BOARD GIVES approval for eco programming.
Snuneymuxw clarifies Colliery dam position BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN
BY KARL YU THE NEWS BULLETIN
The Nanaimo school board has given Departure Bay Elementary School the green light to become a green school. Trustees gave unanimous approval Wednesday night, and the aim is to have an ecological-centric school that will yield students with knowledge of their place in the environment. According to Lisa Frey, principal, the eco-school has been running as a pilot project since September. The curriculum adheres to the new B.C. Education Plan and many activities are project based, said Frey. They are multi-disciplinary, incorporating many subject areas into the activity. Frey pointed to Grade 6 students working with Vancouver Island Univeristy students at the beginning of the school year to study varnish clams, an invasive species, at Departure Bay beach. “They had to do some measurements. They had to measure all the varnish clams, they had to help organize that data, so they were working with data, and of course then, that meets what we are looking to do with the curriculum at that particular level. “Collecting data, how to organize and display that data in a way that com-

the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation. “Certainly every year, we’ll be looking to complete grants, but I have to say, as far as in the environmental area, there’s not a shortage of groups and grant opportunities that support the kinds of initiatives that we have at our school. “There have been many grants that have come to our attention, that we haven’t applied for, so I feel confident that there are lots of opportunities in the future,” said Frey. Steve Rae, school board chairman, said he is hoping enrolment benefits. “We’re hoping this kind of thing draws kids back from the private system. Long term, this is something that we should be offering in all our schools, that’s the goal of this district, is to be able to do that,” said Rae. Frey said information on public meetings and registration deadlines will be forthcoming. The school will change its name to Departure Bay Eco-School.

municates information ... in each of these projects there’s opportunity to cover many subject areas,” said Frey. She said the school wants to continue to provide this type of program year after year, without having people pay fees, and to that end,
it has applied for numerous grants. While there are none from the province, Frey said approximately $19,000 has been secured from a variety of organizations that support environmental initiatives, including Wild B.C., an environmental education program from

The Snuneymuxw has never dictated to the city what it must do to remediate the Colliery dams, according to Chief John Wesley, who says the whole process has become highly politicized. The Snuneymuxw released a statement and letters from its chief Friday, outlining its position on the dams. Misinformation about its stance has become a concern for the First Nation, which states its decision was communicated ‘very clearly’ to the city and province and its position hasn’t changed. Last year Snuneymuxw representatives on Nanaimo’s technical committee and city Snuneymuxw will s t a f f j o i n t l y recommended not impede the city remediation of lower dam in fulfilling its legal the by enlarging the spillway with a responsibilities. labyrinth design. The Snuneymuxw council unanimously adopted a motion to support the measure if the city decides to go ahead with it, and agreed the city, as operator of the dam, is ultimately responsible to comply with dam safety standards. As long as its key interests are met around public safety, environmental protection and protection of Douglas Treaty rights, Snuneymuxw “will not impede the city in fulfilling its legal responsibilities,” statements say. Documents also show Snuneymuxw retained its own independent firm of dam safety engineers in 2013 to review the dams, including options for remediation, and it confirmed a problem exists and cannot be ignored. Ken Cossey, executive director for the First Nation, said as long as its three interests are met “that’s all we’re concerned about.” Wesley says the First Nation intends to follow a principled and reasonable approach to the file “that reflects SFN’s actual concerns and interests, not petty politics.”

