Mayor meets minister to talk Colliery dams BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Dam Safety Section hasn’t offered an extension for the Colliery dams and B.C. Natural Resource Minister Steve Thomson won’t usurp the authority of his staff. That’s according to Mayor Bill McKay, who met with the minister and other provincial representatives Monday evening, just four days ahead of the provincial deadline for a Colliery dams remediation plan. McKay called for a meeting in early March as city officials and the Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society remained deadlocked over next steps to address safety hazards at the centuryold structures. City council has since decided to swap remediation of the dams for a revised emergency preparedness, surveillance and action plans to route flood water, and to revive the technical committee, which will meet today (March 26) or Friday. The mayor says there has been no word from provincial representatives whether politicians’ recent decision will satisfy requirements and nothing new came out of the “information” meeting, which included Glen Davidson, director and comptroller of water rights; Tom Ethier, assistant deputy minister for Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations; and Toby Seward, the city’s acting general manager of social and protective services. No city councillors were present. “What’s encouraging is that the minster seems to be taking an ... active role,” said McKay, who brought Thomson up to speed on the positions of different parties and where the city stands with the dams. “When you are at the mercy of a higher authority, you simply hope that if you have conversations and ongoing dialogue with them that they will realize your position and realize the situation you find yourself in and perhaps grant some leeway.” The city will now reassemble the disbanded technical committee to review council’s latest directive around three plans for the Colliery dams, although not all members are expected to return. City of Nanaimo on a costsharing agreement. McKay said the fear is the province could redistribute money for the project, despite assurances otherwise, adding it’s time for council to get on with the budget and “get it done.” Coun. Wendy Pratt also heard the provincial government would have made an announcement had the city passed its budget, but doesn’t believe that means the province will not do so. “It means we don’t have the budget for that particular task yet,” she said. “I believe the budget will be passed and it will be fine.”

Transit expands service in region

I

rEgioNal diStrict budgets additional 2,000 hours. By Karl yu

The News BulleTiN

Transit changes for the Departure Bay ferry terminal bus line are on the horizon, as part of approval of new transit hours for Regional District of Nanaimo Transit. Amongst enhancements, the portion of the ferry service to Country Club Centre will be cancelled, while direct service from the transit exchange at Prideaux Street to Departure Bay will be offered from noon to 7 p.m. on Thursday to Monday – the days with the heaviest passenger load. Daniel Pearce, the regional district’s acting transportation general manager, said the ferry route was implemented in 2013 and changes were expected. It was determined a lot of the ridership wasn’t

going to the mall. “So ideally, we would have service 12, 14 hours a day, seven days a week, waiting with all the ferries, but what we ultimately figured out, with the resources that we had, it would be the best just to operate from the ferry terminal to the downtown and operate on the days of the week the ferry is actually the busiest,” said Pearce. Another change will see a new frequent transit line, 40 Express, added to connect riders from Woodgrove, Nanaimo North Town Centre, Country Club, Vancouver Island University and downtown. The transit expansion was given the green light Tuesday night as part of this year’s regional district budget, with 2,000 annual hours being implemented in 2015 and 3,000 in 2016. According to the regional district, the financial impact for Nanaimo will be about $269,000, with about $92,000

coming from B.C. Transit and the remainder coming through property taxes and the anticipated additional fares in 2015. Pearce said a fare review was conducted in 2013 and a fare hike is currently not planned for 2015-16. “I think in general, as transit expands, it’s a good thing for the regional district as a whole,” said Pearce. “Our ridership’s been increasing. It’s given people more different options for travel choices and increasing the livability of our community, so it’s a very positive thing.” The changes will take effect in September and related information will be made available prior to the summer, Pearce said.

A ‘friend’ of the suspect even contacted the victim to say Brown had slipped into a coma caused by the accident and sent a picture of Brown in a hospital bed. Like the federal Conservatives and Green Party, the Liberals will see an acclaimed candidate in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding for the upcoming election. Tim Tessier, a Nanaimo realtor, is expected to be named at the party’s candidate selection meeting, scheduled for Sunday (March 29) at the Grand Hotel. According to Shaun Govender, Liberal B.C. executive director, there were two candidates, but

one had to withdraw due to personal reasons. Despite the lone candidate, the meeting will still take place, as a matter of protocol. Tessier will join the Conservatives’ Mark MacDonald, Sheila Malcolmson (NDP) and Paul Manly (Green Party) on the Nanaimo-Ladysmith ballot. The 42nd Canadian general election is tentatively scheduled to take place in October.

The Snuneymuxw had not yet responded to the city’s invitation before press time Wednesday, and council has given no direction to rehire a facilitator or its engineering consultants, Golder Associates. Seward said Dam Safety Section representatives also won’t likely attend. In a recent letter to mayor and council, Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society said it hadn’t been contacted to be part of the committee as of Monday and that it appeared city staff have adopted a “do-nothing” approach. Seward told the News Bulletin the city wanted to get through the meeting with the minister first and had to coordinate the committee session, which included advising the province and Snuneymuxw. McKay said the suggestion that the administration isn’t following council’s motions is untrue and he resents the implication city staff are trying to “stall this.”

a storm sewer at the end of Loat Street where it could create a more organized parking space. Signs with concepts for the park will be at the seawall in three weeks to a month and there will be a website for people to provide feedback, according to Poul Rosen, the city’s manager of engineering. “It’s going to change a very important space in the city, we want people to ... support that and agree it’s a good change,” he said. Neighbourhood association member Jennifer Davidson said her group welcomes the upgrades, which it’s been asking a long time for. The sidewalk’s slant has meant people with mobility issues, like older people, can’t walk it and those with strollers have difficulties, she said. A typical sidewalk has a grade of two per cent, but the city reports that along the Departure Bay sidewalk there are spots that hit 10.

