Creative Monkeys and The Kimberley Arts Council at Centre 64 are partnering to bring young Thespians a chance to show off their dramatic side this Spring Break with a Theatre Camp. The Camp will focus on theatrical games, creative teamwork, and creating an original production to perform for family and friends on the last day of camp. Camp will run Monday, March 23 to Friday, March 27 from 9am to 3pm in the Theatre at Centre 64 for ages 6-12 years. Camp organizers focus on the process over the product, and believe that Theatre is the greatest Team Sport there is! For more information and to register, please contact Centre 64 at (250) 427-4919.

Employment can assist employers with hiring and staff training. “She’ll talk about all the options available for student employment,” Guarnery said. Seating is limited so please RSVP to the Chamber at 250-427-3666.
City will request sign change at Wasa junction C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
For years highway signage at the Wasa junction has directed southbound travellers to head to Cranbrook and Fernie on Hwy 93/95 through Wasa. It does not give any indication that you can also access Cranbrook through Kimberley. Mayor Don McCormick wants to change that and directed staff to do a little research into it. A staff report delivered to Council this week indicates that the signage is the way it is because previous Kimberley Council requested it. According to the staff report, “the Ministry

of Transportation will consider installing a new sign, directing motorists towards Kimberley, with messaging to the effect of ‘Cranbrook via Kimberley’, if Council makes a formal request. This sign would not replace the guide sign, but would be additional to the existing directional signs. According to Stephanie Daniels, District Operations Technician, the Ministry of Transportation was prepared to install such a sign some years ago, but was asked not to by Kimberley City Council.” “A lot of people not from this valley don’t know you can get to Cranbrook through Kimberley,” McCormick said. previous Council wouldn’t want to suggest accessing Cranbrook via Kimberley, though he suspected it might have to do with the longstanding Kimberley/Cranbrook rivalry. However, times change, and Council agreed that the signage should be altered. “It’s a really simple thing but sometimes simple things have big outcomes,” McCormick said. A council resolution will not guarantee that the sign will be installed, but will cause the local Ministry of Transportation branch to request this sign. Final approval for any new signage will come from Ministry of Transportation headquarters.

Politicians urge regional economic development Tre vor Crawley
Politicians urged engagement and participation in the community during a panel at the College of the Rockies on Wednesday afternoon as part of a monthly meeting of the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce membership. The meeting, which coincided with the 9th annual Career and Job Fair, featured Cranbrook City Councillor Wes Graham, Kimberley
Mayor Don McCormick, Chamber Executive Director David Hull and RDEK Vice Chair Wendy Booth in a panel discussion. Led by Keith Powell, publisher of Koocanusa Publications Inc., the four lent their thoughts to the state of business locally and regionally and their visions for the future. The panel focused on discussing the challenges and opportunities faced by businesses in municipalities
and the regional district. “What’s good for Cranbrook is good for Kimberley and vice versa,” said McCormick. “We only have to look back at the closure of the Sullivan Mine. Everybody talks about how hard that hit Kimberley, but I guarantee you the closure of that mine hit Cranbrook almost as hard as it hit Kimberley. “We need to be proactive. We need to determine what types of industry are suited for here. We have to hop on
a plane, got to Vancouver or Calgary and we have to go wherever we need to go in order to get in front of the people who are making those kinds of decisions. “We sell them on coming out here.” There seemed to be a consensus from all four panellists that there needs to be a regional strategy where municipalities work in unison with the regional district.

Grad Transition Presentations – an exceptional showing For the Bulletin
On March 3rd, 71 Grade 12 students presented plans for post-Selkirk to more than 30 school and community members and made Selkirk proud. As part of BC’s graduation requirements, grade 12 students are required to complete a body of work that has them examine their academic and career plans for post high school as well as create a plan for maintaining a healthy lifestyle (physically, mentally and emotionally) and a financial plan that will allow them to follow their dreams. Students must also demonstrate connection with community and reflect on their skills and strengths and how their aptitudes will aid them as they move forward in their lives. This course is worth four credits but students do not complete it in a classroom, rather they meet throughout the year with Mrs. Quigley for general instruction and then individually for specific questions. Their work culminates in a panel presentation

