Rally protests cuts to mail delivery AlistAir tAylor

Brigid Pomeroy hands out protest buttons at Saturday’s rally at Spirit Square.

Don’t cut door-to-door mail delivery. That was the message at a rally held at Spirit Square on Saturday by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). “Stephen Harper and this Conservative government is not listening,” CUPW Pacific Region representative Tim Armstrong told the gathering in downtown Campbell River that brought postal workers and supporters together. “So we have to turn up the volume.” The rally was one in a series being held on the Island to protest cuts to

delivery and other Canada Post services. Armstrong spoke to the gathering followed by federal NDP candidate Rachel Blaney and North Island MLA CLaire Trevena. In 2013, Canada Post announced a five point plan that include “stealing” door-to-door delivery of mail; closing or downsizing public post offices; raising postage rates by over 35 per cent; cutting 8,000 “living wage” jobs; and attacking the pensions and retirement security of postal workers. In instituting this plan, the Conservatives bypassed parliament and elected officials, blind-

sided the union, failed to consult with municipalities and failed to consult with the public. Armstrong said the Conservatives and Canada Post claim that the post office is not profitable and needs to cut services to prevent it from becoming a burden on the taxpayers. Canada Post is actually a “cash cow,” Armstrong said, and the financial straits that the crown corporation is under is a “manufactured crisis.” Canada Post has been profitable for the past 17 of 19 years. Canada Post just announced profits of $194 million. CUPW believes that

cutting services and raising prices is a bad plan, Armstrong said. CUPW has a better plan, he said. The union proposes Canada Post expand services rather than cut them. The corporation has the most extensive retail outlets in the country and could use those to provide services to Canadians. For example, Armstrong said Canada Post could re-establish banking services that it used to provide prior to 1969 and which other countries’ postal services still provide. In the meantime, CUPW is keeping up the fight against cut-

backs to services like door-to-door delivery. That includes pressuring municipal councils to support door-to-door service and circulating a petition which was available at Saturday’s rally to sign. Approximately 500 people signed the petition on Saturday. Blaney, meanwhile, lambasted the prime minister for Canada Post’s plan to cut doorto-door delivery. “It is time for Stephen Harper to put away the axe and restore our home delivery,” Blaney said. Blaney said Harper is changing the country’s institutions against

salt water will damage turf in the foreshore area of the park and undermining of the sea walk will result in the loss of the sea walk in this area.” The city hired engineering firm McElhanney to come up with a long term solution to the problem. Engineers discouraged the city from simply replacing the rip rap, stating in a report that adding more rip rap will not prevent the erosion of the underlying material, which would undermine the protective layer and cause slumping and failure. The report also finds that “adding more rock fill will steepen the face of the foreshore resulting in greater potential for wave and debris overtopping” and “with an increase in frequency and intensity of storms, improperly designed rip rip will need frequent repairs, and will result in more maintenance to the upland portions of the park.” Engineers found that an engineered beach, on the other hand, mimics natural run-up conditions of nearby beaches which dissipates wave energy and intensity, preventing erosion. Milnthorp said there also appears to be a degree of community support for the beach option. In a survey posted online and in city facilities, more than 78 per cent of the 474 responses received favoured an engineered beach, as did the results of meetings with two city commissions and a public meeting in January on what to do with Robert Ostler Park. The city has already used the engineered beach approach to try and mitigate storm damage near Rockland Road and the Island Highway – though a portion of the sea walk is slumping nearby – and at Rotary, Dick Murphy and Ellis Parks. The technique involves reshaping to return the beach to a more natural slope that helps protect the sea walk and the underground services from storm damage. It would also provide better public access to the beach via Robert Ostler Park, the host venue to several community events including Canada Day. It would also increase total park space by 2,660 square metres by providing full access to the waterfront. The cost to create the engineered beach is estimated at $750,000 and will be funded through federal gas tax funds, rather than property taxation. City staff are also looking at undertaking other improvements at Robert Ostler Park in conjunction with the engineered beach project, that include: relocating the storm drainage system under Ostler Park, upgrading the Seagull Walkway adjacent to the park, re-configuring the north entrance to the park and Quadra ferry terminal, replacing the playground, replacing the park irrigation system and resurfacing the park with new sod. Milnthorp said staff will bring a report to council in the coming months with a proposed strategy, design and construction plan that would coordinate all of those projects.

