Creston area residents continue to be deluged with scams that are designed to relieve them of their money. “Seniors are especially vulnerable,” said Creston RCMP Cpl. Monty Taylor. “They should be aware that they are often targets.” Three different computer-related frauds were reported to the police last week, he said. In one, a Mac owner got a message that the computer’s firewall was out of date and a $500 upgrade, to be provided over the Internet, was needed to protect the system. Another resident received a popup message, purportedly from Florida, that the contents of his computer would be encrypted if he didn’t pay a $250 fee. Despite paying the extortion demand, his computer crashed three days later. When he

contacted the company he was told they would refund the payment, but then demanded he send a cheque to an address in India. A third complaint came from a person who was selling merchandise on a website. The cheque he received for the goods was for more than the selling price and he was instructed to transfer the excess to another bank account. Fortunately, a bank employee warned him of the likelihood he was being targeted in a scam. The cheque turned out to be a fraud. An Advance reader provided information about yet another recent scam. He was contacted by “Canadian Cash Awards”, apparently operating out of Las Vegas, and told he had won a second place prize of $750,000 and a new Chrysler. To collect his prize he was instructed to send $3,500.74 for “processing, insurance and delivery.” See SCamS, page 5

Mel Totten and Brad Sutherland wore wide smiles on March 12 in Calgary when they accepted four franchise awards for the success of Ricky’s All Day Grill. Their work as manager and chef, respectively, was recognized as being outstanding among the Alberta South/Kootenay division of about two dozen restaurants. Now on display in the restaurant at the Highway 3/3A intersection are awards for franchisee of the year, outstanding sales performance, best marketing and operational excellence. “It’s nice to be recognized among people who have long experience in the Ricky’s franchise,” Totten said on Monday. She and Sutherland assumed their key responsibilities at Ricky’s late in 2012. Both were well known to restaurant customers in Creston. “To do so well against restaurants in large centres like Calgary and Lethbridge means that we are doing it right,” Sutherland said. Totten is especially thrilled with the Outstanding Sales Performance Award, which the Creston operation won by increas-

Totten said that after working for independent mom and pop restaurants, she enjoys the support offered by one of Canada’s leading groups of franchise restaurants. “They know what they want and they have a history of success,” she said. “They have high standards.” Sutherland echoed those sentiments.

On Feb. 27, the Creston and District Community Complex (CDCC) received a Fitbit and a $500 grant to support sport and physical activity initiatives in the Creston Valley. Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks matched the grant, and Myrna Johnson — who applied for and won the grant — chose that the funds be given to the School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) youth powwow and the Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program (TRP). The Fitbit — a wearable activity tracker — will be awarded in a draw at the Creston Valley Blossom Festival roller blading event at the CDCC. Thunder Cats’ 2014-15 season a successful one BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
With his first season of coaching the Creston Valley Thunder Cats under his belt, head coach and general manager Jeff Dubois is pleased with the team’s performance — and he couldn’t be happier with residents’ support. “This is a community that makes players feel right at home,” said Dubois, who came to Creston after two years coaching Castlegar’s Selkirk College Saints. And the players, most of whom are from out of town, do their best to fit in, volunteering at schools and helping seniors through the Snow Cats program. They even shaved their heads to raise funds for the family of Isobel “Izzy” Nixon, a seven-year-old who has been having a brain tumour treated in Alberta. “Winning games is always fun, but you want to do it with a group of guys who have character and care about the community,” said Dubois. Overall, he said, the season was a good one, with a 28-18-1 record leading to the team’s most recent action in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoffs, in which they lost the first round to the Kimberley Dynamiters in game five of a possible seven-game series. Kimberley was one of only six teams ahead of the Thunder Cats in the stand-

