RCMP warn criminal activity will not be tolerated in trap vandalism On March 6th, 2015, at approximately 5:30 a.m. City of Cranbrook contractors were conducting their early morning rounds to check on the deer traps that had been strategically placed throughout the city. In doing so, the contractors discovered that sometime overnight, four

traps had the netting slashed making them unusable. The vandalism resulted in a considerable repair cost and the cull program had to be halted. The RCMP would like to remind the general public that, in spite of personal opinions and beliefs, damaging these
deer traps constitutes a criminal offence and will be fully investigated. “Implementing a deer cull program within a municipality will always be controversial. Peaceful demonstrations to express opinions are always welcome however criminal activity of any sort will not be tol-
erated,” stated Staff Sgt. Dubnyk. “These particular traps were placed on private property so individuals trespassing onto this property after dark constitute a second offence.” The RCMP are confident there are people out there that know who is responsible for damag-

ing these traps. Those with information are encouraged to come forward to provide that information to the police. The information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477).

Snell, an avid traveller and visual storyteller, has worked as an adventure guide in Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Patagonia. As the winner of Tourism Australia’s ‘Best Jobs in the World – Wildlife Caretaker’ position, he spent 2014 exploring Australia, documenting his experiences and starting his own destination marketing business. COTR graduate gets funded for travel series Kickstarter campaign to help fund his next innovative endeavour – an online documentary travel series. The series, which will be called Travel Global Think Local, is described as “a documentary travel series which tells powerful stories of extraordinary people in incredible places”. The focus of the series will be community projects that encourage empowerment, sustainability and the actions of people who are making the world a better place. “I believe that we can create a stronger future by engaging local communities to empower themselves for positive change,” says Snell. “Travel Global Think
Local embodies this belief.” The first episode of the web series will take place in Australia. Snell will feature The Bama Way, a small group of business owners who have come together to meet the challenges faced by the Bama – a community of Australian Aboriginals coping with a lack of meaningful local employment and threats to the sustainability of their traditions and culture. Future episodes are planned for India, Sri Lanka, Haiti, Ghana, Burma, Jordan, South Korea, and Brazil. Learn more about Travel Global Think Local at: travelglobalthinklocal.com. APRIL 18 Reception for the Junior
by Trent Brereton, ND
Joint health
My 47th year has not been one that I will remember fondly. It has been one of those years where one hard lesson has followed closely on the heels of the next. All of them have been health related and the last one has been no exception. As a young man I injured myself skiing and the injury resulted in a torn AC ligament of the knee. Like most young people my good health was wasted on me and as I have grown older this injury has come back somehow surprise me. Huh, you mean I really will age and decline? Lax ligaments in a joint allow for unstable movement and this promotes excess wear and tear damage to the cartilage. There are lots of natural medicines that can be used to help with this including glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin. Fish oils, turmeric and proteolytic enzymes also help by reducing inflammation and pain. A new wave of natural medicines using hops and berberine is proving very helpful too. Osteoarthritis and lax ligaments can also be treated
April 17-18 Conference: Friday 7pm, Saturday 9:30am, 2pm, 7pm. “Kingdom Living:Walking in Emotional Health” Speakers: Jason and Lauren Vallotton from Redding California. At House of Hope Cranbrook, 629-6th St NW. Registration: www. ihopecranbrook.com or 250-421-3784.
using Restorative Injection Techniques (RIT) like Prolotherapy. It is a treatment where dextrose (a sugar) is injected with procaine (an anesthetic) and saline into damaged ligaments and cartilage. The dextrose is an irritant and combined with the irritation of the needle on the tissue stimulates inflammation that triggers the repair mechanisms of the body. The result is that body grows stronger ligaments and more cartilage. It is a well documented therapy that has even been endorsed by the US Surgeon General after it helped him cure his chronic pain. There are numerous well designed studies that show prolotherapy to improve joint stability, reduce pain, improve quality of life and prevent or delay more invasive orthopaedic interventions. I have found it to be a safe and effective treatment for my recently discovered and unavoidable aging. Next week I will write about another RIT called Platelet Rich Plasma and why NSAID’s may promote joint damage.

