Work of a watery weekend
Cranbrook city crews scrambled as pipes burst
TRE VOR CR AWLEY
A RNE P E TRYS HEN
Over the weekend, Cranbrook Public Works crews went into emergency mode as a number of pipes burst all over the south side of Cranbrook. The bursts happened late Saturday night and into Sunday morning. By Sunday night all but two of the leaks were fixed and by Monday morning they were all patched. On Wednesday Joe McGowan, director of Public Works, allowed this reporter to sit down with three of the water works crew that helped patch up Cranbrook’s leaking pipes and get residents’ water back up and running as fast as possible. They are Bruce Benson, senior utility operator, Jason Perrault, foreman, and Kent Keiver, lead hand. At 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night, there was a malfunction at Pressure Reducing Station no. 4. Each Pressure Reducing Station has a pilot control — miniature pressure valves. One of the components failed and caused over pressurization to that zone which caused the eight water main breaks. “There is a surge relief that doesn’t allow the valve to open up fully,” noted Perrault. “If that failed we’d have been even worse off.” The pressure reached 20 psi higher than the normal levels. But it was that sudden rush that found the weakest parts of the system at that time. Pressure Reducing Station 4 usually has a discharge pressure of 54 psi. McGowan said that water mains are designed to have a normal working pressure of 150 psi, with Perrault adding that they are usually tested at up to three times that. The first break was recorded at around 3:30 a.m. Benson said there were two

As the leaks surfaced, they had to decide whether they would shut them off right away — if they were in danger of flooding the neighbourhood with gush-
ing water — or throttle the pipes down to keep them on until crews got there to fix the leaks. At around 6:30 a.m. crews started to arrive, including contractors. Benson said they had about 20
workers in total out or headed out by then. Benson made the calls to locate the gas line, electrical and telephone lines — so crews could work around those lines. Six of the breaks were
fixed on Sunday. The last two breaks were not finished, so on one block crews fed hoses overhead so the houses could have water overnight.

If all goes according to plan, Telus is hoping to have the first homes in Kimberley installed with fibre optic broadband Internet by June. Announced at the end of February, Telus staff has been working alongside Kimberley city staff and council to get the proper planning in place before beginning the process of connecting each home to fibre optic. Telus has made a $10.5 million investment into the community—without any government subsidization—in order to get the project off the ground. Zouheir Mansourati, Vice President of Broadband Implementation with Telus, said Kimberley is a test run of sorts to understand and work with the challenges of getting broadband into smaller, rural communities. “We felt at this point, with the [Tier] Three communities where there was a meaningful lack of broadband, access to the internet and to services that are very useful, we felt that we could come and practice what we need to do, strengthen our muscles, our knowledge and draw some lessons,” Mansourati. The process began last year as Telus began the consultation process with the community, according to Mansourati. That process is now over and it’s now time to go door-todoor to install the fibre optic cable. Mansourati said that contractors will request permission from each and every home and business to install the fibre optic cable drop. The work will be done for free and home or business owners can make the decision whether or not they wish to connect to the fibre optic network or keep their existing internet services.

Crews battle to fix burst pipes on wet weekend Continued from page 1 The other leak was throttled down. “So nobody was without water Sunday overnight,” Benson said. “Then we repaired the two on Monday morning.” Some of the workers had worked up to 20 hours that day, with most working 16 hours. The event was a rare occurrence, and they hope it’s not something that will occur again any time soon. Most of the main lines are between seven to ten feet below the ground, so it took time for the water to make it’s way to the top. Benson said it isn’t difficult to spot a leak. “Usually water is pouring down the road like a river for the big ones,” he said. “Little ones people usually say they can hear the noise in the house. The big ones can do a lot of damage in a short amount of time. You get a big two, three, four inch hole, you gotta get to them as quick as you can to try to shut them down.” They also try to keep a positive pressure on the lines when they are digging a leak, that keeps the mud and dirt from entering into the pipe and contaminating the water. Benson worked to pull everyone together. He called companies such as Fortis BC to find out where the hydro lines, natural gas and other infrastructure was buried. They had to bring in five truck drivers and one machine operator. Kent Keiver was the lead hand out on the field. Keiver said he prioritized the breaks from most pressing to least. “Basically we just
went from an area that had two or three in one area, so I wasn’t criss-crossing back and forth across town,” he said. “The ones that were out of water of course, we had to deal with them first.” There were breaks on 5th Avenue South, 3rd Avenue, 2A Street, 9th Street, 20th Avenue, 3rd Street and Brookview Crescent. Perrault explained why the breaks happened in one specific area of town. “We have five district metered areas — so pressure zones,” Perrault said, adding that the majority of the breaks happened in one pressure zone. “So you can see in this pressure zone you have PR4 (Pressure Reducing Station 4), which was the problem — that’s the one that over pressurized. Also PR3 feeds that whole zone.” So when one station over pressurized, the other shut down and all of the flow was going through the one area, he said. “That’s why they are all contained in this general area, instead of down in the valley, or the college area, or up higher,” he said. Cranbrook has 13 pressure reducing stations. The station reduce the pressure that builds up as the water moves downhill. “Water pressure is a function of elevation,” McGowan explained. “At the top of a hill, water pressure is minimal. At the bottom of a hill the pressure is greater, because you calculate pressure based on the weight of the water. The further down you are, the lower elevations of the pressure zones, is the area you would expect to see failures.”