Canadians’ wishes. “We are losing the Canada we once knew,” Blaney said. Provincial NDP MLA CLaire Trevena addressed the rally as well. “What we are seeing is, once again, a government that is doing two things: it is trying to kill a union and it is trying to privatize an essential service,” Trevena said. “It is moving to make Canada Post unsustainable.” Canada Post is making money but the federal government is trying “run it into the ground.” “We need to keep on fighting for our services, our federal services and our services locally,” Trevena said.

NIC chairs voice opposition to tuition clawback J.R. RaRdon Campbell RiveR miRRoR

A dozen North Island College department chairs have responded to the B.C. government’s clawback of free tuition for adult upgrade courses by sharpening their own claws. The North Island College’s Department Chair Working Group has fired back at the decision in a letter to education ministers and MLAs saying the elimination of free upgrading will put vulnerable students at risk and runs counter to the

government’s own Skills for Jobs Blueprint. “ Taking away the tuition for the free upgrade will close the door for students to move into academic and trade openings and put up barriers for them to enter the economy,” said Bill Parkinson, head of North Island College’s Department Chair Working Group. “By taking away free upgrading, it certainly takes away the opportunity for some people to enter the trades.” T h e M i n i s t r y of Advanced Education

announced in December that, beginning Jan. 1, 2015, B.C.’s post-secondary schools would be allowed to charge tuition fees for adults upgrading courses, including ESL language programs. On May 1, the government will no longer provide funding for tuition-free upgrading courses for adults who already hold a high school diploma. Since 2008 adu lt upgrade tuition had been paid through provincial grants, and in 2012 ESL language courses were also tuition-free, with the aid of a federal grant.

The B.C. government will continue to offer a grant to adults seeking upgrade courses, but it will be distributed based on low-income eligibility. “High school is free, but further upgrading is not,” Education Minister Peter Fassbender said when the grant program was announce. “I think it is reasonable to expect adults who’ve already graduated to contribute to these costs.” But the educators are concerned that many adult students — some of whom have been dis-

placed from careers, have suffered a workplace injury or are trying to move into a new career — will slip through the cracks with the added expense and bureaucracy of upgrading. “There is an upgrading grant that students can access, but it’s a low income threshold,” said Caitlin Hartnett, NIC Adult Basic Education chair. “There’s some concern, for sure, whether students will be able to qualify for it. And for some, just an up-front cost can make them wary of the form-filling

they’re going to need to do.” Parkinson noted that filling out of forms will also add an extra burden to the CUPE support staffs at B.C.’s post-secondary institutions. Tuition will remain free for school-aged students and adults working toward the B.C. Dogwood diploma. T h e M i n i s t r y of Advance Education began providing free tuition for upgrading courses through a $6.9 million fund in 2008. But it says that over the past six years, delivery costs have increased and institutions have indicated it is no longer sustainable to deliver the courses tuition-free. Effective today, the government is increasing the total grant funding to $7.6 million. The NIC working group’s letter was sent to Minister of Advanced E du c at i on A n d re w

Wilkinson, as well as to MLAs Don McRae, Scott Fraser and Claire Trevena. It was signed by 12 department chairs. In the letter, the educators said the decision to eliminate the free tuition creates a significant barrier to accessing education; adds to the burden of growing student loan debt; and excludes the most vulnerable citizens from full participation in both educational institutions and the labour market. It adds the Adult Upgrading Grant is insufficient and will quickly be exhausted given the pervasive financial need of students. “We find it contrary to the Liberal government’s talk about the B.C. Skills for Jobs Blueprint,” said Parkinson. “Now we’re sensing they’ve put an additional barrier in place for people in limited circumstances.”

Garbed in pint-sized dry suits, personal flotation devices, helmets and bearing distinctive, fluorescent-green whistles, the first group of youths age 5-8 hit the rapids in the RiverWise Safety Program Monday below the logging bridge across Campbell River. The course, which includes sessions for youths 9-12, for teens and adults, continues through Friday. It is led by Jamie Turko, proprietor of Destiny River Adventures and a longtime Search and Rescue volunteer. The RiverWise program was developed in the early 1990s by Rescue Canada, to increase safety and awareness on the water, particularly in swiftwater environments. This is the second year Turko has offered the program to local youth and adults, with sessions during spring break and in early summer, just after school lets out. “Many people every year lose their lives in moving water,” said Turko, who has twice experienced neardrowning situations himself. “We’re teaching kids how to play safe, to recognize hazard areas, how to save themselves, to assist each other in teams and how to recognize when they’re getting cold. Our View