ings by the season’s end, so Dubois had his team play a defensive series rather than a “run and gun” style. “We went into the series knowing it was going to take a complete effort to defeat them,” he said. The team followed the systems set out by the coaching staff, allowing only eight goals in five games, and making their only playoff win with the use of special teams. Special teams were a large part of Creston’s strategy over the year, with the team 13th in the league for power plays and penalty kills during this season’s home games, making good on their goal to be tough to beat at home. “You want to reward people taking the time to come to the rink and cheer you on,” Dubois said. Overall, he said, the season was a success, getting off to a slow start in September and October by losing their first three home games. “We came into the year with only a handful of guys back from the last year. … We made a couple of moves to beef up our offense and started to take off in November and December,” he said. December and January saw some big moves, with the Thunder Cats beating some of the higher-ranked teams, including the Dynamiters and Fernie Ghostriders in the Eddie Mountain Division, and the league-leading
Osoyoos Coyotes. A handful of the players involved in those successes won’t be around to play next season. Goaltender Brock Lefebvre is moving on to the BC Hockey League, and Tyler Podgorenko, who started the season on a Saskatchewan Junior A team, will likely move back up to that level. Dubois expects defenceman Maverick Lynes to move up, as well. The team’s four 20-year-olds are moving on, as well, advancing to the university and college level. Marcel Fuchs signed with the Selkirk College Saints a few weeks ago, Connor Kidd will attend Kentucky’s Decker College and Connor Ward is still deciding where to go. Kyle Richter is heading to the University of Central Oklahoma, where three former Thunder Cats — Brandon Formosa, Andrew Hodder and Trevor LeBlanc — played for the UCO Broncos this season and won the men’s Division 1 national championship on March 10. At the Thunder Cats’ annual awards banquet, Carson Cartwright earned awards as MVP, fan favourite and most game stars He was also sixth in the KIJHL in goals and points. “He’s probably the guy that took the biggest step forward,” said Dubois. Cartwright spent the season on a line with Richter and Alec Wilkinson, who was fourth in the league in assists,

Sutherland and Totten agree that the restaurant’s success is a reflection of local support. “We get great support from people throughout the Creston Valley,” she said. Sutherland says the menu, which has more than 100 items, is a key factor. “Our Big Breakfasts are popular, as are our burgers, steaks and ribs, and the introduction of prime rib on the weekends has gone Creston Room over really well,” he Creston & District Community Complex said. “Just as impor312 19 Ave North tant, though, is that we

even though he missed the first quarter of the season. “They’re a pretty exciting team to watch,” Dubois said. “That gives two guys to build on offensively.” And while players who are moving on and up will be missed, the Creston and District Community Complex sells itself, making it easier to fill empty spots on the roster. “We didn’t have a lot of guys come in and see the facility without wanting to play here,” Dubois said. “When you lose top players, you don’t have a hard time recruiting.”

Council approves town boundary changes
BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Town council approved a Town of Creston boundary redefinition, following lengthy discussions with the province, at the March 10 regular council meeting. The town boundary to the south on Erickson Road now moves to the north side of the road from its previous line near the centre of the road. Creston RCMP suggests people who think they might be confronted with a scam should call police or check the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website, www.antifraudcentre.ca. The site outlines details of popular scams and warning signs to consider. For those confronted with “prize winnings”, it says: •Known lottery and sweepstakes companies such as Reader’s Digest, and Publisher’s Clearing House will never request for money up front in order to receive a prize. •Any fees associated to winnings will never be paid through a money service business such as Western Union, MoneyGram or by loading funds to prepaid credit cards such as Green Dot. •Any unsolicited phone call advising that you have won a lottery is fake. The only way to participate in any foreign lottery is to go to the country of origin and purchase a ticket in person. A ticket cannot be purchased on your behalf. •Never give out personal information on the phone, no matter who the caller claims to represent. About computer service scams, it says: •Scammers call and pretend to represent a well-known computer based company like Microsoft and claim that the victim’s computer is sending out viruses or has been hacked and must be cleaned. The scammer will remotely gain access to the computer and may run some programs or change some settings. The scammer will

