PRINCE RUPERT - On March 19, under sunny blue skies, dozens of people involved in the operations of Fairview Terminal gathered to break ground on the expansion. Among those who participated in the afternoon’s event were executives from Maher Terminals, the Prince Rupert Port Authority and CN along with leadership from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, Fraser River Pile and Dredge, BEL Contracting, Mayor Lee Brain and MLA Jennifer Rice. For Maher Terminal executives Mark Schepp and Frans van Riemsdyk, it was a time to not only celebrate but reflect on how far the terminal has come since its inception.

“Here we are in expansion mode seven years later and it is quite extraordinary. You start to take a step back and say that it took a lot of vision and it took a lot of courage, but here we are ... I remember in those early days when we had committed to the project and were trying to solicit some customers to come here, all of those presentations started with a geography lesson about Prince Rupert British Columbia and three or four slides about Prince Rupert. Now, you can go to a lot of headquarters for ocean shippers across the world and there is no geography lesson necessary because seven years later we have put ourselves on the map. We have put ourselves on the map because we are a community in terms of the local community, local government, the railway, First Nations and the ILWU all coming together for the

benefit of establishing this gateway,” said van Riemsdyk, the executive vice-president of corporate development and strategy who was on the asphalt of Fairview back in 2007 to officially open the terminal. “There was always that vision, but it was a matter of patience and timing and due diligence. I think the timing is great right now. We always envisioned it but we never put a timeline on it ... It’s quite an achievement to see it happen, to be part of the first phase and the second phase and to see the growth and the job opportunities. I can’t say enough about being in a small community and being able to see that come true,” said Schepp, who serves as senior vice-president and general manager for Fairview Terminal and was also on hand in 2007. Schepp and van Riemsdyk both pointed to the vision of Don

Krusel, the support of port partners and the work of the men and women at the terminal as driving the growth and expansion of the terminal. “CN has already invested in a siding just outside of the gate that will help us increase the velocity of trains arriving and departing from the facility and the ILWU has been incredibly supportive,” said van Riemsdyk. Also present for the groundbreaking was International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada president Mark Gordienko, who was a worker at Fairview Terminal back in the 1970s. “It is so great to see it come back to what it once was,” he said, also acknowledging the efforts of Krusel and local union members. “I can’t say enough about how this has ended up and how much credit Don deserves for this.

Union opposes emissions plan

test them for one month and report back the results as part of a Canadian Tire nation-wide product testing program. This is the first regional testing of a product under the program and Terrace was cho-

sen to test the Bosch wipers because of its rainy location which is said to be the fourth rainiest community of its type in the country. The program is called Tested for Life in Canada and prod-

ucts which pass the test receive a marketing badge attesting to its acceptance by testers. The Terrace test is one of five to take place in regions across the country within the next year.

KITIMAT - Unifor 2301 has filed a judicial review to the supreme court to challenge Rio Tinto Alcan’s emissions permit which allows them to increase their sulphur dioxide emissions without installing SO2 scrubbers. The union, which represents 950 members in Kitimat, say the increase in SO2 poses a “major public health threat.” From 27 tonnes per day, the RTA emissions will rise to a maximum of 42 tonnes a day, which reflects a larger output of aluminum, the company has said. Unifor 2301 President Rick Belmont said in a union press release that the B.C. government “must take the threat to public health in Kitimat seriously.” The union says the emissions for the new smelter are only limited in relation to daily emissions, while it should be restricted for average emissions in five to 10 minute intervals as health effects from SO2 come from ‘spikes’ of concentration, they say. The union also believe the decision-making process itself was flawed, with a Ministry of Environment employee receiving payments from RTA. A company spokesperson last November said secondment agreements — the name for agreements as in this case — are not out of the ordinary when it comes to assessing and permitting large industrial projects.As for the permit itself and the union’s recent filing, Rio Tinto Alcan spokesperson Kevin Dobbin said they are surprised by the union’s action. “We’re spending $4.8 billion on a new, state-ofthe-art technology smelter that will reduce environmental impacts by over 50 per cent, so we strongly believe the smelter is going to be very good for the environment and the health of our employees,” said Dobbin. He said the company commissioned a third-party study on the effects of SO2 which lasted 18 months and it was reviewed by the ministry of environment.

