Library beefs up security

The theft of a new laptop and missing DVDs has prompted the Trail and District Public Library to add new technology to its repository – the 24/7 security camera. It's a sign of the times, and an action that many libraries are taking, says Barbara Gibson. “We want to continue to provide the best possible service for our patrons,” explained Gibson,
BC is on the move with $1.8 billion set aside to repair and grow the province's vast network of roads, highways, bridges and airports over the next three years. The question is, will Greater Trail be on or off the beaten path as the province fires up plans to improve safety, maintain and replace aging infrastructure and support global supply chains between North America and Asia. According to the Minister of Transport, there's improvements on the way for the area's side roads and secondary highways, grant money available for the Trail airport, and maybe a few dollars for the Victoria Street bridge. “West Kootenay folks can look forward to a good number of improvements that will take many different forms,” Todd Stone told the Trail Times last week. “When we look at corridors like Highway 3A and Highway 3B and the huge network of rural roads that are really important in rural B.C. these secondary rural roads are in need of attention.” He said there is about $400 million earmarked from the $890 million rehabilitation budget for work on highways and secondary roads in the region. The ministry is in the process of prioritizing projects and details will be forthcoming, he added. “But I can assure residents of the Kootenays (West and East), there are probably more side roads and secondary highways that are in need of upgrades than almost anywhere else in the province,” Stone continued. “So there will be tremendous focus and work done on the roads over the next three years.” The province has also committed to a provincial trucking strategy that includes upgrading bridges and overpasses to accomodate heavier loads. “We figure we'll be able to upgrade or

replace 30 structures,” said Stone, noting that funds are not for tearing down old structures, like the old bridge, which is city property. “We profiled a few bridges in our plan and we will be getting on with details soon.” The B.C. on the Move plan includes community input from stakeholders across the province, including local governments, chambers of commerce, port and airport authorities and responses from a public survey. The ministry hosted a stakeholder meeting in Trail last fall, and heard five key points from participants. The transportation of goods via road and rail from Washington, U.S.A., throughout the region was highlighted as an important passageway, and attendees urged the province not to lose sight of the vital corridor. “This is a great example for potential funding,” said Stone, noting B.C.'s 47,000 kilometres of highway and rural roads the province is responsible for. “So that's always an ongoing challenge to invest as much as we can in as many kilometres of highway each year – it's a balancing act.” Another theme heard locally and across the province, was that aviation is critical to growing the B.C. economy, and small airports are the best way to connect communities. The need for a runway extension at the Trail Regional Airport was noted during the Trail gathering, and in the Grand Forks meeting, participants expressed airport reliability in Trail and Castlegar a key issue in the region. Stone said as part of the 10-year B.C. on the Move plan, the new B.C. Air Access Program makes $8 million available annually for three years, so community airports can access grants to improve infrastructure like runways, terminals and lighting. See PROVINCE, Page 3
incidence that has the facility adding security and reconfiguring how certain resources will be handled moving forward. “The other issue we have is DVDs being taken out of the envelopes and the case put back on the shelf,” said Gibson. “We are going to be doing a little rearranging because we want to be able to update DVDs and upgrade our music to provide the best possible service for our patrons.”
Instead of recorded materials being available in a public access format, library staff will be emptying all the cases, putting the DVDs in envelopes and storing them behind the circulation desk. “It's mostly movies and a number of TV series that we carry,” noted Gibson. “I can't say how many have gone missing but even one or two is too many because they cost us.” See LIBRARY, Page 3

A couple hundred skiers, snowboarders and spectators crowded the deck at the resort watching participants bomb the hill in an attempt to jump the pool of ice water at the end. Rounding out the event was a DJ booth and drink service at the free deck party. First prize for the highest score was a brand new snowboard.

Bear-proof bins sought for rural residents By Tamara Hynd Nelson Star
Rural West Kootenay residents may have another option to store their garbage in bear proof containers. Conservation officer Jason Hawkes and Gillian Sanders presented the option to the Regional District of Central Kootenay board on Thursday as part of the West Kootenay human bear conflict working group. Hawkes said 35 per cent of the wildlife problem in the RDCK is related to garbage. Animals will associate a location with a food source (garbage) and will continue to return seeking food. “Killing bears that have been conditioned to eat garbage is a well recognized problem,” said Saunders. “We’ve known for more than 40 years not to feed bears. It’s so last century.” The pair requested $7,500 of the $25,000 they are raising in the region. The $7,500 would purchase 25 bins at $250 a piece with aims to allocate five bins in five areas. The focus is to provide the bear proof containers in rural areas for residents who otherwise would have no secure place to store their garbage between the time the refuse leaves their house and is taken to a transfer station. Sanders said a 50/50 cost share program can also be arranged for residents. There are two models which require the dexterity of opposable thumbs to open, something bears do not have. There are three sizes: 32 gallons, 64 G and 94 G, which

