College of the Rockies Health Programs News! Bachelor of Science in Nursing Students Receive Bursaries
Five College of the Rockies’ Nursing students received bursaries from the Registered Nurses Foundation of BC (RNFBC). The RNFBC is committed to supporting nursing education and has provided bursaries for nursing students for 33 years. Congratulations to the winners: Kara Butz, Katy Deely, Jordana McGregor, Gurina Sandhu and Brianna Willet.
College’s Health Care Assistant Program Recognized
College of the Rockies’ Health Care Assistant (HCA) program has been granted a full, fiveyear recognition status by the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry. This recognition status applies to the HCA program offered at all of the College’s campus locations. The BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry reviews and recognizes HCA programs in BC to ensure that they are: following the provincial curriculum, implementing a common set of training standards and graduating competent front-line health care providers. The College’s program meets or exceeds all of these criteria.
This recognition is important for HCA programs as it is integral to the Registry’s mandate of patient protection and improved standards of care. It also means that graduates of the six-month College of the Rockies’ Health Care Assistant program are eligible for registration with the Registry – mandatory for employment with the Health Authorities.
College Hosts Nursing Conference
College of the Rockies’ Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program recently hosted the Western and North Western Region Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing annual conference at the St. Eugene Mission Resort. Over 80 undergraduate nurse educators from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Alberta and British Columbia shared research on innovations in nursing aimed at responding to the Canadian health care system’s needs. The keynote speaker was Dr. Noreen Frisch, Professor and Director of the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria. Dr. Frisch is the academic leader of InspireNet, a virtual network in BC that brings over 3,500 clinicians, students, researchers and policy makers together for knowledge exchange.

“The conference brought nursing scholars with current research to the East Kootenay region and was an excellent way to showcase the College and our community,” says College of the Rockies Acting Dean of Instruction Heather Hepworth. During the event, nursing students from the College organized a wellness drive, working with public health nurses, local agencies like Street Angel and Ktunaxa community members to determine supplies that would be of most benefit to the Ktunaxa community at this time.

Destruction of traps results in cancellation of city deer cull
Photo submitted
Destruction of city traps means that the urban deer cull is on hold for the time being. by Trevor Crawley Cranbrook Daily Townsman The deer cull is on hold indefinitely in Cranbrook after four provincially-owned clover traps were vandalized overnight on March 5th. Around 5:30 a.m. on the morning of Friday, March 6th, city contractors making their early morning rounds discovered the four traps had the netting slashed making them unusable. All of the traps were located on private property. The RCMP was immediately notified and an investigation is underway. “I’m very disappointed,” said Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt. “I think the people responsible for it don’t know the facts around the deer cull, so it’s disappointing that they’re acting on improper information. “We’re go-
ing to halt the cull now, of course, but we’re going to go ahead and try to get permit—hopefully for two years—and we’re going to continue to work with the other communities that we’ve partnered up with, and the province, to look into the relocation idea.”Either way, we feel strongly for safety reasons, if none other, that the deer have to be gone out of town.” Pratt says the RCMP is investigating the vandalized traps and that the matter can result in criminal and civil charges. “In talking to the RCMP, we are going to pursue finding the culprits and there will be probably two means of prosecution—one would be through the RCMP and whatever charges they come up with and there’s probably going to be a civil suit for damages,” Pratt said.
The deer cull program began on Sunday, February 22, 2015 with the setup and baiting of traps and concluded overnight Thursday, March 5, 2015, with a total of 4 mule deer— one adult buck and three adult does—being captured and euthanized over an approximate 11 day trapping period. All of the mule deer were processed and the meat distributed to three local organizations to be used for human consumption. This process was clearly identified in the guidelines embedded in the Wildlife Permit provided by MFLNRO. All meat preparation was conducted by a qualified local butcher and processed in a facility inspected and approved by both Interior Health and MFLNRO. Although there was provision in the Wildlife Permit to capture and euthanize both mule deer and incidental white-tail deer, the contractor was instructed by the City and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO) to release any captured white-tail deer, if it was deemed safe to do so, forboth the deer and the contractor. Two white-tail deer, one buck and one doe were captured during the program. Both were released by the contractors unharmed. The Wildlife Permit was issued to the City of Cranbrook on Oc-
tober 7, 2014 by the MFLNRO, was valid from December 1, 2014 and expires on March 15, 2015. The specific zones of the City to be targeted for the population reduction program were approved by resolution of Council. That recommendation was based on complaints received by City staff from the public in 2014 along with the results of the urban deer population count conducted in December 2014. The locations of the traps were determined by City staff based on this information along with complaints received by the provincial toll-free Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line and priority areas identified by the Conservation Officer Service in 2014. The cull results indicate to staff that the clover traps were placed in the best strategic locations possible to minimize the chances of capturing white-tail deer. Two individuals/ companies, who had previously approached the City of Cranbrook interested in conducting the cull program, were invited to submit a quote for service in February. The contract was awarded by resolution of Council with the approved budget of $12,750. The program will be well below budget. Staff is waiting on the final invoice from the contractor. Senior’s advocate strikes a chord
B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher B.C.’s new seniors’ advocate has issued her second report, and the media mostly ignored it. When this new office was promised by a campaigning Premier Christy Clark two years ago, I suggested that B.C. already has 85 seniors’ advocates. They’re called MLAs, and inquiries go to their local offices. Much to the chagrin of the opposition, Seniors’ Advocate Isobel Mackenzie’s mandate is not to pursue individual cases, and so she won’t be serving up a fresh assortment of horror stories to embarrass the government. Instead, it is to look for “systemic challenges” and recommend ways to deal with them. The latest report is based on a survey of more than 500 seniors from around the province, and the key finding was not what she expected. “We were surprised to learn of the lack of awareness among seniors, particularly lowincome seniors, of government programs and the subsidies available to assist them,” Mackenzie said. The survey found that 60 per cent of seniors living on $30,000 or less annual income didn’t know they are

