Club member Shirley Hubel, with her Shetland sheepdog Tux, says sometimes families can get a dog without knowing what they are getting themselves into. “A lot of the general public just doesn’t know about the different dog

breeds, what they are used for and whether or not they make good family pets,” she said. “Some are more strong willed or not good around children. You have to do your research and that is where we want to start — to help people know their stuff before they go out, get a puppy and it ends up in a shelter because they didn’t know.” Club president Glenda Minor agrees. “We are all about making people better dog owners,” she said. The club also wants to get people familiar with the animals, helping them understand how to act around dogs. “You don’t just run up to a dog you don’t know,” said Hubel. “You need to know how to approach any dog, doesn’t matter what breed. We also try to teach adults to teach their children about it.” The showcase at Waneta Mall also gave the public a chance to meet club members and show they aren’t as snooty as some people might believe. “People tend to think that we are a little but snobby, but we’re not,” said Minor. “We do believe in purebred dogs, however the Canadian Kennel Club has changed the rules where mixedbreed dogs will be able to
West Kootenay Kennel Club member Kornelia Geldrich and her rough coat retriever Charm practice their figure eights during the club’s Breed Education Day at Waneta Plaza. The club was at the mall sharing their knowledge about different dog breeds and showing the sports the dogs participate in. Photo by Liz Bevan compete in performance events like agility. We are not snobbish about breeds though. We have new members that just joined with their mixed
breed dogs, and we hope to change the minds of people. It is dog lovers coming together.” Like the club, some dog breeds are misunderstood. The pit bull has a reputation for being aggressive, and ownership has been banned in some areas of Canada. Minor says most pit bulls are big teddy bears. “We have a new member with an American pit bull, and it is quite a controversy,” she said. “You get one bad egg and it ruins it for the
rest of the breed. Her pit bull is just so sweet. The breed is not accepted by the kennel club, so she can’t bring him to formal functions, but she comes and trains with us. Someday, I’m hoping it will all get turned around and she can bring him.” The club is always looking for new members who love their dogs and want to learn more about different breeds. Place Names
Howser’s namesake remains elusive Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
Ninetieth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names For the last two weeks, we’ve been looking at how Howser got its name, but stopped short of investigating possible namesakes. While there is no definitive answer, there is a good deal of conjecture. • Answering an inquiry from the Canadian Geographic Survey in 1905, postmaster William Simpson said Howser was “named after an old prospector Hauser who, report has it, found placer gold on Hauser Creek, brought out one summer several hundred dollars worth of gold dust, and the following summer, going back with a partner, neither of them was ever heard of again.” • In the Arrow Lakes News of July 23, 1942, Charles J. Taylor wrote of prospecting on the Duncan River, ca. 1890: “We sold or rather bonded our claims to a man named Houser. (I think his full name was Harry Houser if my memory serves me right.)” • In a ca. 1949 letter to A.G. Harvey held by the BC Archives, A.L. MacPhee wrote: “Bill Houser, prospector, lived in a cabin there alone … He left shortly after the CPR built the road in there. Where no one seems to know.” • In a 1991 letter held by the Touchstones Nelson archives, the late Martin Lynch of Shutty Bench — an authority on Canadian place names — wrote that “The greatest mystery I know of in the naming of geographical features in the Kootenays is that of Howser.” He then added “it is generally known that Howser is a misspelling of the surname of Fred Hauser or Houser, an early prospector in these parts. Fred Hauser came up from the States in [1866] as a passenger aboard the original steamer on the Canadian part of the Columbia, the Forty Nine … “It carried goldseekers on their way to the Big Bend rush. Hauser was among them. The Big Bend didn’t pan out. Hauser and a brother, or possibly brothers, were active in the various creek basins draining into the Duncan River and their counterparts that drained the eastern slopes of the Purcells to the upper Columbia. What I
find interesting about the Hausers is that there is so little information on them.” Lynch said he discussed the matter with Phillip and Helen Akrigg, authors of British Columbia Place Names, who saw a letter from a nephew or greatnephew of Fred Hauser, who lived near Sacramento. Lynch repeated some of this in a letter to the provincial toponymist in 1997, in which he referred to Fred’s brother as John. Unfortunately, he didn’t provide any sources. • B.R. Atkins wrote in the Vancouver Province of April 1, 1922 that one of the passengers on the maiden voyage of the Forty Nine was “Hauser of Hauser Lake.” (Paul and Marion Howser of Reigate, Surrey, England, who have spent years trying to figure out how Howser was named, looked at the passenger manifest of that journey, held by the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane, only to discover the relevant pages were torn out at least 90 years ago.) Mr. Hauser — Fred, Bill, or Harry — seems to be of a class of phantom prospectors who allegedly gave their names to local places. Others include Jean Kasleau and John Lardo, neither of whom probably existed (we’ll get to them later in this series). • The BC vital events index lists only one Howser — Shade R. Howser of Vancouver, who married Maude M. Bonavitz in 1912. But as he was then 33, he would only have been eight in 1887 when Howser Creek was already named. The index lists lots of Housers, mostly centered around Barkerville, but a Roy Jacob Houser married in Nelson in 1915 and a Charles Everett Houser married in Rossland in 1916. • There is only one Howser in all of Canada on the 1881 census, Mary W. Howser in Ontario, but plenty of Hausers and Housers. On the 1891 census, there are ten people named Howser in Ontario and one in Manitoba. On the 1901 census, there are no Howsers in BC, although there is a William Hauser, 30, in West Kootenay, plus a John and William Houser, ages 33 and 35.

