Former Cranbrook mayor Wayne Stetski has announced his intention to run for member of Parliament under the New Democratic Party banner in the Kootenay-Columbia federal riding this fall. “Stephen Harper has inflicted serious damage on our country, making it more and more difficult to recognize the Canada we know and love,” he said. Stetski, who was defeated after one term as mayor in November, will be confirmed as the NDP candidate at a nominating convention in Cranbrook on Sunday. “Whether it is our reputation on the international stage or our record on protecting the lakes and rivers we love, Stephen Harper’s record is embarrassing for Canadians,”

A lengthy chase and search by Creston RCMP was undertaken on March 5 when police were notified a female driver had failed to stop at the Kingsgate border crossing. The suspect did not pull over for a vehicle check as directed, border officials told police. Instead, she fled the scene. When the car was located by police in Lister, she failed to stop when the squad car’s sirens were employed. Police abandoned the chase out of

he said. “I’m not just running against Stephen Harper’s record, I’m running because I believe that the people of this area deserve to be represented by someone who is willing to stand up and fight for their interests.” A longtime public servant, Stetski spent 22 years as a manager with BC Parks in Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and the Kootenays before assuming the Kootenay regional manager’s role with the BC Ministry of Environment. In that position he was responsible for fish and wildlife, BC Parks and ecosystems. He also served as co-chair of the Columbia Basin Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program and was the provincial authority member of the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. SEE STETSKI, PAGE 17

safety concerns and she was soon after located not once, but twice, each time evading police at high speeds. Each time the chases were abandoned out of concern for possible pedestrians, animals and vehicles on or near the road. The driver then was reported to have been arrested at the U.S. side of the Rykerts border crossing. She was taken into custody on suspicion of driving with a suspended license and driving while impaired by drugs. A warrant is being sought for her arrest in Canada.

The Kootenay Lake school board will send a conciliatory letter to the British Columbia School Trustees Association after being one of two districts not to renew their membership last summer. Recently representatives from the provincial association travelled to the Kootenays to attempt to address the local board’s concerns. Chair Lenora Trenaman said the meeting was a productive step in the right direction. “We had a very interesting conversation. They want us back,” she said. “We heard explanations for processes they were involved in at the provincial level, and they tried to tell us why they took the stances and made some of the decisions they did.” However, they haven’t quite been wooed back yet. “We’re going to ask follow-up questions about the dialogue we had at the meeting two weeks ago. From that conversation we determined what questions we need to follow up on,” Trenaman said. One issue is the potential $40,000 cost that would come if they were forced to pay their 2014/15 fees to rejoin the association. Trenaman said that would be a significant financial hurdle to the reconciliation process. Association president Teresa Rezansoff, who chairs the Boundary school district, told the Star she wasn’t certain whether the board will be required to pay the fees. “I just received that clarifying question from the board last night, and we’re looking

into what the options and ramifications are for rejoining.” She said the association values the district, particularly because of its reputation for adding diversity to the educational conversation. “It’s back and forths like this that provide for a rich discussion. We also recognize every board in the province has autonomy and a right to their own views, and we respect that. We think it’s important.” Rezansoff said though the Kootenay Lake district has expressed concerns about the provincial association not fulfilling its advocacy role, they are committed to changing that perception. “We are 111 years old this year. We’ll never change that we advocate for what our members want.” She said the association’s influence is greater if they cultivate a respectful relationship with the government. In travelling to meet with the board, she believes the two groups have come together in a meaningful way. “For both of us, we gained a better understanding of what’s happened over the past few years.” Meanwhile, newly elected trustee Curtis Bendig put forward a notice of motion for the next board meeting. He told the Star that he plans to urge the board to find a way to rejoin the provincial body. “I’m not speaking for the board, I’m speaking for myself in terms of where I stand on this issue. I think it’s very important that our board and the people we represent have a strong voice at the provincial level, and the association is a good way to have that voice.” Bendig said his intent is to “drive a conversation about our next steps regarding having our voice heard at the provincial level.” Both Trenaman and Bendig noted the previous board had legitimate concerns about the association’s leadership, but they were both optimistic that could change. Bendig said executive members including Rezansoff were accommodating and forthcoming. “There have been healthy conversations and some understanding gained. The members of their executive did come to our district to meet personally with our board. I feel like that was a significant outreach.” Trenaman said she’s heard concerns that other school districts may leave the association, which wasn’t their intention. “It was never our intent to see a domino effect of other school districts dropping off. But we know there are Front page banner other boards conphoto by Brian cerned about their Lawrence membership.”

Book offers glimpses of God in everyday life BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

After decades of writing, Patricia Bartlett has taken the next big step — compiling some of her favourite pieces into a book she will launch next week at Black Bear Books. Glimpses of Glory contains reflections on life and faith — Bartlett is a member of Cranbrook’s Saint Aidan Orthodox Church — and a couple of fiction stories, including the Second World War’s Dunkirk evacuation, which brings tears to her eyes. “It still does every time I talk about it,” she said. “If they hadn’t been rescued, the war would have gone in a completely different direction. The people took their destiny into their own hands because the war machine couldn’t get them off.” But Bartlett’s spiritual side gives the book its focus, with segments often including scriptures and taking a closer look at God’s presence. After all, she said, God is around us and in us. “People go chase God all over the countryside,” she said. “We need to be experiencing God in our day-to-day lives — that’s why we have day-to-day lives.” Bartlett was a freelance journalist and columnist for many years, so making her writing public isn’t something new, although her faith as an Orthodox Church member plays a large part in this publication. “As you progress, you have to learn to stop lying to yourself,” Bartlett said. “You have to be out in the open. ... By putting it out there, you’re being honest with everybody else.” The author has lived in Creston for 20 years after she and her husband, Paul, brought their five children to Creston when he got a job as the youth pastor at the Erickson’s Evangelical Covenant Church. It’s the most recent stop on a long journey: Raised in England until she was three years old, Bartlett spent the next six years in Richmond, then Montreal and southern Ontario, joined the Armed Forces, and lived in northern Ontario for 12 years. That was where her writing career took off, with a couple of columns appearing in local newspapers; one covered spirituality and another featured her musings on life, “à la Erma Bombeck,” she said.

