Land gift: Director wants more information about property From Pg. 1

the property. Wooden structures serve as informal bridges crossing the water filling the bottom of the ravine.” Hansen recommended the regional district board of directors accept the land gift as it would have no financial impact on the regional district and protecting the site as green space would have ecological, social and economical benefits.

But the board, at its Wednesday meeting, was reluctant to accept the property. Are a D D i re c tor Brenda Leigh, whose jurisdiction the property falls under, said she wanted more time to “fully investigate where this property is.” The board agreed to defer the issue to the next board meeting on March 26. Hansen, meanwhile, said that if the board

does decide to accept the land gift, regional district staff are recommending the property be added to the organization’s parks inventory. “Impact to insurance costs will be minimal and will therefore not have budget implications,” Hansen said. “Future budgets will include provision of funds for board consideration to provide signage, investigation and removal of invasive

trict that there is room for improvement. “I’m not saying we have any ‘quick fixes’ to help Strathcona Regional District reduce worker injuries and absence duration, but we would be happy to meet with you, your safety advisory (if you have one) and/or your safety committee, to see if there are any suggestions to be made,” Cook said. Bienvenu acknowledged that in 2009 the number of claims among Strathcona Gardens staff were among the lowest in the province and at that time there was a contracted safety officer on site on a regular basis. Bienvenu said while he doesn’t want to jump to conclusions, there will be further investigation. “Both the association and WorkSafeBC have been contacted to obtain further details regarding the 2013 claims,” Bienvenu said. “There are a number of related fac-

tors to consider around employee claims and it’s important that the information is analyzed before reaching any conclusions or making recommendations. “Inspections, assessments, crew talks and training programs have b e e n i mp l e m e nt e d and management and the JHSC (joint health and safety committee) will continue to work towards improvements in these areas to reduce the risks of injury for staff,” he added. “Strathcona Gardens is committed to continuously improving its occupational health and safety performance. It is a good business practice and the responsibility of all staff.” Bienvenu said regional district staff will prepare a full report of the Workers’ Compensation claims for 2013 and bring that to the Strathcona Gardens Commission for recommendations.

ousness of the report.” According to the report, the injury rate in 2013 for local governments with 20 to 99 employees was 4.25 while in comparison, the Strathcona Regional District’s was 15.87. The report also indicated that it’s taking longer for injured employees to return to work than it did previously. The time lost due to injury in the Strathcona Regional District increased from 46 days in 2009 to 319 days in 2013. Finally, in 2009 the regional district had a 31 per cent merit ranking for WorkSafeBC assessment while in 2013 the organization had a two per cent demerit ranking, and paid nearly $54,000 in assessment fees. Perils of distracted driving J.R. RaRdon CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

I

saac Poulton stood before a judge Wednesday and insisted the vehicle he was driving had barely grazed a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk. But the magistrate was having none of it. “You have been found guilty of the crime of dangerous driving causing death,” he told Poulton sternly as his Timberline Secondary School classmates laughed. “Hey, I thought she was was going to live,” Poulton said. “I think she’s fine. I was going, like, 10.” The judge — and Poulton’s “victim” — were nothing more than bytes in a simulated computer program set up at Timberline for a daylong distracted driving workshop for Grade 11 students. But the matter of driving while texting, phoning or engaging in other distracting behaviours is deadly serious. “You can see what we’re trying to accomplish here,” said Caroline Robinson, ICBC Safety Coordinator for Mid and North Vancouver Island. “So many kids are wedded to their phones, and this shows them the very real dangers of trying to use them while driving.” The program was jointly hosted by ICBC and the Campbell River RCMP, who performed mock sobriety checks and had students navigate an obstacle course wearing goggles. The distracted driving simulator, making its first appearance at Timberline, utilizes a steering wheel with turn signals and accelerator and brake pedals. Students view and navigate an urban street system with

all its traffic, pedestrians and other obstacles on a large computer screen. The action really heats up when a digital “friend” slides into the passenger seat and begins a constant stream of patter, including demands for the driver to call and text his boss to explain why he’s late for work. On top of all that, drivers had Robinson barking reminders and classmates over their shoulders laughing and pointing. So how long does the simulation run? “It depends on how far they get through it,” said Robinson. “Not many get through to the end.” As Sage Lim attempted to text and

drive, a classmate looking on said, “Whoa, you just missed that dog!” “Dog?” Lim replied, looking up from the phone. Diana Camerin, Timberline Career Facilitator, coordinated the event and giggled through many of the simulations. “That dog has died over and over again,” she said. On a more serious note, Camerin said, the ICBC is a program designed to educate students who are just beginning or about to begin their driving careers on the dangers of — and laws against — distracted driving. “We’ve done a great

job with seat belts,” she said. “Hopefully we can do the same with distracted driving.” Swerving, missing stop signs and hitting a dog or cat earn a red warning bar across the screen. A minor accident ends the simulation with the whoop of a police siren, while a major accident or striking of a pedestrian brings on the judge. “It’s actually pretty close to real driving,” said Poulton, who then sees the passenger he struck re-enter the crosswalk as classmate Erin Harding approaches the intersection. “Don’t hit her!” he warns.