Left lane rules for the road get clarified By Tom Fletcher

VICTORIA - Drivers must vacate the left lane when a vehicle comes up behind them, unless they are passing another vehicle, avoiding debris on the road, allowing traffic to merge from the right, preparing to turn left or passing an official vehicle stopped on the highway.

That will be the rule any time when the speed limit is 80 km/h or higher and traffic is moving at more than 50 km/h, under changes coming to the Motor Vehicle Act. Hogging the left lane and holding up traffic is already a ticket offence, but one that police found difficult to enforce due to the wording of the legislation, said Trans-

portation Minister Todd Stone. The fine continues to be $109 for unnecessary use of the left lane. Stone said slow drivers in the left lane are a big frustration, prompting drivers to pass on the right, which is also illegal. The changes are not intended to encourage people to exceed the speed limit in the left lane, he said.

Oakes said Ruta will not be offered severance pay, because the government has determined she has been fired for cause. The work environment in the Surrey office of the AGLG had deteriorated, and Ruta’s decision to refuse Trumpy’s involvement led to the decision, she said. Hired to execute an idea proposed by Premier Christy Clark in her 2012 bid for the B.C. Liberal Party leadership, Ruta set herself a target of 18 audits in the first year. Clashes with the

staff at her Surrey office and the audit council began to emerge last year. NDP local government critic Selina Robinson said the twoyear-old office has lost credibility over spending $5.2 million over two years to produce only one audit. Two more reports were issued last week. The function should be included in the existing B.C. Auditor General office, which is an independent office of the legislature, Robinson said. Oakes said she remains committed to the current structure, which had envisioned three audits in the first year and five in the second. It was Ruta who raised expectations far beyond that and then didn’t deliver, she said.

Amendments tabled in the B.C. legislature Monday also aim to clarify the province’s roadside driving prohibition law, after court challenges. That law gives police powers to impound vehicles and suspend driving privileges for up to 90 days after a driver blows a “warn” or “fail” level of blood alcohol on a roadside screening device.

The “immediate roadside prohibition” program took effect in 2010, effectively replacing most impaired driving charges with administrative penalties, including a threeday driving ban and a $200 administrative fee for those who register between 0.05 and 0.08, if the police officer has reason to believe the driver is impaired.

VICTORIA - To make clean energy vehicles more affordable and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the province is renewing incentives of up to $5,000 for the purchase or lease of a new battery electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, and up to $6,000 for a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. When combined with new SCRAP-IT program incentives, total savings could be up to $8,250 for an electric vehicle. The new incentives are part of Phase 2 of the Clean Energy Vehicle (CEV) Program which starts on April 1, 2015, and will distribute $10.6 million from the province’s Innovative Clean Energy Fund over the next three years for various purposes. The energy fund is financed by a tax placed on consumers for home heating fuels and other fuels.

PRINCE RUPERT - The deadline of May 1 for submissions to the 2015 Cedric Literary Awards is fast approaching and organizers of the writing competition are putting out a final call for submissions. The Cedric Literary Awards is a first-of-its-kind literary awards program in Canada, created specifically to recognize and celebrate unpublished English and French-speaking BC writers of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and First Nations storytellers, age 50 or better. “We’ve been receiving a steady stream of submissions since we put out the Call for Submission on Feb. 1, but we’re hoping for more so that we can have a competition that is truly representative of the talent we know is out there of writers with a lifetime of experience to share,” said executive director Veronica Osborn. The Cedric Literary Awards is a juried competition, and a prize of $3,000 will be awarded to each of the category winners, with an additional prize of $3,000 given to a First Nations storyteller. Kitimat speaks up B.C. recharges rebate for electric vehicles on border issue VICTORIA - The B.C. government has revived its emissionfree vehicle subsidy program, offering up to $5,000 to buyers of battery-powered and plug-in hybrid cars. Energy Minister Bill Bennett announced the program at the Vancouver Convention Centre as it set up for the annual auto show this week. B.C. will

spend $10.6 million, most of it for vehicle purchase rebates and the rest to finance new car charging stations. The program takes effect April 1 and is funded to continue until March 2018. Those scrapping a 2000-or-older vehicle can receive an additional $3,250 toward a new battery electric or eligible plug-in hybrid under the BC Scrap-It program. Even with the rebate, an

electric car is more expensive to buy than a comparable gasoline-powered vehicle, but the fuel savings average about $1,600 a year compared to gasoline. B.C.’s last electric vehicle rebate program ran from 2011 to 2014, subsidizing the purchase of 950 electric vehicles and more than 1,000 charging stations. Bennett said electric vehicles and charging stations are

not just a big-city option, and some are used in his home town of Cranbrook and other towns across the province, despite their shorter range. “Anybody with a 200-amp service can put a 30-amp breaker on their panel, put a charging station in their driveway or in their garage and charge their vehicle at home,” Bennett said. That option won’t qualify for any provincial subsidy, other than for the vehicle.