“I’m at home in the winter with five children, in minus 35 or 40,” she said. “You can get mad or you can stand back and laugh.” The dozen years in northern Ontario led directly into the move to Creston, and after a few years, the family joined the Orthodox in Post Falls, Idaho, in 2000. It wasn’t simply a change of belief — for Bartlett, it was the culmination of years of searching. Bartlett was baptized Anglican as an infant, and began to question her beliefs at age 12 when she discovered science — which ultimately helped her to realize God exists. But the belief in God wasn’t enough, and she tried Wicca, WordFaith and the Pentecostal, Baptist and Evangelical churches. With many, she found that individual members had expectations above and beyond those of the church itself. “When people make up their own belief about who Jesus was, that’s how you end up with the 20,000 Protestant denominations we have today,” she said. The Orthodox Church, though, lived up to its name (meaning “right belief”) and finally offered the freedom and unity she was seeking. “It answered a lot of questions that Protestant churches weren’t able to,” she said. “All of these different groups had a part of the truth, but would emphasize ‘this’ to the detriment of another part. Even though some truths are hard to follow, they’re still part of the truth.” As someone who searched for, and found, God in many places — the unexpected: reading the works of J.R.R. Tolkien or weeding the garden; the expected: the laughter and love of family, according to her book’s introduction — Bartlett hopes her book will encourage others to do the same. “I pray this small collection may serve as a guidepost for others,” she says in the book’s introduction. “Sometimes, all we need is a slight change of view to turn frustration into wonder.” Bartlett will launch Glimpses of Glory from 6-8 p.m. March 19 at Black Bear Books in Creston, and 2-4 p.m. March 21 at Lotus Books in Cranbrook.

I must be missing something. Admittedly, I must be missing a lot when it comes to coffee. The appeal of coffee outlet chains that sell brewed coffee, for instance. Or of the coffee that sits in the drip maker all day. Or pretty much any restaurant coffee, come to think of it. Okay, so I am fussy. But I truly do not get the appeal of the latest fad, and great producer of nonrecyclable waste — Keurig and similar brands. Exactly how rushed is your day when you think that paying a premium for second-rate coffee in order to save a few seconds is considered good value? With my trusty little AeroPress I can make a much better cup in about the same time, at a much lower cost. The AeroPress, for the uninitiated, is a sturdy plastic gizmo in which a chamber (a.k.a. tube) is inverted and pressed lightly onto a plunger. Coffee grounds are measured in, boiling water is poured over and given a quick stir. A minute or less later you screw on a filter cap (I have long since abandoned paper filters in favour of a stainless steel one), invert the contraption onto a cup, and then gently press the coffee into the cup. Each AeroPress owner I know has his or her own measurement and time preferences. But they all agree that the result is a smooth coffee without the acidic tastes of a drip version. With those easily controlled variables the real key is in the coffee used. We buy only whole beans and typically grind enough to last us the day (I rarely have more than one a day, so it isn’t a lot) because oxygen doesn’t

do ground coffee any favours. We buy good dark or medium roast beans and our grinder is of good quality. Use a cheap little blade grinder and you won’t get anywhere near the flavour that a burr

Lorne Eckersley grinder produces. Mine cost about $300 but I have had it for more than 10 years and it isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. We keep the setting on a fine grind because Angela uses it to make the espressos for her daily two or three lattes. There is another benefit to the AeroPress system. With the use of a stainless steel filter (which, like the plastic parts, requires only a quick rinse under hot water to clean it — no soap, please. Same goes for the espresso machine parts) the only waste is the spent grounds and they can easily be dumped into the compost bucket that sits on our counter. By contrast, the ridiculous Keurig thingies are non-recyclable (the company promises a switch to recyclable materials by 2020) so they add to the landfill burden. And, at about 65 cents and up, they can’t really be described as cheap. I understand the convenience factor in snapping a K-Cup into a machine and hitting a but-

ton, but that convenience is gone when you opt for a refillable gizmo so I am guessing they aren’t all that popular. Imagine my surprise to learn that these coffee makers can also be used to make tea. Seriously? Tea needs to be steeped, not with water pushed through a little plastic cup. Same cost, too, it seems. About four or five times the cost of the double bergamot teabags that I buy when they go on sale. We humans are a weird species though, and we don’t often think of the environment when we make consumer choices. And we don’t get much leadership from our governments, either. Haven’t you been getting a kick about learning that global companies like Nestlé are pumping British Columbia’s water into plastic (recyclable, at least) bottles to sell to gullible consumers? Not so much the fact that they are doing so, but that they haven’t been paying anything for the resource. And now the provincial government announces it is going to finally start charging. How much, you might ask. How about $2.25 per million litres? Of course, there will be a plan for a bulk purchase discount (I’m being sarcastic here) but that hasn’t been announced. Decisions about consumer choices don’t require a whole lot of thought. Would your day suffer if you didn’t have a Keurig-like machine to save you a few seconds? Probably not. Could you survive without plastic bottles of water? Probably. At least those are my guesses. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

