Critics pan ferry rate hikes of ‘only’ 1.9 per cent J.r. rarDon Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Transportation Minister Todd Stone said Wednesday he was encouraged by the BC Ferries commissioner’s recommendation to cap fare rate increases at 1.9 per cent in each of the next four years. But critics of continued price hikes in the wake of recent service cuts had a different reaction. “People are saying it’s good news, but we’ve been so battered by fare increases for the last three years that it makes 1.9 per cent look good,” said North Island MLA Claire Trevena, the NDP’s transportation critic. “We get another four per cent increase in April (2014), so that’s compounded to six per cent on what we’re already paying over the next 12 months.” The 1.9 per cent increases would be implemented beginning in April 2016 and continue each year through 2019 as part of BC Ferries’ fourth performance term (PT4). The recommendation by BC Ferries Commissioner Gord Macatee does not affect the 3.9 per cent rate increase scheduled for next month, the last of a series of fare increases

The board of directors endorsed a 2015 Strathcona Regional District budget last week that includes a minimal tax increase for Campbell River taxpayers and a

decrease in taxes for all other communities with the exception of Area D and Gold River. In Campbell River, homeowners are expected to pay $216 in property taxes for the regional district this year, an increase of $3

over 2014 for the average assessed home. Taxes in Gold River are set to stay the same at $16 while in Sayward taxes are expected to go down by $2 to $19 for the average home. Tahsis will see a $1 decrease to $11 and home owners in

Zeballos will pay $12, $2 less than in 2014. In the Kyuquot/Nootka portion of Area A taxes are expected to go down by $20 while in the Sayward area of Area A taxes will go down by $12. For Area B (Cortes Island), taxes are set to

decrease by $43 to $689 this year while in Area C (Quadra-Discovery Islands-Mainland Inlets) taxes are expected to go down by $20 to $341. Area D will see the largest increase in taxes at $79, going from $1,341 last year for the aver-

The pair, who live in Mill Bay, were asked by Teufel’s mom, who works at the daycare, whether they would be interested in the job. “It was kind of scary because we’ve never done something like this,” Teufel said. “They asked for cars and we came up with the design, which is a mix of the Flintstones and Pixar.” Carlson said etching out the details on the cars was the most enjoyable part of the work. “We started with chain saws and worked our way down to hobby drills and grinders,” Teufel said. “It was awesome, we really enjoyed it.”

age assessed home to $1,420 in 2015. Directors approved in principle the 2015-2019 financial plan, which includes $13.2 million in operating expenses for 2015, at the March 11 board meeting. The 2015 financial plan also includes $2.3 million for capital projects, with 36 per cent of that to be funded through contributions from other agencies, such as grants from senior levels of government. T he c apit a l pl an includes $716,400 for the Quathiaski Cove sewer extension on Quadra Island, as well as several Strathcona Gardens projects including $42,800 for a lighting upgrade on Arena 2 (pending security of grant funding), $50,000 for rubber flooring at Arena 2, $23,000 for fitness

Monica Brown at Christian Life Children’s Centre said the logs, which were transported by Telus volunteers to the daycare, had been

sitting in the back yard of the centre since last fall. The decision was made recently to create a third playground using all natural ele-

and rehab equipment, $20,000 for landscaping along Pinecrest Street and $22,300 for parking lot lighting upgrades. The financial plan also carries a low debt load. “The regional district has a low debt position, with less than two per cent of 2015 operating expenses going to principal and interest payments,” wrote Dawn Christenson, the regional district’s finance manager, in a report to the board. “Approximately 61 per cent of the funding for services comes from tax requisitions in 2015; the balance is funded primarily from grants, user fees, and prior year surpluses.” The 2015 budget will be up for final approval and adoption at the Strathcona Regional District board of directors meeting March 26.

The third incident took place Wednesday when the small tug Syringa sank quickly while towing a roll-on equipment barge five nautical miles from Sechelt. The two crew members escaped and swam to nearby Mary Island, where they were taken in at the lighthouse station and warmed until they could be evacuated. No equipment from the barge was lost or damaged in the incident.