Long-awaited changes to Departure Bay’s beachside park could be on the horizon. City staff will pitch a redesigned Departure Bay seawall to residents this spring, as part of a $687,000 upgrade proposed for this year’s budget. The plan is to renew streetlights, culverts and straighten out the slope of the waterfront walkway, which has presented difficulties for seniors and people using wheelchairs and strollers. It’s a fix the neighbourhood association has been calling for to improve accessibility since 2006. The city is also looking to replace

tarfish are dying in Nanaimo due to a flesh-eatinglike disease and there could be a correlation to climate change, according to a fourth-year Vancouver Island University biology student. As part of the Create Conference, a showcase of students’ research and projects, Kayla Balmer said there have been occurrences of sea star wasting disease in the Neck Point Park, Protection Island and Newcastle Island areas. The aim of her study was to record instances of the disease in the area and to find out if occurrences of the disease vary amongst sizes and season. Water temperature seems to play a factor, according to Balmer’s research. “With climate change, that means that the ocean temperature is warming and they found that increased temperature is a huge factor in the intensity of this disease,” said Balmer. She said the disease is waterborne, initially appearing like a white scar with eventual tissue dete-

rioration. It covers the starfish’s entire body and can cause death within days or even within a few hours. “In the summertime, the prevalence is highest then and then, as the months go on, the water cools and all those sea stars that have the disease have died off and then starting December is when you start seeing juveniles, little sea stars ... Will they be able to survive through the summer and reproduce? “We don’t know if it’s getting worse, we don’t know if it is actually going to settle out until we start looking at this summer to see will they

EDITORIAL

Auditor itself needs auditing Creating an overseer to ensure that municipal governments were fiscally prudent in spending taxpayers’ money was not a bad thing, but managing an office so poorly that the auditor itself needs to be audited is. This week the provincial government fired its first-ever Auditor General for Local Government after Basia Ruta’s office filed less than a handful of audits in two years. Reports of poor leadership resulting in low morale and lack of direction led to the Auditor General’s firing with cause. Ruta says she will fight that decision. Premier Christy Clark promised the creation of the auditor’s office during her election campaign to head the B.C. Liberal Party in 2011, saying the office would identify areas of waste and mismanagement, thereby saving taxpayers money. But the situation is increasingly less about saving taxpayers’ dollars and more about saving political face. The NDP suggest rolling the local government office into the provincial Auditor General. But that makes too much sense for a government, especially when the idea is coming from its political opposition. The plan is to find another Auditor General for Local Government and hope that person can sort out the office’s problems. Oversight of any government spending is a positive move but the province risks duplicating that service, especially in larger urban centres like Nanaimo, which has initiated a core-review process. Terms have yet to be defined but essentially a third party will go through the city’s budget with a fine-tooth comb to look for efficiencies and redundancies. Perhaps once they’re finished, these third-party core review folks might consider applying their skills in a capacity for the provincial government. We hear it’s hiring. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith,V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

‘Any team that’s battling through the playoffs this deep is going to have strong character.’

These harsh, historic policies were built around a philosophy that welfare is a temporary last resort, to be withdrawn as soon as some other source of income is identified. That is a valid if unfashionable position to take on behalf of working taxpayers who pay for all this, but it only makes sense if the income assistance recipient has a realistic option. For those who are already in the entry-level job market, the minimum wage goes up 20 cents an hour in September, from $10.25 to $10.45. This is the beginning of an annual review that will tie the wage to the consumer price index. A paltry sum, to be sure, but anyone who still thinks jacking the minimum wage up to $15 an hour is a magic solution that won’t cost some entry-level jobs is clinging to a socialist dream world. u I have been contacted by several low-income seniors who read my recent column on B.C.’s Seniors’ Advocate. They were asking where to find out if they are eligible for support programs. I apologize for this oversight. adjustments.” What choice did we have? B.C. Ferries dictates to us what we must pay, with the agreement of the government, not to mention the millions in assistance the government hands over to them. We’ve had enough. There has been a hew and cry for at least two to three years now to return B.C. Ferries to the government. The private system has not and does not work. Really, this has been talked to death; it’s time for some immediate action to stop the continued gouging of the public.

Re: Price caps limit fare increases, March 19. How gullible does Todd Stone, the B.C. Transporation Minister, think the ferry-riding public is? So we now have ‘price caps’ of nearly two per cent per year for four years starting next year, after a four-per cent increase coming in a couple of weeks. As he said, we are at the tipping point. Yes we are, so we need to roll back prices and thus increase ridership, not add six per cent over the next year. And the ferry commissioner’s report says “ferry users accepted service level

To the Editor,

Terrorism now goes on anywhere in the world besides its headquarters in the Middle East. Many Conservative politicians have spent endless hours of work in discussing the contents of Bill C-51, and I doubt that any one of us has actually read the bill. As I am free of guilt of any kind I appreciate that our government has taken steps to try to keep all of us safer from terrorism.

To the Editor,

The government’s secret police Bill C-51 is reckless, dangerous, and ineffective. It must be stopped.