Wo m e n f l e e i n g abuse will have a place to stay at Nanaimo’s new $9.6-million supportive housing project. Construction is underway for the only remaining supportive housing project planned for Nanaimo under the province’s Housing First Strategy. Residents and local dignitaries gathered at the site Friday to mark the start of the 41-unit project, which will house the homeless and those at risk of homelessness, including women fleeing from abuse. It’s the fourth supportive housing project in Nanaimo, fol-

lowing Uplands Walk. Coun. Wendy Pratt, acting mayor, said the city is excited about the project. “It confirms once again the City of Nanaimo’s commitment to ensuring everyone living in our community has safe and affordable access to housing,” she said. “It also affirms that each person has
value, regardless of their circumstances and that no one should fall so far in this community that they have to live and sleep on the streets.” The Boundary Crescent complex will be jointly operated by Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society, Haven Society and Vancouver Island Mental Health Society
and offers a secure floor and support for women fleeing abuse. Anne Taylor, executive director of Haven Society, said one of the organization’s biggest challenges is providing safe and affordable second-stage housing for women to establish a life free of violence, she said. “This project is going to allow us to be able to … provide 13 single women who are leaving abusive relationships the opportunity to establish a life that’s violencefree,” Taylor said. Jim Spinelli, executive director of the housing society, said the project experienced slow downs thanks to land negotiations with the city to re-designing a project that was beyond what B.C. Housing was willing to support. The project is anticipated to be open by mid-October.

City waiting on province to begin mine review By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
The stability of Nanaimo’s centur y-old coal mines remains a mystery one year after city politicians agreed to study underground tunnels. Nanaimo’s first proactive and high-level investigation into abandoned coal mines and the potential for their collapse is still waiting at the starting gates despite being seen as necessary by city officials. According to Poul Rosen, the city’s manager of engineering projects, the holdup is the B.C. government, which had indicated it would be willing to team up to determine the risk of underground mines but hasn’t formally responded to Nanaimo’s request for a partnership after nearly a year. With the responsibility of the mines falling to the B.C. Ministry of Energy and Mines,
Rosen isn’t sure if the city would want to proceed with the review, at an estimated $50,000 cost, on its own. “From the city’s perspectives, the roads and so on, those are the components that are at risk from a subsidence event. So we sort of own the consequences, but the ministry really owns why that’s occurring,” Rosen said. “We don’t really think at this point that it’d be appropriate for us to move forward wholesale on this thing on our own.” City politicians agreed last March to engage a team of consultants that would map areas of underground coal mines that could collapse into sink holes and to ask the B.C. government to partner on understanding the risks that tunnels could pose either through funding or access to technical information. The decision followed the discovery of a two-storey-deep coal mine void and developing

sink hole beneath a Nanaimo road. John Ruttan, Nanaimo’s mayor at the time, said by finding vulnerable mine shafts and tunnels before they collapse the city can prevent public safety issues and budget for remediation. The city knows where mines are, but not their condition. Mayor Bill McKay said he voted for studying the mines with big concerns for potential liability. A letter to the minister from council and the mayor might be in order to get information, he said. In an e-mail to the News Bulletin, David Haslam, spokesman for the B.C. Ministry of Energy and Mines, did not say why the province hasn’t responded to date, but that the ministry is determining the specifics of what kind of support can be offered and expect to have an official response to the city soon. news@nanaimobulletin.com

“People are lobbying us to fight the province’s Dam Safety Section or support their view that the dams are completely safe. Snuneymuxw will not be used to advance someone else’s political agenda,” Wesley said in a press release, adding the First Nation values its relationship with the city and mayor. Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay, who also heard from Snuneymuxw at an early March consultation meeting, would like to hear explanations from the First Nation around things like its interest in public safety. He also said Snuneymuxw has made it clear it doesn’t want to get involved in another process for the dams. “It means if we are going to satisfy the Snuneymuxw then we need to ensure that we follow the recommendations of the technical committee. That’s the box we’re in,” McKay said.