T

h e C ampb el l River Mir ror is celebrating Campbell River Women in Business with a special, 32-page feature and a mix and mingle that is being held March 19 at the Maritime Heritage Centre. “I am so happy to be a part of our first annual Women in Business mixer,” said Maria E. Kirley, Campbell River

Mirror Sales Consultant. “This is going to be an event to remember; there’s just nothing like meeting in person to share your story or to get some feedback from someone who’s ‘been there, done that.’” Over 100 of Campbell River’s female business leaders will attend the mingle and hear from the guest speakers that include Audrey Rippin-

gale from She Works She Plays, a mobile clothing and accessory outlet for women in trades, and Breanna Podlasly, a young actress on the Netflix TV Series The 100 and aspiring artist. This event is brought to you by the Gold Sponsors: Campbell River Mirror, Garat Financial, Thrifty Foods and Silver Sponsors including Discovery Specialty Adver-

To get yours, contact the Campbell River Mirror at 250-287-9227 or e-mail publisher@campbellrivermirror.com.

Calls about paper delivery are legitimate

How thoroughly the Campbell River Mirror is reaching its readers is the focus of an automated telephone audit. While the calls will be coming from a U.S.based phone number, Mirror circulation manager Kevin McKinnon said the survey of Campbell River area households is not spam. “These are legitimate phone calls,” McKinnon said. It’s part of our continuing way of making sure our papers are getting out. It’s quality

control.” Alliance for Audited Media – a non-profit, member-based organization that provides independently-verified data and information services – will conduct the weeklong audit beginning on Monday, March 16. The audit will reach out to approximately 10 per cent of households in the Mirror’s circulation area. Respondents will be asked if they regularly receive a free copy of the Campbell River Mirror. Those who don’t, will be

asked if anyone in their household has ever asked that delivery be stopped. “Live” follow-up calls will be made to house-

Our View

Left-lane laws not necessary B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation is hogging the left-hand lane, speeding toward another misplaced priority. Minister Todd Stone’s announcement this month that the province is looking at legislation targeting left-lane hogs on the highway is populist pandering, it’s unnecessary and it’s undesirable. Stone suggests left-lane huggers are particular to British Columbia, coincidentally the province in which he happens to commute to work. Apparently, everyone who drives slower than our transportation minister is a slowpoke and everyone who drives faster than him is a maniac. This isn’t a law for which British Columbians have been clamouring – it seems to have appeared in our rear-view mirror from out of nowhere. One imagines the minister turned red with road rage recently, stuck behind some driver who We say: Sounds failed to accelerate to like Todd Stone B.C.’s new 120-kilometres-per-hour highway had a bad speed limit. commute to work Stone says ICBC statistics and RCMP traffic reports show that failure to keep right causes a lot of collisions, but we suspect that the impatient drivers who surround the cautious ones are every bit as culpable. Must our roads suit only the fast and the furious? Already the B.C. Liberal government has raised speed limits, conditioning motorists to race at Mach 1. Any crackdown on left-lane hogs is going to empower tailgaters and road ragers and cause car crashes. The province has been erecting signs along the highways gently reminding motorists to keep right; that should suffice. Personally, we’re OK with the drivers who plod along in sub-compacts that limit pollution, and if they can’t quite rev up to 120 km/h, well, we’re pretty sure most of them will move over to the right lane just as soon as it’s safe to do so. Yes, the left lane is there to get us where we’re going, faster. Or we could just leave the house a couple of minutes earlier. -Black Press

Letters ● Robron turf would become redundant Plans by the Wewaikai First Nation to develop a major recreation facility at their Quinsam Crossing site will have four soccer pitches - two of which will be of artificial turf and four ball diamonds. This is going to attract many visitors and will be good for the city. I’m sure many citizens of Campbell River will now trust that the council will do the right thing and agree that the all weather field at Robron Park will not now go ahead, thus saving the taxpayers a couple of million dollars. Ideas for revamping B.C. transportation Dear Premier Christy Clark; I am writing to you to offer a solution to the various transportation issues that are currently plaguing B.C. taxpayers and businesses as well as government organizations at all levels. Despite the excellent efforts of the many good people involved with the various transportation related authorities in B.C. and the copious amounts of money being spent on transportation infrastructure, net improvements are marginal and the drivers and commuters of BC – especially the Lower Mainland – remain frustrated and dissatisfied. I submit that the reasons for the current sub-optimal transportation infrastructure improvements and driver/rider dissatisfaction are many: 1. There is no single provincial transportation authority to provide high level planning of all aspects of provincial transportation development and operation. 2. The current profusion of different transportation authorities operate within independent mandates with little or no inter-authority planning or cooperation.

