Skier: Accident impacts ski community tler Mountain. They had just completed a challenging run on Blackcomb and were on their last run when he slipped and fell over a cliff. He was skiing on terrain that was well within his capabilities when the accident occurred. His teammates reached him quickly and their coach, a trained paramedic, took control of the situation and immediately called for ski patrol who arrived within a few minutes. Despite their best efforts, Anderson succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Anderson had been a member of the Mt. Washington Ski Club for over 10 years and was a committed ski racer, representing his club provincially and nationally. “He was a talented athlete who found joy when skiing,” the MWSC statement says. “He loved to spend time with his teammates, and liked nothing better than carving turns on the race course or in fresh powder. “He was also an emerging leader and the younger club athletes looked up to him for his skill, ready smile and easy going manner.” Head Coach John Trimmer said, “He was a tremendous teammate

who was loved by all. Cole was an outstanding young man, a leader and role model for our younger racers and he will be greatly missed. Cole has been skiing since he was two, he was a great skier and winner of several awards “We would like to thank the community for the love and support they have shown to the family and our club.” Bruce Goldsmid, BC Alpine Ski Association CEO said, “We are shocked and saddened by this tragic accident. On behalf of the alpine ski racing community, our thoughts are with the Anderson family and the Mt. Washington Ski Club. The ski racing community in British Columbia is like a family and we are all devastated by this loss.” The impact of Anderson’s death was felt in School District 72 as well. Anderson was a student at Timberline School. “Everyone in School District 72 and the Timberline school community were saddened to learn of Cole’s passing and we express our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and loved ones,” Superintendent Tom Longridge. “Cole was an accomplished athlete, a good student, and a kind-hearted

young man who will be deeply missed by those who knew him. “Our focus now is on supporting Cole’s family and friends and the Timberline school community through this difficult time. Getting the word out about epilepsy

ampbell River teenager Hannah Taylor and her friends are breaking out the purple balloons and dressing in all-purple tomorrow. That’s because March 26 is Purple Day, a day dedicated to spreading the word about epilepsy. “We celebrate purple day to raise epilepsy awareness,” Taylor said. Purple Day was founded in 2008 by nine-year-old Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia. She knew that other medical conditions had awareness days and she wanted to start

one for epilepsy. She chose the colour purple because of its similarly to the colour lavender. Lavender is the colour associated with epilepsy awareness in Canada. Epilepsy is a medical condition that causes a person to have recurring seizures. These seizures are caused by excessive discharges of electrical impulses in the brain. There are more than 20 different types of seizures. Seizures can vary in frequency and severity. In some people with epilepsy, seizures happen only occasionally;

for others, it may happen up to hundreds of times a day. Anyone can develop epilepsy at any age. most people realize. In Canada, approximately 300,000 people have epilepsy and worldwide, approximately 65 million people have epilepsy. Wage imbalance revealed in study A study by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business that was released on Monday indicated that public sector wages are 10 to 15 per cent higher than comparable jobs in the private sector. Wages for professions such as police officers and firefighters were not taken into account, as there is no comparable private sector positions. However, positions which are part of both public and private sectors were compared for the CFIB’s “Wage Watch” report, the sixth in the past 30 years. CFIB vice-president Ted Mallett outlined the differences between the two sectors. “In the private sector, (compensation is) market tested,” he said. “If wages go up too much, businesses struggle, they end up closing doors or cutting back. If wages are too low, then the business doesn’t attract the right kind of labour and it suffers as well.” The report takes its data from 2010 information contained in Statistics Canada’s 2011 National Household Survey. Wage increases were non-existent for most employees in 2009 and 2010. Meanwhile, wage increases for government employees continued ticking along. While there has been a slight reduction in annual increases from the four per cent range to around two per cent, most public sector employees are likely making about 15 per cent more than they were in 2008. In years past, public sector wages were often at or even slightly below comparable private sector wages. There was a reason for this — there was more job security in the private sector; there were generous benefits; and there was (and is) a fully-indexed pension plan, which long-term employees could often start collecting from as early as 55. However, in the past 20 years or so, the wages paid to public sector employees have ballooned. This has happened as job security in the private sector has been substantially reduced. While there was a booming private sector economy in B.C. from 2000 to 2008, many traditional well-paying jobs disappeared to contracting out, new technology or intense competition. Some new, well-paying jobs appeared, but in many cases, these require a very high level of education and skills that only a few people have. The 2008 downturn intensified that trend and there has been only minimal replacement of many of the jobs that have been lost. Many people are no longer private sector employees, but have set up their own businesses in an attempt to keep the work coming in. Taxes have not been reduced. In fact, they continue to go up — at all levels of government. While the federal government did lower the GST, there has been no comparable move by provincial or local governments. Salaries paid to public sector workers need a closer look. – Black Press