Door-to-door discussions

Despite some public efforts to stop the change, Campbell River is scheduled to lose its door-to-door mail delivery beginning this September. Campbell River council’s request to meet with representatives from Canada Post at last week’s council meeting was merely an opportunity to get clarification on how the new community mailbox system will be implemented and what the public can expect from the new service. Canada Post has already begun its five-year plan to phase out door-to-door delivery. If some members of the public think the proposed meeting will change anything, then they haven’t been paying attention to what has already gone on in the rest of the country. Communities across We say: Enough Canada have been voicing concerns and objecwill never be tions to the new commuenough for the nity mailbox program, to province’s taxman no avail. In Calgary, one woman has a community mailbox placed on her lawn, just by her kitchen window. She says that no one from Canada Post or the city consulted with her about the location, despite promises from Canada Post to do just that. She merely got a notice in the mail that it was being installed. Campbell River council needs to prevent that kind of situation from happening here. City staff are being consulted on where to place the new community mailboxes, but the locations have not been selected. Staff need to ensure that the locations chosen don’t negatively impact homeowners. Other questions need answers as well. What mail service will be provided for seniors or other people with limited mobility? What happens if the new mailbox is vandalized or robbed? Can mail be picked up at alternate locations? The city can’t stop the change from happening, but it should do everything it can to manage how the change occurs. Last week’s meeting was a good first step. -Black Press

Letters ● Don’t pick the flowers Driving along Pier Street last Friday (March 27) on my way into town, I saw a man stop and pick the daffodils from one of the tubs by the marina. A few minutes later, when I was enjoying a coffee in the coffee shop next door to the Tidemark Theatre, I saw this same man walk past carrying a large bunch of daffodils, red tulips and possibly hyacinths. I see him around town regularly. Clearly, he had walked into town helping himself to the spring flowers on the way. I know it’s nice to give someone flowers and the recipient must have been thrilled to get such a lovely gift but did he/she not wonder where they came from, freshly picked and no doubt leaking sap everywhere? Students find a home in the community When a group of Grade 7 students at École Phoenix Middle School was confronted with the question “What is home?” they did not find the answers in their family rooms or kitchens. They went out to see how the other half lives — and just might have left a mark in the process. Through a language arts program directed by teacher Sarah Vernier, the students tied novel reading with visits into the community to see what the term “home” means to a varied and diverse segment of society that many of us never meet. In addition to classroom visits by a panel of people who described what it’s like to live on the street, the students experienced the Lighthouse Soup Kitchen, Radiant Life Church, the all-weather shelter, Aids Vancouver Island, the Rose Harbour Transition House for at-risk women and the Evergreen Seniors’ Centre. The larger point of all this outreach, of course, goes beyond the links these tweens are forging in the larger community. At the precise age our youth tend to become most peeroriented and insulated in their relationships, these kids are discovering not only the larger world around them, but how they fit into that world. And, dare we say, how their actions can impact it. We don’t expect them to be our new leaders today. They’ve still got a few years to be youths, with all the fun, foibles and stumbles that attend. But, as Vernier says, inquiry-based learning projects like this may just plant the seeds of empathy, of paying it forward and of doing something for their community. Which might just be something they instil in their own children one day. Or, to quote school trustee Daryl Hagen, “It takes a community to raise a child — and it’s a two-way street.”

Be afraid, be very afraid of turf Letters

We are concerned about the possibility of the city putting in artificial turf on the playing fields of Campbell River. Not a good decision. Some cities are even removing the turf that was formerly installed. Given the negatives about the turf, we should all rethink this whole issue. Seattle soccer coach Amy Griffin appeared on NBC news last fall for voicing her concerns about artificial-turf fields. Specifically, the associate head coach of

the University of Washington’s women’s team had been worried about “crumb rubber” — tiny black pieces of used tires — which is being used as infill. She had compiled a list of 38 young players — 34 of them goalkeepers — who had been diagnosed with nonHodgkin lymphoma. Griffin couldn’t help but wonder if those athletes’ exposure to “tire crumb” which contains multiple toxic chemicals and carcinogens, had put them at risk. Since October, her list