In some cases the scammer will send a transfer from the victims’ computer through a money service business like Western Union or MoneyGram. The end result is that the victim pays for a service that was not needed as the computer was never infected. Another common scam that has hit local residents involves a telephone call from “a family member” who is in urgent need of funds to cover legal or medical expenses. Memories of a friend
As I walked up the street to attend a friend’s celebration of life service last week, I felt hopeful that it would provide a sense of relief. Relief for those close to Brian McDowell, who had spent a decade living with the fact that their husband/father/brother/cousin/friend was in steady, irreversible and heartbreaking decline, yet another victim of the scourge of Alzheimer’s. For me, the relief did not come. As I sat and listened to reminisces about Brian’s life, and then watched a slide show that documented his time among family and friends, waves of sadness crashed through me. How can this happen, this disease that eats away at a mind until the inevitable day comes that the brain can no longer function well enough to keep the body going? When news came that Webster’s Family Shopping Centre had been sold back in 1981 there was a sense of relief in the community. The Webster family had faced its own struggles and the landmark store’s sale would mean they could put what had become a burden behind them. Who were the buyers, we wondered. I had a special interest. I had recently taken over as the Advance’s advertising manager and Webster’s had been an important advertiser. I met Brian and Ian soon after they arrived in Creston and quickly appreciated that they were a sharpminded pair, with a combination of education, experience and determination that would serve them well. I did have some doubts about Ian, I’ll admit — he talked so often about how his girlfriend would soon be moving down from northern Alberta to join him that I began to think that maybe, just maybe, she was a figment of his imagination. Fortunately, Darlene turned out to be real. (Sorry, Ian. I couldn’t resist.) In a short time, Brian and Ani, and Ian and Darlene were integral members of the community. Brian and Ani’s family grew to include three
children and Ian and Darlene welcomed Stephanie to the world. McDowell’s became one of the hearts of the business community. It was part of my job to make regular rounds to the stores and businesses, to sell ad space and help organize sales events.
Lorne Eckersley While I had come to Creston only with thoughts of learning the ropes as a journalist, I loved the chance to get to know these folks who were employers and suppliers of goods and services. And each one was unique. Wayne Salmond held court in the back of what became Home Hardware, tracking hockey activities from minor hockey to the NHL. Jay Armitage was one of our best advertisers and he was completely reliable in producing neat and tidy ad copy for Creston Builders Supply. Leo Sleik was always a pleasure to talk to and the one-time camera department manager from Calgary’s Super S Drugs turned Kootenai Photo Supplies into one of the valley’s most successful businesses. Ed Reber brought his own brand of English charm to Sunset Seed Co. and Art Giorgini managed Tak’s Home Furnishers like it was his own business. Bruce Omelchuk, once an ad man with the old Calgary Albertan, drew his ad copy for his Mohawk service station so neatly and accurately that we could have printed it as presented. When I visited McDowell’s, I tried to make sure I wasn’t rushed. Ian was the decision-maker when it came to advertising, but Brian was always consulted. Brian and I would get into conversations about economics or business or world and national affairs
as we sat in the back office and Ian would eventually drift back to work on the store’s floor, knowing my visit wasn’t going to be short. A chat with Brian was always illuminating. He was a voracious reader and endlessly curious about the world. Few people I have ever known could speak so intelligently about such a wide range of subjects. He had a wicked sense of humour and I enjoyed every minute of those visits. We had a reunion of sorts a dozen or so years ago when I returned to the Advance after 12 years away. “My ad guy,” Ian joked. “I’ve missed these chats,” Brian said as I left following a lengthy visit. When Brian was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s it took all of us by surprise. Brian? This big, strong man with a mind like a steel trap? Surely this can’t be. It could be and it would be, though. Several years later, I stood chatting with Ian, who was out for a walk with his brother. “You remember Lorne?” Ian said. Brian nodded, but there was a look of confusion and panic in his eyes as he struggled to make sense of the simple question. I think a little piece of my heart broke away on that day. As I sat among friends at the memorial service, I wanted to stand up and say how much Brian meant to me, about how much I admired and respected him. About what a great role model he was as a family man. I couldn’t, though. I was overwhelmed by the loss of a man whose brain began to betray him more than a decade before his death. I couldn’t help but hope that, after he had drawn his final breath, that his spirit might somehow be reunited with the mind that had moved on — I hope to a better place — long before his body ran out of steam. I am grateful for having known Brian. And terrified that I or someone close to me will someday walk down the same path. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