Medical Marijuana cookie case hits high court By Jeff Nagel Black Press
Turning medical marijuana into cookies, tea or oil should not be a criminal act that risks jail time, a B.C. lawyer told the Supreme Court of Canada Friday in the first ever hearing of its kind. Kirk Tousaw appeared before the country’s top court to argue the ban on cannabis derivatives, extracts and edibles like pot brownies is unconstitutional and that authorized medical marijuana patients should be free to use the drug in whatever
form works best for them, not just the dried plant, which is the only medical exemption to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The federal government is appealing the dismissal by B.C. courts of drug trafficking charges against Owen Smith, a Victoria man caught baking pot cookies for members of a local compassion club. It’s the first time a medical marijuana issue has made it to the Supreme Court after a series of court rulings that have forced Ottawa to pro-
Auditor out
THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA - British Columbia’s controversial auditor general for local government is being dismissed from her job. Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Coralee Oakes announced that she is recommending auditor Basia Ruta’s appointment be rescinded. Oakes says Ruta’s obstruction of an intended review of her office has created an intolerable situation that compounds the unstable work environment. The minister says her decision was made after receiving a recommendation that Ruta be removed from her post by the council that monitors the local auditor. Last week, Ruta complained about a perception of bias after an audit was launched of her office weeks after the municipal government watchdog came under fire for allegations of an inefficient and unhappy workplace. Oakes says in a news release that removing the auditor is the only way to ensure proper functioning of the office.

vide physician-authorized access to the drug. Tousaw said many medical marijuana patients don’t want to smoke pot all day long to relieve symptoms and would rather eat it as the medicinal effects are longer lasting and more effective than when inhaled. He pointed to the testimony of Gina Herman, a patient who brewed tea from her medical marijuana – technically an illegal act. “She’s perfectly fine holding her dried cannabis, but she’s not fine holding her medicinal tea out of it,” Tousaw told the court. “That highlights the arbitrariness of these restrictions.” He noted the trial
judge in the case agreed ingesting edibles is “as safe or safer than smoking.” Ottawa could readily regulate medical pot derivatives as it does natural health products without criminalizing them, Tousaw added. Crown prosecutor Paul Riley argued medical marijuana patients have legitimate alternatives to smoking, including vaporizing and the use of approved cannabisbased drugs that come as pills, capsules or oral sprays. He said advocates merely prefer an illegal form of the drug when legal options exist. If government is forced by the courts to allow medical mari-
juana, he said, it’s reasonable to exclude forms for which there is no scientific evidence of the benefits or safety. “We don’t know the implications and effects of derivative marijuana,” Riley told the court. “We don’t know those things so we’re not going to regulate them.” Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin questioned whether criminal sanctions are appropriate. “You’re putting people in risk of imprisonment as opposed to the usual regulatory scheme,” she said, triggering applause from the gallery. Riley said the Victoria dispensary
where Smith baked was producing massive quantities of edible pot products for dubious reasons. He said the Cannabis Buyers Club of Canada there had nearly 4,000 members, only five to 10 per cent of whom had medical marijuana permits, and a club representative admitted having to cancel more than 500 memberships of people suspected of reselling pot. Riley likened the case to a failed challenge by raw milk advocates of laws requiring pasteurization. Ontario courts rejected the argument their constitutional rights were violated. “Unless you can show something is safe
and therapeutically effective it shouldn’t be authorized,” Riley said, citing drugs like thalidomide that “people assumed were okay but turned out not to be.” The ruling isn’t expected until at least summer but when it comes it could force significant changes to how medical marijuana is regulated in Canada. The government’s new commercial pot production system offers only dried pot. A separate challenge before the courts led by Abbotsford lawyer John Conroy seeks to ensure patients can continue to grow their own marijuana and not be limited just to buying from commercial producers.