The Weekday View
Opinion: Fear interferes with democracy by Brian Coombs This office often receives or hears about petitions from various groups who are looking to change or introduce something. These petitions are invariably directed at government, either local, provincial or federal. And while petitions are nothing new, there appears to be a relatively new phenomon happening as the petitioners are rounding up signatures. Fear. For the second time in as many months a petitioner has informed me that people are not signing their petitions and giving the reason that they are afraid to end up on some sort of government watch list. That this is happening in a time when it has never been easier to sign your name to a petition (change.org is a very popular petition site) is troubling. And it isn’t just because the troubling Bill C-51 is working its way to becoming law, it has been happening for some time now. Readers may remember the HST referendum and how that tax (for good or bad) was replaced because of the will of the electorate. While that was a victory for democracy, a
canvasser at the time told this office that numerous people told him that they didn’t sign anything for fear of being put on that same nebulous ‘enemies of the state’ list. Apathy probably still remains the prime reason why people won’t show disagreement with something they don’t think is good for them. Let’s face it—as long as your needs are met there is no good reason for rocking the boat, is there? But fear of governmenet reprisal is showing up increasingly as the excuse of choice for not participating. The fact is that governments have no more power than that which we, the electorate, grant to them. Another fact is that a populace that is fearful is much more likely to accept stagnant wages, unrepresented taxation, cuts to social programs and a host of other things that a calm, confident population is. Governments know both of these things. The media also knows that a story with the word ‘terrorist’ in it attracts more eyes than ‘lone nutjob’. Whether it was because Edward Snowden released classified documents that showed U.S. intelligence agencies sort
through our private messages, or because of the even more recent revelations about the Canadian Security Intelligence Service’s indiscretions, or even because you looked up cameras online and are now inundated with camera offers, people have the right to be concerned. This is the price we pay for living in a democracy though. We, as citizens, have to be vigilant in protecting our freedoms and when we are paralyzed by fear, democracy suffers. The old joke about being able to tell when a politician is lying (because their lips are moving) may be a broad over-generalization, but it is something to remember. Stoking fear is a great way to get re-elected. But know that we are not that far gone. The above-mentioned HST referendum reminded us that in the end, we do have the power to decide our (at least the majority’s) fate. If a critical mass of people are strongly for or against something, they will make themselves heard. It is important however, to remain cynical every time a government proposes to restrict our freedoms. It is equally important to let goverment know when you don’t agree with them. Utilities Commission has lost some of its credibility on its endorsement of the go ahead to BC Hydro for the construction of the $8 billion Site C Hydro Dam. $8 billion sounds like an insufficient estimate with today’s prices for material, communications system, heavy equipment, millions of dollars in fuel, wages and a 450-man camp erected on site with as many mouths to feed seven days a week, it appears as if the three persons on the panel at the utilities commission is having their decisions influenced by the provincial government. I think the BC Utilities commission started losing its credibility back in 2007 when they let the natural gas companies enter guesstimates on their billing statements
to their customers when they didn’t get around to reading their metres. The credits to the customers on later bills was a can of worms with us having already paid the PST and GST and getting the short end of the stick. Today in the Kootenays and other regions that Fortis BC delivers their electricity to. We the consumers are becoming aware of a serious problem with their billing in compounding interest increases every year. Of course I don’t expect our politicians to know what I am talking about because there is no lack of money, the utility bills aren’t scrutinized. They are just automatically paid instantly like so many others who didn’t even know that there was an increase on their Fortis

Hydro Bill in February of 3.5% resulting in $10 plus compounded on top of last year’s increase that we pay forever. However, I’m sure that our politicians have more to talk about than a hydro bill. Getting reelected would be one of their main topics. Well folks they are going to sit up and take notice with all the petitions arriving in Victoria from every city in the Kootenays and from all over BC, putting pressure on the provincial party leaders to take action immediately on the unregulated customer billing strategies of the hydro companies that are predatory and unconstitutional. The petitioners want punitive action from our MLAs and have the present billing system abolished and a new format installed and regulated by a responsible independent body of people. The petitioners want the three person panel at the BC Utilities
Local kids and their parents headed up to Fernie Alpine Resort (FAR) on Saturday, March 14 for the annual Griz Kidz Winter Carnival. Though some adjustments had to be made to bring the carnival inside due to a downpour, the most important carnival guests, kids, didn’t seem to mind. “The thing with kids is that they’re so resilient and they don’t really seem to care about that stuff. They’re still having a great time,” said FAR Events Coordinator Jeni Pearson. Among the activities

The first political party to take the two hydro companies to the BC Supreme court in a lawsuit will get a majority vote at the 2017 provincial election. The pressure is on them. As with the previous petitions against the HST, this petition is the most important one in our era. A petition has been started. As with previous petitions against the HST, this petition is the most important one in our era. offered were face painting, balloon animals, carnival games, Twister and a crafts table. Sweet treats like carrot cake and popcorn were also available during the free event. “It’s a really great opportunity for local families to come up to the resort,” said Pearson of the event. “It gives parents a chance to bring their kids up to the hill, show them the skis and they can learn about the resort and encourage them to take part in winter activities like skiing.” Pearson said that in the past approximately 300 kids took part in the carnival.

OBITUARY Frances Isobel Armstrong ("Urry") August 11th,1932 - March 15th, 2015 Fran passed away suddenly at Vernon Hospital, Vernon B.C at the age of 82. Mom was predeceased by her husband Jim at his death Jan. 23rd, 2014. Mom and Dad were together since high school for 68 years. Mom was born and raised in Barrie, Ontario by her parents Harold ("Hap") Urry and Bess (Johnson), "Gran" (Sarah Johnson (Hunter) and sister Margaret McLaughlin. Graduating from Barrie District Collegiate Institute in June 1951, Mom completed her training as an Operating Room Nurse from Toronto East General and Orthopaedic Hospital on Sept. 15th, 1954, and proudly represented the profession for the rest of her life. Mom leaves behind her children, Lynn Armstrong of Cranbrook, BC and Scott Armstrong of Vernon, BC and her grandchildren, Kevin Herbert and Mary Frances Noble, and Emma Frances and Claire Isobel Armstrong, family Marilyn and Allan Bauldry of Brampton and niece Anne McLaughlin Nakashima (Jim and Bess) and nephews John and Jim of Owen Sound, Ontario. Despite the many geographical stops in her life Mom's heart-home was Barrie of which she often talked of Clapperton and Maple St, Joanie Saso, and the Old Theatre. Mom loved our Cottage and the endless summers on Tea Lake in Pentaguishene. Mom's joys in her life centered on Dad, children and grandkids, any car ride anywhere, reading and the daily walks outdoors. Mom's primary support and strength in later years was her son Scott and their hours spent chatting and enjoying the hot Vernon sun at local coffee shops. Above all else Mom loved to make others happy.