Re: Target speeders, not leftlane huggers, Letters, March 24. Is the province catering to a culture of speeding? For anyone consistently driving the speed limit, slowmoving vehicles in the left lane are a non issue. What is an issue is the one-upmanship of left-lane speeders tailgating to force other speeders into the right lane.

The new focus on the supposed left-lane laggards apparently arises from the feedback in a study for the Ministry of Transportation, which asked about “slower-moving vehicles” with no mention of speed limit. The study indicated that 42 to 81 per cent of respondents (depending on region) wanted speed limits increased. So essentially it boiled down to asking people

A new Nanaimo event aims to raise the odds of matching patients and stem cell donors. The One Match swabbing event will be hosted Friday (March 27) at Country Club Centre by Vancouver Island University nursing students and Canadian Blood Services to find new donors to sign on to Canada’s stem cell donor network. Chris Barron, Canadian Blood Services’ territory manager for Vancouver Island, says this is the first big push in Nanaimo for potential donors to the One Match Stem Cell and Marrow Network – a list that isn’t currently broad enough. The data bank, part of an international network of registries, is all about matching volunteer donors with patients who suffer from blood-related disease like leukemia, or inherited immune system disorders and need stem cell transplants. Stem cells have to be an almost ‘genetic copy’ for donation and always come from the same ethnic group, according to Barron, who says the list doesn’t currently match the country’s multicultural society with 70 per cent of its donors Caucasian. Sixty per cent

are also over the age of 35. On Friday, Canadian Blood Services will be searching for donors of different ethnic backgrounds between the ages of 17 and 35. Nursing students will dole out information about the initiative and swab interested donors for the data bank. “Our list isn’t broad enough right now. At any given day there’s over 1,000 patients waiting for someone to be a match for them and chances are they won’t find that match,” Barron said. “We need to find as many people and get them on that list as possible whether they be female, male, ethnic or Caucasian, or black or Asian or First Nations. “We just need to make sure we have a large, viable list that is sustainable for Canada.” Courtney Johnston, one of four VIU students participating at the event, pointed out that stem cells aren’t something that could be bought from a drug company, “so in order to fight some of these diseases we need community support.” Potential donors will be entered into a data bank where test results will be compared with any patient in the world needing a stem cell transplant. If there’s a match, it could involve further testing. The event takes place from 3 to 6 p.m. For more information on One Match, please visit https://blood. ca/en/stem-cell/what-are-stemcells. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Water levels are being closely watched by Nanaimo city staff, who will issue biweekly updates on water restrictions. The city announced no changes to watering restrictions with Level 1 kicking in as normal in June. But with no snowpack at Jump Creek and the risk of long stretches of dry weather quickly depleting the reservoir, city staff will closely monitor water consumption, reservoir levels and weather each week. Biweekly updates will include whether the conservation level will be increased. “This year, due to the low snowpack, we want to ramp up communications with the public so there are no surprises if we find it necessary to shift to Level 2 restrictions,” said Bill Sims, the city’s manager of water resources. Level 1 watering instructions mean odd-numbered houses can water on odd days, and vice versa.

Heritage Days in the works Nanaimo Heritage Days events have proponents, potential participants and financial backing, but those elements must be organized to have the event ready for the Victoria Day long weekend. Following the demise of Empire Days, Morgan Carey, president and CEO of Real Estate Webmaster, Jerry Hong, city councillor and owner of the Queen’s Hotel, and other parties entered into a joint venture with Snuneymuxw First Nation in early March to create Heritage Days. Carey guaranteed $50,000 in financing for a parade and fireworks display. The consortium hired Angie Barnard as coordinator to compile sponsorship packages. “We’re evolving as a community and we have the backing of the business community, first and foremost, to create something that’s

very exciting for people – and their main mandate is community spirit and pride of place downtown,” Bernard said. Hong said the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association committed some money. Interest in supporting the event has come from the Young Professionals of Nanaimo, Rotarian clubs and other organizations. Corry Hostetter, DNBIA executive director, confirmed the association has committed $1,500 in cash to Heritage Days, plus staff time and in-kind donations. Hong said the Heritage Days consortium will likely release a formal announcement, complete with sponsorship packages, parade entry forms, volunteer signup sheets and other documents during the first week of April. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Acrylic artist inspired by her surroundings By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN

There is no shortage of colour at one art gallery in the city’s north end. Currently on display at the Art 10 Gallery are nine acrylic paintings by local artist Marilyn Ridsdale, who is the gallery’s featured artist for March. The paintings, which depict many popular locations such as Buttertubs Marsh, Neck Point Park, Westwood Lake, Maffeo Sutton Park, Stephenson Point and the Nanaimo River

are part of her exhibit at the gallery titled, Local Colour II. “They are all local scenes,” Ridsdale said. Ridsdale immigrated to Canada from Wales at a very early age and spent most of her childhood living in North Vancouver. In 1992, she and her husband moved to Nanaimo, where they have remained ever since. Shortly after her relocation to the Harbour City, Ridsdale, who mainly used

watercolours and India inks in her work, decided it was time to explore acrylics. “At that point there were not a lot of acrylic painters in Nanaimo. There were some, but not a lot,” she said. “Most people were doing watercolours and so I wanted to do something different.” Ridsdale, who has since become an acrylic painting instructor for the City of Nanaimo, says she loves enhancing colours and stylizing. “Colour is my No. 1 interest,” she said. “I try to do things like stylize and I sure try to change the colours up.” Ridsdale began painting all nine of the featured pieces on

location, which was a challenge for her. “I usually take photographs, but this past summer a couple of us got together and we went out to locations and started there,” she said. “It was very cool but it was very hard.” Although Ridsdale is inspired by her surroundings, she draws artistic inspiration from the Group of Seven. “They were so brave for their time and I admire that,” she said. “It seems to fit with Canada.” Ridsdale’s work remains on display until Tuesday (March 31). ARTHRITIS I