Pink Shirts give negative message To the Editor: (Re: Pink Shirt Day photo, March 5, page 1) It is a positive thing to appropriately oppose bullying and many kinds of discrimination, and to teach children so. However, it is not a positive thing to hijack a good cause and try to make it serve a very negative message concerning sexuality. Immorality is not positive, and, while no one should be bullied for any reason, using an antibullying platform to confuse and deceive children from another moral angle is not acting responsibly. Our Creator designed us, and knows what is good. Jesus takes the wellbeing of children very personally (Mark 10:14, Matthew 18:6). I hope we will engage in many good causes for our children. Bullying and sexual immorality are both incredibly harmful, destructive and sorrowful — as we see, hear and feel all around us. Ken Lemky Creston
Canada can be great once again To the Editor: Regarding Pat Martin’s letter of Feb. 26 (“Bill 51 will harm rights and freedom”) expressing her concerns about Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Bill C-51, one can call it a secret police bill. I agree with Pat that Harper “is hellbent to destroy everything that Canada stands for.”
OPINION LINE
I came to Canada from Germany at Christmas 1952. Growing up under the Hitler dictatorship and after 1945 living under Soviet puppet German government dictatorship, I escaped from East Germany. It didn’t take me long to realize that I had come to a great country: freedom of speech and religion, living anywhere in Canada I choose and so on. It was like starting a new life. I recall good politicians who made Canada great. There was former prime minister Lester B. Pearson who stood for peace in the world and created the peace army, the Blue Helmets, and gave Canada the beautiful maple leaf flag that united patriotic Canadians from nations all over the world. Then there was former Saskatchewan premier Tommy Douglas, who did a lot of good for ordinary working people and whom we have to thank that we have for medicare today. He was the first politician who talked to me and welcomed me to Canada. “My Canada is gone.” I don’t agree with you on that, Pat. Our Canada is still here and it is now up to all of us to make it great again. We will find and vote for a real “Canadian” prime minister and government, one we can support and help to make Canada respected in the world again. We will look back on these dark times just like I look back on the dark times of Hitler and Stalin and their henchmen. When I was taking evening classes to learn Canadian history in preparation for my citizenship I was surprised to learn that Canada had its dark days in history, too. Trying to destroy the culture of the native people by trying to indoctrinate their children in residential schools was one, and supplying native people with smallpox-infected blankets was another human rights violation. Also, there was the horrible treatment of Canadian citizens of Japanese heritage, taking everything away from them and transferring them inland into camps. It was a great day in my life when I became a Canadian citizen and could vote. I do now know that along with my fellow citizens we have to be on guard for those politicians and others
who want to change the wonderful Canadian way of life or to fill their pockets and have power over us. Henry Dahle Creston
Rec complex should open on holidays To the Editor: I would like to express my ongoing displeasure with the open hours of the Creston and District Community Complex. On Family Day, I went to work out at the CDCC at my usual time of 11 a.m. and discovered the complex closed. In my former life, I used to work at a ski hill and golf course. Privately owed, I have to add. Year after year, the largest day on the ski hill was Family Day in February. Another large day was Christmas Day. The Creston rec center is closed on both those days save for swimming from 2-4 p.m. and Tim Hortons had a free swim from 4-6. Now if the management's excuse for not opening for, say, “holiday hours” from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., was that there was no budget for the extra staff hours, I think the additional business from visitors from out of province and from locals that are too busy to frequent the rec centre during normal hours would have more than made up for the additional payroll required to keep the centre open. We have a great facility and I am very happy to pay the assessment on my property tax each year to cover the cost of the improvements to our community, but I think the management has to figure out a way to avail this facility to our community and guests with less restrictive hours. If the manager was from a private organization, there would never be a closed day on a holiday where the most possible customers were available. Bryan Wuzinski Wynndel
Open house showing off renos
Finally, the renovations at Rotacrest Hall are winding down — at least the interior portion. To recap: There has been a general facelift on the interior upstairs at the hall, so now if you want to have a wedding or a dance in a smaller venue than the Community Complex, you will see new paint and features such as window coverings, flooring, bar, washrooms — you name it, it looks totally different. While not as many surprises surfaced when we opened walls and ceilings as there were in the community complex renovation (still some stuff we shake our heads about), there were a few anomalies that were cleaned up and brought to code. The upstairs hall is quite active with rental bookings, as well as New Horizons Seniors Society use for programs like bridge, crib, dances, movement therapy, coffee, dinner and pancake breakfast gatherings. There are still opportunities for private or community events upstairs, so just give us a call and we would be glad to answer your questions. Downstairs is where the action has been until lately and that area was renovated as the new home of the Therapeutic Action Program for Seniors (TAPS) and the Better at Home program for seniors. This area saw