Flowers: Leave them there for all residents to enjoy

has grown to 89 names. Although it’s difficult to prove a direct link between exposure to crumb rubber and cancer, Griffin still isn’t convinced that the substance used on synthetic-turf fields is safe, especially for young kids. “We don’t really know enough about the toxins in this stuff,” Griffin says. “You can smell it when it gets hot. Players say things like, ‘We get it [the crumbs] in our eyes’ or ‘Every time I play indoors, I have a hard time breathing.’ If we

don’t know how safe it is, then why can we sprinkle it around on our playing fields?” The ne w generation of artificial-turf fields, including some in Greater Vancouver, contain crumb rubber, which acts as fake soil, supporting the synthetic blades of grass and softening the surface. The crumbs become airborne and get inhaled, ingested, and tracked into cars and homes on clothes and athletic gear. Aside from their potentially negative effect on

the environment, rubber from pulverized tires contains several chemicals that are known or suspected to cause health effects, according to a March 2008 issue of Environmental Health Perspectives. Don’t let this decision about artificial turf go through without going on the internet to view the negative information about this surface. Be afraid-be very afraid! Our children and grandchildren deserve better. George and Patricia Nelson

A hundred thank-yous

Please let me express my heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff and friends of Ironwood Place, assisted living, who completely surprised me with a beautiful party, serving a delicious lunch and birthday cake. Their kindness and caring gives so much pleasure to all. You girls must have had some fun getting me into my party clothes as I was saving them for the Friday party! Also many thanks to my family for the wonderful birthday party held at the Eagles Hall on March 20. The flowers were beautiful, the cards and well wishes were many. I had a wonderful time seeing and visiting with the out-of-town relatives and guests, family friends, grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and more. Thank you to each and every one for taking the time to come, helping to make the event so memorable and special. As well, and yes, another enjoyable party at Carmen and Randy’s home March 21, where many family members gathered, enjoying conversation and a delicious potluck dinner. There is no doubt that this year’s birthday time has been the most wonderful experience I have ever had in my 100 years. Thanks to all. Florence May Knowles

Parks Parcel Tax increase may stick around for the next five years KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

City council began the legal process last week to increase the parks and recreation portion of residents’ property tax bills. Council, at its March 23 meeting, gave first and second reading to a bylaw to raise the Parks Parcel Tax by $12.

The increase, from $25 to $37 annually, was decided on by council during budget planning sessions in February. While council chose to implement the increase for 2015 only, city staff were recommending last week that the increase be extended. “The parcel tax has capital projects planned

through 2019, wrote Dennis Brodie, the city’s finance operations supervisor, in a report to council. “It is thus staff ’s recommendation that the current term of the parcel tax, which is set to expire in 2016, be extended through 2019 to ensure that the parks capital plan can be funded appropriately.

But that caused some concern for Coun. Charlie Cornfield. “Okay, so we’re married to the $12 increase for the other years of our term currently, but could we not amend that? Cornfield asked. Mayor Andy Adams said council wouldn’t necessarily have to be tied to that amount.

“We could amend that any year at financial planning, Adams said. Brodie said the $12 increase will generate approximately $162,000 annually for the city which will go into a savings account for use in the acquisition, development and improvement of the city’s parks and trails.

The funds are also earmarked for projects that council approved in its five-year capital plan, including Robert Ostler Park foreshore restoration, the artificial turf at Robron, a possible Nunns Creek Master Plan in 2016, accessible beach mats, and resurfacing of the tennis courts at Willow Point Park. “It will be necessary to extend the current term of the Parks Parcel Tax through, at minimum, 2019 to ensure adequate

funding exists, Brodie wrote. “Staff are recommending extending the term of the parcel tax through 2019 to ensure the five-year capital plan has adequate funding. Council in the end gave first and second reading to a bylaw amendment which imposes the $12 increase for a five year period. Council could, however, amend the bylaw again next year if during financial planning it wishes to change the Parks Parcel Tax rate.

Earth Hour a bust this year KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

It was the worst showing on record for British Columbians during this year’s Earth Hour, and Campbell River’s efforts went virtually unnoticed. That’s because the amount of energy savings in Campbell River wasn’t recorded and so may never been known. S t e p h e n Wat s o n , spokesperson for BC Hydro, said that unfortunately Hydro was not able to obtain the energy savings data during Earth Hour, which took place between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. last Saturday. “There are two substations that serve the wider Campbell River area, including the Campbell River substation and the

Oyster River substation,” Watson said in an email. “It may not have been recorded for the event or the data may have been inaccurate.” Campbell River Mayor Andy Adams delivered an Earth Hour proclamation for the city and City Hall was encouraging residents to take part in the energy savings event. Other communities across B.C. also took part, but saved just 15 megawatt hours of electricity, the lowest savings in eight years. British Columbians reduced the provincial energy load by turning off unnecessary lights and electronics for one hour, but only by 0.2 per cent – the equivalent of turning off about 680,000 LED light bulbs.