Abbott’s appointment had already been approved by the federal government and the First Nations Summit, who share jurisdiction over the Treaty Commission with the province. Outgoing Chief Commissioner Sophie Pierre, who agreed to a three-year extension of her term to keep the 20-year-old treaty talks moving ahead, praised Abbott as “a man of integrity, intelligence and extensive experience” who was prepared to make progress. “This retrac-

It’s just such a tragic event,” says MacFarlane. He says the teenager arrived with the group to participate in a ski race, but it was postponed because there was too much fresh snow. The group decided to go free-skiing instead. The young man was likely a good skier and was wearing a helmet at the time, MacFarlane says. Still, he says the tragedy should serve as a reminder to skiers to observe the boundaries and marked areas on the mountain.

national Harper meets with NATO head THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper and NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg met Monday to discuss the war in Iraq and the crisis in Ukraine. The meeting just comes days ahead of the planned introduction of a motion to extend and expand Canada’s combat mission against extremists in Iraq - and possibly Syria. Stoltenberg, a former prime minister of Norway who became the alliance’s secretary general last year, is on his first visit to Canada. He says the U.S.-led coalition’s mission in the Middle East is important because stability in the
region is vital to the security of the rest of the world. Stoltenberg praises Canada’s contribution in Iraq and to NATO’s reassurance missions in eastern Europe, which have included fighter jets, the deployment of a frigate and ground troops on a training exercise. NATO has no role in the war against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, although it was widely expected the military alliance would contribute to a mission to train Iraqi security forces the way it did in Afghanistan. But to date, there has been no invitation from the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.

Advocacy group calls for affordable communications
THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - A consumer advocacy group says communications services are so essential to Canadians, some people are willing to give up on food and health care purchases to make sure they stay connected. And because cellphone, Internet and other services have become a vital part of everyday life, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre is calling on the federal government to make access to affordable communications the law of the land. In a report released Monday, the group recommends Ottawa adopt an enforceable, universal service obligation, incorporated into legislation including the Telecommunications Act. The report notes average monthly communications expenses in Canada range from just over $100 to $212. And for many lowincome Canadians, those costs have forced them to rack up substantial debts to
maintain service, with some people choosing to forego essentials such as food to pay their phone, cable and Internet bills. Communications expenses ate up an average of 7.67 per cent of the monthly income of low-income households, with smaller families of between one to four people spending proportionately more. Despite the costs, many consumers told the group they were reluctant to cancel their communications services, even under tight household budgets. “Those who were not willing to further reduce or cancel their communications services said that money would have to come from other expenses, such as occasional cinema movie trips for children, holiday and Christmas gifts, smoking, and any personal spending for the adults,” said the report, entitled No Consumer Left Behind: A Canadian Affordability Framework for
Communications Services in a Digital Age. “Some consumers were even willing to cut other basic expenses, including food, clothing and health care, rather than cancel their communications services.” The report also recommended that the government introduce affordability guidelines, with average communications costs ranging from four to six per cent of a household’s income. Affordability, however, is subjective and depends on an individual or household’s ability to control their expenses, said the report’s authors, who gathered their findings from focus groups, regulators and academic researchers. Participants were asked to rank the importance of each communication service. Telephone service, whether corded or wireless, was ranked almost unanimously as the most important. “Although this was
partly because mobile phones especially allowed consumers to carry out a variety of activities, it was above all because telephones kept consumers in contact with the rest of society - family and friends, but also doctors, social workers, employers, clients and service providers,” said the report. Most people who had home Internet service also said they would be extremely reluctant to cancel the service, with many saying they use the Internet to carry out many day-to-day activities such as banking and searching for information. Television service was considered essential by some low-income groups, including consumers who were less mobile. The report also recommends that the Canadian Radiotelevision and Telecommunications Commission provide the public with annual research reports on the affordability of all major communications services.

Province making progress on poverty
T
he B.C. government has made its most significant moves in decades to address the needs of some of the province’s poorest people. The largest financial commitment is for a new program to help single parents escape from the welfare trap. There are 16,000 single parents in B.C. receiving provincial income assistance or disability payments, most of them women. Even if they could find an entry-level job, it wouldn’t pay enough to cover the child care they would need to go to work. Worst of all, the current system requires that if they enrol in training, they lose their income assistance, including dental and extended medical care for themselves and their children. That is the welfare trap, one of the most perverse government policies to have survived into our supposedly enlightened modern era.
The new program takes effect in September. It will not only continue income assistance payments when single parents enrol in skills training, it promises to cover their child care and transportation costs for an approved training program of up to one year. Medical and child care costs will then be covered for up to a year after training, to allow a transition to employment. Approved training means training for jobs that are identified as in demand, requiring high school and occupation-specific training that can be completed in a year or less. They include retail sales, general office work and assistance jobs in health services. Another overdue policy change is to double the allowable earnings for all income assistance recipients from $200 to $400 a month. This gives people a chance to improve their