totaling 12 per cent from 2013-15. “It certainly could have been worse, but it’s not great news at all,” said Jim Abram, Strathcona Regional District chair and longtime critic of the BC Ferries corporation. “And the 1.9 per cent is just an average across the entire system. Quadra (Island) could be three per cent and somebody else could be 0.5.” Stone said the commissioner’s ruling — which is just a preliminary recommendation — would bring price hikes into alignment with inflation, and represents good news for British Columbian’s living in coastal communities. “It is evidence that the province and BC Ferries’ efforts to find savings and efficiencies are moving price caps in the right direction,” said Stone, addressing the media Wednesday several hours after Macatee released his report. Stone also suggested Macatee’s report

affirmed the government’s steps to control costs and find savings in the coastal ferry system, but at the same time he ruled out closing one of the two large ferry terminals in Nanaimo, despite the commissioner’s instruction to explore that option. He also said he is in discussions with the federal government to increase its subsidy to BC Ferries, which lags behind the federal

subsidy to East Coast ferries. But he did not bring up the preferred solution of Abrams and other regional district board chairs to scrap the quasi-private BC Ferries Corporation and return ferries to the transportation ministry. “What we asked for was to roll the fares back to the 2003 rates,” Abram said, citing a report released during last fall’s Union of BC Municipali-

ties conference. “At that rate it’s still unaffordable, but at the 2015 rate, it’s outrageous.” Trevena noted the proposed 1.9 per cent rate hike cap is based on an average ridership increase of two per cent. While ridership numbers have plummeted since 2008, Stone said Wednesday that the major routes have enjoyed an increase of 0.64 year-to-date. The Liberal government is also projecting an increase in ridership due to increased tourism resulting from the low Canadian dollar. “When they talk about a two per cent increase in ridership, they’re looking at tourism,” Trevena said. “But we have people who have lived here for generations who are dependent on ferries. “I think the government has missed an opportunity on this. They’re looking at funding and trying to keep it low. Instead, I think government could look at BC Ferries in a different light and realize a genuine investment in ferries could bring the province a strong return.”

The three incidents in such a compressed time frame stretched the resources of the TSB’s Richmond detachment. “We’re looking to send the two investigators in Campbell River (with Lasqueti Daughters) to meet the crew of this boat (Syringa) on their way back,” said Raman. “We’d had a lull for quite some time; this is the first time we’ve had back-to-back incidents in the same area.”

Log Baron sank while towing an empty barge southwest of Egg Island. “The two crew members jumped into the water, got onto the barge they were towing and released the bridle before the tug sank,” said Raman. Quicksilver bankruptcy blow to LNG plant J.R. RARDON CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A proposed LNG production and shipping terminal at the former Elk Falls Mill site suffered a setback this week when Quicksilver Resources Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in U.S. court. Tuesday’s filing in a Delaware court does not include the Texas company’s Canadian operations through its Albertabased subsidiary, Quicksilver Resources Canada, Inc. Its Canadian assets include natural gas-rich deposits in the Horn River Basin in northeast

B.C., and in 2013 it purchased the shuttered Elk Falls Paper Mill for $8.6 million and announced plans to explore creation of the Discovery LNG terminal on the site. In July of 2014, Quicksilver applied for a license to ship LNG from the facility, which would also convert natural gas piped from Horn River Basin into liquid form and provide storage. “Any plan to develop that area as an LNG facility was always contingent upon Quicksilver Resources Canada being able to secure a partner for our Horn River Basin Integrated Proj-

ect,” said David Erdman, Quicksilver’s Director of Investment Relations. “We continue to seek a partner for that asset, but with the filings and the announcement (Tuesday), our efforts have not produced … a viable solution for Quicksilver. That’s the reason we did the Chapter 11 filing.” At the time of its license filing last summer, Quicksilver estimated regulatory approvals and permits were expected to take two years to complete, with another four years for construction on the first phase of the proposed project. But that license request

was submitted just as the price of oil and gas began a decline that has since seen it plummet from nearly $120 a barrel to just under $50 a barrel last month. The resulting cash flow and debt crunch has driven three oil and gas companies to bankruptcy this month alone, with Quicksilver following Texasbased BPZ Resources and Houston’s Cal Dive International. In the run-up to last year’s provincial election, Premier Christy Clark touted the potential of LNG to B.C.’s bottom line. But those pronouncements were based

on a much higher price. “Canada has been a tough place to create value lately,” Steve Pruett, president and CEO of Elevation Resources, told the Fort Worth Star Telegram in an interview this week. “The resource is there, but the price isn’t there at the well

J.R. RARDON

Thanks in large part to the low Canadian dollar and lower gas prices, Campbell River is expecting recent gains in seasonal tourism to take another jump this summer. And the tourist season may be growing longer, as well. “I did a consumer trade show in the U.S. and from everything I heard, the Canadian dollar is going to be a factor,” said Teresa Davis, manager of Tourism Campbell River & Region. “We’re looking to get a lot of American tourists this year.” And the boost may not come from south of the border alone. Davis has spoken to industry insiders in Alberta who suggest that same dollar differential will keep many Albertans from crossing the border south for their vacations this year, and many of them may look at west coast trips, instead. “I think the dollar being down will be in tourism’s favour,” Davis said. That’s not all Campbell River has going for it. With its proximity

to outdoor recreation, wildlife and aboriginal culture, it possesses the range of experiences travelers are looking for according to demographic studies by Destination BC and Tourism Vancouver Island. “The cultural explorer is the main type of traveler to Vancouver Island,” said Davis. “So they will include some type of culture with their trip, whether it’s a museum, or First Nations, or local arts. It’s definitely something people include in their trips.” Of course, Davis adds, fishing continues to be a major draw for guests from near and far. But Tourism Campbell River & Region has shifted its emphasis in the past halfdozen years from fishing to that cultural experience, with a particular eye toward the burgeoning “eco-tourism” sector. These visitors don’t want to simply be shown sights, but to experience them through nature hikes, kayaking, mountain biking and wildlife tours among orcas and grizzly bears. “It’s shaping up to be one of the best years in the last 10 for us,” said