more extensive reworks: a few walls were moved and the former apartment on the north end of the building (yes, there was an caretaker suite there at one time) was reworked in the main
From the Centre Neil Ostafichuk kitchen for the seniors group. The whole area got a replaster/repaint, heating, plumbing and electrical system rework and a new floor throughout, and again, some anomalies that needed to be remedied in the worst way. All in all, the entire building has a new, invigorated look and feel, and the user groups are proud to call it home. Yay! Open house time! So, TAPS and Better at Home are throwing open their doors 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 25 to show off the new digs and answer any questions you might have about either program. I think it’s great to have these new additions to already busy facilities; both the community com-
plex and Rotacrest Hall are hopping now and should be as that demonstrates the need of a service or services for the community. So, being as I was a safety patrol in Grade 6 on the bustling streets of Edmonton with my sash and wooden stop sign paddle, who better to say, “Slow the heck down!” We seem to have drifted a bit into familiarity as people are zipping through the parking lot a little too quickly and, with the addition of new tenants to Rotacrest, the chances of a speed-based incident seem to have increased. That is why we have the electronic speed monitoring sign the Town of Creston has generously loaned to us mounted on a pole as you come into the parking lot and we are advising our staff, as well instructors, to tell everyone in their classes that seem to roar in at the last minute trying to be on time. I know it’s not you, but maybe if you know someone that fits the description, perhaps you could mention to add a few minutes to their schedule so they don’t have to roar in or out like Parnelli Jones. I shudder to think how lives could be changed forever because someone was struck by a vehicle. Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

They say that the measure’s sole purpose is to authorize the government to take action to prevent terrorists from doing things that might harm Canada or any of its citizens. However, the bill’s critics — the most vocal of whom are highly reputable people outside Parliament, including some with experience in the national security area — suggest that in an election year Harper and company are simply trying to win votes by assuring the citizenry that Ottawa will keep the country safe, come what may. They contend that existing legislation already gives the government all the power it needs for that job. That may be true, but it doesn’t follow that we should dismiss Bill C-51 as just a bit of politicking. World Water Week Event
On March 19, help celebrate World Water Week by joining the West Kootenay EcoSociety and Friends of Kootenay Lake to watch the film, The Fish Between the Falls. One of the biggest river restoration projects ever attempted is happening right in our own backyard! The Fish Between The Falls is telling its story to the world. Experts across the US and in Canada are part of the Kootenai River White Sturgeon Recovery Team, and discovering their story took film maker George Sibley literally from coast to coast. 717 Vernon Street, Nelson, BC • 6:30pm George Sibley will be joining us for the screening. and at Creston Public Library Sat. March 21• 2-4pm

Now located on the same grounds as the Creston and District Community Complex, in the lower level of the Rotacrest Hall, you can see the familiar TAPS buses parked outside. The New Horizons Seniors Society continues with its program offerings having relocated to the newly renovated upper level. Their pool room remains on the lower level and we imagine over time there will be more opportunities for shared use. A surprise addition to our resources is an iPad from Columbia Basin Trust. TAPS participated in an online survey and was a successful winner. Thank you, CBT!

TAPS members enjoying some St. Patrick’s Day fun.
St Patrick’s Day shenanigans with skits, limericks, music and singalongs were a great hit at TAPS, then we moved on to Crest View Village and Swan Valley Lodge to share the fun. On March 25 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. you are invited to an open house to celebrate the re-location of TAPS and the launch of the Better At Home program. Ashlene Chadburn is asking for people to RSVP to 250-428-5520 if you think you’ll be there for lunch. TAPS will be running a program funded by a Columbia Basin Trust social grant starting March 30 for eight weeks. A second eight-week program will be offered in the fall.

