Medical grow not wanted in Whonnock Residents concerned about ground water By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
Some 300 neighborhood residents packed Whonnock Lake Centre on Monday to declare their opposition to what would be one the largest medicinal marijuana grow operations in North America, in the rural area of east Maple Ridge community. They said the 97,000-square-foot greenhouse project would threaten a limited supply of groundwater, could bring a criminal element, could pollute a salmon-bearing stream, will lower property values, and would be out of place in the residential area. There was also frustration that the process had kept them in the dark about the project – some said they were lied to about the nature of the operation, told it was for silviculture. Daniel Sutton, CEO of Vancouverbased Tantalus Labs, stood at the microphone and calmly tried to answer their questions, and listened while they vented frustration. Harold Mischke said his property overlooks the proposed structure. “Hello neighbour. I wish I had never seen your face. Simply because it’s the wrong place. Not because of what you’re doing – where you’re doing it, he said. “We’re going to put you on notice, we will not go away. This is just the start, and the gloves will come off, he added, to applause. Klaus von Hardenberg, who started the Thornhill Aquifer Protection Study, studying groundwater in the area known as the Grant Hill aquifer, said even small wells can drop water levels in neighbouring ones. s flames surrounded them, firefighters lifted fallen debris off an elderly woman trapped on an apartment balcony Saturday morning and carried her down a truck ladder to safety. She was one of several such rescues made by Maple Ridge firefighters as they responded to an initial call, around 6 a.m., of an explosion at the Sunrise Apartments, 22292 – 122 Avenue.
More than 100 tenants are now without a home. The city’s emergency response team and other community organizations are assisting them, as the apartment building is now uninhabitable. Multiple calls to the fire hall followed the first one. Flames were visible at the rear of the building when firefighters arrived, said chief Dane Spence. Many tenants were able to escape through smoky hallways, but others were stranded on their balconies. Firefighters used ladders to help three down from their third-storey apartments. They

were able to transport an elderly man in a wheelchair down a stairwell. Then they heard “a very faint call for help, Spence said. Drywall from the ceiling had fallen on a elderly woman, who lay trapped halfway on to her balcony. “She had some mobility issues, Spence said. “She really couldn’t assist the crews as they carried her down the ladder. Spence added that the operation was harrowing for firefighters – one complicated in that the older four-story building did not have sprinklers. A municipal bylaw requires
that all new apartment structures or replacement ones have them. Firefighters from Pitt Meadows assisted those from Maple Ridge on Saturday. They got everyone out safely. TransLink provided a bus to keep tenants warm and dry at the scene. A number of tenants were taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation and shock, according the Ridge Meadows RCMP. All have been released, and none were seriously injured. All occupants of the apartment building are temporarily without a home. See Fire, 4