Pain free in 2 weeks. This is what happened to me personally. I tried drugs, acupuncture, magnets and many other methods. Finally after taking a specially processed shark cartilage I was pain free in 2 weeks. It gave me the idea that I could help thousands of the 5 million men and women suffering daily in Canada with the worst pain on earth to have less pain or no pain at all. Nick A. Jerch, President of Bell Lifestyle. <For 40 years I had injections and drugs and finally Bell Shark Cartilage #1 spared me the endless torture I suffered day and night with 3 bottles costing less than $100. Pat Laughlin, Coldwater, ON. <Cancelled knee replacement. 1 was in pain and limping. Have no more pain now. Can square dance for hours. Anton Melnychuk, Porcupine Plain, SK. <At first I was skeptical. I gradually noticed an improvement. Then I took another brand. I was surprised having so much pain again. Eventually I realized that I needed to re-order Bell. Found relief again. Marie Ciraulo, 72, Oakland, CA. <Many people on our website write: “Can walk again for hours”;”Can climb stairs without #1 NPN 80042283 hanging on to railing”;”First time in 15 years can sleep at night” Rheumatoid arthritis in joints down 90%, same for my sister…Also guaranteed for sciatica. Athlete trades in stick for guitar pick

I

COUNTRY SINGER Chad Brownlee an NHL draft pick. By Nicholas Pescod THe News BuLLeTiN

From all outward appearances Chad Brownlee was living a dream that so many young Canadians can only dream of. The Kelowna native was a Vancouver Canucks draft pick, graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato and found himself as a member of the Idaho Steelheads in a semi-pro league known as the ECHL. Yet, Brownlee was far from happy. “I wasn’t enjoying the game anymore,” he said. “I forgot why I played it and I lost the love for it. “I wasn’t happy going to the rink and sitting on the bench,” he said. “All I wanted to do was hit the showers and go home.” So in 2008, Brownlee quit hockey and turned to country music and by 2009 he had released his first single, The Best That I Can (Superhero). “It wasn’t like I just hung up my skates, picked up the guitar and decided to do music,” he said. “I’ve been playing it

my whole life ... and I picked up the guitar when I was 17, playing junior hockey.” Since 2009, Brownlee has put out three records, with his latest album The Fighters released last June. On April 4, Brownlee, will be performing at the Arbutus Meadows Equestrian and Events Centre at Nanoose Bay with Jess Moskaluke and Bobby Wills as part of the

A word from a

When The Lights Go Down tour. “It’s my first headlining tour,” he said. Brownlee said it was tough to go from a hockey player to musician. “The transition was pretty quick, but that year after hockey felt like eternity because it was such a change in lifestyle and identity,” he said. “You know you’re a hockey player your whole life and then you give it up for something else. It is a tough transition.” However, it was a decision that has played out well for Brownlee, who picked up a Canadian Country Music Conference Best New Artist Showcase Award in 2010 and had his second record, Love Me or Leave Me nominated for a Juno Award in 2013. “Being nominated for a Juno was definitely something special that I didn’t expect at the time,” he said. Brownlee said he has no regrets about walking away from hockey to be a country music singer. “I don’t regret it at all,” he said. “I call it the easiest hardest decision I ever made.” For more information, please visit www.chadbrownlee.com.

If you would like to plug in an all-electric Nissan LEAF at your home, this weekend is the last chance you will have to get one for nothing! British Columbia’s SCRAP-IT Program kindly supplied us with one of the eco-friendly sedans as a prize in our Plug-In to Win Contest, which closes at midnight on Sunday (see below for entry details). The winner will be announced online next week and Driveway will feature an interview with the lucky winner in an upcoming edition. SCRAP-IT announced its new incentive program here last week, which offers a $3,000 rebate for electric car purchasers if they scrap a 2000 or older vehicle. This is in addition to the newly announced provincial government program detailed in our main story today. The LEAF will be on display at the SCRAP-IT booth throughout this weekend at the Vancouver International Auto Show, in the Vancouver Convention Centre West. Qualifying electric vehicles for the organization’s incentive are listed on the SCRAP-IT.ca website. Take a look because some of them, plus vehicles qualifying under the additional government program will be at the show to view and some made available there for test drives outside.

