Royston resident Tammy Garrett has dealt with glances and snide remarks in parking lots around the Comox Valley, but the note posted Thursday morning on her windshield was unlike anything she’s ever received. “This is not a ticket, but if it were within my power you would receive two, because of your Bull Headed (sic), inconsiderate, feeble attempt at parking, you have taken enough room for a 20 mule team, two elephants, and a safari of pigmies (sic) from the African interior,” read the typed note. “The reason for giving you this, is so that in the future you may think of someone else, other than yourself. Besides that, I don’t like domineering, egotistical or simple minded drivers, and you probably fit into one or more of these categories. I sign off wishing you early transmission failure. Also, may the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits.” Garrett received the paper following a morning visit to the Courtenay Airpark, and while she is used to remarks when she moves in and out of the ramp of her wheelchair-accessible van, she was not prepared for the anonymous paper on her vehicle. “I’m not taking advantage of

The reason I’m taking two spots is not because I’m being a jerk, it’s because I have no choice. And a lot of times there aren’t that many handicap stalls, so I can’t take one anyway.” Garrett, who has battled cancer for more than 10 years, uses a wheelchair and her rampenabled van to get around the Valley. Her specially-designed ramp, which is on the right side of her car, is generally too big to manoeuvre even in a handicap parking stall, she explained.

Comox Council puts outdoor food court motion on the backburner Erin Haluschak Record Staff

While food cart vendors are encouraged to apply to operate near the Comox Marina, Comox council voted against the idea of establishing a designated food court area in east Marina Park. At Wednesday’s committee of the whole meeting, Coun. Russ Arnott’s motion was defeated 5-1 (Mayor Paul Ives was not present) to use five parking spots during the summer to establish a designated zone for food/craft carts. Citing feedback from the Comox BIA, acting mayor Hugh MacKinnon said there was If we don’t get strong debate, and the organization needed our funding, it’s more time for feedback. a good debate for Arnott argued there already is a bylaw in next season. place to allow food carts Ken Grant on a case-by-case basis, and his suggestion was a temporary one for this summer, to understand what type of business it can generate for a season. “It’s a nice addition to the marina area without taking anything away from anyone,” he explained. Coun. Ken Grant said the issue was becoming far bigger then he had ever imagined. “We’re about to get funding (for Marina revitalization), and if we let people spend the time, effort and energy, and then have to tell them you’re out … it’s a lot of effort for one season if it’s successful. Maybe we should leave well enough alone. If we don’t get our funding, it’s a good debate for next season.” Initially in support of the idea, Coun. Barbara Price agreed with Grant and noted the idea has taken on too much of a life of its own. “I would like to see what come of the grants. I

would be willing to wait.” Arnott explained the concept would see no infrastructure changes, and would require a minimal amount of parking spots.

“I don’t think we’re taking anything away — in fact, I think we’re adding to it. I’ve heard a lot from the community … people want to see something,” said Arnott. “It’s just giving something to the

community that they’ve asked for. This is something so minor … but it is going to tell people Comox is looking at change and is looking forward.”

Notable summer camps ahead for pair of Triple Heat dancers Erin Haluschak

Flesher named poet laureate Arm the meek with a poem, and it won’t take too long. My word is my oath and my sword is a song.