Popoff chosen for seniors council
Krestova resident one of 30 members selected from across BC TAMARA HYND West Kootenay Advertiser
Krestova resident Walter Popoff has been appointed to a new 30-member council of seniors from across the province by BC’s seniors advocate. Council members will be key volunteer advisers to Isobel Mackenzie and her office. “I was really honoured,” said Popoff, who attended the first meeting in Richmond on March 6. He said the appointment is “totally separate” from his role as Area H director on the Regional District of the Central Kootenay, although it has certainly helped to know the issues.

bringing forward truly rural issues like transportation to the table — transportation for groceries, to doctors, to hospitals in Trail or Kelowna.” While he said the transit system is great, it doesn’t always fit seniors’ needs. Prior to being elected to the regional district in 2008, Popoff volunteered as a senior citizens counsellor with Interior Health, connecting seniors with information and resources. The council is expected to meet four times annually. Mackenzie wrote: “The applications for this council were outstanding and it is inspiring to see so many seniors willing to offer their time to serve fellow seniors. “This is an exciting new journey we are embarking upon and I am very fortunate that I will be guided in my work by actual seniors who can ensure their many perspectives are heard and considered. I want to advocate for seniors with seniors.” The appointed council members have diverse backgrounds. Among the group are advisers with experience in social
Walter Popoff work, teaching, health care, business, and local government. Advisers range in age from 65 to 85, live in 26 municipalities in all regions of BC, and come from diverse cultures and communities. Recommendations for council members were made by the Council of Senior Citizens’ Organizations of British Columbia (COSCO-BC) on behalf of the advocate, after reviewing over 300 applications. In addition
to the council, the advocate welcomes the public and service providers to get involved in an advisory role on upcoming committees and focus groups. The Office of the Seniors Advocate is an independent office monitoring and analyzing systemic issues affecting seniors. • On the 1898 BC voters list, there is one Hauser, and two Housers, but no Howsers. • The Nelson Miner of March 27, 1897 mentioned “Howser and LaPoint have purchased the lots formerly occupied by the Windsor hotel [at Ainsworth] and intend erecting a large hotel …” W.S. Houser was listed as a miner in Ainsworth in the 1899 BC directory. Even if the exact namesake remains elusive, Paul Howser is convinced Howser is the correct spelling, based on the cartographic record: before 1900 there were at least 28 uses of Howser on maps but none of Hauser. Furthermore, the first mentions of Howser Creek and Howser Lake, in newspapers and on maps, all used that spelling. Is there a relationship between Howser, BC and Hauser, Idaho? The latter and its corresponding lake were named by 1888