KEVIN MCKINNON

KRISTI PELLEGRIN

MICHELLE HUELLER

3. Each transportation related authority is responsible for raising its own project capital and operations funding. 4. The various transportation authorities are comprised of a mixture of provincial, municipal, and private corporation resources. 5. There is no equity in the application and implementation of provincial transportation projects. The Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges (both very large, expensive projects) have tolls. However, other large transportation projects such as the Sea to Sky Highway, Kelowna Floating Bridge, Kicking Horse Canyon Bridge, etc. have no tolls. The Kootenay Lake ferry and the many river ferries around the province are free but BC Ferries users pay exorbitant fares to use ferries that are part of the same BC and federal highways system. Based on the above, I suggest that a more integrated approach to provincial transportation needs to be taken starting with the establishment of a provincial transportation authority to oversee all types of provincial land and water transportation. This new transportation authority should be

KRISTEN DOUGLAS

DAVE HAMILTON

DEBBIE BAKER

charged with the responsibility of taking a holistic approach to provincial transportation planning, development, and operation to ensure timely, cost effective, and equitable transportation facilities for all British Columbians. To this end, the new authority should examine all aspects of transportation development, operation, and funding and look outside the current “myopic box” for fresh, effective, and equitable solutions. Some ideas worth exploring might be: • Abolish fare zones for buses and Skytrain. The current zone system penalises riders who live further out of town in order to access more affordable housing. A flat transit fare for the entire province would provide equity for all transit users and would encourage more people (especially from outlying areas) to use public transit. • Don’t raise sales tax to finance Translink. This is unfair to commuters who for many different reasons don’t use public transit. It is also a deterrent to visitors who already complain about BC consumer taxes. • Put nominal tolls on all

DARCEY WOOD

ALISTAIR TAYLOR

KIM COOK

major highways, bridges, and tunnels in BC and make the toll the same amount across the province. If a nominal fare of say 10 cents was paid for each GVRD bridge and tunnel crossing there would be no reason for drivers to avoid any route and the cash flow to the provincial transit authority would be enormous. • Expand this across the province and the cash flow numbers just get better. Tolls could be collected automatically just as they are now by TreO. Anyone who can afford to drive a car, pay insurance, and purchase expensive gas can afford 10 cents for a toll charge. Furthermore, out of province cars would be exempt and visitors wouldn’t be hit by higher consumer taxes. Only the users of the provincial transportation system would pay for it. • Use the enormous cash flow from the toll system to fund new projects and operate and maintain the transportation infrastructure. • BC Ferries are an integral part of the BC highway system. Use a portion of the cash flow from the toll system to subsidise BC Ferries. M.J. (Marv) Everett

Tomor row’s engineers and tradespeople provided a glimpse of the future last week as Timberline Secondary School hosted the annual Skills Canada North Island Regional trades competition. Along with challenges in traditional trades like automotive service, cabinetmaking, welding and culinary arts, students got hands-on experience in robotics, digital art and both 2-D and 3-D computer animation, including 3-D printing. “This is sumo kitty,” said Lucy Dabbs, who awaited the sumo robot tournament in the cafeteria while holding a purple, whisker- and tail-wearing wedge of composite with wheels and an electric motor. “I designed it in a 3-D computer program and printed it.” Upstairs in one of the classrooms, another group of students was tasked with program-

3x7 EXPERTS’ Advice What is Metaphysical Life Counselling?

Metaphysical Life Counselling (MLC) is life enhancing guidance that has been created with the use of metaphysical knowledge. This approach gives credibility and prominence to metaphysics. Meta-physics literally means beyond physics. MLC encourages us to go Penny Coté Kearns beyond what is visible, by exploring all aspects of our existence. Pharmacist/Owner Metaphysics is dynamic and therefore its exploration is endless. Still, its research and study is my life’s work. Over the past 40 years I have gained a solid recognition of what this branch of physics means and how it functions – and I am learning more each day. It is with this background that I created MLC. MLC is effective regardless of your level of metaphysical understanding. Intent is much more important. Sessions are always gentle and compassionate, and move at a pace that is most comfortable for the individual. It can take time, so you might want to start now by more deeply exploring the power and potential of metaphysical You.

300 bikes, with another collection drive set for this Saturday at Comox Moving and Storage in the valley. Bikes for Humanity is a global initiative with 50 chapters in eight countries. Bikes donated to the program are packed into a shipping container and sent to remote regions of the world where there is both a need and a local organization to take over once the bikes arrive. The trailer itself remains, and is converted into a “Bicycle Empowerment Centre”, where jobs in bicycle sales and repair give locals an opportunity

for income while the bikes fill a critical transportation need. Since beginning in Canada in 2005, Bikes for Humanity has shipped more than 100,000 bicycles to 10 developing countries, where a total of 125 empowerment centres have been established. “We’re accustomed to riding bikes for recreation here,” said Brian Sebryk, who founded the Comox Valley chapter with help from Dave and Jane Hay. “There, it’s used for work. Forty per cent of the bikes there are used by healthcare workers. Another 20 per cent are used by

teachers and students. “The gift of mobility is making a difference in their lives.” The volunteers acknowledge it may take another year to reach the 500-bicycle mark needed to make the shipment economically viable. Between the purchase of the trailer and the international shipping costs, Bikes for Humanity will have to raise approximately $20,000 for this shipment. To donate to Bikes for Humanity, visit www. b4h-comoxvalley.org. Donate directly or get more information by calling 250-923-2929.