Fibre-optics coming to Kimberley
Continued from page 1
Fibre optic technology will be installed alongside existing cable connections paths either aerially or buried below ground. “All this is done at no cost to the customer. In other terms, we build the service, we ask for their permission to do a fibre drop, we do the fibre drop, then there’s no obligation for them to buy the service,” said Mansourati. “If later they come and they request the service and we offer it and install it for them. That service would be any of: voice, internet access or Optik
TV service or all three of them.” Kimberley has been divided up into what Mansourati describes as 13 fibre-serving areas (FSA)—the first of which should be completed by June with September as a completion date for all the rest. The Federal government’s definition of high speed internet starts at five megabits per second (MBps). The fibre-optic service provided by Telus will allow for over 100 MBps, depending on what services customers ask for, said Mansourati, which is comparable to speeds more readily available in major cities.
When it comes to broadband, internet is the first thing that comes to mind, but it’s more than just connectivity. Watching TV in standard definition requires about 3-4 MBps. High-definition channels require 5-6 MBps, while Ultra High-definition—or 4K— channels require 20-25 MBps. Kimberley mayor Don McCormick notes that the addition of fibre-optic technology to Kimberley is a huge win for local businesses. “This announcement means that Kimberley is just a handful of rural communities that can boast the same inter-
net speeds as major cities,” said McCormick. “To us we see that as more than just a convenience, we see that as a competitive advantage to business owners in town that want to combine lifestyle along with the business opportunities and we’re seeing more and more of those types of individuals moving out to the East Kootenays and other rural areas.” For more information on fibre optic technology and to register for progress updates, please visit TELUS.com/kimberley or call 1-855-595-5588.
March 21 is World Poetry Day Arne Pe tryshen
On March 21, Cranbrook will be celebrating World Poetry Day along with the other municipalities in Canada. Acting Mayor Wesly Graham proclaimed March 21 to be World Poetry Day and the month of April to be National Poetry Month. Each year for the past three
years, the City of Regina’s mayor has issued a challenge for other municipalities to participate in the Mayor’s Poetry City Challenge. This year, Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi was handed the torch to continue the challenge. Nenshi sent a letter to council. “The purpose of the Challenge is to recognize both UN-
ESCO’s World Poetry Day on March 21 as well as National Poetry Month, which is celebrated in Canada and the United States for the month of April,” Nenshi wrote. “Last year, 45 communities from Whitehorse and Dawson City to Victoria and St. John’s took part. Fifty established, emerging and student poets were recog-
nized.” Nenshi said the challenge he was putting forward was to have a local poet read a poem at the start of a council meeting in March or April. Nenshi said Calgary council had declared March 21 as World Poetry Day and April as National Poetry Month.

an anti-terrorism bill that is currently being proposed by the Conservative government. Critics of the bill believe it hands too much power to government authorities and has vague and ambiguous language that can be used beyond the scope of anti-terrorism. Responding to the criticism of the bill, Wilks, as a former RCMP officer, said the most important part of the bill is the information-sharing aspect of it. “Most people won’t realize that CSIS, RCMP, CBSA—all of those agencies don’t share information and never have. “This bill allows them to share information on individuals or an individual of interest and allows for a better flow of information.” Drawing on his former career, Wilks said he’s authored affidavits for wiretaps and warrants. “It’s no walk in the park. It’s a long, arduous process that is extremely vetted and scrutinized by a Supreme Court justice and they ensure that every (i) is dotted and every (t) is crossed,”

Wilks said. “And if it isn’t, you don’t get your warrant. Or you don’t get your wiretap. It’s just that simple.” He encourages people to read the bill itself to understand how it is applied. “It says at the bottom of Section Two, for better certainty, it doesn’t not include lawful advocacy, protest, dissent and artistic expression. It’s pretty clear to me, maybe it’s not clear to other people, but it’s pretty clear to me that it means if you want to have a lawful protest, you may. “And there’s nothing wrong with that.” On overcoming addiction Wilks recently opened up a more personal side in the House of Commons, acknowl-
edging his past addiction with alcohol and the recent work that came out of a summit from the Canadian Centre for Substance Abuse at the end of January. “Mr. Speaker, I bring this to your attention because just over 26 years ago, I took my last drink,” said Wilks, in his statement. “My life had spiralled out of control. But by the grace of God, I stand before you and all Canadians to give hope to all those who still suffer with addiction, that they can find a path which will provide them with a daily reprieve from their addiction. “Today, I can tell you that I would not trade my best day drunk for my worst day sober. Today I reach my hand out to help anyone in need, rather than pushing them away.” Wilks said he made
his statement because it was important to him and although he wished to make it closer to the CCSA summit date of January 27-28, it wasn’t his allotted time to make a statement. Wilks noted that recovery from any addiction is a long hard road, but he doesn’t agree with programs like Insite, covered under legislation from Bill C-2. “I don’t think it’s a wise idea to be looking at safe injection sites across Canada when the fact of the matter is that those addicted to drugs and alcohol for that matter, opening these sites enables them to continue to do what they want to do,” Wilks said. “We shouldn’t be enabling them. We should be encouraging them into recovery, not enabling them to continue with the drug of choice.”