The presentation is formal in nature and thus students are required to dress professionally, be conscious of their manners and deliver a polished presentation complete with eye-contact and poise. Students have 20 minutes in which to present their work to their panel
and then their panel has 10 minutes in which to ask the student follow up questions or other interview style questions: How do you deal with conflict? What role do you tend to play in a team? Panel members generously volunteer their time to help make the presentation and interview for the grads more authentic. Among the volunteers are SD6 Senior Management,
School Trustees, teachers, Support Staff, District Supervisors, Kimberley’s Mayor, PAC members, representatives from local businesses and community members at large. Volunteers gave their time in increments of 30 minutes, most people volunteering for two hours at a time. Some were even here for the whole day! Just outside of Baynes Lake, a 2.6-hectare fire blazed due to industrial pile burning that escaped onto surrounding grassy areas. Two double-digit hectare fires broke out west of Highway 95A (11-hectare) and north of Cranbrook (15-hectare) are likely attributed to ATVs or dirt bike use. “Monday’s incidents are reminders for the public to remain vigilant with any recreational activities or open fires, and to ensure that they have contingency plans in place to extinguish any fire that may escape,” said Turner. CBC Daybreak was broadcasting from Cranbrook on Wednesday and a couple of members of the team, Chris Walker and Adrian Arsenault, dropped in to check out the Spirit Rock Climbing Centre in Kimberley.
Panel discusses regional economic development From Page 3 “The cities aren’t getting together with the RD on a regular basis,” said Hull. “Frankly, they’re not serving the taxpayer well, I’ll be blunt to say it. The East Kootenay needs to work together cohesively and have a regional plan, a regional development plan, a regional land-use plan.” Operating and creating policy from a regional standpoint sometimes clashes with the desires of individual municipal councils across the district, said Booth. “When you come to the regional district, you’re told right from the very beginning that you’re there to look at the best interests of the region, not the best interest of your community,” said Booth. “So you have to put on your regional hat and some of the mayors have challenges with that.” Both Graham and McCormick outlined their visions for Cranbrook and Kimberley moving forward. “We need to create an open-for-business city,” said Graham. “Now, whether that’s
business or residential, we need to be proactive in keeping our policies up to date, our bylaws in check and really listen to both business and residents.” McCormick— touching on a theme shared by all panellists—is to attract industry to Kimberley and the surrounding region. “So really, my vision for not just Kimberley, but for the area, is for this region
to behave as one and to pool our resources to achieve things that as individuals, we cannot,” McCormick said. “So my first goal associated with that is to land the first substantial industry offering—an industry that has well-paying jobs, that you don’t necessarily need a university or a college education in order to land those jobs, certainly not all of them. “And I hope we can
achieve that in the next four years.” Following the luncheon, the floor opened up to high school students, who were able to check out dozens of booths from various businesses and employers for the career fair.
Business visitors to Kimberley this week are Bill Herbert, supervisor of Special Events for the B.C. Region, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and Ken Buhr, technical operator for the C.B.C. They are in Kimberley to prepare a tape recording of activities in the Sullivan Mine, which will form the theme for the Sunday, March 18, edition of the regular C.B.C. presentation “The Canadian Scene” Mr. Herbert, who has been with the C.B.C. since 1937, is a familiar voice on the Trans-Canada network, first as staff announcer and in recent years in his capacity of supervising all regional special events. His journeys have taken him to many parts of the globe and, as he remarked here Saturday, he has only to complete the link from Cairo to Hong Kong to have completely encircled the world in search of broadcast material for

his program. His March 18 broadcast at 3:30 p.m. Kimberley time, with the tentative title “Man Against Mountain”, will deal mainly with the Sullivan Mine. On his arrival here he agreed it would be difficult to compress all of Kimberley’s activities into a single broadcast. Listeners who will hear the tightly produced broadcast on March 18 will be interested to know that many hours of tape recording will have been made before the material is boiled down to a half-hour’s length. There will be interviews with men actually on the job and reminiscences of earlier days when the Sullivan Mine first came into being. Assisting the two C.B.C. men in preparing their material has been J.M. Cameron, of Cominco’s Public Relations Department in Trail.