As much as I enjoy snow, having the fluffy white stuff lingering into late March and even April has got to wear thin. A headline on CTV on the first day of spring read, ‘Cleanup underway after blizzard buries parts of Atlantic Canada’. Can you imagine? More than 50 centimetres of snow fell on Halifax last week and the government even considered issuing a state of emergency. That came on the heels of a 40 centimetre dump across most of Nova Scotia few days prior. So as much as I complain about all of the rain that falls here, I think I’ll be counting my blessings and reminding myself how good we have it here. At least I’m not hearing the words ‘digging out’ at the end of March like they were in Atlantic Canada.

City has no choice on community mail boxes

Community mailboxes will be coming to Campbell River whether the city wants them or not. That was the message from Canada Post representatives at Monday night’s council meeting after Coun. Charlie Cornfield tested the waters. “What if we just don’t want them? Which was my answer to your survey,” Cornfield said, referring to paper and online surveys that Canada Post issued last fall to gauge which type of community mailboxes residents would prefer. Gilles Chagnon, manager of municipal engagement for Canada Post, said the bottom line is Canada Post has the ability to install the boxes but it wants to work with the city to determine suitable locations for the 270 units that are coming. Cornfield tried again. “But not having the boxes is not an option?” he asked.

The response? “It’s not an option for us, we have to do this.” Canada Post says Canadians mailed nearly 1.2 billion fewer pieces of mail in 2013 than they did in 2006 and the corporation has suffered financial loss ever since. But Monica Judd, president of Local 712 of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, challenged that and said Canada Post actually made a profit in the first quarter of 2014 and results from the corporation’s last quarter – the busy Christmas season – have yet to be released. Judd said the decision to convert the remaining one-third of Canadian homes that still receive home delivery, including 8,543 households in Campbell River, came as a shock. “This was a blind side on the employees of Canada Post, on the union and on citizens of Canada,” Judd said. “Canada Post is forcing that change on what seems like an attack on workers and their com-

munities.” Judd said while the city will have input on where Canada Post puts the mailboxes, it’s possible homeowners could end up with a mailbox on the edge of their property. “It will affect the property value of existing homeowners, these boxes will attract negative attention and negatively affect the homeowner who is unlucky enough to be chosen and approved by you,” Judd told council. “These homeowners will have more traffic, litter, vehicles, less privacy and reduce home values.” She said the decision to end door-to-door delivery means that 10 to 15 postal workers in Campbell River are expected to lose their jobs, with an additional 13 temporary, or on call workers, being told to look for other work. Brigid Pomeroy told council Monday night she is one of those employees who will be out of a job. She said while she understands it’s not council’s responsibility to fight for her

job, it’s bigger than that. “I know it’s our fight and it’s not the job of councillors to get involved in our labour issue but this is more than a fight for our jobs, it’s also do we want urban junk on our roadways or park boulevards,” Pomeroy said. “Who will pay for the extra costs of sidewalks, street lighting, snow removal and graffiti removal?” Prior to Pomeroy’s presentation, Chagnon said Canada Post will be responsible for snow and graffiti removal, and acknowledged that the new community mailboxes will be encased in anti-graffiti wrap. Canada Post also has a policy that graffiti will be removed within 48 hours of it being reported. But beyond the aesthetics, Pomeroy also questioned the logistics

of the boxes. “As letter carriers on the front lines, we know every neighbourhood is unique,” Pomeroy said. “I ask all of you to imagine one street in Campbell River – Alder, from 6th to 5th Avenue. How many super boxes do they plan to install? If you’re on the wrong side of the street you would have to walk up to the next intersection, cross a busy street, and climb halfway up the hill to pick up your mail or your parcel. Look at Evergreen and Merecroft, that’s a long block with very little shoulder on either side. There’s hundreds of streets in Campbell River that if you have a mobility issue, it’s a problem, it’s dangerous. It’s a safety issue.” Chagnon said those with difficulty getting to