-- Kevin Flesher, Comox Valley’s first Poet Laureate

Jamie Bowman Special to The Record

Record Staff

Cassidy Chalk and Analie Oldale have a head start on their summer plans. While travel is involved for the Comox Valley dancers, holidays aren’t part of the plan. Rather, the Triple Heat Dance Studio pair are using their summer to further their skills with separate camps — at the American Ballet Theatre in New York City and at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. “I’m looking for more training, more experience with different teachers and do some choreography,” explains Chalk,13, who is heading to New York with her mom for five weeks beginning mid-June. She has been dancing for 11 years in a variety of styles including jazz, modern dance and tap, but notes ballet is her passion. Chalk sent a video audition to the school and received an email at the end of January telling her she was accepted to the school. “They only accept a certain amount of international students,” she notes, and adds she would like a career in ballet or contemporary dance. With four years of dance experience including ballet, jazz and musical theatre, Analie Oldale is spending one month of her summer with the world-renowned Royal Winnipeg Ballet following an audition in October in Nanaimo. “I’m looking forward to learning new choreography and to get challenged by new teachers,” explains the 11-year-old dancer. “I’m excited about new styles and seeing how they teach.” Like her peer, Oldale sees dancing as a career, and notes attending Triple Heat is an outlet to explore her passion. “(Dance) makes me feel good. When I come here after school I get to be free. It’s a comfort.” Triple Heat Dance Academy directors are excited for their students’ opportunities. “We want to applaud their accomplishments as in order to achieve such goals these dancers are training 16-20 hours per week along with achieving honour roll grades in their academic studies,” said Michelle Henly, owner and ballet director. photos@comoxvalleyrecord.com

Kevin Flesher is already a lot of things to a lot of people in the Comox Valley. Now he’s also our first poet laureate. Well-known for his sly wit, his Robbie Burns poems, as a favourite teacher, as one of the Dukes of Dodge and as wacky children’s hero Captain Thunderpants, Flesher was introduced Tuesday before the Shane Koyczan show at the Sid Williams Theatre. “I am tremendously honoured and delighted to have been chosen,” said Flesher. “It’s a treat, a thrill and a challenge I am stoked to meet.” The poet laureate search was organized by the Comox Valley Community Arts Council. Thunderous applause followed Flesher’s reading of two of his poems in the packed Sid Williams Theatre, as he opened for Koyczan, currently Canada’s most famous poet. Later, in his performance, Kevin Flesher Koyczan praised Flesher’s work and the community for getting behind the poet laureate project in such a big way. “You guys are great!” Koyczan told the audience. Flesher is excited to get going in his new role. “My mission is to create more opportunities for more people to experience more poetry,” he said. “Old and young, folks all sorts, in all the nooks and crannies of our Valley. I will stir the pot and stoke the fire, bang the tune and strum the lyre. “I will be available to write and perform poems for special occasions, perhaps your next funeral or court case could be tweaked with a fresh limerick. “I look forward to serving the Valley in a new and tasty way. With fresh and zesty verse and rhymes served in a lush bouquet.” Flesher impressed the poet laureate judges with more than the words he has written. “His exuberance about life and his love of the ability of language to express that exuberance,” was what caught the attention of jury member Anne Cumming, chair of the North Island College English Department. “Words don’t just come out of his mouth, but spring from every part of his body. He puts himself out there and connects with his listeners,” she said. “He doesn’t just connect with listeners; he pulls them right in close.” The Arts Council’s ‘big tent’ concept for the Poet Laureate Search invited submissions from songwriters, rappers, and hip-hop MCs as well as traditional page poets. Flesher will have a two-year term as poet laureate.

Centennial T-shirts: Fashion fundraisers Record Staff

Here’s a chance to support the Courtenay Centennial’s fundraising initiative and look stylish at the same time. Courtenay Centennial T-shirts are now available at the Lewis Centre and the Florence Filberg Centre for $20 including tax. The shirts are emblazoned with the official Courtenay Centennial logo and come in black or white (full colour logo) and in a choice of sizes S, M, L and XL. All proceeds from T-shirt sales, as well as other centennial fundraising initiatives happening throughout the year, will be added to the Comox Valley Foundation Centennial Legacy Endowment Fund. Like other endowment funds admin-

istered through the organization, the money that’s donated is invested in perpetuity. Kinetic awarded curling rink contract Scott Stanfield Record Staff

The regional district has awarded a contract worth $1,480,700 to Kinetic Construction to renovate the Comox Valley Curling Club facility, as approved by the CVRD board. Following an Alternate Approval Process last year, the public authorized the district to borrow $1.9 million to renovate the aged building and rink at the exhibition grounds. The CVRD owns the facility and leases the building to the club, which will contribute $100,000 to the project. Renovations are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

You can make an obvious inference if you just took the time rather than do something like this to ruin someone’s day.” In order to configure her van with a ramp, Garrett’s vehicle cost around $55,000. She noted it already draws a lot of attention, and she doesn’t feel as though she should identify anymore than necessary. “I just want people to know, when you’re out and about when you see it … instead of getting mad, maybe just take a second and think, OK, is there a reason maybe they’re parking that way, and check their van if you want to make sure it’s a handicap van before you do something nasty.”

