The potential rezoning of the 801 Vancouver St. property known as the “bunker” was postponed until April 14 after concerns from a small gallery at a March 24 public hearing prompted town council to seek information regarding noise and odour from the developer. Chaplin West Ventures (CWV) proposes to create a bistro and craft distillery on the foundation, requiring the property to be rezoned in the Official Community Plan from institutional to general commercial and on the town zoning map from comprehensive development to mixeduse commercial. Gwen Brown, a pastor representing the congregation at St. Stephen’s

Presbyterian Church, located across Vancouver Street, brought up concerns about odour and noise, as well as sediment harming the church’s historic stained glass. “We are looking for some assurances,” she said. Town manager Lou Varela said that CWV had addressed lighting issues, but was unwilling to enter into a voluntary covenant regarding noise and odour. At the request of Coun. Kevin Boehmer, town staff contacted CWV principal owner Michael Chaplin by phone to address the concerns during the hearing. It is possible, Chaplin said, to collect and/or scent emissions, and noted, “It’s a tougher sell” to investors with restrictions already in place. SEE DISTILLERY, PAGE 5

Creston town council passed the first two readings of a zoning bylaw amendment that could allow the construction of a gymnastics studio at the east end of Canyon Street. The Vigna family — represented at the meeting by Michael Vigna — owns the properties, and would like to turn the 1704 Canyon St. (former Broaster House restaurant) zoning from food service to mixed-use commercial, including office, fitness studio and child care space, and build a studio for the Creston Valley Gymnastics Club on 1710/1714 Canyon St. In a presentation at the March 24 regular meeting, town planner Jamai Schile said the change in use of the former restaurant wouldn’t impact the building’s footprint, and was consistent with the Official Community Plan. However, she suggested changes to the proposal for the 1710/1714 Canyon St. construction, recommending an eight-foot

setback to match the neighbouring former restaurant and Dairy Queen, as well as increasing “the street appeal by including landscaping that is visually interesting and functional.” With those provisos in place, council passed the first two readings, with a public hearing to come at a later date. According to a letter from the gymnastics club, which has operated for 34 years unable to purchase or build a proper facility, the proposed location will offer better access than its current Helen Street location, as well as offer more classes at one time. “Every year we have to turn away youth who want to enroll in our program due to lack of space,” said president Kori Nathorst. “The facility will allow us the luxury of having two classes running at once, which will be a first for our club, but the norm for most other gymnastics clubs.”

Seniors programs at home in renovated Rotacrest BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Rita Scott, a former VCS board member who served on the adjudication committee for the CBT grant, said that making a case for the project was easy—the other adjudicators “love TAPS.” “It can be quite a pitch,” she said. “Not so with you guys.” The seniors, says TAPS coordinator Bridget Currie, are thrilled with the new venue. When they first arrived at the location with a level entrance — the 22nd Avenue venue had a ramp covered with indooroutdoor carpet — some asked, “Is this for us? Do we really deserve this?” “It’s bright, it’s clean, it’s central in the community and a nice partnership,” said Currie. “They’re just in heaven. … They feel much more a part of life in the community.”

Over 200 people — clients, staff and guests — visited Rotacrest Hall on March 25 to see the renovations and the new home of Better at Home and the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS). The renovations totalling nearly $350,000 included a $150,000 Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) grant to Valley Community Services (VCS), which operates Better at Home and TAPS, to overhaul the downstairs, and over $190,000 for the upstairs from the Regional District of Central Kootenay, which runs the hall through the Creston and District Community Complex. “We need to have someplace for seniors to go,” RDCK Area C director Larry Binks said to assembled guests. “We don’t want them spread all over the community.” TAPS, with over 70 clients, has been operating without permanent provincial government funding since 2005, relying on grants to operate in an aging School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) building on 22nd Avenue South. The day program makes its home in the Rotacrest Hall basement — unrecognizable compared to its pre-renovation form — along with Better at Home. Managed by United Way of the Lower Mainland and funded by the Ministry of Health through VCS, Better at Home started in August, providing non-medical home help to about 90 clients.
The Creston New Horizons Seniors Society also operates during the day, but upstairs, which is now tastefully decorated in the same warm tones as downstairs. “This move to the Rotacrest is part of the sustainability of the TAPS program and was a vision of a seniors centre of services — TAPS and Better at Home all in one central accessible location. … The program has been very important in helping us keep our seniors as independent as possible, and to help them thrive as they grow older,” said VCS executive director Serena Naeve. “It’s important to have one area for seniors to get services,” said Better at Home co-ordinator Ashlene Chadburn. “We are seeing crossover already between TAPS and Better at Home clients.”