Target’s last day will be Monday No new tenant for vacant store at downtown mall By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
The Target department store at Haney Place Mall will be among the first to go. The bankrupt retailer will close its doors for the last time at the downtown Maple Ridge mall on Monday, and so far no new retailer has been announced to take its place. The U.S.-based department store chain announced the timing of store closures across Canada this week, but it was no secret to Target shoppers. Huge signs in the Haney store said “Last Eight Days,” and “Everything must go” on Monday. Almost everything has gone. The upper floor has been stripped of everything except a few stacks of merchandise, such as lamps and fans, in boxes stacked in small piles, most marked 50 per cent off. Downstairs there is still shopping to be done, and there are long lines of customers at the tills, taking advantage of the closing out promotion prices. Deanna Granata said she’s disappointed Target is closing. The stay-at-home mom with three young boys stopped by Target Tuesday for one last shop, picking up a number of items that were discounted. “Target was our only big department store in Maple Ridge. For people who like to do their onestop shop, this was it for us. It had food, clothing, home essentials and a pharmacy, which was really convenient. So yeah, I will miss that,” said Granata. While disappointed, Granata said she’s not surprised they are closing their doors. She said the quality and quality of their merchandise didn’t meet her expectations. “They didn’t really compete on price like I thought they would,” said Granata. “I would really like to see a Canadian store move in here.” Narland Properties is the mall owner, and staff said they have no information about a new tenant for the building, on which Target spend $10 million renovating after purchasing the former Zellers site. Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read said city hall expects the store to have a new occupant relatively soon, but the site won’t change hands for a couple of months.
Tim Fitzgerald/THE NEWS
Deanna Granata and her son Luca visited Target one last time Tuesday before it closes. “I’d like to see a good retailer in there, but basically they have a process in place where somebody assumes the lease,” said Read. “Our latest information is we’ll know by the end of May, early June, who has taken over the lease.” She said it is a key property in the downtown core. “I don’t think it’s going to sit empty long. Definitely, it’s a priority to us, so we want to make sure it doesn’t sit empty. “Anybody coming in, we want them to add to the vibrancy of the downtown area.” Ineke Boekhorst, of the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association, hopes the loss of the major retailer does not change shopping habits before a new tenant is found. “Maybe people will stay with the smaller businesses – that’s what we hope,” said Boekhorst. “And
that it’s filled soon.” Boekhorst has heard from shoppers that they were not happy with what Target was carrying anyway, so it will not be missed; but also that it was convenient for seniors living near the downtown core. There are 17,600 workers across Canada about to be laid off from 133 Target stores, in the biggest private sector closure in recent history. Employees have been promised 16 weeks severance pay. There have been 16 locations closed. On Monday, the Haney Place Mall Target will be joined by those in Vernon, Saanich, Toronto, Orillia and Sudbury, as the latest closures. On April 1, more stores will close, bringing the total to 46. The prescription information from the Target pharmacy has been transferred to the pharmacy at Extra Foods in Haney Place mall.
‘12 more similar applications’ “What concerns us most is the sheer size of your operation,” he said. Sutton said that the company is having a hydrology study of the area done, and he would provide TAPS with a copy. What’s more, he said Tantalus is legally responsible for ensuring no neighbours’ wells are affected by the operation. “We were aware from the beginning that this [water usage] was a critical issue for this area,” Sutton said. He added that a cistern on the site
would capture rainwater, up to a million litres, and be stored for use during water shortages. He also assured residents that the company can fulfill a zero odor mandate through a filtration system. However, Patricia Purdy noted the area does not have the infrastructure to support intensive agriculture or industry, noting there are frequent power failures and “severe annual water shortages.” Many residents have to truck water to their properties. “The development being dis-
cussed is not one that should be permitted in what has been a quiet, subtle, rural residential area for over a century,” she said. Purdy also thinks the building would be an eyesore, with a barbtopped fence and security lights. “It’s probably going to end up looking, at best, like Matsqui penitentiary,” Sutton answered that security lighting is all infrared, so not to disturb neighbors at night. Sutton also said the creek is essential to the facility, and the company is required by law to protect if from
pollution. Tom McLennan said the operator acknowledges that there is a risk in that there could be attempted thefts of a marijuana crop. “If you knew we would have a criminal element here, why would we want it,” he asked. “Is this facility suitable for a rural residential area, with a Montessori school across the street from the grow-op?” Sutton said that security measures would include cameras and motion sensors, but not armed guards. Sutton refused to state how many plants the facility would house once in full production. But there were gasps from the audience when he said plants nearing full maturity each require two to
Edge towers need more time By Ph i l M e lnych uk pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
The plans to put up a steel-andglass four-tower condo complex in the downtown needs more time to work out the details. Gerald Chiang, with Ascent One Properties, said the application for project has received a year’s extension from the city. Chiang said the four towers, planned along Brown Avenue and Edge Street, are all interrelated. The key, he added, is to get the first tower, to the west of the city’s parking lot on Brown Ave. built first. Ascent One recently reached an agreement to buy that parking lot from the city in order to create a continuous piece of property for the development. “The process of getting through to fourth reading is pretty complicated,” said Chiang. The city wants to ensure there’s enough room for a bike lane on Brown Ave. Three buildings are planned for Edge St., with one of those on the corner of Dewdney Trunk Road. Another tower goes up on the corner of Edge St. and Brown Ave., while another will be built farther to the east, adjacent to the city parking lot. That’s known as building one and has to be built before the other buildings, including a fourth 18-storey tower to the east on Brown, are constructed. The three-building complex is proposed to be built over eight years and will have 240 residential units. The fourth tower will have another 126 units. Chiang said the development will be comparable to the residential towers in Port Moody.
seven gallons of water a day. “I’m a bit taken aback by the number of gallons per plant,” said Mayor Nicole Read. She added that there are 12 other similar applications for around the city, and that it is looking for ways to better inform neighbourhoods about them. Others may also plan to rely on the same aquifer, Read said. Tantalus Labs must build its facility, then have it inspected by Health Canada before it can be licensed. If it is not approved for medicinal marijuana production, the company has a contingency plan for the site. Residents are urging a letter campaign to Health Canada.