t was not the typical location for an art gallery, but Campbell River Hospital pulled out all the stops Sunday as it debuted its Art in the Hospital Initiative with a public reception and tour. The unique initiative came together in recent months through the joint efforts of hospital staff, the Campbell River Arts Council and several different community groups and volunteers. Campbell River Seniors Society president Helen Whitaker, an Alberta transplant who had helped establish an arts program and gallery at a hospital in Edmonton, brought up the idea with local artist Jill Paris Rody while taking a class from Rody. Meanwhile, Dr. Caitlin McFadden had contacted Ken Blackburn of the Arts Council on behalf of hospital staff and patients — including her mother. “I’ve worked in hospitals for 30 years, and never noticed how dismal it was until my own mother was brought in as a patient,” said McFadden. “I started phoning any artist I knew, but it was like herding cats until someone put me in touch with Ken.” When Rody put Whitaker in touch with

Blackburn to share her suggestion for an “art path” in those same corridors, he realized he had stumbled onto a “serendipitous” opportunity, as he said in his welcome remarks at Sunday’s reception. “The idea was generated by night staff here,” said Blackburn. “They have to take patients on walks but they have nowhere to go. So why not have stations (of art) that they could take patients to see?” The art itself is an eclectic mix, ranging from pieces by professionals like Paris Rody and Curtis Wilson to fingerpainting from Kwanwatsi pre-schoolers. Artists include students at Carihi and

head injury patients in a special class taught by Paris Rody. The pieces are comprised of basic paintings or watercolours matted and framed to hang on the walls, full-coverage door murals by Paris Rody, and large, hanging aboriginal banners draped by Wilson in a stairwell window.

“Some of it is in very public areas, and some is in patient areas,” said Blackburn. “The art walk is trying to service not only patients in the hospital, but also staff and visitors. So those three considerations were all in mind with this path.” The works will remain for six months, then be

replaced by new art. Other partners in the art path include Ripple Rock Elementary, Family Services, hospital staff and, in a key role,

“2014 was a crucial year for us; we expanded to WestShore area in Victoria at last,” says Ken Schley, QF’s Director of Operations and founding partner. “When we open a new location it’s important to recognize where our growth is coming from our hardworking and loyal QF people. From there, growth stems from our commitment to supporting local communities, innovations that improve our customers’ shopping experiences, and meaningful relationships with national brands and local suppliers.”

Quality Foods has become known for practical innovations in the grocery industry. “We were one of the first in Canada to offer both online shopping and a points reward program, plus My Daily Special which allows customers to pick a non-flyer item for a personal sale price,” says Shawn Tomczyk, QF’s Director of Information Systems. “More recently, we introduced a unique, and so far as we know, unduplicated smartphone app that connects customer selected deals seamlessly to any QF checkout.” Best Managed has recognized world-class Canadian businesses since 1993 and has become one of the nation’s elite business awards programs. “We’re thrilled,” says Schley, “Platinum membership means we are continuing to adapt and grow in changing environments, and that we have been able to stay in pretty good company for an extended period of time. We’re proud of this designation and we know that being recognized in this way means a lot to all of our QF people and to our customers.” Quality Foods is an independent grocer operating twelve award-winning stores on Vancouver Island and Powell River. Roller derby team seeks help in solving decades-old mystery Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

C

ampbell River’s new female roller derby team has been playing Nancy Drew for the past few months in an effort to unravel a mystery that’s worth hundreds of dollars. It’s been a busy last few months for the Rink Minx who recently relocated from the Comox Valley to Campbell River. The team, which was comprised of mostly Campbell River skaters, lost its warehouse in the Comox Valley and took the opportunity to move north after securing practice space at the Community Centre. Then to top it all off, the Rink Minx received a mysterious email just before Christmas from someone on the Lower Mainland. Kim Emsley-Leik, one of the Rink Minx coordinators, said at first

the girls were suspicious but some quick research validated the message. “We got this email telling us that $700 was sitting in the Bank of Canada for an old roller skating club in Campbell River,” Emsley-Leik said. Sure enough, according to Bank of Canada records, $677.01 was

transferred to the Bank of Canada from the Bank of Montreal on Dec. 31, 1987. When accounts become defunct any unclaimed balances are transferred to the Bank of Canada. The last known transaction date is Sept. 1, 1977 and the account is registered to C.R. Roller Skating Society. “They used to be a roller skating club in Campbell River and they had an executive and they have almost $700 sitting in the Bank of Canada,” EmsleyLeik said. “We would like them to donate it to the new Rink Minx of Campbell River, but we need to find the executive.” The Rink Minx searched through the archives at the Museum at Campbell River and have come up with the names of people who sat on the executive. They’re hoping that someone from the public may know one or

two of the members and can put them in touch. Those names are: Grace Brown (president), Denise Dionne (vicepresident), Thelma Navid (recording secretary), Isabella McKenzie (corresponding secretary), Helen Schmuland (treasurer), and Ev Bergsma (instructors rep). The Campbell River Roller Skating Club was founded in 1963 thanks to Iris Millmore, a skater from Britain who was instrumental in establishing the club. The club offered roller skating lessons to children and other aspiring skaters and held a highly-anticipated annual event, Roller Follies, at the old community hall to showcase the club’s skating abilities. The Roller Skating Club was a co-ed mix of all ages, from children to seniors, but the club disbanded sometime around 1971 shortly after Strathcona Gar-

dens was established and other recreational opportunities became available.