Therapeutic Riding Society bringing Touch a Truck to the Valley Scott Stanfield Record Staff

The Comox Valley Therapeutic Riding Society invites the public to get a bird’s eye view of some big rigs at the inaugural Touch a Truck, May 3 at the Exhibition Grounds. Organizers are hoping for a minimum of 30 trucks. Many will be displayed at the Rotary Bowl, where the RCMP Musical Ride is held. “We’re going to be bringing in a lot of big rigs,” said Angela Walker, who works events and fundraising, and volunteers with the society. “We’re getting all kinds. I’ve asked from mudders right through to crane trucks. We’ve

The rain or shine event runs from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. It will include children’s activities and food booths. The first hour is

horn-free for sensitive ears. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair, blanket and picnic. “That’s the freedom of being on

the grounds,” Walker said. Tickets are $5. Admission is free for children under two. All proceeds benefit the society. “Everything that we make from this goes right back into therapeutic riding,” Walker said. “Right from the ground up, from the cost of the horses, to the building, to the staff, to making sure that there’s programs for those kids to take. “That’s the most important thing,” she added, noting the changes evident in certain students over the past year. “When you see the difference it makes to some of those kids, I can’t imagine them not having their class.”

St. George's United Church offers permanent home for Comox Valley Toy Library Erin Haluschak Record Staff

In a series of baby steps, the Comox Valley Toy Library just completed their biggest leap. The year-old library that provides new toys every week to members without clutter or cost has found a permanent home at St. George's United Church. "We have a central place in the community which is multipurpose; it's not only about people taking and exchanging toys, but moms can hang out with each other and we can host story

times," explained volunteer Vivian Vaillant. In February, the CVTL was scrambling to find a permanent home by the end of March, or else its collection of toys which it lends out for a yearly membership may have had to go into storage. Rev. Ryan Slifka said it's the hope of St. George's to use their building for the good of the community. "Partnering for us is about helping not only other community groups, but also discouraging consumerism and encouraging thrift. It's a spiritual problem of our

society,” he said. Slifka added often downtowns aren't known as family-friendly places, and hopes hosting the CVTL along with the food pantry and Sonshine Lunch Club program will bring an element of providing for the social needs of the larger community. Vaillant explained while the CVTL is excited about the centrality of the new location, the group still faces some challenges: to find funding for liability insurance and to increase the number of volunteers and raise awareness.

"The insurance protects us and our volunteers," she noted. "Last year, our president fronted the funds for the insurance to get it going. That's not a possibility this year. We're hoping someone who perhaps doesn't have children or someone who sees the value of changing the concept of toy ownership may be able to help donate." Vaillant added the entire organization is volunteer-run, and they would like to increase the number of new volunteers to 40. "They run everything from cleaning, logging toys, paperwork

and more. It's a lot of fun, and it's just a couple of hours at a time — grab a girlfriend and that's an automatic coffee date." The CVTL will be closed until April 13 to transition into their new home, but will host a grand opening fundraising party April 12 with a bake sale, silent auction and face painting. They have set up a youcaring.org page to fundraise for their insurance. For more information, visit or to volunteer, visit cvtoylibrary.weebly. com or email cvtoylibrary@gmail. com.

Goodbye Future Shop; hello Best Buy Canadian tech retail giant amalgamating brands Kolby Solinsky Black Press

Named for the future and its robotic hope, one of Canada's largest tech store chains doesn't have one anymore. Future Shop abruptly closed all its stores in the country on Saturday, shutting down 66 locations for good and transitioning the other 65 over to Best Buy. There will be a total of 192 Best Buys in Canada. A total of 1,500 jobs will be lost with the move – 500 full-time, 1,000 part-time. The Courtenay location will re-open on Saturday, April 4 as a Best Buy. Future Shop's website has already been shut down – all traffic re-directed to BestBuy.ca.