Wheelchair ramp stolen By M i chael H a ll newsroom@mapleridgenews.com
Louise Kirk loves to camp at Rolly Lake, but might not be able to this spring as thieves stole the wheel chair ramp from the back of her van on
Sunday. Kirk, her right side mostly paralyzed from polio, gets around in an electric wheelchair. Her brother purchased and installed a ramp on the back of her van so she can get around, given
that operating a manual wheelchair is difficult for her now. Kirk, 67, lent the silver and blue Chevy Astro van to a friend, who needed it to get to a doctor’s appointment on Monday. That friend

“Emergency social services have worked tirelessly to ensure all people affected have temporary accommodations,” said RCMP Cnst. Amanda Harnett. A reception centre was set up at the Greg Moore Youth Centre to provide residents with a warm place to stay, meals and assistance.
The fire department is working with residents to provide access to safe areas of the building so that they can retrieve their possessions, according to the City of Maple Ridge. Water and fire damage to the building is extensive, and it will not be habitable for some time. The City of Maple Ridge Emergency Sup-

Fire Donations and Support” was established by community volunteers. Anyone with items available for donation you can become part of this page and post a list and photos of the items available. Many of the residents of Sunrise Apartments are attempting to locate new permanent residences and may take several days or weeks to secure permanent housing and a place to put donations. The most sought after donation is cash, as some affected by the fire do not have insurance and will need money to ensure that they can relocate and replace lost items. The Maple Ridge Christian Reform Church has set up a bank account at Westminster Savings for donations to the Sunrise Apartment Fire fund. The church will administer the funds to help residents of Sunrise Apartments. All of the residents’ pets have been accounted for and are being sheltered or have been reunited with their owners. For additional assistance, contact the Facebook page administrators. RCMP and the Maple Ridge fire department are investigating the cause of the fire. Spence said it’s too soon to know. Firefighters, in returning to the apartment building, retrieved more than 50 cats, a snake and a reptile of some kind from various suites. “It was a close call for all,” he added. The Canadian Disaster Animal Rescue Team has taken in most of them. • Contact the Maple Ridge Emergency Social Services team at 604-467-7301.

volunteer group has formed to transport drunk drivers in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows home safely. Jose Arturo Zacaria Mendoza is a cab driver and, along with Kelly Dutz, one of the founders of the nonprofit Don’t Drink and Drive Society. His group started offering rides by donation in December, and has given between 10 and 15 rides on each of Friday and Saturday nights. Mendoza said the society is intended to be a last resort, only for those who have tried unsuccessfully to get a ride from a friend or cab. “We are all volunteers, trying to help that big problem we have not only in this community, but the whole country, which is tragedies caused by drinking and driving,” said Mendoza. He was at Pitt Meadows council last week, asking for the city’s support of the initiative, and also met with staff from Maple Ridge. “If you have the backup of the city, the public will have more faith in it,” he said. When Mendoza was a child growing up in Mexico, his brother was hit by a drunk driver. The five-yearold had been holding his mother’s hand as the two walked. “My brother got killed, right before my

mother’s eyes,” he said. “I’m a direct victim of it [impaired driving].” He drives a taxi and sees impaired drivers when he stops at bars to pick up his more responsible fares. “As a taxi driver and limousine driver, it really hits me. It hurts me when I see people stumbling, and then get in their cars and drive away.” There are about 55 members of the new society. Some are volunteer drivers, whom he calls “angels of the safe roads,” and some only use the service. A majority of the members have been caught driving while under the influence, and faced driving prohibitions and vehicle impounding. Mendoza said the group charges no fees or dues, but does accept donations when the service is used. He said donations should be less than what the user would pay for a taxi, and are completely optional – he doesn’t want people to drive drunk because they don’t have any money left for a ride. Mendoza said cab companies have not complained about the service, and he doesn’t expect them to – because when the bars are closing on a weekend night, the demand for taxis overwhelms them. “We want to be the last option, before people grab the wheel,” he said.