FLETCHER B.C. Views
circumstances by taking whatever part-time or casual work they can manage, without having that little income cut from their already meagre welfare cheques. And then there was the recent decision to end the claw-back of parental child support payments from income assistance payments. The province has for many years run a costly child maintenance enforcement program to track down (mostly) deadbeat
dads and force them to pay at least a token amount to support their children. Now when they pay child support to a single parent on income assistance, they will at least have the satisfaction of knowing the children actually receive the extra benefit. These harsh, historic policies were built around a philosophy that welfare is a temporary last resort, to be withdrawn as soon as some other source of income is identified. That is a valid if unfashionable position to take on behalf of working taxpayers who pay for all this, but it only makes sense if the income assistance recipient has a realistic option. For those who are already in the entry-level job market, the minimum wage goes up 20 cents an hour in September, from $10.25 to $10.45. This is the beginning of an annual review that will tie the wage to the consumer price index.
A paltry sum, to be sure, but anyone who still thinks jacking the minimum wage up to $15 an hour is a magic solution that won’t cost some entry-level jobs is clinging to a socialist dream world. • I have been contacted by several low-income seniors who read my recent column on B.C.’s Seniors’ Advocate. They were asking where to find out if they are eligible for support programs such as the SAFER rent subsidy, assistance for Medical Services Plan premiums, property tax deferment and grants to help with home modifications for disabilities. I apologize for this oversight. One place to start is the Seniors’ Advocate toll-free information line, 1-877-952-3181, weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. truth on Monday because that’s what the settlers and their supporters wanted to hear, and he needed those votes in order to survive politically. But it destroyed the myth, useful to the United States and the European Union, that there is some surviving peace process that must be protected by keeping the Israelis happy. The peace process is dead, dead, dead. Has been for years. There is no two-state solution on the table. This makes it a lot harder for the US to veto resolutions critical of Israel at the United Nations, as it has done 51 times since 1972. Without the cover of peace talks, these vetoes become votes for perpetual Israeli rule over the Palestinian people. And it will accelerate the broader erosion of the old pro-Israel reflexes of people in Europe and the US who needed the reassurance that some day, somehow, there would be a just peace settlement. Netanyahu made matters considerably worse during the campaign by openly showing his contempt for President Barack Obama. His panicmongering speech to the US Congress, painting Obama’s quest for a nuclear deal with Iran as a naive surrender to Iran’s alleged desire for nuclear weapons, was an unprecedented foreign intervention in the US political process. It will not be forgiven or forgotten by Obama. His election promise to speed up Jewish settlement in the Palestinian territories (which is illegal under international law) was another nail in the coffin of peace negotiations. Still, it did help to get Netanyahu reelected, and for him that’s all that counts. He still truly believes that only he understands the real and existential dangers facing Israel, and has the will to do something about them. Except that all he ever really does is kick those dangers down the road a bit. Unable to believe that a peaceful settlement is possible or even desirable, he condemns his country to perpetual conflict and growing isolation.

‘La Femme Nakita’ star passes THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Canadian actress Alberta Watson has died after a long battle with cancer. Watson’s agent Pam Winter says the “La Femme Nikita” star died Saturday in Toronto. She was 60. Winter says Watson “died in the arms of her beloved Ken ... after a long and incredibly courageous battle.” A memorial service is being planned. Besides her turn as the operative Madeline Pierce on “La Femme Nikita,” Watson became known to TV audiences through roles on “24,” “The Newsroom,” “Heartland” and “The Border.” Her film credits include Atom Egoyan’s “The Sweet Hereafter,” Sarah Polley’s “Away from Her,” David O. Russell’s “Spanking the Monkey” and George Kaczender’s “In Praise of Older Women.”

Famed children’s writer began penning stories for her son THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Ellen Conford, an award-winning children’s writer whose comic tales about everything from the travails of high school to a girl’s summer camp crush made her a favourite for at least one generation of readers, has died. Conford died at home in Great Neck, New York, last Friday, on her 73rd birthday, her husband told The Associated Press. David Conford said Monday that
his wife had been in poor health and died of heart failure. Conford’s more than 40 books - for age groups ranging from small children to young adults - included the “Jenny Archer” and “Annabel the Actress” series and the novel “This is Laura.” Her husband said that a personal favourite was “The Alfred G. Graebner Memorial High School Handbook of Rules and Regulations,” published in 1976 and inspired by the guidelines that their son, Michael, received while in high school. “Ellen found some of the rules so hilarious that she started working on a book about them,” David Of Rossland and formerly Conford said. that created the kind of John Green YA as we know it today - the kind of witty works that also take their readers seriously,” said Lizzie Skurnick, who has been reissuing Conford’s work through her eponymous imprint. “Whether she was writing about a girl fleeing foster homes in the 1950s (‘To All My Fans, With Love, From Sylvie’) or the consummate novel of summer camp (‘Hail, Hail Camp Timberwood’), her books are plotted so well, and her writing is so smart and fabulous. Readers have been sending me pictures of all the old books they’ve held onto since they were teenagers.” A native of New York City who edited her high school’s humour magazine and attended Hofstra University, Conford had been writing poems and short stories when a trip to the library inspired her to try a different kind of book. She was frustrated by the scarcity of good stories for her son and wondered aloud if she couldn’t write one herself.“ “I said to her, ‘Then why don’t you?”’ her husband recalled.