Nothing wrong with comfort zone

Everybody has their niche. Their comfort zone. The one place they can be themselves, and act like themselves. Do you know your fortress of solitude? Maybe it’s a place in your home or maybe it’s just something you hold close to your heart that no one can take away from you. But everyone should have that one thing. That one thing that they’re passionate about. That one thing that they could talk for hours about and never get bored. Maybe it’s a person, maybe it’s an

“This place makes me feel magical, like I’m on top of the world and that no one can turn me down.” activity, maybe it’s a movie, TV show, book, sports team, video game. Anything. I know I have one. Maybe a few. But I bet everyone can think of that one thing. That one thing that’s brought up in conversation that you will turn your ear at if heard. Sometimes it’s hard to find that comfort zone. Especially if you don’t know what you’re looking for. But have you have ever been in a situa-

tion where you are just completely calm and relaxed? It’s like you’ve completely gone into a Zen mode. I know I feel comfortable when I’m around certain people. I feel confident that I won’t be hurt or picked

The Teen Take Elizabeth Nygren on. It’s a nice feeling. But in some situations, it’s different. Maybe you’re at a gathering, and you feel uncomfortable and there’s nobody that you know or that you can talk to. That’s the worst place to be. People say that the best you and best work comes out when you’re not in your comfort zone. But why change something that isn’t broken? Of course, everyone’s different and you can’t change that, but I believe I work just fine in my comfort zone and where I’m at. Going to a party and being alone isn’t going to make me a better person. Maybe I do need to get out more, but being in your comfort zone can be just as well. What’s your comfort zone? Is it your home? Your friends? Family?

Do you not have one? Are you comfortable everywhere? It varies for everyone, I would think, so maybe you don’t need one. A comfort zone is going to pertain to who you are as a person. It’s that place where you can forget of all of life’s little problems. The place to think. If you are completely comfortable with hanging out with a large crowd and talking to too many people at once, that’s good. If you are absolutely fine with sitting alone, while drinking a beverage, that’s fine too. Don’t let other people have a voice in your comfort zone, either. Because they’re not you and they don’t know how you feel in certain situations. “Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive, who is youer than you!” wrote Dr. Seuss. Your comfort zone is you. And that can’t be changed. That’s who you are. I’m comfortable in one area. One area that makes me confident and that I can be myself, no matter who’s around. This place makes me feel magical, like I’m on top of the world and that no one can turn me down. That I am the sun and stars, and that I shine. The world is at my fingertips. And in your comfort zone, it’s at yours too. Do you know the feeling? Elizabeth Nygren is in Grade 11 at Prince Charles Secondary School. Simplification omits key information To the Editor: The recent letters about the West by Larry Ewashen (“West has painted itself into a corner”, Feb. 5) and Prime Minister Stephen Harper by Alex Ewashen (“Canadians have allowed changed by Harper”, Feb. 5) were very interesting, but there seems to be some missing information. Was communism grim? Would it be grim if armed communists took all my family’s food, and as I starved, I watched my children starve to death? That was the fate of a million Ukrainian families in the Holodomor. The Soviet gulag, Mao’s great leap forward and Pol Pot’s displacement, brutalization, torture and murder of a couple of million Cambodians would seem to qualify as grim, bleak, and brutal. It seems that we have already forgotten these horrors of communism, so a grim memorial to commemorate the victims of communism is appropriate, and necessary. Why would the West snub Russian president Vladimir Putin, former communist and member of the KGB, a hard working man who has managed to save $40 billion from his salary as a civil servant? Perhaps Putin’s invasions of Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, and threats to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have made him a less than desirable dinner guest? Perhaps Putin’s breach of the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances in which Russia committed to “respect the independence and sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine” seemed too reminiscent of Hitler and Czechoslovakia? Alex is clearly unhappy with what he refers to as “Harperism”. If there has been a change in Canada’s approach to international affairs, the new doctrine, “responsibility to protect”, which has been aggressively promoted by Lloyd Axworthy

oPiNioN LiNe

(Liberal) and Bob Rae (Liberal), is at least partly responsible. Canada’s participation in the Kosovo war was under Jean Chrétien (Liberal), not Harper. Similarly, Canada’s participation in the Korean War (Louis St. Laurent, Liberal) and the Second World War (William Lyon Mackenzie King, Liberal) predated Harper. With regard to Canada’s “sterling reputation as a peacekeeping nation”, perhaps 40 years in Cyprus is a success, but Rwanda (Chretien)? It would thus appear incorrect to credit Harper alone for an international approach different than Lester B. Pearson’s. The world is a complex place. No one is perfect. Wisdom is difficult to find in oversimplification. Peter Bulkowski Calgary

Later in Toronto, I was more or less prepared for freelance status for various radio programs for CBC. Today I listen to a variety of radio stations from around the world, RTE (Ireland), Sputnik (Russia), DW (Germany), ABC (Australia) and, of course, BBC, NPR and PRI. There are also CBC archives available and other Canadian shows such as Charles Adler from Winnipeg. In many ways, radio is still our shortcut to the outside world. Larry Ewashen Creston

Fossil fuel keeps wars Radio still a from ending connection to world

To the Editor: Lorne Eckersley’s recent column (“Forty years of memories”, Feb. 26) on radio certainly resonates with me. Growing up in the rural 1940s, radio was our contact with the outside world and I remember cold winter nights when reception was particularly good, learning about the cities of Lethbridge and Calgary, though one had never been there, my father listening to the news (CFCN) presented by the Alberta Wheat Pool. We also received an evening radio program from Montana featuring country music. Those were the days of Lefty Frizzel, Webb Pierce and Hank Snow. When I went to the University of Alberta in Edmonton, I immediately joined RadSoc, the radio society that ran the campus radio station. We also produced a one-hour weekly broadcast for CKUA featuring campus events, on site concerts and sporting events.