eligible for discounts on Medical Services Plan premiums. For income less than $22,000, the entire $864 cost of individual MSP premiums is waived. Other frequently overlooked programs are a monthly rent subsidy called Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER), grants for disability modifications called Home Adaptations for Independence, drug cost assistance called Fair Pharmacare, property tax deferment and the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement program. Those older than 75 with income of less than $30,000 reported the lowest awareness of assistance designed specifically for them. But you don’t get these benefits unless you apply and show that your income qualifies. The survey also found that the biggest fear of low-income seniors is that they won’t be able to afford to stay in their homes. See home adaptation, property tax and rent subsidy programs above. Awareness and usage of the SAFER program was lowest in the north and highest in urban areas, perhaps not surprising since the B.C. government exists more in theory than in fact in many remote places. So what should the government do about this? Well, it could advertise these programs. The government does lots of advertising, but not about old news like the SAFER program, which dates back to the 1970s.
Tamara L’Hoost
Clark’s government did a whack of advertising in the election year, 2013. Much of it was about the B.C. Jobs Plan, heavy on the hardhats and blueprint-style graphics and arc welding and stuff like that. Then last year the government’s big ad campaign was around the teachers’ strike, and the payments to parents to help with child care while teachers demanded twice as big a raise as all the other unions. Education Minister Peter Fassbender is still bragging about the response rate for $40-aday parental strike pay, which was snapped up by almost 100 per cent of eligible parents. This demonstrates that the government can indeed give away money with great efficiency, just by telling people how to get it. The NDP’s version of seniors’ advocacy is to find the most tragic problems from complaints coming into constituency offices, and use those to ambush the government. A popular choice is an elderly couple who have to be separated because their medical needs are too different to keep them in the same facility. TV news loves that one. People cry on camera and denounce politicians for being heartless, as if the health minister stayed up late plotting how to break their granny’s heart. Maybe this seniors’ advocate wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