How Long Will the Oil Stay Cheap? I’m
in Alberta, the province that produces most of Canada’s oil, and there’s only one question on everybody’s lips. How long will the oil price stay down? It has fallen by more than half in the past nine months — West Texas Intermediate is $48 per barrel today — and further falls are predicted for the coming weeks. This hits jobs and government revenues hard in big oil-producing centres like Alberta, Texas and the British North Sea, but its effects reach farther than that. “Clean” energy producers are seeing demand for their solar panels and windmills drop as oil gets more competitive. Electric cars, which were expected to make a major market breakthrough this year, are losing out to traditional gas-guzzlers that are now cheap to run again. Countries that have become too dependent on oil revenues are in deep trouble, like Russia (where the rouble has lost half its value in six months) and Venezuela. Countries like India, which imports most of its oil, are getting a big economic boost from the lower oil price. So how long this goes on matters to a great many people. The answer may lie in two key numbers. Saudi Arabia has $900 billion in cash reserves, so it can afford to keep the oil price low for at least a couple of years. The “frackers” who have added 4 million barrels/day to US oil production in the past five years (and effectively flooded the market) already owe an estimated $160 billion to the banks. They will have to borrow a lot more to stay in business while the oil price is low, because almost none of them can make a profit at the current price. Production
costs in the oil world are deep, dark secrets, but nobody believes that oil produced by hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) comes in at less than $60-$70 per barrel. The real struggle is between the frackers and Saudi Arabia, because the latter is the “swing producer” in OPEC (the Organisation of Petroleum-Exporting Countries), the cartel that dominated the global Gwynne has oil market for the past fifty years. Dyer All oil exporters want to keep the price high, but Saudi Arabia was the one OPEC member that could and would cut its production sharply for a while when an over-supply of oil in the market was driving prices down. It could afford to do that because it has a relatively small population, very large savings — and a cost of production so low that it can make some profit on its oil at almost any price. But even the Saudis cannot work miracles. They can aim for maximum production or maximum price; they cannot do both at the same time. Normally they would cut production temporarily to get the price back up. This time they refused to cut production and let the price collapse, despite the anguished pleas of some other OPEC members that need money NOW. The Saudis are thinking strategically. OPEC only controls about 30 percent of world oil production, which is a very low share for a cartel that seeks to control the price. If fracking continues to expand in the United States, then OPEC’s market share will fall even further. So it has to drive the frackers out of business now. At first glance the Saudis look like sure winners, because they can live with
low prices a lot longer than the deeply indebted frackers can. The banks that have lent the frackers so much money already won’t get it back if the industry implodes in a wave of bankruptcies, but they don’t want to throw good money after bad. The real wild card here is the US government, which wants the “energy independence” that only more domestic oil production through fracking can provide. Will it let the American fracking industry go under, or will it give it the loan guarantees and direct subsidies that would let it wait the Saudis out? Stupid question. Of course it will do what is necessary to save the fracking industry. Ideology goes out the window in a case like this: you can get bipartisan support in Washington for protecting a key American industry from “unfair” foreign competition. That will certainly be enough to keep the frackers in the game for another two or three years. Meanwhile, the OPEC members that depend on oil income to keep large populations well fed and at least marginally content (e.g. Iran, Nigeria and Venezuela) will be facing massive public protest, and possibly even the threat of revolution. Their governments will be putting huge pressure on Saudi Arabia to save them by cutting production and driving the price back up. It’s impossible to say how this game will end, but it’s pretty easy to say when. Two years ought to do it. Once the outcome is clear, the price of oil will start going back up no matter which side wins, but it will go up relatively slowly. We are unlikely to see $100-a-barrel oil again before 2020 at the earliest. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