That effort was down 77 per cent compared to 2014’s output when communities across B.C. saved 65 megawatt hours, and down 89 per cent from 2013 when 136 megawatt hours were saved. Whistler led the way this year, achieving the greatest energy savings for the second year in a row, with a 7.2 per cent reduction. Fort Nelson, Courtenay and Comox tied for the smallest energy reduction at 0.1 per cent. Last year, Campbell Riverites reduced their energy consumption by 2.2 per cent and in 2013, by 2.46 per cent. Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when 2.2 million homes and businesses decided to turn off their

lights for one hour to take a stand against climate change. The following year, 35 countries joined in the movement with more than 50 million people participating. Today, Earth Hour is a global event hosted by the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) and is celebrated in 120 countries and 24 times zones around the world. While the efforts of Campbell River as a whole were not recorded, BC Hydro customers can view their individual energy use for Saturday evening, and specifically Earth Hour, by logging onto MyHydro and going to their online account at www.bchydro.com/myhydro to see an hourly breakdown of their electricity use.

Public warned to stay away from river BC Hydro increased the amount of water flowing over Elk Falls this week and the public is advised to stay away from the Campbell River, above the falls, while the high flows are in place. “The weekend storm and the wave of precipitation (Monday) evening is providing a lot of rain and subsequent run-off into the Campbell River system reservoirs,” BC Hydro spokesperson Stephen Watson said on Monday. “Rainfall amounts in the upper watershed hit about 80 mm over the weekend. There may have also been

some modest snowmelt.” On Sunday, the daily average water inflow into the Upper Campbell Reservoir/Buttle Lake was 533 cubic metres per second (m3/s). That flow rate is enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool in five seconds. For the month of March, that was the fourth highest daily inflow amount in about 50 years of record. About 350 m3/s is forecasted for today. BC Hydro’s water supply year goes from October to September. To date for this supply year, the water inflows

into the Campbell River system have been the second wettest on record. Looking ahead, with the near record low snowpack that may be depleted by the end of May, BC Hydro has been keeping the upper reservoirs a bit higher than normal to capture as much water as possible. This is to manage through a potentially dry summer. The Upper Campbell Reservoir increased by about a metre over the weekend, and on Monday was at 219.9 metres; 220.5 metres is considered full. BC Hydro increased the John Hart generat-

ing station output from two-thirds of capacity to about three-quarters of capacity on Friday, and on Sunday, increased it to full capacity. The minimum fish habitat flow down Elk Falls Canyon is four m3/s. Beginning Monday evening, the water release below the John Hart dam will increase to about 40 m3/s, with potential to go up to 80 m3/s this week depending on inflows and to control upstream reservoir elevations. BC Hydro is spilling water through the system. The spill is expected to last into the weekend.

Enchanted: Photo art exhibition comes to life A solo exhibition by local Chiropractor Dr. Janis Guthy is opening at the Tidemark Theatre on April 2 and runs until April 25. A continuation of her phantasmagorical photo art, this year’s show centres around the Enchanted Forest. The backgrounds come from photographs she has taken of the natural temperate rain forests, swamps and waters of Vancouver Island. These forests, however, are far from ordinary. Hunched on a tree stump you will meet the Scribe who rules with wisdom and understanding. Knights of

bold, Ogars, princesses, magical horses, mermaids and mystical fish complete the story. Being a multi-media artist, Dr. Guthy integrates skills of fashion design, sculpture, painting and set design. Meet our Lady of Light. She is a seven foot sculpture and her head and body are totally covered in gems. She wears a threetiered skirt on which 300 crystals hang. Her reflection illuminates a path where you will find the rarest of all treasures. Jour ne y wit h us to where one moves beyond the boundaries