“I’ve probably walked into as many as thirty of these, and there was no issue with smell,” said Chaplin. Fans would be whisper-quiet, he said, and the bistro would feature piano or acoustic music.
ONLINE REACTION Readers responded to this story, published on the Advance’s website on March 25: From www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca: “We need to get rid of that eyesore and do something with that spot. Too many stores are closed down. It would also give Creston another place to eat since we have lost another restaurant in town.” Susan Kusnir “If they are worried about the smell — we have the brewery, who produces a great deal more than this would! Besides something needs to be done with the eyesore that has been sitting there for years! Let’s do it!” Wendi Seibold Lengyell “Bring it on. Creston needs this. What an improvement to our downtown. Get rid of that eyesore. Let our town have something unique, something tasteful, something great.” Marilyn Smailes From the Advance’s Facebook page: “I suspect we will continue to see this space as is, slowly deteriorating for many years to come.” Casey Luscher “As though a craft distillery is any worse noise/odour pollution than a giant brewery?” Jared Pachan “This is such an exciting opportunity to reface a site that’s been an eyesore for years. A craft distillery would bring in new business, jobs (in construction and operation), and add to Creston’s unique blend of tourism attractions. Craft breweries and distilleries are a growing and popular market. While I can understand the concern of nearby businesses, it’s unlikely that the smell would be anything compared to what we comes out of the brewery. The hours of business would likely not coincide with those of the church, so I don’t see how that, or noise, would be an issue.” Hannah Fehr “If you care about it get your asses out to the hearing and show your support. There were only 20 people who bothered to come out to the Q and A that the developer put on at the town hall where all your questions could have been answered and your fears put to rest. “If you don’t think you’ll use this facility at least have the decency not to ruin it for the thousands of other people that will enjoy it and possibly make their livelihoods there.” Tamara Movold
“I’ll definitely have something in the lease agreement that will address that,” he said. Brown also brought up concerns about water usage, and whether the town’s waste water treatment plant could handle the outflow. Coun. Joe Snopek, who chaired the public hearing, said he thought the upgraded plant could handle it. Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks, representing the Arrow Creek water board on which he serves, asked whether the distillery’s water usage would be metered. Municipal services director Ross Beddoes said it would be treated similarly “to the brewery or another large user, such as the rec centre,” although details were still being worked out. Resident David Butt was concerned about the floor space the distillery would use — over 16,000 square feet — four times the size of other B.C. craft distilleries. Town staff noted the difference in a report to council; CWV said the additional space is needed to store ingredients on-site. After a brief discussion, council voted to recess the public hearing until April 14, allowing staff to gather more information on odour and noise, with the goal of developing an agreement with CWV.

A certain synchronicity
When Curtis Wullum dropped into my office two weeks ago I had no idea what was on his mind. The purchase of Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort would not have been among my first thousand or so guesses. And upon hearing his news, I immediately felt a big grin spreading across my face. It’s hard to find anything negative to say about Ainsworth Hot Springs. The resort is about as unpretentious as it could possibly be. Nothing about the family-owned business is meant to be showy. It is designed and operated to be a family-friendly, affordable destination where guests can relax and forget about the outside world for a few hours or a few days. And, under the guidance of the Mackies, and the Homens before that, it has been remarkably successful. I have vague childhood memories of the Banff Hot Springs caves and there is no denying the appeal of going into that dark, humid and a bit eerie semicircle at Ainsworth, feeling your way around until the light once again appeared. Even with some lighting — no doubt an acknowledgement that we live in a safety-obsessed society —it’s still a great experience. On our most recent visit last summer I was even lured into dunking into the cold pool by a five year-old who can get her Pop to do just about anything she asks. The appeal of that frigid water so near to the hottest pool is hard to explain. Let’s just say the contrast works. As soon as Wullum outlined the basics of the deal, it felt to me like I was watching the sevens drop into place in a slot machine — it was a winner from every angle I could see. I use the slot machine analogy intentionally. Apparently there have been rumblings by people who treasure seeking out the negative that the purchase is a sure sign that the
resort will soon be the site for a new casino. After all, First Nations and gambling go hand-in-hand, don’t they? In this case, it won’t happen in the short or medium term for two reasons. One, there is, according to
Lorne Eckersley Chief Jason Louie, no license available to construct another casino in the area. Two, he and Wullum agree that the Lower Kootenay Band wants to operate and further develop the site with a much different set of values in mind. Last week, I sat with Louie and Wullum and they spoke of doing some upgrades immediately, then looking at a longer-term plan to put facilities and programs into place that will educate the public and celebrate the long history of First Nations people in the Kootenays. They spoke of signage, of teepees, of fishing boat excursions, of adding traditional Indian food to the restaurant menu and placing a greater emphasis on the 100 Mile Diet. No major changes will take place without the approval of the elders in the small community of Lower Kootenay, which is finally beginning to see some of its economic development plans come to fruition. The future of Ainsworth Hot Springs, in Louie’s eyes, will mirror the future of the Lower Kootenay Band. Slow and steady will win the race. Those words weren’t his, but the sentiment was clear. Every step taken today has to be with the benefit of future generations in mind.
One thing that really resonated with me was the idea that a business that has been lovingly owned and operated by a family for more than a half-century will now be in the hands of a people who used those very hot springs —nupika wu’u, or spirit water —for centuries. One can only imagine how magical those waters must have been to a people who traveled the lakes, rivers, forests and mountains to find food and shelter. Imagine a small pool of hot water steaming on a frigid winter day, inviting cold and weary travellers — or even those suffering from battle injuries — a respite from the elements. Louie acknowledges that there is work to be done for the Lower Kootenay Band to establish trust and build relationships with people on the west arm of Kootenay Lake. Residents of Ainsworth, Kaslo and even Nelson are about to have a much closer look at First Nations people and their values, and it’s an opportunity to learn for both sides. My experience with Lower Kootenay leaders, which started with Chris Luke Sr. and his sons, and now with Jason and Angie Louie and their family and the current council, convinces me that these are good people with big hearts. They want, more than anything, to leave the world better than when they arrived. At a Lower Kootenay community meeting prior to the announcement — one of the largest Louie remembers — he said there were many questions, but little in the way of negativity or pessimism. This purchase looks to me, after taking several days to assess the situation, to have the potential to be a turning point for the Lower Kootenay people. I wish them every success with it. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