To the Editor: The Stephen Harper Conservative government is synonymous with the United States’ CIA and Republican Party. The Fortress America war economy is based on fossil fuel extraction and use. Try to wage a war without fossil fuel. What we are witnessing is fundamentalist Christians battling fundamental Muslims — both focused on bringing about Armageddon through violence. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” explains the so-called Christian Harper Conservatives’ fear-hype about terrorism. With all the war waged in the Middle East and the trauma suffered by countless families — who, like you and me, want peace — it is any wonder that terror should come to our lands? Stop the war mongering, stop the excessive fossil fuel extraction. Life is and can be such a glorious opportunity to love and cherish and nurture. Save lives, bring peace back to Canada and keep the planet Earth livable for our grandchildren. Susan Eyre Yahk

Connection to earth runs deep

When the Chinese encountered the Pali word for meditation, dhyana, they translated it into something that sounded like dhyana in Chinese. They chose the word chan, which became zen in Japan. But chan or zen doesn’t mean meditation; it only sounds like the Pali

A Zen'sEye View Kuya Minague word that means meditation. The literal meaning of chan is to “bow before mountains and rivers”. So when we sit in Zen meditation, that is what we are doing, bowing before mountains and rivers. The Chinese never looked at meditation as something that is good for our physical and mental health. For them, meditation was simply an expression of spiritual truth. To sit in meditation was to return to the oneness of nature.

www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca 7

When we sit, we are like mountains and rivers. We sit strong and tall, like a mountain. We are made mostly of water, and the rivers of our circulatory systems are constantly flowing. The mountain winds move through our lungs. But we don’t usually pay attention to our body unless we are sick. We just assume that our bodies will carry out the activities that support our survival. But the truth is that our bodies have a deep and profound relationship to the earth. We are, like the earth, made up of water, wind, fire and minerals. In fact, we are just another temporary manifestation of the earth. If we could speed up time, we could see us all rising up and returning to the earth. Everything does this. Plants, animals, insects, rocks, even mountains and rivers, eventually return to the earth. It’s as if the earth is breathing everything out and then back in. It’s not just our thoughts that come and go — it’s everything. When we sit in zazen we begin to realize that this coming into and moving out of being is actually what is going on here. That’s what this life is all about. This eternal process of taking on and losing shape and form is always going on.

When we remember that this body is just a miniscule part of a huge ongoing transformation, we realize how small our lifetime is compared to the enormity of this eternal process. We begin to realize how miraculous it is that we are so well taken care of. If we had to remember to breathe or remind our hearts to beat, we‘d all be dead. But this enormous process takes care of it all. We just appeared, and from then on everything has been taking care of us. This is why we sit in meditation. This is why we bow before mountains and waters. Suggested practice: At your next meal, take the time to notice the food in front of you. The food that sustains your life is the product of a process that has been going on since time immemorial. Sun, rain, earth and air have all contributed to your meal. Others have planted it, cultivated it and harvested it so you could live. Generate gratitude. Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at Sakura-ji, Creston’s zendo. Tidy tools, gardens help plants stay healthy

March 7 rolls around every year and if you own your own business it is time to pay

with good health and in 15 years I’ve only had a few times when I needed to take time out of my work day to deal with health issues. A few years back, I was in the doctor ’s office getting a couple of stitches. The doctor was most impressed that I’d just sterilized my orchard pruners with a bleach soluEvan Davies tion before accidenworker’s compensation fees. tally stabbing myself in the As the owner, I couldn’t ever thigh. just over two acres of cherries. In the apple block, I raked out all of the leaf litter, old twigs and picked up any new prunings. From the cherries, I picked up all the prunings and removed the leaves from the grass between the tree rows. The prunings have all been chipped. The leaves mostly composted but some had to be burnt. What is left should rot down to make some fine compost. The idea is to remove disease inoculum from the orchard blocks. I do this in my home gardens too. Sanitation was why my pruners had just been sterilized before my accident. By keeping your pruning tools clean, you minimize the spread of bacterial disease from tree to tree. While cleaning up the apple block, I found what looked like