Our View

Military families need more help In light of the recent Wounded Warriors run, which shed important light on the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder in our military veterans and active members, the continued stonewalling of Sheila Fynes is, in our view, unacceptable. The Victoria-area mother of Cpl. Stuart Langridge is continuing to fight for answers and change for the future in the wake of her son’s suicide. After Cpl. Langridge, who had apparently been suffering the effects of PTSD, hanged himself on March 15, 2008, the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service launched three investigations. All were botched from the start. A report released recently by the Military We say: Mistakes Police Complaints Commission outlines the were made but of mistakes made no answers as to series by the CFNIS following how or why Langridge’s death. One of these mistakes was withholding a suicide note from Langridge’s parents for 14 months, for reasons that still have yet to be explained. The note, addressed to the Fynes, contained a special request for a private, family funeral as opposed to a military one. Instead, the Fynes were kept in the dark and were not allowed control over funeral arrangements. Canadian Forces Provost Marshal Rob Delaney said in a statement that mistakes were made in the investigation and that he is committed to learning from those mistakes. Yet there are still no answers to why these mistakes happened, and why it has taken this long to recognize them. Shaun and Sheila Fynes are two grieving parents that were caught in the middle of a bureaucratic mess. Sheila has made it clear that she is willing to meet with Defence Minister Jason Kenney to discuss changes that need to be made in non-combat deaths. She has been fighting this battle for seven years now, and the government would be remiss if it did not use her knowledge and experience to improve the system. The military, with the help of the federal government, needs to treat PTSD seriously and help stem any further related tragedies. -Black Press

The Brindy’s a hot ticket these days I’ve been catching some of the Campbell River Storm games during this playoff run and I tell you it’s the hottest ticket in town. It’s also blistering hockey! I arrived late for Tuesday’s Game Two against the Victoria Cougars, getting there between the first and second intermission. Victoria was already down 1-0 and at the beginning of the second period, they were determined to do something about that score. The pace of the hockey was unlike anything I’ve ever seen at The Brindy. Both teams were flying, with the Cougars pressing for an equalizer. The Storm held them off, weathering the proverbial storm, or should that be, the cat attack? Crowds have been good with sellouts and near sellouts. The Storm are a big attraction these days and everybody’s talking about them. So, good on them for reviving junior hockey in town. At Tuesday’s game, there was one fan from Victoria who

Game four goes tonight after last night’s game three was held in Victoria. ❖❖❖❖ And speaking of instincts. I was covering the small protest of the federal Conservatives’ Bill C51 on Saturday at Spirit Square when I noticed these dark clouds looming over Campbell River. Well, just when things were to get underway, the sky opened up and we were pelted by hail. Everybody was urged to get up on the stage which had an awning type roof. I scrambled up there too when federal Liberal candidate Peter Schwarzhoff said I should get a picture of everybody huddling on the stage. He said he thought my reporters instincts would have had me scrambling for my camera. Nope, my instincts seem to have a preference for self-preservation as we’ve seen before.

Island-wide solid waste solution to get Strathcona input “I would like to see a report on how we’re going to pay for this, because I’m assuming we’d have to pay for the costs involved,” Cornfield said. In a letter from AVICC president Barbara Price it states that two of the considerations of the committee would be “that each board will agree to cover the travel

Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

The Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) wants to form a committee to address the challenges that Island communities are facing surrounding solid waste. During a workshop in Nanaimo last September, representatives from nine regional districts identified problems such as an inability to locate waste disposal sites and control waste flows, difficulty with implementing diversion strategies to cut down on waste, and transportation and disposal security issues. The AVICC is asking all of its member regional districts to nominate one director and one alternate to sit on the committee which it hopes to form by May 1. The Comox Strathcona Solid Waste committee nominated Campbell River Director Larry Samson – with Tahsis Director Jude Schooner as the alternate – to represent the Strathcona Regional District and Director Rod Nichol,

for its representatives to attend in-person meetings” and “that each board would agree that they would be willing to share the costs based on a fair cost-sharing formula to be established through discussion with the CAOs and approved by the committee.” If there is enough interest by all nine regional districts, the commit-

tee would be formed after this year’s AVICC convention which takes place April 10-12 in Courtenay. At that convention, the City of Campbell River, with an endorsement from the Strathcona Regional District, plans to bring forward a resolution to have the AVICC conduct an assessment on the feasibility of a

Vancouver Island-wide solid waste function. Council has said it recognizes that regional districts on the Island are struggling with the financial implications of dealing with solid waste and wants to explore the possibility of reducing costs if local governments tackle the issue together and provide a joint service.