Mereville folk club offers another house concert Gardeners Green Folk Club in Mereville is hosting a house concert with the Tete Trio on Saturday, April 11. Lynn McGown and Michael Pratt have an infectious love of singing that has delighted audiences in Vancouver for 30 years. As Tete a Tete, they

have played at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival four times, and various concerts and folk clubs throughout Canada and the British Isles. Their songs range from traditional to contemporary but always touch the heart, entertain and delight. Pratt is an excellent singer,

concertina player and fiddler who draws from his Irish roots, as well as his involvement in the folk clubs in the British Folk Revival in the late 1960s and 70s, before he moved to Canada. McGown’s musical roots come from growing up in a French Canadian/ English family in Mon-

An evening with the Tete Trio is a musical conversation with stories of humour, the events that shape our lives, and love won and lost, with plenty of opportunity for everyone to lift their voices in chorus. Come and join us at Gardeners Green for an intimate evening of great

Emily Dreger of Carihi, left, duels Camryn Curts of Mark Isfeld Secondary during the final of the Intersport girls soccer tournament at Carihi Thursday.

Carihi claims tourney title J.R. RARDON CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

They had to wait a year for the chance, but the Campbell River Senior girls Tyees got their revenge. One year after watching Mark Isfeld Secondary walk off with the championship of their Intersport Invitational tournament, Carihi brought the trophy home with a 2-0 victory over their Courtenay rivals in the title game last Thursday. It is the team’s eighth championship in the tourney’s 11-year history. “It was a real good tournament,” co-captain Morgan McDonald said. “We hoped to win, of course, but we expected Isfeld to be the team we’d have to beat.” Both goals were credited to Lisa Eberlein, and both came in the final four minutes of play after

the teams played scoreless ball for more than 56 minutes. Neither goal was a highlight reel of offensive execution, but both resulted from the Tyees applying relentless pressure in the Isfeld zone. The first came after Eberlein pushed hard down the left wing, forcing a defender to hurry a pass back to keeper Danielle Robertson. But the ball took a bad hop and the onrushing Robertson slipped trying to change direction as Eberlein raced past to tap it home from six yards. “For me, the biggest thing is to never give up on the ball,” said Eberlein.

Then, in the final minute, Eberlein sent a hard cross into the box and it caromed off an Isfeld defender and into the net for the final score. “This is why we work on that cross,” Carihi head coach John Jepsen told the team in its postgame huddle. “That goal was earned; it wasn’t a fluke. It was unfortunate for them, yes, but it wasn’t luck.” “We’ve been working on crosses a lot,” Eberlein confirmed. “We’re trying to get nice, low crosses.” Kyra Boulding posted three shutouts in net. Timberline Secondary placed fifth in the eightteam, one-day tourney. Carihi entered both a ‘B’

team and its Junior team to fill out the eight-team bracket, but the tournament also included senior teams from Isfeld and G.P. Vanier of Courtenay, from Port Hardy Secondary and from North Island Secondary in Port McNeill. NISS edged Timberline 2-1 in the third-fifth place contest. Vanier blanked Port Hardy 4-0 in the fourth-sixth place final, and Carihi’s Junior squad bested the Carihi B team in the 7th-8th place final. Carihi’s juniors had to go to a tiebreaking shootout twice, edging the ‘B’ team 1-0 in extra kicks after falling 2-1 to Port Hardy in their first shootout.

Campbell River’s Teal Harle was back on the podium last week, claiming the silver medal in freestyle snowboarding in the seventh annual Dumont Cup competition at the Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine. En route to his runner-up finish against an elite international field, Harle bested the reigning Olympic gold medalist and finished just one point behind freestyle legend Bobby Brown. Harle, still in his Grade 12 year, continued a strong season on the slopes with the result. He won two gold medals at the Canada Winter games, a gold medal at the Snow Crown, silver medals at the Aspen Open in Colorado, at the Canadian open in Calgary, and now the Dumont Cup. He also attended the World Cup event in Switzerland. “Going to school at Podium of Life Snow Sports Academy has made all the difference,” said Harle. “I have been able to balance my school with all my training and get it done.” The program, hosted at Whistler, is designed so

goals to go up 5-2. Ryder Plecas potted another goal for the Tyees, but they could get no closer. Wyatt Dumont earned game MVP for his stellar defence. In their semifinal win over Coquitlam, the Tyees got goals from Riecker, Vaton and Estabrook, with Vaton collecting two assists and Jordan Almer adding a helper. Vaton earned game MVP for his threepoint performance. In a must-win game against Seattle’s Blue Admirals, Obuck scored twice and Estabrook and Vaton added goals as the Tyees roared to a 4-0 lead. The hosts got two goals to make things interesting, but Campbell River killed a late penalty to preserve the win for goalie Tanner Ferrill. Reicker, who collected three assists, was named game MVP. The Tyees bounced back from their firstround loss with a strong defensive showing in a tight game against Surrey in pool play. Obuck got the Tyees on the board with assists to Riecker and Vaton. The Eagles tied it up, but Tyees winger Carson Harris set up Ryan Deagle for the game-winner and the MVP award.