Consumption For those who drink responsibility, the opening up of B.C.’s liquor policies can only be a good thing. From Sunday openings at B.C. government liquor stores to the convenience of B.C. wine availability at grocery stores, buying booze will become more convenient. But make no mistake, competitive pricing will also be necessary in this new environment. The government has already promised to level the playing field with wholesale pricing so private liquor stores will no longer be at a disadvantage. It will be up to consumers to determine where they get the most bang for their buck and for the first little while, it’s going to take some comparison shopping. Many fear this switch to a new wholesale pricing system will hike prices of more expensive hooch. Others worry that if the government eliminates tax-in display prices, as it has promised to do to save costs, consumers will end up paying more if the shelf price isn’t lowered to accommodate the change. All this and some worrying secrecy as the government failed to release its prices last week, to the disappointment of many. Meanwhile, private liquor stores, which already have tax-in pricing, aren’t likely to change their system in line with the government liquor stores and so it will be up to consumers to see where they get the most value. As for private liquor stores, will there be lower shelf prices with the promised harmonizing of alcohol prices they get from the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch? Typically, private stores charge a bit more for booze, because they’ve been paying more to obtain it, but consumers will want to see if private retailers are passing any savings on to customers. Where all this will lead is uncertain, but the province undoubtedly doesn’t want to lose its competitive advantage because booze revenue provides a hefty sum of cash to government coffers — as much as $4.3 billion, according to the B.C. Government Employees Union, which represents government liquor store workers. The goal should be responsible alcohol consumption, convenience and competitive pricing to benefit the consumer, as well as a revenue stream that keeps both government and private liquor stores strong. – Black Press

Making progress on poverty VICTORIA – The B.C. government has made its most significant moves in decades to address the needs of some of the province’s poorest people. The largest financial commitment is for a new program to help B.C. Views single parents escape from the welfare trap. Tom Fletcher There are 16,000 single parents in B.C. receiving provincial income assistance or disability payments, most of them women. Even if they could find an entry-level job, it wouldn’t pay enough to cover the child care they would need to go to work. Worst of all, the current system requires that if they enrol in training, they lose their income assistance, including dental and extended medical care for themselves and their children. That is the welfare trap, one of the most perverse government policies to have survived into our supposedly enlightened modern era. The new program takes effect in September. It will not only continue income assistance payments when single parents enrol in skills training, it promises to cover their child care and transportation costs for an approved training program of up to one year. Medical and child care costs will then be covered for up to a year after training, to allow a transition to employment.
Approved training means training for jobs that are identified as in demand, requiring high school and occupationspecific training that can be completed in a year or less. They include retail sales, general office work and assistance jobs in health services. Another overdue policy change is to double the allowable earnings for all income assistance recipients from $200 to $400 a month. This gives people a chance to improve their circumstances by taking whatever part-time or casual work they can manage, without having that little income cut from their already meagre welfare cheques. And then there was the recent decision to end the claw-back of parental child support payments from income assistance payments. The province has for many years run a costly child maintenance enforcement program to track down (mostly) deadbeat dads and force them to pay at least a token amount to support their children. Now when they pay child support to a single parent on income assistance, they will at least have the satisfaction of knowing the children actually receive the extra benefit. These harsh, historic policies were built around a philosophy that welfare is a temporary last resort, to be withdrawn as soon as some other source of income is identified. That is a valid if unfashionable position to take on behalf of working taxpayers who pay for all this, but it only makes sense if the income assistance recipient has a realistic option.
This week’s question: Do worry about distracted drivers on cellphones? @ Online poll: cast your vote at mapleridgenews.com, or e-mail your vote and comments to editor@mapleridgenews.com
For those who are already in the entrylevel job market, the minimum wage goes up 20 cents an hour in September, from $10.25 to $10.45. This is the beginning of an annual review that will tie the wage to the consumer price index. A paltry sum, to be sure, but anyone who still thinks jacking the minimum wage up to $15 an hour is a magic solution that won’t cost some entry-level jobs is clinging to a socialist dream world.
And then there was the recent decision to end the claw-back of parental child support payments from income assistance payments. • I have been contacted by several low-income seniors who read my recent column on B.C.’s Seniors’ Advocate. They were asking where to find out if they are eligible for support programs such as the SAFER rent subsidy, assistance for Medical Services Plan premiums, property tax deferment and grants to help with home modifications for disabilities. I apologize for this oversight. One place to start is the Seniors’ Advocate toll-free information line, 1-877-952-3181, weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