Twisted Sister drummer dies on bus
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS A.J. Pero, the drummer for the heavy-metal band Twisted Sister, died Friday. He was 55. The band said Anthony Jude Pero died of an apparent heart attack while touring with Adrenaline Mob, a group with which he played in between engagements with Twisted Sister. Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French said Pero was on a tour bus Friday morning when Adrenaline Mob band members tried unsuccessfully to awaken him, then called an
ambulance. He was taken to a hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he was declared dead shortly after 11 a.m. He joined Twisted Sister in 1982, right before the band exploded onto the burgeoning heavy metal scene after nearly a decade of slogging through small clubs. Wearing makeup and glam costumes, the highly visual band was a perfect match for the fledgling MTV video network and become one of its mainstays with hits that included “I Wanna Rock.”

Culley leads Canada to berth in Olympic qualifier By times Staff Rossland native Thea Culley and Team Canada’s women’s field hockey team are one step closer to the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The Canadians advanced to the World League Round 3 tournament in Valencia, Spain in June, which will decide the final Olympic competitors, by making it to the final of the World League Round 2 tournament in Dublin, Ireland on Sunday. After beating Austria 5-2 Friday on the strength of veteran Culley’s two-goal performance, Canada faced Chile in the semifinal. The game remained scoreless after 60 minutes, before the Canadians won it 4-3 in a suddendeath shootout, and advanced to the final against host Ireland. “It was pretty back and forth with most of the play being in the middle of the pitch” said Canadian goalkeeper Kaitlyn Williams, who later in the match would play hero. “Whenever we play Chile it ends up being a battle to the last minute and tonight was no exception. “ In the final match against Ireland on Sunday, the game went to another shoot out after finishing in a 1-1 tie. However, this time Ireland would prevail in a 5-4 shootout and Canada settle for second at Women’s World League 2. The game, not surprisingly, began with Ireland taking advantage of home field, feeding off the energy of the crowd and owning possession early. Canada settled in well after that, controlling the midfield and slowly pushing back. The play stayed level through the end of the first quarter ends with the teams tied nil-nil. In the second quarter, Canada