Your Adventure Awaits!

As of April 1st you will need a new fishing licence. The tackle shops in Campbell River and Courtenay can get it for you online if you don’t have a computer at home. I also carry a copy of the fishing regulations. If you are fishing a certain area which may be a new river or lake, its good to know about the fish that are available, any closures or bait bans. In weeks to come you will see boats being moved out of storage and the local repair shops will be busy fixing any mechanical problems to get anglers on the water. A number of fishing guides have been gearing up and will be out guiding at various lodges around Campbell River. Doug Condon, who recently spent a number of weeks vacationing in Mexico, said he would tie his hook-ups on the beach during the day so he doesn’t have to do it at home. Doug is a professional fishing guide who will be

These reels were often refereed to as ‘knuckle busters’ and were well used in its time. With the recent rain I noticed that the Oyster River was high and muddy. Bob Gordon mentioned that the one of the runs had changed its course and the river stretch was straight like a bowling lane. With high water over the winter some drifts that anglers were used to may be gone. TIP: To clean a pan size trout or small pink salmon, get a sharp pair of scissors a spoon and it’s a few quick snips and the fish is cleaned. If you are in the river and keeping a pink salmon, I found that placing your fish on the riverbank will attract seagulls and even bears and eagles. On my wader belt I tie a short string with a heavy anchor at the end. After catching a fish put it on the string and

working for a private lodge in northern British Columbia. Locally, many guides will work as contractors for various lodges when the season gears up in May. The bulk of the fishing takes place in June and finishes up in late September. With the abundance of salmon in the area last year, many anglers tried their hand at using some old fashioned methods to have some fun sport fishing. Many brought out the buck tail flies and went to a light rod. The old fashioned

At the Discovery Pier in Campbell River, fishing will start up in late April. Some salmon usually are caught by anglers vacationing here from the mainland and the regulars come out and fish daily. A Tomic spoon has been very popular for catching big fish but many will spend countless hours on the Pier casting out various lures.

STORM OPEN CYCLONE TAYLOR CUP AGAINST WOLFPACK Submitted by Trevor Stevens The Campbell River Storm begin their quest for a provincial championship against a somewhat familiar opponent when the four team Cyclone Taylor Cup tournament gets underway this weekend. The Storm faces the North Vancouver Wolfpack in their opening round-robin contest set for 2:30 Friday afternoon at the Mission Leisure Centre. Campbell River fans will recall the two teams split a pair of exhibition games back in late August at Rod Brind’Amour Arena. The locals won the opener 5-4 and North Vancouver came back with a 1-0 victory the following day. Although both teams have come a long way since that pre-season encounter, Storm head coach Lee Stone says his players have their work cut out for them taking on the Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL) Champions. “North Vancouver has a solid back-end with six veteran defensemen, and probably the best line in Junior ‘B’ hockey in Mitch Crisanti,

Spencer Quon, and Brodyn Nielsen,” he says, “They are all top-end guys.” The dynamic trio has been particularly red-hot recently, combining for an incredible 94 points in just 15 playoff games. Crisanti, who played briefly for the Storm during the 2013-14 campaign, has already tallied 19 times during the post-season. Campbell River hopes to counter with a balanced attack, the same strategy that has been successful for them all year long. “We’re going to play four games in four days so the depth in our line-up is a key factor,” says Stone, “We can roll four lines and six defensemen, and not miss a beat. That’s going to be a huge advantage for us as the tournament moves along.”

a trip to the interior last week to watch the teams live, “Kimberley is a talented team with an outstanding powerplay and a very good goaltender named Tyson Brouwer.” Campbell River wraps up the round-robin Sunday evening at 7:30pm when they take on the host Mission City Outlaws, a team which reminds Stone of a local rival. “Mission is a team that fought and clawed their way through the playoffs – they’re scrappy and hard to play against – very similar to Comox Valley.” The Storm will be missing a couple of valuable forwards this weekend. Dependable veteran Zack Sanderson and