"Currently, 80 per cent of our customers are within a 15-minute drive to a store and this won't change," said Best Buy's president, Ron Wilson, in a press statment. "Any decisions that impact our people are never taken lightly; our first priority is to support them through this change. I want to express my appreciation to the employees who are leaving, for their contributions to Best Buy Canada." Future Shop was founded in 1982 in Vancouver by Hassan Khosrowshahi, and its first three stores were opened in B.C. the next year. The company expanded to the United States and the rest of Canada and, by its 10th year, had become the largest tech and electronic store in the country. PREFERRED NUTRITION Maka Energy

Pure Source D-Mannose Power by NOW

Maca is loaded with vital nutrients in bioavailable forms which assist the body in its on-going process of regeneration, ultimately helping to replenish and recuperate from different problems and providing ultimate balance and wellbeing. Its actions focus mainly on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, assisting the body in balancing hormones. This is where the main benefits associated with maca can be seen (e.g. more energy, less stress, better moods, enhanced libido, etc.)

D-Mannose is a simple sugar that occurs naturally in some plants, including cranberries. Although small amounts of D-Mannose are metabolized by the human body, much of it is rapidly excreted in the urine. In the bladder, D-Mannose can adhere to undesirable foreign substances, preventing them from sticking to the lining of the bladder. Because insubstantial amounts of D-Mannose are used by the body, it does not interfere with blood sugar regulation. Supports healthy urinary tract. Washes away undesirable particles.

Supplying aid to both sides

O

n a map, Syria and Iraq are a long way from the Comox Valley.

To those who have family and friends in the Canadian Armed Forces, the conflict there hits much closer to home. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper rose in the House of Commons asking MPs to support a 12-month renewal of an international fight against ISIL, including air strikes over Syria. Canada, it should be noted, has contributed $700 million in humanitarian aid to the war-torn region. Yes, we are committing to more CF-18 sorties, but we are not stopping the help we are providing to children and other civilians caught in the conflict. “There is no either/or here between military action and humanitarian aid,” said the prime minister. “The situation desperately needs both and Canada has been vigorously providing both. We will continue to do both.” Harper has his haters out there, of that there’s no doubt. Many live in this region, as evidenced by letters to the editor and other methods of public expression. There is much to criticize about this government. All governments that have been in power for a time make mistakes. There are deeper issues with the Conservatives than simple mistakes — a puzzling and apparent distrust of science/research and the cuts to services protecting our coast, to name just a couple. However, we scratch our heads when we hear the exaggerated wailing about how Canada has lost its place in the world, lost respect, how we used to be a helper and peacekeeper but now we’re not. We continue to provide hundreds of millions, no, billions to humanitarian aid, food and medical supplies, and education to children who did not choose to be born in war-torn or drought-afflicted areas. Has our role in the world changed? Yes; that was inevitable — the world changed. We can no longer send brave members of our forces into well-defined conflicts wearing baby blue berets. However, like we have always done, we continue to provide aid, and we also see our responsibility, with the use of our Armed Forces, to stop tyranny in its tracks. Make no mistake, what we fight against right now in Syria and Iraq is tyranny. And those tyrants have specifically mentioned Canada and Canadians as targets. With a continued combination of humanitarian aid and armed support, Canada is doing what it has always done. -Black Press

will sign you up. The Community Clean Up is the first initiative in what I envision as an ongoing effort to eventually put an end to the illegal dumping along our back roads. I am not naive enough to think that this will happen overnight. It’s a long process. Fortunately, there are many communities that already do such things, so we have some guidance in that regard. For this year, I’d just like to rally the troops, so to speak. Let’s get as many people, and trucks, out there as possible, and have a day of community service. We will spend four hours picking up what others have left behind. The doubters and defeatists will say we can’t make a difference. But that hasn’t stopped Terence Walker. We can’t let the so-called ‘Debbie Downers’ stop us, either. Walker said it best, last week, before he excused himself from our impromptu conversation to get back to his chore. “My licence plate says ‘Beautiful British Columbia’. It does not say ‘turn it into a garbage pit.’” How’s that for a motivational speech? Terry Farrell is the editor of the Comox Valley Record