Ending clawback helps children in poverty
Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Most recently in my life, ending the child support clawback has been a perfect example of this. A small group of people worked together and we changed the lives of children for generations to come. For a decade, B.C. had the highest child poverty rate. Half of kids in single parent households live in poverty. Right now, over 160,000 B.C. children don’t have enough food because their parents had to choose between paying the rent or putting food on the table. That’s enough to fill the Vancouver Canucks stadium nine times over. This is a big problem.
Government has the ability to alleviate poverty or make it worse. Unfortunately, the Liberals have abandoned many poverty-reducing policies in favour of those that
So when Rosie’s mom was injured, could no longer work and applied for disability, she lost the $150 per month in child support from her dad. Her dad paid it, but the government took it away. This has happened to tens of thousands of children in the past 15 years, and it is not right. Organizations like First Call, BC ACORN (Association of Community Michelle Mungall Organizations for create it. One glaring example Reform Now) and Disability is when they decided in 2001 Alliance BC have been calling to no longer allow children to on the government to end the keep their child support pay- child support clawback for ments because their single years. forms. But the Liberals weren’t budging. That’s when I decided we need to up the ante. I’ll never forget the first meeting I had with provincial advocacy groups. After letting them know I was committed to taking this issue on with fervor in the legislature, we decided to work together to see this through and set our goal to have the clawback ended in the 2015 budget (if not sooner). Then, I started to connect with affected parents. Single parents, mostly moms, from all over B.C. shared their stories and their children’s stories with me, and asked that I take them to the legislative assembly. Many of them came to the legislature themselves to press the government for change. Many more spoke out to their local media. In these stories, we learned how families struggled. We met children who went to school hungry because the support intended to help feed them was being taken away by government. The people who learned about this for the first time universally agreed that we needed to end the clawback. People of all political stripes were writing in, speaking out and taking action. The Union of BC Municipalities, Canadian Labour Congress, BC Teachers’ Federation, Canadian Federation of University Women and faith groups, to name a
few, got involved. Two families along with the Single Mothers’ Alliance BC filed a legal challenge of the clawback. As we took every opportunity to press our case to government, we saw that they were feeling the pressure. A few weeks before presenting the budget in the legislature, the minister of finance hinted that an end to the clawback may be coming up. Hopes ran high for families affected. But the best was when the Minister confirmed an end to the clawback during his budget presentation on Feb. 17. Families sitting in the legislature cried. For those who couldn’t be there, I called them later and one mom said through tears, “I can send my daughter to school with a proper breakfast and lunch now.” The group of people who came together to end a poverty-creating policy succeeded. The result is that thousands of children each year will keep their child support, go to school with full tummies, learn better and have more opportunities to reach their full potential. To all those kids and anyone who ever wonders if they can make a difference, I think Jack Layton’s words sum it up best. “Don’t let them tell you it can’t be done.” Michelle Mungall is the member of the legislative assembly for the NelsonCreston provincial riding, and is the Opposition critic for social development.