Feedback sought on spring break
I
SUPPORT WORKERS opposed to two-week proposal. BY KARL YU THE NEWS BULLETIN
Nanaimo school district’s education support workers’ union leader is against a proposal that could see spring break extended to two weeks. A longer spring break was amongst five school calendarrelated recommendations presented at Wednesday’s board meeting and Rob Zver, president of CUPE local 606, said it would come at the expense of his membership. “Our members that would traditionally work on the school days – so not all the members will be affected from it – will not be covered for the two-week spring break at the current design. They will be asked to lose a week’s pay ... “The ones that work the
least amount of time, the least amount of weeks, will pay the lion’s share for other people to enjoy a two-week spring break,” Zver said. Additionally, given Nanaimo’s reputation for high student poverty, Zver said an extra week would remove a safety net. “Most schools now have programs that feed children in it. Children feel safe, they can come there, they can have a meal. They get an education and they feel they have a warm place and somebody that cares. And that’s not all the students, but we’re here for all the students ... “Those that have very little, have nowhere to go, and those are the ones schools are supposed to be there for,” said Zver. Steve Rae, school board chairman, said it’s unfortunate the lowest-paid workers could be affected and the board will try to reach a solution, but it boils down to gov-
ernment funding. Upwards of $400,000 could be saved, he estimated. “The reality of it is, it is a significant cost savings to this district, to go to two weeks and that goes back to one thing, the underfunding of education and that’s where it all starts. It is something we’re working for. We need to do it ... we have a $4.5 million shortfall, so this helps a lot to do that,” said Rae. Mike Ball, Nanaimo teachers’ union president, said part-time and on-call teachers could be affected as well, but the union hasn’t taken a stance yet. Members will vote on the issue on March 31. Consultation on the recommendations has begun and feedback will be accepted until midnight on April 19. Trustees could make a decision at an April 28 meeting. House fire displaces two residents BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN
A fire at a home in the 700 block of Isle View Place has displaced two people and injured their pet cat. The fire happened Sunday shortly before 3 p.m. when the couple were out for a walk, said Rick Kwasnecha, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer. The fire was accidental and the cat is being treated at a veterinary hospital and is recovering, Kwasnecha said. The blaze was contained to one room, but the house suffered heavy smoke damage throughout.
The home is insured and it’s expected the owners will be displaced for possibly two months while repairs and restoration is carried out. In a separate incident, an attached garage and a vehicle were damaged when the vehicle caught fire at a home in 3200 block of Shearwater Drive in the Stephenson Point area of Nanaimo on Thursday at about 7:20 p.m. No one was hurt, fire damage was restricted to the garage and its contents, Kwasnecha said, adding the fire was sparked by a mechanical malfunction in the vehicle.

tudents and teachers from Vancouver Island University’s masters of business administration program spent the weekend raising money for the Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre. Three teams set up shop at Woodgrove Centre between Friday and Sunday, with the aim of raising money for the aboriginal centre’s Aboriginal Childcare Scholarship Fund. Pooja Khanna, a student and project CEO, and her team, nicknamed the Champions, occupied the centre of the mall Friday, and while they had plans to have a bouncy castle outside the mall, weather prevented it. Nevertheless, her team soldiered on. “Since the weather hasn’t been that sup-

cased some of their talent. “Some of the girls from Saudi Arabia are doing henna designs on the hands,” said Tessier. “They have someone that is doing the threading, so that’s the hair removal for ladies or men, on their faces. Kind of like waxing but it’s a really neat sort of a painless hair-removal method.” Arabic tea was also being served. Chris Beaton, Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre executive director, said it was amazing to see the students giving back to the community and helping the centre’s scholarship fund. “[The fund] helps young people access early-years programs that research tells us leads them to better success in high school and post-secondary themselves,” said Beaton. “So this is really giving back to community and giving back to education and children.”