I am against the deer cull as many of you already know. All of us must search our heart, soul, conscience on this. I truly hope more of you out there will stand up and help to save the deer. Take the time to keep calling your city hall, your MP, MLA, Minister of Forests, Premier’s office. Now I have something more to say. Let’s pretend you’re that trapped deer. You are tricked into entering by smell of bait, merrily you go in. Suddenly there’s a loud noise, you can’t get out. It collapses and you’re pinned in it to the ground already stressed. Panicking. Bleating noises are normal “Help help!” Maybe you’re there for 4, 10, 12 hours.
No freedom to be free. Terrified. Finally some men in a truck show up. You’re pounced on and held down more. Who cares if you can’t breath from this extra weight on you. Some ribs break and you’re shot by a stun gun or bolt. Your brains start oozing out. You’re still alive for a bit yet. Meanwhile your legs also got broken to make extra sure you do not escape. Then you’re dragged over to the truck head lower or hanging. Throat also slit so you’ll bleed out. Eventually gutted too. Used to eat. Humane! No. Did you like being that deer? Before all this you silently grazed here or there. Caused no trouble and went your way. Now I want to ask
where is the SPCA on all this? You have the legislation and mandate and oath to protect animals including wildlife from being abused or neglected tortured and so on. Hazing was very successful in Waterton and other places. In the old days some dogs roamed more freely in towns. They chased bears, deer, elk, moose away. There are alternatives. Murdering is not the answer. Like I said there’s not much left out there despite your so called collected numbers of... About 53 per cent of the world’s species are gone now. Driven to extinction by pollution, disease, poaching, over hunting, encroachment of humankind, improper management, greed, profit margins. I was taught by my father to respect the deer,
bear, etc. as I grew up by the forest. Often played there too. He taught me to respect them. Not to get too close. Let them be. They will let you be too. All the years he prospected, climbed mountains was out there not once did he get attacked. He had no rifle. If you’re too close the deer will let you know. It’s fur will stand up bristly, Ears will stiffen. It could lower its head briefly and paw at the ground with its hoof. Are we to go to the point of ‘And then there were none?’ All of life on this planet is important. Ecosystems, symbiotic relationships, diversity. For the deer, ~ Rhonda (Jackson) Brass.

10 Neat Things by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet
Spring chores are exciting #1
1. Spring is around the corner and there is a lot of work that must be done. As the frost recedes, more and more projects can get underway. Early spring is really important to get your chores in. A lot of motivation can be found when stretching your muscles and breaking free of the winter’s grasp. There is never a better time, where energy and excitement can be found so easily. 2.Have a look at your garden tools. This is a good time to get some of the handles fixed, blades sharpened, or replaced. Sharpen the blades on your pruners, shears or loppers. An early spring tune up can save you time and energy when you need to accomplish your tasks. 3. Spraying Dormant Oil on any tree or shrub that is prone to insect or diseases is one way to get ahead. Dormant Oil cleanses the tree of overwintering eggs or fungus. Cleaning up all the leaves around the plant also is key to stopping the cycle of problems. 4. Compost. Compost. Compost. Setting up a compost site helps you build up soil instead of always looking for more. Having a place to pile leaves, lawn clippings, or garden waste allows you to actively gain rich soil that can be used anywhere including the garden or lawn. 5. Everyone makes mistakes. This is one of the best times to transplant existing trees and shrubs. If you didn’t quite get the tree in the right spot or a shrub doesn’t seem to be thriving in it’s current spot, then now is the time to try again. Try to capture as large of root ball as possible when transplanting. 6. Pruning is vital part of good plant care. Old bushes should be refreshed by removing ⅓ of the old growth. It seems like a lot, but this allows space for the new growth to thrive. 7. Rake, thatch, and aerate. After cleaning up the winter’s debris by raking, look for compacted spots. High traffic areas should aerated to combat compaction. If there are dense grass spots that look like giant mats, a thatcher will solve this problem quickly and easily. These steps to will provide the ideal environment for your lawn to start green. 8. Fertilizer. Feeding your plants in early spring allows them to wake up with food at the tips of their roots. Fertilizing the lawn is the most common step, but also have a look at giving those shrubs, trees, and perennials a boost. Most of the growth for a lot of plants is done in late spring so fertilizing later won’t be as effective as at the start of the year. If you have a lot of different types of plants, a treatment of 16-16-16 can be the universal fertilizer you need to help everything. 9. Edge the sidewalks. Forget where that sidewalk begins and the lawn ends? Lawn will slowly creep on top of pavers, sidewalks, and driveways every year. This chore is easy to forget. If you start questioning, “I thought this walkway was bigger”, find an edger and make a clean line to start the season. 10. Have fun. This is one of the most exciting times of the year, when work seems more like play. Shoveling, raking, cutting and cleaning up doesn’t usually get people excited, but at this time of year we are just happy to be outside. Till next time...happy chores.