It has been a great honour to work in Creston as a physician over the last 10 years. I am planning on moving away in the summer of 2015. three kinds of overwintering caterpillars, residual aphid colonies from last fall, a leaf fungus (apple scab) and lots of evidence of voles. The cherry block seems pretty clean with some bacterial canker (diseased wood) and probably some mildew hiding in the leaf litter, but no evidence of any insect pressure. The reason I spend the time to do all this clean up by hand is so that I can go into the next season with a fresh start. I do the same in my greenhouses when time permits. All the leftover growing media is removed and the tables and floors are bleached. Why leave it to chance? In the orchard we have pruned for light and airflow into the trees. I’ll give them a thorough dormant spray with oil and sulphur. The dormant oil will suffocate any overwintering insects and the lime sulphur will control overwintering fungus. You can do this anytime between now and when the flower buds start to pop. The irrigation systems in the orchards are designed to place water directly into the soil

so as to keep new leaves dry and prevent disease later in the year. We mow the grass between the tree rows after the spring bloom in the orchard has finished so that any insects in the grass aren’t encouraged to hop into the trees and ruin the developing fruit. The weeds are kept down under the trees to prevent insect and disease pressure in the orchard trees too. Of course, the trees are fed nutrients to keep them growing and healthy, but not too much nitrogen or they will grow too much leaf. By learning some of the better growing practices, you can save yourself a few headaches and better enjoy the results of your labours. Last but not least, when it comes time to water your garden (or greenhouse seedlings), if you can apply the water early in the day you greatly increase the chances of the leaves drying. This will go a long way to keeping your crops healthy and disease free. Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

What do garter snakes eat? Most of you would say they eat frogs. Quite right! It’s quite a little feat to swallow a frog. It is even more of a feat if the frog, like a bullfrog, is apt to swallow the snake. If the snake

the nest. It gained “footholds” by using body compression friction and traction afforded by the belly scales. I didn’t see it reach the nest but assumed it was after the young birds. Snakes have a keen sense of smell and will, if given the opportunity, eat young and eggs of birds. Like humans, mammals and birds, snakes smell with their nose but also “smell” with their tongues. They don’t strike with their tongue, which is harmless, but, often, frequently flick the tongue in and out, taking in dust from the air, from the ground and from nearby objects. This is how they eat dust. By licking and eating dust they can assess their environment through a sensory organ, known as the Jacobsen’s organ, located in the roof of the mouth. I can remember, as a kid, crashlanding with my bike and getting a mouth full of grit and dust or getting dust in the face from a car passing on a dry, dusty road. Not very nice! Then there is the expression “bit the dust” which sometimes implies a mishap or end of story. Eating dust is not something that many people would choose. Snakes do purposefully and deliberately bite, eat and taste dust. There’s truth in that biblical reference that says, “the serpent shall eat dust”. (Genesis 3:14, King James Version) This phrase has much symbolism but is also very real, as scientific studies have shown. In fact, the field of science, in recent years, has turned up more discoveries that make more sense out of some biblical topics than what some people would like to acknowledge, about snakes or about anything in the natural world. Out There Ed McMackin can’t eat the frog, perhaps the frog can eat the snake. Snakes are equipped to swallow frogs and other little critters that appear even a little larger than what we think they could swallow. In swallowing, they do a lot of stretching but they don’t do it without getting, not their nose out of joint, but their jaws separated to allow the throat to expand. Now the snake does get a big lump in the throat, which follows on along the digestive tract getting smaller as it is digested. But a garter snake’s menu can include more than frogs. They feast on other amphibians, perhaps other snakes and lizards, on insects and their larva and fish. They also eat mice and voles and their young, and have some items on their list that we, perhaps, would not like to think of. Once out on a trail I heard some hissing and other bird stress calls coming from a bush. There I found a song sparrow nervously flitting about the lower part of the bush, which contained a nest and young, making sounds that I would never expect from a sparrow. The object of the sparrow’s distress was a garter snake climbing up the trunk and limbs of the bush, already halfway to

So whether it’s a cool cube of ice or the fiery spice of tikka masala you long for, bring your personal food craving tales to this talk and learn what they may be telling you about your health. Shearer is a Crestonbased clinical herbal therapist and registered holistic nutritionist with a passion for health science, herbal therapy and nutrition. After graduating in Vancouver she has returned to her hometown of Creston. She hopes to contribute to the community she loves as a health consultant and educator. Vigna family celebrates 25th with Dairy Queen BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

The 75-year success story of Dairy Queen is mirrored in the franchise’s long history right here in Creston. This month, Ralph and Mary Vigna and family celebrate a quarter-century of operating a Creston landmark that opened, coincidentally, a half-century ago. “The time has just flown by,” Ralph says, with Mary nodding in agreement. “When we came to Creston, Michael was nine years old and now he is running the operation.” The Dairy Queen “system’s” recipe for success is a simple one, according to the website of International Dairy Queen, Inc.: “It’s been a combination of hardworking people who own and operate restaurants and greattasting food and tempting treats served in our establishments. “The founders of the Dairy Queen system were men and women who introduced a new kind of dessert treat and, in the process, developed the foundation of the franchising industry. The history of the Dairy Queen system is a story of a unique product that created an industry.” That unique product, over the years, has been associated with family outings for generations. “Our phenomenal story began with a 10 cent sale of a then unnamed product on August 4, 1938, in Kankakee, Illinois,” says the website. “A father and son in the mix plant business in Green River, Illinois, had been experimenting with a soft frozen dairy product for some time. They contacted Sherb Noble, a good friend and customer, who agreed to run the ‘all you can eat’ trial sale at his walk-in ice cream store. Within two hours, he dished out more than 1,600 servings of the new dessert.” Soft serve ice cream was born, and it’s still a popular order at the drive-thru window or the counter inside, especially in the warmer weather. The Creston Valley got its first lick at Dairy Queen products in 1964. The grand opening of a franchise operated by Oliver Salvador was greeted with the headline “Dairy Queen Latest Valley Asset.” “The new fireproof, pink-tinted block building of 27x42 feet and located opposite the curling