hinatown: On Tuesday, August 26, 1908, a most unusual court proceeding took place at the old Cranbrook courthouse. According to The Herald newspaper: “A link between the Orient and the Occident was welded when Mak-Jo, a Chinaman, took what is known in China as the King’s oath, in a case in which the crown was prosecuting Ja-Chu for the alleged theft of $612 from MakSee-Lee. "R. C. Lew, the official interpreter of Victoria, was ordered by His Worship to prepare the oath and, in the presence of a number of citizens of the town, the oath … was administered. The oath itself is written in Chinese characters on a piece of yellow paper, yellow being the regal or royal color in China (hence the name “King’s oath”) and sets forth the fact that if the witness does not speak the truth … all of his ancestors shall be damned, he himself shall be damned and all his descendants shall be likewise dealt with. “The right to use this oath in Canada is upheld by the decision of the judge in the cases of Rex vs. Wong-On and Rex vs. Ah-Wooey, as reported in volume 9 of the British Columbia reports, page 569.” According to the account, Magistrate Ryan and the court accompanied the witness outside the courthouse whereup-
on four candles and four bundles of incense were set into the ground and lit on fire. The paper containing the oath, held by the witness, was also set ablaze. A chicken was then produced which, according to the account was “an old and disreputable rooster,” and was placed on a chopping block at which point the witness, “with one foul swoop,” cut off the head. The court re-adjourned inside and the case continued. It was noted, tongue-in-cheek no doubt, that “the chicken disappeared, how is not known, but a high power automobile was seen steaming up Baker Hill soon afterwards.” The courthouse wasn’t in Chinatown, of course. Chinatown was across from the railway station between 5th and 7th Avenues and 1st Street. In present day terms it stretched from Food & Stuff to Integra Tire. It grew from a single Chinese laundry and a few shacks in 1899 to a community of hundreds by 1907. The courthouse was at the opposite end of Baker Street, a place the Chinese rarely visited, confined as they generally were to their own small section. Still, it was only a block or two to the downtown business section, the hotels, restaurants and the theatre district. Chinatown may have been a distinct community on its own but it was, against all opposition, an undeniable part of downtown Cranbrook. When the first white laundries were eventually opened in town, boasting “white labor only,” they found themselves losing money. The local townsfolk, many of whom spoke in harsh terms of the Chinese on one
hand, on the other preferred their clothes picked up, laundered and delivered by the Chinese. So, too, were Chinese vegetables grown locally preferred by many and the occasional feast of Chinese food was as much an indulgence then as now. For others of “the lower order,” Chinatown was the home of 24 hour opium, liquor and gambling. In describing Chinatown in April, 1910, following the news that the CPR intended to build a YMCA in the vicinity, the local newspaper stated that “a horrible, brutal eye-sore and serious detriment to the interests and progress of Cranbrook exists in the filthy, tumble-down huddle of Chinese shacks across the road from the C.P.R. station … and should be brought up by the city council.” it was a harsh, yet not inaccurate, assessment. The existence and condition of Chinatown was indeed brought up by the council many times over the next few years but little was done and Chinatown remained long after the YMCA was completed in 1911 at the west end of Baker Street. On the evening of April 7, 1914, Mayor Taylor, the police chief, two police commissioners, the fire chief, two alderman and two newspaper reporters paid a very rare visit to Chinatown to establish the conditions in preparation for a general clean up of the city. They described it as “deplorably wretched.” The residents, ever-vigilant due to a previous series of opium and gambling raids by the local police, raised a general alarm and soon

countless Chinese congregated in the streets and alley to watch the progress of the inspection party, although no opposition was given. The group visited laundries, houses, stores and restaurants and came to the conclusion that the district was one huge, deadly firetrap. Indoor stove pipes rested upon wooden boxes for up to 30 feet at a time, running past “heaps of indescribable filth piled into all available space.” Rickety stairs led up dark passageways to bedrooms holding up to 13 beds. The waste from the wash houses flowed under the buildings and into the back yards. Small cesspools both within and without the buildings were, in most cases, covered with a few loose boards, being both unsanitary and dangerous as “anyone might inadvertently fall into the cavity beneath.” It was not a pretty picture and certainly one that many townspeople wished to eradicate. “In so small a town’” it was noted, “and so close to all other portions of the city, an epidemic of disease could start easily in Chinatown and rapidly cover the whole city.” And there you have it — the dichotomy that was Cranbrook in those days: cut off a rooster’s head on the courthouse lawn for a Chinese court case? You bet. Let a “Celestial” buy a house in a white neighbourhood? Not likely. The links between the Orient and the Occident would continue to confound the community on both sides for decades to come. Next Week: Chinatown Part II