After some debate, Coun. Larry Samson was appointed to a committee addressing solid waste issues.

with Director Roger Kishi as alternate, as the representatives from the Comox Valley Regional District. But at last week’s March 11 Strathcona Regional District meeting, Campbell River Director Charlie Cornfield was hesitant to go ahead with Samson’s nomination. “I don’t know what the rush is,” Cornfield said. “I wanted to have some more discussion about the solid waste issues. We haven’t had a chance to sit down and discuss what’s important to us.

And if they’re going to represent us, what’s their philosophy on solid waste?” But Area C Director and chair of the board, Jim Abram, told Cornfield that the Comox Strathcona Solid Waste board was meeting the next day and a representative from both the Strathcona and Comox Valley regional districts would need to be approved at that meeting. Cornfield wanted to defer the issue until more information was available.

A new visitor orientation site for Cortes Island will add value for tourists, encouraging longer stays, shoulder-season visits, and increased local spending. Located close to the BC Ferry terminal, the new Visitor Kiosk will be an architecturallydesigned, open-air space with improved hiking trail maps and signage, brochure rack, seating, dog walk area, information on Cortes history, and local island amenities. The $19,000 project will receive up to $7,500 from the Island Coastal Economic Trust. “Focused, simple projects like this can have a huge impact on a small community’s tourism activity, and ICET is a supportive partner to help get this completed,” said ICET Chair Phil Kent.

Proposed by Cortes Island Business and Tourism (CIBAT), the kiosk will dramatically improve visitors’ first impressions when arriving on the island. The information will steer visitors to existing amenities and businesses and also support the attraction of new investment and residents. “Currently on Cortes Island, there is little signage and no proper visitor orientation,” said Sandra Wood, Project Financial Manager for CIBAT. “We know that by proactively guiding tourists to the ‘hidden gems’ on the island, we can encourage longer stays, repeat visits, and increased activity in the shoulder seasons.” All of that activity adds up to a boost to the local economy, and that’s an outcome that both CIBAT and ICET want

to see.

About ICET The Island Coastal Economic Trust is a $50 million endowment established in 2006 by the Government of British Columbia to help diversify the economies of central and northern Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast. ICET is guided by a Board of Directors and two Regional Advisory Committees which include more than 50 locally elected officials and MLAs and five

appointees. This exceptional team of leaders collaborates to set regional priorities and build vital multi-regional networks. Through a community-centred decisionmaking process, ICET has approved $48 million for over 130 economic infrastructure and economic development readiness projects on the Island and Sunshine Coast since implementing its grant program in 2007. ICET investments have leveraged over $270

n Feb. 21, the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser took place across Canada, including Campbell River. The event supports local community organizations that help the homeless. It involves a walk where those fundraised and involved, participate. The money raised stays within the town or community it is raised from. Carihi’s Leadership class had 14 students participate in the event,

and the school wide coin drive raised $1,285 all going towards our homeless community. All the leadership students that participated found the event was a great way to fundraise locally “Our leadership class was looking for a new way to give back to our community, the Coldest Night of the Year was something a lot of us hadn’t done before, so we were all pretty excited,” says Megan Grant, Carihi and leadership student. The 5km walk started downtown at the community centre and had

quite the turn out. “The sidewalks were covered with all of us walking in support of our community,” says Jessica Grant, a participant and leadership student. The leadership class, as well as Carihi likes do to as much fundraising and support for the community as possible and received support from the community, teachers, parents and students in making the event successfull. Overall Campbell River as a community raised $22,000, all staying local to help the homeless.

This time of year, most high school students find themselves in more and more stressful situations. Now, second semester classes are in full swing. For some students, that may be three or four academic classes. Each one of those classes comes with homework, assignments, quizzes, tests and projects. Teachers are scheduling their classes so that their chapters or units end before spring break. All of this easily leads to this being one of the

most stressful times of the school year for students. “Students commonly panic at this time of the year due to the fact that exams are approaching and teachers are beginning to cram for spring break,” says Marisa Wood, grade 12 Carihi student. With all of this work piling up, it can be sometimes difficult to manage stress. “I find that playing hockey and relaxing can sometimes help me with my stress,” says Curtis Palmer. “It’s hard to find time to relax, but when I do, it helps clear my

realistic is a good place to start. “If I find myself stressing about school, I try to manage my time appropriately to ensure that my work gets completed efficiently without rushing through it,” Wood says. But Grade 12 student Aleata Vanstone says, “Sometimes the stress becomes too much, and you break down. The best thing for my friends and I to do, is to take a break before things become too much to handle. After we feel refreshed and a lot less stressed.” This is a stressful and difficult time of year, students should make it a priority to do things in order to keep their stress at healthy and manageable levels, otherwise, it will do more harm in the long run.