Rally driving as an art form ‘‘

by Alexandra Straub

“Every day’s a school day,” is a popular saying a friend of mine often references. Just because we’re not in a formal establishment, with books in hand, or loose leaf paper in front of us, it doesn’t mean we’re not learning. Some lessons are tougher than others are and we can’t wait for them to be over. Then again, there are some school days we just don’t want to end. One of those days was with the Team O’Neil Rally School located in the middle of nowhere, New Hampshire. The school is housed on close to 240 hectares of land, meaning there’s room to stretch out for those new to the art. I call it an art because it really is. Rally driving is about the fine balance of finesse with throttle, brake and steering input. Like brushstrokes on a canvas. Make a few mistakes and, well, it’s not a pretty picture. In the journey to master

car control skills, there’s also about 10 kilometres of rally-ready trails – which can be driven in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction to mix things up – so there’s not much room for boredom. While I’d been to the school previously, the conditions were completely different. The dry, dirt-covered earth from summertime was now replaced with snow, ice and all the slipperiness your heart desires, thanks to Old Man Winter. Equipped with newfound knowledge, or knowledge that was sitting on the

shelf and just needed a little dusting off, the short opening classroom session was not only educational, but fantastically entertaining and funny. With that completed, the group of Canadian journalists headed out to our chariots. They just happened to be Ford Fiestas. If Ford’s subcompact wasn’t fun enough to drive in a ‘normal’ setting, it sure was here. The Fiestas have mainly stock components, aside from rollover bars, fourpoint seat belts, Bilstein heavy-duty suspension

components and performance brake pads. Perhaps that’s what was so appealing. Here were these 120 horsepowered cars, slipping and sliding (sometimes) with grace and poise, and the amount of mirth to be had was limitless. The objective of the day was to factor in left-foot braking techniques on an oval, in a slalom and via what rallying calls the Scandinavian flick. It’s frustrating and rewarding at the same time knowing that the difference between doing it correctly or screwing it up is really only within the gentle

Columnist Alexandra Straub gets lessons from Andrew Comrie-Picard. feathering of the brakes or the addition of a little more throttle. Once you find the sweet spot, you want to ride it out for as long as you can. Or until you get too confident and end up in a snow bank! Oops. You still have to be mindful of the surface conditions underneath. But that’s what the school is for. Should your vehicle start dancing when you don’t want it too, you’ll be ready to mitigate damage, or avoid it all together. It gives

you a feel for the everchanging environment and how to be proactive rather than reactive. And while it was all fun and games behind the wheel, it was equally a treat to have a fellow Canuck, a pro nonetheless, take us for a couple of hot laps and show us how it’s really done. Andrew Comrie-Picard was on hand and put my day’s efforts to shame when he combined all the techniques we had learned, blended

PHOTO submiTTed

them seamlessly together, and then did it a hundred times faster. This day, I learned that speed and finesse go handin-hand. That no matter how many times we drove around the same course, it was always different. That school is a lot of fun and that car control is an art. And that I want to be a rally driver in my next life. Visit http://teamoneil.com for more information. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

The latest seventh generation Volkswagen Golf has been a huge hit, winning the World Car of the Year award, along with the North American Car of the Year and several other titles. The effort and billions of dollars, VW invested in its small car platform, called MQB, is at the core of this success. This lighter, yet stronger platform is so flexible the Volkswagen Group has plans to use it for dozens of vehicles throughout

UP TO Thursday, March 26, 2015

VW Golf Sportwagon scores hole in one the many brands it builds. The benefit to the consumer is a vehicle that is lighter, can use a smaller, more efficient engine and, with huge economies of scale, VW can lower the price. The Golf hatchback along with the sportier GTI is available in the market now and very soon the Sportwagon (station wagon), built on the same successful platform, will arrive. What can’t be seen but is instantly obvious when driving is the new 170-horsepower 1.8L turbocharged base engine,

UP TO that is so much more advanced and responsive, compared to the old, less efficient five-cylinder in the previous model. This engine has superb midrange torque and it runs on less expensive regular fuel. It’s efficient too, using 9.5L/100km in the city and 6.6L on the highway. The optional diesel, with 150hp, but more importantly, 236 lb.-ft. of torque is only marginally more efficient, rated at 7.7L city and 5.4L on the highway. Read more at www.drive waybc.ca.

Volvo C30 still looking sharp by Bob McHugh

The Volvo C30 is a compact two-door hatchback that seats four people in uplevel comfort. I’m always struck by how attractive and sharp looking it can still look, when I see one on the road, even though its design dates back to 2006 and Volvo last sold the C30 in Canada in 2013. That distinctive bigglass rear hatch is a tribute to the Volvo P1800, a classic 70s era sports car. We join the C30 story in 2009 when a mild redesign brought new standard equipment and added a

new R-Design package. Heated front seats, front fog lights and an upgraded eight-speaker audio system with steering wheelmounted controls became standard features. A base C30 comes with a 2.4-litre, five-cylinder engine that can produce 168 horsepower. It’s mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or an optional five-speed automatic with Geartronic manual shift mode. Fuel economy is rated at 11.9 L/100 km in city and 8.5 L/100 km on the highway using the new five-cycle method, but premium fuel is recommended.

The T5 edition of the C30 comes with a turbocharged 2.5 litre, five-cylinder engine that can produce 227 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission was standard and it came with the optional five-speed automatic with Geartronic. Fuel economy the same as the 2.4-litre. Volvo uses a quiet, lowpressure turbocharger on the 2.5-litre engine and it’s engineered to provide good pulling power at low engine speeds. Comparing it to the 2.4L, the 2.5L can develop additional torque at an engine speed as low as 1,500 rpm.

The side doors are extra long and allow good access to the rear seats. However, they can also be awkward to open in a tight parking stall. The rear seatbacks split 50/50 and fold to create a flat expanded load floor with 57 litres of cargo room. Even with the seat backs up there’s still 37 litres of storage space. The side-impact protection and the whiplash neck injury protection are just two of the many great safety features built into a C30. Optional advanced safety systems available included a camera-based blind spot information system.