KITIMAT — There are a few more days to submit comment on an application by Rio Tinto Alcan to be allowed to burn wood waste accumulated from the modernization project. April 1 is the cut off for comment on the proposal for controlled open burning of up to 70,000 cubic metres of wood, using four “air curtain” burners.

In the company’s application to the ministry of environment they say the air curtain technology means emissions are limited, including particulates. Basically it cuts down on the amount of smoke the burning makes. Compared to an open fire, the air curtain burners drop carbon monoxide emissions by 99

per cent. For anyone who might be affected, comments and correspondence on this application should be sent to Manager, Environmental Protection, Ministry of Environment, at Bag 5000, 3726 Alfred Avenue, Smithers, B.C., V0J 2N0. The company says in their application that they’ve already accumulated approximately

15,000 cubic metres of waste and up to 55,000 cubic metres are expected in the final stages of the Kitimat Modernization Project. The burning would happen in two phases, one over six to eight weeks for the waste currently sitting in two large piles, and the second phase for 2015 to 2016 waste, burned every three to six weeks.

KITIMAT - Kitimat Council is adding their voice opposing the evening closures of the Stewart-Hyder border crossing. The council was responding to a letter from Stewart resident Angela Danuser, who said the closures would negatively impact the community’s economy, affecting shift workers needing to use the crossing to get to and from work. “We have been assured that emergency services will continue to have access, but what do Hyder residents, tourists or Canadian workers do if they need emergency care at the Stewart Health Centre but do not need to call an ambulance?” Danuser writes. Mario Feldhoff moved in support of the letter at the March 16 council meeting, saying keeping the border open is important. “[It] seems like a false economy that is being realized here by the federal government,” he said. Council’s letter lobbying against the closure will be sent to the Minister of Public Safety Steve Blayney, and forwarded to Stewart’s mayor and council and the Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen, who represents the region at the federal level.

SPRING CAR CARE SHOULD INVOLVE MORE THAN JUST A QUICK SHAMPOO Canada’s long, harsh winters not only add stress to our lives, but also to the systems that keep our vehicles safe and reliable and that means a spring makeover should include more than just cosmetics. While your immediate focus will likely be on restoring your car, van, SUV or truck’s exterior and interior to pristine condition, make sure you also give its mechanical systems a careful once-over to ensure they’re ready to deal with the hot summer weather ahead, particularly if its an older or high mileage vehicle. You can have your service technician do this for you – and many service shops offer spring service special deals - but by following some basic procedures you can spot potential problem areas yourself and then have them dealt with if necessary by a pro. You should have been keeping your vehicle washed regularly to help keep rust at bay, but if you haven’t you need to do so before checking it over as it will be easier to spot damage or problems. A do-it-yourself spring cleaning process also allows you to flush out salt and sand deposits from areas that a quick run through the car wash often misses. Don’t forget the radiator, which may have become partially clogged with debris. A fine spray and a fairly soft brush with long bristles can help here, but don’t be too aggressive and damage the thin

fins. Visually check it for corrosion or leaks. With the engine stopped and cool you can clean the compartment with an engine specific spray cleaner, followed by a rinse (avoiding high pressure spray on electrical parts). This will not only make this area look good but often reveal problems. Hoses should feel firm, not mushy, be free of obvious cracks and show no evidence of leaking at connections. Belts shouldn’t be cracked, frayed, brittle or glazed looking and should be firmly, but not too tightly tensioned. Make sure the engine is completely cool before you check coolant levels. This can usually be done by looking at the reservoir which is marked with maximum and minimum levels. Never remove the radiator cap of a hot engine. If your coolant level is low you can add a 50/50 mixture of anti-freeze and water, but make sure you check it again in a few days and if it is down, or you notice fluid under the vehicle, you probably have a leak that will require attention. Car Care Canada recommends flushing your cooling system and refilling with fresh coolant every two years as the beneficial chemicals in the coolant break down with age. A look around underneath your vehicle don’t actually get under there unless you have the right equipment and knowledge - might reveal a muffler or a hidden part of the body