VISTA calls out the Liberal government Dear Premier Clark: On behalf of the Vancouver Island School Trustees’ Association I am writing to express our disappointment in your characterizing our valued employees as “low hanging fruit”. Your recent funding announcement identifying total administrative savings of $54 million over the next two years can be summed up as both devastating and detrimental to your government’s BC Education system. This wilful and blatant disregard for our business experts and educational leaders will most certainly be felt throughout the system for years to come. This not only targets our senior and exempt staff who remain under a multi-year wage freeze but also our CUPE employees who have borne significant reductions due to the

ongoing underfunding of education. For over a decade school districts have made extensive financial adjustments that include four-day school weeks, two-week spring breaks, reduced clerical staff support, transportation route and fee for service adjustments, in addition to financial liabilities off-loaded onto school districts by your government. Custodians and grounds keepers have been reduced from 12-month to less than 12-month employees. We have embraced shared services where meaningful cost-saving measures have been realized through fleet vehicle purchasing plans, fuel consortiums and purchasing cards. Boards of Education have assessed expenditures and exercised due diligence to eliminate costs in all areas while doing their best to maintain

classroom learning environments. To believe that the past and future reductions in expenditures do not impact classrooms is unrealistic. Your government’s indiscriminate expectations will ensure the erosion of the BC Education Plan. The professional growth of our teachers, guided by our District’s educational leaders, will be disrupted and will have a direct impact on our student achievement. Innovative ideas and solution are born from collaboration and sharing of knowledge. We ask that you consider the impact that this will have over the longer term. Our children’s education is the key to our future success economically as a province. Sincerely, Eve Flynn, president Vancouver Island School Trustees’ Association

Comox Valley Teachers’ Association applauds the move Dear editor, The Comox District Teachers’ Association would like to publicly thank the SD71 board of trustees for their actions in regards to the BC Liberal government’s persistent underfunding of the public education system in British Columbia. Their recent letter to education Minister Peter Fassbender and finance minister Michael de Jong underscores the fact that students of SD71 have had to endure cuts to services year after year after year. Trustees have had to make difficult decisions regarding budget cuts – decisions that have negatively impacted student success and that have created incredible stress and anxiety for teachers – the people tasked

with educating our youth. Local trustees are also a part of the Vancouver Island School Trustees Association (VISTA). That organization has also penned a letter to Premier Clark (see above). It is wonderful to see trustees starting to speak out so passionately in favour of investing in public education. Teachers have been asking for this for a long time, but especially since Jan. 28, 2002 – the day our collective agreements were stripped of specific language that ensured workable class size and composition ratios for teachers. We know from experience that the Liberal government will not listen to teachers or trustees. They will, how-

Everyone deserves a sufficient income Dear editor, Regarding the editorial Study reveals wage imbalance: Why do you believe it is a good idea to drag everyone down to the lowest common denominator? Everyone, absolutely everyone, deserves an income that is sufficient and reliable. Only public sector workers come close. Why do you want to make everyone poorer?

And please don’t make the facetious argument that the government can’t afford it. The current governments are able to bail out big forestry and mining companies. It is not a matter of money. It’s a matter of priorities. Maybe the priority is the destruction of unions. If so, they’ve done a great P.R. job. Maybe the priority is the privatization of public services by

Chris Lamont is the owner of Comox Valley Curb Appeal — a new business in town. Photo Submitted