Aerials, Moguls, Dual Moguls, Slopestyle and Halfpipe are up first on the event schedule, with Ski Cross races closing out the championships on April 1. “The Junior World Championships are a great opportunity for us to see how the Canadian developmental program is on track against international competition,” explained Willy Raine, Athletic Director of Canadian Ski Cross team. Many competitors who have raced the World Cup circuit this season will be in the mix for the title of Junior World Champion. Raine is confident in Canada’s chance of being on top of the podium. Attending are: Women: • India Sherret – Cranbrook – Canadian Development Team (formerly Kimberley Alpine Team) • Abby McEwen – Edmonton – Alberta Ski Cross
• Alexa Velcic – Calgary – Alberta Ski Cross • Zoe Chore – Cranbrook – Alberta Ski Cross and Kimberley Alpine Team (KAT) Men: • Ned Ireland - Lake Country, BC -Canadian Development Team • Matt Brady -Burlinglon, ON - Canadian Development Team • Kris Mahler -Canmore AB - Canadian Development Team • Adam Gibson Whistler, BC Ski Cross is increasing in popularity due to the success of Canada at the Olympics and the opportunity young athletes have to try ski cross at entry level events. These events have proved to be so successful by both attendance and the enthusiasm of the young athletes. Veteran India Sherret has made a name for herself on the Ski Cross circuit. With two World Juniors under her belt she is says, “Represent-

It is a chance to push myself in a very competitive environment that we don’t often get in North America, by competing it is a chance to see how I rank up against the next generation of world class athletes. This year I am hoping to be able to put together a podium worthy performance, I believe that it is well within my ability as long as I stay

focussed on each run at a time. This race is also an amazing cultural experience that many people may never get to have, we get to explore beautiful countries and make friends and meet people from all over the world. I consider myself very lucky to be part of such experiences. Newbie, Zoe Chore is in her first year of ski cross. She is still racing with Kimberley Alpine Team (KAT) and this year started with Alberta Ski Cross. She is very excited and says, “The World Juniors is important as it will open my eyes to the competition and what I need to do if I want to win. It will be my first ski trip outside North America and I hope it will help inspire other KAT athletes to show them their dreams can come true and hard work really does pay off. Coach Sead Causevic has trained the development team this year and Jorgen Krause has trained the Alberta Ski Cross Coach team. Jon Blair, Program Director at Kimberley Alpine Team (KAT) has coached both India Sherrett and Zoe Chore. He has seen how both athletes have worked very hard to get where they are. He would like to thank the skiers at Kimberley who have donated money to help support India and Zoe. He is proud to see how the Kimberley ski community supports athletes at all stages of their training. The team members Zoe Chore and India Sherret will be raising money locally to attend. Please support them on their quest for gold! There is a bottle drive for people to donate to. For bottle pick up contact india.s.ski@gmail. com. You can also purchase Steam Donkey Coffee by Zoe and India. Just email jane87@ telus.net for information.

Slugs: To all those people who don’t recycle. Several times I have gone to the local dumps & sorted my papers, cans & glass into the recycle bins as you drive into the dump. You can’t miss them and so many times when I am throwing my actual garbage out, there is so many people throwing out recyclables into the garbage. Hugs: A big hug for Steve Norton, coach of the Cranbrook/ Kimberley Special Olympic skiers, for all the time spent teaching these athletes to ski. Also, hugs to his helpers Joanne, Catherine, Bruce, Larry and Ray. The athletes are lucky to have these people volunteer so much time for them. Slugs: To the Security Person/ Persons at the Feb. 20th Ice Game (Pink the Rink Nite) that discouraged fans from cheering on the Ice team by saying they were being too loud. Noise is part of the atmosphere at hockey games. Maybe it was the extra one thousand or so fans that we are trying to encourage to attend games that made the difference. GO ICE GO. Hugs: To Dr. Kilfoil, The Green Home, EK Caregivers Network for the loving care you gave my husband Darel Elmore.

The Nissan LEAF miraculously cut a journey in half this week. I’ll explain. I took the plug-in sedan on a 43-kilometre trip from Vancouver to Driveway HQ, on 152nd Street, in Surrey. When I set out, the screen display showed that I could drive emission-free for 146 kilometres. Now I could have taken off like an F1 supercar and street raced all the way, because electric power offers instant tire squealing torque if you press the pedal to the metal. But that’s not me. Spurred by my ecofriendly driving the previous day, the clever car had decided earlier in the day that I could do 156 kilometres on a full charge. Not boasting but that’s easily more than 20 kilometres better than the average driver can expect to achieve. Okay, maybe my head
is swelling. The big 1-4-6 winked at me. I threw the stick into ECO mode and with two flicks of the wrist pushed it into the enhanced B-mode, which puts the braking power regeneration into overdrive, so to speak. I glided silently down the road, picking up pace ever so gradually in the busy city traffic. Rolling down the hills to Marpole, I could feel the juice from the brakes topping up that battery. On the freeway, I hit the posted speed limit and 40 minutes later pulled into HQ. The display flashed 126. I had covered 43 klicks with the power required to move the car just 20! Such fun. Honda is in Accord with Canadian likes By Bob McHugh The very first Honda Accord, introduced to Canadians back in 1976, was about the same size as today’s Civic sedan and it had a less powerful engine. When the eighth generation Accord was introduced in 2008, it was officially classified as a “large car” and came with a 190-horsepower 4-cylinder engine, or an even more powerful optional V6. Eight-gen Accord did get a
mild mid-life facelift for the 2011 model year and it included new front-end styling and some interior improvements. A new base SE trim line also replaced the previous LX trim. The four-cylinder is by far the most popular engine choice of Canadians, but there was also an interesting upgrade to the optional 3.5-litre V6 in 2011. Called Variable Cylinder Management (in Sedan editions only - not Accord Coupe), this system can improve fuel econ-