This rare Simpson Bros. billhead, which reads “Hauser, BC” was one of a stock printed sometime in the first decade of the 1900s, but still used as of 1918. Courtesy Ken Alexander for former Montana territorial governor Samuel Thomas Hauser (18331914). While Paul doesn’t think S.T. Hauser is Howser’s namesake, he does suspect he may have indirectly influenced William Simpson
and Shirley Keeling when their townsite on Duncan Lake was resurveyed in 1900. They called it Hauser, perhaps hoping it would help convince the Great Northern to use their town as the terminus for their Kaslo and Lardo-
Duncan line. The company was already familiar with that name, since one of their railways ran through the Idaho town. But if that was the idea, Simpson and Keeling were unsuccessful. While he was an influential position, Simp-
Trail Regional
son was unsuccessful in convincing others to use his preferred spelling. Although his store’s billheads read Hauser, he stamped mail with a cancellation that said Howser. Next: Who was Duncan?

Driveway’s Alexandra Straub will pilot an all-electric Nissan LEAF in the annual AJAC Eco-Run next week. The all-electric sedan, which is also the prize car provided by the Scrap-It program for our Plug-In to Win contest, will glide silently from the Vancouver International Auto Show in downtown Vancouver next Wednesday. The route, devised by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, will then take the participating 19 eco-friendly vehicles to Victoria via the Nanaimo ferry. On Thursday, the vehicles will be put through their paces on a handling course in Langford to see how versatile they are. The EcoRun concludes that evening in Vancouver. In addition to pure electric vehicles, the Eco-Run
includes plug-in and conventional hybrids, as well as vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells, diesel-fuelled powertrains and highly efficient gasoline options. There’s no limit to the size of vehicle showcased, as they range from subcompacts to pickup trucks. The participants include the 2015 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell, 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel, 2015 Kia Soul EV, 2015 Ford Focus 1.0-litre, 2015 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid and the 2015 Chevy Volt. The purpose of the event is to inform consumers of these alternative options. These new vehicles are driven in real-world road conditions in order to fully test for fuel efficiency and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

It’s not just about glitz on wheels models come in the shape of a 15.5 cm display audio with AM/FM, CD and MP3 with USB input and Bluetooth capability, along with power windows and power door locks. VW Jetta ($14,990) - Your eyes are not deceiving you. The new VW Jetta Trendline is priced as modestly as you see. For that money, you’ll get a standard rearview camera, Bluetooth, as well as six airbags. Not to mention a great looking sedan. It’s powered by a 2.0L, fourcylinder engine, which yields 115 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque. You have your choice between the standard fivespeed manual or a six-speed automatic. The Jetta has room for five, a 60/40 split rear seat and 440L or cargo capacity. Furthermore, it comes with revised front
manual transmission linked with a 1.6L, four-cylinder GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine, along with 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, there’s 600L of cargo space. Not bad for such a small car. Then there’s the Accent sedan for those who aren’t on the hatchback bandwagon. The engine specs and transmission are the same but in a four-door format. Trunk space, however, is reduced to 389L. Toyota Yaris ($14,545) - Available in both a three-door or five-door configuration, the 2015 Toyota Yaris fits five people inside, has nine airbags and an very efficient 1.5L, four-cylinder engine producing 106 horsepower under its Europeanstyled hood. Standard features included on the Yaris

Auto shows dazzle with glitzy expensive new cars but among them are some hidden less expensive gems. You can still get a great vehicle, with a fully warranty, AND some perks for under $20K. Here are five cars with frugal price stickers at the Vancouver auto show that that will get you where you need to go and with a few goodies. Hyundai Accent Sedan/Hatchback ($13,249/$13,599) - The Hyundai Accent five-door is quite possibly the bestlooking car within its price range. And it’s hard to believe that kind of style comes in under $14K. And for that meagre price, you get a standard six-speed (yes, six)