In 2010, Volvo revised C30’s trim line up and it came in Base 2.4i, Premium, R-Design, T5 Premium and T5 R-Design trim levels. The 2.4i engine editions were discontinued in 2011. It also got a styling refresh

that included new fenders, headlights, lower front valance, and honeycombpattern grille with larger badge. Some small changes followed in 2012 and no changes were made for its final (2013) year in Canada.

Compact yet comfortable, the Volvo C30 has a bigger car feel and a sporty, funto-drive disposition, yet it excels in both ride comfort and safety appointments. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Booming business means the company had to find expanded office and dock space with a new location at 1690 Stewart Ave. Calibre Yachts is always looking for fresh listings and is now western Canada’s exclusive dealer for Tiara Yachts.

Chris badger was appointed for a twoyear term. New directors join current chairman Jeet Manhas, vice-chairman Richard Ringma and director Merv unger at the board table.

Nanaimo’s boat show is set to relaunch this week with new organizers at the helm. Waterfront Suites and Marina is bringing back Nanaimo’s boat show on March 27-29 with what organizers say will be a family-friendly and festive event. It’s the first time Nanaimo has hosted marine exhibitors and enthusiasts since 2013 when past organizers – the Nanaimo Port Authority – ended an eight-year run of the Floating Boat and Marine Trade Show over issues from money-making to a pending agreement with Pacific Northwest Marina Group. Odai Sirri, director of operations for the Water-

Odai Sirri, event manager, left, and Nelson Hill, organizer, are steering a course for the 2015 Nanaimo Boat Show. This year’s boat and marine trade show happens at Waterfront Suites and Marina Friday to Sunday (March 27-29) featuring everything from personal flotation devices to multimullion-dollar yachts.

front Suites and Marina, said exhibitors and participants at other boat shows have been asking what happened to the Nanaimo event “because they loved it so much.” “You only hear that so many times before you realize, OK, we’ve got to bring this show back, whatever it takes,” said Sirri, who saw exhibi-

tor space nearly sell out shortly after announcing the show’s revival. The three-day Nanaimo Boat Show happens at the new marina on Newcastle Channel, with more than 40 exhibitors and a range of boats, as well as music, food and face-painting for kids. Carnival tents in the property parking lot will

make it a rain-or-shine event. Organizer Nelson Hill plans to bring in boat show staples and new additions, including entertainment. “We’re trying to make it more of a festival feel at this boat show which is a bit different. Bringing in music and bringing in food and beverage and local craft beers is something that is actually new to boat shows,” he said. “It’s kind of about time that a boat show matures to more than just boats for sale.” It’s also just the beginning for the boat show, with organizers already planning a bigger event next year, according to Sirri. Day passes are $8 and $10 for the weekend. Children under 12 are free. Proceeds will support the John Howard Society of Nanaimo. NANAIMO YACHT CLUB VANCOUVER ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA

The Nanaimo Yacht Clubs docks are bustling again as members come down to get ready for another terrific boating season. Our annual Sailpast is right around the corner, on May 3rd, and will provide an opportunity for Club members to celebrate the opening of the boating season, fly our colours and pay homage to our Commodore Terri-Lynne Campbell. This is usually done with a salute, but being a day of fun, it can manifest itself into something more playful. You are invited to the Nanaimo Yacht Clubs annual Easter Egg Hunt on Newcastle Island on Sunday, April 5th. Nanaimo Harbour Ferries will be providing free rides from Maffeo Sutton Park for children 12 and under accompanied by an adult starting at 9am with the last ferry leaving Newcastle Island at 4:30. The Club will offer complementary hot drinks and Timbits, as well as pounds and pounds of Easter eggs for the kids. The Easter bunny will also be there for photo opportunities. The Nanaimo Royal Canadian Search and Rescue vessel and crew will be on the dock for viewing and demonstrations of how they respond to emergency situations on the water. Our Environmental Committee is looking into how we can once again support an environmental clean-up event, to help keep our coastline and waters pristine as possible. The date has yet to be set, but every day is environment day. Kudos to those who see trash on the walkway and pick it up! Alvie Fairhurst is a legend at the Nanaimo Yacht Club as well as up and down BC coast marine parks. Sadly, we lost Alvie in 2013, but his memory and legend live on at the Nanaimo Yacht Club. In February, 2015, BC Marine Parks Forever Society awarded Alvie a plaque for BC Parks Community Partner of the Year, to honour his 40 years of charting and suggesting safe anchorages and potential marine parks along the BC coast to Alaska. Many of these are enjoyed by boaters from around the world today, including Desolation Marine Park. He also had a hand in securing safe anchorage in Pirates Cove Marine Park and some locations in the Broughton Archipelago. It is no wonder that Alvie is fondly known by many as the Father of our Marine Parks! Our Club was chosen as a suitable site for this prestigious award to be displayed due to the fact that Al was a 57 year member of the NYC. Many of our seasoned racing and cruising members got their feet wet as youths with his mentoring on the water, sailing, learning seamanship and respect of the ocean. We are pleased to announce the hiring of our new Sail Training Administrator, Jon Rose. Jon comes to us with experience and high qualifications for the job. He will be responsible for the sail training programs which fill up fast and offer something for every age from 5+. For more information see: sailtraining@ nanaimoyc.ca. Jon will also oversee our year round junior program for ages 8-25. The NYC Junior Program creates leaders, gives back to the community and develops skills and knowledge through hands on experience, mentoring and workshops. Junior members benefit from professionally organized and