Walk Away from Racism about journeying together We Wai Kai elder Alberta Billy has a cherished story she tells to foster understanding between First Nations and non-native communities. The tale is a legacy from her mentor Chief Dan George, the wellknown First Nations political activist and Hollywood actor. Billy inherited the story as the pair worked together to address the issue of residential schools more than 30 years ago. It’s the story of a sacred canoe. As Billy tells it, in the past to build the perfect canoe, aboriginal people went into the forest to find a massive and flawless cedar. After giving thanks to the tree, First Nations would fall the cedar and create the vessel they needed to make their journey. But now there is no one single tree large enough to create the perfect canoe, says Billy. “Now, we must go into the forest to find two perfect cedar trees,” she says. “And these two perfect trees would have to come together, so you can’t see the seam. It would have to look like one perfect canoe.” The story is a metaphor for what needs to happen between native and non-native people for society to move forward today, notes Billy. “We are from all different walks of life, and we must compromise and come together to work for the goodness of our children and our people.” The story, though decades old, has meaning for our lives, and we’re just beginning to apply its lessons, says Billy. The annual Walk Away from Racism is a way people can work and journey together, she adds. “I think the [Walk] in the Quadra and Campbell River area is a good thing,” she says. “We have different

BOOMERS & Beyond 100 years and still going strong When May Knowles arrived in Campbell River more than 60 years ago, she was a pioneer. Today, she gets a new title: centenarian. May was born Florence May Blyth on March 20, 1915 in the District of Wapella, Sask. A resident of Campbell River since 1951, she will celebrate her 100th birthday at a party in the Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall beginning at 1 p.m today. “We got to Campbell River and found no place to live,” Knowles wrote in a short biography ahead of the birthday gathering. “It was just

a small village and with the construction in full swing, everything was taken up.” After spending those first winter months camping and squatting in an old building that was slated for demolition, May and her husband Ivan put down $25 and agreed to an additional $25 a month for a lot on Quinsam Road, at the total asking price of $500. Her daughter, Ethel, bought another, adjacent lot for $500. “We proceeded to clear the lots and build houses,” Knowles said. “We had no machinery, so it had to be done by hand. We worked like

Simple Tips for Optimal Digestive Health in Seniors By Dr. Ingrid Pincott As you get older your stomach produces less hydrochloric acid so digesting food can become more challenging. In addition you may be taking medications that can also interfere not only with bowel regularity but digestive functions produced by the pancreas and liver. Here are a few simple tips to help. Constipation: drinking enough fluids may not be enough to help with regularity and as you get older your activity levels also decline. Some great fibers to include in your daily regime include psillium, flaxmeal or hemp hearts. These may interfere with your medication so be sure and speak with your health care provider. If you are inclined to make yourself a “nutribullet” green drink for your breakfast this can be a great start! Vitamin C and magnesium can also act as natural laxatives and are healthier to take every day rather than herbal laxatives. Diarrhea: often this can be easily turned around with the use of the appropriate probiotics. I recommend daily ingestion of probiotics for the immune system, however many find a bowel regulation also occurs, not to

mention an improvement in gas and bloating. Gas and bloating: Because of decreasing digestive function as we age, many benefit from taking digestive enzymes to help with gas and bloating. Probiotics help too as do dietary adjustments to eliminate food sensitivities. Dysbiosis or the unhealthy mix of microbiota (gut bacteria) also creates gas and bloating. Heartburn: Taking medications for heartburn is very common and these include proton pump inhibitors. They certainly help with symptoms and in some cases are important for preventing esophageal cancers. However if you don’t have Barrett’s esophagus, then natural therapeutics may work just fine! Tyees fall one goal short In a game to determine the last remaining semifinal berth at the Tier 2 provincial hockey championships, the Campbell River bantam A Tyees skated to a 4-4 draw against Vancouver Tuesday in Cranbrook. The result gave Vancouver the semifinal nod via a slender edge in tiebreaking criteria, and the result was even more bitter for the Tyees when Vancouver went on to claim the provincial championship with an 8-0 victory Wednesday over Greater Trail. The KLP Construction bantams finished the tournament with a 1-1-1 record, suffering a one-goal comeback loss to Greater Trail and the tie with Vancouver in what turned out to be the toughest pool in the nine-team competition. Cody Savey scored a pair of thirdperiod goals as the Tyees rallied from a 3-1 deficit to earn the tie. But Vancouver got the semifinal nod with a higher goal average for the tournament, outscoring its opponents 19-12 while Campbell River held an 18-13 differential. River Fahey added a goal for the