The Rink Minx are hoping someone in the community can help put them in contact with the

former members of the Roller Skating Club. Anyone with connections to the former Roller Skating Club can contact Lita at 250-8504936 or by email, rinkminxrollergirls@gmail. com In the meantime, the Rink Minx are gearing up for another bout this summer. Last year’s event, the first in Campbell River, received tremendous support and attracted roughly 700 spectators. “It’s a revival of an old community pastime,” Emsley-Leik says. “A good chunk of the audience was over 60 and that’s because of the nostalgia factor. “Campbell River likes its roller skating, it’s a sport that has huge potential here.”

We have all experienced pain and inflammation. Fortunately, there are two remedies available that use traditional and modern science to effectively and safely provide relief.

Serrapeptase, often referred to as the “miracle enzyme” is a proteolytic enzyme, meaning that it breaks down proteins. It works to reduce pain and inflammation by inhibiting a compound called bradykinin which is part of a cascade of inflammatory responses by our immune system. In acute situations, this mechanism helps protect and assist us with the healing process. Unchecked, it will eventually damage the local tissue leading to disease. Serrapeptase effectively reduces pain, improves blood circulation and allows healing to take place. It can bring much needed relief especially from conditions like arthritis, sinusitis, injury, sports activities, tendonitis, and even carpal tunnel syndrome.

In a more advanced formula, Serrapeptase can be found in a product called Pain X. Pain X combines several traditional and patented natural ingredients to focus directly on joint and muscle pain. One clinically proven ingredient is Perluxan, a patented hops extract. This ingredient selectively blocks the COX-2 enzyme and its inflammatory pathway that leads to the creation of pain and inflammation. Additional ingredients include Turmeric; Boswellia, Devil’s Claw, Bromelain enzyme and Enzogenol; a patented pine bark extract, all which synergistically work to reduce inflammation that leads to pain and reduce damage to joints and tissues. These ingredients provide for both acute immediate benefit and excellent long term support and reinforcement.

Historic tour of hidden inlets

grow again 3x7

Bute Inlet and Desolation Sound lie within one of the most beautiful stretches on the BC coast, but with no road access it’s a place few people get to see. The Museum at Campbell River is offering a tour there aboard heritage vessel Columbia III May 24 to 28. Historian Jeanette Taylor will be on board to share stories of the aboriginal villages and settlements that once dotted this remote coastline. The four-day tour starts in Campbell River and wends through the narrow passages between the Discovery Islands, with daily shore excursions to soak up the sights. Taylor says there is memorable scenery at every turn, opening to new vistas and tales of the rugged individuals who once lived here. “Men like trapper August Schnarr,” says Taylor, “are a storyteller’s dream. Schnarr had to be tough as nails to make a life for himself among the mountains of Bute Inlet, and so did his three daughters.” When a newcomer

asked the trapper for advice about grizzlies, says Taylor, he told him they were no problem. “I just stare them down,” said the old man. “We look at pictographs (paintings on rock bluffs), old homesteads, and forgotten graves,” says Taylor, “all of it with the stunning backdrop of the coastal mountains.” Bute Inlet, which has some of the highest peaks in the province and an equally dramatic history, is always a highlight says Taylor. But the bird sanctuary on Mitlenatch

Island, with its sea lions and hundreds of nesting birds, and Desolation Sound Marine Park top the polls as well. “We pack a lot of memorable stops into this tour,” says Taylor. “The Columbia III,” she says, “brought medical aid and religion to the people of these islands until the late 1950s. It’s like a homecoming to pull in at old docks at places like Surge Narrows on Read Island on this boat.” Tour participants will get a taste of the present too, with stops at small communities like Refuge

Cove, at the mouth of Desolation Sound, that have weathered isolation and economic change. And they’ll visit a contemporary homestead on Sonora Island, where the Columbia III’s crew live. This tour is restricted to ten guests aboard the 68-foot boat, at an all-inclusive price of $1,795 per person, which includes gourmet fare that gets rave reviews. “Friesen’s the reason” Storm take 3-1 lead J.R. RARDON CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Reeling from their first loss in the 2015 VIJHL playoffs and trailing Comox Valley 3-0 late in the second period in their own arena Saturday night, the Campbell River Storm needed a spark. What they got was a conflagration. Veteran winger Josiah Friesen scored a natural hat trick as the Storm fought back to tie the contest, then lifted the game-winner into the top corner of the net early in the second overtime as Campbell River claimed a 4-3 win over the Glacier Kings and took a commanding 3-1 lead in the teams’ best-of-7 North Division finals series. The Storm can close out the series with a win tonight at Rod Brind’Amour Arena. “Friesen’s the reason,” Storm head coach Lee Stone said. “I think the coolest thing is, his mom and dad are up here right now. You can’t script it any better.” Friesen, a 20-year-old from Surrey in his final year of eligibility, did not win the game alone. But he did play a major role in kick-starting a moribund Storm club that had managed just one goal in its previous five periods, was coming off a 2-1 loss in Game 3 one night earlier, and was being outshot 16-11 nearly 35 minutes into Wednesday’s game. He did it by barrelling off the wing following a faceoff in the Comox zone and crashing the net hard in what has become something of a trademark move in these playoffs. That charge resulted in an ice-breaking goal that not only put the hosts on the scoreboard at 13:44 of the