Welcoming refugees a privilege To the Editor (Re: “Canada doesn’t need refugees” by Michael Bunn, March 26) Let me first start by saying I am a refugee (and you, as well). Like a majority of Canadians, I am a descendent of the many waves of refugees escaping some form of oppression in the “old world”, whether it be political, cultural, economic or religious. If we retroactively followed your train of thought back to our own refugee ancestors, this country would never have grown into the multicultural mosaic it is today. Ironically, our own ancestors were no doubt a great burden on the First Nations across Canada, tolerant despite the increasing encroachment on their lands, and at times even intermarrying with these newcomers and leaving many Canadians like myself with a uniquely mixed heritage. However, I wonder how different the world would be if the native islanders that encountered Columbus in 1492 had attacked him and his crew instead of welcoming them. What if they had said, “There are not enough lands, food and resources to share so go home”? What if Iroquois Chief Donnacona had left Jacques Cartier’s crew to die of scurvy in the winter of 1535, rather than sharing medicinal knowledge that saved their lives? Perhaps we should ask the First Nations community now how they feel about this? Surely we all should be handed a gun and sent back to where we came from? As an Irish, Scotch, Welsh and English descendent, my working-class forbearers were no doubt persecuted and oppressed too, whether starved out of their homeland during the Irish potato famine or overworked like livestock in the of coal mines, factories

and shipyards of industrial Scotland and Wales. In England, my great-great-greatgreat-Grandfather was mobbed, beaten and eventually died for his conversion to the Mormon faith, leaving his wife and four children in poverty. This brave woman eventually gathered her children and what few possessions they could take to walk across the American plains, while losing one child on the winter journey to Mormon Utah. More recently I have learned that my mother, who was adopted at childhood, is of Jewish descent. Her ancestry points to one of America and Canada’s greatest moral lapses, when xenophobic immigration policies of the 1930s left millions of European Jews no escape from the Nazi gas chambers. I suppose I am one of a lucky few to be able to sit here writing this reply today. You erroneously describe that war as one of protecting our nation from outside threats and thereby justify your own xenophobia and shortsightedness. However, let me quote U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower following his first visit to a recently liberated concentration camp in 1945: “We are told that the American soldier does not know what he was fighting for. Now, at least he will know what he is fighting against.” Thus, lest we forget his words, the Second World War should not justify closing our doors to those who plea for help, but remind us to keep them firmly open. Very few choose to leave their homeland, family and friends willingly. It is a hard and painful decision and the following years in a new land are often lonely and hard. I for one salute our Creston Refugee Committee for continuing the great legacy of offering sanctuary to all our fellow brothers and sisters, no matter where they come from. As descendants of immigrants and refugees, it’s not only a privilege and honour, but also a responsibility to them that we continue to welcome those who now seek our shelter. Amen. Clearing crew leaves behind mess
To the Editor: On March 24, YRB sent a mower to Crusher Road to “open up sight lines”. They sent a mower to do a job that should have been done by a chainsaw and a brush cutter. The damage inflicted on our road is hideous — trees left half splintered, bushes ripped apart. On March 26, two men and a wood chipper were supposedly cleaning up the mess. Large branches and parts of tree trunks are still lying at the side of the road, not chipped. Is this what we are paying taxes for? Ute Bachinski Creston