He was working in what is now Iraq, excavating ruins of the ancient city of Nineveh (this was December of 1853). Born and raised in the area, Rassam was expert as to what part of the vast desert was most likely to produce archaeological gold. One mound in particular had caught his attention; his intuition telling him it would be a major find. There was only one problem: the site in question belonged to the French. Ignoring the fact that the country was run by the Ottoman Empire, England and France had divided up amongst themselves which parts of Mesopotamia they would excavate. This agreement wasn’t the result of cooperation between the two. Competition between the British Museum and the Louvre had sparked ferocious competition and vicious rivalries. There was one small catch in their agreement. If an archaeologist tripped over something in land belonging to a competing country, the site would then belong to the finding country. Of course “tripped over” didn’t mean digging. This is why Rassam was working at night. His hunch paid off, and just as the sun crept up on them, Rassam’s men had uncovered the top of a marble wall. Much to France’s irritation, the site now belonged to England. Actually, Rassam’s hunch was more than right, as he had discovered the lost palace of Ashurbanipal, Assyria’s greatest and last king. Ashurbanipal ruled sometime in the mid 7th century BC. Nineveh was destroyed in 612 by the Babylo-

Mike Selby nians, who levelled the king’s palace with battering rams. Time and sand had preserved much, and Rassam excavated all manner of intact sculptures, stone carvings, massive halls made of alabaster and roads paved in marble. There was so many amazing artifacts that various rooms filled with nothing more than clay tablets were at first all but ignored. When the British did get around to examining the clay tablets, they realized Rassam had not only uncovered the greatest ancient library in known existence, but possibly also the very first library known to man (what we would recognize as a library in the modern sense). For all his military bearing, Ashurbanipal was an avid reader. Under his rule he sent scribes out to the ends of the known world to collect as many books in as many languages as could be found. Rassam and his men discovered 30,000 clay tablets, so in all probability there may have been more. Although royal and private libraries existed long before Ashurbanipal, in reality these were simple book collections and / or archives. Few if any had the scale or scope of Assyria’s last king — none had his classification system. Each tablet in the library was stored in clay jars. These jars were methodically organized neatly on shelfs. Each tablet also had its very own call number, which indicated which room, shelf, and jar it belonged to. Each room had a shelf list carved into one of its walls, and each room had a catalog beside their respective entranceways. These catalogs not only arranged where each
book title could be found, but also how many tablets the book contained, how many lines on each tablet, opening words or phrases, and what subject the work is about. Subject headings included biology, history, poetry, mythology, geography, astrology, biography, mathematics, natural sciences, medicine, taxes, laws, and religion (which was further subdivided into prayers, rituals, and chants). Ashurbanipal’s library may also be the very first library as it appears it was open for use. Some of the subject catalogs are difficult to read as they have been worn out from constant handling. One of the oddest books found there appeared to be the Hebrew story of Noah’s ark. But not quite, as it was written in a poetic meter, and all the names were wrong. This book turned out to be ‘The Epic of Gilgamesh,’ one of the oldest stories on the planet. Today, Ashurbanipal’s Library remains open to the public. Besides his palace treasures, 20,000 clay tablets can be viewed at the British Museum. ‘The Epic of Gilgamesh’ is also still around—the Cranbrook Public Library has five separate versions of it.

Local Music for Young Children students and MYC graduates of Wendy Guimont debuted their bright yellow Kids Helping Kids T-shirts at their winter recital held recently in Cranbrook. All the performers are participating in a province-wide fundraiser for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. MYC students and graduates will be collecting money for the “Practice Makes Cents” event, by asking for sponsors to pledge a few cents for every minute they practice the piano during a specific two week period in March and April. Wendy Guimont, the provincial coordinator of 112 MYC teachers, recently distributed 1,910

bright yellow T-shirts to each of the participating students to kick start the Kids Helping Kids campaign. “March 7, 2015 marks the 35th birthday of the Music for Young Children program,” Guimont explained. “Our main objective is to share the happy habit of learning music with our students, but this year we also wanted to provide the opportunity for them to help others with their efforts. Since this is a significant anniversary for our Canadian music program, we decided to celebrate by earning money for sick kids at the BCCH in Vancouver, “Our students will benefit with the extra piano time and it is all in support of such a great