No changes were made to Accord for the 2012 model year. The big changes came in 2013 when a landmark, smaller and lighter, all-new ninth generation
Honda Accord was released. Although lighter, the 2013 Accord is structurally stronger than the previous generation Accord and although its outer dimensions are more compact and it has a shorter wheelbase, it has more rear seat legroom and a slightly larger trunk, according to Honda. Major changes also happened
under-hood with the release of Honda’s new “Earth Dreams” engine technology. This could also be linked to a high-efficiency new CVT automatic with “G-Design Shift Logic”. This feature provides quicker acceleration, as it’s faster acting than a conventional automatic transmission. In addition to being consid-

erably more fuel efficient the 2.4 litre four-cylinder “Earth Dreams” editions of Accord are also super-clean running and complies with PZEV (partial zero emission vehicle) requirements in the US. This engine also supplies more power at low engine speeds, just where you need it, on take-off, on a hill or when merging into freeway traffic. Its city/highway fuel economy ratings of 9.1/6.6 L/100 km, with the CVT, are outstanding for a family-size sedan. A 6-manual was available with the base LX and Sport trim levels and a conventional 6-automatic came with the V6 engine editions. In addition to four-door sedan and two-door coupe models of Accord, there’s also a five-door hatchback/cross-over version called Crosstour, which was originally called Accord Crosstour when introduced in 2010. A new plug-in hybrid (sedan) version, called Accord PHEV, was also introduced in 2014. It’s powered by a new twomotor hybrid system that operates continuously through three modes; all-electric, gasolineelectric or direct-drive. Accord sedan has consistently been a top performer in crash tests performed by both the IIHS and the NHTSA in the US. It’s

tation to try newer and better technology. But not all technological ‘fixes,’ well, fix. It’s an all-too common experience for many small businesses, which is why KRIC has decided to postpone its Technology Integration workshops to March

30th and 31st, to allow a greater number of businesses to attend. Kevin Shepit, Project Manager for KRIC said, “These are going to be really valuable for our region’s small business community and we wanted to make sure as many people as possible knew about the opportunity.” The workshops will be delivered by GO Productivity’s Mike Kluh in Golden on Monday, March 30th and in Cranbrook on Tuesday, March 31st. Kluh, whose training in Lean principles colour his perspective on using technology in a small business, said, “There are many options to improvement, but it’s not a matter of just adding in new technology without strategizing first.” What sort of technologies might small businesses want to consider? Those that deal in information, data and communications for a start, and including cloud networks and customer relationship management systems. Workshop participants will learn to think about productivity not just as efficiency, but also as resourcefulness. Perhaps you’ve tried to incorporate upgrades to some of the technology you use in your small business. Perhaps you’ve failed to realize the benefits you were expecting. Don’t despair. Kluh can help you unpack what happened, and what you can do next time. “Executing bad processes faster is not a way to increase productivity,” he said. “Often, though, small business owners are enticed by the latest-and-greatest gadgets and services, and they neglect the strategic, resourceful thinking.” The workshop will introduce a step-by-step process for successful implementation of technology in your business. It will also cover some change-management strategies to use with your staff. The $40 registration fee includes snacks and refreshments as well as all workshop materials. For more details or to register, visit www. kric.ca or email kevin. shepit@kric.ca. This workshop is made possible thanks to KRIC’s Premier Sponsor, Community Futures East Kootenay, along with Fortis BC, Teck, the City of Kimberley, the Columbia Basin Trust and the Elk Valley Economic Initiative.