Wage goes up bare minimum
Labour leaders in British Columbia looking for a big jump in the province’s minimum wage were disappointed with the modest 20-cents-an-hour hike. At the same time, those who actually make the minimum collectively shrugged at the raise, which amounts to about $30 per month more for full-time workers, less taxes and other deductions. The B.C. Federation of Labour wanted to see the rate pushed up to $15 an hour, a more livable wage for full-timers trying to make ends meet. Owners of small and medium-sized businesses whose input the province used to determine the hike claimed boosting the rate from $10.25 an hour to $15 would kill many of their operations. Business owners talk about paying what the market will bear. In other words, that means paying as much as the place down the street in the same industry. Operators of traditionally low-wage businesses will generally pay as little as possible while maintaining the ability to attract staff. To some that might sound as if business owners are all greedy individuals who put profits ahead of people. It’s not as simple as that. The majority of entrepreneurs and small business owners aren’t getting rich, they’re simply making a living, to which everyone is entitled. As well, individuals have the right to refuse to work for minimum wage, and many do. Business owners need to pay their workers compensation that’s fair, respectful and appreciative. The government has some responsibility to ensure that’s happening as unemployment rates and job opportunities ebb and flow in British Columbia. Continually addressing minimum wage is a way to provide that oversight. It can be hard to ask the boss for a raise, but it shouldn’t always be too much to ask. And sometimes the government needs to ask, on our behalf.
The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith,V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

By comparison, a Vancouver sales tax increase would spread the cost out to include transit users, cyclists, walkers and visitors. North American cities often have a more difficult time than European municipalities convincing residents to support transit funding. Denver has had two transit funding referendums, one that failed and a more recent one that passed. In 2014, Seattle residents took part in two votes, agreeing to a 0.1 per cent sales tax increase and a $60 vehicle levy to improve transit only after bus service faced severe cuts following a ‘no’ vote on transit funding earlier in the year. Canadians aren’t often invited to directly participate in policymaking. The vote in Metro Vancouver is the first of its kind nationally and will likely set off a heated debate about how transportation funding is discussed in this country. While the outcome remains uncertain, one thing is clear: People with realistic transit options have a daily choice to support or degrade the environment. When faced with that choice, history has shown more people opt to leave their cars in the garage. We need to think seriously about how we keep our cities moving into the future. www.davidsuzuki.org

March 10. I served in three royal navies from 1933 until 1949. Mostly our job was to show the flag, help keep the peace, settle disputes, help in disasters like earthquakes, etc., with a couple of exceptions. In 1935, 1936 and 1938, the Royal Navy was actively engaged in saving lives, supplying food and evacuation of women and children away from the war zone. In Palestine we tried to keep the two sides from killing one another, and lastly the war in China. All these events we were neutral, but we helped try to save lives where possible until 1939 when I was on our China station, and our captain told the crew that we were at war with Germany. Thousands of young men and women from all over the British Empire came to help the mother country keep her promise to Poland which was attacked by Germany, and as most people know that war lasted six long years. The German forces had overrun

Several times we came very near defeat, but finally the war was over in Europe and toward the end of 1945 my ship HMAS Quality led the combined fleets of U.S.A. and British Pacific fleets into Tokyo harbour to accept the surrender of the Japanese forces. If we had lost the war, people in the civilized world would be speaking German or Japanese, and you would have a German or Japanese puppet government, and required to attend their victory parade down your main street, and we would all be required to work at slave labour for the victors. Without the valiant effort in lives and property of the British Empire you would not be able to hold any parade except one allowed by your captors so this effort of the Nanaimo city council to not allow the Empire Days group to parade using their honoured name ‘Empire’ stinks.

Teach CPR in schools Re: Award recognizes lifesaving efforts, Feb. 17. That man’s actions that saved his girlfriend’s life are indeed heroic and miraculously heart-warming. I absolutely commend this man for having the courage to perform CPR for eight straight minutes without any training. This brings me to ponder, why are there no CPR courses available in the school district? CPR certification courses should be offered as an extracurricular or for credits in our high schools. Having easier access to these courses will raise the number of certified CPR individuals. Would it not be remarkable

So as I understand it, if I am travelling in the left lane 10 or 20 kilometres per hour over the speed limit, I will have to move over for some idiot behind me who is attempting to break the land-speed record. Forget it. If I know I am going to be turning left very soon, why should I have to move into the slow lane and get tangled up there, unable to get back to the left lane in time to make my turn? I will stay in the left lane as long as I am going the speed limit