rink on Canyon Street is the latest in modern layout and appointments,” the Creston Review story read. “Seating accommodation includes the coffee counter and individual chairs with table arms, installed at the front of the large windows. “The latest in display show cases has been installed which will contain Hard-Pak Dairy Queen items. The moveable plastic top makes this unit a selfserve unit. “All cooking and ice cream units are of stainless steel and installed so as to give maximum efficiency to staff and service to the customers.” Further on, the story offers a quick glimpse of what set Dairy Queen apart from its competitors. “Ice cream on a new $6,000 machine is manufactured in the space of three minutes, ready to serve customers. “The new Sizzle Kitchen will prepare a menu of fast ordered foodstuffs which will be served piping hot.” In December 1941, the United States entered the Second World War. There were fewer than 10 Dairy Queen stores. When the war ended, the franchise — an almost unheard of system back then — exploded, growing to 100 stores by 1947. Huge growth is indicated by the fact that there were 1,446 stores by 1950 and 2,600 in 1955. Today, there are more than 6,000 Dairy Queen restaurants in the U.S., Canada and 20 other countries, making DQ one of the world’s largest fast food chains. “Although much has changed in the world and in the Dairy Queen system through the years, one constant has remained,” the website says. “Dairy Queen stores are still, and always have been, the place to find Little League teams celebrating a victory, business people on their lunch break and families taking time out to enjoy great food and soft serve treats.” When the Vigna family took over the Creston Dairy Queen from Louie Wishloff and his family, Ralph and Mary quickly established a reputation as good and fair employers. Working at the grill or counter was a job that provided many a high school student with funds to buy their first car or go off to pursue postsecondary education. Businesses with a long history in a community don’t remain

static, and the couple still looks fondly back to 2001, when the drive-thru window was opened. It was no small feat, with DQ closely neighboring a building that was home to the town’s much-used laundromat. “We had no choice but to purchase that building in order to create the space to make the drive-thru work,” Ralph says. “But the laundromat was needed and we didn’t want to inconvenience its customers, so we kept it in operation.” As much as any change, it was the drive-thru that allowed Dairy Queen to remain competitive — customers demanded the convenience and the response was positive. An interior redesign in 2006 allowed for the introduction of the popular Grill and Chill concept. While Ralph and Mary have stepped back to spend more time with their grandchildren the family ties carry on. Michael now manages the store and it remains as vital to Creston Valley residents and tourists as ever. Four days of celebration are planned to celebrate the 25/50/75 landmarks. From Friday through Monday, specials will be offered and raffles will be held. On Monday, customers get free soft serve cones.

Art offers colour at chamber, new view at library BY VAL VAN DER POEL

Although we have had a fabulous winter, I am sure all of us are looking forward to the colour and blossoms that spring will bring. You don’t have to wait — you can always get a dose of colour by checking out the new art displays at the Creston Valley Public Library and Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. The Art the Chamber display will be “Bursting with Colour” and full of many of our favourite artists. The Alfoldys are back with

their unique styles, Ute Bachinski will be showing both pastels and watercolours, visitors will enjoy Karen Arrowsmith’s subtle watercolours and Laura Leeder’s delicate depictions of flowers and porcelain, the different styles by Carol Schloss and James McDowell will add just the perfect touch of variety. In addition to these familiar names you will see a variety pack of art from Carol and Jennifer Huscroft, the fascinating metal sculpture by Aaron Weitman, the colourful and vibrant work of Cheryl Place and the always interesting art of Carrie Lucas. chamber display also has two newcomers who will be sharing their art with us: Don Towstego with woodcarvings and Linda Mahoney who is exhibiting a fascinating hat. This display promises to be very interesting and I can’t wait to see what everyone is showing. “Bursting with Colour” runs until April 30 so you will have plenty of time to check it out and maybe find the perfect gift for a birthday or for Easter. The Art in the Library display is “An Artistic View” and features two local artists, Carrie Lucas and Kurtis Ladner, as well as a Creston Art Club member, Joe Horvath, who comes over every week from Salmo to paint with us. Those who are used to seeing Lucas’s encaustic art will be interested to see some of her watercolours and oils — you might even say, “I didn’t know you could do that!” Ladner’s country landscapes are a charming glimpse of the artist’s view of the world. I hope that Horvath will display some of his oils and some of his pencil work; two different views from one artist and both of them fascinating. The Art in the Library display ends on April 25. Remember the art on display at the library is for sale by contacting the artist or the library will give you my contact information. The community art displays are sponsored by the Community of Creston Arts Council, the Creston Valley Public Library and the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre to enable artists from Yahk to Riondel to display their art and to let the public see the wonders of the world through the artists’ eyes. If you would like your name on the list to display at one of these venues, contact Val van der Poel at 250866-5772.