Their first good chance came after Abigail Raye made a nice flip along the right line, fed the ball to the top of the circle where it was heavily played into the middle and Alex Thicke deflected it on goal. Irish keeper Emma Gray was in perfect position, however,
to turn the redirect aside. The second half began like the first did, with Ireland earning penalty corner in the first minute after a strong challenge in the circle. A heavy hit from Cliodhna Sargent was kicked out by Williams, but Evans was quick on the rebound and put it by the Canadian keeper to give Ireland the 1-0 lead in the thirty-first minute.
Seventh heaven for Penticton Vees By Emanuel Sequeira Penticton Western Star
The biggest goal of Patrick Sexton’s career gave the Penticton Vees the BCHL’s Interior Division championship Sunday night before 3,200 fans at the South Okanagan Events Centre. Sexton, a bruising defenceman who scored once during the regular season, watched as his shot from the point bounced off a leg, flipped into the air and beat Vipers goalie Danny Todosychuk glove side at 17:07 for a 1-0 lead. The Vees withstood pressure by the Vipers for the last 2:30 of the third period. Matthew Serratore put the dagger in the Vipers with an empty net goal at 19:56 in Game 7. “Me and (Dante) Fabbro talked before the draw, we just wanted to get the puck to the net,” said Vees co-captain Sexton, named the game’s first star. “I think it bounced off his skate. At this
point I don’t really care, they all count. It’s a little sweet revenge for last year.” Former Vee Liam Finlay, who was dealt for Dakota Conroy earlier this season, said it was intense game. He was hugged by nearly every Vee in the handshake. “I felt we played a heck of a game and battled all night,” said the teary-eyed Finlay. “We just didn’t get the bounce we wanted. To lose the way they did, it was extremely tough. We have a great group of guys here in there. It really sucks coming up with the loss.” Both teams weren’t able to capitalize on the powerplay, with the Vees going 0-for-3 and the Vipers 0-for-2. Hunter Miska turned aside 27 for the shut out and was named the second star, while Todosychuk made 28 saves and was named the third star. “We’re proud of them,” said
Vipers coach-GM Mark Ferner. “They did everything that we asked them to do in this game. I told them sometimes the game can be cruel. We lose a draw, we go do what we’re supposed to do and block it. It’s just one of those things. We had one of them ourselves (Game 5). This game could have gone either way. We had some great opportunities. It just wasn’t meant to be.” The Vipers led the series 3-2, but a 5-1 loss in Game 6 in Vernon Saturday forced the crucial Game 7. The Vees move on to round three, a round-robin featuring the three conference winners, Penticton, the No. 1 seed, hosts second-rated Nanaimo Clippers Wednesday night. The Clippers shaded the visiting Powell River Kings 3-2 on Sunday night to take that series in seven games. The Chilliwack Chiefs are the other conference champion.
Minutes later, Canada went back on the front foot, once again thanks to Sourisseau who navigated her way through the circle and earned a penalty corner for Canada. On the ensuing corner, the ball was played to Holly Stewart who, while sliding on her knees into the back post, deflected it past Gray for Canada’s first goal and to tie the game at one in the
thirty-seventh minute. The pace of the game picked up after the first two goals, as both teams wanted the go-ahead goal with time dwindling. With less than a minute to go, the team’s exchanged penalty corners. A goal from either side would have surely been the winning tally, but on the Irish end keeper Emma Gray made a strong save, and on the Canadian side Canada defended well to earn a free out. For the second straight match, with the game still tied 1-1 after sixty minutes, the game went to a penalty shootout. Ireland took an early lead scoring the only goal in the first round. Both teams scored in the second and third rounds, before Brienne Stairs scored and Williams forced the Irish shooter wide in the fourth round to level the score. In the fifth and final round, Abigail Raye was stopped by Gray and Aine Connery made good on her opportunity to win the match and to crown Ireland champions of World League Round 2. With their top two finishes, both Canada and Ireland advance to World League Round 3, or the World League 3 Semifinals, in Valencia. The top three finishers from each of the World League Semifinals will advance to the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. Culley, playing in her 121st CAP, led Team Canada with four goals and one penalty corner and was tied for fourth in tournament scoring. Canada’s Kaitlyn Williams took home honours as the tournament’s top goalkeeper, while Hannah Haughn earned the acolade as the tournament’s best young player.
Nitros seize series lead
By cranbrook townsman The Kimberley Dynamiters took both games of the KIJHL championship series at home on the weekend, beating the Kamloops Storm 3-2 on Saturday, before doubling them up 6-3 on Sunday. Braden Saretsky continued his torrid scoring pace, registering three goals and an assist to help fuel the Nitros Sunday night. After scoring 19 goals in 44 regular-season games split between the Summerland Steam and Kimberley Dynamiters, the 18-year-old native of West Kelowna has been lights out in the post-season, leading the KIJHL with 16 goals through 18 games. “I’ve just been shooting the puck lots on the power play. I’ve been getting good opportunities and I’ve been lucky enough to bury most of them,” Saretsky said Sunday night. “I have to give it
to my teammates as well. [Jared] Marchi has probably assisted on half or more of all them on the power play.” Saretsky tallied his first of the night with a second-period marker that gave his team a 3-1 advantage. In tight, the 5-foot-11 forward patiently out-waited Storm goaltender Jacob Mullen before finding a hole high and beating the 20-year-old puck-stopper. Saretsky wrapped up his hattrick performance with a pair of blasts from the point, both assisted by Marchi. The first came with the two teams skating four-on-four during a penalty-filled third period. The last tally found twine midway through the final period on the man advantage. Saretsky’s hat-trick marker gave the home team a 6-2 lead. The next game goes tonight in Kamlops.