I guess 500 to 600 people circulated through the market over the morning, picking up local products and chatting, plus the band that was playing had me tapping my toes a couple times. I’m not sure but I think it has something to do with Heather roaming around last month’s market because I had fresh dill on my Sunday night salmon and our bedroom smells like lavender. Teens show no respect To the Editor: At noon on March 10, three teens were seen walking on the pathway behind Extra Foods towards the library, enjoying a beautiful record-setting day in Creston. What was disconcerting was their total lack of respect for their environment as they thoughtlessly and nonchalantly left their garbage along the pathway. One with the red hoodie defiantly chucked an empty Red Bull can a few feet from me. Requesting him to pick it up, he just shrugged, ignored me and hurriedly set a distance between us. Were they defiant, disrespectful teens resulting from poor or no parental upbringing? An educational system that is limited for truly educating? Or just a passive society that chooses to ignore these little peckerheads? Roger LaBerge Creston
Residents enjoying warm weather
Scenes from a small town: Early in March, we happened to be driving north on 20th Avenue just beside the community complex to drop off some stuff for the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market. To round out that beautiful warm sunny afternoon, we saw maybe 14 or 15 teenagers playing beach volleyball in our courts while a halfdozen other young adults practiced down in the skateboard park. Straight ahead of us a block or so away, there was an active street ball hockey game in full swing. So what’s going on here? Why aren’t these kids out causing trouble and running amok? Today’s youth… What do you do? Actually, I thought I overheard the volleyballists bugging us in mid-February to put the nets up — where else (aside from maybe Victoria) would you hear that other than our little corner of paradise? What also never ceases to amaze me, is this time of year between the rains and the sunshine — it’s like you turned on a switch and everything transforms to that brilliant green that wasn’t there yesterday. Speaking of the farmers’ market, we happened to be the host venue for the March 14 and the upcoming April 11

1 p.m. April 11 and pick up some goodies of your own — it’s amazing what is being grown and produced; even this time of year. Another cool place to check out is the dog park down by Millennium Park. On a whim and since it was a sunny day, we grabbed a coffee, drove down to the park and parked our butts on a bench to observe our canine citizens. Talk about relaxing — just watching all the dogs and how they interact (as well as the owners and how they interact) is pretty calming, kind of like watching your bobber when fishing and clearing your mind of the day’s activities. Maybe you have to be a dog person but I was surprised at the amount of activity that place sees; it is definitely fulfilling a community need as you will see everyone from seniors to young moms meeting there on a play date with their babies and dogs. I’m sure you might even have your own favourite relaxation spot around the valley; if not, you should, because there are way more choices around here than many other places. ferry landing from a partying and dumping site into a picnic area that residents and tourists will be able to enjoy along Kootenay River. The CDYF CAC is a steering committee helping guide the direction of the CBT youth funding that was allocated to the Town of Creston a couple of years ago. Its top priority is finding a youth centre for teens to hang out. The teens and their co-ordinator are up to many fundraising and community events that support youth in the valley. Our community’s library is also growing and changing. Throughout the month of March, the children’s area underwent renovations. I spent a Monday morning a couple of weeks ago putting together new furniture and helping arrange the new bookshelves. My daughter and I attended the grand opening on March 21; she thinks the new iPads and magnetic ball wall are a lot of fun. The community networking group is one I have been part of for a number of years through the farmers’ market, and now also attend on behalf of council. It is made up of social agencies and related organizations that meet once a month in a roundtable format to provide updates to each other. I have found this group invaluable for creating community connections and increasing capacity through identifying local partnership and growth opportunities.

Mortgage options for the self-employed
There are essentially two types of self-employed or business-forself (BFS) borrowers — those who can prove their income and those who cannot, and must instead use a stated-income mortgage product.
Getting preapproved While BFS mortgage financing is viewed on a case-by-case basis, if you work with a licensed mortgage professional to obtain a preapproval, you can be confident you have access to mortgage financing and you will know how much you can spend before you head out shopping for a property. It’s important to note, however, that there is a significant difference between being preapproved and prequalified. Agrarian movement bringing new life to farming
Hi, folks! This week’s column focuses on a major grassroots cultural shift, a school of philosophical thought and practice: the new agrarian
agriculture based on sustainable practices. Sustainable agriculture involves methods that do not completely use up or destroy natural resources, and promote long-term health of the land and community. In simplest terms, it is growing an abundance of “good, clean and fair” food. This helps local economies, with the ultimate goal of regional food security. Our Derek Doyle phenomenal Creston Valley Farmers’ Market movement. The new agrarian is a shining example of this prinmovement is composed of ciple in action. farmers, gardeners, food However, even with all the enthusiasts and public organi- agricultural blessings of our zations desiring a return to valley, there is a massive short-
age of local food. More sustainable farms are required. Canada’s farming population is shrinking and getting older; 55 is the average age of farmers in Canada. Less than five per cent of farmers are 34 and younger. Our province has the oldest farmers in country. The good news is this lost generation of farmers are returning. The Young Agrarians (YA) initiative is an example of a program that is working to inspire, support, and network young farmers and encourage the new agrarian movement. YA hosts workshops and events across the country and develops resources to support new entrants into agriculture. Our Kootenay YA representatives are Laura Hannant, 29,
Thought for Food
and Nigel Francis, 31, a couple who live in Erickson on six acres of beautiful hillside. They are certified organic farmers who grow herbs, fruit and vegetables. Laura and Nigel personify the new agrarian movement: strikingly intelligent, caring and passionate food activists. They are taking a slow and deliberate approach to farming. This year they will be providing weekly food boxes to 20 local families by pickup or delivery and larger volumes to select clients. Some farm
gate sales are also available. Laura and Nigel are transitioning to fulltime farming and dream of a farm that provides a viable livelihood for their family and perhaps work for other valley residents. This fine couple is part of a younger demographic flocking to the valley with an intent to farm sustainably. I am grateful for their presence in our valley and the new agrarian shift they are a part of. Derek Doyle is an organic farmer and a director on the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition board.