their mail are asked to get in touch with Canada Post so that their needs can be accommodated. “We have a suite of solutions in place,” he said. Chagnon also said that most Campbell River business who still get door-to-door delivery will retain that service. Of the 964 that get mail delivered to their doors, 91 will convert to a community mailbox. As for residential homes, Cha-

gnon said Canada Post intends to keep residents fully informed of all changes, starting with the homeowner who will have a mailbox adjacent to their property. “We will visit the homeowner and get feedback directly,” Chagnon said. “We will later tell residents where community mailboxes will be placed.” The boxes are expected to be installed by the end of September. “One call, and we’ll do it all”

The federal Minister of National Revenue spotlighted the work of local volunteers while announcing the infusion of an additional $1 million dollars into the government’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Preparation program. Minister Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay and North Island MP John Duncan appeared last Thursday at the Campbell River Women’s Centre, one of at least four locations in the community where CVITP volunteers assist low-income and other needy taxpayers will completing and filing their annual returns. “We’re very proud of our Community Volunteer Income Tax program, which is now in its 44th year of operation,” said Findlay. “And our hosts here (in Campbell River) are celebrating the 10th year of their involvement with CVITP, so that’s a very successful partnership helping many people.” Under the CVITP program, volunteers are trained to provide tax-

preparation assistance at no cost to eligible filers. Those typically eligible for the program are those with modest incomes and simple tax situations and include seniors, students, First Nations members, newcomers to Canada, those receiving social assistance and persons with disabilities. “We have three on our staff who do income taxes, one of them over at the advocacy centre, which is under our umbrella,” said Ellen Latta, board member for the Women’s Centre. “Also, the Welcome Centre and the Salvation Army also do the free income tax, so it’s a real blessing in this town.” Nationwide, the Canada Revenue Agency partners with roughly 2,000 community organizations to provide

CVITP services, which helped 600,000 residents with tax filing in 2014. “This allows taxpayers to understand and meet their tax obligations,” said Findlay. “It also helps them take advantage of our government’s tax-relief measures and benefits.” The $1 million added to the program in 2015 will be used to expand technology and provide additional support to volunteers, including a dedicated toll-free phone service dedicated to CVITP volunteers; more access to online filing and direct deposit options; the My CRA mobile app; and a pair of promotional videos — one for volunteers, another for those seeking services — accessible at www.cra.gc.ca. “You can be proud knowing the hours you invest as a CVITP volunteer make a real difference in the lives

Dinner theatre opens Antics Dinner Theatre will bring the classic three-act play Our Town to Willow Point for a three-night run of dinner and performance beginning tomorrow evening. Music students pay tribute Nearly 300 Campbell River students took a bow in the spotlight last week as School District 72 hosted its annual Music Showcase at Carihi Secondary School. The event, which has taken place in each of the past 15 years, was also staged as a tribute to one of its principal founders. Darlene Ngo taught music in the district for more than 20 years before succumbing to cancer last spring. “We usually use the showcase as a means of collecting donations to

the food bank,” said Jake Autio, music instructor at Pinecrest and Ripple Rock elementary schools. “This year, we asked for donations to the Darlene Ngo memorial fund.” More than $1,000 was contributed during the March 19 concert, bringing the fund’s balance to just under $10,000. When it reaches that threshold, said Autio, it will provide a perpetual $400 annual grant, administered through the Vancouver Founda-

tion. Last week’s Music Showcase featured bands from Carihi and École Phoenix Middle School, as well as elementary choirs from Sandowne, Georgia Park, Quadra/ Discovery, Pinecrest/ Ripple Rock, Cedar and Penfield. In addition, a dozenmember strong fiddle group from Sandowne performed to a packed house in the Carihi gym. After each school’s entrant performed a series of numbers, the choirs combined for