Nature Doesn’t Need People L
ast week, as I was writing about the environmental degradation caused by the K–cups, I stumbled across a number of videos produced by Conservation International called “Nature is Speaking” (natureisspeaking.org/). Each of these videos are about a minute and a half long. In each one, an actor assumes the voice of a single aspect of nature and talks about what is happening to the natural world as a result of our greed and wasteful over–consumption. Each video features spectacular photography, and a script which draws us in from the very beginning. In the first video, Julia Roberts is Mother Nature. She begins, “Some call me nature. Others call me Mother Nature. I’ve been here for over 4½ billion years—22,500 times longer than you. I don’t really need people, but people need me. Your future depends on me. When I thrive, you thrive. When I falter, you falter…or worse.” The video continues with the message that nature will continue despite our best efforts to destroy it. “How you choose to live each day, whether you regard or disregard me doesn’t really matter to me. One way or the other, your actions will determine your fate, not mine. I am nature. I will go on. I am prepared to evolve. Are you?” Each of the videos ends with the words, “Nature doesn’t need people. People need nature.” It is a powerful warning to us about the consequences of our failure to recognize that we live in an interconnected web of life with all of creation. Each of these videos reminds us that in comparison with the power of nature, we are so infinitely small. We may think that we are in charge … but really we are not.
The series continues with Harrison Ford as the Ocean. “One way or another, every living thing needs me … I give, they take; but I can always take back. That’s just the way it’s always been. It’s not their planet anyway. Never was. Never will be. But humans, they take more than their share.” It ends, “If nature isn’t kept healthy, humans won’t survive. Simple as that!” Kevin Spacey is the Rain Forest. In a humorous aside, the rain forest reflects that “humans are so smart … so smart. Such big brains—and opposable thumbs. They know how to things—amazing Rev. Yme make things. Now why would they Woensdregt need an old forest like me?” And the answer comes, “They do breathe air, and I make air. Have they thought about that? Humans! So smart! They’ll figure it out. Humans making air. Now that would be fun to watch!” Edward Norton is Soil. “Without me, humans could not exist; but you treat me like dirt.” Penelope Cruz is Water, and Lupita Nyong’o is Flower. “Yes, I’m beautiful, I’ve heard it before and it never grows old. I’m worshipped for my looks, my scent. But here’s the thing. Life starts with me. You see, I feed people. Every fruit comes from me; every potato, me…” It ends, “In my experience, people underestimate the power of the pretty little flower … because their life does start with me … and it can end without me.” Ian Somerhalder is the Coral Reef, and Robert Redford is the Redwood. “I’ve been around forever … and then all of a sudden there were humans, and all hell broke loose. They changed wolves into dogs, rivers into lakes, and us into wood. They started using the planet as if it were put there just for them, acting like they’ve got an extra one laying around some-
where.” This is just a taste of the wonderful material in these videos. I can’t begin to do them justice. The purpose of Conservation International—what they call their “Humanifesto”—is as follows. “Human beings are part of nature. Nature is not dependent on human beings to exist. Human beings, on the other hand, are totally dependent on nature to exist. The growing number of people on the planet and how we live here is going to determine the future of nature. And the future of us. “Nature will go on, no matter what. It will evolve. The question is, will it be with us or without us? If nature could talk, it would probably say it doesn’t matter much either way. “We must understand that there are aspects of how our planet evolves that are totally out of our control. But there are things we can manage, control and do responsibly that will allow us and the planet to evolve together. “We are Conservation International and we need your help. Our movement is dedicated to managing those things we can control. Better. Country by country. Business by business. Human by human. “We are not about us vs them. It doesn’t matter if you’re an American, a Canadian, or a Papua New Guinean. You don’t even have to be particularly fond of the ocean or have a soft spot for elephants. This is simply about all of us coming together to do what needs to be done. “Because is we don’t, nature will continue to evolve. Without us.” It’s powerful stuff. Check it out. Spend 15 minutes one day at www.natureisspeaking.org. Nature—and us—is worth at least that much time. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglincan in Cranbrook

hinatown — in 1899 it was little more than a handful of shacks and a couple of laundries along Van Horne Street, across from the CPR station. By 1904, it was a jam-packed community: houses, stores, restaurants, apartments, gambling dens and opium joints, all tightly bordered by the industrial district of 7th Avenue, the red light district of 6th Avenue and the CPR housing of 5th to 3rd Avenues. Within a block or two stood the Cranbrook business district, the churches, the theatres and the hotels. It was a tightly knit downtown community all-in-all; perhaps too tight. By 1914, many in Cranbrook were exceedingly unhappy with the presence of both the Chinese and their ramshackle townwithin-a-town. The fear of Chinatown burning and taking the entire town with it certainly played a part, as did sanitation and the fear of disease. Cranbrook had constructed water and sewer works in the years following incorporation in 1905, but Chinatown was not part of the programme and conditions there left much to be desired. Still, for all the worry and complaining, there was little change in the ensuing years. Opium, the drug of choice among Chinese and whites alike, was readily available both before and after it was deemed illegal in 1908. The Herald newspaper of April 2, 1914, states that a police raid in Chinatown brought four Chinese men to court for the possession of opium. It was, surprisingly, the first case of its kind in Cranbrook. The judge was lenient and handed down $10 fines. Not so, one month later, when one of the culprits reappeared and was fined $100. From then on police raids in Chinatown became a common occurrence. Local police constable Archie Herrigan certainly went above and beyond the call of duty in June, 1914, when he scaled a nearby telegraph pole to enter a Chinese dwelling thereby catching Mah Sing in the act of smoking the forbidden drug. Crime aside, over the ensuing years many law-abiding Chinese made gradual social