Dynamiters earn 2-0 series lead with Game 2 victory over Nitehawks Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
The Kimberley Dynamiters are coming home with a 2-0 series lead after claiming a 6-3 victory over the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in Game 2 of the best-of-seven Kootenay Conference final Thursday night. “We were a little slow out of the gates and they scored early, but we didn’t stray from our game plan,” said Dynamiters head coach Jerry Bancks over the phone from Fruitvale Thursday night. “We stuck with it, got a power-play opportunity and scored. After that, I thought we played fairly even up. It was good.” Spencer McLean opened the scoring, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage 1:24 into Thursday’s festivities. From there, forward Alex Rosolowsky provided the power-play tally Bancks was referring to, sparking four consecutive goals by the Dynamiters as they built a 4-1 lead by the midpoint of the second period. “He’s been outstanding. He’s playing the best hockey he’s played since he’s been here,” Bancks said of Rosolowsky. “Last year in the playoffs he
came to a close. McLean added his second of the night on a power play early in the third before Coy Prevost iced the game with an empty-net goal. The 17-year-old Eddie Mountain Division rookie of the year finished the night with two goals and an assist, building upon his already strong post-season performance. “You know what you’re going to get from him every shift,” Bancks said of Prevost. “He just brings it all night, every game. Full effort. Fearless. He’s just the kind of player you have to have.” Not to be forgotten was a three-assist performance from Braden Saretsky, who set up the goals by Prevost, Busch and Marchi. Dynamiters goaltender Tyson Brouwer continued his outstanding playoff run with a 33save performance in Game 2. At the other end, Drake Poirier was good on six of seven shots, coming on in relief of Schamerhorn. The two teams will take Friday off before returning to the ice for Game 3 Saturday night at the Kimberley Civic Centre.
was a healthy scratch a few times and this year he’s a very valuable contributor. “He’s always been really good on draws. You can put him out at anytime. That’s critical. A lot of people don’t realize how important that is.” Rosolowsky’s power-play marker was one of three goals on the man advantage for the Dynamiters. Jordan Busch registered the third power-play goal of the night, which in turn gave the Dynamiters a 4-1 lead and chased Nitehawks starting goaltender Carson Schamerhorn from the game. The 17-year-old Schamerhorn saw his night come to a premature end after surrendering four goals on only 10 shots. “He tends to overplay pucks and has a little bit of trouble with his rebound control,” Bancks said. “We took care of that tonight. We shot the puck a little more, got in his vision and scored on some rebounds.” Reid Anderson pulled the Nitehawks back within two shortly after Busch’s marker, but Jared Marchi restored the three-goal advantage before the second period

With a 2-0 series lead and a return home, Bancks believes the hometown atmosphere and ice surface plays to his team’s benefit. “We’ve got to protect the puck a little better, manage it better,” Bancks said. “I think the bigger rink [in Kimberley] will help us out. [The Beaver Valley Arena] is a hard rink to play in, for us. Early in both games we struggled with how quick everything happens. “We can’t worry about them. We have to worry about ourselves. There’s room for us to be better, so hopefully when we get home we will be better. After playing in front of crowds numbering greater than 1,000 through the six-game series with the Fernie Ghostriders, Bancks believes the smaller crowds in Fruitvale played a factor in his team’s slow starts in Games 1 and 2. “You have to be intrinsically motivated because it’s not happening extrinsically,” Bancks said. “I think that’s part of the reason we were a little slow. I think when we get home we’ll be real quick out of the gate.” Game 3 of the bestof-seven Kootenay Conference final is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kimberley Civic Centre. Game 4 goes Sunday at the same start time.