led outdoor experiences, excursions and social events. We have some new toys for our junior members to enjoy. Knowing not everyone is into sailing, we have stand up paddleboards and kayaks for their use. NYC now has a buy sell and trade section on the website. Club members post gently used items, even boats. Purchasing is open to public. Other events in our planning include our participation in the Nanaimo Fish and Game Clubs Family Days. Club members offer their boats and afternoon to take visually and MS impaired out for a harbour cruise. The Nanaimo Yacht Club will host moorage and the awards ceremony for the new Gulf Island Nanaimo (GIN) Yacht Race which starts in Victoria, June 19th and ends in Nanaimo Harbour on June 20th. Mark your calendars! NYC’s annual Cutty Sark SIN Regatta is being held the weekend of July 3-5th. Get your racing machines ready for a weekend of friendly rivalry and competition on the water as well as dockside and in the clubhouse. Once again, our members are entering the Nanaimo Child Development Centre’s Silly Boat Regatta. Plans are underway for our boat design and fundraising ideas.

It is a pleasure to contribute to the community in so many ways. For more information about our Club or becoming a member, please phone and ask to speak to Commodore Terri-Lynne or look at our website.

Nanaimo News Bulletin Thursday, March 26, 2015

www.nanaimobulletin.com

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To Lesley and Kevin at Steve Marshall Ford. Outstanding service from appointment to driving away. This is how service should be done.

BEEF To the two dog walkers on Dover Bay playing fields. One tried to hide her poop bag behind a goal until she was caught by a students arriving for PE class. There was still a ‘surprise’ which one student stepped in.

BEEF To the beefer. I know there are a lot of white vehicles but the newspaper didn’t mention it was a model of sport-utility vehicle which is meant for the mud.

BOUQUET To Buckerfields for generously providing my unexpected foster puppy Magnum with puppy food. BEEF I still see so many people texting while driving or texting while at a red light. Fine them heftily. I lived for 50 years quite well without having to text anyone. So, why the ‘need?’

BOUQUET To the young people playing tennis and disc golf in the pouring rain at Bowen Park on Wednesday. It was so nice to see true West Coasters enjoying the outdoors and taking advantage of this wonderful park.

BOUQUET To my direct supervisors that are still showing a work ethic and leading their team through example in this joke of a ‘wind down.’

BOUQUET To our lovely neighbours, Cathy and Douglas, who are always there for everyone else. You make Nanaimo a more beautiful place to live.

BEEF To the religious group that does not understand the meaning of the word ‘solicit.’ Part of the definition is “to seek to influence or incite to action.” Isn’t this what you are doing when you knock on doors and leave unwanted pamphlets?

BEEF To the patron who hollered profanities at the Terminal Park McDonald’s employee. You have no idea how fortunate you are that you didn’t address your filthy mouth toward me. You kiss your mother with that mouth?

BEEF To the city for promoting the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Celebrating the Irish with their sordid past (think IRA terrorists and snake slaughtering) is just not on. Next year, perhaps we should just have ‘a day of celebration of your choice.’

BOUQUET To Maranne at the Bowen Pottery Studio. She truly goes above and beyond to make all her classes enjoyable for the participants. I will definitely be signing up again in the fall.

BOUQUET To the female employee at the McDonald’s restaurant in Terminal Park. Even though a patron hollered profanities at you when you were on your break, you responded professionally and with a smile to address her concern.

BOUQUET To Bernice at Genesis Hair Studio for the absolutely fabulous job you did on my wife’s hair. I can’t stop looking at it -it’s stunning.

BEEF To Forest Park Elementary School parents crossing busy Bowen Road after school with their youngsters instead of teaching them to safely use crosswalks. One wrong slip and there will be a bad accident. BOUQUET To Kevin and staff at Thrifty’s in Longwood Station for reuniting me with my lost cellphone. Your cheerful smiles and outstanding service are why we keep coming back. BEEF To movie theatres for having the sound up so loud it hurts your ears. I don’t go to the movies much because of this. It would be interesting to measure the decibels of all those explosions, gunfire, music and car crashes. BOUQUET To John and the crew at John’s Bedroom Barn on Bowen Road. A local business that really knows the true meaning of customer service. BOUQUET To whoever found my scarf and tied it to the post at the entrance to Westwood Lake from Arbot Road. It just made my day to find it waiting for me. BOUQUET To Brian Rampanen of Brian’s Painting. He painted our condo and did a perfect job, finishing while we were on holiday. Honest and professional. BOUQUET To Dog n Suds for providing muchneeded socialization at their daycare for Magnum my foster puppy. BOUQUET To Davey Tree for helping rescue a kitty from a tree after more than 36 hours in the Rosstown area when no one else tried to help him. Very much appreciated. BOUQUET To the staff and customers at Shaw Cable who helped my husband when he collapsed there. That was so kind.

MARCH MADNESS

BEEF To trucks driving around with 10 four-inch chrome spikes projecting from the front wheels. A person slipping and falling against these weapons could cause serious injury not to mention the mayhem they will cause in a collision.

BEEF To those men who murdered our precious trees at Beaufort Centre. They were our shade and now we’ll scorch for the summer. Did you really have to go that far to give the medical centre a good view?