that has been damaged by road debris. Also look for fluid leaks, particularly from the brakes, and under the engine and transmission. Now, after checking tire pressures, take it for a short test drive. We tend to compensate for developing problems, so adopt an analytical approach when you do this. The brake pedal should feel firm and not move more than a centimeter or two. If travel is excessive, if you have to pump the pedal, or if the car pulls to one side have the vehicle inspected immediately. Simply driving in a straight line while holding the wheel lightly can alert you to alignment problems. There shouldn’t be any sideto-side wander, or pull under braking. If steering response isn’t direct and linear and if body roll and reaction to bumps doesn’t feel controlled, or if you hear any clunks or clonks, components may be worn or have been damaged by winter road conditions. There’s no sense in putting more dry-road kilometers on those winter tires that kept you safe than is necessary, as this can rapidly reduce their effectiveness. And you should never use winter tires all-year round as they won’t provide the same level of traction as summer tires, particularly if they are part worn. Hot weather highway travel can cause their coarser treads and soft compounds to

overheat possibly leading to failure. If you’re re-using last year’s summer tires have the person installing them check them carefully for tread wear, damage and balance. If you’ve kept your summer tires mounted on your “good” alloy rims and are installing them yourself ensure they are inflated to the correct pressure and lug nuts tightened to the correct torque. Check winter tires for damage before storing them, preferably in plastic bags and out of any direct sunshine, so they won’t present you with any surprises next fall. If you didn’t replace your windshield wipers last fall, a hard winter will certainly have seriously reduced their effectiveness. If you replaced wipers with the winter type you’ll want to switch back to the summer variety. If you’re not sure about any of the things you may have discovered on your spring inspection have them checked out by a properly trained service technician. It’s a good time to go and see him or her anyway, for that spring oil change and tuneup, or just for the peace of mind of having a pro check to make sure you didn’t miss anything that will cause problems during the (hopefully) long hot summer. And speaking of that, an annual inspection of your air conditioning system is also recommended, certainly for older vehicles.

TYPES OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES

HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLES (HEVS) Hybrids (HEVs) on the road today can have two complementary drive systems:

a gasoline engine and fuel tank; and an electric motor, battery and controls. Both the engine and the electric motor can turn the transmission at the same time, and the transmission then turns the wheels. HEVs cannot be recharged from the electricity grid – all their energy comes from gasoline and from regenerative braking.

Another type of electric vehicle which is expected to be in the marketplace in the next few years (some companies project 2015) is the fuel cell electric vehicle. Instead of storing and releasing energy like a battery, fuel cell electric vehicles will create electricity from fuel which is usually in the form of hydrogen and oxygen. These cars, although still in development, are considered the “Holy Grail” of electric cars by some experts because

of their efficiencies and the fact that their only emission is water. BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLES Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are powered by electricity supplied by an external source—usually the electric grid— and stored in onboard batteries that drive the vehicle’s wheels through one or more electric motors. Regenerative braking also helps to restore power to the batteries when BEVs are being driven. Although the initial purchase price of BEVs is significantly more than similar gas powered vehicles, even with government incentives, many experts believe that, as with hybrid electric vehicles, increased consumer demand will result in lowered cost in the near future. These vehicles offer consumers extraordinary savings on fuel and on their CO2 emissions.

BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLE (BEV) A battery electric vehicle (BEV) runs entirely on a battery and electric drive train, without the support of a traditional internal combustion engine, and must be plugged into an external source of electricity to recharge its battery. BEVs can also, like all electric vehicles, recharge their batteries through a process known as regenerative braking, which uses the vehicle’s electric motor to assist in slowing the vehicle, and to recover some of the energy normally converted to heat by

the brakes. PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLES (PHEVS) Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) run on a battery and electric drive train that depends on the power grid to charge the battery via plug-ins, but also has the support of an internal combustion engine that may be used to recharge the vehicle’s battery and/or to replace the electric drive train when the battery is low and more power is required. Because Plug-in Hybrids use electricity from the power grid, they often realize more savings in fuel costs for consumers than tradition hybrids. Savings depend on the amount of driving that is done using the electric motor alone.

There are three distinct types of electric vehicles available in Canada today: battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and what are commonly referred to as hybrids. Each offers consumers different advantages and disadvantages, although all deliver fuel cost savings.