Briefs from Creston town council’s March 24 regular meeting: •Staff will prepare a report on how the town can liaise with the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce to promote Creston as a place to both retire and raise a family, following a Globe and Mail article that included Creston as one of Canada’s top five places to retire. •Mayor Ron Toyota will write a letter to resident Deborah Munro 1815C to express appreciation for her suggestions regarding the dog park, which included setting aside certain 350C hours for small dogs, as well as creating a second park for small dogs. The town’s budget will not allow a second park to be created, and the existing park was made possible only through a grant opportunity. •Toyota will write to Creston RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan advising him of 2015 municipal policing priorities: increased presence in the downtown core, improved partnerships with the town and community groups, and increased drug enforcement and education. •The town’s Coffee Talk program will be expanded to include separate sessions involving Toyota and no more than two councillors. The first council member Coffee Talk will be held in the Creston Hotel conference room from 6-8 p.m. April 13 with Toyota and Couns. Kevin Boehmer and Karen Unruh attending. •The “business walk” program being organized by the chamber, Community Future and the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training has been rescheduled from April 8 to May 25. •Requests for Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives grants through the town will be discussed at the April 21 committee of the whole meeting. •With no further School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) board of education meetings scheduled in Creston this school year, council will travel to Nelson on June 16 for a meeting with the board. •At Boehmer’s suggestion, the town will send a letter of congratulations and support to the Lower Kootenay Band following its recently announced purchase of Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort.

IHA delegations update Creston town council BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Two Interior Health Authority (IHA) delegations visited town council’s March 24 regular meeting, the first an update by Fernie and Creston acute services director Shirley Mercier and community health services administrator Terri Domin. Mercier said the IHA has a $1.9 billion budget and 19,170 staff to serve 742,000 residents. With an average age of 79 in Creston — a number Coun. Jen Comer took exception to, saying it should be far lower (only 11 per cent of residents are 80 or over, with a median age of about 55, according to Statistics Canada) — she said typical ailments include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetes. Adult males in Creston have the lowest immunization rates,
and an IHA team recently visited Home Hardware Building Centre, the Columbia Brewery and the Creston and District Community Complex, immunizing 60 for tetanus and diphtheria. Adults who are interested in updating their vaccinations should make an appointment with a public health nurse. Mercier and Domin also expressed appreciation for community partners, including the Creston-Kootenay Foundation, the Elks and Shrine clubs, the Tuck Shop and the Creston Valley Hospice Society for donations that help the Creston Valley Hospital upgrade equipment. Following that presentation, community health facilitator Kerri Wall took over, discussing the Healthy Communities Initiative, though which the IHA wants “support and augment local government work in the area

She appreciated local efforts to find out what the population needs in those areas, with research being gathered in Cultivating Creston, the Age Friendly Action Plan and the Youth Engagement Strategy. “There is a long history of cities and public health working well together,” she said, citing water and sewage systems, which are “excellent examples of public policy and public planning.” Wall reminded council she visited last May to discuss smokefree spaces, and has been involved in the region with regard to recreation, agricultural and social planning, and priority population policies. She has also helped with poverty reduction planning in Cranbrook and Nelson; B.C. is the only province without a poverty reduction strategy. She suggested that council consider a motion to partner with the IHA “to promote health and wellness in the community and reduce the risk factors from chronic disease.” Informal agreements have already been struck with Kimberley, Cranbrook, Fernie, Sparwood, Elkford, Nelson, Fruitvale, Kaslo and Grand Forks, with agreements developing in Golden and Castlegar. “Let’s put some intention into our relationship,” she said. Council referred the motion to staff for review.