Tyees in the tie. The bantams opened the tourney Sunday with a bitter, 6-5 loss to Greater Trail, which went on to claim the top seed in the pool. Savey and Jalen Price had two goals each as the Tyees took a 5-4 lead in the third period, only to fall on the strength of two late goals by Brad Ross. Campbell River rebounded with a 9-3 romp over Prince George Monday, with Price netting four goals and Nolan Corrado adding four assists in the win. Campbell River’s peewee A Tyees, meanwhile, suffered a pair of heartbreaking, one-goal losses in the Tier 2 provincial championships in Prince George and fell short of a berth in the playoffs. The No. 1 Auto Body Tyees opened the tourney with a 3-2 loss to Penticton Monday, then closed out pool play with a 6-5 loss to Greater Trail Wednesday morning. In between, the Tyees were overwhelmed 13-2 by Burnaby Winter Club and finished 0-3 in pool play.

up in the corner, skated into the left faceoff circle, and drilled a low shot between the pads of Victoria goaltender Grant Payne. “It’s an unbelievable feeling, especially after a long game like that,” said the 18-year-old rookie from Kelowna, “The puck was down low and I picked it up off the wall – they gave me some space so I came out of the corner and fired it, fivehole. I was falling over at the time and just tried to get it on net.” Storm head coach Lee Stone said the winning goal couldn’t have gone to a more deserving player. “What can you say about Kobe? Here’s a kid that was on our fourth line for a good chunk of the season. He played all three forward positions for us and we even had him on defense earlier in the year. He’s done everything we’ve asked of him, never complained, and now comes through with the winner in overtime. Not only is he producing at a point-

per-game clip but he’s also helping shut down their top line.” Campbell River built up a 2-0 second period lead on a pair of power play goals by red-hot Dane Feeney, his ninth and tenth of the postseason. However, Devin MacKey got one back for the Cougars before the end of the second, and then tied it six minutes into the third on a shot that dribbled in past Storm netminder Riley Welyk. Both teams had glorious chances in overtime, including power play opportunities, but couldn’t score. Welyk stopped Victoria’s Brett Lervold on a breakaway just before Oishi ended it. Campbell River outshot Victoria 35-23. “It’s a great series, Junior ‘A’ calibre hockey,” c o m m e nt e d S t o r m defenseman Nathan Browne, “We’re only two games in but it feels like a marathon already. They (Victoria) are a veteran team, they’ve been to the finals before, and they know how to win.

We’re getting used to it. I think we can play a little more physical – give it back to them – and that will create more scoring chances.” Coach Stone expects more of the same as the series continues. “All the games (in this series) are going to be tight,” he said, “We could be down two games just as easily as we’re up two. We’re playing against a very experienced team but so far we’ve managed to find a way to win. There’s no question we’re thrilled to be ahead, but at the end of the day, two games doesn’t win you anything – we need four.” The Storm welcomed back versatile forward Gavin Rauser to the line-up after missing six weeks due to injury, but played without veterans Zack Sanderson and Will McNamara. Both sat out with undisclosed ailments. Game 3 took place last night in Victoria, while Game 4 is scheduled for tonight in Campbell River. Puck drop is at 7:30.

Ticks and Humans in British Columbia There are more than 20 species of ticks in British Columbia, but only three species normally bite humans. Although the bites may sometimes be painful and slow healing, there is little danger of disease provided they are removed promptly. Adult ticks are distinguished from insects

by having eight legs rather than six. They cannot jump or fly and do not drop from trees. Ticks require blood as a source of protein for egg development. A few simple precautions outlined below, will decrease the likelihood of tick bites. The Western Black-legged

It occurs on vegetation in warm, moist areas on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and along the mainland coast between the United States border and Powell River. The red and black females and smaller black males attach to humans, deer, cats and dogs, becoming grey and bean-like in size as they feed. The bite is often painful and may result in a slow-healing ulcer. This tick does not cause paralysis; however, it is a carrier of the

The organism which causes Lyme Disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, has been found in ticks collected from many areas of B.C., and health authorities now believe that Lyme Disease carrying ticks may be present throughout the province. For more information on Lyme Disease, see the B.C. Centre for Disease Control web site.

and large animals such as deer, cattle, dogs, sheep and humans serve as the host for the last feeding. This tick is most frequently encountered between March and June, usually in open, rocky areas. The adult female is reddish-brown with a white "shield" near the front, and the similarly sized male is mottled-grey in colour. Both sexes "quest" for hosts