Halep claims three sets Romanian tennis player wins biggest title of her career The Canadian Press Simona Halep beat Jelena Jankovic 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 to win the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday, giving the Romanian the biggest title of her career and a WTA Tourleading third tournament victory of the year. Halep improved to 6-0 in threeset matches this year, smacking a cross-court forehand winner off Jankovic’s weak volley return on match point. The world’s thirdranked player advanced to the final when Serena Williams withdrew before their semifinal because of a sprained right knee. “The first set was strange for me because I didn’t play for three days. It’s really tough to go straight to the finals,” said Halep, who hadn’t played since Wednesday. Top-ranked Novak Djokovic played No. 2 Roger Federer for the men’s title later. Halep continues her rise in the sport, having broken into the top 10 a year ago and being a finalist at the French Open and semifinalist at Wimbledon last year. The 23-year-old Romanian reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in January. “I have another title, my biggest title now, so it’s amazing,” she said.
Jankovic won her biggest career title at Indian Wells in 2010. She was seeking her first tournament victory since 2013 at Bogota, but she couldn’t hold a lead. She was up a set and a break in the second only to have Halep win two straight games and tie it 3-all. Jankovic broke for a 5-4 lead on a smash and then was two points from victory on her serve in the next game, but Halep won the final three games of the set. “At the end of the second set I got a little bit nervous,” Jankovic said. “I got a little bit tentative and that was my big mistake. I let her come back into the match. I kind of let those nerves take the best out of me. That shouldn’t happen.” Both players struggled to hold serve in the third set, when there were seven breaks. The 2 1/2-hour match had 18 service breaks in all. “I don’t know how I won today because I didn’t play my best,” Halep said. Halep had a trainer work on her feet to start the second set. At times, she bent over and rested on court. “I was tired a little bit and I had blisters only, so it’s not that bad,” she said. “But still it’s bothering you during the match, during the running. In the end of the second set I had muscle problems. But I didn’t think about anything. I just wanted to fight to win every ball.”

That’s remarkable considering Jan. 31 the Rangers held the Eastern Conference’s second wild-card spot. They’re 19-3-3 since, picking up 41 out of a possible 50 points and passing 12 teams to assume top spot. Most of that has been without starting goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, including Sunday’s 7-2 blowout with Cam Talbot in net. Staal said he believed “statement games are a little overrated,” but this has been a statement stretch for the Rangers. No Lundqvist and no Martin St. Louis have proved to be no obstacle. “They don’t need a lot of goals to win games,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “We thought they were the fastest team we played against when they came to Honda Center. ... And you know they’re well-
coached. They’re four lines deep.” Derek Stepan was among the Rangers players who broke out of slumps in a game that made the Ducks look more like the 30th-place team than one fighting for first. The Rangers, on the other hand, are rolling, and their confidence level is high. “We’re confident in the way that we’re going to make plays, we’re going to do the right thing,” Girardi said. “We feel really good about our game right now, but we’re definitely not satisfied.” That’s a smart viewpoint given how tight things are atop the East, let alone the NHL. If the Rangers hit a rut, Carey Price and the Canadiens could swoop in and take home ice. Tampa Bay could easily do the same.

‘Insurgent’ tops MONday & Movies box office
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - Sean Penn’s “The Gunman” was no match for the rebel kids of “Insurgent.” The second installment in the “Divergent” series easily topped the box office with $54 million from 3,875 theatres, according Rentrak estimates Sunday. Penn’s geopolitical thriller stumbled with only $5 million. While the second films in both the “Hunger Games” and the “Twilight” series boasted opening weekend gains over the first, “Insurgent’s” opening nearly matches that of its predecessor, “Divergent,” which debuted to $54.6 million just last year. Many predicted a bit of growth for this second film, which sees the return of stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet to author Veronica Roth’s dystopian world. But, both distributor Lionsgate and box office analysts see the consistency as a good thing. According to Lionsgate, 60 per cent of audiences were female. Rentrak’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian credits Lionsgate’s consistent release date strategy and impressive marketing campaign for the strong repeat performance. “It’s really about driving a very fickle audience, that teen, YA - whatever you want to call them - they’re really tough to get a handle on. Their tastes change like the wind,” he said. “The key is keeping the young adult audience engaged, excited and enthusiastic.” “Insurgent” also performed well overseas, taking in $47 million from 76 markets, bringing its worldwide total to $101 million. Disney’s live-action “Cinderella,” meanwhile, fell 49 per cent in Week 2 to take second place with $34.5 million. The PG-rated film has earned an impressive $122 million domestically to date. Also in its second weekend in theatres, the R-rated Liam Neeson-led action film “Run All Night,” managed a slight edge over Open Road’s “The Gunman.” Neeson’s film, a Warner Bros. release, dropped 54 per cent with its $5.1 million weekend, while Penn’s film debuted in fourth place with only $5 million. “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” one of the better performing R-rated releases in recent weeks, rounded out the top five with $4.6 million in its sixth weekend in theatres. The 20th Century Fox film has now earned over $114.6 million.