PRINCE RUPERT At the conclusion of the 10th Annual Rising Stars program, members of the Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce took time out on Wednesday to recognize those involved and the impact the program is having. Rising Stars matches up students at Northwest Community College with mentors from the Prince Rupert business community, with the two attending Chamber of Commerce luncheons and personal and professional development sessions together. “Every year we see an amazing group of Stars and mentors and this year is no different. The personal growth I

have seen since the first dinner back in the fall to today is amazing,” past chamber president Jason Scherr told members during a March 18 luncheon. “The enthusiasm and energy of the stars was matched only by the commitment of the mentors,” added Keith Lambourne, a member of the organizing committee. The program has come a long way since it first began, with student participants gaining college credit for the first time in Rising Stars history. Also new this year was a Speechcraft workshop hosted by Toastmasters that Lambourne said had a noticeable impact on the participants. “On Thursday the Rising Stars had to present a minimum five minute SWOT [strengths,

weaknesses, opportunities and threats] analysis on their mentor’s business while the mentor was in the room. If I had said six months ago they would need to stand up and give a five minute presentation, there would have been a stampede to the door,” joked Lambourne. “If I asked them to do it today, there would be a stampede to the microphone because their confidence has grown by leaps and bounds.” Aside from Lambourne and Scherr, some of the Rising Stars anonymously submitted statements about the impact the program has had on them. “Rising Stars has been an invaluable experience for me ... I am so appreciative that I was able to take advantage of

this opportunity and encourage future students to do the same,” wrote one. “I had a wonderful experience this year. So many new things I have learned. It was a great, fun experience and a very memorable one as well,” wrote another. The 2014/2015 Rising Stars included Maddy Angus and mentor Kate Toye of Success by Six, Paul Cavin and mentors Derek Baker and Anna Slubowski from Pacific NorthWest LNG, Anna Raselli and mentor Stefan Delloch of Northern Savings Credit Union, Hannah

Komadina and mentor Kirsten Dzavashvili of the Prince Rupert Port Authority, Sheri Latimer and mentor Irene Mills of BG Canada, Brett Parnell and mentor Brittany Segin of Quickload Logistics, Emma Payne and mentor Donovan Dias of CityWest, Naomi Tsuji and mentor Mike Pucci of Maher Terminals Canada, and Jan-Hendrik Visser and mentor Michelle Bryant of Ridley Terminals. April 9th, 1959 – March 17th, 2015 Albert passed away peacefully in Acropolis Manner in Prince Rupert at the age of 55. Albert leaves behind his loving mother Carla Zanella (nee Rech); brother Dan Zanella; sister Diana (Matt) Harty; and his nieces Alyssa and Sofia Harty. Albert was predeceased by his father, Ernesto Zanella, Albert was born in Prince Rupert and worked for the City of Prince Rupert for 18 years. He was a consummate fisher and fished all the lakes, rivers and oceans from New Zealand to home! Albert always had a laugh and smile for everyone he met. He was known and loved in the community for his giving nature and hard work. He was close with his family and will be sorely missed. There will be no public service held. Our special thanks to Dr. Belgard and the nurses, staff and volunteers at Acropolis Manner.

Viola Ruth Lenny nee Rempel April14, 1930 - March 19, 2015

Vi passed away on Thursday night March 19, 2015 at Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace, BC, surrounded by her loving friends. Predeceased by her husband Donald and her brother Vic, Vi is survived by nieces and nephews. After months of discomfort, her health deteriorated quite rapidly. Vi is leaving a big empty space in her large circle of friends in the northwest of BC and the rest of the province. Vi will also be greatly missed by her many cousins in Alberta, BC and the rest of Canada. In keeping with Vi’s wishes, there won’t be a service. Her ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony. At a later date there will be a gathering of family and friends to honour and celebrate the beautiful and much loved person Viola was. Vi very much appreciated the excellent and compassionate care she received from the staff at Mills Memorial Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations in Viola’s memory can be made to the S.P.C.A.