Blossom Valley Singers giving their regards to Broadway BLOSSOM VALLEY SINGERS
If you’ve not attended a Blossom Valley Singers concert recently, you’re in for a treat — if you can get tickets! With the April 11 and 12 event just a short time away, and tickets in hot demand, our recommendation is that you immediately contact a choir member, or pick some up — there is no guarantee there will be any left at the door.
This spring tea and concert is a salute to the wonderful Broadway musical tunes that have wowed and entertained generations of fans. From the ragtime feel of “Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News” (from The Wiz) to the swing of “Lullaby of Broadway” from the same-name musical, the music will inspire, rejuvenate, energize and uplift you. Songs from Cats, Watch Your Step, Seussical, Hair, Carousel, Fiddler on the

Fire crews rescue semi driver after rollover which happened to be in the area from an accident the previous evening. “Having that large tow truck from Scrap King Towing was the saving grace at the end of the day,” he said. “We used it at first to create a safe stabilization of the truck frame, which would also prevent the truck from pivoting on the trailer connection, and then, when we were nearly out of options to free his lower legs, we used the large boom to lift a portion of the front frame to give us the few inches we needed. “It was a last resort using the tow truck to lift due to the risks to the occupant, but after nearly four hours we were moving into borrowed time, so we found the way to get it done and ensure that during the lifting the vehicle remained stable.” At close to 1:20 a.m. March 27, firefighters finally moved the occupant from the twisted wreckage to the waiting BC Ambulance paramedics, a relief to Moore and the crew. “There is no feeling like it,” he said. “I think when I could see his head and shoulders clear the opening, I turned and began clapping, for him and the crew. I knew he had a family and knew this was going to be the best news possible for them.” Moore was deeply grateful for the operators from Scrap King Towing. “We never want to use tow trucks to lift or pull at vehicles with patients and responders in the vehicle, as there are too many variables that can go wrong,” he said. “We got to a point where a man’s life needed us to take an unconventional risk. We talked to the tow truck operators, explained what we needed, and used some of their experience in vehicle recovery to formulate a plan that was as safe as possible for the occupant and firefighters. We couldn’t have done it without their professional expertise.” The best part of the day, Moore said, was receiving a

Creston Fire Rescue personnel spent four and a half hours late Thursday and early Friday attempting to free a lone occupant in a tractor trailer rollover east of Creston on Highway 3. The westbound tractor-trailer crossed the eastbound lane, rolling completely upside down approximately two kilometers east of the Goat River Bridge, trapping the driver inside the cab. “This was a very challenging type of extrication, and one that fortunately doesn’t happen very often,” said fire Chief Michael Moore. “The driver was in the only livable space within the cab, which was essentially flattened and buried partially into the ground. You could reach your hand in the window of the driver’s side door and touch what would be the floor of the cab. That is very hard to imagine, and even more difficult to believe that the driver was still inside and talking to us.” The fire department received the call at approximately 9 p.m. March 26 for the semi-truck rollover. Moore and Assistant Chief Jared Riel responded with the four firefighters on the rescue unit, and seeing that the rescue was a complex one, requested additional firefighters and apparatus, and closed the highway to provide a safe working area. Firefighters methodically began removing small pieces of the truck, stabilizing the upside-down vehicle to ensure it didn’t move or twist. The front portion of the cab was ripped away from the frame and curled back onto itself, creating “some uncertainty of what parts of the cab were holding the motor and frame up,” said Moore. “With the soft ground where the truck was created difficulty in how we could displace the cab back towards the frame.” As firefighters worked, Moore learned that a large tow truck was in the vehicle lineup,

phone call from the driver to say thank you — he wasn’t sure if he said it at the time of the rescue. “All I could say was, ‘No problem,’ even though I know that it was one of the more challenging rescues I have seen in my career.” Moore said with a smile. “It is dedicated men and women, such as our firefighters, who train relentlessly that make things like this happen when the options become very limited. … It was ten of my firefighters, two great two truck drivers and one determined truck driver that make this a great story to share.” The RCMP will be investigating the cause of the accident.