École Hammond Bay Elementary’s parent advisory council is imploring the Nanaimo school board to consider funding for a bigger school gym. Jennifer Therriault, the school’s parent advisory council chair woman, told school trustees at
Thursday’s budget consultation meeting that the half-size gym has a maximum capacity of 312 people, yet current enrolment is at 347 students. Requests have been made for many years to numerous school boards, she said. “ We c a n ’ t h o s t games or tournaments at our school,” said Therriault. “Kids aren’t learning plays because basically, if you make two passes, then you’re out the other side of the gym.” Additionally, assemblies cannot be held,
as the student body and school staff aren’t able to fit in the space, according to Therriault’s presentation. There are also safety concerns, as there is no adequate interior space for people to safely meet in the event of an emergency. Steve Rae, school b o a rd c h a i r m a n , agreed that the school needs a better gym and said it will be a priority as budget discussions progress. Rae suggested money could come from approximately
$2.5 million that was designated for the Cedar Community Secondary School conversion project, which is currently on hold. “I think what we need to do, is we need to figure out what’s happening with Cedar first, because that’s where a lot of our [annual facilities grant] funds are tied up right now,” Rae said. The school district’s 2015-16 budget is expected to be adopted no later than May 5. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

False assumptions fail to silence singer American-born rock musician Cobra Ramone performs show at the Cambie on Friday night BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN
Cobra Ramone was a teenager when she came to the conclusion that school just wasn’t for her. “I never really did well in school,” she said. “I was never really a great student.” For the New Jersey native it was all about becoming a musician. “I don’t think I’ve had any other aspirations,” she said. “It’s just been music.” So as soon as her 16th birthday passed, she had made up her mind. “I dropped out of high school ... just to make this my career,” she said. Since then, Ramone has been working to establish herself in the Canadian rock scene. “It has never been a question to me. This is what I was going to do,” she said. On Friday (March 27) Ramone will be performing with her band at the Cambie. “This is what I live for,” she said. “I am really really stoked.” Ramone was born in Asbury Park, N.J. and moved to Alberta at a very young age. After dropping out of high school,
Ramone lived in Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto and immersed herself in the cities’ music scenes. By 2007, Ramone was living in the Leslieville area of Toronto, where she began attending open mics, playing at various venues and ventured into the rock genre. “I kind of started out in Toronto with this and wrote a rock record, which was my first foray into rock,” she said. “It was a bit of a learning curve for me. Just trying to get into that world.” Ramone says being in Toronto taught her the importance of separating herself from the rest of the pack. “I think it is really important to stand out and Toronto really helped with that because you’re always fighting tooth and nail to be noticed,” she said. In 2009 Ramone released her first record, The Flood in 2009 and her second record, a self-titled EP in 2012. The latter included the song, Guns Blazing, which was featured in the movie All the Wrong

Ramone says that when it comes to writing music she pictures movie scenes. “For every song I write I see a film in my head almost,” she said. “There is always a vision in my head and a film scene when I am writing.” Last month Cobra Ramone released her newest EP, Bang Bang, which was recorded at Greenhouse Studios in Vancouver and features guitarist Trevor

Ideal Weight Loss
The News BulleTiN
Lisa Campbell Ideal Weight Loss Coach
The first phase of our Ideal Weight Loss Program starts with 2 meals plus a snack from our large variety of high quality, protein-rich foods along with vegetables, salad and a self-prepared meal of meat, poultry or seafood. The protein pushes the body into ketosis, a fat-burning stage, enabling participants to lose weight. One client had tried “every diet out there” and her weight just went up and down. Then her doctor introduced her to Ideal Protein and the fat started “melting off.” She found it easy to use and could even travel with it. One of the most important things about Ideal Protein is that we teach you how to keep the weight off. People have tried so many diets, and they just gain the weight back and a little more. With Ideal Protein, we teach you how to food combine and help you understand what food does to your body. Come see one of our Weight Loss coaches today for a free consultation, including a complimentary Body Composition Analysis. You’ll be glad you did! FREE Delivery of Prescriptions & HHC Products

