To fight the fight, walk the Scotiabank MS Walk Join the fight against MS at the Comox Valley Scotiabank MS Walk on Sunday, April 19 at 10 a.m. The MS Walk is the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada’s largest national fundraiser with more than 160 walks across Canada. The Comox Valley Scotiabank MS Walk is at the Courtenay Airpark - a safe, scenic, wheelchair and scooter accessible route. There are three walk distances to choose from - 3, 7 and 10 km. Dogs on leash are welcome to attend and they will have dog bandanas for sale! Arrive early and enjoy coffee, hot chocolate, a snack, entertainment and fun; after the walk stay for a hot lunch, music, recognition announcements and draw prizes. Register in advance at www.mswalks.ca or by calling 250-3390819 (toll free 1-877339-0819). Register as an individual or connect with friends, family and co-workers and start a team. A team should be comprised of four or more participants, including a team captain. TeamMS perks include a team photo, team captain support, and public recognition for your team and, if applicable, the company or local business your team represents. team participating in the Comox Valley Scotiabank MS Walk: Canadian Tire, Scotiabank Comox branch, Courtenay Pet Centre, Epicure, and Longevity Fitness and Nutrition. Registered walk participants receive a pledge package and access to online fundraising tools to raise pledges prior to the walk. Raise a minimum of $125 in pledges ($35 for children 12 & under) and receive a walk t-shirt and day of event lunch. Raise $250 or more and receive additional fundraising rewards or join the Mission First Club and receive a tax receipt for 10 per cent of the pledges you raise. Last year, Comox Valley Scotiabank MS Walk participants raised $37,527.15! Proceeds from the Comox Valley and Port Alice Scotiabank MS Walks stay with the North Vancouver Island Chapter of the MS Society of Canada. Bridges, blacktop in B.C. transportation plan By Tom Fletcher Black Press A 50 per cent increase in bridge rehabilitation and 1,000 km of highway repaving each year are included in a 10-year transportation plan released Tuesday by B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone. The plan also includes $24 million over three years to pay a provincial share of community airport improvements and an $18 million fund for bike lanes and cycling trails. A province-wide trucking strategy is also included in the plan, which restates many projects previously announced by the government. They include work on a replacement for the

Massey tunnel under the Fraser River in South Delta, planning for a second bridge across Okanagan Lake at Kelowna, and conversion of BC Ferries vessels to use liquefied natural gas. Overall the plan includes $800 million over three years to upgrade existing infrastructure and nearly $1 billion toward expansion of major highways. With an eye to an aging as well as growing population, disabled access projects are to include

accessible washrooms and curbs at highway rest areas and wheelchair accessible taxis in communities around B.C. NDP transportation critic Claire Trevena called the 10-year plan “insulting to the people of B.C.,” with only three years of funding promised and most of the improvements already announced. “There are lots of vague promises that have been made for many years,” Trevena said. “For instance the four-laning of

the Trans-Canada to the Alberta border, finishing off the Cariboo Connector, finishing off bridges. “If you’re investing in bridges, let’s get some strategic analysis of our bridges, and where we need them and how we’re going to pay for them.” With ballots going out to Metro Vancouver voters for a plebiscite on funding new transportation improvements through a regional 0.5% sales

tax, the provincial plan focuses heavily on rural areas. It includes an increase to $270 million over three years to upgrade provincial side roads and $60 million for resource roads in the northeast B.C. gas patch.

Party bus licensing tightened up bus operators to work anywhere in B.C. and add vehicles to their fleet at any time. Stone said strict licensing and display of a special plate will allow police to know where party buses are operating so they can be checked. Transportation Minister Todd Stone announced an overhaul of limousine licensing that will require each limousine or bus with perimeter seating to go through its own inspection and hold a licence. This replaces a “general authorization” limousine licence that allowed party

and then boarding a party bus where she took the street drug ecstasy. Shannon’s death was the first in a series of tragedies with party buses, which have expanded to 4,000 vehicles in B.C. Danielle said her own research showed companies advertising open bars on board.