Comedian Will Ferrell hits MLB spring training Bob Baum Associated Press
PEORIA, Ariz. - Will Ferrell stormed through his Arizona spring training odyssey and emerged just like Will Ferrell. “Ruth, Musial, Mantle, Will Ferrell,” he said, addressing the crowd at his final stop Thursday night. “Who would have thought that one day those names would be synonymous? Show of hands - scratch that, never mind.” The star of “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” ”Elf“ and many other movies started in an Oakland Athletics uniform at noon, then was off to four other ballparks, playing for each team, and at every position along the way. Ten teams, five ballparks. “When I embarked on this journey way back at breakfast,” Ferrell said, “I thought to myself, ‘Could I do it?’ The answer is yes.” He hugged a guy in an elf suit as he left Mesa, held up a sign saying “Remember These Games Don’t Count” as impromptu third base coach for the Chicago Cubs, struck out twice on three pitches each, watched two home runs sail over his head, and chased the ball around the outfield during a challenging stint in left field for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ferrell wore No. 19
for every team except his last one. He didn’t want to wear the late Tony Gwynn’s number, so donned No. 20 for the Padres. When it was over, he took the public address microphone to the infield and recounted his day. “There’s no doubt I turned some heads today, even if it was just for a moment,” Ferrell said. “I brought passion to the field, dedication, ability and a lot of ignorance. The ball moves fast out there, a lot faster than it looks on television. It’s like a speeding bullet. It’s horrible, terrifying.” His caravan took him from Mesa to Tempe to Scottsdale. From there, he helicoptered across north Phoenix to Glendale, making a triumphant landing in the nick of time in centre field at the Camelback Ranch ballpark where the San Francisco Giants and Chicago White Sox were entering the ninth inning. The tour was being chronicled by HBO for a special. Memorabilia from his journey is to be sold at auction on MLB. com with proceeds going to Cancer for College and Stand Up to Cancer. In his final stop, in Peoria, he took the mound for the LA Dodgers and got San Diego’s Rico Noel, the only batter he faced, to bounce out to the pitcher. “Is there life in this
47-year-old arm?” he said. Then he walked off the mound toward second base in dismay when manager Don Mattingly came out to replace him. “Mattingly already cut me,” Ferrell told Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda outside the dugout. Eight and one-half hours after he first took the field at shortstop for the Oakland A’s, Ferrell played in right field for San Diego in the ninth inning. He had done it. As he walked off the field, Ferrell waved his cap and gave a security guard a high five. “They say there’s nothing more American than grabbing a hot dog, heading to the ballpark, and watching nine guys from the Dominican Republic,” he said. “... But you know what, today I learned that was wrong. They had eight Dominicans, and one guy from Irvine, California.” Ferrell introduced the Craig Pollard, founder of Cancer for College, saying the organization had given 2,000 scholarships to children with cancer over the past 20 years. At the end of his remarks, he dropped out of character. “On a serious, real note, what a day,” he said. “Thank you all, thanks to MLB, thanks to my family, to our production team and especially to Craig Pollard.”

LA improved to 3-0-0 against the Canucks this season with two meetings still to come, and jumped over Winnipeg into the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference after the Jets dropped a 4-2 decision to the Florida Panthers. The Canucks sit second in the Pacific Division, but both the Kings and Calgary Flames are nipping at their heels just a point back. “The closer you get to playoffs the more you want to be in it,” said Los Angeles defenceman Drew Doughty. “We’re not going to accept anything but to be in it and right now Vancouver is one of those teams in our way, second in the division, and we still have a really good shot at being in that spot.” Tyler Toffoli and Marian Gaborik, into an empty net, also scored for Los Angeles (33-2113), which has won four of five and 12 of 16 overall to rocket up the standings after sitting 13th in the conference in early February. A big reason for the Kings’ turnaround has been their play on the road. The defending Stanley Cup champions were 5-12-6 away from home as of Feb. 5, but are 7-2-0 since. “I think the games just got more important,” said Doughty, whose team plays nine of its last 15 on the road. “I think the guys were sick of talking about why we were doing so bad on the road so we decided to turn it around and start winning some.” Eddie Lack made 16 saves for Vancouver (3825-4), which generated very little against Quick after the first period. “They showed why they win the Cups,” said Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins. “They had a lot of patience, they had a lot of presence.” Toffoli scored on the

power play - his 20th of the season - in the first period to put his team up 1-0, and the Kings doubled their lead at 3:59 of the second thanks to a bad change

Hoflin backstops Ice while setting records along the way Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
Friday, March 13
To say Kootenay Ice goaltender Wyatt Hoflin has seen a lot of rubber this season would be an understatement. So how much rubber has the 20-year-old puck-stopper seen? Enough to put him within 24 saves of becoming the holder of a brand new Kootenay Ice franchise record. “It’s an accomplishment, but at the same time, it’s not much of an accomplishment if you’re not winning at the same time,” Hoflin said prior to practice Thursday afternoon. “For us, it’s just trying to get wins, trying to get points through this last stretch.” Hoflin has done everything in his power to help his Kootenay Ice squad get wins and points this season, turning aside 1,700 pucks through 62 appearances heading into Friday’s date with the Medicine Hat Tigers. With 24 saves, the native of Sherwood Park, Alta., will tie former Kootenay Ice goaltender Tim Winters for the franchise record for saves in a season. It’s a record that has stood for the entire lifetime of the franchise, with Winters having set