The Storm plays the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) champion Kimberley Dynamiters in their second game, which is set for 3pm Saturday afternoon. “I was particularly impressed with the KIJHL final between Kimberley and Kamloops,” said Stone, who made

high-scoring rookie Tyler Welsh were both injured during the Victoria Cougars series and are not expected to return anytime soon. Taking their places are a pair of former Tyees – 16-year-old Josh Coblenz and 15-year-old Dawson Frank. Perhaps the most difficult decision Stone has to make is who to start in goal. Veteran Jesse Michel and rookie Riley Welyk both saw action during the playoffs and both performed admirably. “It’s created a bit of a goalie controversy, which is always a nice problem to have,” says Storm goaltending coach Andy Seppanen, “They’ve both handled it really well and right now I’d say we have the two best goalies in the league. They are both capable of getting the job done.” If the Storm manages to advance to the gold medal game they will play at 3pm Monday afternoon. The bronze medal game is set for 11am, also on Monday.

Ruth Beatrice (nee Cooper) ~ 1932-2015 ~ Ruth was born January 26, 1932 in Williams Lake, BC, and grew up in Squamish, on the Upper Howe Sound. Ruth met husband, Larry, when she was 13. Eight years her senior, he always said he had to wait around for her to grow up before he could marry her. In June 1950 he did just that and in 1952 he moved Ruth to Campbell River where he was one of the original employees who started the Elk Falls Pulp and Paper Dill. Ruth became very acĆ&#x;ve in her community and in 1956 was one of the founding members of the Women’s Hospital udžiliary. In 1962, she was one of ÄŽve volunteers who took out second mortgages on their homes to build the edžisĆ&#x;ng dhriĹŒ Shop. dhis was a natural progression to her appointment as the ÄŽrst irector of solunteer Services at the Campbell River and istrict 'eneral Hospital, a posiĆ&#x;on she held for 23 years. She also served on the ÄŽrst Hospital FoundaĆ&#x;on Board. Her passing marks the end of an era, as she was the last surviving charter member of the udžiliary. In reĆ&#x;rement, Ruth and Larry conĆ&#x;nued to travel to edžoĆ&#x;c locales and to visit their children and grandchildren, always returning to the town they loved. For 14 years they lived on property in Black Creek so their girls could have their horses near by, but once the nest was empty, they moved back to ocean front in Campbell River. In 2008, aĹŒer 58 years of marriage and a wonderful life together, Ruth lost the love of her life to the ravages of Alzheimer’s. Sadly, not many years later, Ruth found herself on that same path. In 2011, Ruth moved to Kelowna to be closer to family. In 2012, she moved in with daughter Sharon and ÄŽnally into care at Heron 'rove in sernon, BC, where she would live out her days. On March 19th, Ruth succumbed to the disease. She is survived by Sharon ÍžBobÍż 'irard, Karen ÍžBruceÍż Mooring, Lisa Íž eanÍż Brown, and grandchildren dyler, Karly, Carter and Ethan. In lieu of Ňowers, donaĆ&#x;ons to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC or the SPCA would be appreciated. dhere will be no service by request.

Anne Elizabeth Prystupa October 6, 1945 – March 26, 2015 With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of wife, mother and friend, Anne Prystupa. Anne had the loving, caring heart of an angel, but on March 26th, 2015 it was just too tired to carry on. Born in a small farmhouse outside of Tyndall MB, Anne's farm girl life came to an end when she moved to the big city lights of Winnipeg where she met Ted and their adventure out west began. With a stop in Edmonton, Burnaby and Pitt Meadows, a summer visit to Campbell River introduced Ted to salmon fishing and Anne to fish scales and fridge smokers. They were both hooked and immediately relocated to Campbell River in 1976. Anne never regretted her adventurous move to the West Coast and the Island. Known for her famous big crunch dill pickles, Anne smoked, pickled, canned, blanched, and froze local meat, fruits and vegetables all year round. She never turned family, friend, foe or even strangers away. She happily welcomed and fed every guest lucky enough to find themselves sitting at her table. Survived by her husband, Ted, her son Dean (Bridgette), her daughter Kimberly, her son Chad (Sandy) and her two beloved grandsons Alex and Louis, Anne will be painfully missed by all who knew her. We lovingly wish her well on her next adventure. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 3rd, 1:00 pm at Silver King Lodge (2920 Spit Rd, Campbell River BC V9W 5B6) on the Tyee Spit.