The Rocky Mountain Wood Tick (Dermacentor andersoni) In British Columbia, this tick occurs in the interior dry belt from the United States border north as far as Williams Lake and eastward into Alberta. It is not found west of the Coast Range mountains. The Rocky Mountain wood tick is a three-host tick, a new host being sought for each one of its three feedings which occur over a period of 1 to 3 years. Usually rodents and other small animals serve for the first two feedings,

by waiting near the top of grass and low shrubs, readily attaching to passing humans or animals that brush against them. Once on a host they climb upwards, giving rise to the erroneous observation that they have dropped from trees. If the quest is unsuccessful, the ticks return to the ground until the next spring. Ticks successful in finding a host attach their mouthparts to the skin by means of a rapidly hardening cement. Feeding females quickly increase in size, excreting a mass of black bloodwaste during the process. When they reach the size of a swollen raisin they drop to the ground and, after several weeks, lays a few thousand eggs and dies. Although the Rocky Mountain wood tick is a known carrier of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and Colorado tick fever in the United States, these diseases rarely occur in Canada. However, in British Columbia this tick causes a disease in man and animals

called tick paralysis. The disease is characterized by increasing uncoordination and eventual collapse. The first symptoms, usually a numbness in the feet and legs causing difficulty in walking and standing, occur after a female tick has been feeding for about 5 days. The hands and arms are usually affected next and there is often partial paralysis of the throat and tongue muscles, resulting in difficulty swallowing and speaking. There is little pain and usually no fever. Complete recovery occurs when the tick is removed if paralysis has not progressed too far, but death may occur if the tick is overlooked. There is no known antidote for tick paralysis. The nature of the toxin, likely secreted by the female during feeding, is not known. Other Ticks Many other British Columbia ticks feed only on a narrow range of hosts such as squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs and birds. Probably the one most commonly encountered by man is the winter tick. It feeds on moose, deer, horses and cattle during the winter but, while it may brush off onto humans, it will not feed on man. The brown dog tick is a reddish-brown species that attacks dogs, usually feeding around the ears and between the toes. It rarely feeds on humans. This species may be found around cracks and baseboards in homes after dropping off a dog.

by a tick, please report them to your family doctor immediately. Tell your doctor when and where you were bitten by a tick. If possible, keep any removed ticks and take them to your doctor who may need to have the ticks identified. Ticks can be stored in any sealed container in a fridge or freezer. 1. General symptoms of fever headache, muscle and joint pains, fatigue or weakness of the muscles of the face. Life cycle of a tick.

Removal of Attached Ticks Many methods have been developed over the years for removing feeding ticks which connect themselves to their host with small, barbed mouthparts. Ticks do not burrow under the skin. A number of the more drastic techniques such as using a hot cigarette, gasoline, or hot matches to induce the tick to detach itself are unreliable and may cause injury to the person involved. Ticks are most safely and effectively removed by a slow and gentle pull without twisting, using tweezers or fingers. This will normally remove the tick with the mouthparts attached. The wound should be treated with an antiseptic. See the BC Center for Disease control web site for further information on removal of ticks. Personal Protection The following precautions will decrease the likelihood of tick attachment. 1. Wear high boots or tuck

pant cuffs into socks. Tuck shirt into pants. Do not wear short pants. Application of commercial insect repellents containing diethyl toluamide (DEET) to the pants may assist in repelling ticks. 2. If possible, avoid game trails or old roads overgrown or closely lined with vegetation. Tick levels may be high in areas frequented by animals. 3. When resting, sit on a bare rock, a ground sheet, or a vegetation-free area instead of stretching out on vegetation. 4. Make daily examinations for ticks, paying particular attention to the pubic region, the base of the skull, and the scalp. Check the backs of everyone in the group and carefully inspect any children. Clothes should be closely examined for ticks, especially near the collar, after they have been hanging overnight. If you have the following symptoms within days or weeks after being bitten

Spring is here!

2. Skin rash, especially one that looks like a "Bull's Eye". It may or may not be where the bite was. 3. In some cases paralysis may occur. The paralysis usually starts in the feet and legs and gradually works its way up to the upper body, arms and head. This paralysis can develop from within a few hours to several days. Area Tick Control Elimination of ticks over large areas is not feasible. However, it is possible to

significantly reduce the probability of tick attacks in parks and resorts by concentrating control efforts on walks and trails. Insecticides applied to the ground and vegetation a few feet on either side of a trail may result in season-long control as ticks do not move far. Removal of brush and other vegetation may also reduce the number of ticks along trails or in picnic areas.