A judge congratulating a budding scientist at a previous East Kootenay Regional Science Fair. Advertiser Staff Science is an everevolving discipline that has taken us as a society from shivering in a cave to exploring Mars. With the pace of technology today, the scientists of the future need to start young and with the East Kootenay Regional Science Fair, slated for April 10 and 11 at the College of the Rockies, local students are getting that head start. “Our head judge, Dr. David Dick, from the college has rounded up 45 science professionals from around the area to judge the exhibits,” said Ann Rice, science fair coordinator. “It’s a real networking community for these people.” Rice explained that on the Friday, the event will be a competition for grades 6 through 12. On Saturday, it will be a non-competitive show for the grades K through 5. “It’s also a science exhibition,” said Rice. “Organizations and businesses will be on hand with displays. These exhibitions will line the hallways and foyer of the College. This science fair has a history of its student participants achieving acclaim. A few years ago Keltie Murdoch ended up going to the national competition for her experiment that recaptured geothermal heating. She then went on to compete in the Taiwan International Science Fair, earning fourth place honours. Something special for this year’s event is that people can see and hear Abigail Harrison, known as ‘Astronaut
Abby’, who has devoted nearly her entire 17 years to becoming one of the first astronauts on Mars. Check out Astronautabby.com for her full story. So this coming April 10 and 11, come down to the College of the Rockies and see the science of tomorrow during the East Kootenay Regional Science Fair.
Examinations will be scheduled on specified days in April. All interested parties must be examined by a dentist prior to receiving treatment. Subsequent appointments will be scheduled in May. These appointments will be booked after the examination appointment. Fee: $15/per person to a maximum of $45/per family. There will be an additional fee for scaling. Mary Dekker (nee Stone) 1930 - 2015 Mary was born on August 22, 1930 in Creston BC, on the Reserve, which was referred to as the Flats. She passed away peacefully at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook on Friday, March 6, 2015. Mary “Klun” was the eldest member of the Lower Kootenay Band. As a child, and into her teenage years, Mary attended the St. Eugene Mission Residential School in Cranbrook. Mary was grateful for the education she received at the Mission. Mom met her beloved Hank, and they were married May 5th, 1951. The Lord blessed them with seven children. As the years moved on, she was then blessed with beautiful grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary had a love for animals. She had numerous four legged friends over the years, that she loved dearly... There were too many to count! Mom, you now have a new home with your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You will live forever in our memories and our hearts. We all truly miss you, and someday we will meet again! Mary is survived by her loving husband Hank; children Gary (Maryke), Gerald (Judy), Dick, Rita (Dean), Dan (Kathleen); her brother Andy Alexander (Florence); 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Keith, her daughter Angie and her granddaughter Lilly. A memorial service for Mary was held on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at the Wasa Community Church and she was interred in the Fort Steele Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Arrogant Worms coming to the city If that new January exercise schedule hasn’t worked your stomach muscles into shape The Arrogant Worms certainly will. Guaranteed to make your sides hurt, Canada’s self-proclaimed “Clowned Princes of Humour” are on a mission to make you laugh using only bass, guitar, great stage presence, super-tight harmonies, and sharp wit. A treat for audiences from age 5 to 95, this three-man comedy group is back at Key City Theatre by popular demand. Masters of tuneful and silly escapism, The Arrogant Worms are the combination of Mike McCormick, Chris Patterson, and Trevor Strong. The trio offers humour ranging from topical to the absurd and unfailingly delivers high energy, playful performances, complete with unusual participation from their devoted sing along fans. Originally influenced by folk and acoustic rock, The Arrogant Worms have been known to make use of Celtic, country, reggae, bluegrass, surf music, and gospel influences. Now one of Canada’s most popular live acts, The Arrogant Worms made their start on campus radio in Kingston, Ontario in 1991. Rave reviews of their early live shows led to a selftitled album in 1992, airplay on national radio, tours across Canada, and numerous appearances at festivals from coast to coast. In 2003, the group was recognized as the Touring Act of the Year by the
Canadian Arts Presenters Association. Since 1992 the troupe has released fourteen CDs. Their most recent album, SPACE, was released in March 2014.
www.kootenayadvertiser.com A25 Each album consists mostly of independent tracks paying homage, always humorously, to different genres and topics. Two exceptions are the 1997 Live Bait and 2003 SemiConducted CDs, which are live albums, comprising collections of their best songs. SemiConducted is performed