QuintEssence offering opera, classical favourites CRESTON CONCERT SOCIETY
The Creston Concert Society is celebrating the arrival of spring with a special matinee performance on March 22 with QuintEssence. Featuring internationally renowned vocalists Robyn DriedgerKlassen, Barb Towell, Frédérik Robert and Peter Alexander, with celebrated pianist Tina Chang, the five members of QuintEssence offer a fresh and innovative concert experience for lovers of classical music of all styles. Their concerts showcase the most beloved and familiar opera favorites, along with introducing audiences to delightful and delicious musical gems by celebrated songwriters who span from Bernstein to Loesser to Weill. Described as “singing with pure tone, absolute clarity of diction and vivid characterization,” soprano Robyn Driedger-Klassen is in high demand in the opera and recital fields, having held such roles as Sophie in Massenet’s Werther, and Alexandra in the Canadian premiere of Marc Blitzstein’s Regina. Driedger-Klassen has received critical acclaim for her performances of the Countess in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and with Seattle Opera’s young artist program as the Governess in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw. In addition to performing many renowned oratorios, including Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Haydn’s Creation, DriedgerKlassen specializes in contemporary works including Arnold Schoenberg’s
Pierrot Lunaire, and the premiere of her song cycle Perruqueries, with texts by Bill Richardson. A graduate from the University of BC with a master’s degree in opera performance, mezzo-soprano Barbara Towell is known as a superb singer and musician. She made her operatic debut with Vancouver Opera in 2001 in the role of Ida in Die Fledermaus, and since has performed many roles in both Rigoletto and Salome, and her most recent role, in Vancouver Opera’s world premiere of Stickboy. Towell performed in Handel’s Messiah and excerpts of Vivaldi’s Gloria with the Vancouver Bach choir. Her ease in a variety of repertoire from opera to art song to jazz puts her on the leading edge of the ever-changing world of classical music. Her voice, often described as “dark, rich and full of colour,” is enhanced by her truly genuine and sparkling onstage personality. Her passion for the music and the craft of singing shines through both in large opera houses and intimate settings. Tenor Frédérik Robert has toured North America for over four years with the Canadian Tenors and Romanza, as well as supporting and lead roles with Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatoon operas, amongst others. In his performances, whether opera, crossover, musical theater or cabaret, Robert is a versatile and heartfelt vocalist. duca in Rigoletto and Don Jose in Carmen with Vancouver Concert Opera, lead tenor in both Marry Me a Little and the world premiere of the new opera Love in Public, he is hailed as “spine tingling” and “emotionally stirring”, quickly establishing him as one of Canada’s “top tenors”. Peter Alexander’s greatest passion is to perform on the
world stage. Whether it is opera or oratorio, this baritone relishes every opportunity to share his artistry with everyone. Opera Canada magazine stated he “dominate[s]... by exhibiting excellent vocal command eminently suited to the Baroque period,” for his performance of the title role in Pimpinone. His opera roles include the title role
of Gianni Schicchi, Escamillo in Carmen, Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro, Schaunard in La bohème, and Frank in Die Fledermaus. Oratorio highlights include Elijah and Messiah with the Vancouver Island Symphony, Haydn’s Creation and Carmina Burana.

Performed in Cardiff by the Welsh National Opera and chorus with Pierre Boulez conducting, viewers will be treated to a naturalistic interpretation perfected by director Peter Stein, famous for his abil-

British music critic John Steane found the opera lengthy, but added, “Once it is over, it goes on.” Pelleas and Mélisande will be shown at Creston Valley Public Library at 7 p.m. March 28. CRESTON JUDO CLUB
Four members of the Creston Judo Club attended the Judo BC provincial championships in Langley on Feb. 7. With representation from almost every judo club in the province, the two-day event had many judokas competing in divisions of 15 or more fighters. The competition was followed with a provincial training session that was attended
by competitors and coaches. The Creston Judo Club is very proud to congratulate 2015 B.C. provincial champions Leelen Samuelson, who won gold in the senior division, and Kaeden Rendek, who won gold in the U16 50-kilogram division and bronze in the U18 50-kilogram division. The club would also like to congratulate Kyle Qualtieri, who won bronze in the U14
60-kilogram division and silver in the U16 60-kilogram division, and Mickevory Sluz, who participated in his first tournament and held his own against older and more experience competitors. The club appreciates the parents and coaches who made the trip to Langley, and the Creston business community and volunteers for their continued support of Creston judokas.
The Creston Judo Club would like to thank the following sponsors and donors
for contributing to a very successful Valentine’s Day Silent Auction, Dinner and Dance Fundraiser. Without your support and generosity this would not have been possible! SPECIALLY RECOGNIZED SPONSORS