second period, but restored the mojo the team had used to run away with the best record in the North in the regular season. The Storm went on to outshoot the visitors 42-29 and dominated all but brief stretches of the third period and overtime. “After the first period our captains went in the (locker) room and tried to settle everybody down,” Friesen said. “It was, ‘Look, we’re not playing good. We gotta step it up; we gotta turn things around.’ I figured I couldn’t ask that of my teammates if I

couldn’t do it myself.” Reece Costain and Kobe Oishi got assists on the goal, and the pair also assisted when Friesen drew the Storm to 3-2 with a one-timer from the high slot at 18:42 of the second. Then, just 37 seconds into the third period, with the Storm skating in the waning seconds of a power play, Friesen backhanded the rebound of Will McNamara’s point shot past Glacier Kings’ netminder Zachary Straza. Costain added his third assist on the play. The score remained 3-3

through regulation and a 10-minute overtime. Following a flood of the ice, the teams returned for a 20-minute, sudden-death overtime. But it didn’t take nearly that long. Just 1:16 into the period, with the Storm controlling the puck in the Glacier Kings’ zone, Oishi appeared to score on a shot that lifted the crowd and Storm bench to its feet while firing up the arena foghorn. But the referee waived off the goal immediately. “I thought it went in, everyone on the ice thought it went in, and everyone in the

stands thought it went in,” said Stone. “But I kinda said on the bench, ‘Guys, it doesn’t matter. We’ll score two, we’ll score three, it we have to.’ At that point I think we were all really confident.” On the ensuing faceoff to Straza’s right, the Storm won the draw and worked the puck behind the net. When it was knocked toward the point, Campbell River defenseman Trevor Bottomley took possession and dropped a quick pass to Friesen at the bottom of the right circle. From a steep angle, he lifted the puck over Straza’s right

shoulder and inside the near post at 1:41 of the fifth period to spark the real celebration. “Botts made a great play and I just wanted to throw it on net,” said Friesen. “I wanted short-side shelf. (Straza) was cheating back door, so I actually had quite a bit of room over the shoulder.” The Glacier Kings took a 1-0 lead on Derian Hamilton’s power-play goal at 18:01 of the first period. Colton St. John made it 2-0 at 5:33 of the second, beating Storm goalie Jesse Michel with a tap-in at the right post. Midway through the second, a long line drive from beyond the blue line floated over Michel’s glove and into the back of the net. That apparent score was nullified because the Glacier Kings were offside, but Michel was replaced by Riley Welyk, who has carried the bulk of the team’s workload between the pipes for the past two months after Michel suffered a lowerbody injury. The switch did not pay immediate dividends, however, as Comox maintained momentum. Welyk was left on his own for a breakaway by the Glacier Kings’ Grant Iles, who roofed the puck to make it 3-0 at 13:36 of the second. “After Riley let in that third one, I went back and I told him, ‘We’re coming back,’” Friesen said. “‘You shut the door from here on out; we’re coming back.’” And he was as good as his word. Puck drops on Game 5 tonight at 7:30 p.m. Should Comox Valley extend the series, Game 6 would be played in Comox Saturday night. A Game 7, if necessary, would be back in Campbell River Sunday.

The club sent all of its boys and its level 8 girls to the competition and returned with three allaround gold medals and two more all-around podium finishes. Michael swept the rings, vault, parallel bars, high bar, pommel horse and floor exercise and added the all-around for a haul of seven gold medals in the boys level 3 division. For the Junior Olympic Level 8 girls, both Brooklyn Batch and Reese Wheeldon claimed all-around gold. Wheeldon won in the 2001-02 age group, while Batch

Riptide U15 boys repeat Island title It was a case of dejà vu all over again when the Upper Island U-15 Boys faced Saanich/Fusion for the Island A Cup Championship at the Comox Sports Centre turf this month. For the second straight year, the two teams squared off for the Island title and provincial berth, and for the second time, the game went to penalty kicks before the Riptide prevailed, 1-0, to retain its crown. “What a performance! The boys played some fantastic soccer,” head coach Bruce Mitchell said. “A special heartfelt thanks to our back line of John (Samuels), Shohei (Iwamoto), Brook (Gronmeyer), Dawson (Kipp) and Dylan (Robertson). They were up

against some truly great soccer players and they totally dominated. “One mistake could have cost either team but both teams played with incredible intensity and desire. Our back line held firm and not a single mistake was made.” G o a l ke e p e r Jare d Perras got the shutout, prevailing through seven rounds of penalty kicks before the Riptide clinched the win when a Saanich shot caromed off the crossbar and out. The defending A Cup Provincial Champions will get a chance to repeat during the July 9-12 tourney in Surrey. Meanwhile, the team will have a break before beginning Coastal A Cup Championships play in late April.