the mark by making 1,724 saves through 51 appearances for the Edmonton Ice in the team’s inaugural season (199697). “Wyatt proved early, even when we were struggling, that we could trust him,” said Kootenay Ice goaltending coach Mike Bergren. “Part of that is his ability to be a good teammate. He’s a leader, but he’s a quiet leader. He knows now, more so than any other year I’ve had him, what he needs to do to approach the game properly, to pick apart his game when things maybe aren’t going so well. “He earned our trust because we knew what we were getting from

him pretty much every night.” With trust comes ice time and with ice time comes opportunity. As a result, Winters’ saves record isn’t the only benchmark Hoflin has a shot at re-establishing before the 2014-15 WHL regular season comes to a close. The three-year WHL veteran talks about winning being the most important part of the equation. The fact of the matter is he has been winning at a near record pace as well. The humble netminder already has 33 triumphs under his belt this season, putting him within one win of tying the franchise record for victories in a season (34) shared by Dan Blackburn (1999-00), Jeff Glass (2004-05) and Mackenzie Skapski (2012-13). Not too shabby.

Goaltender Wyatt Hoflin makes one of his 1,700 saves this season in a game against the Regina Pats back on Oct. 17. The Ice netminder is nearing a long-standing franchise mark for most saves in a season. What other page of the Kootenay Ice record book Hoflin is preparing to splash fresh ink on?
“He doesn’t get too high, he doesn’t get too low. He comes to the rink to work and he understands what his role is. He knows exactly who he is in the net.” Ice goaltending coach Mike Bergren on Wyatt Hoflin He is closing in on a new franchise mark for games played in a season by a goaltender, with 62 to his credit thus far. Skapski holds the record, having suited up for 65 games in 2012-13. Additionally, Hoflin is approaching Skapski’s franchise mark for most
minutes played in a season by a goaltender. The New York Rangers prospect saw 3,642 minutes of crease time to establish the mark in 2012-13. Hoflin is 92 minutes shy of that, having played 3,550 minutes heading into the weekend. We aren’t done yet. Already in the books, Hoflin has established a franchise record for consecutive games played by a goaltender, appearing in 29 consecutive contests from Oct. 24 through Jan. 9. The previous mark was held by Todd Mathews, who appeared in 25 straight games from Jan. 21, 2009 through March 14, 2009. Okay, now we’re finished. Take a deep breath. It’s safe to say Hoflin has done a pretty good job of proving himself in his first season as the go-to guy after serving

as the backup to Skapski for two seasons prior. “The extra time he had in the net last year when Mackenzie got hurt in November -- he had to play nine straight,” Bergren said of Hoflin. “That kind of taught him about what he needs to do physically and mentally to stay, not just on top of his game, but to start recognizing things in his game that he needs to work on or zero in on to push him up to that next level.” With the heavy workload for the entirety of his first season as the number-one guy, fans may be left to wonder how the 20-year-old goaltender is feeling, both physically and mentally, with the post-season right around the corner. “I’ve actually been feeling really good lately,” Hoflin said. “The team’s done a good job of giving me rest when they have the opportunity and working with the goalie coach [Bergren], doing a good job finding ways to stay fresh throughout the game. It’s been good. “I just work on shortterm goals throughout the game. I look at it not as a whole game, but individual parts. Keep it more of a sprint, not much of a marathon.” Heading into Friday’s game against the Medicine Hat Tigers, Hoflin’s 1,700 saves rank second in the WHL behind only Landon Bow (1,760) of the Swift Current Broncos. His 3,550 minutes played rank first amongst WHL goaltenders. “He’s approached it really well,” Bergren said. “He’s done a great
job of adapting to what we’ve needed. Initially, going into the season, we never go in intending to play a guy over 60 games like this. He’s already at 62. That’s an NHL workload. He’s done a great job handling it. He’s very mature and he’s very even keel. That helps him. “He doesn’t get too high, he doesn’t get too low. He comes to the rink to work and he understands what his role is. He knows exactly who he is in the net. That’s one of the things that keeps him level.” With the Edmonton Oil Kings only one point behind the Ice for the first wild-card seed in the WHL’s Eastern Conference, Hoflin is going to have to stay level heading down the stretch if his team hopes to hold on to that top wild-card spot. “Hof’s been great for us all year,” said forward Luke Philp. “He’s played a ton. He’s played more than a goalie usually expects to play, I guess. He’s been great lately for us and he’s been a big part of us when we’ve been successful this year. He’s going to be a big part if we’re going to be successful in the playoffs, too.” With the Tigers presenting a potential firstround playoff matchup for the Kootenay Ice, Friday night seems like a good opportunity for Hoflin and his teammates to find a little more success and perhaps a record or two to go along. Puck drop between the Ice and Tigers is slated for 7 p.m. at Western Financial Place.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You seem to choose the right words to bring someone over to your way of thinking. You’ll make quite an impression on this person. Be explicit when making plans. A loved one or a new friend could be expressing his or her innate gentleness. Tonight: Be a bit impulsive. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Weigh the pros and cons of making a purchase. Some of you could be considering finding a way to augment your income. If you feel tense or unusually high-strung, take a walk and try to relax. You don’t need to fuss so much. Tonight: Out on the town. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You seem to beam as the day progresses. A child or loved one might push you beyond the limits of your patience. Try not to lash out at the person in question. Keep your cool. Make yourself aware of the finances involved with a fun idea. Tonight: Let down your hair. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Lie low during the day, but
know that it won’t prevent you from taking action where you feel it is needed. A one-on-one conversation will help ground you. Be sensitive when dealing with a brash loved one. Tonight: As soon as the evening begins, you perk up. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) A friend might tease you into taking action. Even if you feel a bit raw, make an effort to be kind to others. Use caution with funds, as money could nearly dissolve in your hands. A lot of activity surrounds a friend; you might want to join right in. Tonight: All smiles. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Be careful when dealing with others. You might be confused about what they are communicating, or perhaps you are missing some facts. Be aware of your objectives. Indulge a loved one, and buy this person a token of affection. Tonight: Celebrate the weekend. BORN TODAY Actor Danny Masterson (1976), actor William H. Macy (1950), author L. Ron Hubbard (1911)