‘Be impartial’ Rapid bus possible right away Editor, The News: Re: ‘Crushing hill would be a crime’ (The News, March 11). The mayor of Pitt Meadows, who has lived on Sheridan Hill for many years, commenting on the issue? Of course, he would have researched the area when he was a councillor, as neighbours did or should have done before buying in the Polder area. John Becker should not be a spokesperson on this issue, just the facts only. I can think of many places – woodlands, bare land and farm fields – that I played on through the years and have disappeared under housing. As the mayor of Pitt Meadows, he should not be commenting on an issue affecting his neighbourhood. Some issues are not as clear, but this is a land-use issue. Unless the deputy mayor has the same problem, it would be better to have a spokesperson comment on the subject and to sit in the chair as mayor when decisions are made. MLA Doug Bing thinks it is a good thing that Mayor Becker lives there are has first-hand experience? I also understand that the petition by residents against the new proposal is available at the counter at municipal hall. When in the history of Pitt Meadows council has this been allowed before? This must be wrong and should be looked at as any other petition about any subject in any neighbourhood. Does this come under the topic of transparency? Council should be impartial. Annette Code Pitt Meadows @ E-mail letters to editor@mapleridgenews.com
NEW IN TOWN?
EXPECTING OR A NEW BABY?
Editor, The News:  The ballots are in the mail and our tax dollars have been used to try and convince us that we should pay even more into TransLink, so that it too can be spent on projects benefitting others. TransLink urges us to vote yes because if the no side wins, they claim, ‘there is no Plan B.’ They are wrong on all points. There is no benefit for residents of Maple Ridge to vote yes because the prom-
ise of a rapid bus link to the new Evergreen SkyTrain line in Coquitlam isn’t worth it. All this is, is a glorified No. 701 that could easily and cheaply be put into service now by taking one of the already scheduled 701s and make it an express bus direct to Coquitlam, eliminating the tour of Pitt Meadows and the many stops along Lougheed Highway to Coquitlam. Instead, have the route go along Dewdney Trunk Road right on to Lougheed
Highway, instead of going to Pitt Meadows. Have one stop at Harris Road and perhaps one in Port Coquitlam. As far as a Plan B, it is time we say good-bye to Metro Vancouver and get into a regional district that benefits us instead of others. The increase in dumping fees to a minimum of $15 recently passed by Metro Vancouver penalizes Maple Ridge residents because we are the only ones who do not have organized waste pick-
up paid through taxation. Commercial companies have realized a major reduction and the ordinary citizens of Maple Ridge will be paying for it. How much more will it take before we get out of Metro Vancouver and start working for our own benefit? It all starts with a no vote on the Translink ballot. A no vote is the start to a better future, especially for our transit needs. Graham Mowatt Maple Ridge
Fed up with many things about MLA Editor, The News: I am in full support of the recall campaign for MLA Marc Dalton. How can Dalton say he represents his constituents, the citizens who voted him in, when he ran and sat as a Liberal? Now he sits as an independent while he tries to get a Conservative MP seat. If that fails he will flop back to the

Variable speed limits on way on Friday, March 20, to a meeting of the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce, outlining the province’s new 10-year transportation plan. Stone told reporters three pilot areas — west of Revelstoke, around the Coquihalla Highway’s snowshed and at a location on the Sea to Sky Highway between Vancouver and Whistler — will be operational with variable speed limits in time for next winter. Signs and sensors in the road will be tied to the ministry’s trafficmanagement centre in Coquitlam to provide a variable maximum speed for motorists during snow or heavy rains, for example. “The 120-km/h speed limit in the case of the Coquihalla might not be appropriate based on a big dump of snow,” Stone said. “In a matter of minutes, we’ll be able to dial that speed limit down.” The project will cost about $24 million for all three locations. Each section is about 10 to 12 kilometres in length. Stone said the technology is used in other jurisdictions, particularly in Europe. “It’s proven to reduce collisions and save lives,” he said.