a grand finale performance of Carl Strommen’s “Like an Eagle”, accompanied by the Carihi band rhythm section. The song was used regularly by Ngo for graduation and other ceremonies, and it was also performed in her memorial service following her death last year. “It was a very purposefully chosen song for the finale and tribute,” said Autio. Bill Piercy passed away peacefully on Monday, March 23, 2015 in Comox BC after losing his battle with cancer and dementia. Bill was born June 22, 1936 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He is survived by his wife Mary; son Michael (Louanna); daughter Lynn (Randy Staschuk); grandchildren Bradley, Rachel, Rebecca, Adam and Jarred, great-grandchildren Natalia and Nykayla, and his sister Patricia. Bill began his working career as a Road Surveyor before switching paths to pursue his calling in Education. His first position brought him to Camp 5 where he closed down the camp as the last teacher of the one room schoolhouse. He then moved to Campbell River where he became a fixture in the education system fulfilling roles of Teacher, Vice Principal and Principal at numerous elementary schools as well as a school Trustee before his â&#x20AC;&#x153;full retirement.â&#x20AC;? A special thank you to all health care providers, especially those at Comox Valley Seniors Village, who helped make his last time comfortable. A Memorial Service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Sutton Funeral Home, 502 South Dogwood Street, Campbell River. In lieu of flowers a contribution to the Campbell River and District Adult Care Society would be welcomed.

With much sadness we announce that Fay passed peacefully after a brief illness. Fay is survived by her loving husband Bob, son Mike (Chris), daughter JoAnn (George), son Brent (Michelle). Also missing Fay are her grandchildren Katherine (Dom) Leong, Bonnie Logan, Julia and Anton Milutinovic and greatgrandson Ethan Leong. Fay is survived by her four siblings: John (Grace â&#x20AC;&#x201C; d) McNish, Jean (Al) Parker; Terry (Tony â&#x20AC;&#x201C; d) Lewchuk, Ross (Sharon) McNish. Aunts Alice Scott and Pat Crockett mourn the loss of their niece. Fay leaves legions of Crockett family cousins and nieces and nephews throughout BC. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Vern (Joan) Logan. Born in Comox, BC to Edith and Fred McNish, Fay grew up on Headquarters Road, attended Tsolum School, and then the UBC Faculty of Commerce. After years up north, Fay returned to UBC and earned her teaching certificate. She taught Business Education courses in Victoria and Campbell River at the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Old Junior,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Southgate, Robron, and Carihi schools. Fay lived in Campbell River for over 50 years, and enjoyed many adventures, travels, and family events, including her 50th Wedding Anniversary in October 2014. She cherished all of her family and friends: school chums, ACW, neighbours, bridge partners, fellow volunteers, IOF friends, and Ocean Falls connections. Fay was generous, loving, caring, and devoted. She possessed that marvelous blend of intelligence and wisdom. We miss her positive spirit, her capable ways, her ever-present smile, and her twinkling eyes. Donations gratefully accepted in Fayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name to the CR Hospice Society or Operation Eyesight. The celebration of Fayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life will be 1:00 pm on Monday the 30th of March, 2015 at St. Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Anglican Church, Campbell River, BC. It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Clare Storback. Clare passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Yucalta Lodge in her 80th year. Predeceased by her husband of 39 years Arnold, her mother and father Isabelle and Charles Devine, and twin sister Kathleen. Clare leaves behind her three children, Jon (Leanne), Andrea (Dale), Joe (Tamara) and her four grandchildren, Jacob, Griffin, Maria, and Matthew. Clare was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and moved to Salt Spring Isl in 1939 where she graduated and moved on to attain her teaching degree. Clare moved to Campbell River where she taught at several local schools including both Quadra and Campbellton Elementary. She met and married Arnold Storback in 1960, and together they raised their family. Clare was an avid badminton and tennis player. She enjoyed volunteering with youth soccer and the North Island Co-Op. She will be remembered for her generosity to others and spending social time with friends and family. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and support staff at Yucalta Lodge for their patience and care of our Mom and Nana. The Strathcona Regional District board of directors has approved a request from another property owner who wants his two properties included in the Quadra Island sewer project. It’s not the first time that Quadra Islanders have come forward wanting to be a part of the project since the Quathiaski Cove sewer extension was approved in a 2014 referendum. Two properties on Pidcock Road were added to the sewer boundaries a couple of months ago. While the most recent request was approved by the board at its March 11 meeting, there may not be enough time to include the two new additions in the first phase of the sewer project. “Further investigation is required to determine if it can be done in the current phase of the sewer extension, or in the second phase that may be pursued in the future,” wrote Patti Wells, the regional district’s operations engineer, in a report to the board. “The current phase one is in the design stage and is expected to be tendered (this month). “The inclusion of these two subject properties will require the amendment of existing or the creation of new establishing bylaws to determine the boundaries for the ‘inclusion-project’ and authorize capital cost expenditures.” The sewer project, which extends sewer service on Heriot Bay Road