Obituaries John Allen Blondeau
January 10, 1932 ~ February 18, 2015
With great sadness we announce the passing of our Dad, John Allen Blondeau, at the age of 83 while being treated for heart and respiratory related illnesses at the Creston Valley Hospital. Born in Estevan, Saskatchewan and raised in Macoun, John left school at the age of fifteen and started work in nearby coal mines. After two winters there, he travelled to B.C. and found work at a mine in Field and began a long career as a hard rock miner. He worked at various projects such as Kemano and the Mica Dam and mines throughout B.C., including the Reeves MacDonald, the Emerald and the H.B. in Salmo. During his years in the Salmo area, Dad met and married our Mom Nancy, and together raised five children. Prior to his retirement in 1997, he spent 27 years working with Imasco Minerals Inc. in Crawford Bay, Sirdar and Salmo. Those years with Imasco were spent at homes in Crawford Bay and Riondel. Dad’s passions were hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time camping and entertaining friends and family on and around Kootenay Lake. John was predeceased by his wife Nancy in 1983; his partner Jean Paulhus in 2013 and her son Mike; his parents; and his older brother Burt. John leaves behind son John: children Justin and Jacob; son Dan (Lorette): children Brandon and Travis; daughter Cathy Blondeau: children Becky, Corey and Sean; daughter Shelly (Paddy) Tremblay: children Danielle and Ashleye; and daughter Cindy (Ken) Lysohirka: children Taylor and Michelle. From Jean’s family- daughter Shelley (Ken) Kemle: children Jason, Bob and Renae; daughter-in-law Andre (Mike) Paulhus: children Amy and Dylan; son David Paulhus: child Blaire; and son Wayne Paulhus: children Skylar and Jade. Also sisters Marie, Claire (Toots) and Phyllis (Bunny); and many nieces, nephews and nine great-grandchildren. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate John’s life is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the Tremblay residence at 4749 Lower Wynndel Rd, Wynndel, B.C. In lieu of flowers we ask donations to be made in John’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. or the BC Lung Association.

Needle and Quill’s success
hen Colleen Deatherage started knitting, she didn’t realize it was going to become far more than a hobby. “I just started knitting like everyone else, but it started to become an obsession,” she said. “I really love the colour, I love the feel of nice yarn and I love having something practical at the end. It’s practical art, Story and and at the end you have something very tangible.” photo by That led the self-professed Brian “yarn snob” to make sure othLawrence ers could get obsessed, too, opening the Needle and Quill about a year ago in a corner of Paula Ebelher’s 12th Avenue Hair and Esthetics, offering fibrerelated products such as hooks, books, dying materials and handmade items. The shop-within-a-shop is a compromise that allows Deatherage to share her passion without having to sacrifice her career. “I love my day job, so I wouldn’t be willing to give that up,” said Deatherage. “It’s only because of the partnership that it works.” She previously ran an online store, but found the physical location to be a bigger benefit to the community. “I wish more people would consider this type of partnership,” she said. “It’s not just that the dollars stay in town but also our own interests. When we take our interests out of town, we take the dollars out of town. … “People seem really happy there’s yarn in town. They’re really happy to buy it here.” And it also makes it possible for like-minded people to get together — Ebelher opens the salon up weekly for Textile Tuesdays, an evening event when textile enthusiasts can be found spinning, knitting and felting all over the shop. “A whole bunch of people come together, and it’s so fun to see people relaxing and destressing,” Deatherage said. Deatherage, who lived both in the Kootenays and at the Coast while growing up, moved to Creston 12 years ago to become the clinical director at Valley Community Services (then the Creston and District Community Resource Centre), where the pattern repetition of knitting has become a useful treatment tool. “I’m going to teach knitting so the staff can use it with kids,” she said. “It’s a nice crossover.” She finds knitting to be therapeutic and relaxing, but it also allows her to create home-

made presents. Deatherage was always stocking up on yarn in Creston’s former McDowell’s Department Store as she made her way through her list of friends and family. “I think everyone got a scarf one year,” she said. But she’s not interested in working with just any yarn — synthetic yarn (though sometimes necessary due to allergies) typically isn’t a favourite. “You always want something that feels good on your hands, otherwise why keep doing it?”
She takes that a step farther, too, not just settling for whatever colours she can stock, using natural dyes from a Seattle company and Wynndel’s Garden Hoe Farms, and adding colour to undyed yarn. The dying process — which Deatherage will teach in Alberta this summer — creates variations, with each dye lot producing three to five skeins of unique yarn. As if the brilliantly coloured yarn wasn’t enough, Deatherage also offers Japanese paper, and can bring in looms and wheels for customers who want them.
Deatherage’s shop tucked in the corner of a larger shop isn’t the only evidence of partnership — among the yarn and textile products are local items, including Bad Duck Caramel and pottery by Andrea Revoy. And for another example of Creston Valley business owners working together, Bart and Alison Bjorkman will offer Deatherage’s textiles in their soon-toopen 15th Avenue shop. “There’s more collaboration than competition,” said Deatherage. “I feel I really see a side of Creston I wouldn’t see otherwise.”