The former Chinese Masonic Hall at 37–7th Avenue, S., is the last reminder of the community that was once Chinatown. Photo Cameron, March, 2015 and economic headway into the community. Chinese businesses appeared on 8th Avenue and then eastward to 9th and 10th. When residents of 8th Avenue raised a petition in 1914 to protest against the erection of a neighbouring residence by two Chinese males, city council advised that it had no authority to stop construction; the Chinese were free to build where they wished. Many of the Chinese, through diligence, hard work and thrift, had money to spend and gradually improved their lot by moving out of Chinatown altogether. Still, Chinatown remained. The Chinese community took a large step forward in November 7, 1920, when a Chinese Mission was opened on 7th Avenue, with support from the nearby Methodist church. There were now over 500 Chinese residing in and about Cranbrook and the Mission provided spiritual, practical and medical aid. The renovated two-story building included a large meeting hall, a kitchen and five bedrooms and was met with general approval throughout the city. New government legislation dictating working hours in laundries lessened the long-running antagonism that had flourished for years between white and Chinese laundry workers and, although some restaurants still advertised “White only,” there was a noticeable community shift towards the acceptance of
the Chinese. A Herald newspaper editorial in May, 1920, stated: “The Chinese are easy to please, complain rarely and have a high sense of honour. They will gamble till the cows come home and their ways are peculiar but they are scrupulously honest … The Chinese is not work shy, never was and probably never will be.” It was a far cry from the “yellow devil” branding of earlier years. January, 1921, saw the formation of a local chapter of the Chinese Nationalist League whose doctrines included the maintenance of political unity in China, the expansion of local self-government and the assimilation of race. Within a month local contractors Sainsbury and Ryan took on the job of converting an older, two-storey building on 7th Avenue into the new Chinese Masonic Temple. Though not related in any way to the white Masonic Order, the fellowship between the two lodges did much to aid relations between the east/ west business communities. Police raids in Chinatown continued throughout the 1920s, resulting in numerous opium, gambling and liquor infractions, although, it should be noted, no more so (with the general exception of drugs) than those brought against whites during the period. On the afternoon of July 22, 1931, following an altercation with the renter of a 7th Avenue Chinatown shack owned by
Letters to the Editor
Mah Wee, Charles Chenier lit the shack on fire. A strong southwest breeze quickly fanned the flames as they spread from building to building and, for a time, it seemed as if the entire Cranbrook business district might be lost. Within an hour a number buildings in Chinatown were ablaze and nearby residents prepared to evacuate as spot fires spread throughout the area. Through the aid of an effective waterworks system and every fireman and citizen available, the blaze was finally contained but Chinatown bore the scars. Over the ensuing years both the city and private interests purchased and rebuilt on Chinatown properties, further adding to the decline of the once populous community. Another major blaze in February, 1952, razed the Chinese Masonic Hall, a neighbouring meeting hall and a nearby laundry. The Chinese Masonic Hall was rebuilt in the following months but Chinatown was on a steep decline, disappearing almost entirely by the 1960s. Today, only the former Chinese Masonic Hall remains as a reminder of what was once Chinatown. The Chinese Nationalist League’s hope of assimilation appears to have been realized, the decades of blatant bigotry and confrontation now a forgotten memory. As Confucius says, “Only the wisest and stupidest of men never change.”

First-round fate in the air as Ice & Hitmen go head-to-head Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
The Kootenay Ice head into the final weekend of the WHL regular season with a four-game winning streak on the line and though nothing they can do will impact their final standing, they have a hand to play in determining their firstround playoff opponent. With back-to-back games against a Calgary squad battling for a Central Division title, the Kootenay Ice have an opportunity to squash the Hitmen’s aspirations. “They’re huge. Obviously Calgary is trying to finish first and it’s huge for us because they could potentially be a first-round opponent,” said Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill. “You want to make sure you’re trying to establish the tone in your building. We really just have to worry about ourselves and make sure we’re consistent because when you’re not that way -- if you take these two games for granted or take them lightly -- bad things happen, whether

That race is of the two-horse variety heading into the final weekend of the WHL regular season. As it stands, the Cal-
gary Hitmen (43-22-1-4) hold a one-point edge on the Medicine Hat Tigers (43-23-2-2) for the Central Division crown. While the Hitmen close the regular season against the Ice (37-29-13) this weekend, the Tigers play back-to-back games against the Saskatoon Blades (19-47-22) to wrap up their 72game ledger. A pair of victories over the Ice would serve to guarantee the Hitmen of a Central Division title. Anything less than that and the Tigers have

Through five games head-to-head with the Hitmen this season, the Ice are 3-2-0-0, having won three consecutive contests over their Central Division rivals from Calgary. Dec. 28. It’s safe enough to say the Ice won’t be gift-wrapping two victories for the Calgary Hitmen this weekend. Heading down the stretch, McGill expressed a desire for more consistency from his group. After Wednesday’s win, the Kootenay bench boss believes his group is close. “We’re almost there,”
McGill said. “We’ve just got a few tweaks to work on with some individuals.” The Ice took Thursday away from the rink following Wednesday’s victory. They return to Western Financial Place for Friday’s final regular-season home game with the Hitmen in town to join the part. Speaking of parties, the Kootenay Ice will
honour its outstanding group during the annual team awards ceremony prior to puck drop Friday night. Award presentations are set to begin at 7 p.m. at Western Financial Place with puck to immediately follow. The Ice and Hitmen wrap up the WHL regular season Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Calgary.
Hoffman takes lead at Arnold Palmer Invitational Doug Ferguson Associated Press
ORLANDO, Fla. Morgan Hoffmann’s day began with news that his 97-year-old grandmother died Thursday
morning. It ended with his first lead on the PGA Tour. Hoffman began his round with a 35-foot birdie putt on No. 10 and finished it with a
9-iron that touched the hole before stopping inches away for birdie. He also holed a bunker shot for eagle on the par-5 sixth, leading to a 6-under 66 and a one-