Lifter hoists gold Campbell River’s Kaiya MacNeill-Payeur has been competing in powerlifting for less than a year. But that’s been more than enough time to earn the local gym owner a berth in the Canadian Powerlifting Union’s National Championships next month in Newfoundland. The owner of the Crossfit O’Twelve gym, who competes as Kaiya McPay, swept the squat, the bench press and the deadlift in last month’s Winter Open Powerlifting competition to claim the gold medal and earn a berth in the April 6-11 nationals in St. John’s. “I am so honoured to be able to bring something to Campbell River that not only helps RCMP, football players, powerlifters, wrestlers

and hockey players, but can also benefit a stayat-home mom or someone who is just looking to improve their general health,” said McPay. She has trained at both her own gym and at Titanium Crossfit in Courtenay, under coach Marc Mazzocchi, since opening Crossfit O’Twelve in 2012. More recently, she began focussing on powerlifting and Olympic lifting and entered her first competition last spring. At the Richmond competition, which drew 79 lifters from across B.C., McPay matched the top squat in the women’s open/84 kg class with a lift of 120 kg. She followed with a 90-kg bench press and a 155kg deadlift, both best in the class, to clinch her

gold with a total weight of 365 kg. It is her second straight gold medal, following her win in the 2014 BC Powerlifters’ Association Fall Classic in Abbotsford, and improves on her overall weight total of 325 from that competition. In all, she has won four powerlifting gold medals, including in her debut at the 2014 Spring Open in Langley, in the 84+ weight class. Since winning at Richmond, McPay has been back in her Willow Point gym to resume training while also raising funds for her nationals trip. To support McPay’s efforts, you may contact her at Crossfit O’Twelve or via her Facebook page: Kaiya McPay Powerlifter.

MANAGING YOUR MONEY Financial literacy for4x10 seniors – it’s important Sonia Edwards MBA

Financial literacy is a critical life skill for everybody and especially for older Canadians who may face new and varied financial challenges as they navigate their senior years. Without sufficient financial literacy skills, seniors could be vulnerable to problems ranging from difficulties in managing their finances to falling victim to fraud and other forms of financial abuse. That’s why the federal Financial Consumer Agency of Canada recently released a report, “National Strategy For Financial Literacy, Phase 1: Strengthening Seniors’ Financial Literacy*. The report is the result of a broad consultation process involving individual Canadians and a wide range of public, private and nonprofit sector organizations. With the input and direction of these stakeholders, the report focuses on four goals as key priorities for strengthening seniors’ financial literacy: • Engage more Canadians in preparing for their future years as a senior. • Help current seniors plan and manage their financial affairs.

• Improve understanding of and access to public benefits for seniors. • Increase tools to combat inancial abuse of seniors. The report says the needs for financial education and support vary widely among the seniors’ population. It also points out that research is important in developing effective programs to help seniors take the right actions and make sound decisions necessary to achieve their financial goals. Early planning and timely decisions have a major impact on seniors’ financial well-being, a reality the report addresses by noting that seniors need a broad base of support to ensure they can make confident and informed decisions on financial matters.

translate into positive financial behaviours and outcomes. • Preventing financial abuse can only partially be addressed through greater financial literacy. • Much good work in the field of financial education is already happening across the country through the efforts of organizations in the private, public and nonprofit sectors.

Investors Group

The report also emphasizes that: • Financial literacy is a significant, complex issue with many challenges. • People require the right initiatives, tool and supports to take charge of their financial situation. • It can be challenging for anyone to keep their financial knowledge and skills up to date. • Financial education has its limits. It does not always

Improving seniors’ financial literacy is critical – but, as the report says, it’s not enough. Seniors (and those who will one day be seniors) also need expert support, direction and advice they can trust – and that makes a professional advisor a critical member of their financial team. *http://www.fcac-acfc. gc.ca/Eng/financialLiteracy/ financialLiteracyCanada/strategy/ Documents/seniors_financial_ literacy_consultation.pdf This column, written and published by Investors Group Financial Services Inc. Fishing Corner

Your Adventure Awaits! with

had great success when the bite is on and those after the lunkers had 4 and 5-pound trout break off while other days have been slow. Reginald Lake is catch and release only on the fly and this lake has a great fish population for those out fishing on the fly.

Local anglers who go after steelhead in March and April are in for a great fight if you can find the right drift in our local rivers.

Reading about steel heading and doing it is two different things. Some of the older retired rods say that steel heading is not what it used to be. I meet regularly with Graham Kelly who gets out and lands a fish and he keeps his spots on any given river a secret.

Don Daniels

Keeta Lake a few minutes north of Sayward was last stocked in 2007 and is fishable from shore. This may be a great spot to cast out a fly and reports are that fish around 12 inches are common.

Graham Kelly with a catch and release Steelhead

Most fish are caught drifting lures or artificial worms or even a fly. For most guides who fish the area go to the Gold and Campbell River and the Salmon River can be a great spot when fish are hooked. A 29-pound Steelhead on the Salmon is a big catch but 21 or a 25-pound fish will be a catch to be proud of. The Vancouver Island fish hatchery on Wednesday stocked Echo Lake near Campbell River with over 600 catchable trout and while fishing

from shore can be fun it may take a few days to let the fish settle in. Last week I found that a small dry fly tied on a number 14 hook was getting action. I still think that deer hair is a popular material to play with and a Tom Thumb fly even on a bigger size will catch fish all year.