Cable and satellite TV companies have been ordered to offer subscribers affordable basic packages capped at $25 a month and a pick-and-pay system to add more individual channels rather than the larger bundles now offered. Customers have complained for years they’re forced to pay too much for packages full of channels they mostly don’t want and that even basic cable costs too much. The CRTC gave cable companies one year to offer the low-priced basic package and until the end of 2016 to offer either individual pickand-pay supplements or reasonably priced small bundles. Basic packages must include all local and regional TV stations, public interest channels like CPAC and APTN, education or community channels, and the B.C. Legislature channel. Ethnic and third-language channels would be in the pick-and-pay universe and providers must offer at least as many of them as they do non-ethnic channels.

CBC’S MARKETPLACE Thanks Bruce I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optometrist. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but GreTat Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. No record sockeye run in ’15 By Jef f Nage l Black Press
It won’t be a super sockeye run this year. But salmon fishermen of all stripes should be allowed to get their nets or lines in the water if advance projections are on target. Roughly 6.8 million sockeye should come back to the Fraser River this summer, plus or minus a few million, if the pre-season estimates from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans are close. That’s well off both the 20 million sockeye that returned last year as well as the modern record of 30 million a year earlier in 2013. Still, it’s a big improvement from the dismal 1.6 million return of 2009 that triggered a federal inquiry. “The productivity of the Fraser seems to be returning to something more near average,” said Mike Lapointe, chief biologist for the Pacific Salmon Commission. He said more than half of this year’s sockeye return is expected to consist of salmon returning to just two lakes. Sockeye returning to Chilko Lake make up a projected 2.4 million in-bound fish and 1.4 million are expected to return to Harrison Lake. “It’s quite concentrated in those groups,” Lapointe said. “They will contribute the bulk of the return.” Chilko and Harrison sockeye are part of the main summer-run group that, as usual, is expected to yield many more fish than the smaller early Stuart, early summer or late summer timing groups. A big run of pink salmon, which come back ev-
ery two years as opposed to the four-year sockeye cycle, is also expected. Lapointe said somewhere between 10 and 20 million pinks are projected. Pinks are expected to peak near the end of August, just two weeks after the weaker late summer run sockeye, which come after the peak of the dominant summer run. That could create a challenge for fishery managers, who must protect weaker runs, such as the late-timed sockeye, while under pressure to authorize fisheries targeting the strong runs. “All these stocks come back with some amount of overlaps,” Lapointe said. “The late runs will be sandwiched between the summer runs and the pink salmon, where most of the harvest is desired.” Heavy fishing of the stronger run groups could put too much pressure on the late sockeye and raise conservation concerns, Lapointe acknowledged. Commercial fishermen will be interested in both the summer run sockeye and the pinks, Lapointe expects, but they may have to be mostly limited to one or the other, not both. Salmon watchers know a supposedly good run can fail to materialize and there are plenty of wildcards in play this year. North Pacific ocean water has been unusually warm from late 2013 through 2014 and that could cause problems for both this year’s returning sockeye as well as the 2016 run, which is expected to be the weakest in the four-year cycle. Warm oceans can de-

He said a continuation of the warm winter and spring into a hot summer in B.C. would be a bigger concern for the survival of sockeye en route to the spawning beds.