shot lead in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. It all was a lot to chew on for the 25-year-old Hoffmann, who cooks his own meals to eat on the golf course (bison steak was for lunch Thursday). “Mentally, I’m in kind of a weird state right now,” he said. “My grandma passed away this morning, so I’m just pretty chilled out there and loving life right now. Just wish my family the best at home. My whole family texted me and said, ‘Nanny is playing golf with pop up there,’ which was pretty cool.” Hoffmann hopes to attend a memorial service for Dorothy Lionetti in Ft. Lauderdale on Saturday night. It should be a short trip considering Hoffmann pilots his own plane that he recently bought from his buddy David Booth, who plays left wing for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was inspired to be
a pilot after meeting with the tournament host during the Palmer Cup in 2009. Hoffman, clearly, is not the garden variety PGA Tour player. “I have a lot of stuff you guys didn’t ask,” he said with a perfect smile. Not to be forgotten was his golf. He had a one-shot lead over five players, including Ian Poulter and Kevin Na. The group at 68 included Adam Scott, Henrik Stenson and Brandt Snedeker. Rory McIlroy hit 17 greens in regulation in his Bay Hill debut and one-putted only two greens, including a 15foot birdie on the 18th for a 70. McIlroy two-putted from 18 feet for birdie on No. 6, and his lone bogey came with an approach into the water on the par-5 16th. He twirled the club when he saw the splash, though it stayed in his hands.
In his third American event this year, the world’s No. 1 player still hasn’t broken 70. But he’s getting there. “Seeing signs of my game that I like,” McIlroy said. “Another three days of hopefully solid golf and try and get into contention, and that will put me in a good place going into Augusta.” Hoffmann is headed to Augusta National for the first time, courtesy of making the Tour Championship last year on the strength of a pair of top 10s in the FedEx Cup playoffs. He just hasn’t followed up on his finish at the start of this season, with no top 10s in nine tournaments. But after missing the cut at Innisbrook, he spent 12 hours at home in south Florida hitting balls and trying to hit cut shots to stop the aggravating two-way miss. The work appears to be paying off. He missed only two fairways and
four greens, none by a great length. Hoffman, who went to Oklahoma State, first met Palmer at the 2009 Palmer Cup at Cherry Hills. The King shared the importance of a legible autograph (he worked on that) and his affection for flying. Palmer was among the first golfers to fly his own plane and only gave up the controls four years ago. So it felt only fitting that his first lead after any round on tour would come at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. “It’s awesome,” he said. “Arnie has inspired me very heavily since 2009 when I played the Palmer Cup at Cherry Hills, and we talked for about an hour about flying. He’s inspired me to get my pilot’s license and fly myself to tournaments, which I’m now doing. It’s pretty cool, and he’s been a big inspiration in my life.”