A brand new singing contest is just days away from kicking off. Sing It Up Vancouver Island is an American Idol-style singing contest that will begin auditions on Sunday (March 29) in Comox, with auditions also set to take place in Coombs, Nanaimo and Victoria next month. Event organizer, musician and artist developer, Susie McGregor said the contest is all about highlighting the talent on the Island. “Talent needs to be celebrated,” she said. “Talent needs a platform and an applause.” McGregor is no stranger to organizing musical events, having previously organized the Vancouver Island Music Business Conference,
Valley Idol and the Great Canadian Song Race. McGregor said she wanted to create a contest that will give musicians of all ages an opportunity to be celebrated. “The kids need to be celebrated and so do the adults,” McGregor said. “Often there are lots of talented adults out there that don’t have a platform or a place to go to let themselves be seen in front of a large audience.” Sing It Up Vancouver Island will see contestants divided into two categories, under 14 and over 15. After the first round of auditions, Sing It Up Vancouver Island will also be hosting music workshops for contestants. “We need to offer that to the youth to

give them a chance to build their confidence and to grow and to be the best they can be,” McGregor said. Following the first round of auditions, the semifinals will take place throughout May and the finals will be held in June at the Coombs Rodeo. The winners from each age group will both receive a Simon and Patrick acoustic guitar, $500 credit and performance opportunity at the Break Free Group
in Nashville, a live recording at the Duncan Showroom, a free workshop with music coach Jason Parson and a paid performance at the Coombs Rodeo. McGregor said the contest will be a great opportunity for Vancouver Island singers to network. “It’s a really a great bonding experience,” McGregor said. Sing It Up Vancouver Island auditions will be held in Nanaimo at Headliners on April 25. DEATHS
Kaj Jensen Kaj Jensen was born February 22, 1930 in Denmark. He grew up on a farm, and came to Canada (alone) at the age of 20. He worked in logging for several years, and then got interested in fishing. His first boat was a small gillnetter, and then he “moved up to troller (“Regal I). It proved to be the ideal occupation for him - he could live on the boat and be self-employed, all in a natural environment, and in the winter when fishing was closed, he could still work in logging. In 1967 he chose Port Hardy for a winter port, and there, through mutual friends, met Doris Bland (widow of a fisherman). They eventually married and had a son, Timothy. They lived in Nanaimo for the first 6 years and in 1971, Kaj built a new (fibreglass) trolling boat, the “Madrona. In 1977 they moved to Ucluelet, where they lived “off the grid for nine years until they built a house. When Kaj reached the age of 65, the fishing resource was deteriorating, so he sold the boat and they bought a hobby farm at Coombs. There, for the next twelve years, he raised chickens and a few sheep. During this time, he and Doris joined the Pacific Gardens Cohousing Community, whose building was still in the planning stage, and when it was finished in 2009, they sold the farm and moved in. His handyman skills were much appreciated there until he became unable to do the work. In March of 2014, he was diagnosed with cancer, and slowly weakened until he died on March 13, 2015. Besides his wife and son, he is survived by his only sister, Eva Jepsen in Denmark, and most of her descendants. His younger brother, Eigil (unmarried), died previously. He will be sorely missed by the members of Pacific Gardens Cohousing Community.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wilfred Harvey Boles on March 14, 2015 in Chilliwack, BC. Harvey was born in Estevan, SK on April 14, 1925. He was predeceased by his wife Phyllis Laurine Hagen, three brothers; Howard, Ronald and Lorne and his only daughter Jacqueline. Harvey is survived by five sons, Terrance, Warren, Hartley, Rodney and Robert as well as eleven grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. Harvey worked in the Coal Mining Industry for most of his career retiring in 1985 as Manager of Manalta Coals “Klimax mine in Estevan. He married Clara (Nelubowich) Symons in 1996 and they enjoyed many happy years together in Chase, Nanaimo, Medicine Hat and Chilliwack. Clare passed away recently. Harvey served his country in WWII in England and Continental Europe with the South Sask. Regt and later the Tank Corps. He was a long standing member of the Legion and Masonic Lodge. Harvey had a great sense of humour and we will miss his story telling. Interment will take place at a later date in Estevan. We will miss you. VIU gives all at nationals I WOMEN’S HOOPS team wins one of three games. BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN
The VIU Mariners didn’t win a national championship, but not because of any lack of will, or effort, or desire. Vancouver Island University’s women’s basketball team won one of its three games at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championships at the VIU gym last week. VIU dropped out of gold-medal contention Thursday after a 67-62 loss to the Holland Hurricanes. Trailing by 13 points after three quarters, the Mariners started the fourth on a 13-0 run to tie the game and ignite the crowd. “I’m extremely proud of them,” said Bill McWhinnie, Mariners coach. “That’s a very, very good team and a superior athletic team to us and they could have blown us out a couple times and we wore back and the girls were relentless and they didn’t give up.” The M’s never led, but tied the score five times before
falling back in the last minute and a half. Holland was able to hit a few more jump shots than VIU in the final moments. “The girls, they don’t quit and that’s the biggest compliment I can give them,” McWhinnie said. Jenna Carver was the player of the game for VIU, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Sienna Pollard scored 22 points.
Montmorency wins third-straight title The Nomades completed the three-peat in Nanaimo. The Collège de Montmorency women’s basketball team won its third-straight CCAA championship, defeating the Lethbridge Kodiaks 63-54 in the gold-medal game Saturday at the VIU gym. Gladys Hakizimana, tournament MVP, said she “couldn’t ask for more” than to win a third national title in three years, and said it was the Nomades’ sense of team that brought them success. “We’re just a real big family since the beginning of the year,” Hakizimana said. “I couldn’t ask for better girls than my team. I couldn’t ask for that.”
She led the Nomades with 17 points, while Nadege-Julia Pluviose had 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Kodiaks were led by Emma Lowry, who scored 17 points. Holland won bronze, beating the Humber Hawks 61-54. The VIU Mariners ended their tournament with a win, 63-51 versus the Mt. Allison Mounties. Carver, playing her last college game, scored 22 points and pulled down 29 rebounds. The day before, VIU fell out of the medal hunt in a 52-41 loss to the Quest Kermodes. Jamie MacFarlane led the M’s with 16 points. The Mariners were selected the tournament’s most sportsmanlike team.
Mariners men earn silver-medal finish VIU basketball fans were also paying attention to the out-of-town scoreboard last week as the Mariners men earned silver at nationals in Hamilton. The Humber Hawks defeated the Mariners 68-62 in Saturday’s gold-medal match. Justin King scored 26 points for VIU and Jason Fortin had 14 points, six rebounds and five steals. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

The Nanaimo Clippers earned a banner and the right to face the rest of the BCHL’s best. The Clippers are Island Division champions after defeating the Powell River Kings 3-2 in Game 7 on Sunday at Frank Crane Arena. “It’s unreal. I’ve never been a part of a playoff run like this at all,” said Brendan Taylor, team captain. Nanaimo opened the scoring early in the first period, then the teams traded goals in the latter stages of the second period and went into the third tied 2-2.
“We work hard to be prepared for those moments,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. “You try your very best to go back to the fundamentals and what you’ve trained and prepared [for].” Right away in the third period, they generated a shot on goal and Cole Maier fired in a rebound 18 seconds into the frame. Spencer Hewson and Nick Gushue were the other scorers for Nanaimo. Guillaume Decelles was the winning goalie, making 33 saves. “We’ve taken the longest,
hardest route to this point that you can in the playoffs,” said Vandekamp, as his Clippers needed the maximum 14 games to become Island champs. “It shows that we have the battle in us and the will,” said Taylor. GAME ON … The Clippers advance to the round-robin stage of the post-season. Nanaimo visits the Penticton Vees on Wednesday (March 25) at 7 p.m. and then hosts the Chilliwack Chiefs on Friday at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
