaps some parent has absolutely no choice due to some sort of long travel situation, but really if you can’t feed your little one in private generally, it is obvious you are not even

trying. You can’t tell me that a mother in Quesnel, can’t find the time to feed her infant at home before going shopping for instance! I am surprised that Northern Health are actually encouraging this – I know it is all health peoples opinion that mothers should breast feed, but it is a choice

and it definitely should not be in public. Like I said, you don’t go to the bathroom in public, nor do you change an infant’s diaper in public. Please mothers, stop trying to make, what I feel is a stupid point. J. Heatherington Quesnel

The founding program Big Sisters Big Brothers encourages adults with a little time, patience and energy to enrol where an extensive background check ensures trustworthy people are matched with young people with similar interests. This is often the beginning of a wonderful friendship that can last well past the original pairing. For Janice McKinney what started as uncertain experience has resulted in a life-long connection with her Little Sister Geneva, long after the official match expired due to the terms of the organization. Geneva recently turned 32 and still remains in contact with her Big Sister Janice. For one Little Brother, the relationship with his Big Brother meant a great deal and he credits the relationship and his Big Brother with his development of good habits. “I was matched with Dale Killian after two years in the program. He was more than just a mentor, he taught me a lot about saving money, having fun, safety, friendship and trust. He also taught me about work ethics and he is part of the reason I’m planning to become a heavy duty mechanic. Dale made such an impact on my life.” – Steven Anderson Teen In-school mentoring is an easy and rewarding program that matches high school students with a child in a school environment. Together they share activities and develop a special bond that builds memories and character in both the mentor and the child. For mentor Cassidy Cole, who accepted three children to mentor, it was challenging but infinitely rewarding. “A boy that I was matched with was autistic and didn’t speak to anyone. After about three weeks of working with him I got him to finish a sentence for me. I cannot describe the absolute awe I felt when I heard his words. What I didn’t know or expect to get from this is that it really brought out the true me and showed me this is what I want to do with my life. Big Brothers and Sisters has taught me the value of family and friendship.” – Cassidy Cole. “I feel being a mentor has allowed me to be part of something larger. I honestly feel that every part of my experience with being a mentor has been valuable.” – Matt

Two of BBBSQ newest programs tackle the challenging years as children become teenagers. Go Girls is a free awareness group designed for girls aged 11 – 13. Also a mentor approach, the program provides girls with the information and support they need to make informed choices about healthy, active living during a particularly challenging stage of development. The program is delivered in the elementary school system at various schools during the school year for a period of about ten weeks. Key issues include body image, self-esteem, healthy eating, physical activity, relationships and decision-making. “Go Girls is awesome!” – Gurleen, Go Girls participant Game On is also a free awareness group for boys in Grades 5 – 7 and is also delivered through the elementary school for a period of 10 weeks during lunch hour. The current program is running through Red Bluff Lhtako elementary school and is designed to help equip boys with skills to make positive and healthy choices for themselves. Both programs provide healthy snacks, sometimes with fresh produce unfamiliar to the participants and this often encourages a life-long curiosity about food. Neither program offers transportation to or from the activity. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Quesnel is devoted to the well-being of every participant in every program and is grateful to the community support they rely on. As much as possible the organization assists with the costs associated with BBBS activities to ensure finances are not a burden to potential Big Brothers Big Sisters. The Secret Placer believes Quesnel is on a journey of positive change ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