Elvis brings friends to ACT Tribute show a nod to his admirations arts@mapleridgenews.com
Oldies concert producer Les Vogt, the former manager for the legendary Roy Orbison, is bringing his show Elvis and Friends show to Maple Ridge. Vogt is the creator of the world’s first impersonator show, Elvis Elvis Elvis, which debuted in 1979. Elvis and Friends will be at the ACT Wednesday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. In 1960, Vogt had a hit record called The Blamers, which remained No. 1 on Vancouver charts for a record-setting 11 weeks. Shortly afterward, Vogt formed a part-
nership with DJ Red Robinson and the pair promoted dances and concerts, hiring most of the recording artists of the day, including Roy Orbison, James Brown, Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie Rich. Vogt continued promoting music in Vancouver throughout the ’60s and ’70s and in 1986 reunited with Robinson to produce the popular Legends of Rock ‘n Roll series at Expo 86. The shows were a huge success and the concept has since become known the world over as the leading name in tribute show entertainment. Vogt said the show consists of a cast of performers supported by of some of the recording artists whose music or live performances Elvis most admired. “Donny Edwards plays Elvis and is considered among the best of the best tribute
artists in the world today,” said Vogt. Other artists are Lou Nelson as Tom Jones, Laura Gillespie as Anne Murray and Bobby Brooks Wilson pays tribute to his famous father Jackie Wilson, said Vogt. Bobby Brooks Wilson, known as Bobby Brooks back in the 1990s, broke into show business portraying Jackie Wilson in the original Waikiki production of Legends in Concert, said Vogt. While audiences found him an unusually close natural look-alike, even for a tribute artist, he later discovered, with the help of one of Jackie Wilson’s acknowledged children, he was, in fact, the biological son of the famous singer. “The resemblance is uncanny,” said Vogt. • For tickets visit www.theactma-

World Water Day in Pitt Meadows Pitt Meadows marked World Water Day on Sunday with activities by the Watershed Watch Salmon Society. The local society says its time to focus public attention on critical water issues and actively work towards measures to address these issues. Lina Azeez of the watershed society said homes continue to

be built without efficient greywater systems, which means “we literally flush clean water down the drain.” Increasing suburbanization means every year more natural space gets paved over, destroying local water systems, she added. World Water Day focussed on the Katzie Slough, which for decades has flowed through
Pitt Meadows, but has been reduced from a vibrant, healthy ecosystem inhabited by a plethora of fish and aquatic invertebrates to serving solely as an irrigation ditch, said Azeez. • More information can be found on the Facebook event page World Water Day. Contact Azeez at lina@watershedwatch.org.

FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENTS
PFEIFER, Bertl It is in great sadness that we announce the passing of Bertl. She passed away peacefully on March 17, 2015. She was born Sept 4, 1923 and raised in Innsbruck, Austria. She is survived by her niece Waltraud and her family in Austria. Bertl moved to Toronto and moved in 1968 to Port Coquitlam, BC. She lived in Pitt Meadows for 9 years. She worked at the German Canadian Care Home in Vancouver as an event planner and translator. She also belonged to the Austrian Club of Richmond. Bertl will be dearly missed by her many friends. Bertl’s strength, independence, kindness and witty humor will be remembered by everyone. We would like to thank all the nurses & doctors at Ridge Meadows Hospital for their care and support. In her memory, please make a donation to your favorite charity. Condolences can be sent to www.mapleridgefuneral.ca
When they moved to Vancouver Island in 1972, Wes taught P.E. and English for 14 years at Lake Cowichan High School. His daughters, Janet and Jacquie, were born there in 1976 and 1978 and he and his family established a solid circle of friends who became like family.
Wes made a career move in 1985 and relocated his family to Terrace where he became Vice Principal of Skeena Secondary School. Since 1987, he has resided in Maple Ridge where he was Vice Principal at Garibaldi High School, Principal at Westview Junior High, and lastly, Principal of Pitt Meadows Secondary school. He positively impacted thousands of students with his “Nobody’s Perfect” philosophy, many of whom reconnected with him years later. He spent the last 12 years of his retirement with his family, enjoying some travel, welcoming grandchildren, riding his tractor around his beautiful garden, having regular coffee times with friends, and he could occasionally be found floating in the pool with a cold one on a hot summer’s day. He will be dearly missed. Memorial Service to be held at Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel (Osborn’s) Saturday March 28 2pm. Condolences may be sent to www.mapleridgefuneral.ca