It’s not just about glitz on wheels Ford Focus Sedan/Hatchback ($16,449/$18,849) - For 2015, the Focus for Ford is about styling and efficiency! There’s a new look for the Focus sedan and hatchback that includes a restyled hood, grille, new rear lamp clusters and a restyled trunk lid. You’ll have the option of both a four-door sedan or a five-door hatch. Standard on Focus for the first time is the rearview camera, which will appear on either a 10.4 cm screen or the 20.3 cm screen that comes with MyFord Touch-equipped cars.

As an added bonus, it comes with a manual transmission. But for those who prefer not shifting their own gears, there’s an available Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). For the 2015 model year, it also received some cosmetic upgrades, you know, to keep it looking young and hip. The Impreza is powered by a 2.0L horizontally opposed, fourcylinder SUBARU BOXER engine giving you 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc. ca

Five hot new crossovers on show
By Zack Spencer
Several new crossovers will be featured at this year’s Vancouver auto show. Honda recently revealed for the first time at the Chicago and Toronto auto shows, the all-new Pilot. Gone is the boxy three-row vehicle, replaced by a sleeker, more stylish design. Now equipped with LED headlights and LED daytime running lights, along with available 20-inch wheels and panoramic sunroof, this is a modern take on family hauling. The Pilot is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine, matched to a six-speed automatic transmission or an optional nine-speed unit. This new model will be sold with front or all wheel drive
and because it is 135kg lighter than the last model it should be more efficient. Mercedes is renaming the M-Class as the GLE. GL refers to an SUV/Crossover and the E is the “E-Class of SUVs”. To confuse things a bit more, the first debut is the GLE Coupe, a sportier coupe-like SUV designed to compete with the BMW X6. This Mercedes, with its sleeker silhouette and powerful 262-hp biturbo V6, looks great. It will range from comfort to all-out performance. The Acura RDX has been a big hit for this premium brand. Based on the everpopular Honda CR-V, this Acura is filled with lots of luxury touches for a modest
price. The 2016 RDX showcases the latest look of the Acura family. The dual LED headlamps and improved interior design, including two screens in the centre of the dash, puts the RDX in line with the new TLX and recent MDX. Good news is that the trusty V6 engine will stay for 2016. Hyundai has announced that they it will start leasing Hydrogen Fuel Cell Tucson SUVs to Canadians this year, with the Vancouver area being the first market to receive these world-class vehicles. This is an electric SUV but instead of getting electricity from the grid it is produced using an onboard hydrogen fuel cell. The owner fills the fuel tank with hydrogen, not gasoline,
Mercedes GLE
and drives normally. The fuel cell Tucson can go 420 kilometres on one tank of fuel, a range about which electric car manufac-
SPRING
turers can only dream.

The most popular will be the allnew 3.0L diesel engine that produces a whopping 440 lb.-ft. of torque and better fuel consumption. In fact, Range Rover claims a 32 percent improvement over the regular V6 model. On the high performance end is the Range Rover SVR, capable of a run to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. This will be the first Range Rover to sport the new SVR (Special Vehicle Racing) badge. Prices remain to be finalized on most of these vehicles at press time. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Pick of the Week: Artful car2go Nomi Chi, a fourth year student at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, created this car wrap as part of collaboration between TED 2015, car2go and her school. It’s one of seven of the car share program’s vehicles wrapped by original art from her fellow students. One was displayed at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre while the TED talks event was underway and the rest circulated in the car2go fleet. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Drives-U-Crazy One of the biggest traffic beefs expressed by readers is about left turners who won’t move out into the intersection. Doing so, enables at least two cars and perhaps three to make the turn at the light change, which reduces frustration. The other day I saw a police car barely straddle the crosswalk, refusing to move out. What hope is there? What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