A

fter viewing the all-pervasive negativity on the Facebook group WTFQuesnel, coupled with a career that has it’s fair share of negativity, the Secret Placer (SP) had had enough and became determined to turn that around. “Negativity is like another medication or drug, it takes its toll on the person and breeds more negativity,” SP commented. Looking for the most positive action, the SP devised a plan which launched on the very Facebook page that had disturbed SP so much, WTFQuesnel. It was a simple plan, one that he/she alone could carry out and the objective was to bring a smile to a few faces, encourage fun family outings and be a force for positivity. “On a very bad day in my life, I made the decision to throw water on the fire of negativity on that Facebook page,” SP said with a grin. Anonymity was important. SP definitely didn’t want people to know the identity of the SP but more importantly sees this as a positive movement for all people and wants it to continue long after the current SP is gone. After purchasing a few gift cards, SP had a trusted friend post photos of hidden treasure (the gift cards) on the WTFQuesenel Facebook page, in the middle of all the negativity. “It was amazing. People that very day instantly changed to positive and we had someone instantly want to donate,” SP said. And people found the treasures posted (recognizing the location was half the battle) on WTFQuesnel. “That first treasure hunt was pretty random,” SP said. “And people who found the treasures posted photos to WTFQuesnel.” It was working! People were enthusiastic and more and more people were looking for the treasures with the second treasure hunt and by the third treasure hunt, 150 people were looking for treasure. “I had to rethink the whole thing because now it was becoming a safety issue, I had to make the hiding spots were in safe areas to park and where children were safe. I also realized I needed to make it a lot harder to find the treasure.” It was then it dawned on SP the need to make a specific Facebook page dedicated to the treasure hunt. “I enlisted seven trusted people to help develop the new page. Quesnel Family Group Facebook page is administered by the seven core people.” SP said the entire point of the treasure hunt is to inject positivity into people’s lives. “It’s not about the treasure, its about the hunt and families and friends working together along the way.” “I want people to get to know their neighbourhoods and the people who live there. People don’t need strict rules and they don’t necessarily need someone to come in and solve their problems. We just need a positive attitude and to share that positivity.” SP realizes the need to think outside the box and come up with fresh, new ideas to

keep the wow factor in the Treasure Hunts. The request went out on the Quesnel Family Group page asking children to draw pictures how they envisioned the Secret Placer and many drew pictures of a superhero complete with cape and posted it to the Quesnel Family Group. One day when SP was unexpectedly called into work and unable to place the treasure, the word went out SP has zoomed off into space to prevent a mega meteorite from crashing to earth. Next day pictures were posted of children drawing SP saving the world. It’s SP’s fondest wish that children will draw pictures of themselves as superheroes and gain a positive attitude which they can bring to their own world. “The message is everyone has the power of positivity and can freely share that with those around them.” Special treasure hunts are woven in amongst the traditional hunts. Currently there’s an online trivia challenge about Quesnel which includes questions for adults about businesses, history, community facts, even information about city policies and bylaws. “It’s like opening a treasure box of information.” For SP its all about people slowing down and using their minds and all their senses. Since launching Quesnel Family Group, more than 750 people have joined and instead of SP footing the bill for the treasures, donors have stepped forward in droves, even children wanted to donate. “The parents of these children were overwhelmed by their positive act of kindness.” All donors are considered secret givers but everyone is anonymous. “This isn’t about who gave what or who’s doing what, its all about sharing a positive experience and attitude.” As the treasure hunt grows, the core members are learning how best to administer to such a large group. “The time and date of treasure hunts will always be random, special quests will randomly pop up as well as special treasures. We never want to lose the wow factor.” After their fourth treasure hunt someone in Vanderhoof contacted the Facebook page wanting to know how it all worked. Now that community has secret placers and a group page. Quesnel Family Group successfully launched treasure hunt number five and six without any issues whatsoever. Regardless of how this evolves, SP knows it was never about getting to the finish line or the treasure first it was always about the family and friends you take along the way and positive fun you experience together. “Treasures are more than tangible gifts – its knowledge, wisdom and skills as well.” SP sees the children as the key to a more positive world and encourages them to draw pictures of themselves and their world as a positive place with them spreading that message to others. Children of today are the positive influence of not just today but all the tomorrows.” “The journey of positive change has begun and you too can join the movement. Come see for yourself.”

It’s the hunt Not the treasure

Wells Sunset Theatre presents Cougar Annie Tales Sunset Theatre’s season is heating up and we haven’t even officially moved into spring. The little theatre in Wells has a few spectacular productions coming up beginning with Cougar Annie Tales March 18. Katrina Kadoski, who wrote the play and performs the production, spent close to three years at Cougar Annie’s garden as well as immersing herself in the folklore surrounding the legendary pioneer-settler. California-born Ada Annie Jordan settled in the Clayoquot coastal rainforest

in 1915 with her first husband and three young children. This year marks the centennial of her arrival in the place she initially thought would become like any other west coast settlement. A five-acre garden that she carved out of the wilderness provided food and income throughout her long life. But perhaps the most memorable and certainly where she earned her nickname was income earned from the bounty on the more than 70

cougars she shot. Annie gave birth to eight more children in this remote location and in fact rarely left the property until old age and blindness forced her move to Port Alberni, where she died just shy of her 97th birthday. In creating this theatrical tribute to Cougar Annie, Kadoski referenced more than a dozen B.C. history books, including Margaret Horsfield’s Cougar Annie’s Garden and Voices of the Sound. She also interviewed members of Ada Annie’s family,

foresters, fishermen, band members of the Hesquiaht Nation, archaeologist and adventurers who made it to this remote location. Directed by Kate Rubin, Cougar Annie Tales uses dramatic narrative, images, letters and original compositions to celebrate the unconventional life of one of B.C.’s most colourful local characters. The tour is made possible with support from Intrepid Theatre. Cougar Annie Tales tickets are available from the Sunset Theatre box office for $15 general admission.