Crossdressing can be difficult for family to accept Mailbox
Marcy Sugar & Kathy Mitchell
crossdress to disguise themselves, be more comfortable, act a part or because it is attractive to a partner (e.g., women who wear a man’s dress shirt to bed). That type of crossdressing is fairly common and socially acceptable. For others, there is a sexual component or a release of tension, along with a compulsion to wear clothing of the opposite gender. This type of crossdressing can be more difficult for family members or partners to accept. You can find support and information through The Society for the Second Self (tri-ess.org) and
changed. Also, perhaps she could put a positive spin on things by relishing the fact that her mother is not a busybody who is overly involved in her life. (This happens much more often than the reverse.) I bet as Mom ages, she will try harder and harder to get involved with her grandchildren’s lives, but by that time, it will be too late. Sadly, it will take time for Mom to figure that out. When the board meetings and the fancy car appointments are over, Mom will be a bitter old woman. -- Better Approach Dear Better: You could be right. Sometimes withholding one’s attentions makes you more desirable, although it would take a major behavioral adjustment for the daughter to behave in an indifferent and uncaring way.
But Mom may never quite care enough about missing out on one set of grandchildren. She has another set whom she favors, which is also part of the problem. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy

Dear Annie: I read the letter from “At a Loss for Words,” the daughter who is constantly hurt by her mother’s lack of involvement with her children. She could work on changing her own behavior toward the situation. She has taught her mother how to treat her by always being loving and kind in spite of Mom’s narcissistic attitude. Perhaps she should take a different approach and just invite Mom to her children’s events with only brief notice and no expectation that Mom will show up. The more distance she puts between herself and her mother the more Mom will want to be involved, because she will wonder why things

Dear Annie: I’m a 24-year-old male who has been crossdressing since the age of 8. It started with collecting my own bras and panties, and now I have an entire wardrobe of women’s clothing. Because I currently live on my own, I change out of my male clothes into my female ones as soon as I come home from work. I’ve also had very serious thoughts and dreams about being a woman. This is confusing to me, and I want to know whether there is someone I can talk to about these feelings. I’m way too scared to come out to family or friends because of what they would think. -- Lost in Ottawa Dear Ottawa: Crossdressing is not as uncommon as you might think, and there are many reasons. Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort sold to Lower Kootenay Band Submitted Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort, a popular Kootenay Lake tourist destination, is being purchased by the Lower Kootenay Indian Band, Chief Jason Louie announced on Thursday. The acquisition, which will see ownership change hands in April, is an important economic develop investment for his people, and it has historical significance too, he said. “The Lower Kootenay Band has a history with the site that dates back hundreds of years,” he said. “The Ainsworth Hot Springs are known by the Ktunaxa people as ‘nupika wu’u’, which has a literal translation meaning Spirit Water.” The resort, located 22km south of Kaslo on the west shore of Kootenay Lake, has been family-owned since 1962. Current owners Norm and Joyce Mackie purchased the property from Joyce’s parents, Sam and Belle Homen, in 1979. The Lower Kootenay Indian Band is one of Four Canadian and two US communities that comprise the Ktunaxa Nation. Lower Kootenay (Yaqan Nukiy) is located in the Creston Valley and has a population of about 250. No immediate changes are
planned for the resort, Louie said. He and band representatives met with resort staff on Wednesday to announce that all employees would be kept on. LKB will be investing in capital improvements at the resort in the near future. “The resort will provide meaningful employment and business opportunities for the citizens of Yaqan Nukiy and local residents, and will continue to be a major tourism destination of the region,” he said. The resort currently provides about 50 jobs in the management and operation of the hot springs, 41-room hotel and restaurant. “We are privileged and pleased to enter into this purchase agreement with Chief Jason Louie and the Lower Kootenay Band,” Norm and Joyce Mackie said in a written statement. “The resort has been a family affair since 1962 and transferring ownership is a daunting experience. “This has been a wonderful 35-year ride for our family. Probably the best part for us has been to watch young people, in their first job, come to work with us, and become self-assured contributors to the work force. Many of these people come back to visit and tell us this was probably the

This is truly gratifying.” One of the goals for the new owners is to work closely with Ainsworth area residents and to continue to build relationships to strengthen the area’s tourist economy, Louie said.
“The Spirit Water has been medicine for healing various ailments that the human body experiences,” he said. “This business venture reconnects our First Nation to a significant cultural site of the Ktunaxa people. “The Lower Kootenay Band
will continue to strive for excellence in hospitality and experience. Professional development will be ongoing and customer service will remain a priority.” For further information contact Chief Jason Louie at 250254-2584.