MANAGING YOUR MONEY 4x10 Improve your tax-savings fitness – the child fitness tax credit. Ken Garraway CFP

Senior Financial Consultant

No matter how physically fit you are, tax time can have you running to exhaustion looking for ways to save on taxes. Common tax credit and tax deductions Canadian might consider are – the spousal/eligible dependant federal credit, medical expenses and charitable donations credit, public transit federal credit – but one that may have escaped your consideration is the Child Fitness Tax Credit, and if you’re eligible for it, there are some tax savings to be had. Here’s how it works: • The Child Fitness Tax Credit may be claimed by a parent for each child under 16 years of age at the beginning of a calendar year (or under 18, if the child is disabled). • The credit may be claimed by either parent but the total credit must not exceed the maximum allowable amount. • Beginning with the 2014

tax year, the federal credit may be claimed on the first $1,000 of eligible costs. The tax credit is calculated using the lowest federal tax rate of 15%, so the maximum federal tax credit per child for 2014 would be $150.00.

Investors Group• • Eligible costs include fees paid for administration, instruction and facilities rentals. Travel, food or costs deducted as child care expenses are not eligible. Costs must be paid to someone who offers physical activity programs that are not a part of a school curriculum and generally where more than 50% of the activities offered to children include a significant amount of physical activity. The child’s program must contribute to their cardiorespiratory endurance and contribute to at least one of the following: muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility or balance. • The eligibility rules

include activities such as water skiing and horseback riding and exclude snowmobile riding. For the 2014 tax year and prior tax years, the federal credit may be used only to reduce federal tax that otherwise would be payable. Beginning in 2015, this will become a refundable tax credit.

• Depending on your province of residence, parents may also be eligible for an additional provincial child fitness credit. By running after all your eligible tax credits – including the Child Fitness Tax Credit – you’ll definitely reduce your tax bill – but to be sure your total financial life is as fit as it can be, talk to your professional advisor. The all-electric sedan, which is also the prize car provided by the Scrap-It program for our Plug-In to Win contest, will glide silently from the Vancouver International Auto Show in downtown Vancouver next Wednesday. The route, devised by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, will then take the participating 19 eco-friendly vehicles to Victoria via the Nanaimo ferry. On Thursday, the vehicles will be put through their paces on a handling course in Langford to see how versatile they are. The EcoRun concludes that evening in Vancouver. In addition to pure electric vehicles, the Eco-Run

To celebrate World Water Day, the Council of Canadians Campbell River chapter and Timberline Earth Club are co-sponsoring a public film screening of White Water, Black Gold. This event will take place on Monday, March 23, at 7 p.m. at North Island College Theater, 1681 S. Dogwood Street. Admission is by donation. White Water, Black Gold is an investigative documentary that follows mountaineer and hiking guide David Lavallee on his threeyear journey from the ice fields of northern Canada downstream to the oilfields of Alberta. This film draws attention to the untold costs — to water and people — associated with developing the second-largest deposit of oil in the world. NORMA DOROTHEA PENN LEWIS September 19, 1922 – March 14, 2015

Norma knew loved ones were waiting for her, so when the time came, God called her home to that place He had prepared especially for her. She was born in Winnipeg, MB, the only child of Anne and Harold Williams. Her father died when she was young so she grew up in a houseful of aunties and a Granny who looked after any children who were in the house. Her beloved Granny held a frightened, little girl in her lap telling her stories of Jesus in German. She took her nurse’s training at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Winnipeg. It was while she was nursing Earl’s mother that they met. They were married 66 years before Earl passed on. When Earl decided to enter the ministry, she went back to private duty nursing full time. She was well thought of as a nurse, taking time to rub patients’ backs, delivering babies who were in a hurry to be born, or sitting with the dying. Norma was dedicated to her church. Her faith was a simple one – she loved Jesus, period. She played the organ\piano in the many places where she and Earl lived – Lanigan, Regina, North Vancouver. Norma was also dedicated to her family. She was a loving caregiver to Earl, daughter Georgia, and the aunties. Even though the family could ill afford it, she made sure Georgia had piano lessons. She loved parties though sherry was usually the strongest drink that could be had unless Earl intervened. And the only time I ever heard her curse was once when we were playing cards. But anyone who was by themselves in times of crisis or at special times in the year were made welcome in their home. It is with the knowledge that she knew of the wonderful place she was going that I can let her go – not easily, but in comfort. She loved her son-in-law Tony, and especially her grandchildren Amara, Alan and Alison, and great-grandson, Kody. Many thanks to New Horizons staff who became like family to her and to us, to York, the PADS dog who also brought her comfort and joy, to dear, dear friends who supported her and us, and prayed for us on this journey. Flowers gratefully declined. We would ask that donations be given in Norma’s name to Canadian Lutheran World Relief or the Primates World Development Relief Fund or donations to support York, the PADS dog at New Horizons. (Please talk to Georgia or Tony on how donations to York can be done.) A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm, Saturday, March 28th, 2015 at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Campbell River, with the Reverend Blair Haggart officiating.