Stetski FROM PAGE 1

He has a bachelor of science degree in ecology with a minor in economics, and a teaching certificate. “Since his election in 2011, David Wilks has been heard saying he is not allowed to vote the way his constituents want him to in Parliament,” Stetski said. “He can only vote the way Stephen Harper tells him to, even when his constituents tell him that they strongly disagree. “Democracy is poorly served by silencing a whole region in this way. The people of KootenayColumbia deserve better. There is only one person in parliament whose job it is to represent the people of Kootenay-Columbia. I’m going to be that strong voice in Ottawa.” His campaign officially kicks off on Sunday at the Manual Training Centre in Cranbrook at 1 pm. The public is welcome. “I’m looking forward to

RegioNaL News

a great campaign,” he said. “It is clear that if we want to defeat the Conservatives in this area we will all need to work together to elect an NDP MP. “I’ll be travelling throughout this area meeting with people across the riding right through until election day. I’m looking forward to getting reacquainted with old friends and making a whole bunch of new ones. We’ll see you all on the campaign trail!” Stetski has been married to his wife Audrey for 36 years and has three adult children and a granddaughter. Opponents announced to date are the incumbent Wilks and Green Party candidate William Green. After five landslide victories by Jim Abbott, under the Reform, Alliance and Conservative banners, former RCMP member and mayor of Sparwood Wilks romped to victory in 2011 by a nearly 10,000-vote margin over the NDP’s Mark Shmigelsky. Wilks captured 55.88 per cent of the vote.

SD8 approves policy to protect students from bullying BY WILL JOHNSON Nelson Star

Before the Kootenay Lake school board approved a policy amendment on Feb. 24 intended to protect students from discrimination and bullying due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, superintendent Jeff Jones took the opportunity to add his voice to the debate. “It’s really timely that this has finally come to the board for consideration because Feb. 25 is Pink Shirt Day,” Jones said, expressing his admiration for the high school students responsible for starting the anti-bullying initiative. In an emotional public address, Jones recounted how while looking for a superintendent position years ago he had to keep in mind whether his new community would accept his relationship with his husband, on account of still-prevalent homophobia in Canada. And though Jones believes the Kootenays are a fairly progressive, accepting environment, he believes there’s more work to be done before

students will live in a hate and bullying-free environment. “In speaking with my husband, he has told me we’re not as far along as we’d like to think. As superintendent I can talk very openly about my relationship with my husband, but I had to look for a community where I would feel safe. That tells me we’re not very far along.” Jones said he surrounds himself with like-minded individuals, but noted that’s not always an option for students. He said this policy, which has been years in the making, will help make school environments more inclusive for students of every sexual identity and gender. But he was initially reluctant to bring it forward. “As many people know, I’ve been hesitant because I didn’t want the community to get confused and think I was bringing it forward as a personal agenda item.” And though he wasn’t involved in the voting process, he expressed his enthusiasm for hearing the debate.

Brian McDowell November 14,1946 ~ March 5, 2015

Brian McDowell passed away in Creston, BC on March 2, 2015 at the age of 68. Brian McDowell was born in Toronto, Ontario on November 14, 1946 to George and Edith McDowell.

Brian grew up in Toronto and met his wife Ani McDowell at Humber College Toronto, Ontario. After a short courting period they married on December 12, 1970. After the birth of their first child in 1977 they moved to Fairview, Alberta where Brian learned the ins and outs of operating a retail business. In February of 1981 Brian and his brother Ian bought a retail business in downtown Creston, which became known as McDowell Department Store. Together the two McDowell families served the Creston Valley for 27 years until the business sadly closed on March 8, 2008. Shortly after the store closed Brian became a resident of Swan Valley Lodge where he was cared for by the wonderful people there until his passing on March 5, 2015. Brian and Ani have three children. Cameron was born in Brampton, Ontario where Brian and Ani lived until their move to Fairview. Two months

after buying the business in Creston their second child Mitchell was born at the Creston hospital and in 1984 their third child Doreon was born. Brian had many activities he participated in. During his younger years he enjoyed scuba diving, hockey and he was an avid tennis player. Later he continued playing hockey with the local Fuddle Ducks recreational hockey team. Brian was a member of the Creston Valley Golf Course and loved to golf with friends and family. Brian was predeceased by his parents George and Edith McDowell.

Brian is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ani; son Cameron (Linsey); son Mitchell; daughter Doreon (Denes) Lengyel; brothers Ian (Darlene), daughter Stephanie of Creston and Colin with partner Senga and children Lauren, Kaela and Craig of Oakville, Ontario. A Celebration of Life is being held on March 10, 2015, 11a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion with Harry Haberstock officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests a donation to the Alzheimer's Society of B.C.