HAROLD HARTLEY

Aug. 16, 1926 - Feb. 23, 2015 The family of Harold Hartley is deeply saddened to announce his passing on February 23, 2015. Harold Hartley was born on August 16, 1926 in Maple Creek Saskatchewan. Harold spent his early years as a prairie cowboy, breaking horses with his family. At age 17, Harold enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. He would share stories with his family about his journey around the world, protecting the flat top ships in the navy and working as a quartermaster where had the opportunity to meet Queen Elizabeth, Winston Churchill and Eisenhower. He traveled to places such as Egypt, the Philippines, Mediterranean, Malta, Scotland, Australia and South Carolina to name a few (these are the locations that Grandpa shared stories about but we are sure there were many more locations perhaps with stories not suitable for grandchildren). Harold met his wife Kitty while in the navy. They both shared the same birthday. When he first met Kitty she played a practical joke on him; pretending to be an officer, she had Harold moving furniture for her. They met later that night at a dance, and their courtship began. They lit up one another’s lives for 58 years, marrying on January 26, 1946. Kitty passed away June 16, 2004.

Sundry, Greenwood, Victoria, Quesnel, Goldbridge and Leo Creek. From 1965 on Quesnel became the Hartley’s home base. Harold, with the help of Kitty raised his younger siblings Darrel, Larry and Sheela. Together they would travel to rodeos across the country and Harold would always tell the most animated and colourful stories of their many adventures. Harold was very proud of his “girls” Darlene (Ron) Rhode, Nancy (Jim) Oakes, Linda Hartley and Bridget (Miron) Croy and his grandchildren Joanne Lane ( Kevin ) , Carmen Lane (Michael), Toby Oakes, Coralee Oakes, Terri-Lyne Brennan ( John), Wanda Lund (Dave) and CarriAnne (Don) Kehler. Harold was also proud of his great-grandchildren Vanessa, Rexanna, Kylie, Sara-Jo, Darian, Delany, Nicholas, Samantha, Josh, Shaylynn, Taylor, Mathew, Jordan, Dallas, Tayea, Reece and he was even able to welcome 3 great great grandchildren, Nathan, McKenzie & Lelynd.

Together their journey took them to many destinations including Maple Creek, Calgary, Delbourne,

Harold was a passionate volunteer and worked hard to build the Quesnel rodeo

club, serving as its first president and an active member his entire life. He was looking forward to the Quesnel rodeo celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Harold was known throughout the rodeo circuit for his ability to ride his 8 seconds calmly with a cigarette in his mouth and his cowboy hat always firmly in place. Harold also loved politics. He believed in the responsibility we all have to get involved and to make a difference. He was active in the reform party and was a strong Socred working with Alex Fraser. He was proud of his ruby volunteer pin. He later turned his attention to supporting the BC Liberals and helped on the campaign of his granddaughter. He would quote, “you have to make your own luck.” Harold was met at the end of his journey by his loving wife Kitty, his grandson Lance, his brothers Larry and Darrel and his parents Hazel and Buck. The family would like to thank Dr. Derkson and everyone at Dunrovin for their care and friendship. A celebration of life will be held at the rodeo grounds at a later date.

She was predeceased by her husband Reg, parents Jessica and Frank, sister Berrie and brother Roddie. Barb will also be joining younger family members in Heaven including five nephews and granddaughter Jessica’s husband, Jack. She also lived in Australia, but spent over half of her life in British Columbia in the communities of Williams Lake, Quesnel and Terrace. As a young lady, Barb was a beauty queen and also spent time on the stage and had minor roles in several movies. Her warm personality enabled her to happily welcome newcomers to Quesnel for the Welcome Wagon. Barb had many friends and was a true animal lover. She loved her cats and dogs, but also fed ducks and crows. Barb volunteered at the SPCA and Crisis Line in Quesnel and was active with the Happy Gang in Terrace. She loved watching her children and grandchildren in sports and spent many hours at the arena and soccer field. A funeral service was held on February 28, 2015 at the St. Matthew’s Anglican Church.