Crawford Bay principal moving on to Kaslo BY WILL JOHNSON Nelson Star
During his nine-year tenure as a principal and teacher at Crawford Bay Elementary-Secondary School, Dan Rude made it his personal mission to get students outside the school walls and engage with the community as much as possible. Introducing ambitious projects, such as a community mentorship program that pairs students with community members, he helped move learning from the classroom into the larger world. “I really like the idea of looking at students as the learning leaders and having more of a conversation about where each student wants to go,” said Rude, 41, who will soon be moving to J.V. Humphries and Jewett schools in Kaslo and Meadow Creek to take over for Dan Miles, who is heading overseas. “It’s about observing them and seeing where they want to go. What really excites me is those students who are intent on creating their own world. I’ve got one kid who wants to spend a year in Germany. He’s 14 or 15, and he’s just going for it.” Rude said when the youngster started a crowd-sourcing campaign on his own, he was amazed by how behind-the-times he felt.
“I would’ve never thought to do that. These kids have access to technologies and ideas we couldn’t even dream up.” Another example: some of his charges are currently attempting to launch a high-altitude balloon into space, a project that appears nowhere on the curriculum. As a principal he said he tries to “navigate between prescribed learning and exploratory learning.” “That’s something I saw in this TedX talk a few years ago, that we have to try things that might not work. Some go nowhere, some spend millions on research and development and go broke while others spend nothing and end up somewhere phenomenal.” He said he trusts his students’ judgment. “We have some really serious problems to solve and it’s not going to be done by doing what’s always been done. And it’s not going to get done by telling kids what to do. They have strong passions and their world is going to be challenging. We need to listen to them.” Rude is going to take this passion to his new gig, which starts April 15. And though they haven’t yet found his replacement, he’s been participating in the hiring process. He plans to move to Kaslo in the summer.
Isabelle Lastucka December 12, 1918 ~ March 21, 2015
It is with deepest regret the family of Isabelle Lastucka announce her peaceful passing at her home in Swan Valley Lodge on March 21, 2015. Isabelle was born in Romania, on December 12, 1918 to Stefan and Sophia Semeniuk. She immigrated to Canada at age 5 with mother Sophia and older brother Steven where they met up with father Stefan in Neville, Saskatchewan. The family moved to Canyon, BC where Isabelle and Steven finished schooling. Isabelle married William Lastucka on July 8, 1938 at Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Isabelle secured seasonal employment at the Pea Shed and Creston Valley Fruit Growers Packing Shed until retirement. Some of the hobbies Isabelle enjoyed included gardening and looking after the various fruit and vegetables grown on the family farm. Weeds and dandelions were her pet peeve. She also took pleasure in raising a variety of flowers in the garden. Knitting, crocheting and puzzle books became more enjoyable in her later years. Isabelle was predeceased by her husband William Lastucka on May 05, 1993. Left to mourn her passing are sons Gordon Gary (Aleyamma) of Saint Albert, AB and Kenneth Wayne of Calgary, AB; grandchildren David Gordon of Chilliwack, BC and Michael William of Saint Albert, AB; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Avery of Chilliwack, BC. A Funeral Service was held at GF Oliver Funeral Chapel at 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2015 with Father Tom Kakkaniyil officiating. Interment took place at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC. If friends so desire they can make a contribution to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 4 1551 Sutherland Ave. Kelowna, BC V1Y 9M9.
The new job will feature less teaching — Rude currently teaches math, science and outdoor ed — which will give him more time to focus on administration. “Dan [Miles] and I have done a lot of travelling, looking at other schools, and part of what I’m excited about is taking ideas that work somewhere and trying them somewhere else. Dan has started a lot of neat shifts around students as learning leaders and getting the community involved. My goal is to keep it vibrant.” He said he’s looking forward to meeting his new students. “Learning is a partnership. To be able to work in learning is quite amazing. It involves everybody. One of my favourite books is The Big Picture by Dennis Littky. He talks about education being everybody’s business and it really is. It’s students, families, community, staff. In these small places people will care about their schools and it’s an important part of the community.” He said he’s excited to continue to be part of it, calling his leadership style “consultative” and inviting anyone, students or parents, to feel free to engage with him. “It’s a fascinating time. I’m realWill Johnson ly fortunate to be in educational CBESS principal Dan Rude is heading to Kaslo this month. leadership.”

Leonard Werden 1920 ~ 2015
Leonard William Werden was born in Fort Steele on November 6, 1920, and passed away peacefully in Fort Steele at the age of 94 on March 19, 2015. He grew up riding and breaking horses and started working as a summertime pony guide at the young age of 15 at Lake Louise, AB. Leonard left Fort Steele for the coast in 1938 where he soon enlisted in the Army-Engineer division in 1942. He married Lenore Wilson on January 5, 1946, and they raised four sons in Burnaby, where he worked for CPR and Dominion Bridge as a welder and fitter. In 1970 he left the coast and moved to Skookumchuk to build his retirement dream home which he did with no power tools – it was all by hand. Leonard lived between Skookumchuk and Creston, working on the family orchard, for many years. He was always busy and could fix and repair anything the bigger the challenge the better. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years Lenore Mabel Werden; three brothers: George, Bob and Jimmy; and three sisters: Peggy, Viola and Veronica. We thought of you with love today But that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday And days before that too... We think of you in silence And often speak your name, Now all we have is our memories And your picture in a frame... A heart of gold stopped beating, Two smiling eyes closed to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

2015 AJAC EcoRun: Putting consumers first
By Alexandra Straub
The rain is relentless and it’s cold. But the miserable liquid sunshine couldn’t dampen the spirits of the group of nationwide journalists who gathered at the Jack Pool Plaza at the Vancouver Convention Centre to kick off the 2015 Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s (AJAC) annual EcoRun. The EcoRun is an event that shows off a variety of eco-friendly vehicles, which include pure electrics, plug-in and conventional hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells, diesel-fuelled powertrains and highly efficient gasoline options. Its purpose is to help inform consumers of these alternative options, as well as providing accurate road testing fuel economy numbers. There’s no size limit on the vehicle either. Heck, we had a Ford F-150 in the pack, along with the midsize Chevrolet Colorado. The objective was to test a variety of vehicles – regardless of shape