The Kimberley Dynamiters open the KIJHL championship series against the Kamloops Storm Saturday night at the Kimberley Civic Centre.
Final frontier
Dynamiters & Storm prepare for KIJHL championship clash Taylor Rocc a
The Kimberley Dynamiters and Kamloops Storm may not have seen one another this season, but with a bestof-seven KIJHL championship on the line, it won’t take long for them to get acquainted. “They’re going to be a good skating team. They look big, probably bigger than us,” said Dynamiters head coach Jerry Bancks Thursday afternoon. “But I’m not going to worry too much about them. I’m more concerned about making sure our guys are prepared to go and that’s what we’ll work on.” The Storm leave Kamloops Friday morning, making the trek to Kimberley to open the KIJHL championship. Game 1 is set for Saturday at the Kimberley Civic Centre at 7 p.m. “We’re very similar to what Kimberley provides,” said Storm general manager Barry Dewar over the phone from Kamloops Thursday. “From what we’ve seen on video, it looks like [the Dynamiters] have speed, pretty good goaltending and pretty good defense. That’s our strength as well. “We’ve got a lot of speed up front and we’re very young…It becomes a matter of who shows up to play, which the case always in the KIJHL. They’re all kids. Sometimes they show up and they’re awesome. Sometimes they don’t show up and they’re not so good. “That can be said for my team and any team in the league, including the Dynamiters.”
Both the Dynamiters and Storm have had to bull through considerable opponents to get to this point, meaning fans in both Kimberley and Kamloops should be in for an electrifying championship series. The Nitros advanced to the KIJHL championship by first dispatching the Creston Valley Thunder Cats in a fivegame Eddie Mountain Division semifinal. From there, the Dynamiters dumped the Fernie Ghostriders in a six-game Eddie Mountain Division finale. Lastly, thet Kimberley Dynamiters worked their way past the Beaver Valley Nitehawks -KIJHL’s defending champions -- to claim the Kootenay Conference championship. As for the Storm, their progression to the KIHJL championship is equally impressive. In their Doug Birks Division semifinal, the Storm earned a 4-1 series victory over the Sicamous Eagles. Kamloops then claimed their divisional title by knocking the 100 Mile House Wranglers out of contention in another fivegame series. Finally, the Storm bounced the KIJHL regular-season champion Osoyoos Coyotes in five games to claim the O kanagan/Shuswap Conference championship. And here we are. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously,” Dewar said. “The division that we’re in is so balanced, so close and so motivated that you lose games in the regu-
lar season that, perhaps, in another division we wouldn’t have lost. “We’ve played extremely well in almost every game. Our biggest difficulty in the beginning was probably goaltending. We went through a couple and we now have a goaltender who seems to be playing extremely well and seems to be a real good acquisition. That’s part of our makeup. We haven’t made any changes other than him.” “Him” being Jacob Mullen, acquired by the Storm from the Grand Forks Border Bruins at the KIJHL trade deadline January. In 11 regular-season games following his acquisition, the 6-foot-4 native of Coeur D’Alene, Id., went 9-2-0 with a 2.10 goals-against average (GAA) and 0.925 save percentage. With the post-season rolling around, Mullen’s numbers have been equally impressive. The 20-year-old puck-stopper is 9-2-0 through the playoffs, with a 2.15 GAA and 0.934 SP, nearly identical numbers to what he registered during his regular season in Kamloops. At the other end of the rink, the presence of Tyson Brouwer (12-2-0, 1.52 GAA, 0.948 SP) adds up to make for what should be, once again, a stellar goaltending duel. It’s no secret the 19-year-old native of Lethbridge has been instrumental to his team’s post-season success. The 5-foot-11 netminder faced an average of 39 shots through the five-game battle
with Beaver Valley, turning aside an average of 36.4 attempts per game. With character kids lining up on both sides of the series, there will be no shortage of storylines when the puck finally drops Saturday night at the Kimberley Civic. Both sides are looking forward to raucous crowds both in Kimberley and back on McArthur Island in Kamloops. “If you want a champion, tell your people in Kimberley and Cranbrook and everywhere else to go out and support them,” Dewar said. “You need to fill that barn.” To this point, the Kimberley Civic Centre has averaged 830 fans in attendance through eight home playoff games, peaking with 1,007 fans for Game 6 of the second round with the Fernie Ghostriders. “One of the keys to our success is the pride that the players feel for what the community does for us and the number of people that show up at our games,” Bancks said. “I’d love to see us well up over 1,000 people Saturday night. We need their help. It’s something that certainly does help our guys. “You hear about it in the room all the time when they’re heading out about how they want to play for the crowd.” Following Games 1 and 2, the series shifts back to Kamloops for Games 3 and 4 (Tuesday and Wednesday). If necessary, the teams return to Kimberley for Game 5 on March 27. Visit dailytownsman. com/kijhl for more.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am a 54-year-old widow living in a large and active retirement community. I am engaged to “Pete,” a 64-yearold man whom I’ve been seeing for a year. We get along very well and have many common interests. Pete has a 20-year-old mentally challenged son living with him, and we also get along fine. (My grown children live in another state.) Pete’s son would live with us after we marry, and I am OK with that. We’ve set a date and even had an engagement party. Now everything is turning into a nightmare. Pete and I have had some heavy makeout sessions, but we have never had sex. He now tells me he cannot “perform.” It doesn’t really matter to me, but he’s turning it into a huge problem. He says that in order to really be married, according to his religion, it has to be consummated, and that because he isn’t capable of doing so, his son should be his stand-in. Pete would be there to make sure everything was completed. I was shocked to say the least. He has told a number of our friends about this, and they think he’s crazy. They also think I’m crazy to still be with him. He says if I love him it won’t matter and that it is only a one-time thing. Pete says this is “nonnegotiable.” I don’t want anything to do with it, but if I marry Pete, all of our friends will think I slept with his son, even if I haven’t. If I’d known this before we got engaged, I never would have agreed to marry him. I am in good health and do not need him financially. What do I do? -- Upset in N.Y.C. Dear Upset: Leave. Now. The reason various religions expect marriages to be consummated is to produce children. You are not going to do that, so Pete’s request is completely unreasonable. If he wants his son to have a sexual experience, he can hire a professional. But you ought to get away from this nuttiness while you still can. We guarantee it won’t be the last crazy demand he makes. Dear Annie: I know there are free and low-cost options for people who need counseling for depression. Do you know of any such resources for couples who could use a marriage tune-up but don’t have much money? -- Daisy Dear Daisy: First check with your local YMCA or YWCA, as well as university counseling centers and your place of worship. Your county, state or city is likely to offer free or low-cost family counseling, which usually includes marriage counseling, and you may be eligible for those services. You also can look online to see whether there are community counseling centers in your area. Worldwide Marriage Encounter (wwme.org) for Catholic couples is free, and there are other Marriage Encounter programs that are not faith-based and often operate on a small donation. Every marriage could use a “tuneup” now and then. Good luck. Dear Annie: As the wife of a prostate cancer survivor, I want to expand on your answer to “Missing It.” Prostate cancer is a couple’s disease because it affects the sexual relationship. Here are my ideas to improve the situation: Buy pads instead of diapers. (They are available for men, but women’s pads will work, too.) A guy feels more like a guy in his own underwear. He should do Kegel exercises. Join a gym and work out together. Exercise is a mood elevator, and strong core muscles help with incontinence. Find a prostate cancer support group and attend as a couple. Shower together since it won’t matter if he leaks in the shower, and soapy rubdowns can lead to other things. Research penile pumps, injections, implants and medications to relieve ED. Be creative in the bedroom. And finally, if your doctor is not supportive, find another. -- Love My Husband Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. UGH!
Ryan Randell Tapp 1986 - 2015
On March 8th, 2015, the world exhaled as a great source of positive energy and light left it behind. We bid “Farewell to Ryan Randell Tapp following a tragic fire. Though physically at rest, we are confident that Ryan’s adventurous spirit is busy touching and tasting every corner of the universe!
Wildly ambitious, Ryan was a talented and accomplished musician and composer, and founded, owned, and operated multiple businesses including Clearwater Seasonal Services and the soon to be launched social network SOCO5. Born in Kimberley, BC on October 17, 1986, Ryan was raised on the ski hill, and immersed in every social activity available. His great joys included music, traveling, feeling wind in his face, the smell of earth after the rain, mountain views, meeting new people, and connecting with his family.
(Sometimes you just have to let go.)
Well loved by most everyone he met, Ryan will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his immediate family Randy Tapp and Kim Bombardier and their children Jesse and James Bombardier, Cheryl and George Henry and their children Cailen (Scott), Michael (Erin) and Stephanie (Paul), Sharai and Rob Cook, Niki Tapp and children Veruca and Milo Smith, Edith Tapp and Elmer Becker, as well as step-family, aunts, uncles, cousins, close friends, and all who knew him, especially within the community of Nelson BC where he made his home.
NEW or USED – you’ll find your new wheels in – every Wednesday reaching over 30,000 East Kootenay readers.
There will be a Celebration of Life service in Nelson, BC on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at the Capitol Theater from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. An evening of music and tribute will follow at Nelson’s Spirit Bar from 8:00 pm until closing. Further information will be available at http://basscoast.ca/thelifeofryan. In recognition of his kind and compassionate nature, the family asks everyone wishing to memorialize him to please perform an act of kindness in Ryan’s memory.