Curb appeal adds value Usually gardeners and construction workers are good with their hands and have an eye for details. Most likely too, they want things to be appealing and last a long time. This is what former gardener and construction worker, Chris Lamont, brings to his business. Comox Valley Curb Appeal is a new business that saves homeowners time, and beautifies and increases property values. Lamont, owner and operator, specializes in continuous concrete landscape edging, a specialized technique of contouring garden beds and separating it from grass. In fact, he can make curbing mimic scores of different rock impressions such as slate, travertine, cobble, brick and, new for 2015, Belgium block. He can even make concrete resemble wood. Many of these styles will be featured in his booth at the Home Show next month. Curbing is usually matched with the colour scheme of a house's cultured stone or other accents. With more than 40 base colours and scores of accent colours, and six different curb shapes and styles to choose from, the combinations are endless. "Decorative curbing is to the garden as a picture frame is to a beautiful painting," Lamont said. Most jobs are com-

pleted within a day or crop-circle where the two. Mobile equipment mower's tire falls into is small enough to fit the bed. Just ride the through any gate. Comox Valley Curb Appeal uses local businesses to supply materials, hires local employees, and serves only the residents of the Comox Valley. Jazz fans have chance to dig the music of Tunnel Six Malcolm Holt Special to The Record

After last week’s wild celebration of traditional jazz, with all the fun of New Orleans and its musical history, this week’s concert at the Avalanche Bar presents British-cool jazz of the Pacific Northwest as the great Canadian/American jazz collaborative Tunnel Six plays for the Georgia Strait Jazz Society. Like other performers in recent months, this is the outermost part of their Canadian and American Tour – ranging from Winnipeg to Portland. The great thing is that Courtenay is on the map as a notable jazz venue, and we are able to lure these great musicians. This is the sixth consecutive year the sextet has toured internationally, and we’re proud to be on the circuit. The band comprises Ben Dietschi, saxophones; Chad

McCullough, trumpet; Andrew Oliver, piano; Brian Seligman, guitar; Jesse Dietschi, bass, and Tyson Stubeck on drums. These musicians come from cities as dispersed as Toronto, Chicago, London, Nashville and Portland, and the band is the byproduct of a chance meeting in 2009 at Banff Centre’s International Jazz Workshop. “Tunnel Six tastefully blends elements of jazz, world and folk to transport audiences from the peaks of the Rockies to the shores of the Maritimes,” Dietschi said in a recent interview. “Our music was described in eMusic as ‘a transcendent moment, almost spiritual’.

“Our compositions bring distinctive melodic arrangements, by blending six distinct threads into uniquely impressionistic soundscapes.” The group will also begin recording its third album in Vancouver, British Columbia, during the tour, a yet-to-be-titled project that will dig deeper into group collaboration, album production, and ensemble-based compositions. “It’s always a challenge to record with this group – because we’re together for such an intense and focused amount of time that we want to be sure to capture the music at the right point of growth,” McCullough said, from his home in Chicago. “I can’t wait for this upcoming project as we’ll be adding ele-

ments of post-production studio work over time, to truly make the artistic statement we want. It’ll be an international recording project. Challenging? Yes – but it’ll be worth the extra effort, and I’m sure the result will be (like the band) greater than the sum of its parts.” In addition to this year’s tour and recording, the band has created an online collaborative space at tunnelsix.tumblr.com/ where they are taking advantage of their geographic separation to create new collaborative compositions, while taking in the surroundings of their diverse home cities. The new collaborative compositions will find their way into the repertoire of the group on the tour,

providing a new element to their “collective group sound and style,” as Stubelek called it. “The collaborations through the online [tumblr] site are like an in-depth look at how each musician adds his own concepts,” he said. “You can really see how all of the gears fit together, as the song’s being built.” Tunnel Six has spent more than half a decade defying the traditional concept of a band. They are six diverse artists, with very different mailing addresses – yet, each time they come together they further the common bond of weaving melodies and improvisations on a shared path. This Thursday is your opportunity to listen to their descriptive music. Don’t miss it. Admission is $10 for members and $12 for non-members. For more info go to georgiastraightjazz. com.