or size – and show that you don’t have to buy an all-electric vehicle to be eco conscious. But speaking of all-electric vehicles, the Nissan LEAF was the first of six vehicles I’d drive over the two-day test drive. This year, we ventured onto Vancouver Island through Horseshoe Bay, Nanaimo, Duncan, and Victoria and back through Tsawwassen. With a full charge on the LEAF’s battery, I wasn’t having any range anxiety. The trip to the ferry, and then to our first stop totalled a little more than 70 kilometres. I started with 143 km on my “tank” and ended up with 63km. As for real world figures, I used up about 80 km of range for a 70.1km trip. more quickly. Our first stop on the Island was at the Cowichan Regional Visitors Centre in Duncan. If you’re looking for things to do in the area, this is the place where you’ll get lots of great ideas. For example, those who love cheese will find that The Creamery at Cheese Pointe Farm has some incredibly delicious offerings. Or those who want some candied salmon look no further than Mad Dog Crabs. And as a tea lover, TeaFarm, which is Canada’s only tea farm and offers multiple blends of flavourful creations. I could have stayed all day but duty called. From there, our journey took us to Western Speedway in Victoria for a dynamic handling course. That part of EcoRun was compliments of the Chevrolet Colorado. The next day’s activities would also keep us

Thursday, April 2, 2015 Creston Valley Advance busy, with a press conference at the BC Legislature, then to Swartz Bay, through Steveston, BC for a fascinating tour of its history, and then finally back home. I’d have the opportunity to test the Ford Focus with the 1.0L engine, the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the EcoDiesel, and to finish up the day in style, I’d have the Acura RLX Sport Hybrid. While the AJAC EcoRun wasn’t about crowning winners and losers – although, we were all vying for the coveted Green Jersey award at the end for most efficient driver – the real winners are the consumers. Not everyone is able to find a place in their home for an electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, but there are gasoline and dieselpowered options that can easily fit into your lifestyle, no matter what kind of driving you do. For a full list of participating vehicles, and to see photos and data, visit www.ajac.ca and click on the EcoRun tab. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Infinitus educates, entertains students CRESTON CONCERT SOCIETY
Classical Katy Perry? Star Wars on Strings? Harry Potter and the Secrets of Chamber Music? It all happened at the Prince Charles Theatre Feb. 23-25, when over 1,200 schoolchildren were entertained, energized and even educated by Infinitus, a critically acclaimed beatboxing trio known for its unique sound and upbeat performance style. The performances were open to students from Yahk to Crawford Bay, from which a teacher stated, “It was well worth the three hours of bus travel for the opportunity to attend.” With a repertoire featuring classical standards and original jazz/hip-hop arrangements and compositions, Infinitus is quickly becoming one of North America’s premiere chamber groups. Formed in 2008 by violist Anthony Cheung, cellist Alex Cheung and violinist John “Adidam” Littlejohn, collectively, the members of Infinitus hold

degrees from the University of Michigan and the Peabody Conservatory and have won awards at the local, national, and international level. Now based in Vancouver, the members are dedicated to quality outreach; Infinitus has performed extensively throughout North America presenting community performances, soloing with orchestras and conducting master classes, workshops and seminars. To date, they have performed over 700 outreach performances in nursing homes, juvenile detention centres, hospitals and schools as fortunate as those in the Creston Valley to share in what was described by one teacher as a “truly amazing experience” and an inspiration to “our budding musicians.” Thanks to a grant from the BC Touring Council’s youth engagement program, applied for by Creston Concert Society, the members of Infinitus, through their spirited performance, were able to constructively introduce students to some of the basics of music. Encouraged to use their listening skills, the audience members were quizzed to identify the animals that were mentioned in a medley of popular songs like “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”; they also were instructed to find the story in music, such as birds, brooks and storms in Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”, used to demonstrate how dynamics (volume) and the stroke of the bow enhances emotion. The members then asked for input at what the students felt during a lively reg-
gae version of Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance”. By using recognizable and beloved pieces for children, the trio was able to present even more complicated ideas, such as themes (in this case Dora the Explorer) and variations, where Dora meets Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings characters in her adventures. These well known tunes were only a small part of the amazingly extensive repertoire of the ensemble, which includes contemporary favourites, such as “Let It Go” from the film Frozen and Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”, both of which got some in the audience to quietly sing along. These “classical” renditions enthralled the audiences. “The musicians were excellent and they completely engaged the students’ attention,” according to one teacher. Students in the audience thought it was “awesome” and “lots of fun” to participate in keeping the energy flowing, when they performed rhythmic pieces that included lots of clapping and some stamping, as well as conducting. The musicians were very receptive to the audience’s numerous enthusiastic questions and song requests. One of the teachers from the Wildflower commented, “One of my students liked it so much that she wanted their autographs.” Infinitus’s final message was to encourage students to feed their minds and spirits positively, with good music; just like healthy food, it will help a