Peewee tourney clears hurdles to success By Cameron Orr

KITIMAT - On Saturday morning as organizers for Kitimat’s Peewee Tier 3 hockey tournament were readying for the tournament that started the next morning and a banquet event that night there was a string of things going wrong. A team from Whitehorse was stuck on the other side of an avalanche and planes bringing three teams from the Lower Mainland weren’t coming in due to airport issues, said organizing committee chair Tony Velho, expressing good humour that’s only available from hindsight knowing how things worked out. The tournament already had to change venues because the labour strike in Kitimat meant no chance to use the ice, moving the event to Terrace. All of those early hurdles just meant anything that would go wrong would at the start, leaving the remainder of the tournament to proceed smoothly. “Sunday morning the tournament started without any issue at all,” he said. “The opening ceremonies went

well and the tournament as a whole was good, really good.” Ultimately it was the Burnaby Winter Club which took the championship banner, winning 10-2 against Tri Port. The Kitimat team put in a solid effort but as the gracious hosts they allowed others in to the finals. Kitimat ended their first game, against South Okanagan with a tie but would follow with close losses against other teams such as Quesnel and Arbutus Club, which comes from an area near the University of B.C. Peewee coach Cam McCulley said playing against teams from so many distant places is always challenging because it’s hard to prepare for how they’ll play. Kitimat’s loss to Quesnel also shows how circumstances change, with McCulley noting that Kitimat, in past events, have beat them on the ice. “You just never know who’s going to show up when they’re 11 and 12 year olds,” he said. He agrees the tournament turned out very well and is thankful to the organizing committee for keeping things running well given all the early challenges.

PRINCE RUPERT - Four of Prince Rupert’s best female players hit the ice with the Northern Select Team for the 18th Annual Ice Classic Female Hockey Tournament in Richmond last weekend, bringing home the gold after going 5-0. The team beat international competition that included Juan de Fuca, North Shore, Richmond and Seattle in the round robin and bested Richmond for the tournament championship. Samantha Wiley was named MVP in the gold medal game and collected seven goals during the tournament, Jordan Carter scored five goals and Payton Colossi netted four goals. The team was backstopped by Prince Rupert’s Elly Lowe in net.

TERRACE - Well, it wasn’t easy, but they did it. The Terrace Midget Rep Kermodes are provincial champions for the second year in a row after defeating Quesnel 3-1 in an epic northern B.C. final March 18 in Dawson Creek. “It was a squealer I’ll tell ya, holy smokes,” said coach Rory Reinbolt, who coaches with his son Sam, and Dave Kawinsky. “They played with two lines rather than three and I thought they would be tired by the second game but I think they had more gas in their tank than we did when it got near to the end. We were up 2-1 and they were hungry and we were trying to hold on. It was fast and furious and frantic at the end there.” It was an uphill battle to get to the championship after a tough loss in game one to Sooke. That meant every game was a mustwin for the Terrace reps, but they rose to the challenge, beating Cranbrook, South Okanagan, and Coquitlam to make it to the final against Quesnel. Terrace opened scoring in the final at 11:12 with a goal by Fred Mowatt and took a 1-0 lead going

into the second. Connor Onstein scored at 17:25, making it 2-0 for Terrace. Quesnel replied at 11:48 in the third with a goal by Riley Kyle.

“It was fast and furious and frantic there at the end...” Rory Reinbolt “Very exciting,” said Reinbolt. “They played very well, either team could have won that one, so I guess it was our turn.” He chalks up part of the success to the 11 vets on the team – the boys who won the provincial championship last year. “They get to do it all over again and I think that really helps as well, helps kind of stabilize things,” he said. A clutch performance by the Terrace goalie, Dion Johnston, didn’t hurt either. “Last game, our goalie was just crazy,” he said. “I think they had four breakaways blueline in and he stoned them.

And the last minute-and-a-half they pulled their goalie and had some quality opportunities as well. He stood on his head. “We had our chances too – the Quesnel goalie played well,” he said. “We were all very happy to see that empty net goal roll in from our zone into the net, everybody knew we’d done it and it was all over, a big long season with our goal finally met. It was pretty exciting.” Not only is the win sweet for the 11 returning players who get to take hold of the banner once again and leave minor hockey on a major high note, but it’s especially vindicating for the players who were on the bronze-winning bantam team last year. For several years Terrace teams have been standing out at provincials, something Reinbolt says could be attributed to more training time because of the second set of ice – Terrace has been able to get past Smithers, a team which in the past was very hard to beat, and other northwest teams for a number of years now. “You never know, you get a batch of kids and you get a batch of coaches, and you get a good minor hockey executive and everyone pulls together as a team they can pull over the top.”