Submit your own Beef or Bouquet Beefs & Bouquets is a free forum to give thanks or express views on issues and events. The News Bulletin reserves the right to edit or refuse submissions. Length is limited to 40 words and two submissions per person per week. A winner will be selected at random to receive a floral bouquet from Turley’s Florist and Potting Shed. Mail or deliver to the News Bulletin, 777B Poplar St., Nanaimo, V9S 2H7 or e-mail to bulletinboard@nanaimobulletin.com. Fax to 250-753-0788.

BOUQUET To Jennifer at Step Ahead Shoes at Woodgrove Centre. Thank you for your patience and help in finding me just the right shoes.

BOUQUET To Dallas O. at Nanaimo Toyota. The purple xD is a riot. There are not enough thank yous for your continued dedication, honesty, service and your amazing staff. BEEF To the person who criticized the military museum. I bought a plaque for my uncle who served and I have no idea what rank he was. More than 100,000 Canadians died fighting in two wars and not all of them were generals or admirals. BOUQUET To Scottie G. at Nanaimo Toyota. One hundred per cent-plus attitude, ability, support, perception and going oh so much more than ‘the extra mile.’

________________________________________________________________________________

BEEF To city and transit for doing so little to keep bus stop areas clean – unacceptable to see so much litter at some of them.

________________________________________________________________________________

BOUQUET For the donation of 12 dozen fresh eggs to Georgia Avenue Community School. Very much appreciated by our breakfast and lunch programs.

The boys’ basketball squad started the Junior All-Native Tournament with a pair of wins and as of press time, was in contention to reach the semifinals and finals on Thursday (March 26). The Sons won a physical game against the Maaqtusiis Magic 79-61 on Tuesday afternoon at the Vancouver Island University gym. Fans of both teams made their voices and drums heard at the gym, making for a biggame feel. “It’s good to get redemption on this team – they knocked us out last year, so it’s good to finally beat them,” said Hayden Jeffrey, who scored 41 points in the victory. He said his team played a good transition game early to build a lead, then locked things down defensively. “We just weathered their storm,” Jeffrey said. “When they started hitting a couple shots, we just came back and made ours and went on a run and put it out of reach.” Jordan Gladstone scored 20 points for the Sons in the win. Snuneymuxw started the tournament Monday by getting past Syilx 67-56.

press time. Thursday’s semifinal is at 10:30 a.m. at VIU, with the gold-medal match at 3 p.m. In the girls’ brackets, Snuneymuxw is no longer in contention, but the Nanaimo-based

West Coast team was still in the hunt and played Syilx on Wednesday after press time. The girls’ semis are Thursday at 9 a.m. at VIU with the final at 1 p.m. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

There won’t be three teams on the ice all at once – the idea is that pretty soon, there will be only two left skating. The Nanaimo Clippers began the third round of the B.C. Hockey League playoffs on Wednesday after press time in the Okanagan, part of a threeteam round-robin to determine the league’s two finalists. The Clippers, the Penticton Vees and the Chilliwack Chiefs are the three division champs in the mix. “It’s a unique system that we use with three divisions in our league, and I’ve never been in one of these…” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. “It’ll be unique and different, but we’re just glad to be in it.” Each team could play the other twice, but the round-robin will continue only as long as all three teams are mathematically in contention. That means that the Clippers could advance after as few as two games – last night’s road game against the Vees and a home game Friday (March 27) against the Chiefs. “We’re going to treat it like a regional tournament where every game is important, like a Game 7,” said Jason Tatarnic, Chiefs coach. “Hopefully we’ve prepared our guys for this. I think nerves and composure will be important as we go forward.” The Chiefs swept the Prince George Spruce Kings in the Mainland Division final, while the Vees needed seven games to eliminate the Vernon Vipers and the Clippers also needed seven games to get past the Powell River Kings. Nanaimo also went to Game 7 in Round 1 against the Alberni

Valley Bulldogs, so they pretty much played the equivalent a quarter of a hockey season in a 19-day span this month. That won’t slow them down, said Cole Maier, Clippers forward. “Everybody will be going. It’s playoff hockey,” he said. “There’s definitely guys that have their bangs and bruises, but everyone’s playing through it.” And the Clippers will be mentally prepared, too, said the coach – they’ve proven repeatedly this post-season that they can rise to the occasion. “Any team that’s battling through the playoffs this deep is going to have strong character and we’re no different,” Vandekamp said. “Our kids have worked really hard this year, they’ve come together very well as a group and we’re proud of what they’ve accomplished so far.” GAME ON … The Chiefs visit the Clippers on Friday at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. Senior B Timbermen will change their logo, team name Lacrosse Association teams. “[It’s] just to keep the logo fluid from the start to the finish, from tyke all the way up,” said Shawn Swanson, the club’s general manager. “It was something that kind of needed to be done and we wanted to do it.” The logo is slightly different from the NDLA version, as the ‘N’ has been removed from the background.

BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BuLLETIN

The Nanaimo Timbermen senior B lacrosse club will kick it old school. The city’s West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association club decided this off-season to go to a more retro look moving forward and will go back to the vintage Timbermen logo used by Nanaimo District

“It looks pretty sharp,” Swanson said. The GM said an impetus for the switch, frankly, was that the team was running low on jerseys – “you lose a few every year,” he said – and had to decide whether to order more or take the opportunity to refresh the team’s look. Swanson also noted that the club will no longer be the Acme Paint-

ing Timbermen. He said there had always been an understanding that the business would help out with title sponsorship on a short-term basis. Acme Painting will stay on as a team sponsor. To contact the club, please visit www.nanaimotimbermen.com/contact.htm. The season starts April 23. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