I received reader feedback on the lure I found in a tackle box that was made at the Last Resort Tackle Company in Edmonton. The Flattened penny with the Lords prayer engraved on it was made in 1987 and to my knowledge the company no longer exists.

Early season fishing action has been slow on Echo and Beavertail but the shoreline can be buzzing with surface fish hanging around the weed bed. I found that from dawn to 11 am is the best time to fish and the late hours before sunset can be good.

SPROUT, RON

January 7, 1933 – January 22, 2015 Ron Sprout, of Sayward BC, passed away peacefully at his family’s home on January 22, 2015. Ron and Frances (Bebe) moved to the Sayward Valley in 1956. Ron from the very start fell in love with Sayward and did not want to live anywhere else. His community spirit was evident in everything he did from Mayor, working with the Fish and Game Club, volunteering for the May Day celebrations, helping put on Talent Night, being Santa for many years going around the village of Sayward getting the kids excited, growing pumpkins along his road and then giving them to the neighbours kids. The one thing he loved more than anything else though was Oscar Daze. He was a coach, umpire and an ambassador for the local ball tournament. He would spend hours walking around the ball park talking to the people who came. He made his last appearance at Oscar Daze this past summer where the local residents honoured him for his contributions over the years. Ron is survived by his wife Bebe, daughters Shelley (Kerry) and Tracey (Lorne) his son Peter (Karen). He had 5 grandchildren Christopher, Nicole, Jennifer, Stephanie and Matthew, 3 greatgrandchildren Mattea, Chayce and Linden. The family would like to give a special thanks to his granddaughter Stephanie for making it possible to bring dad home where he could be with his family at the end. There will be a celebration of life for Ron at the Eagles Hall in Campbell River on March 28th, 2015 from 1 to 4 pm.

Barbara Lynne Horton (Guderjan) October 23, 1955 - February 20, 2015 Born in Nanaimo, moved with family to Kelsey Bay, then Campbell River for high school. After marriage moved to Prince George - passed away peacefully in Surrey Memorial Hospital after a short and fierce battle with an aggressive cancer. She is survived by sons Matt (Kayla and Seth) and their mother Sara, Tyler (Amy d.), Caleb, Sophie and Sammy, David (Janine), Tony, Shayla, Tyler and Cooper. Her siblings Cindy Parsons of Nanaimo, Doug (Brenda) Guderjan and Kevin Guderjan. Her mom Patricia Scott (Ken), her dad Wally Guderjan, all of Campbell River as well as numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends and co-workers from Fortis Gas, already missing her. An amazing girl, beloved big "sis," not afraid to try new things such as swimming across McIvor Lake with her sister, white water rafting and joining a Toastmasters club. She loved fried oysters, eating chocolate, purple irises, her nine grandchildren, swimming, travel, paddling a canoe, summers at Camp Homewood, a day at the beach with siblings, jewellery; especially if it was a bargain, and reading mysteries. However, she disliked most orange and green veggies, washing dishes, and a real biggie to her was missing sleep. She was comfortable singing in any venue and enjoyed being part of a worship team, very much relaxed in a leadership role but most of all, she loved being a mom and grandma. We will miss forever her quirky humour and laughter. She left us too soon. We were not done with her. "Sunday's child is fair of face" A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015 from 1-3pm at the Discovery Community Church, 250-10th Avenue, Campbell River. Please come with your "Barb memories" and be ready to eat chocolate. For more information call Pat Scott at 250-923-2284.

Elio Piccin born February 12,1929 passed away peacefully Sunday March 8, 2015. My Dad was born in Vittorio-Veneto, Italy. He lost his mother at the age of three. He started working for his father at the age of nine in the woods, cutting trees for firewood. At the age of 18 my Dad joined the Partigianni and was very proud to be an Alpino and to fight with them to defeat the fascist in the mountains of northern Italy. After the war my father returned to the mountain town of Cargnacco to help build a monument in honour of those that died in World War Two. He came to Canada at the age of 25, and found employment in the mines in Wells BC, near Barkerville. My father wrote to his cousin in Italy and she suggested that he correspond with a girl name Alba. After a short courtship via mail, he asked Alba to marry him. She said yes and Dad went to Italy to meet and marry my mom. Mom came back to Wells and a short time later, I, Cristina was born. Mom left Dad to return to Italy as the environment was to lonely and rustic for her. My Dad had opportunity to come to the Island and lived in Campbell River for the remainder of his life, continuing to work at Westmin Mines, until his retirement in 1994. Dad enjoyed his retirement with his friend Rose, whom encouraged him to join the Elks, where many happy memories were made, enjoying good friends and good beer. My Dad was also a proud member of the Campbell River Italian Cultural Society, and seldom missed a meeting, as the fellowship, food, and opportunity to speak Italian was much enjoyed. Elio's family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to New Horizons staff for the wonderful care he received during his stay. Also, special thanks to close friends, that unfailingly came to visit. Friends are invited to join Cristina, to remember Elio, at the home of Dan and Robbin at 4660 Discovery Drive on Friday March 13th at 2pm.