Mercury levels rising in endangered Arctic gulls Bob Weber CANADIAN PRESS
1980s and the small white scavenger is down to about 500 breeding pairs. Ivory gulls live only in the High Arctic, where they prey along the edge of sea ice and feed off remains from polar bear kills. That diet may be the problem, suspects Bond, who conducted his research while he was based at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. He is now the director of conservation science at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in the United Kingdom.
A biologist is suggesting rapidly rising rates of mercury contamination may be behind the dramatic population drop of an endangered Arctic gull. “If nothing changes, we won’t have ivory gulls in Canada,” said Alex Bond, whose paper was published this week by the British Royal Society. Populations of the bird, which in North America only breeds in Canada, have fallen by 80 per cent since the

And of all ivory gulls, the Canadian ones have the highest mercury in their eggs.” The average level of mercury increases for northern species is just under one per cent a year. The level of increase for ivory gulls is twice that. Climate change and illegal hunting could also factor into the population decline, Bond said. Levels of mercury are known to be rising throughout the Arctic. The potent neurotoxin
Mercury accumulates as it works its way up the food chain. Ivory gulls, at the top of the pyramid, are highly vulnerable. Using old specimens in museums for comparison, Bond found that mercury levels in modern gulls are 45 times higher than they were in the 19th century. “Linking the levels that we see in bird feathers to population-level declines is really tricky,” he said. “But we do know that of all Arctic birds, ivory gulls have

A 2011 study found China to be the largest mercury source, although many U.S. states as well as Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick burn coal for power. Rapidly rising mercury levels could threaten the Arctic gull. mercury mines and includes control measures on air emissions. Ivory gulls are already considered threatened, the highest level of threat assessment in Canadian law. A recovery strategy for the
bird has been written, but plans to carry it out aren’t due until 2017. If nothing changes, the outlook for the birds isn’t good, said Bond. “Based on the status quo, it’s not very promising at all.”
Quest for telescopes takes curator to corners of the globe C arolyn Thompson ASSOCIATED PRESS
CORNING, N.Y. - You could say Marvin Bolt takes the long view. He’s on a worldwide quest to track down and catalogue the oldest telescopes known to man, dating to the early 1600s and the days of Galileo. “You’d think after 400 years, people would know where they are,” said Bolt, an expert on historical telescopes and the science and technology curator at the Corning Museum of Glass. So far, he has traced relics to private collections and museums throughout Europe, where the hand-held instruments first opened astronomers’ eyes to moons and planets and served as military surveillance tools. He continues to chase leads there, as well as in Asia and North America. The hunt has taken him to 21 countries, including China, Portugal, Estonia and the Vatican and began about a decade ago when a friend in Switzerland, a private collector, let Bolt look through a 17th-century telescope on a clear night. Although writings suggest the old telescopes didn’t work all that well, “the image was spectacular,” he said, “and not as people had described it.” “That was the turning point,” said Bolt, whose interest grew from his work as a cura-
tor at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, which he left for Corning in 2013. “We have to make a systematic study of actual objects: Where are they? How many are there and what can you actually see through them?” Backed by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation, Bolt has since catalogued more than 1,000 telescopes made before 1750, when the addition of a second piece of glass to the lens improved the quality and led to a production surge. That’s already more than he’d anticipated, given the frailty of the quarry. Telescopes, with delicate glass lenses, were made individually from rolled paper or parchment covered in leather or fish skin. Fewer than 10 telescopes from the earliest days, from 1608 to 1650, were known to exist at the start of the project. That number is now up to about 30. After finding the first telescope in Berlin, Bolt and Michael Korey, curator at the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon in Dresden, decided to look for similar displays. The next day, they learned of a cabinet at a similar museum nearby. “Sure enough,” Bolt said, “we found one which dates to about 1620. It’s one of the oldest ones in the world.”