We did a little better than that, and the same for minor hockey. Essentially we will have doubled the fundraising capacity, which is what this was all about.” Fans particularly enjoyed the second period intermis-

Vince Sexton passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital on March 21, 2015 after a short battle with cancer. COMING EVENTS

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Shirley Marie Cronan (nee Kurdziel) at the RJH in Victoria. Shirl is survived by her husband Allan of 52 years, numerous friends, cousins, brother Barrie of Delta, niece Lindell and nephews Joseph and Thomas and her pet “Zippy Lou of 15 years. Born in Portage La Prairie, Shirl spent her formative years in Prince Rupert and lived in Fort Norman, Hay River, and Coppermine, in the NWT; Langley City, Spences Bridge, Hazelton, Pitt Meadows (from where she attended SFU); Ottawa and Mississauga, before retiring from a career in Real Estate and moving to the Comox Valley in 1995. Shirl received recognition from the RCMP as an “Unpaid Man for the assistance she provided to her husband at the isolated postings. Shirl’s passions were gardening, the view from the comfort of her water front home, piano, crosswords-suduko, reading, travelling and maintaining close friendships she had developed over the years. A very intelligent thinker whose strength, determination and class created an indelible memory of a very beautiful person with a mind of her own. “Let the world know I am leaving very angry. I did not invite cancer into my body. The treatment of chemo and radiation were pure hell. Please let the Funeral Homes and the News Papers know that no one in their right mind passes away peacefully. The Obits are dressed with pleasantries to place death in a nice comfort zone. No service by request. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice in Shirl’s honour.

Tiffany we can’t believe it will be one year since you left us to carry on without you. We are so lost without seeing your smile and hearing your voice, we miss everything about you. Tiff you are remembered every moment of everyday. Hugs and kisses. Love you forever, Mom, Dad, Tony and Tyler

In memory of our beautiful niece/cousin TIFFANY GAGNON who left us to early on April 1st 2014 Not a day or even an hour passes without you popping into our thoughts. You were a beautiful, athletic, funny, kind considerate, loveable young lady. You had the world at your feet. You really had it all. How this all could have happened we don’t understand. How a year can pass without seeing, hearing or touching you is beyond us. We will always love you and miss you and we hope you are dancing in the sky! Please come visit us in our dreams as we are waiting to see you.

UROC launches mountain bike season on Thursday

The United Riders of Cumberland (UROC) are ringing in the 2015 mountain bike season in style Thursday, April 2 with a fundraising kick-off event at the White Whale Restaurant in Courtenay. The public is welcome to partake in a $20 burger and beer special, with partial proceeds benefitting UROC and the work they do to host races, develop Cumberland’s network of singletrack and advocate

for the sport of mountain biking. “This event isn’t just for mountain bikers,” notes founding UROC member Jeremy Grasby. “It’s really an excuse to have some good times and great food while also supporting one of Vancouver Island’s most comprehensive recreational trail networks.” There will be live music entertaining guests while thirsts are quenched with

Paddlers to hear Shephard speak

Marion Logan

The Comox Valley Paddlers Club welcomes Vancouver Island-based wilderness guide and expedition leader Hayley Shephard as guest speaker to their April 2 meeting. In 2010 Shephard attempted a world-first solo kayak journey around the isolated Sub-Antarctic Island of South Georgia. This challenging journey had a cause – to raise awareness for the magnificent albatross, a bird whose future is uncertain. Despite many challenges, Shephard embodied her resilient spirit as she strove against the odds to fulfil her motto: “Live your dreams.” Shephard was born in New Zealand and became a middleschool teacher. She came to Canada on a three-week vacation which extended to 20 years, where her classroom was moved outdoors. Shephard spends the majority of her time on the ocean, sharing shephard in the company of whales, bears and penguins. She leads expeditions from Antarctica to the Arctic and throughout western Canada. Introducing people to our natural wild environment is her passion. An adventurer, writer and photographer, Shephard’s work has been published in a variety of magazines and her book South Solo: Kayaking to Save the Albatross will be available for purchase at the presentation ($20 incl tax). Her documentary film Soul of the Sea is currently on the film festival circuit. Shephard’s presentation commences at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 2 at the Lion’s Den, 1729 Comox Ave., Comox (behind the Pearl Ellis Art Gallery). Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Comox Valley Paddlers Club winter meetings take place the first Thursday of the month, October through to May. Non-members are welcome to attend.