“This policy has been a long time coming,” said board chair Lenora Trenaman. “Change or not, I’m hoping we’ll put this forward to the right committee for the right step.” Curtis Bendig spoke in favour of the motion, saying it enshrines what “the vast majority of us now know intuitively: discrimination is unacceptable. “There is no question our board and district are committed to creating a safe, progressive community for our students and staff. I would urge my fellow trustees to bring this policy into effect.” Trustee Sharon Nazaroff proposed an amendment to the policy, but some board members took issue with a phrase that asserted queer students face “difficult and unique challenges” and voted it down. “There’s a certain assumption here I’m not prepared to make about a large group of very diverse people, though I appreciate the intent,” said Bendig. Russell Vernon Browell March 19, 1929 ~ February 25, 2015 Russ passed away peacefully at Kootenay Lake Hospital on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 after a brief illness. Russ was born and raised in Canyon, BC. He began his career as a heavy equipment operator for the Department of Highways in 1947. He met his wife Barb in Watrous, Saskatchewan in 1955 and after their second meeting in 1956 they snuck away and eloped at the "Hitching Post" in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and embarked on 56 years of a loving marriage. Russ was an avid hunter for many years and was a member of the Creston Revolver Club. Russ and Barb were involved in square dancing for over 25 years in both Creston and Nelson. Camping was also a regular summer activity at both Kootenay Lake and "The Pend d'Oreille" near Sandpoint, Idaho. In 1972, Russ and his family moved to Nelson for him to become a low bed truck driver. After the kids were old enough Barb always enjoyed going with Russ on many trips all around the province and got to be known as Russ's co-pilot. Someone even made a step to help Barb get up into the "Big Rig". He resided here for the remainder of his life. Russ was predeceased by his wife Barbara; father LeRoy; mother Maude; brothers and sisters Helen, June, Budd, Earl, Leona, Guy, twin sister Betty, and niece Lavonne. He leaves behind his sister Sharon Knoll; daughter Lori Bagshaw; grandchildren Kirstie (Jeremy) Tjader and Lindsey (Murray) Plante; great-grandchildren Mackenzie and Brady; sons Ross Browell and Ty (Tonia) Browell; grandchildren Cody and Kale; and several nieces and nephews. You could always see Russ at the mall having coffee, laughing with his buddies. He did security for many years for the Nelson Maple Leafs hockey team and was a regular blood donor for almost 40 years. The family would like to thank Dr. Noiles who goes above and beyond, the ambulance and emergency room staff and the many nurses that cared for him. Cremation has taken place and at Russ' request here will be no service. However the family is planning to hold a tea in April to celebrate the lives of both Russ and Barb Browell. Arrangements are under the direction of Thompson Funeral Service Ltd. Thank you Megan for all your compassion. Online condolences may be expressed at www.thompsonfs.ca

SCAM MYTHBUSTERS Busting these common myths will minimize your chances of being scammed. • All companies, businesses and organizations are legitimate because they are licensed and monitored by the government: This is not always true. While there are rules about setting up and running a business or a company in Canada, scammers can easily pretend to have approval when they don’t. Even businesses that are licensed could still try to scam you by acting dishonestly. • All Internet websites are legitimate: This is not always true. Websites are quite easy and cheap to set up. The scammers can easily copy a genuine website and trick you into believing it is legitimate. • There are short cuts to wealth that only a few people know: This is not always true. Ask yourself the question: if someone knew a secret to instant wealth, why would they be telling their secret to others? • Scams involve large amounts of money: This is not always true. Sometimes scammers target a large number of people and try to get a small amount of money from each person. • Scams are always about money: This is not always true. Some scams are aimed at stealing personal information from you. GOLDEN RULES Remember these golden rules to help you beat the scammers. • Always get independent advice if an offer involves money, personal information, time or commitment. • There are no guaranteed get-rich-quick schemes—sometimes the only people who make money are the scammers. • Do not agree to offers or deals right away. If you think you have spotted a great opportunity, insist on time to get independent advice before making a decision. • Do not hand over money or personal information, or sign anything until you have done your homework and checked the credentials of the company that you are dealing with. • Do not rely on glowing testimonials: find solid evidence of a company’s success. • Log directly on to a website that you are interested in rather than clicking on links provided in an email. • Never send money, or give credit card or online account details to anyone you do not know and trust. • If you spot a scam or have been scammed, get help. Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, the Competition Bureau or your local police for assistance. Scammers are imaginative and manipulative. They know how to push your buttons to produce the response they want. The Creston Valley Advance reminds you to report any suspicious calls to Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre 1-888-495-8501

Kootenay teams second, third in playdowns BY ANDREW McINNIS Creston Curling Centre

The Creston Curling Club is almost through its peak season with the BC School Sports provincial playdowns occurring Feb. 18-21. The Doyle rink from Smithers Secondary took first place in the boys division with a perfect record of 7-0. Second place went to the Chan rink from David Thompson in Vancouver with a 6-1 record, and the Bartlett rink from Grand Forks Secondary, representing the Kootenay zone, finished in third place at 5-2. As for the girls, the Reese-Hansen Rink from Mt. Elizabeth Secondary in Kitimat took first place at 6-1, second was the Kootenays’ Buchy Rink from Selkirk Secondary in Kimberley at 6-2, and third was the Drexel rink from Centennial in Coquitlam at 5-3.

It was a very exciting weekend with the best junior curlers in the province playing some great games. Creston did a great job hosting the event and

the centre hopes to host many more like it in years to come. League play is wrapping up in the next couple of weeks with playoffs

beginning soon. The club’s wind-up dinner and awards night will take place March 21, capping off another successful season of Creston curling.

Bullying policy FROM PAGE 17

In a conversation with the Star after the meeting, Bendig said he believed the additional clause was voted down due to the board’s reluctance to mess with the policy’s wording at the last minute. “The important piece to me was respecting the work of the policy and governance committee. I wasn’t comfortable doing all this wordsmithing at the 11th hour.” Becky Blair, president of the Creston Valley Teachers Association, was present specifically to see if the policy would pass. “Within our union we’ve wanted this policy for many years,” she said. She noted that when the policy was first brought to the board, ten districts already had a similar one in place. There are now 30 districts with comparable policies. “We’re finally catching up. We’re about in the middle of the pack,” she said. When she learned the policy had passed, Blair called herself “joyous” and said she wanted to “dance on the tabletops.” “I hope this shows that this board recognizes the fact there is a group of students who need particular policies and procedures to ensure they’re well treated. What we would like to see is programs and clubs in school that address these concerns.” Trenaman said ultimately the policy is intended to include every student, regardless of religion, skin colour or sexual identity. “It’s about creating an environment where everybody feels like they have a place and will be embraced. Everyone has to feel they have a safe place.”