and out towards the foreshore and Pidcock Road areas of Quadra Island, will serve 38 properties, up from the original 36, which are each expected to pay $9,100 plus an additional cost to hook their property up to the sewer line – a cost which will vary from home to home. Wells warned, however, that the same cost may not apply to additional properties who ask to join. “This same ceiling amount may not be possible for latecomers as the cost of extending the sewer line and potential proportional contribution from Community Works Funds from Electoral Area C still needs to be determined,” Wells wrote. “The inclusion of the two additional properties within the current phase one sewer extension project will result in the interim, financing costs between $3,000 and $5,000 and will potentially require an increase in the C ommunity

Works Fund allocated to Electoral Area C for this project.” The board has already approve d sp ending $392,400 from the Community Works Fund, which is made up of Gas Tax funds from the federal government, on the project. That injection of funds lowered the original price of $16,630 that property owners were first being asked to pay. The project originally failed after the regional district did not garner the necessary support through a petition. But once the Community Works Funds were applied, and the price went down, Quadra Islanders changed their minds. A referendum was held last summer and 18 of the 36 affected property owners, or 55 per cent, voted in favour of moving ahead with the sewer extension. Phase one of the project is expected to be constructed over the course of the summer.

The city issued a Request for Proposals following the signing that will allow the facility to not only deal with organic and yard waste but also accept and process dewatered biosolids from the Norm Wood Environmental Centre. The city’s biosolids are currently digested at Norm Wood but if that practice continues, the biosolid treatment plant will need to be expanded long-term. Zirnhelt said if the Ministry of Environment rules that those biosolids can instead be composted and the digester is no longer needed, the city may be able to save up to $3 million by not having to invest in a new digester. There could also be a savings in user fees for taxpayers. Zirnhelt said if the city is able to secure 100 per cent capital funding from the Strategic Priorities Fund, combined with the annual funding Campbell River receives from Multi-Material BC, the city could not only offer curbside organic collection but also offer year round yard waste collection, which would result in a savings of $1.27 per household. “So we’d be able to offer expanded services at a reduced cost,” Zirnhelt said. Lewis Mason hooked a monster steelhead the pair estimated at approximately 30 pounds. “Unbelievable size,” Mawhinney said. “This size of fish probably only happens a handful of times in all of B.C. in a decade.”

The actual weight is uncertain since the pair released the male steelhead “to live and spawn another day,” said Mawhinney. Mason spent nearly an hour carefully playing the buck on a small fly rod with six-pound test line. “It was our first time fishing on the river and we really had no idea there were fish that big in the river — hence the six-pound test,” said Mawhinney. “It’s a miracle that he managed to pull it in.” The pair snapped a few photos before turning the steelhead loose.

Connor Logan broke in on the left wing, faked a pass to Will McNamara, and tucked a quick wrist shot over the shoulder of Cougar’s goaltender Anthony Ciurro. Gage Colpron made it 2-0 early in the second with a shot that bounced off Victoria defenseman Ryan Buse and fluttered into the net. Linemate Michael Olson upped the lead to 3-0 at 9:46 of the middle frame, stick-handling his way in front of the net and stuffing the puck past Ciurro. The Cougars, to their credit, made a game of it in the third. PJ Heger scored unassisted at the 5:04 mark, and Victoria was awarded a penalty shot three minutes later when Lane Van de Wetering was hauled down on a breakaway by Kobe Oishi. VIJHL league president Myles Parsons had to wait several minutes as the celebrations continued before awarding the Brent Patterson Memorial Trophy to Storm owners Linda and Kevin Spooner, and team captain Jordan Rauser. The Storm will represent the VIJHL at the BC Junior ‘B’ Finals, better known as the Cyclone Taylor Cup. The four team tournament is scheduled for April 3 to 6 in Mission.

ICE CHIPS: The Storm only lost one home game during regulation time this season. Their overall record, including playoffs, now stands at 51-5-1-4. Jesse Michel and Riley Welyk split the goaltending duties in the Victoria series, each winning