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My sister and I traveled independently to Nebraska in order to care for our mother after she was hospitalized. We were there for two months, taking turns sleeping on an air mattress by her bed. Mom finally was well enough to travel back to my home so I could care for her here. During the time we spent in Nebraska, my sister and I went through Mom’s apartment, getting rid of things and sorting through pictures and other stuff. The second night that I slept by Mom’s bedside, my sister suggested I stay there and she’d sleep on the sofa. I agreed because I trusted her. My mistake. While I was in Mom’s bedroom, my sister went through Mom’s stuff, put things she wanted into boxes and sealed them. When I noticed the new boxes, she said she had just rearranged things to fit better. I’m pretty sure she took several pictures that I wanted, along with a few other items. She denies this and says I don’t know what I am talking about. I have no way to prove what she did, but those items have never turned up, and it’s been two years. Mom passed away recently, and now I have to see my sister at Mom’s memorial service. She’s going to act like nothing happened. I am so hurt by what she did. How can I not scream out what a liar she is? -- Still Angry Dear Angry: Our condolences on your loss. A memorial service is not the best place to confront your sister, who will deny your accusations in any event. You could snub her, being polite and friendly to others but decidedly cool to her. You also could simply ask her, “When you get a chance, could you please send me copies of any photographs of Mom that you have? I miss her.” And leave it at that. Dear Annie: After 20 years overseas with the military, my husband and I are being sent home. This means his family members will be close by. I can’t stand his family. They are rude, arrogant know-it-alls. My husband assures me it will be fine, and he is excited to see these people. I say a leopard never changes its spots. These people barely tolerated me when I first met them. Please advise me what to do about this. -- Not a Spotted Leopard Dear Leopard: It’s been 20 years. Surely you have changed in that time. Why wouldn’t they? You might discover that they have changed just enough that you can find common ground. These people are important to your husband. Instead of approaching this with dread, please open yourself up to the possibility that it will be better than you think. And if not, do what many others in your situation do: let your husband see them without you. But give it your best shot. Your husband will appreciate it. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Sinking Ship in Pennsylvania,” whose husband neglects or yells at their 8-year-old son. I was the oldest of five, with an alcoholic, abusive father who was in the military and spent most of his time overseas. And when he was home, he spent it either in a bar or with a local barmaid. I always knew he didn’t want me. I’ve spent my life being treated like a second-class son to my brother and sisters then and now. If this father also thinks no one outside of the family sees how badly he is treating his wife and child, he is out of his mind, because you cannot hide this. One of these days, “Jack” will suddenly turn on him, back him into a corner and unleash all of his anger on him, telling him how worthless he thinks he has been as a father.
